    Idea for a setting, /tg/.

What if the United States, Great Britain, Russian, China and India all suddenly disappeared?

The countries simply vanish into thin air. The people in the country are gone too and water now covers what used to be land.

Now how do you think the rest of the world would react? What would the governments of the remaining countries do? Help me flesh out this concept.

Their relative peacefulness does not depend on there being ocean in Petrograd or not. They depend on the interconnectedness of our economy, and the fact whatever war can achieve you can often achieve easier with softer coercion.

So like half the world's population, half the uranium, 95% of the coal, 40% of the known oil reserves(at least it's not the cheap oil), 70% of the armed forces, 98% of the ICBMs, 95% of the strategic and tactical nuclear warheads.

Question: Do the US forces stationed around the world also vanish?

The French are the only ones left with a blue water navy capable of power projection.

Germany has the most MBTs, artillery, and a standing army matched only by the French.

The Japs will either try to keep order by taking up America's position in the pacific, necessitating a change in their constitution, or they will stay insular. Probably the first one, since they rely on the US for defense and equipment other than their domestic tanks.

Canada has some old NORAD stuff and would be the premier ICBM power if they have any stocks left(did all US or Russian military equipment disappear?). And has to convert its cutters to cruisers.

EU is going to have to do alot more spending since the US pays for 60% of the cost of European NATO, mostly the equipment and deployment costs.

Or will the EU fractionate and the European powers all become sea empires?

Well, the four up-and-coming world powers at the moment are the "BRIC" nations: Brazil, Russia, India, China. As the only one not removed, my money would be on Brazil to form an effective hegemony of at least South America, and potentially the southern hemisphere.

Absent Anglo-American resistance, elements of political Arab-Islamist groups would attempt to establish a Caliphate stretching all the way to al-Andalus, but would eventually be thrown back, albeit at significant cost to the defenders.

NATO would be led by France and Germany, with Canada playing a huge logistical basing role but - being isolated - being otherwise limited in its inputs.

As the five countries have disappeared, anything within them at the time is gone too. Any weapon caches and military forces not in the countries at the time are still around.

Let's say they don't - only those located on the countries when they disappear disappear; this also holds true for visitors, however, as a visitor from Germany to the US disappears. The more "civilized" countries welcome the now-vanished countries' soldiers as experienced armed forces while the less "civilized" see them as weak enemies.

You'd see a homefront scenario. North Korea annexes South Korea rather bloodlessly, then they annex Japan because Japan can't defend itself for dick anymore. The Middle East either drops back into the Ottoman stage of things or reverts even further to the 1100's style of a bunch of different nations warring over land and water.

South America turns into a warzone between the South American countries as each vies for control over Brazil's resources.

Well in that case all the carrier groups and air wings would descend on Mexico and take it over. "We did it once before boys, we'll do it again."
Or they could join with Canada creating a new nation. On second thought, that is most likely, Canada and US are nearly identical besides one flying slightly right and the other flying slightly left so US citizens would be at home there. Really even the US forces stationed overseas would still be hegemonic(at least in naval terms) if all that is left with power projection are Germany and France. Though the EU would have more MBTs now and hence be the major land power if it stayed united.

The question is: without any enemy powers would France or Germany try to stop the US/Canada from taking over South America? I kinda doubt it. And for all of Canada being less willing to go to war, they have lost the biggest exchange of trade on the planet, and empire would be one of the few ways to make up that loss of revenue.

Now any Chinese forces stationed abroad will likely make a b-line for the new island nation of Mongolia. South Korea would likely take the chance to occupy North Korea. Or maybe they would be forced to as the DRK spazzes out now that China is gone. Turkey and Israel will probably keep the Middle East from forming any Caliphate through threat of nukes. Remember that Turkey as a shitton of US ICBMs. And Poland now has the only working ABM system, since the other two were in Alaska and Moscow.

There may be a new scramble for Africa among the European powers. The reason we don't have good old fashioned imperialism anymore is because there are antagonistic empires with nukes, so no one can openly go around using nukes to conquer the world. But now all the main powers are on fairly amiable terms so imperialism is back on boys.

