You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village. The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues. The visit with Agnes turned out to be pretty nice (after a rough start), but alas, all good things must come to an end. After Andreas flew Elena back to the castle, you and the others took a carriage to the arena early so that you can get ready for the big duel.>Congratulations, you are now an unruly WOLF!>Wolves are cool and powerful... and also rather dangerous.>The Princess now considers you to be her friend!>But while wolves are really cool, they still don't count as people.Thread archive:http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?searchall=Princess+Guard+QuestCharacter list + descriptions (in progress):http://pastebin.com/1Vhj4DJvList and descriptions of the spells shown thus far:http://pastebin.com/2c9y2sDMTwitter:https://twitter.com/QM_ArchelonQuest compilation that's kindly maintained by a person who isn't me:https://www.dropbox.com/sh/n4nhs9gd0kmnnni/04tpEy5_pe>>>>>>>>
As the carriage approaches the arena, you notice that there are a lot of people around... you guess that the King informed the common folk about your duel as well. After passing by the crowded main entrance, the carriage comes to a stop at a door with decidedly less traffic."This is the VIP entrance," Luciana explains. "And since you happen to be the main attraction, of course you're considered one!" she says, smiling at you."Most of this kingdom's aristocracy prefers to avoid interacting with the riffraff," Agnes sighs. "They complained so much that Celestino eventually had this entrance installed.""So it wasn't here originally?" Luciana asks. "I didn't know that...""It was back when -I- was a little girl, so I can't blame you for not knowing!" she laughs. After a quick security check (and a lot of apologizing on the part of the security staff once they found out who the carriage belongs to), they give you the go-ahead to exit the carriage. Since you're sitting right by the door, you leave first and then help Agnes down.Once everyone's out of the carriage, you hear the arena door opening and out comes... ...Sir Gregory!"I was wondering when you guys would show up," Sir Gregory says, sighing as he approaches. "...oh, and you brought Agnes with you. I thought she'd show up later.""Good morning, Gregory," Agnes says with a warm smile."And good morning to you," he replies. "I take it this is Luciana's doing?""Only incidentally!" Luciana says, giggling.>greet the Gregory!

"Good morning, Sir Gregory," you say with a slight bow. "sorry if we kept you waiting, how long until the duel starts?""Eh, you still have over an hour," Sir Gregory replies as he brushes some hair out of his eyes. "I just volunteered to be the one to wait for you because I didn't feel like sitting in one place for to long.""Oh, so the others are already here?" Luciana asks."Yeah, I had Nico go hold some seats for us in one of the booths, Celestino and Thierri are in the royal box too.""That's right, there are too many of us to fit in the royal box..." Luciana says with a LONG sigh."It'll just be me, Lisette, Thierri and Celestino," Sir Gregory replies with a shrug. "There's still more than enough room for you and Marianne to sit.""Father probably wants Emilio to be there, and that means that Karel will be there as well... she mumbles. "I suppose I'll just sit with Nicolette and the others then.""I'm sure that Nico'll be happy to hear that," he says with a chuckle. >>29639472Need to work it and get it to the point it becomes a gauntlet that we can use to parry or grab blades with.
Personally, I'd like to think that at this point, the king thinks of us an investment. While we could probably take on almost anyone in the basic military one on one, it's our potential he has some interest in. While we may not be god mode beast now, in say, a couple of years time, when we have a firm grasp of spells and usage of spells with swords, well be pretty close to a large part of the granache nobility inner circle, and almost unshakable in our loyalty to the queen and princess.
>>29639563How much more serious can we get though? We practiced when he had the opportunities to when we are at Granache, and during the timeskip we've been taking lessons from Arnaud and Sylvie as well as training. Some folks on IRC were talking about dice mechanics, and it got me thinking...The way I do it currently is taking the best of three rolls against a set DC, with critical successes and failures taking precedence over all other rolls. But that does kind of skew things, so someone else mentioned doing it so that said 1 and/or 20 rolls would only result in a critical if the other dice in a roll supported it.Basically, as an example:roll 1, 14, 19 with a DC of 14: successroll 5, 4, 20 with a DC of 14: successroll 3, 17, 20 with a DC of 14: critical successroll 2, 5, 6 with a DC of 14: failureroll 1, 3, 5 with a DC of 14: critical failureI'm perfectly willing to change it to this, but I'll leave it up to you guys. I prefer the system as it is. The spontaneity and possibility to succeed or fail in extreme ways at any time a roll is called for makes every so much more fluid, dynamic and... well, it's realistic isn't it?
>>29640706Dense means more than romantically unaware, anon.Hell, there's nowhere specific in it's definition that mentions romance. It's just being slow to realize something. Like every bad decision the players make him make.

