"AAAAGH!" Gladys screamed, hands pressed against her face, eyes gazing between her fingers. Chell smiled smugly across the table, silent as ever, finger on the timer. She had beaten the challenge before the round limit! But no-one was supposed to be able to do that!

"So, do I see the cube thingy?" Christen asked.

"No!" Gladys snapped. "You're dead! You died in a fire! Chell killed you!"

    "Oh..." Christen whimpered, and withdrew.

This was impossible. She must've cheated... But she hadn't...

    -------------------------------------------------------------

That was the last time Gladys ever saw Chell for years. Chell's family moved away not long after that. Gladys replayed the scenario again and again in her mind, calculating probabilities and replaying scenarios and puzzles, thinking of ways to best her previous creation; to outdo her last design. She reworked, refined, and rebuilt for ages. No-one ever beat all of her puzzles...

Puzzles helped Gladys. They made her feel good; made it easy to forget her Dad's temper, and to deal with her own; made it easier to deal with the divorce. Eventually, Gladys finally managed to forget Chell a little. Since those early days, she'd changed. She'd become quite the singer; gotten better at modelling.

    She had almost forgotten, until...

"Gladys!" Her mother called from the back door, as Gladys silently and carefully worked on painting her latest model. "You'll never guess who's in town!"

Gladys smiled through gritted teeth at Chell, extending a hand to shake before the wild girl pulled her into a hug. Gladys's skin crawled with the revulsion, and she quickly dusted herself down the moment she could get away.

"Chell. How've you been?" She asked with barely concealed hatred. Years of humiliation flooded back. To others, it would have been silly, but not to Gladys. Before her stood the cheerful girl who had shattered her confidence.

"Good..." Gladys nodded, maintaining her delicate politeness.

"I've been doing fine as well." She smiled, hoping to stand confident before her one-time conqueror. "Much the same as I was years ago. I still make models. Still sing. Still devise the best puzzles in the world." The cocky laugh she rewarded herself with turned to ice in her throat as Chell just grinned.

"I've still not forgiven you for last time." Gladys joked. At least, it sounded like she was joking. "But I'm sure we can put that behind us." She smiled so pleasantly, turning and starting to walk. When Chell was out of view, she scowled, and permitted herself to let slip a quiet, vitriolic murmur.

    "You monster..."

She fumed quietly, as Chell informed her of everything that had happened between the intervening years, grinning and nodding as she wished she could turn her hate into a laser singe out Chell's retinas. Then, somehow, the topic turned back to those old games... And Gladys got an idea.

"If you'd like another game, we can play tomorrow. It'll be at my Dad's place, though. I'm sure we can get the old gang back together. As long as you don't mind dealing with my little half-brother..." She suggested. Chell shook her head, smiled, and Gladys felt a surge of delight.

"Excellent! I'll see you then." She agreed, parting ways with Chell, and returning home.

In her room, that night, Gladys chuckled. Years of adjusting, planning, upgrading... Chell would never win this time...

Gladys had spent years waiting for this moment. In some part of her mind, she knew this day had to come eventually. She had spent so much time preparing for it. She even put on her old DMing outfit. It still fit...

"So, um. Uh. Sis. I was just thinking. Pondering. Not doing much. And I was hoping, maybe, you wouldn't mind if I played with you guys tonight?" Wheatley asked, looking up at Gladys as she carefully prepared for the evening's entertainment. Tile sets she'd spent ages making by hand, custom character models she'd sculpted and painted herself... She even had her own dice. She put out the dozens of little turret models she'd carefully pieced together with tweezers, and hummed that little ditty she'd made when she'd first thought of this campaign, for just this occasion.

"No, moron. I've been preparing this for a very long time, and I will not-!" Gladys began, before Wheatley interrupted her.

    "Caaaaave!"

Gladys winced and froze. She heard the heavy footsteps of her father coming downstairs.

"Gladys, are you being mean to Wheatley again?" Her father asked, as he stood in the stairway to the basement.

    "No, Dad." She answered simply.

"She won't let me play!" Wheatley moaned. Cave frowned at Gladys. She didn't even need to look at him to see, her head sinking down as she leaned on the table to support herself.