At any rate your great powers will be Canada(US forces optional), EU(or the French and German Empires individually), and Japan(if they can retrofit their military for offensive action). Secondary powers will be Australia, and maybe Brazil. Expect Argentina to be bitching and declaring it justice and so on and acting like a regional power until a carrier group parks off their cost.

I think the US forces would immediately ally themselves with Canada. But they would take advantage of their nuclear arsenal by suing it to influence the Canadian government's actions. Soon, the military would end up calling all the shots for the country.

My mother was going on about a book about exactly this.

I've only read one book by this guy, and it was about some 2050s american fleet being sucked through a time-portal to the battle of midway. Basically an excuse for railguns vs zeros, iirc. Of course, a bunch of mulsim terrorists got through the portal too and were "rescued" by the japanese. And I think hilter cut a deal with stalin in response to the new threat or something.

Easy answer, EU would reign supreme and Brazil becames the new american superpower and an economic powerhouse in its own right. Israel, now without USA support, faces oblivion and joins the now almighty EU. Africa either blooms or becomes subjugated by Brazil/EU. The now united Korea takes "control" of the whatever is left from Asia and becomes the newest superpower in the world.

And yes, I think the only thing stopping the United States of Europe from happening right now is the UK. It's insane.

As a geologist I have to say no to the oil. There is not alot of oil in Africa in comparision to even Russia or the US. Now there is the advantage that African oil is fairly cheap to get out of the ground. Likewise they have some gas, but nothing compared to the US or Russia, which were the main holders of reserves.

The main gas provider would likely be Oman followed closely by Canada(it has more reserves but some of it is hard to get to).

Canada and Brazil will be the major timber sources.

Europe and Canada will really have to encourage agriculture to make up for the loss of the US and western Russia. China produced more total crops but hardly exported any. But with India and no one giving a shit about Africa, I can't see any famines occuring in Europe, Japan, or Canada.

Fishing production will also increase. Shallow seas are often very good fisheries and now half of Asia and North America are shallow seas.

Australia will be the major uranium supplier.

And without the US or Russia Chile is just about the only place with Copper and South Africa has most of the Chromium.

Europe is now the biggest holder of Iron though.

Coal is the big problem. Canada has most of what would be left. And instead of a 300 year reserve we might only have a 100 year reserve even with half the industrial powers gone. Africa doesn't have coal for shit.

    OP here.

So, what I'm seeing right now it Canada having control over the oceans in the western hemisphere and being allied with large amounts of former US military forces. Other American military groups work as mercenaries for other nations and a few become pirates.

Korea makes an attempt to take over Asia while Austria tries to keep to itself. Turkey and Iran try to control parts of the Middle East as the region enters chaos. Some new powers start rising in Africa.

Brazil becomes a superpower that gets in some brushes with Canada. The two nations are wary of each other but don't want a fullscale war to break out. Europe is united by the leaders Germany and France although there are some civil troubles with a few of the nations.

People start using older tech and the Scandinavians ally with Canada to avoid war.

Well, the global communication grid goes to shit real fast, and with no rare-earths production, it won't be back any time soon.

That much more water on the surface of the earth would quickly increase the turbulence of the atmosphere, through a massive increase in evaporated water in the atmosphere, causing absolutely fuckhueg storms, including very frequent, retard-mode hurricanes.

The sudden disappearance of the land masses, combined with the storms, would make global travel much more difficult, if not impossible.

    Oh shit.

Well Brazil will have a big manufacturing boom, China being their main competitor for that sort of thing, but they'll also have a big shock in a lot of other areas since China is a big trading partner too.

Africa gets even more fucked since China is a massive investor.

South America will have a big shock without the US, China and Russia. They might seriously collapse.

The EU is massively dependent on Russia for energy, but is also wary of them because of security concerns. Iran stands to profit massively as Europe's next energy supplier - this might push them towards reform as their middle class will explode.

The UK is a big source of European military power, but without Russia they don't really need a powerful blue water navy and a large worldwide land force. Germany and France will probably benefit massively from the loss of the other world powers - especially Germany, who practically bankrolls the rest of the EU already.