>>29640776>So if you get a 1, 13, and a 14 on a DC of 14, do we critically fail?I had intended that to be a success, not a failure, seeing as one of the rolls meets the DC.There's still some tension with this method even if it's not the same kind people're used to. It just switches from "oh dear god, we succeeded but the next two guys could still fuck it up for everyone or do something totally crazy" to "ok, one of these poor schmucks rolled a one. please god someone save us."The only result I'm not terribly satisfied for how this system handles it is 1,1, Pass, since it would be treated as a success even if instinctively it doesn't feel like it should be one. That's a pretty narrow corner case, though.
"Nah, I should probably start getting ready as soon as possible," you say."Fair enough..." Sir Gregory says, sighing. "Nicolette wanted to wish you luck, but it's not like I don't get what you mean."Sir Gregory then waves over an attendant."Show Reinhold here to the preparation room, I'll be back shortly," Sir Gregory says to the man."As you wish," he replies, bowing deeply. "Mr. Reinhold?"The attendant motions for you to follow, but you stop and turn to the others first."Well, it looks like this is it," you say with nervous laugh. "I guess the next time I see you guys is after this is all over with.""Do try to win," Marianne says. "Monique is sure to become even more insufferable than before if you were to lose to him.""Seriously," Sir Gregory says, rolling his eyes. "He's fu- ANNOYING enough as it is."Agnes looks at Sir Gregory and chuckles to herself for a few seconds before hobbling over to you."I wish you the best of luck, Reinhold," Agnes says with a warm smile. "I understand all too well how nervous you probably feel, but just take a few deep breaths and focus on your opponent. Not winning or losing or any of that. Watch his movements and act accordingly.">[1/?]

>>29640973In the case of the 13 though, it would be a failing roll and therefore support the 1, resulting in a critical failure. The only one that would not support it is the 14.I'd just think it would be fair, especially since I think critical failures do not happen in this quest as much as critical successes, and significantly lowers the chance of one happening. (Not that I am hoping for them, but negating the chance of them happening seem off. )

>>29641038"Heh... thanks for the advice, Grandma," you say, smiling at her."I'm sorry that I couldn't do more to help out," Agnes sighs. "But considering the circumstances, basic advice is the best I can do.Smiling once again, Agnes strains a bit to straighten out her back before pulling you into a hug."Just do your best, that's all I ask," Agnes says as you return her embrace. "I want to be able to brag to old Celestino about how great you are!"As you let go of Agnes, you notice Luciana dabbing her eyes with a handkerchief... was it really that big a deal? But no mind, there's something else that you wanted to know about."Since I'll be dueling and you'll be with the King, who's going to watch over Marianne?" you ask."Haha, nice watching out!" Sir Gregory says, winking at you. "But you don't have to worry since I asked those two dragon kids from last night to babysit her while we're away. Celestino seems to have been pretty impressed with their performance last night in taking care of some sh- STUFF that went down so she ought to be in safe hands.""That's a relief," Marianne chimes in.>[2/3]

>>29641216The intent was that if there was any roll at all that passed the check, the whole check was a success regardless of if there were other failures, rather than the way you were interpreting it (that a critical roll would tip the other two rolls in its direction.)There's an argument against this system since it makes a 20 slightly more positive than a 1 is negative, but it was intended as a way to justify a QM making criticals in general, and critical failures in particular, more impactful without those more-game changing crits being a common enough occurrence for them to constantly derail players' plans.