"Gladys, what've I told you?" Cave asked.

"But-!" She began to interject, to no avail.

"Gladys, that's not how the Johnsons deal with their problems! Has Wheatley ever played with you before?" Her father asked. Wheatley hadn't, of course; she'd never let him.

"No, but-!" She attempted to speak up again in her defense, but to no avail.

"Gladys, you can't just say no to things all the time! When a Johnson encounters something new, they dont' shy away from it!" Cave's voice was always so firm when it came to matters like this. There was no arguing with him. "Where would your great-grandfather, Abraham Johnson, have been," he continued, "if he had shyed away from experimenting with uranium?"

"Probably not dead from cancerous tumours." Gladys said with a roll of her eyes.

"Right, but he'd also never have become a great scientist and figured out how to build a nuclear-powered watch! Thing didn't sell, but, damnit, he invented it! Now let your brother play your game!"

Gladys opened her mouth, but said nothing, simply nodding. Maybe her father was right. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad...

"Can I be a dragon!?" Wheatley asked.

The cracking sound Wheatley heard next was several little turrets breaking under the weight of Gladys's rage.

Gladys couldn't sit, too anxious. She would not start the game without Chell; Chell was all that occupied her thoughts at the moment.

    Almost, anyway.

The other players had already arrived. Rick sat at the end of the table. The first game had ended when he was in mid-puberty, but he was more mature now, and a lot bigger. No longer foaming at the mouth, he was much more interested in high adventure than killing things. She just wished he wouldn't look at her ass so often.

Christen had left the group a while back, but her little brother had taken her place. Apparently ADHD ran in the family, though, and he never stopped talking about space, or his homebrew space setting for the game.

And, of course, there was Thomas. He was like Gladys; intelligent and aloof. He'd gotten over his baking phase, and was now a tall, gawky math geek. Whenever they did fantasy campaigns, his characters were more like accountants than wizards.

And then there was Wheatley. She'd agreed to let him play with the others. She'd given him one of her sphere models to play as, and he'd seemed quite content with that, and had spent the last few hours, nose in the book, trying to learn the rules.

    Gladys chewed her lip.

The doorbell rang, and her heart raced.

    It was showtime.

(If it hurts your suspension of disbelief, Wheatley could have kept his mother's name)

    -------------------------------------------------------------

"You find yourself in a hotel room." Gladys announced to Chell, after she'd gotten the others working on their own little sidequests through the facility.

"An announcement indicates it's time for your exercise routine."

There was a roll of the dice.

"... What do you mean you go back to sleep?" Gladys asked, quirking a brow. Would it really be that easy? Chell would die in her sleep, as the power failed, and her pod would be the first to be deactivated.

"Alright. The power fails while you're in cryo-sleep. As subject 1400, your chamber is the first to have life support cut. You-" Gladys began, only to be stopped by Thomas.

    "No she isn't."

    Gladys paused.

    "What?"

"My scientist character, when we played that aftermath game. He made Chell Subject 1 in the computers, remember?"

"Oh." Gladys blinked. No, it wouldn't be that easy, would it? She sighed. "Right, right."

"Can I go find her?" Wheatley asked.

    "What?" Gladys blinked in surprise.

"Can I go find her? It says in the rules, spheres with a Class II mobility system can move about the facility on the tracks." Wheatley explained, trying to shove the book to her face. Gladys swatted it away. She knew the rules better than anyone.

"Fine. You can search for her. Do a roll and see how many years it takes you to find her." Gladys said with a shrug.

"I... Uh... I got a nine." Wheatley answered her as his dice came to a stop.

"Wheatley, that's a six." Gladys gently explained.

"No, see? Nine." He said, holding it up.

"It's a six-sided dice, Wheatley, it only goes up to six." She replied.

Wheatley smirked, holding the dice up to her face until it was near her nose. "Then how do you explain my six, then, hm? Ms. Science-face? See? Nine!" He asked triumphantly.

"That's a six, stupid, you're holding it upside down!" Gladys snapped, swatting his hand away.

