You are Ssen, a Lamia raised by a human Paladin who adopted you after killing the ones who birthed you. You are grown now, and Father has passed on. After a great deal of work, you have become a Paladin like your Father, and now take up his duties.

You are accompanied by your best friend from childhood, the insect druid Tricia; Mage, a magic user who ran away from his family of cannibal raiders known as the Ghouls (Yes, his name is Mage. It was his idea); Persephone, a 22-year old thief/ex-guerllia fighter (She goes by Peri), and Mari, a 13-year old prodigy scholar/now sniper, who has her mind and soul trapped within Peri's body; and Lea, a deeply religious musician/martial artist, trained by her father, a famous trainer for arena fighters, she's covered from her mouth down in bandages to hide the horrific state her body has become thanks to the 'cures' that saved her from cancer.

Your journey continues...

>>
Ah! The saturday afternoon begins!
>>
Your return to Stone Hall was quite fruitful. Ambrose Trapp, self-appointed archivist of the Caligo Clarus, discovered that the 'First Lantern' used by the first Lightbringer was a collection of mirrors made out of the metal that you collected from Old One. They were inscribed with runic circles and arranged in a large circle with one in the center. This formed something called the Grand Seal, and was powerful enough to subdue the Dragon Who Was Of Shadow. Of course, you have no idea what the runic circles are, what activates them, if there are other conditions required, and the metal to make the mirrors is still corrupted. But it's a start.

Your visit to Granny was also productive. With the use of some slightly altered blood moss, she unlocked your feral side. It was a bit more intense than either of you expected it to be. Twitch muscles that react faster than the eye can comprehend; fingernails now replaced with claws; two new poisons, a Black paralytic, and an acidic Clear, which combined form a noxious gas; and barbs within your tail. Granny had to unleash her own feral self, just to keep up with the monster that you had become. Still, the exercise was a success, as now you can access you claws, and the other two poisons, while still being you.

Your travel back up to Bronze Peak has been mercifully quiet. While asleep, you were visited by the Fifth Humor, who told you what he was. He was the original 'spirit' that had inhabited the land. Forced into his current form, and sentience, by a cabal of sorcerer-kings who wanted to end the amorality of nature, and replace it with a God of their own choosing and creation. That was how the being known as the Dragon Who Was Of Shadow was created. He also showed you the second thing that was mucking up the land, the presence of the Array.
>>
A device made of magic, created by the First Lightbringer in an attempt to stop his defeat at the hands of the horde led by the first of the Newgates. The Array is Destiny given form, and it allows one to see the future, past, and present with perfect accuracy. Unfortunately, the way the Array communicates is nearly incomprehensible, and its existence is what is making Citadel so strong, and keeping the land it is current stasis. The Fifth presumes that it's another trick by the being you know as Peace.

Apparently Citadel was intended to be a mass sacrifice ritual, to revive and strengthen the Dragon Who Was Of Shadow. However, Peace betrayed the Dragon, killed the other Children of the Dragon, and has allowed Citadel to grow, continuing to manufacture and sacrifice Lightbringers to it. The Fifth has no idea why.

Thankfully, your actions have been upsetting the status quo, and the idea of 'destiny,' enough that the Array is starting to break down. When it does, Citadel will be vulnerable to the Grand Seal, and you can cast it out from the land. The Fifth offered a deal, allow him to return to his place, and restore the emotionless, amoral, uncaring, rule of pure nature; and in return he would give you the time you need to keep Citadel's inevitable collapse from becoming a mass slaughter.

The cost however, was that the majority of other monsters would remain feral beasts, magic would be more uncontrollable, and despite the new Lord of the Earth having no malevolence towards people, and not be actively holding them in place...it's still replacing one master with another. You turned him down, and he politely accepted your decision.
>>
Since last we left off, if I remember correctly, we were asleep, I will suggest a new part of our morning routine:

After a stretch, some quicks around the cart. Our fastmuscles were real sore, after all. They need to work out. Shouldn't jump right into fighting dudes with 'em.
>>
>>24493763

Seconded. I gleefully imagine the expression on Peace's face the next time she tries to time-stop.

not actually that satisfying.
>>
>>24493822

Well, behind the mask.

Also, I'm planning to do some art of the Dramatae. Echo, what color and design do their robes have again?
>>
You wake up and do your usual stretch, and then practice your other muscles. They're stiff and sore, but it still feels good, strange but good. You are starving though, and you have to remind yourself that you, at the very least, should eat your morning hunk of venison with a knife, and not just wolf the whole thing down.

