I still say bonepedes works best.

"If either of the two skeletons you can see has two legs on one segment raised, raise the leg on the vertebra to the same side as that skeleton."

    Should be simple enough.
    >> Anonymous 11/26/10(Fri)14:26 No.12939239
    reposting for everyone, a summary:

So, really now, if skeletons can be the computing mechanism as well as the transmission medium, what can't we do?

This drastically reduces the numbers needed for the undead population, but DOES imply we will need some sort of superstructure to do the computation in. Encryption from the user to data in bits can be done with a mechanical device(I love the skull keyboard in >>12939011) and we can have a floating image interpreting the bit output using magical illusions.

What is left to design? Obviously this Lich is a megalomaniac, and has slaughtered the living throughout the material planes.

His primary enemy is the Maruts, looking to end his life(damn inevitables). Theres a strong reasoning to make him an artificer lich as well(bridging the magic-mechanical gap) also, that would allow us to use more than JUST undead.

I am using this concept for a BBEG in my next fantasy game, and I dont even play D&D!

Incidentally, I'm a little vexed you used a term that only came up a couple of times in the discussion and doesn't introduce the concept to new arrivals.

We'll hardly get many new heads in the thread without the explication we're discussing undead-powered Turing-complete computers!

This was from the last thread, but I posted just as it was dying, so I am copypastaing this.

    Dear /tg/, I had a thought.

Imagine a vast dungeon comprised of 5'x5' rooms with doors at the cardinal directions. Doors are initially set open or closed.

Skeletons are then given instructions like "Close the door behind you everytime you enter a room" "Only go through open doors" "If a W door is closed, open it"

You push the skeletons in through an "input" and see what the output data is. Doors are logic gates. Now you have skeleton amplifiers, rectifiers, flip-flops, etc.

You could make these into quantum gates by painting doors and having them recognize only one colour, or making it a cube with doors in the floor and use subjective gravity.

    What do you think?
And captcha has named the device a

    >> Anonymous 11/26/10(Fri)14:37 No.12939290
Actually, instead of adding more limbs, we could always make it pure binary and just use more creatures.
If some massively fast-breeding creature was used, something generally ascribed as vermin- especially something that's already small and simple and that has a decent skeleton: something like that may be a better choice, as it'd be harder to confuse with overly-complicated orders.
It means more casting, but it's much more doable.

    We'd need the following:
    - At least one joint that can be bent or unbent
    - Enough intelligence and/or eyesight to recognise the joint as bent or unbent
    - The ability to understand orders
    - The ability to understand "if either of the two bugs you can see has (joint) bent, bend your (joint)" or whatever
    - A skeleton
    - Small size
    - Fast/very fast breeding

    Rule of cool says
"Make the necromancer use the dead of the race that the PC's are playing."

It is less over the top villainy to get a single designed race, when the alternative is indiscriminately killing for millenia to get the number of orcs, humans, elves and dwarves that you need.

Please, your logic is sound, but your coolness is lacking.

Throwing in my two cents' worth...
Would having multiple levels to said dungeon affect possible computing power, by adding in spear-like objects which run between floors?
    >If/then skeletons: if spear is up, raise left hand, extend right hand down, jaw open, shrug
Does that reduce the number of skeletons required by any?

I see where you're coming from, and I can't demure.
However, I'm looking it from a secondary point of view- while I'll agree that, as a BBEG or part of a campaign setting, Rule of Cool is better, I'm also partially looking at the logical extremes.

Partially because it'd be an interesting campaign setting where microcorpse necro-computers were relatively commonplace...
    >> Anonymous 11/26/10(Fri)14:47 No.12939354
Someone had the idea in the last thread that a lich might spend a few dozen millennia specifically breeding a new species of giant centipede, one with a mammalian lineage, so multi-legged skeletons could be created from their dead.
With a race like that, you'd reduce the number of undead needed by a few orders of magnitude, while at the same time contributing to the HOLY SHIT factor when the players discover the true extent of the lich's plans.

Use Crawling Claws instead of Skeletons. They can receive instructions up to 15 words +1/level of creator. Tiny size, harvest four from the same corpse that a skeleton would produce, each one is separately taskable, and has five "bits" to shift on and off if you want to get that far into it.
    >> Anonymous 11/26/10(Fri)14:49 No.12939362
    >>12939351
AHA! I was basing this off the predetermined assumption of uniqueness, but if you want a more copyable model to work with, go with something like minaturized kobold skeletons and multiple liches.

You can appreciate my points then, from the singular computer view?
    >> Anonymous 11/26/10(Fri)14:49 No.12939365
    >>12939339
Unlikely. It'd take more intelligence in the skeleton than is required to emulate body-part changes, and the spear would have to be held- taking up the fingers- or tied-on, limiting the positions available to the arm for moving.

Once again, we do not need mindless undead, and we only need millions of completely dedicated undead.

It's fine, because anyway, there is no simple way to create and control millions of skelettons. But there's a really simple to control millions of sentient undead slaves, through the create spawn ability some of them have.
Enslave a few wights, make them create armies of spawns, they are intelligent enough to use a great number of signs.

And Necromputer is a better name that Skeletron anyway.

Question, just how much can skeletons "feel"? Are they aware of when someone or something, say, tugs on them? Because if they are, and we can get an AoE Gentle Repose working, why not use sinew to set up a system where two skeletal hands are connected to one another, and when one hand recieves orders from the tugging in one hand, it sends new orders to another couple of hand by tugging in other ropes?

Take one from a group of five hands, strap it to a hand from a different group; that one would be programmed a bit different, to read from another hand's cues, so to speak.

There was an issue earlier about how the Lich could control so many undead without just handwaving it. One idea is that the Lich doesn't directly control the machine itself anymore, merely sets it up.
As it was mentioned earlier, a sufficiently large and advanced Necromputer such as "Deep Rot" would be able to cast spells as logic functions, and as its size increased, so would its caster level at an exponential rate. The undead AI itself would be in charge of keeping the skeletons under control.

Of course, the question then is how the Lich kept the skeletons in check until they were advanced enough to do it themselves.

Crawling Claws are AD&D and don't require hand-waving, because there are no limits to the number of undead you can control.

This isn't "how would you do this in d20." You'd have to do the skeleton thing in 3.x, because Crawling Claws became a swarm and are unable to be controlled individually.

If you need to know, well, this is it.

I stopped dreaming long ago, I think that happend when my brain finished rotting, long ago. But, when I was getting exhausted of the futility of existance, I dream't of nothing. Actually, I dreamt of Nothingness. And it didn't spoke to me, but I heard the words not spoken clearly. And it was glorious in a way you wouldn't understand, trapped within that organic tissue.

The thing is, I realized that we have an unsurmountable barrier for existance. We cannot free ourselves of existance itself, as we live in a world of Being. We are slaves of existance. But Nothingness --or Unexistance, to be more precise-- is boundless, as it is exactly nothing infinitely, not expressed and, thus, limitless. It is absolute freedom to not Be a specific thing at all, to not be bound to a single shape or form...

...it is power absolute. The problem is, that when the gods created the world, instated Being onto us, and forced us to Be what we are and nothing else. And there is some kind of metaphysical barrier (actually, it is ontological, as one of your philosophers would say) that makes us unable to reach Unbeing. And also, that makes what Is Not impossible to become Being.

Well, that was so until I figured out what to do.