"Oh." Wheatley answered, looking at the dice, as if perplexed. Carefully, he turned it over in his hand. "Oh, oh, OH! Now I see. Yes. Yes, it's a six. Yes."

Gladys buried her face in her palm, and shook her head. This would be a long evening.

"Alright, you're in the main breaker room." Gladys informed Chell and Wheatley.

Wheatley scanned the rules, looking for the solution. They were so close to the escape... "Look for a switch that says escape pod. Okay? Don't touch anything else, not interested in anything else, don't touch anything else, don't even look at anything else, just - well, obviously you have to look at anything else to find the escape pod, but don't touch anything else, don't look at-... Well, you understand."

Chell rolled her dice to search while Wheatley blathered. Far too low, but, then, the odds were stacked against them.

"Hang on," Wheatley smiled, getting an idea, "plug me in and I'll turn on the lights. That'll get us a circumstance bonus."

Chell nodded. GLaDOS made the hacking roll. A natural 1.

"The lights come on..." Gladys almost purred.

"Alright, let there be light!" Wheatley cheered. "Heh... God, I'm quoting there."

"... And you start moving up." Gladys finished, grinning wickedly. "You start flipping the switches as you move up. You begin to activate... The Supercomputer!"

Wheatley paled, but Chell just remained unfazed. Gladys began to frown.

"I hack the computer to stop the power up!" Wheatley blurted out.

"It's too late!" Gladys replied sharply.

"No fair! The rules say I get to make a counter-hacking attempt!" Wheatley whined.

"But you got a natural 1! That means bad stuff happens, so the Supercomputer is activating!" Gladys replied, firmly enforcing her fiat.

    "That's not fair!" Wheatley whined.

"Well, too bad." Gladys shrugged. "The Supercomputer begins to wake up."

"I want to counterhack!" Wheatley repeated, rolling despite the ruling.

"I said no, Wheatley! That's my ruling." Gladys repeated.

"No, no, no, no, no!" Wheatley stamped his hands on the table. Gladys twitched.

"Fine! You try and hack the Supercomputer! You fail! It rips you out of the console and crushes you! You're dead! Game over!" Gladys shouted.

Wheatley's eyes teared up. He sniffled. Knocking over his chair, he ran out of the room and up the stairs, bawling all the way.

Everyone stared at Gladys as an awkward silence descended on the room. She took a deep breath, sighed, and brushed her hair back into place.

"So," she smiled, "shall we begin the tests?"

The game continued as it normally did, everyone doing their thing in their own way. Each player tried to sort out the puzzles Gladys placed out in front of them, in a race to get to the Supercomputer and defeat it so that they could escape. That was how the game went, after all.

"Gladys!" Cave called as he descended the stairs. Gladys gave a heavy sigh. She knew what was coming.

"Gladys, did you kill Wheatley in the game?" Cave asked.

"Yeees, daaad..." She sighed, resting her head in her hand with a groan.

"Gladys..." Cave reproached her gently in a fatherly tone.

"Dad, he broke the rules and argued with me over them." Gladys said simply, able to defend herself more calmly this time; she had grounds to do so, she was right.

"I see..." Cave nodded. "Well, in that case, if he promises to play by the rules, will you let him back in the game?"

Gladys grumbled, about to say no, but the looks from her players were all too sympathetic to say no. If she wanted Chell to keep playing, she had to say yes...

    "Fine..." She relented.

"Wheatley!" Cave called up the stairs. The boy came running down as fast as his legs could carry him.

"Do you promise to play by the rules if they let you back in?" He asked. Wheatley nodded. "Okay then. Go on." Cave nodded, and walked away.

Gladys just stared at Wheatley, chewing on her lip, before giving up and gesturing for him to take his place.

As long as she had Chell doing puzzles, that was what mattered...

As much as she hated to admit it, she was glad Wheatley was back; he was just competent enough to get Chell out of the nice, safe tests and into the line of danger. Pitch-black gangways and industrial cutting tools were ten times as deadly as the weak thermal discouragement beams she'd devised for some of the tests. She even wondered what they were up to as they reshaped tiles and whispered to Chell certain actions to take. They even wrote things down for later without showing her. It was cute that they thought they could win...