"I was wondering." Mage says as he works his way through an apple. "Say we do manage to get the harpies, and the lamias, and the nagas, and all the other monsters to some equal level of what we call civilization. Is that sustainable? I mean, you're a carnivore, Ssen. Doesn't that mean that, by necessity, that there couldn't be a 'lamia city.' Lizard People can feed off of mushrooms, and lichens, and stuff. That's why the Undercity works, but I don't know how'd a village of lamias would be able to sustain themselves for very long."
>>
>>24494071
"Animal husbandry is a thing, Mage."
>>
>>24493763

After the first few laps are done, perhaps Ssen should attempt to try doing some twitch maneuvers with the armor? It might not be as fast as being unarmored, but a speed boost is a speed boost.

I wonder if Quentin could create a suit of armor that's flexible and relatively lightweight, yet as strong or stronger than Ssen's current set (which I'm assuming is platemail or some variation thereof).
>>
>>24493935
Simple dark blue robes, gold trim, Normally they have hoods up. But if you want them down, Tragedy has short grey hair and wears gloves; Comedy wears no gloves and is an elf with longer strawberry-blonde hair; Rage (was) human, a little taller than the others, and wore a Medallion; and Peace is always hooded.
>>
>>24494071
"That's a very good question mage. Especially since apparently I just keep growing. Hopefully we can figure out some solution involving clever herding of cattle and pigs or something, but with the hard times ahead, that's overly optimistic. We might be able to swing a small population of carnivores per city, like we're doing with harpies in bronze peak. You're probably right about 'lamia cities', though.
>>
>>24494071

There might be some types of plants that could substitute for meat. Or if the demand for meat is too high, perhaps Lamias wouldn't live in cities per se, just in small communities within the other cities, and just have an annual meeting or something.
>>
>>24494138

Thanks. I'm probably going to keep them all hooded, though, to up the creepy factor.

>>24494183

Ever heard of the seven essential amino acids? Those are the ones you can only get from animal meat.
>>
>>24494219
I wonder... what about blood moss? It smelled delicious. Is there a kind that doesn't incite bestial rage?
>>
>>24494234
Presumably. That lot had some special ritual done to it by the Cimmeri.
But maybe without the ritual it doesn't smell delicious and it's just red moss. We'll have to try and find some.
>>
>>24494219

You can get the other amino acids from animal products fairly easily, if I remember correctly. But a vegan who doesn't eat animal products will have a tough time getting those required amino acids without doing some research first.
>>
>>24494288
>>24494234

Point. Blood moss might work, but we'd have to ask Granny or check a library.

Eggs, maybe. And hey, lamias are snake-girls.
>>
>>24494165
>>24494234
>>24494279

"That's a very good question Mage. Especially since apparently I just keep growing. We might be able to swing a small population of carnivores per city, like we're doing with harpies in bronze peak. You're probably right about 'lamia cities', though." You say. "Although animal husbandry is a thing, Mage."

"Well, the growth thing is going to slow down." Tricia says. "I mean, we're all still changing, in one form or another. Mage's magic, Peri/Mari's brain, and...stuff."

"I know, I know." Mage says waving his hands. "You told me, another thing for the 'to do' book."

"If we're really lucky, there might be some crop out there that works for me and is easy to grow. Anyone know what the heck Blood Moss is? It was pretty good. And there's always eggs." You ask idly as the wagons get moving again.

"Blood Moss? Hmm, well the short answer is that it could possibly work." Mari says. "Longer answer is that Blood Moss does have nearly the same properties as meat, but not quite. You could live off of it, but people who live off of it wouldn't be the best for a heavily active lifestyle like ours. Also, it's got very specific requirements to grow properly. One of them is necrotized flesh."

"So they need plants to feed the animals, to feed the plant." Peri says.

"Well, to start the fungal colony at least, once it gets going, then it can be cultivated." Mari says. "The Purple Sands Conclave grows a clump of it. White Tree would get samples all the time."

"Okay," Mage says. "I know I wouldn't mind, but you think that you could have a whole village with the staple food being just fungus?"

"Undercity does it." Lea says.

"Undercity's been doing it for ages." Mage says. "They're used to it, I'm talking about shifting a species that's been eating meat for years upon years...to mold." He looks at you. "Think you could?"
>>
>>24494441
well, you CAN bulge the muscle and strengthen the bone. Perhaps it could be made permanent and reproducable. It might passively drain magic from the atmosphere with each generation though.

I think I could, as long as it tasted good. But I'm kinda the exception to the rule right now, aren't I? The Lizardmen seem like they've been civilized for a long time, whereas nobody's even sure how Lamia society works or if it even exists.

