The year is 1981, and you are Alfred Lynnell, college drop out, Vietnam war veteran, and now CIA agent working for Project ANTIGONE, a top secret, black book project that seeks to unlock the powers of the human mind. You don't have a lick of psychic potential, but your charges do.

Regrettably, the last mission ended with you shot and in a car wreck. The latest hit religion (Though you'd call it a cult) called 'Starlight' was the last thing your partner of two years ago was investigating before his assassination. Well. They called it a suicide, but you knew better.

At least Margaret was okay- a subject of Project ANTIGONE's experiments, a clairvoyant, a living spy satellite except better, and a 17 year old girl that is deathly afraid of insects. At least you kept her alive on your first outing as a ANTIGONE handler. Speaking of alive-

"Clear!" These idiots. You don't defrib for a stopped heart. Then, you feel lightning pour in to your chest.

Your eyes open, and you find yourself gasping for breath, on a table inside of ANTIGONE's lab. The first man you see is Mr. Johnson, a look of proud on his piggish, balding face. The next person you see is Emilia Blake, your supervisor, who looks singularly peeved on an office chair, chin on her hand.

"Welcome back, Mr. Lynnel," She starts, blue eyes looking unamused behind her glasses, "Want to start from the beginning?"

>[ ] "Where's Margaret?"
>[ ] "You don't treat bullet wounds with shock paddles. What happened?"
>[ ] "Did you know Starlight have psychics of their own?"
>[ ] Groan. You did just get shot, car wrecked, and now shocked in short order. Take a load off.

[X] "Where's Margaret?"

"Is Margaret okay? Is she hurt?"

First priority, the girl, we almost died bringing her somewhere safe. We need to be sure she's okay.

"Margaret," That's the first word out of your mouth, as you try to get a grip through all the soreness, "Is she safe? Is she still-"
"She's fine," Blake sounds irritated, "Last I saw, vomiting in a bathroom. Half dose, Lynnel, really?"

You try to come up with a retort, but shift on your back wrong. Oooh, that still smarts. You sit up, give a glare to Doctor Johnson. You hear someone behind you walking away, but when you glance back all you see is a swinging door.

"I got shot, and-" You feel your back, pat yourself down, "And I have no bandages. Why were you shocking me?" Part of your back feels a little lumpy and weird, but other than that-

"You can thank Subject Elizabeth for that," Doctor Johnson beams.
"Yes," Blake stands from her chair, irritated, "Somehow, Margaret managed to get a hold of her- she was on her way between studies. By the time Doctor Johnson got you in to the lab, she had managed to seal your wounds and removed the bullet at great mental strain," Blake says that last part like it's your fault.
"Complaining the entire time apparently, caused the fibrillation we just corrected," Doctor Johnson says with some amusement, though he lifts a finger, "Valuable practice though- I actually have a proposal for-"
"Doctor Johnson, if you would excuse me and Mr. Lynnel?"

Doctor Johnson blinks, then nods, "Of course, ma'am."

He steps out of the room. Blake turns to you, frowning.

"Lynnel? What happened? And don't try to change the subject this time."
>[ ] "You gave us bad intel. I went in there unarmed!"
>[ ] "What did Margaret tell you?"
>[ ] Fuck it. Tell the whole story. Can't argue at the moment.

"Okay. So, we go to the Thai place- Margaret has a minor conniption over a fly, but I deal with that," You frown, glare at Blake, "You never take these kids out to a park?"
"Lynnel..." She growls.
"Right, probably worried about sunshine messing up their tachyon whoozit whatzits or something. We get to observing where the Starlight were supposed to meet, and I figure we'd try a dry run first."
"Made her try viewing with out formula 6, you mean?"
"Yeah, somehow, just sticking a girl's arm with a syringe in broad daylight seemed a bit unseemly. Anyway, she was doing okay without it, but she started struggling so, I..."
"Gave her half the recommended dose."

You fight down the urge to tell her just what you thought of the recommended dose, before speaking again, "Yeah. You can court martial me for not making her totally high later."

"What happened next?"
"Two people talking, though as I later found out, a third was present. She kept talking about them meeting on a second floor or something...Anyway, apparently one was a priest wearing a collar? And they were talking about moving crystals? Then, the guy who says he's the priest gets shot, then somehow they spotted us."
"You didn't get out of the car or anything, did you?"
"No ma'am. I think they got clued in on the kid's...Psychicness. Or something. Anyway, I wanted to get her out of her trance first, took some doing, then I see this real big, bald, ugly guy coming at us. Looking right at her."
Blake frowns at this, but nods for you to continue.
"Right. Well, apparently, he, uh, he used some kinda mind tricks. I went straight for him, and as it turned out, he wasn't really there, nearly got in a wreck, and then he was some place else, and he started shooting, and then, well, we came rolling in in a wreck outside the garage. I pass out, wake up here. Anything else?"
>>
Emilia Blake seems to consider this. Then shakes her head, "You have the devil's own luck, Mr. Lynnel. Your car wreck smashed the tape recorder- now, thankfully," She seems to spit that 'thankfully' with some spite, "Margaret remembers what she saw, so she'll be able to tell us what she heard. Aside from that, she might not have gotten out of her trance with a full dose that easily."