"I honestly, truly didn't think you'd fall for that." Gladys chuckled, as Chell fell into what was honestly the silliest trap she had ever thought of.

"In fact, I devised a much more elaborate trap further on for when you got past this easy one."

She then began to deploy the turrets.

"What do you mean, I can't use these?" Gladys asked, as Chell shook her head. She unveiled the first slip of paper they'd written: Replace good turret template with broken turret template. Gladys rolled for malfunctions. Explodes... Well, still no harm...

"Alright, in that case, it's time for an old friend of yours: Deadly neurotoxin." Gladys smiled. The smile vanished, however, when Chell showed the second piece of paper.

"Well, I guess, then, that we're just going to sit here until one of the characters dies of starvation..." She sighed, feeling only mildly frustrated. Chell only had a portal gun, after all...

"Actually," Thomas spoke up, as he returned from the fridge with a new soda, "what's the Supercomputer's core corruption?" He asked.

"Eighty percent, what's that got to do with anything? It's not interfering with operations." Gladys reasoned.

"Yeah, but there's a new core in the room. Wheatley went through the gas chute, remember? That means that he can get the system to replace his core with yours and take control of the facility."

    Gladys's face went white.

    Well... Whiter.

"Don't press that button!" Gladys hissed.

"Press it!" Wheatley barked, imploring Chell to press the resolution button. Gladys threw the trap up. Wheatley rolled to hack. He couldn't beat her, but he slowed her.

    Chell rolled.

"AAAAAAGH!" Gladys shrieked, and slammed her head into the table. No, no, no, this couldn't be happening! Not again! She'd put years of work into this! It wasn't fair!

Wheatley laughed. Chell smiled. Everyone else stared in concern.

"Alright..." Gladys whimpered. "You win. You're the Supercomputer now, Wheatley..." She whined, restraining sobs behind the Aperture Science brand dice roll concealment screen.

"Yes!" Wheatley cheered, jumping up and dancing. "Do you have any idea how good this feels!?" He laughed, grinning eagerly. Then he stopped.

"Wait a second..." He said as a thought came to him. "I'm... The Supercomputer... That doesn't mean the game has to end, right?" He began to grin wickedly; that same wicked grin Gladys got when she was being devious. The family resemblance was uncomfortable.

"What do you mean?" Gladys sniffled, lifting her head up. "You're free. You can leave."

"Well, yeah..." Wheatley said with a smile. "But do you have any idea how long I've wanted to play? I'm the Supercomputer now. We don't have to stop just yet..."

"Wheatley, you couldn't run this game!" Gladys hissed. "You're a moron! If the best minds in the world came together to create a moron, the result would be you!" She snapped.

"A moron!?" Wheatley growled right back. Reaching down, he snapped the head off Gladys's perfectly painted Supercomputer model, and ran to his school science project, a potato battery, and ground the ltitle plastic object into the spud. Gladys shrieked in almost pained agony once more, while Wheatley crudely affixed the little sphere model for his character onto the Supercomputer.

"FINE!" She shouted, rising to her feet. "If you want to be the Supercomputer so badly, you can damn well be it! Moron!"

As she stormed out the basement, Gladys controlled herself to slow, heavy stomps of her feet, until she was up to her room. She closed the door. She let out her held breath.

And then she sank to the ground and began to cry.

Gladys hadn't been the first person in her family to play Portals & Paradigms. She'd gotten a first edition set from her father, that he'd played in his college days. As it turned out, he'd kept all those old maps, and Wheatley knew the rules enough to play it. Cave's old game tiles were all there to play with, along with little written records from the games that Wheatley occasionally read out for effect. The game went on without its original designer.

"Gladys?" Cave asked, knocking at the door. Gladys sat in her room, her neatly arranged room. It was very carefully set in order, nothing out of place. She sat on her bed, pillow clutched to her chest, tears staining her cheeks.

"Gladys, honey, are you okay?" He asked, as he gently entered the room. She didn't answer him, simply sobbing into the pillow.

"Gladys, sweetheart, what's the matter?" He asked, as he approached, and sat down beside her. He placed an arm around her, held her close, and she finally began to speak up.