"Speaking of that plenty of food thing," ISen says walking up. "We may have a problem...well...two problems."

"What?"

"Well, I'll be officially appointing rulers without Citadel's permission. That, on top of stopping the tithes, and the Lizard People thing...I can only get away with so much. We're getting a little close to causing the High Council, or the Open Council, or my Dad, to react."

"What would they do?" Tricia asks.

"Probably tell me to back off, start up the tithes again, or at least let them 'approve' of the people I set up to be in charge." Isen says shrugging. "Also they'd want the Princess back, I guess."

"And when you say no to those things?" Lea asks.

"That brings me to the second problem. The Leviathan...the ship, not Ssen's grandpa." He sighs. "That thing reduced Coral Gate to rubble when it rebelled in the Sixth Age. It's right there in the bay. One messenger bird and WHUMP...we'll get shelled to the Myriad Darkness in an instant."

"Ugh, that could be a problem." Peri says. "Ssen, got some bad ideas for that?"
>>
>>24494730

Wait, what? What's the Leviathan?

Also, storm it. What could possibly go wrong.
>>
>>24494730
"We could always write a letter about this to the high council, let them have their say. No idea about how to solve the leviathan itself- I mean, we could have people swim under and cut holes, but that's an old trick. They've probably solved that one by now/"
>>

"Take the ship over?

"Hey, you asked for a bad idea."
>>
>>24494730
Its in Citadel Bay? If it does move out, lizardman undersea ambush with harpy support might capture us the ship. Possibly. Maybe.
>>
>>24494864

This could just be the thing that gets us the support of the Harpies.
>>
>>24494813

>>24494914
well, I DID suggest we write a letter.
>>
>>24494730

Is the High Council the type to uphold tradition and such above all else? Or could they be swayed by promises of immense riches generated from the mines of Bronze Peaks, as opposed to the economic mess that it is right now?

Aren't there some laws that allow for deputizing people to positions of power in times of crisis? Would that angle work?
>>

>>
>>24495001

>>
>>24494800
>Wait, what? What's the Leviathan?
It's the ship that Paladin Odette used to shell you during the retaking.

>Is it in Citadel Bay?
It's in Stone Hall's bay.

>>24495011
>Is this a House of Lords and House of Commons kind of thing?
Yes, the High Council are the direct advisors to the King, there's three humans, one elf, one dwarf. The Open Council is led by the HIgh Council and handles more local village-to-village matters.

>>24494808

"We could always write a letter about this to the high council, let them have their say. No idea about how to solve the Leviathan itself- I mean, we could have people swim under and cut holes, but that's an old trick. They've probably solved that one by now."

"Maybe." Isen says.

"Or we could just take the ship over." You say with a shrug.

Everyone looks at you.

"Hey, you asked for a bad idea." You say.

The great doors of Bronze Peak come into view...as well as the shouts and yelling. It looks like there's a riot about five steps away from breaking out.

There's a mass of Red Occuli, and they're keeping people from leaving.

"Your Ladyship." One of the coldiers comes up to you and salutes. "We have a situation here. These people are trying to leave Bronze Peak. They packed up everything and are taking off."

"Where?" Lea asks.

"They say they're going to White Tree or Grand Citadel." The soldier says.

"Then we're well done with them." Lea says. "Send them off."

"The issue is, ma'am, that they are leaving with considerable debts to pay to Mr. Sandover." He sighs. "And Paladin Balles says that anyone is free to leave...provided they do so, having paid up their account." He sighs. "We suspect a few of them just hiding things and being unable to pay, but some of the others..." He shakes his head.

You look. It does seem that a good deal of the people that the Occuli are detaining do look like people who took loans from Jeremy, to pay off other loans.

"There's talk about exceptions, but you know Paladin Balles' policy on exceptions." He sighs. "We need your help, or it's going to get ugly."

>>
>>24495110

Let's be nice here. Shall we another paladin speech?
>>
Well we talk to the Paladin currently in charge of Bronze Peak and he helps us all draw up a letter to the King.
It should cover details about the economic collapse of both Bronze Peak and Stone Hall and that efforts are underway to remedy the situation.
Ask for the King to send representatives on a fact finding mission to determine the extent of the situation and how long it should affect tithes and if it is necessary to send additional help in restructuring.
Until that time Isen has offered his assistance and is doing his best to help stabilize matters.
>>
>>24495071
Welp. Time issue an order.

"They can leave once they pay off their loans, not before.

"Should they continue to refuse to pay, put them in jail.