>>29641616I'd prefer an alternate reality where Volker's friend Adrien brought Citrine and Reinhold to Agnes when Volker died before he went off on his mission of revenge.
>>29641476I don't think it really changes the odds of success/failure in general so much that upping a given DC will usually be necessary; failures under the old system will more or less be failures under the new system as well.Deciding to 'normalize' rolls but ALSO make them more likely to fail in general kind of defeats a lot of the purpose. The main thing this changes DC-wise (and something that actually drew me to this way of handling things in the first place) is that it makes higher DC checks become harder to critically succeed, since it decreases the number of rolls that will 'confirm' a 20.>>29641473>>29641509No matter what else happens during this duel, I'll be happy with literally anything but this.

I think rolling two high rolls that succeed cancelling out a 1 is more fair than needing a 20 to cancel out a 1, and the situation has happened before in the quest. Like how two failures could mess up a critical success, two successes should mess up a critical failure. It's just that when it comes to the point where it comes to cases like 1, 13, and 14 where becomes confusing, because one roll supports the critical failure, and one roll doesn't. Thankfully, 1 and 20s are rare, because as long as it doesn't make cases where 2, 3, and 18 would result in a failure, it's perfectly fine. >>29641716>scene change to brother side

>>29641803It looks like you're basically advocating for a system where a rolled 1 or 20 is more or less handled as a "drop [highest/lowest, respectively]".And yes, this system definitely does favor the 20 slightly; an "unconfirmed" 20 is still a success, after all, whereas an "unconfirmed" 1 is negated by any Pass on the DC.There was also some amount of discussion of a system that abolished the 1 and 20 from the die roll entirely, using them exclusively as a sort of critical "kicker" in a 2-19 DC structure; depending on how this hypothetical system would've been handled, maybe this would've been closer to what you're looking for.Either way, if testing shows this way of handling dice to be unsatisfactory, it's always possible to just go back to tried-and-true. I'm just glad it's getting a bit of in-the-open field testing.

And it's not really selected for enough to really cause large-scale spreading of it.

>>29642921>>MUH TRUE ROUTEthere are many true routes anon, except for sachin
>>29642865Try telling that to conservative americansI recall one story about a kid who was literally born without a brain. Just had a brain stem to control breathing and cardiac activity. And the mother wanted to keep it. Yeah, yeah, it's pure anecdote, but still.