"Dad, Wheatley... He..." She sobbed, her throat catching. "He... He and Chell won... They beat my designs... And then, he broke my model, and took over!" She whimpered, looking away in shame. "I know it's stupid and all..." She said, wiping her tears. "It's just a game, I should be able to put it in perspective..."

"Gladys..." Cave cooed gently. "You're a very smart girl. It is just a game, at the end of the day..." His words left Gladys nodding in agreement. She supposed that was-

"But, then again, so's the fucking Superbowl!" Cave continued. Gladys's self-pity was interrupted by his words. "If something means a lot to you in life, if it's a game or a hobby or a career or a dream, you pursue it with all you've got, obstacles be damned!"

"When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade, make life take the lemons back!" He declared. "Yeah!" Gladys smiled, a reflection of his enthusiasm on her face.

    "Yeah!"

"Make life rue the day it thought it could give a Johnson lemons! Do you know who I am!? I'm the man who's going to burn life's house down, with lemons!"

Gladys's enthusiasm didn't waver, even as the metaphor began to stretch. By the time he was done, Gladys hugged her father, a rare gesture from her.

"Now, honey, if the game's changed, then you don't stop playing! You show the people who tried to mess with you who they're messing with!" Cave shook Gladys a bit by the shoulders. She smiled up at him, with that same vitality her mother had, before she'd caught him sniffing "moon rocks' and the shower curtain business had failed.

Gladys hugged Cave again, before racing downstairs.

Caroline and Cave were Gladys' parents, Caroline left aparently. Chell's her 'friend' from next door. Not sure who's Gladys' step-mom.

The original thread suggested that Chell and Gladys were step-sisters but I suppose that got jossed.

(I really appreciate all the compliments, I'm glad everyone's enjoying so far. Also, as an answer to the temper thing, Cave's hot-blooded. He has a temper. Case in point: Lemons.)

    -------------------------------------------------------------

Gladys returned to the table, finding Chell in the middle of escaping from the old tile set Cave had played. Even Dad's old designs weren't slowing her down.

Gladys couldn't really contribute to the game much; the rules forbade her from revealing any knowledge she had about the tests, so she plotted. She was forced to sit there, fuming silently and glaring at Wheatley.

    She was planning.

It was a different sensation, being on this side of the table. She found herself plotting ways around the designs, but even she wasn't as fast or as far-sighted as Chell's almost instinctual grasp on how to pass the puzzles. Level by level, she advanced.

A stranger sensation came when she realized that her hatred for Wheatley was also causing her to do something else very different...

    She was rooting for Chell.

Gladys felt nauseous for a moment. At first, at least.

Gladys watched as Chell passed through every level of their father's tiles, until, finally, she was back at the surface. That would be it, Gladys figured. Wheatley would be forced to admit defeat, then, and she could go back to being Supercomputer when he realized he didn't know how to run the game. He had no tiles of his own, after all, and-

"Wheatley, those are my tiles!" Gladys gasped, as she saw him lay down the new pieces.

"No they're not. These came with the game." Wheatley said simply.

"Those did, but not those!" Gladys pointed at the tiles she had carefully made by hand.

"Hey, though, it's not the same test, though, now, is it?" Wheatley shrugged his shoulders. "See? This tile here, that's new." He said, pointing at the different door tile.

Gladys shuddered, closing her eyes as she swallowed her rage. She jumped a little as a hand patted her on the shoulder. She squirmed away from Chell, who just smiled, shrugged, and proceeded to solve Wheatley's ham-fistedly built creations.

Gladys just continued to look at Chell funny for a moment, before going back to trying to figure out a way to beat Wheatley.

"Well, I'm dead." Rick declared, replacing his test subject piece with a personality core. The rules dictated, players who failed to reach the Supercomputer became NPCs. Already, Mark, Christen's little brother, and Thomas had lost their pieces, and were distracted with other things.

Gladys looked at the cores. Suddenly, an epiphany struck. Brilliant. Really, she was brilliant...

Gladys sat beside Chell, staring intently at the tiles. Watching Wheatley butcher her creations was maddening; like having her fingernails pulled out, one by one. He had even attempted to construct some pathetic little houserule creations of his own, by mashing together the turrets she had snapped earlier with one of the cubes. It was insanity!