"It's simple at that point. Pay and leave freely or be put in jail and work off your loan, how ever long that would take."
>>
>>24495128
There's also the guy that does the Citadel pictures.
>>
>>24495110
That's...actually not that crazy of an idea. Officially, they're merchants.

"Alright, everybody. Apparently you'd like to leave this fine city, and go live in Citadel or White Tree. Which is all well and good, but naturally we can't have folks running up debt and then leaving them behind; what kind of message would that send to the folks staying here and paying? Anyone leaving is not absolved of debt. If you leave, we'll be delegating the collection of that debt to the fine...merchants...of the Coins. Of course, that won't be necessary if you stay here for at least long enough to pay it off."
>>
>>24495071

"Send for someone with Coins." You say to the Occuli.

"Right away, your Ladyship." The Occuli says, sagging with relief.

You knock on the princess' carriage door. She opens it and you explain the scenario.

"If you wish to be compassionate...then I suppose you could just cut off a finger of every person who wishes to flee their responsibility." She shrugs. "Personally, I would just kill every tenth person there, and then start the proper executions until they all pay up or offer themselves in indentured servitude."

"Really helpful." Tricia says, listening in.

After a few minutes the Occuli comes back with a member of Coins, and his two assistants. They're faces you recognize.

"YOU?!" Peri snaps.

"I have my Guild medal, right here." Robin says. "Same with Ryan and Jessi." He says. "Although please, call us Daniel, Dave, and Daisy right now."

Ryan's wearing a cloak with a forest camo patter, and has a headband that says something in elvish across it. He raises his fist in solidarity. "Love your work here. Fight the power from within! Use the proletariat's own weapon of money and excess against them! Viva revolution! Also, it's good to see you all again."

Jessi rolls her mascara covered eyes.

"So!" Robin Goodfellow says. "These are the deadbeats, huh? They've already made appeals to the Coins. They aren't floating any more loans. They don't want Jeremy to be the competition. They don't want ANY competition, really. So, if your plan is for me to give them money, that's not going to happen."
>>
>>24495535
"No, my plan, if you can call it that, was more for them to give you money, and you to give most of it to those they owe. But more that I wanted to threaten them with that if they leave. Mostly I'd like to stall them until we can turn this city around.

Unless you have another bright idea?"
>>
>>24495606
"And what do you mean about competition, exactly? I'd hope that Jeremy was working *with* Coins, not against them. Do I need to have Rachel yell at him again?"
>>
>>24495535
"I was mostly going to threaten them with the fact that the Bank, or Jeremy in this case, would sale their loans to you, the Coin Guild, and well you would collect these how you see fit. Just looking to buy some time really with this to get Bronze Peak turned around."
>>
>>24495637
Jeremy started a bank.
Coins lends money.
Competition. Free market. All that jazz.
>>
>>24495535
"The idea was to give the debt of anyone who leaves over from sandover to the coins. The coins would collect, claim a pre-agreed percentage, and forward the rest to sandover using their normal methods. You're telling me they wouldn't be interested in a deal like this?"
>>

>>

It's doubtful that Coins is one big cohesive entity; they almost certainly have members running more than one moneylender. So I'd hope that Jeremy would play nice rather than pitting himself against *all* the Coins lenders together.

"No." He nods. "That's as good a plan as any."

My other plan was to give the debt of anyone who leaves over from Sandover to the Coins. The Coins would collect, claim a pre-agreed percentage, and forward the rest to Sandover using their normal methods. You're telling me they wouldn't be interested in a deal like this?"

Robin blinks and thinks for a bit. "That...might work." He says. "I know that the Guildmaster here would be okay with it, but as for Coins Grandmaster." He shrugs. "You should have seen the letter that we got from Citadel. They are not happy with any of this."

"Apparently this economic disaster is Jeremy's fault, and the Grandmaster wants us to pressure the Paladins into arresting him." Jessi says. "They said that 'even if there is no obvious evidence of malfeasance, you should ensure that the Paladins discover Sandover's wrong doing.' Which means that they want us to..."

"Set him up." Ryan says. "Thankfully Robin gets all of the Guildmaster's mail as the Guildmaster's chief secretary here."

"Emergency chief secretary." Jessi says. "The other one's at home with a bad case of food poisoning. Nothing fatal, but she'll need to be in fed for a week or so."

Isen sighs. "But we can force this through on a local level?"

"Yeah, until Citadel hears about it, and then there will be storms a plenty." Robin says.