>>29642865There are people who are against augmentation like the fuckers in dues ex human revolution right now, and you really think people as crazy as them would accept that?
>>29643021Personally I vote for Marianne and Luciana.
>>29643038After the last couple of threads, I don't think they do fit well. Marianne was never one of my favorites, but holy shit.
>>29643021Your taste is objectively terrible
>>29642921I feel the same way, I think all the support comes from true route shenanigans and the ranking system. I'd like Luci way more
>>29643111The last couple of threads was literally one morning.Ive not seen a xouple or long lasting friendship that didnt at least have one quarrel. .Even then she still wants fein to win at this stage despite the argument.
>>29642791>Hates greg>The person she used to idolize as her best friendwelp.
>>29642791As she enters the booth, Marianne is struck by how large it is. While the one that Father uses back home is quite large, this is simply a VIP booth and it still has enough room to seat plenty of people easily."Good morning, Princess!" Reya says as he seems to materialize next to her. "Since Reinhold isn't here, Sir Gregory asked me and Rana to act as your temporary protection in the meantime.""You're safe in our hands, Princess!" Rana says, turning around from her seat next to Nicolette to wave hello."That's nice to hear," Marianne replies."I'm surprised that you were even able to make it out here, Rana..." Reya says, shaking his head in a scolding manner."Did something happen?" Marianne asks, turning to him."Yes," Sylvie says, getting up from her seat to walk over to them. "Rana, Nicolette and Melanie here had a bit of a private party last night...""Umm, what?""C'mon, you don't have to tell on us like that, Sylvie..." Nicolette mumbles."Sir Gregory left some booze out, and all three of them got drunk," Sylvie says, glaring at them."...even Melanie?""Umm..." Melanie says, standing up from her seat next to Nicolette, "...I only had one glass so I wouldn't say that I was actually 'drunk,' so to speak...""Rana got plastered, though," Reya says, sighing. "I was REALLY worried when she didn't come back to our room last night but it turns out that she just crashed at the castle.">[2/?]
>>29643111they've had one or two arguments over the course of a month in which they spend half their waking time together. friends fight
If we're just voicing our opinions re: waifus, my personal favourites are as follows:Nicolette, followed closely by Sylvie and Rana.Unfortunately, Reinhold as-played-by-/tg/ I can only see as chaste, Marianne's toy once he eventually breaks and stops caring that she mistreats everyone around her, or ending up in an adventurer-duo-cum-relationship with Luciana.
>>29643165I dunno, I read it more as she wants the other guy to lose more than she wants Reinhold to. There's a massive difference between that and her really wanting Reinhold to win.
>>29643021>Rest>Including Mari.you are literally wrong in every way. There is no reason to like this broken bitch.
>>29643183>People still don't like RanaI don't see how people think
>>29643213Either provide good rationale for your claims and quit using the "ur wrong because bad" or just save your breath. Skub is skub.
>>29643183>Private partyOh ho ho ho~
>>29643165>>29643199it was less the fact that they fought, and more about he she felt like she had to rub it in that Elena had almost killed herself because we let her go on the trip.
>>29642921Yea, I'd rather not sink this friendship as well. We've lost half of our fleet already thanks to the Marconetti incursions.
>>29643203i see us more fixing mari up a bit so that she can get along with her old friends again, even if we don't go mari route
>>29643213>There is no reason to like this broken bitch.Except that she's broken and most males instinctively want to nurture and care for broken women.
>>29643203same, i under stand Marie because of the true route bullshit and her having the most screen time ,but luciana is what baffles me especially after the trauma bullshit card they pulled on both nico and sylvie.
>>29643260i thought she was trying to say not to string people along

>>29643204The thought process went with not wantinf rein to lose before the subject of monique came up. Honestly, its all pretty subjective but I see it that she holds on lasting ill will.
>>29643288She said that after we snapped. And there's not much we could have responded to that, considering it's spot on.
>>29643273Yeah, you learn to kill that instinct after the second go around. Well, that's not totally accurate...you learn not to engage with them romantically, help where you can and get them to get help where you can't, but keep your fucking distance.
>>29643273>>29643324>>29643326Guilty as charged

>>29643371It's obviously more "this is my chance to defend/prop up my waifu by throwing others under the bus!" Business as usual.
Goddamn, after all these shitstorms I hope Marconetti burns to the ground
>>29643371I'm thinking more of pussies who can't handle a strong independent black women.
>>29643371I don't know why they find this weird, since the early threads we know that Marianne and Greg have a problematic relation. It's because they're both short tempered, it takes someone like Rein to deal with her with her current emotional issues.
>>29643416Just report and filter.
>>29643371Gregory is husbando material. He's the most based character after Takamaru.>>29643400Oh, you're right.
>>29643356Missing the lesson.She is right.
>>29643416We all do. That would give Agnes, Luci and Elena excused to come visit us in Granache, indefinitely.
>>29643296Males have a caring/protective side, some more than others. This protective side attracts to broken women, because at some subconscious level they want to fix them. Women have the same predisposition, though it is slightly different. That in itself is a reason (though not a good one), to pursue Marianne.
>>29643447yeah, he's based as fuck, but marianne not liking him isn't new shit