"Oh, come on! You should be having a harder time than this!" Wheatley griped, as he watched Chell almost fly through each puzzle. "You can't be serious, honestly!"

"To be perfectly honest, testing puzzles is a bit euphoric." Gladys admitted quietly to Chell. "When people beat them over and over, though, it starts to wear off pretty quickly. If people can't solve them, there's no rush. If they do it too quickly, it gets... Frustrating." She explained. "It never bothered me, I was in it for the fun of the game, but for those without the intellect to push past it..." She murmured, glaring at Wheatley.

Chell smiled knowingly at Gladys, which just made her frown and watch and wait. It wouldn't be long now. Wheatley was already starting to run out of tiles; he was resorting to the back areas already, after all.

For Gladys, the end couldn't come too soon anyway. The way Chell smiled whenever Gladys said something to her made the pale girl feel a little strange...

(Sheesh, is it past midnight already? Good thing we're nearing the end...)

"Guys, it's getting late. My Mom's gonna have to pick me up soon." Mark said, speaking up as he doodled a drawing of his character in space, making a witty joke about space, and somehow shouting it out to an audience, which appeared to be space.

"Right. We're on a timer, it seems..." Gladys mumbled to herself. "We better get this done before this facility gets taken apart." She was able to get out a laugh, before she winced, as Wheatley crudely tried to ram the pieces of her tiles together, crumpling and bending them to create "new" puzzles. Inside, Gladys was screaming a little. She hated Wheatley more than anyone right now, and...

    And that included Chell.

They were getting close to the end, very close. They were right outside the Supercomputer chamber. It wouldn't be long now...

"Look," Gladys whispered to Chell, "I know you probably don't want to put me back. You're probably thinking I'll betray you, and on any other day, you'd be right, but... Well... For once, I don't hear this little voice telling me to kill you."

She blushed and laughed a little, genuinely laughed, as she made the statement. "I'm sorry, that must've sounded really crazy, huh? Seems like there's really something wrong with me." Chell just smirked and nodded.

With that, Chell moved her piece into the final chamber.

It was time to end this.

Gladys was glad she'd decided to keep the defective core tile attached to the Supercomputer chamber. The plan would work. Chell played her part. If it was anyone else, Wheatley's astonishingly uncharacteristic streak of intelligence would have killed them, but Chell's bizarre combination of intellect and dumb luck left her succeeding where others would have failed.

Well, that and Wheatley had chosen to import the old tile set, and was forced to put in at least one goo tile. Apparently he used up all his intellect on the other tricks, which was why he put in the white goo. It didn't take long for him to fall right into their trap.

"Space. Space. Going to go to space." Mark muttered over and over, smiling eagerly, knowing that Gladys had promised, after much bugging, that their next game would take place in the space setting.

"Okay! We get it! You! Space! Sheeeesh!" Rick groaned, getting rather annoyed after hours of this thinking out loud.

"Hey!" Thomas called out as he browsed the internet on his smart phone. "Apparently William Shakespeare didn't exist. His plays were written in 1589 by Francis Bacon, who used a ouija board to enslave play-writing ghosts."

"Where are you getting these facts?" Rick asked, still rather tense from Mark's rambling.

    "Wikipedia." Thomas replied simply.

"Hey, guys, my Mom's gonna be here any minute." Mark spoke up. "We gotta finish this fast."

    "Fine." Wheatley agreed. "How long?"

"I dunno." He shrugged. "Five minutes?"

"I'll time it." Thomas called out, setting up the timer.

"What? Hey, come on-" Wheatley was about to interject.

"Stop wasting time! Just play it!" Gladys shook her head, and they all focused. As Chell attached the last of the cores, Gladys smiled and held up the sheet of paper she'd been using to pass plans back and forth to Wheatley.

    Core corruption, 100%.

Gladys was not expecting Wheatley to pull one smart move. She could never have expected a second. She held her breath, as damage was rolled, Chell realing from the explosion as she was hurled from the button room.