"Well, hopefully we'll have stabilized the place by then." Isen says. "Ssen...I have no idea as to what to do."
>>

"That's how things normally are with the Dawnchasers. Don't worry about it."
>>
>>24495867
"Welcome to Ssen world, Isen. Population very confused. We have a few options here. We could force it through on a local level and stabilize it, which would be against the command of the guildmaster. If the guildmaster is reasonable, he'll stop being so angry at sandover once the returns from the deal start coming in. If not, well, we could always try to levy the claim of malfinance against him and investigate now, without planting any evidence. It would discredit investigations in the future."
>>
>>24495867
"Well, in the short term, this city is going to fall apart if we don't get the help we need from the harpies. As for the pressure from the Grandmaster, I'd say this city would have fallen apart long ago if not for Jeremy propping it up, for good or ill; would he rather *that* have happened? Long-term, I doubt Jeremy wants to be a banker and accountant for the rest of his life, and I *know* that Quentin doesn't. Perhaps we could arrange for the sale of the majority of the loans over to Coins once things calm down and the immediate disaster is averted; that might smooth things over and arrange for a peaceful transition. But for anything like that to happen, we need Jeremy around in the short term or everything will fall apart."
>>
>>24495941
That's an interesting idea. With Mumei investigating, and Paladin Balles certifying thta everything is in order to his high standards, the investigation would be completely above reproach unless Citadel wants to declare outright war on the leadership of the city. Which we'll deal with separately.

"Oh, and Ryan its bourgeoisie, not proletariat. The proletariat are the people you're fighting for."

"Oh. Huh." Ryan says. "Booge-wah-zee...right...uhh, how do you spell that?"

Jessi shakes her head. "Ignore him." She thumbs through a satchel of parchment that she keeps at her side as her guise as 'Daniel's' personal assistant. She takes out a few scrolls. "If you like I can modify these bills of sale, and then they can just sign them and Coins will take the loans."

Robin nods. "Nothing makes a Coins man shut up faster than money." He smiles. "Even the Guildmaster wont complain if this gets us enough cash to shove a big fat bribe in his face."

"Further proof of the worthlessness of the Citadel governing class. The Fey would NEVER have such savagery."

"Ryan, the Fey didn't HAVE economic problems because we did HAVE an economy!" Jessi says.

"That's right, everything belonged to the people!"

"Yes, all twelve sheep, such a utopian paradise." Robin rolls his eyes as he goes over the remade bills of sale. "Alright, we can do this...now we just have to sell the idea to these people in terms they can understand."

"Do you understand what's going on?" Isen asks Mage.

"Not a clue. I find it's easier just to nod and wait until the time I have to start setting things on fire." Mage says.

"The crowd's yours Paladin Serpent." Robin says.

Heh heh heh. Bueno.

They just don't know Princess Mumei is gonna tear through their numer web of loans so bad it's gonna make the guildmaster's head spin. The Coins actually could be the better choice for the debtors.

There's a pause as the groups in the crowd talk among themselves. A few people slink off back inside the door, followed by a few more. At the very least it looks like the Occuli no longer have an riot on their hands. Just people squabbling among themselves about whom they want to be in debt to.

"Have fun with that Dave." Robin says.

"Enjoy meeting the proletariat." Jessi says.

"Uhh, sure!" Ryan rallies. "I am here to help the downtrodden, become less...trod...down!" He looks at an Occuli. "Get me a table."

"Let's go before they make us figure out more of this crap." Peri says, pulling at your elbow.

You go inside Bronze Peak. It's not as big of a bustiling fungal lit metropolis as it was when you left. There are a lot of abandoned stores, boarded up houses, and other signs of loss. There's still people going about their daily work, and the town doesn't feel like its dying or on its last legs. Rather that this is a being that needed amputation surgery to survive, and now has woken up with a missing leg.

Balles is in the Manor. His once perfect world of order, now endless paperwork, maps, chaos, and numbers. Princess Mumei is handed a stack and tears into it like the bird of prey that she is.

"I take it you saw what was going on outside." Balles says sighing. "That's the more vocal ones. I'm afraid of the people who are just quietly resenting Jeremy and myself, and plotting behind our backs..." He shakes his head. "No...no, don' go down THAT road." He takes a deep breath. The man's starting to become a nervous wreck.

"My Lord, Prince Itzak." He says bowing.

"Isen, please." He sighs. "So, other than you Balles (Isen has mispronounced Balles' name) who's in charge here? The Mayor? Local Council?"

"No one...the Mayor ran off and there hasn't been a Local Council here since...gosh...since even before I was assigned here."

"Well, we need to change that." He sighs. "Okay, Ssen? Go get ready to greet our special guests. I need to talk to this Jeremy guy and the Paladin and fig-"

"There's a problem about that." Balles says. "A big problem."