Without China and India, looks like Brazil and Mexico are going to be the next world powers if they can survive the loss of their largest trading partners. But with China gone and Europe stalled Mexican manufacturing and R&D might be able to jump to centre stage.

Overall, I guess Germany is in the best position. They could become the dominant nation as long as they survive the loss of Russian energy supply. Canada could become a massive player too - they've got a lot of energy reserves and they're a well developed first world democracy.

    >Think that carriers, US or otherwise, have only a few weeks of provisions or fuel. Despite them taking weeks to get anywhere in the first place and only putting into port every two months.

    Oh, you.

It's likely that the US and Canada would kind of merge along with the English carrier groups and cruiser formations. It would pretty much become the United Anglo Federation and start trying to talk Australia into joining and opening up relations with Japan in the US's stead.

So I see two main power blocks.

    The EU and Neo-Canada/Anglo Empire.

Africa would probably go to the EU.

The Middle East would remain independent except for Iraq which would get annexed by Neo-Canada. Afganistan would be dropped like the dog turd it is. South American would get fucked by the new Canada.

Southeast Asia is mostly left alone for the moment except for the Philippines or Taiwan which would probably be allied to Canada.

Japan will probably side with Canada.

Mexico may be annexed or join the new-Canada.

My question is what would this Anglo Empire call itself? Nominal civilian control would be Canadian. But the military interests would be dominated by the Yanks and Limeys.

Canada has won every post apocalyptic scenario since the Chrysalis in 1955. Do you want to know why? They would, that's why. As technologically advanced as the major powers and a surplus of the valuable resources. Without anyone to sell them to like in this situation they could rebuild their economy to exploit them for themselves.

Because they already do. Ya know with Japan and Canada being two of the US's closest allies. And if Canada took in the remnants of the US military then their responsibilities and bases would kinda transfer too. As compared to Europe, which is nominally allied to Japan, but has not mutual defense treaties with them. Europe would have the biggest economy even without the UK. Hence why people suggest that the combination of the UK/US/Canada would likely start annexing the Americas in order to build themselves back up.

The question is: would Europe grow back the balls that got cut off in WW2 and take over Africa? Would Europe restore its glory and reach even higher? Don't disappoint.

Kinda isolationist, accept with the USA. Focus on special forces rather than standing armies since WW2. The urban population is left leaning, the rural population is about as right leaning as the rural population of the US. Fishing and hunting, it's a North America thing, nobody kills as much shit as North Americans. Don't get as enthused as Hispanics or Americans, think slightly upper crust British.

    OP here.

So here are the major powers as far as I can see:

    - Canada w/American and British military forces
    - Brazil which controls South America
    - European Union w/Turkey
    - African nation
    - Korean-Japan faction
    - Iran

Canada would have a powerful military compared to the other nations, as well as access to many resources. They would be on shaky terms with all other nations and possibly at war with Brazil.

EU would rely on other nations and Turkey for resources. They would be possibly allied with Canada and would also assist other nations. It would be led primarily by Germany and France.

Due to it's resources, Africa would have some new power slowly rise up. Other countries would probably try and take over parts of it.

The middle east would be in chaos until Turkey intervenes. Japan and Korea would have a conflict but end up united to survive. Australia would be the new Switzerland.

Dear everyone voting Canada for World Power: Please explain how we recover from losing our multi-billion-dollar-a-day trade with the US. Similarly, please explain how we become "the naval power" when we only have one sub per ocean, and no aircraft carriers?

I think we would become the supply depot for France vis-a-vis how we are now for the US and the Francaphonie would form a new hegemony of some type. We see France doing so now in Libya and the Ivory Coast. They have the will to return to colonialism/imperialism.

The question is what will happen to the Commonwealth without Britain. Would Australia make an overtures at Canada, or vice versa? Could Canada maintain a dual membership in the Francaphonie and Commonwealth in this new world?

We just need to figure out an "in" with Brazil and we'd be basically Bros with almost every possible hegemony.