"How the heck are you supposed to wake her up if she goes under like that then?" Seems like something that should have been mentioned in the manual in your opinion.

"It usually takes two hours. Either that, or intense pain," Emilia Blake says wistfully, "An oversight on our part not to inform you. But it does mean she remembers what she saw there. Doing that kind of surveillance...It makes a very big impression. She feels a lot more strongly," Emilia snorts, shakes her head, a remarkably unprofessional expression on such a professional person, "That was probably the first time she's seen someone killed. She's doing her best to remain professional, but she's shaken up."

Her face freezes again, and she's an ice queen all over again, "Mr. Lynnel, we do have another job for you. It can take some time though. Get over to the Armory, get yourself a gun, then meet me in my office in," she checks her watch, "Two hours. Understood?"

>[ ] "Yes ma'am."

>>
>>25987379
Tyrone is around.

I don't want to step on any toes until after I get a better grip on his character. Until then, Al's gonna be stumbling across the road of devastation, confused men, and love struck women that Tyrone leaves in his sassy wake.
>>
>>25987429

>>
>>25987367
"Whatever you say ma'am," You murmur, swinging your legs off of the table, and wincing a bit at the soreness. You turn your arm a moment. It almost seems a bit sticky, but nothing that will hassle you too much. Emilia nods and walks off, as you grab your shirt from a nearby chair, and button it back up.

You walk out. Roughly speaking, ANTIGONE's base is organized in to three sections- 'Confidential,' it's where you have your mess hall, administrative stuff, and briefing rooms, secret, the labs, the secret files, testing rooms, creepy shiny doctor's rooms, and 'You Better Have a Proper Badge Or A Burning Desire To Meet A Woodchipper And An Anonymous Pig Farm'. That's where the psychics, and other secret things are. Technically speaking from what you've heard, any of ANTIGONE's wonder children cleared for field work can wander any of the three sections on their own will, so long as they don't leave the base without a Handler, basically somebody like you.

So, you had to hope Margaret was still out and about, and not in her quarters. You set off, get walking.

There were more phds here than in MIT, and the effect can be a little intimidating. All those labcoats, with their proud little badges announcing this specialty, or that certification, and please call me doctor such and such, feh. None of them had had to spend their youth in a festering jungle getting shot at.

Probably because they didn't drop out of college. But that doesn't bear dwelling on.

Eventually, you do find her. You catch sight of her in a lab. Big, weird, white room, all tile and chrome, rounded walls. Very big room for such a gawky kid. The door is locked, but just next door was the researcher's room, where you can see doctors murmuring over controls and read outs. She managed to get blood off of her face, but her blouse and jeans are still stained. She seems very tired, but she's tapping her fingers on the chair.

You frown. Didn't seem right to immediately drag a poor girl that had just had two brushes with death in to a room to be poked and prodded.

You give a polite knock to the door as you push in to the little control room that had a very large window between them and Margaret. You were guessing it was a one way mirror.

The anonymous green scrubbed fellows in surgical masks glance up, with some irritation.

"Can I help you?" A strangely accented woman's voice comes up. She steps quickly forward, stopping you from entering in to the room any further. She is rater short though. You glance over her at the banks of machines. Lotta TV screens focused on the girl, bunch of weird print outs, lotta blinking diodes...You didn't know any of this science crap.

"Yeah," You return your gaze to the woman. She cocks an eyebrow under her surgical mask- only one eye focuses on you. Oh. Glass eye. You regain your composure, try not to stare, "I was wondering if I could talk to Margaret, Miss...?"
"Hilga," Wow, someone who is NOT a doctor in this place. You're shocked, "And she is being decontaminated and tested at the moment. We understand she had a traumatic event, so we have to make sure she's level and calm."
"Decontaminated?" You point out the window, "You're having her sit in a chair by herself and stared at like, like, like, well, I'm not going to say, but come on! At least let her change her clothes."

"Ah," Hilga gives a half lidded look, "One of the handlers I see. And not at all as nice as the other one," What other one? "But please do understand that we have put YEARS of work in to them," She glances back at the techies minding the consoles, "Or, at least others at this lab have. We have a process, and it must be followed."