"What now?" Tricia moans.

"Are you aware of the group that calls themselves the Glass Assassins?" Balles says.

"Yeah. They're high level mercs." Isen says. "They use that name to sound cool."

"Right, well...apparently they're at the Bear Shrine. They sent my people back here packing."

"They aren't after the books are they?" Lea gasps. "Those are priceless!"

"Kind of." Balles says. "The people they sent back had a list of demands with them. At first I thought that they just were upset that they lost a few sources of free money from them. Apparently they were getting kickbacks from some people here...now it's all dried up. But some of these demands make very little sense to me." He sighs and hands you the list.

The Glass Assassins want a large amount of money. Jeremy's bank to close. Balles to resign. Jeremy's whorehouse to reopen. All of Rachel's sketchbook designs. And the Dawnchasers, Rachel, Quentin, and Jeremy, to turn themselves over to them.

Otherwise they're going to torch the entire Bear Shrine and destroy the other three Iron Books.

"They haven't made a move, according to my scouts...other than to set up a good amount of archers, and crossbow men to scan the skies. They've been shooting at anything that flies that they can see." Balles says.

"Excuse us." Tricia says, as you all step away from Balles.

"This stinks of the you-know-who." Tricia says.

"But why not just torch the place now?" Mage asks. "If the books are such a problem for them."

"Maybe the Glass Assassins aren't puppets, or they need the books a little?" Mari suggests.

"Either way, they want us...I say we go give them what they want." Peri says.

"Oh, I know this one!" Isen says. "They call themselves that because their leader was thrown out of a window once, and has pieces of glass embedded in his face. They say he now has all of his people put a glass shard into their flesh as a piercing to show their loyalty." He grins.

"Do we have their total numbers? What other gear are they kitted out with? Overall positions for their troops? Who's their leader?"

"There's about twenty-five of them. We think half of that number have been put on arrow duty." Balles says pulling up a map of the shrine. "Their leader in inside the old prayer hall. Other than Prince...Isen's...description of him. That's all we know." He shakes his head. "I don't understand why Swords let a rogue merc group like this go on for so long. We've had a bounty on them for ages, too."

"Shooting at anything that they can see, huh? Any idea how we could get in there *without* them seeing?"

"Ted's caves!" Mari says. "Those boar caves and tunnels run all the way through Snow Peaks. We should be able to get to the shrine through them, like last time."

You nod at Mari. "Did they give you time table as when all of this is to be done? How many troops do we have available for use?"

"That's another strange thing." Balles said. "They've got no hostages, other than the shrine itself, and they gave us no time limit." He shrugs. "As for troops..." He sighs. "I can send a few men up with you into those tunnels, but not too many at once or we risk a cave in." He points at the map. "I can move the bulk of my forces here, and charge in easily enough, but with all those archers, we'd be cut down like nothing."
>>
>>24497173
He probably shut it down cause he's busy with the bank thing. Also, kinda dangerous with so many people out for his blood.
>>
>>24497173
To be fair, Jeremy hasn't turned his girls out into the cold and shut down his business. He's still letting them stay in Sandover House, but the Parlor and Garden are closed until further notice. If the girls want to find other work, or pursue other careers, he's willing to help/ Otherwise they're just running the place like a very very expensive hotel, as per his orders.
>>
>>24497256
He just hasn't been hanging around in his smoking jacket, trying to be everyone's friend and such. Sandover House still exists and there's probably some 'off the books' action still happening, but what it was BEFORE you came to town is dead and gone.
>>
>>24497215
>"That's another strange thing." Balles said. "They've got no hostages, other than the shrine itself, and they gave us no time limit."

Well, of course. It's a trap. It screams "come and get us, Dawnchasers!".

> He shrugs. "As for troops..." He sighs. "I can send a few men up with you into those tunnels, but not too many at once or we risk a cave in." He points at the map. "I can move the bulk of my forces here, and charge in easily enough, but with all those archers, we'd be cut down like nothing."

"Keep your men together and get them as close as you can without being seen. Have them ready to mop up the place. We'll take care of what we can from the inside."

Let's not drag red-medallions along with us through the caves; you know that color is bad luck for survival. On the other hand, we *could* bring along a couple of extra allies, especially sneaky ones like Robin.

> "I don't understand why Swords let a rogue merc group like this go on for so long. We've had a bounty on them for ages, too."

How about we go ask them about that, and dig for some intel?
>>
>>24497215
"Well ... I might have one way that might solve this quickly, if you don't mind twenty-five dead mercs that is.