That's quite a realistic scenario if it weren't for the USA influence. Canada has a shitload of resources and even if a direct border with the EU sounds great for the US, the drawbacks are too many.

There is even a surprisingly high number of cubans who want their country to rejoin Spain after the current regime ends. Sounds crazy until you realize that, once the Castro bros are gone, Cuba would possibly return to a situation not unlike the one during the Batista days, with the approval of the US, of course. Of course, Spain doesn't have the money to update Cuba's infrastructures so this sounds unlikely, but with Germany behind it? Not so crazy anymore.

Going back to the setting, Cuba would easily prosper under the shadow of Canada and Brazil, turning into a free port for all the mercancies being shipped between oceans. Also, mercenaries. Mercenaries everywhere.

Well the British forces pulled what Germany did in Africa during WW1. If you can't beat'em lead'em around and only fight when you are on top of a steep hill. Eventually they US expeditionary force ran low on supplies, sacked York, then withdrew while they burned down towns on the way out. Latter half that force was sent south along the coast to fight British sea forces they thought would land. And the Canada/British army used the opportunity to come down and coordinate with a British Naval taskforce that assaulted Maryland by sea to burn down Washington.

More like played the waiting game very well, than "kicked the shit out of them". Credit goes to the British commander for his excellent strategy.

Brazil, like many countries, simply does not have the logistics to do anything outside their own continent. Even if they did have a war, Brazil's only option against Canada would be to zerg rush it, in a temperate climate with harsh weather from time to time.

Also, Canada becomes the new seat of the British Crown (for whatever good that would do without Britain). Also, Canada is pretty close with the rest of the Europeans... without the US and Chinese trade, Canada would probably just join the European Union, replacing Britain... just a little further away (and a lot more rich in resources).

doubtful. The pirate craze of the 16th-18th century was due to the huge amount of gold and silver the Spanish were transporting out of Mexico and South America, and later the very prosperous sugar plantations in the Caribbean.
Today, it's much more likely that you'd see this around the East Indies with the large amount of oil and rubber coming out of there, and could possibly be expand all the way up to Japan depending on how they take care of their trade.

Pic Related for "adjusted rankings" (basically, everyone moves up five).

Five of the top ten military powers are European/Mediterranean. I doubt there would be much conflict there. Everyone has too much to lose.

Either South Korea or Japan outweigh North Korea, which would probably collapse without Chinese Aid. Korea unifies under the government of the South.

Indonesia. Major regional player now. No real resistance in the area aside from Taiwan. Anyone know their relation status? Would they hook up and dominate SE Asia?

Brazil. Huge gap between it and the rest of the region. Argentina is the only other "ranked" nation at what would be 28th. Chavez leads Brazil, right? Petty Dictator who likes nationalizing things? Expect lots of upheaval there. Does Brazil care at all what France/Germany do at present? f I recall correctly, Brazil sent aid to Ghaddafi. They're totally shit-disturbers. They even have an Aircraft Carrier for some force projection. The remainder of their navy is even on par with France. It may take some work to keep them contained/off Canada's back. That would be the real story in this scenario.

Canada may shift to becoming more nationalist as they are thrust onto the world stage, but the military here has absolutely 0 cultural impact and I don't see them shifting towards military rule. A reinstated monarchy sounds interesting, but is also pretty unlikely what with Quebec already not being happy as part of Canada (and as part of the British-Canadian Kingdom? Nope).
Canada, Brazil, Argentina, and Ukraine are probably the only countries capable of feeding themselves and exporting a lot of food out. Germany, France, Mexico, the Netherlands, and much of Southeast Asia will probably be able to get by relatively well. The rest of the world will be starving with the US, China, India, and Russia gone, though. In the immediate term, food is going to be a major concern which is why the more agricultural countries will see a dramatic rise in prosperity.

Might as well be. He controls the media, the economy is at the mercy of his whims. He is running his country into the dirt. There is very little chance that any good he has done could be sustainable in the long run.

And I doubt all his political prisoners think they live in a democracy. Hiter was also elected and was hugely popular, that doesn't mean that Nazi Germany was not a dictatorship.