She must be new too.

Hilga frowns behind her mask.

You look up despairingly, "I DID just get shot. She might want to know, I don't know, whether or not I'm alive?"

Hilga glares daggers, but then relents, turns to a man at one of the controls, "Peter?"

"Oh come on Hilga, you getting soft on the grunts?"
"He does have a point," She points at one of the many printers dispensing paper, "See? Her beta level is spiked."
"And you think having him talk will improve this?"
"It couldn't hurt!"
"I think maybe, you fraternizing," The techie puts some emphasis on that, "Outside of your peers has-"
"Whoooaaaa, Jenkins, tone that down," A man over on the right says. Hilga for her part seems to be just a few steps from delivering a beating to Peter Jenkins, "Just step away from the mic, man."

"For fuck's sakes," Peter stands from his chair, glaring down at Hilga, before turning on you, beady eyes behind his glasses, "Fine, meathead. Have at it. But keep it short, will ya? Some of us have to work around here."

You give a look at Peter. What the Hell. He looked like a little twerp, about, maybe, ten years your younger? Little squirt of a kid, maybe 26, fresh out of some kind of ivy league school judging by his accent and arrogance.

Keep it cool. You glare at him, then lean in to the microphone, key it on.

"Uh, hey Margo," As soon as you speak, you see her at the other side of the glass perk up. She stops tapping her nails. Well, so far so good. You're kinda bad at this stuff. You think about making a corny joke, then decide against it. Short and sweet. She hated being treated like a kid after all.

"Al here. Just wanted to let you know, I'm okay," You glance down. That didn't seem right to end on, "You did good out there."

You key off the mic, as Margaret looks down and smiles, "Thank you Mr. Lynnel. That is a sincere relief."

You nod. Well, that's the end of that.

"Happy? Look, see," Peter decides to intrude now, "Her beta level is still fucked. That didn't help at all Hilga."
"Well, it didn't hurt."
"Really?" Peter snorts, "Every mission now, we're going to have some knuckle dragger coming in here, to check on the product. Give an inch, they'll take a mile, though I guess you took more than an inch, Hilga," Peter shakes his head, goes back to his beeping computer, "Bad influence. Bad idea, this whole thing. I don't see why they needed to call in outside help for our work. My girls don't need these neanderthals."

Well, Peter is whining. Hilga seems to be furiously blushing for some reason. And everyone else in the room is trying their best to avoid your gaze. Your objective is complete here.

"You got a problem with me Peter?"

You're not gonna let this go. Peter looks up with irritation, then rips off his surgical mask, "I am WORKING here, don't you have something else to do?"

"I want an answer, Peter. Real man just says it straight up, doesn't just bitch and moan and hope somebody gets it."

This guy reminded you of a man you had to serve under, back when you were still regular army, back at Dak To. Lieutenant, skinny little shit like a weed in his greens, liked to remind people of that when he came walking back in those stuffed pants, those nice sunglasses, and his pins and medals buffed to shit. Walking around, with his swagger stick when the bullets weren't flying, in those moments of calm back at the fire base, as he talked down to men that went on patrols. Didn't give a shit if a man got shot, but he catch you polishing the flagpole, if he caught you not saluting, if your fucking rifle wasn't clean, he'd get this real whiny tone of voice, and he'd do his damndest to act disappointed, like he was doing you a favor sniffing you up and down and trying to get a ladder up your ass. 'Ell Tee,' we called him. Lieutenant thought it was a nickname, decided to take it for himself. Ell Tee was short for little tit, cause he always liked to bitch about his brother. Guessed his momma had mismatched breasts, and Ell Tee had to settle for the little breast while his brother grew big and strong, and ever since he's been whining for that share of momma's milk and hating everybody ever since. A shitty nickname, a shitty joke, a shitty story, but Ell Tee was a shitty person, and 'Nam didn't have the greatest creative minds out in the jungle. You saw Ell Tee die, and found yourself not caring much about it. Guess it was karma to have to find Ell Tee's long lost brother here in your new job.
>>
Peter's staring at you. Damn it, you got lost in thought again. Raises his eyebrows, "Like I was saying? I just don't like to be disturbed in my work. I'm very sorry," He sure wasn't, "That you somehow took offense with what I said. I just don't like it when people who don't know what they're doing come in and try to lecture me on my job, and my job? My job right now is 'Margo,'" He drops his voice a register, really draws out the word, mocking it as if you said 'oogah boogah,' "And right now? You're in the way of my job. You want to bother Margaret, you go talk to Blake. I'm going to go back to fixing what you messed up now, okay?" He looks back to his computers, "Buh bye."