"I could poison the area. I don't know if I can do the whole area in one go but it is an option. Also don't know if it damage the books inside or not.

"If we don't do that we'll have to break up into strike teams and hit those archers fast to give your troops an opening to get into the Shrine and put an end to this. We do have their exacts spots, right, the archers that is."

Eh. Still thinking of better ways to go about this ...
>>
>>24497345
>"I could poison the area. I don't know if I can do the whole area in one go but it is an option. Also don't know if it damage the books inside or not.

I have the distinct impression that we're talking "room" rather than "entire shrine". Still a good idea, though, and if we can sneak in unseen it'd be a fast way to take out a crowd.
>>
>>24497328
Bringing Robin along will cost us or Balles. It's a good idea but we will have to pay them.
>>
>>24497359
Yeah, that's what I'm thinking thus why I said we didn't know if we could do a shrine or just parts of it. If we can sneak in close enough and drop a group of archers in one go with that the more power to us then.
>>
>>24497381
well, there IS a bounty. But I sort of want it for ourselves.

>>

These assassins have a bounty on their heads. Just ask Robin if he wants to come along and help for an equal share of the bounty. He's one extra head along with the Dawnchasers' five/six; we can spare that much. And if he's not interested, oh well; we'll manage without him.
>>
>>24497215

>>24497514
We've been through once, and we still have the map and compass. I think we'd manage.

Which reminds me, while we shouldn't return personally, we should make sure word gets to Old One about the attack on the Bear Shrine after we finish off the assassins.
>>
>>24497381
The more I think about this the more I want Robin on board for this. Because if we do break up into teams I was thinking of Lea/Peri/Robin in one and Mage/Ssen/Tricia in the other. >>
>>24497665
Could work, yeah. "You're bringing a third of the people; you get a third of the bounty."
>>
>>24497514
"Do we need to get Ted to go through those caves?" You ask.

"No, I think I can manage solo." Peri says. "I remember the path we took last time, and the Snow Peak caves are much less hostile than the Dark Peak ones. We can make our way through without much trouble, especially since there's no time limit." She says. "I also think I may have found a trick about the compass. I'll show you that later."

"Alright," You look at Balles. "Keep your men together and get them as close as you can without being seen. Have them ready to mop up the place. We'll take care of what we can from the inside."

Balles nods, understood.

"Aww, can't I come?" Isen says.

"My Lord, I'm sorry but I cannot allow yourself to be put in such dan-"

"Yeah, yeah, yeah..." Isen sighs. "I know the deal."

Tara squeezes his shoulder. "We can have fun here!"

"Dealing with debtors and more civil duty, yipee." Isen twirls a finger in the air unenthusiastically.

"Anyway, we need to find Rob...I mean David." You say.

You locate the Fey Court trio at Coins. 'Dave' has just dropped off the last of the contracts and looks very upset at how he has been personally plighted by the plight of the people. "It's as if they don't appreciate how much better their lives will be once the revolution comes and upsets their lives...wait...hold on. I didn't say that right."

"It's okay, hon." Jessi says.

"Hey," Robin says. "So, the deadbeats are gone, and we're rich...kinda." He shrugs. "Honestly, never thought I'd get something for Coins I'd never want to steal." He frowns looking at the papers. "Ah well, what's up. You have that focused look on your face again."

"And I suppose you want my whole crew on this, right?" He closes his eyes. "The current bounty on breaking up the Glass Assassins is 5,000 with an extra 500 for the head of their leader. Make it 4,500, and we're in."

"Ah, good, we've got the jokes out of the way early. You're bringing three, we're bringing five. Or six if you're counting brains, but [look over at Jessi and Ryan] you really don't want us doing that. 1875 gold would be your fair share, and whoever finishes off the leader can have the 500 for that. If you're not interested for that much, we'll manage without you."
>>
>>24497883
Make it an even 2000 on top of the 500 for whoever takes the leaders head.
>>
>>24497895
I think being completely fair puts the offer more above reproach. If we start fiddling with the numbers, Robin wouldn't see any reason why we couldn't fiddle with them some more. But a completely even split has a fairness that's hard to argue with.
>>
>>24497883

"Ah, good, we've got the jokes out of the way early. You're bringing three, we're bringing five. Or six if you're counting brains, but you really don't want us doing that." You say looking at the pair. "1875 gold would be your fair share, and whoever finishes off the leader can have the 500 for that. If you're not interested for that much, we'll manage without you."