And you're right, Europe is not socialist, but describing it as Welfare-State-ish is just lame. And in this setting it's an empire, not because there is an emperor, but because of it's expansionist nature, trying to get all countries with valuable resources inside the Federation.

I'm not denying that Canada would experience a large increase in its military, I'm just saying that they wouldn't take over the government. Countries that have military takeovers are either shitholes beset by civil war, or countries that have long had a powerful and independent military that is held in high esteem by the people (Turkey, for example, where the military has seized power several times in the last 60 years). Canada is neither, so while their armed forces would swell, it would have a negligible impact on their government.

    American here

I wouldn't mind this world either if I happened to be out of the country at the time this happens. Let's say it happens in American summertime, since that's when most Americans who go on vacation travel abroad.

We assume all Americans abroad go to Canada, plus the bulk of the American military abroad and the British military abroad. Then Norway and Canada become joined because of the Norwegian heir to the British empire thing.

I pledge allegiance to the True North.

I frankly don't know. But the system isn't the issue. It's the fact that Europe pumps lots and lots of money into agriculture to keep prices up, productions down, others out etc. It's jsut a mess and major waste of money. All for the sake of being not dependent on import. Also it destroys economies in Africa.

I am certain the military forces of America and Britain would each have their own interests, plus Canada suddenly becoming a superpower would probably increase nationalism and the militarism that goes with it.

Maybe not a military takeover, but there would definitely be a rise in hawkish tendencies in the new Canadian politics.

In all likelihood I'm sure he's incredibly far down the list, but since he actually got elected Prime Minister a while back he came to mind first.

Also, what is Serbia doing in that list? I thought they had their own independent royal family?

Alot of the populists are also puppets. The older ones are unpopular because back in the cold war we had to install them. Now we just bribe them with trade agreements.

Chauvez is popular, but he is also That Guy. Instead of "I'm going to raise taxes on the rich to get revenue" it's "I'm going to redistribute land, not just from the rich but also the kulaks, er um I mean, middle class". You can argue where or not you like his urban policies, but his agricultural ones are full retard and have not worked. But more importantly he tried the same shit that has never worked, ever. He doesn't seem to have a big problem with free press though, usually.

Basically he is a self assured moralist cock at times. Life expectancy is up but so is poverty, though neither of those are particularly because of him. The most credit you can give him is for literacy programs. Though I question spending money on teaching the elderly to read, when most of them are retired and looked after by their family already.

Whoa whoa whoa, slow down champ.

About the theocratic party- what you say is correct, and actually you need to say even more. They are all a bunch of lying punk ass bastards.

Now, let's illuminate things a little.

*Kurds: we do not oppress the Kurds. It is however true that the Kurdish majority is not very well taken care of by the state (they lack education and money). This prompts them to join the PKK, which proceeds to kill our people. The army retaliates, driving Kurds out of their homes. The PKK doesn't lay its ars down, and until they do, this will continue going like that. The fact that their captive leader is kept well-fed and in a good state by our excellent politicians is of course one of the factors obstructing peace with the Kurds.

*Cyprus: its invasion was justified, and whoever says otherwise doesn't know shit.

*Greece: yeah, we should make peace with them. However, the fact that they who were the first invaded us after WW1 makes relations between the countries hard. Greece also acts hostile towards us, by the way. Well actually, the majority of people here have no problems with the Greeks, and likewise they don't have problems with us. But you know how it is...

*"Armenian genocide": didn't happen. I will not talk further on it here, because it will derail the thread.

    >*"Armenian genocide": didn't happen. I will not talk further on it here, because it will derail the thread.

Whether there was a concentrated effort to wipe out the Armenians in Anatolia or the mass deaths were simply an effect of the Turks moving millions of armenians out of turkey may be in contention, but the fact that Turkey owes armenia some kind of apology is not. It doesn't have to be lots of money, but an admission that a great number of people died or were forced out of their land would go a long way to rehabilitating turkey's image in european eyes. Also Cyprus is greek, most of the turks there were born in turkey. That's just Ossetia tier dickery.
