Recent Events Summary:

You've worked with Yi Fang, Hemmelus, and Adavan to trace the other end of Donovan's parasite. It is beneath the cathedral near the center of the Dobshire castle town.

You snuck into the church dedicated to the four Greater Elementals, trying to find a way down. To your surprise, Arcturis, Donovan's father, and Matthel, a strong supporter and Donovan's second oldest brother, came in behind you. Matthel seemed to be trying to persuade Arcturis out of something.

The snippets of conversation you caught were incriminating. You decided to followed them.

And indeed, the two lords led you through the maze-like catacombs beneath the church and to a secret elevator hidden within. You slipped inside before the doors shut.

Below the cathedral, in a cavern inside the bowels of the bedrock of Dobshire, was the 3rd Highest angel, Metatron, and a summoning sigil the likes of which you'd never before seen. It had components of every element, and you found the parasite depositing the last element it was stealing from Donovan - Light.

Arcturis demanded to speak with Metatron, who subsequently communicated to them through a magical mirror. Arcturis had been a reluctant party to the proceedings, but unlike Matthel, did not know that the spell would harm Donovan - he was led to believe it would simply drain his magical talent, leaving him otherwise intact.

Arcturis confronted Sandalphon with this information. Sandalphon admitted that he'd lied, but the pressure of the Empire's power was able to force Arcturis into a grudging silence.

Upon exiting the passage, your allies cut them off at the entrance to the cathedral. You intervened before Donovan's passion bested his judgement, restraining both him and Matthel. Thinking quickly, you forced Arcturis to put together the facts. With Yi Fang's testimony that the shel'kath parasite eventually took the life of its host, Arcturis decided to jump ship and join your alliance, thus subverting the Empire's leverage over his country.

Matthel, however, placed more stock in the angels, and upon hearing his father's capitulation, used the Windburn to break free of your Shadow Control and blast away your party. Thankfully, your body and Yi Fang's shield were able to protect the others, but after the explosion, you were the only one in shape to chase after Matthel.

You pursued him into the bowels of the cathedral, and managed to subdue him. However, you let your guard down, and he used the opportunity to warn Metatron to release the sigil's anchor and move it to safety.

Arcturis, Hemmelus, and yourself have entered the sigil cavern to stop Metatron, but he's not going to go down easily.

The sigil doesn't change; 3 points of the 8 are still bound to the ground.

There's still a heat in the air, but it's cooled, like lava after rain. Arcturis raises his sword and points it at Metatron. "3rd Highest. End the transport of this sigil, now, or I will use lethal force."

Metatron presses his back against the cavern wall and slides to his feet. His hand clutches a stalactite. "...Arcturis...why are you doing this?"

"Sandalphon lied to me." He gestures with his blade. "He thinks he can use me, use my family, and get away with it. His plan is mad, and so is the risk to Donovan's life. He's stuck in the past, and the rest of the world is moving on without him. It's time he woke up and realized that. End the spell!"

"...ah, Arcturis. Great Sage. John Nyx." He raises his head, still clasped in shimmering iron. "If only you knew the past yourselves...you'd be stuck there as well."

"What say you?!" Arcturis demands.

"I say..." Metatron finally regains his feet. "That I haven't done this in a long time."

He begins to unbuckle his chestplate. It falls to the ground.

His skin is burned. Terribly, horribly burned, browned, cracked, mottled, like leather left in the sun and then baked over a fire. How he can move at all without searing pain is beyond you.

"My armor isn't meant to protect me from the likes of you," Metatron says. His gauntlets fall, and then his pauldrons. His armor was perfectly fitted to his skin, perhaps with its own padding - his only clothing is thick cotton pants and woolen socks.

"...Arcturis..." Hemmelus's eyes widen. "Arcturis, get back, NOW!"

The light on his chest ignites. Blue flames spreads over his skin, licking up his neck and down his legs. He clenches his fists. "It protects me from myself."

REMINDERS:

Last thread people seemed on board with the idea of using our magic attack reduction spell to hit Metatron before he used his new massive boost.

We can move perfectly fine underwater, he likely cant, so shoving our fight into the river might be a good idea. We also regenerate while underwater.

VERY IMPORTANT: We cannot afford to use shards unless doing so would only require a little boost from it to make our already decent roll good. If one more shard hits Weakened or lower, we trigger a Seal breach.

We’re still very high on HP thanks to Hemmelus, we should probably keep tanking and relying on physical ability while the others exploit openings we make.

The third plan is obviously out since it's both not proactive and doesn't assist our comparatively less supernatural allies.

The first is preferred, mostly because Frostbiting to protect Arcturis specifically means we're underdefended, while all of Hemmelus' defenses so far have been AoE.

If we plan on getting up into Metatron's face, we're going to need the higher-power single-target shielding on ourself, and we can rely on Hemmelus' incidental shielding and our efforts to get him into the water to help take the brunt of the heat lol off of the other two.

If our goal is getting him into the river (to dampen his aura and keep him from continuing work on the sigil), Frostbiting ourselves makes doing so far safer, while Frostbiting Arcturis makes him more able to stay in close quarters with Metatron while leaving us exposed. We have Weak Fire resistance, so I'm not sure I'm comfortable with staying unprotected while in combat with Metatron for any protracted period.

A wall of blue fire barrels toward you.

Arcturis two-hands his sword, gripping it tightly, and his Windburn flares. A green swirl of needles forms in front of him. You cast Frostbite and come up on his right flank. An icy haze coats the air around you, and your skin.

The blue fire rages into the green needles. They clash, the fire roiling against the Windburn. But the frosted air holds strong. You both hunker down in a tight funnel as the fire rolls around you with an angry roar, licking up the sides of the cavern.

The last dregs of Hemmelus's spell wash over you. You can feel the mage peek his head out from behind a stalagmite in the back of the cave. It's half melted to slag, now.

"Good move, John," Arcturis says. "But..."

You both glance at your foe. Metatron is immolated in blue fire; he looks like an elemental that's taken a human form. The heat you felt from before is redoubled several times over. Steam rushes up from the river.

Arcturis is forced to coat his skin in magic - not the Windburn, but a protective layer of Wind nonetheless. Your regeneration halts entirely.

"I'm going to try to drive him into the river. Keep the fire suppressed."

"I'll back you up!"

Your aura begins to spin. Metatron raises his hand, and the blue fire at his palm turns bright white.

"I'll deflect it!" Hemmelus shouts. "Keep attacking!"

The shadows weave a cone around your body, ending in a sharpened, rotating point. Power gathered behind you. "Don't stand too close, Arcturis." The lord quickly backs away.

You explode forward. A white column of heat erupts from Metatron's palm. Hemmelus shouts. A white-blue wall of water and light surrounds you, layered on top of your Shadow. But your own spinning aura quickly eats away at the light portion of the spell - Hemmelus miscalculated. Or maybe he didn't expect your strength!

The fire grazes your left side. It's beyond hot, so hot it burns up your nerves and you can't feel it. You don't have time to feel it - you slam into Metatron, picking him up and soaring across the room with him pinned to the tip of your aura.

Blue flames attack you with a will of their own, burning with an angry hunger. Metatron's hands slip on your aura. In a moment, you plunge into the river.

Metatron sinks like a stone. Water all around you is flashing to steam. You rapidly swim backward, avoiding the worst of it.