Oh, but this kid was doing his best to get on your nerves.

Peter isn't looking at you. Your knuckles audibly crack as you ball them in to fists, glaring a hole in the back of Peter's head.

"Ms. Hilga?" Hilga is regaining her own composure, and she turns, "Thank you very much for letting me speak with Margaret."
"Not a problem."
Peter snorts, tapping at his console.
"And doc- sorry, you're not a doctor yet, are you? Mister Jenkins?"
"I believe I already said my goodbye," Peter mumbles, clearly agitated at the doctor gibe.
"Let me say mine then," You place a hand on his console, and lean in heavily. Peter looks up, and scootches away a tad. Finally you see eye to eye, and to your satisfaction, you see fear.

"I respect that you have what you call a project over there in the next room," You nod at the window, "I really do. You've spent a lot of time with her, and you must be worried about her. And that's fine. But-" You place a hand on his chair, keeping him from rolling away any further, and drag him directly in to your face, "She's not a project. She's a human being. And so are you, punk. To err is human, brother, but I am far from divine," You push him away, stand up, "Next time we meet, you can that knuckle dragger shit, and I better not hear you refer to her like she's your blue ribbon science project, or I might start showing you what I learned in 'Nam, you hear?"

Peter looks pale, working his mouth like a fish on dry land, but you don't give him a chance to respond. Another nod to the fair, one eyed Hilga, then you walk out the door. Alexander Pope quote. You hope he got that. Had to show you weren't a completely uncultured savage. If nothing else, the glare put some fear in to him.

Okay, writing for spaghetti and meatballs, and rubbing elbows with the lower orders.
>>
You always liked Italian. You pile on some food from the cook, who eyes you warily from behind the sneeze guard. You have no idea why exactly, but he seems relieved when you content yourself with just the one meal.

You pass by Adam- you give him a nod, and Adam nods back. He had been in military intelligence (Yes, yes, oxymoron joke, haha so funny) before he came here. He was a perfect fit for all this cloak and dagger stuff. Maybe that's why he rubbed you wrong.

You pass by him, and a beaming Dr. Johnson, and sit over at the uncool kids table. The waitstaff seem surprised that you're heading over, but scoot to give you room when you sit down.

It was well worth the time. It doesn't take much prodding to find out things about the place- apparently, there had been another HQ for ANTIGONE before they moved in here- a few of the waitstaff had worked at the old base, which was just a run of the corporate front safe house. They had been bumped up in clearance and kept on. A lot of the sub basements dug here were new- apparently whoever ran this didn't like building up very much. There were only three floors up, and yet there were six floors down- which surprised you. You had only been briefed in five. Leroy apparently is the head custodian, and he says not even any of his cleaning crew had managed to get lower than the third sub basement.

Aside from that, apparently there were nine ANTIGONE subjects in all- they all seemed to have different specialties, but one had died in an accident. All the staff at the table agree they like the kids, and try to dote on them whenever possible. Emilia Blake apparently had been a new face- from outside the project. Before hand, everything had to go through Dr. Kasasa, but he was starting to get very sick in his old age, and Ms. Blake was put in to help administrate matters. Dr. Kasasa had not been seen as of late.
>>
Also, Leroy mentions that the lab celebrated birthdays for the kids. All on the same day, April 21st. Cheapskates. Evidently, the cleaning staff don't believe that they all share the same birthday- all the kids are different ages, and look different. "Can't be clones," Leroy concludes, "Those kids got souls. Clones don't got souls." He says it real confident, as if he's met clones before.

After that, talk heads in a more mundane direction- apparently, a fellow Handler Tyrone Alberswazy was making quite a stir. Somehow, you kept missing the guy, but you'd heard him in the briefing. Last night, apparently he got very sociable with a Ms. Hilga- though Leroy claims down on any 'slurs to Ms. Hilga's character,' apparently the base had a more scandalous idea of Ms. Hilga's interaction with Mr. Alberswazy. After that, apparently this morning Alberswazy had gone in the nude to get breakfast. "And always too damn much food," the chef Gomez laments, "I don't understand how he packs it all away and still stays trim." Strange guy.

Then discussion of good restaurants nearby, bars, lamenting the state of baseball, some questions about your field that you dodge (Why do people always ask if you killed somebody in 'Nam? What the fuck did they think you were over there for?), and a promise to let you in on the office betting pool. They seem like honest folks. Not like the usual spookery and eggheads, but you guess somebody has to mop the floors around here.