"What!?" Wheatley gaped. "Are you still alive!?" It was impossible, but, by luck alone, Chell had survived a dozen point blank explosions. Whatever blessings were upon her, they were very strong at that moment. The time limit was approaching. The facility was falling apart from the battle. It seemed like it would be a draw, and...

"What do you mean, you shoot a portal to the Moon!?" Wheatley asked, looking at Chell in disbelief. Gladys was in as much shock as Wheatley but... Well, it was valid; anything coated in moon rocks was valid, so why not the Moon itself? It was brilliant!

"Wait, so we're in space!?" Mark gasped.

"Yeah, idiot here is going to get us all pulled into space!"

"I detatch and go off into space!" Mark giggled with glee.

"Great, well, now we're all going to die and I have no idea how to fix this!" Wheatley huffed, crossing his arms.

    Dice clattered on the table.

    Natural 20.

"I've already fixed it." Gladys said coldly. "And you are not going to survive."

With a gesture, she removed Wheatley's core from the Supercomputer model, tossing it aside, and applied polymer cement to it, placing her cleaned module back onto it.

"Wait... Does Chell survive?" Rick asked.

Gladys felt her throat catch. She hadn't thought of that... She looked to Chell, worried. A roll. Relief surged through her as she saw Chell had indeed survived...

"Good... You're unconscious, but alive..." Gladys smiled. Everyone cheered for a moment. Then Gladys's smiled turned into a wicked grin.

    "And at my mercy..."

"You want to know why I let you live." Gladys said, reading Chell's face like a book, as everyone else packed their things up and left. They were alone, together, in the basement.

"Well, to be honest, I learned a valuable lesson. For years, now, I resented you, for being able to defeat me so easily. It became an obsession." She explained, looking a little ashamed from her admission. "If you hadn't, though, I'd never have improved. The game was more fun when I devised better methods. You didn't make it less fun for me, you made it more fun. You weren't my enemy, you were my friend, all along." Gladys smiled rather sweetly at her friend as the two packed the game away.

Chell was the last to leave that night. Wheatley was up in his room, moping. He wasn't crying, but he certainly wasn't happy. Gladys showed Chell to the door, and stood outside with her in the cool night air, waiting for Chell's mother to come and pick her up.

"You know, I learned something else from this experience, and watching you play." Gladys said with a smile. "The simplest solutions are often the easiest ones. Beating you is hard." The smile grew quickly cooler.

"That's why I don't think I'll be running another game of Portals & Paradigms." Gladys shrugged. "I've got other things to do. So we don't really have a reason to speak to each other anymore. Not that you ever did speak much." She chuckled darkly.

"Your Mom's car is here." Gladys said, as light flashed over them. "Just go."

With that, Gladys turned on her heel, walked away, and began to hum softly to herself. It was a little song she'd thought up earlier...

As she went to sleep that evening, Gladys felt relaxed. No more portal problems, no more people trashing days of work...

She took a glance over at the figurines, sitting by her bed in the darkness; the little orange jumpsuited one with the white gun...

Maybe tomorrow, she wouldn't feel so bad...

Gladys should give Chell a little kiss on the cheek as she leaves. Chell should wink.

    Still, wonderfully done.

Yeah, that's why it is beautiful.

I now have an end story in my head of Chell killing herself weeks later, Gladys receiving her diary, and... its heart-breaking.

I'd rather see it as a failed attempt, gladys stumbling on the diary and the companion cube she smashed before chell moved out while having the job to bring her clothes at the hospital...
    >> Axel the Possum 05/19/11(Thu)01:08 No.14976362
    >>14976334

That'd have been fun to include, wouldn't it? Chell getting a cube dice, or the Companion Cube figurine since Gladys knows it's Chell's favourite and, since she's no longer playing the game, she has no need for it...

If you prefer, feel free to include that in your own mental picture of the story.

    I love /tg/, and I love storytime.
I think it really speaks to the quality of the board when we can think up different endings and respect the ideas we put forth.
Sadly, the Intelligent Design debate on the front-page is draining my hope for us.

No, it CAN be sarcastic. It's also used as the lead-in to a round of applause, particularly during emotional final scenes in 80's movies, which you'd know if you weren't 12.