>>29643468Bah, Luci can stay in that goddamn country, she basically propelled all this waifu business
>>29643183If they were stupid enough to drink the same alcohol that Sir Gregory does then they definitely deserve whatever happened to them."We're all fine now, so don't worry about that," Nicolette says, leaning her head over the back of her seat to look at Marianne. "All three of us have our wits about us and we're ready to cheer Reinhold on!""Ehehe..." Sylvie laughs. "...I'm really looking forward to seeing this duel!""And you're not the only one!" Luciana chimes in. "I'm going to be cheering the loudest of all!""We'll see about that..." Sylvie replies, looking at the red-haired princess from over the top of her glasses.Whichever one Reinhold ends up falling for in the end, there is no way that this will end well. As such, Marianne makes a mental note to stay faaaar away whenever the inevitable blowup happens. And at that exact moment, the door swings open."I'll have both of you know that I'M the one who's gonna be cheering the loudest for Reinhold!" Citrine says as she strolls into the booth."...Citrine?" Marianne says, turning to Reinhold's sister as she and her husband approach. "I would have thought that you two would be in King Celestino's booth...""Yeah, but Citrine said that she wanted to sit with Reinhold's friends and so here we are," Marius says, shrugging."Am I intruding?" Citrine asks. "I mean, we can always find anothrt VIP booth if we are...""No, there's more than enough room for both of you!" Luciana says as she skips over to Citrine and takes her hands. "This here is the Reinhold Cheering Section anyways, so you're more than welcome!">[3/5]
>>29643507is it sad that he's a bit too old for her?
>>29643496I hope your waifu does too, bub.
>>29643468Agnes doesn't really need to answer to anyone who could prevent her visiting.Luciana has plenty of excuses to visit Granache, especially if she can convince her father to let her pursue Reinhold.Elena... could fly if she wanted.
>>29643517Marianne wouldn't like that.
>>29643517...no, she didn't, because the sylvie faggots and the nicolette faggots and the marianne faggots were shitting up the thread way before Marconetti happened.
>>29643454I never said she wasn't. But there's a thing called tact, and saying "I hope you learned a valuable lesson from this." after shit went down shows that she has none.
>>29643273I don't think it's a natural instinct, I think it's caused by different reasons. Some people have fetish for that kind of thing. Some people are looking for an emotional crutch. Some people feel it's so fulfilling to help others that they dedicate their lives to dealing with other people's shit. There are plenty of other reasons too, but I think relatively few people have an actual 'instinct' that extends that far.
>>29643517Here here. Maybe Luci and Slyvie will fall into some sort of rival hate/love relationship and solve all our problems.
>>29643416It's only going to get worse once we get back to Granache.
>Marianne makes a mental note to stay faaaar away whenever the inevitable blowup happensc'mon arch, don't talk through your characters

"I assume that you want to sit next to me, Marianne?""Of course," Marianne replies."Alright, then..." Luciana turns to the Lanzmanns. "Feel free to sit wherever you like!""Thanks, Princess!" Citrine says cheerfully."Not in the front row, I don't want to risk a repeat of you nearly falling out like back during the first tournament.""Aww, you're no fun...""We -also- have a baby to worry about now, you know?""Yeah, I guess you do have a point after all..." she mumbles. After Citrine and Marius take a pair of seats behind Nicolette, Melanie and Rana, Marianne starts over to her own seat......and then the door flies open again. What now?"WAIT FOR MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!" Elena shouts as she practically flies into the room, Andreas chasing behind her.Thankfully, she's not -actually- flying this time."...oh, so Mother actually let you come after all," Luciana says, turning towards her little sister."She needs this pillow to sit down on, though..." It feels kind of nostalgic, helping Agnes like this... he hasn't done so since back when he and Volker used to hang out. Fucking shame what happened to him... Gregory had half a mind to run out there himself when he got the news, but it's in far better hands than his.And with any luck, Volker's been avenged by now and his soul is finally resting in peace.Luckily, Agnes walks pretty fast for an old lady and so they make it to the royal box before too long. Gregory would hate for Agnes to aggravate her arthritis any more than absolutely necessary, after all."Wait here for a second, I'll open the door," he says to the old lady."Thanks, Gregory... you've always been such a nice boy," Agnes replies, smiling at her old acquaintance."You're like the only one aside from Elena who actually thinks that," he says with a sad laugh."I guess that's one more thing that we have in common, eh?""Don't let Celestino hear you say that...">[1/?]