You check your watch. You've only got about half an hour left. You had to go to the Armory to get your side arm, then get briefed by Blake for whatever this job was. Time flies when you're threatening interns and eating food. Everyone else that you saw earlier is still here, just wrapping up their meals.

Why would we need two pistols? If we're getting something that's not a 1911 or whatever the standard issue sidearm is, it should be a rifle.

"Thanks for talking with me," You genuinely mean that, "See you again some time. Don't let Tyrone eat all your food Gomez."

"I'd have better luck turning back time."

You put your tray back, and walk down to where you get guns. It doesn't take long to find thankfully, there's nice little stripes that point you where to go.

It doesn't take long before you reach it. It has a firing range too. Nice.

"Hey, you must be Lynnel," A large man with a beard comes ambling over from your left, from a nice, heavily barred room. He proffers a hand more suited for a bear to you, "Name's Gregor Walsh. Youngest of the Walshs."

You gingerly shake his hand. He seems be a bit ginger when he walks to you.

"I'm Alfred Lynnel, but you already know that. Call me Al," Something about Gregor makes you like him. Probably the prospect of him giving you a firearm, "I'm here to get a gun. Really wasn't happy being caught out in the field without one."

"I heard, understandable," Gregor frowns, "Supposed to be standard issue, but the lab rats get pretty nervous about guns around the kids- I say, that's all the more reason to get a gun, damn it!" He waves his hand, "But, ah, you probably already get that. Anyway," He waves you over to the counter, and goes in a room with a considerable amount of firepower, "The standard issue is an FN Browning Hi-Power but-"

"I was actually thinking of -"
"1911 Colt, I knew you'd say that," Gregor chuckles, placing a nice, shiny .45 on the lip of the window, "You probably have one in your personal possessions, but I figured I'd play it safe and give you a clean one."

"Thanks Gregor, but, I was also thinking of playing it real safe, and getting another gun," You say, possessively dragging the colt over to your side.
Gregor scowls, "Better not be a fucking .44 Magnum. Dirty Harry comes out, and every last son of a bitch wants one of those things."
"...Do you have one?"
Gregor grits his teeth, "Yes."

It'd make sense to be versatile. The .45's ammo capacity is too much of a hindrance.

>>25989659
You make a good point.

For a rifle either an M-16 since we're used to it or a FN FAL because I love them. And the Ithaca is a solid shotgun. We won't always be carrying all of this, but keeping it in the trunk is good. We got caught unarmed once, it won't happen again.

>>25989666

Okay, so, a CZ75B. I've got at least one anecdote of one showing up in the US before the Cold War's end, so I'm going to say Mr. Walsh is a man with an eye for guns.

Now, the other gun, I'm going to try to shorten this down a bit, and boil it down somewhat.

M16. Specifically, the M16A1, although we'll probably call it a XM177E2 if we were MACV-SOG, which would make sense given that we've ended up in a super secret project.
>>

>>
>>25989946
Well now we Have to take her to the gun range - it's better that she finds out what a gunshot sounds like somewhere safe rather than out and about when we're trying to protect her.

In other words, it won't help if she collapses and curls up when we're trying to get her away from danger, whereas if she learns to at least tolerate guns then she will be more likely to be able to function in a firefight (and by function I mean 'able to run away and take cover').
>>
>>25989992
yeah, its a good idea, as long as we prepare her for it, eye & ear protection and teach her the 4 rules, also, make sure we're the only one shooting before taking her on range

"Well, actually," You lift the 1911. That is a fine weight. But not what you need right now, "Three things. First, Dirty Harry?" You give Gregor a hard look, "C'mon man. What do you take me for? I'm not an idiot."
"You'd be surprised at the sorts of things people ask me," Gregor replies with a chuckle.
"Second, I think the .45 stays in the cage this time around," You set down the pistol and slide it over, almost feeling bad. Gregor looks shocked, "And I was wondering if you happen to have one of those wonder nines. That, that Czech one, the fuck is it-"
"A CZ75?" Walsh is full on mind boggled now.
"Yeah! That's the one!"
"How the fuck did you find out about that one?" Walsh wanders further back in his cave, and then comes back with a pristine looking beauty, and four magazines, "I only have, like, three of these. Haven't even told anybody about them."
"Heh, well, I have friends in places high and low," You smile, gingerly taking it. All steel and malice, a little squat thing of beauty. Fit well in the hand. Short gun too, "One of them practically creamed himself writing about this to me."
"Well, you can tell me how it is then. And the third thing?"
"I'm gonna need a rifle, one that can go full auto. Think you might have heard of one, called an M16?"
"Are you nuts? What the Hell do you want an-"
"Gregor," You set the gun back down, and raise your hands, "Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Margaret and I nearly got killed out there because I wasn't packing a gun. Can you blame me for wanting to take precautions?"
"This isn't the jungle, damn it, and you're not in the army!"
"I got a bullet wound in me Gregor, seems pretty familiar to me," You lean forward, "Just. For. Emergencies. I hope it'll just gather dust in the trunk same as in your armory, but I'd rather it be close at hand if shit goes south again."

Gregor chews on his beard, thinking. Eventually, he shakes his head, "Fine. You're the professional. It'll be in your trunk." Good.

"And make sure it's an A1!" You shout behind you, checking your watch. Not much time left.
"What the fuck do you take me for?" You chuckle. Well, at least Gregor knew that much, even if he was a bit shy to let the good bits slip out.

You walk away from Gregor, hoping you didn't push him too much. Still, you got a nice, fancy pistol in your shoulder holster under your jacket now, and three magazines in your belt. Nothing helps a man's mood like superior firepower.

You make your way to Blake's office, in a considerably improved mood. Blake is standing when you come in by a window looking to the street, reading some kind of paper, still in her dress suit. You somehow suspect that she can't sleep except on a bed of red ink. She glances up, looks to your gun, and frowns. You sincerely hope she isn't about to bitch about it being non standard, but she doesn't bring up, instead walking to the other side of her desk, and waving for you to sit in a chair opposite of you.

"Thank you for coming, Mr. Lynnel."
Not like you had a choice.
"Always happy to serve my country ma'am. Now, what's this job you were talking about?"

Blake leans back in her chair, arches her fingers, and narrows her icy blue eyes in consideration of you.
"There is a man that is going to be performing a drop off in Rock Creek Park. I want you to intercept that package, before someone else does."
"I take it this man isn't one of ours then?"
"No. Man from East Germany. We suspect he's Stasi, but we can't be sure."
"Not Starlight then?" You feel disappointed.
"Not this time, Agent Lynnel. We're...Thinking of how to handle this situation."
"So," You look around in vain for something to drink, but regrettably, Blake preferred a spartan office, "Uncle Sam isn't the only one with psychic tinker toys then?"
"Focus. This should be an easy job," You snort, "And you have a day to prepare. I want you to take on of our assets with you."
"What, you mean the girls?"
Blake rolls her eyes. She hates that.

do we get to choose? because if so, bring Margo with us
>>
"Yes, I mean one of ANTIGONE's products."
"They're people, y'know, you can't just-"
"Lynnel?" God, you swear the room dropped two degrees of temperature, the way she said that. You shut up, "As I was saying, we need to test them in the field, get a chance to see how they do outside of laboratory conditions. I'll give you their folders, you decide."
"Don't worry, I already know who I-"

"I would advise against taking Margaret," Blake is flipping through her folder again, sorting pages, "She still needs time to recuperate."
"I was thinking I would work with her again? See, she saved my ass back there, if it wasn't for her-"
"She saw a man die, graphically, for the first time in her life, unfiltered by her mortal perceptions, Mr. Lynnel, and you really want to take her out again? She'll be scared witless!"
"She's not made of glass."
"No, but she's young. If you truly wish..." Blake leaves that last part unsaid, but passes over the folder, "Just remember the purpose of this project, hm? You're supposed to be testing them, not bonding with them."

"Look, I can evaluate if Margo," A raised eyebrow, "Margaret is good to go out or not. You said I have a day to prepare, right? Lemme look over the folders and talk to Margaret first, alright?"

Ms. Blake taps her finger on her desk, considering the matter, before nodding, "Very well, that is your right. Go ahead and take those with you, but please remember they're classified?"

"Whatever you say."

"Elizabeth. Biokinetic. 13 years old. Elizabeth has displayed from an early age an ability to manipulate the human body- though regrettably, this was only noticed late in development at 13, and was misdiagnosed repeatedly for other disciplines. As of such, she is inadequately trained medically- she can stimulate and direct cell growth, but in at least one instance, has caused lasting nerve damage in an attempt to help. Ability fatigues Elizabeth to great degree. Formula 6 offsets fatigue. Seems to be, if not actively ostracized, disliked by the rest of ANTIGONE's products. Has reacted with, to quote one handler, "Narcissism unseen since Nero." Very self confident, which can further complicate her desire to treat injuries in an attempt to impress. Has however saved more lives, see incident refs: 5/12/78, 5/13/78, 11/2/80."

Might save your life or paralyze you. You feel your back. That explains why you didn't bleed out.

"Mckenzie. Telekinetic. 15 years old. Mckenzie has telekinetic abilities, showing an ability to influence objects in vision at a range of six meters with up to 20 pounds of force without formula 6 dose. Laboratory testing of formula 6 proved negative. Do not under any circumstances treat with formula 6. Subject shows an antipathy to formula 6. Subject linked with incident PERSEUS. Subject has proven herself very patriotic, reliable, and a strong leader. Has trouble taking orders. Seems to have a severe fear of dogs. In stressful situations, gains strength."

Great. A girl that can hit you with twenty pounds of force that doesn't like to take orders.
>>
"Carol. Photokinesis. Shows an affinity for affecting light. Dislikes daylight immensely. Painfully shy, non sociable. Mostly uses ability to go invisible, however during incident PERSEUS, demonstrated ability to blind. Possible application in further focusing light? Believed to be lesser discipline of telekinesis. Formula 6 has remarkable effect, permitting passive effect of invisibility- advise to have some other method of detecting her on hand if treated with formula 6. When under influence of formula 6, gets aggressive, domineering. Does not seem to be primary personality however- afterwards expresses regrets for action. Does not display memory loss like other subjects on dosage of formula 6. Further testing required."

And a recluse that can go invisible when on drugs.

Real bunch of winners.

Margaret is easy enough to find. She's a tall girl, probably about 5'7", she'd be taller if she stood up straight, and there aren't many places in the base. You get the feeling she doesn't want to sleep. Definitely not the firing range, not in the mess hall, ah. Living up to the cliche. You spot her through the door in your wanderings. She's in the lab's library, reading what seems to be a newspaper. Upon walking in, a librarian raises her hand, severe dark haired woman. She leans in, whispers, "She asked to be left alone."

You wave away the librarian, ignore her protests, and walk for the table.

You notice it's last week's paper. That, and entire chunks have been cut out. Suppose they have to keep things a bit on the down low. Margo glances up, strange eyes behind her thick rimmed glasses, and nods to you.

Well, there's a start.

"Mr. Lynnel," She says. Then breaks into a half smile, "Glad you're alive. Elizabeth won't ever let me hear the end of it," She frowns then, glances to her left, sighs, "And, judging by the sound of it, she's telling everyone else a grossly exaggerated version of the story. Egh," She shakes her head, "I know I should go back and sleep, but I just don't want to be anywhere near...THAT."

You check your watch. It is indeed 9:30PM. Though that might not be the only reason that she doesn't want to sleep.

"So," She folds her newspaper, slides it to the side, and knits her fingers together, "What can I do for you, Agent Lynnel?"

"Margo, c'mon, it's Al. You don't have to call me Agent Lynnel."

Margo cocks an eyebrow at you, "Agent Lynnel sounds better, but...If you insist, Al it is."

She smiles a bit when she says that.

You scratch the back of your hand. Well, hopefully she'll stick with the Al thing. The kid seems okay. But, it almost seems a bit forced. Fuck it, take the plunge. Just ask.

"Look, do you need to talk?" She looks surprised as she looks up at you, "I know more about the sort of thing you're going through than most anyone else here. C'mon, we can go back to the mess and see what Tyrone hasn't eaten."

Well. You were being honest. But, apparently something sets her off when you say that. She narrows her eyes.

"No, no I don't think you know about the sort of thing I'm going through, Al."

Points for her calling you Al.

"Sure I do! I've seen shit," You wave a hand outside of the library, "I, I mean, fuck. Even you have to know about 'Nam."
"I know, but," Margaret looks away, shakes her head, "You gave me a half dose."
"Yes. And that was a good thing!" Even Blake said so.
"You were supposed to give me a full dose, Al!" She realizes she's shouting all of a sudden, and stops, sits down, does that annoying mumbly thing again, before she speaks again, "I wasn't supposed to remember. I'm not supposed to remember."
"Well, it's a good thing you remembered, because we don't have a tape. Now you can tell us what you saw."
"I don't just SEE, when I do...What I do," She's hissing through her teeth now, "I. I get every sense. Including, including an emotional sense," She puts a hand up to her mouth, "He was so scared. And the other one, the other one, he..."

She looks to be on the edge of something. She puts a hand up to her mouth, shuts her eyes. "No. No, I can't."

Somehow, pushing the issue doesn't seem like a good idea.

His rough but if he's supposed to more about these things he's not going to push. Usually you go out drinking and fellow soldiers let it out. He's going to have to change up his tactics a bit. He may have dropped out of college but he's not stupid.

"Margo, you should talk about it, I've seen what happens when people try to forcibly forget what they've been through, it doesn't go away, it just eats at you from the inside.

I'm not going to push you right now or force you to tell me, but if you ever want to talk with someone who knows what it's like to be unable to forget stuff I'm here."

This, this isn't really something that you're used to.

You've seen green guys, seen what happened to them in the jungle. It hits people, there's a transition you gotta make. Fuck if you knew what to say though. Margaret seemed to be getting really sick, and lost in her head, and you knew for a fact that that was the last thing to let happen to you. First time you killed a man, you felt nothing. Nothing but the old joke, 'recoil.' But then you went back to your bunk, laughed with the guys as you talked about it, marked it on your helmet (God that was stupid. Never made another mark after that), and then you stared up at the ceiling and wondered if you should feel something. That ate at you.

"Look, Margo. I'm pretty sure, down in the jungle, I felt that fear myself-" Margo opens her mouth, but you bring your hands up together in a silent prayer for patience, "-But if you don't want to talk about it, that's fine. You SHOULD talk about it though. I've seen what happens when people just try to forget what they've seen, what they've done, or haven't done. It doesn't go away. It eats you inside out. But you gotta want to talk about it. I'm not going to try to draw it out of you, because you have to want to say it. Listen, the most important thing though, is I'm gonna be right here, ready to listen," You do your best to smile. Look friendly. Margaret is looking down, playing with her hands, compulsively wiping them. Fuck if you know what you're doing, but you forge on, "Though, talking or no, you gotta sleep. Come on, let's get some hot chocolate and get you tucked in."

She rolls her eyes at that, "I'm not a kid," her familiar refrain, but she doesn't object as you go to the cafeteria. Gomez is working there, smiles, gets the cocoa.

As you drink it, you figure you could ask a question or two before she sleeps. Probably not about the murder, but maybe some other things.

"Soooo," You slurp at your cocoa, "I've only really worked with you so far. How are the others?"
She looks over her mug, and cocks an eyebrow, "Others?"
"Y'know. The fellow members of ANTIGONE."
"Oh, right, well," Margaret frowns, "I dunno. There's ten, well, nine now in total. We've had a few of us graduate. You'd have to be a bit more specific," She slurps on her cocoa, frowns, looks inside, "Dang. I was hoping for a marshmallow."

"Well, okay, how about, Elizabeth. She fixed me, right?"
"Yeah," Margo gives a sour look at that, "And she'll never let me live that down. She's got a way of really digging under your skin. She always has to prove that she's the best, no matter what. Still, I owe her," Margaret admits this in the same way a man admits he needs a root canal.
"Alright. How about Mckenzie?"
"Oh, she's alright. She has a stubborn streak a mile wide, but she's really quite nice. One time, I, ah, well, kinda snuck out. They spotted the breach, but they didn't know which of us did it. As soon as Dr. Johnson walked in to the dorm, Mckenzie strode right up, announced that she had done it, and would do it again a thousand times over," She smiles, "She can be histrionic, but she's a good friend."
"Hm. And Carol?"
"Carol," She looks sad then, shakes her head, "I don't know her enough. She...Well, she likes to be apart. She's nice, but I feel like I do a disservice to her, not getting closer to her."

A frown appears, "These are all untested members. They're at the top of the charts for field work in waiting. What's this about?"
"Well," Be blunt. Be straightforward. God, it's a job, it's not like you're telling her she doesn't get to go on a field trip, "Blake wants me to go out again, and she wants me to pick one you gals to come along. Those were the three on the list given to me."
"I wasn't on the list, was I?" Margo gives a smile that doesn't reach her eyes, "I don't have to be a clairvoyant to guess that."
"Yeah, Blake says she thinks you need some R&R."
>>
Margaret nods, "If Ms. Blake thinks that, she's probably right."

Not quite a no.

"Thank you for the hot chocolate Agent Lynnel-"
"Al."
"Right, Al, sorry. Anyway, thank you for hosting me, and thank you for visiting me. I have to go to my personal Hell now. Elizabeth will probably have already sowed quite an explicit tale for the rest of the girls," She stands from the table, attempting to look graceful, which really is not possible for such an awkward girl, "I must defend my honor, sirrah. Have a good evening."

"You too, Margo."

She gives a gangly bow, and then trots back off to the deeper recesses of ANTIGONE base.

You sincerely hope she doesn't have nightmares. You know how awful that is. Speaking of, time to face your nightmares. You contemplate the folder, take it with you. You can decide in the morning.

For now, you must sleep.

>8:00AM. I should just stay awake throughout the whole day, haha that's silly. I'm going to bed guys. Thanks for paying attention. I gotta find a way to run this quest without fucking my sleep schedule. Night.

Eh, maybe if the character was Adam Compton.

I get the feeling that Alfred is a lot less clean. A bit more Harrison Ford.