"Glad to see that your sense of humor is good too. Yeah. I admit, that they don't make the best first impression. But we're the best second story crew you'll ever see, and since you're coming to us, instead of strapping in with a bunch of Occuli, means that this job takes finesse and skills, which means that we are a supply that's in demand." He nods. "I appreciate a fair split. That's why I'm going to split it fairly among the three of us. 3000, head bounty's yours."
>>
I love these negotiations, but do not feel strongly either way about them.

Thus, I'm getting snacks. have fun!
>>
>>24497948
Counter offer of 2750? That's with splitting the head bounty also. Thoughts?
>>
I dunno guys, maybe 2400? Even that's pushing it.

While their help would definitely make our job easier we could probably do it without them. They're the margin for error.
>>
>>24497948
"2500, and we split the head bounty."
>>
>>24497948
"You think that's a fair split? It's a good thing we've got others helping with the accounting around here. If you want to count our 'crews' as even, which is really pushing it, then 2500 each, and we get the head bounty since we're bringing more people. Final offer, take it or leave it. We've got more than enough finesse to manage on our own."
>>
>>24498003
Personally I'd be completely up for walking out on them when they turned down the 1875. I agree that we don't need them.
>>
>>24498019
Guys this isn't about the money ... this about getting the library safe and out of danger. Money is nice but not the main thing here. Their help will help us do our job faster and put everyone at less risk.
>>
>>24498019
we might be able to pull it off, but i doubt it would be easy, and remember how we almost lost 2 people in our last large fight at Old One's lair.

also, protecting the library is worth the gold, especially since we still need to read the other 2 books.
>>
>>24498030
And walking out is also a pretty good negotiation tactic. Makes it clear we're willing to do it without them.

A quick question about our paralytic poison. Is it only effective when it gets into the bloodstream or could we potentially take somebody out by spitting it into their face?

This is Robin that tactic wont work on him,.

Robin looks at the other two. They nods. So does he. "Done." He shakes your hand. "2500, it is. Are we going now, or do we meet later? If so, where's the staging area?"
>>
>>24498070
"We're going to talk to Swords before we leave and get all the information they have on these folks. And personally I'd like to get my hands on some anti-venom before we go; I've had too many bad experiences with poisoned arrows to want to take a chance around archers."

Should we set the east gate as the staging area, or something more covert?
>>
>>24498063
I'd be more tempted to ask Robin to shake on it, with Ssen spitting in her hand first.
>>
>>24498070
Meet up at the gates before dusk?

Do a night assault upon the Shrine unless we need more time to get there. Like to hit it when the night is at it's darkes point.

Ah question I guess more meta; did we get maps from Balles before we left? With marks as to where the archers are and such? Also should get single flare from him to so he can know when we've cleared the archers out/'oh fuck we need help.'

I think we'll need to leave within the hour to get there by nightfall. I agree that we should hit them at night, though; it'll make us much harder to spot.
>>
>>24498159
Oh, and let's make sure Mage has the supplies for a stealth spell.
>>
>>24498070
Whatever else we plan, I say we also give some of our paralytic to Peri/Mari and Robin. It could help immensely to give our two best stealth allies a means of instantly and silently disabling any given foe.
>>

Good call. We can do so when we get through the caves. It should keep from there until the battle.

Yes, you've gotten a tactical map and a signal flare like you used in First Stone Hall.

"Understood." Robin says. "Time?"

"Dusk, we're going to try and hit them in the night."

He nods. "Alright. You want these people dead or incapacitated?"
>>
>>24498212
>He nods. "Alright. You want these people dead or incapacitated?"

"Incapacitated if you can manage it, but don't hesitate to kill if it's less risk. They're a guild of assassins; they'd best be prepared to receive the same treatment they dole out."
>>
>>24498212
"We generally go for incapacitation, but don't get yourself killed protecting the dangerous assassins. Heck, plan B is to just gas 'em."

Incapacitate if it's convenient, kill otherwise.

I don't think that'll suffice; the gas is also acidic.
>>
>>24498372
yeah, but acid is not NEARLY so bad if you have your membranes covered. Mouth, nose, eyes, ears to a lesser extent. The skin itself can deal much better.

"Understood." He nods. You notice that Ryan and Jessi's body language has changed, Ryan's revolutionary garb and Jessi's goth doo-dads have vanished. Jessi's also taking off her make-up.

"I also have access to a paralytic." You say to Robin. He shakes his head. "Unneeded, but thank you for the offer. We prefer to work with our own materials, as we know them inside and out. If it's an effective substance and easy to get, if you 'make' it the way I think you do, we'll talk a trade, but for now we've got our own. "We'll see you at the staging area for the operation." He and the other two walk off, and vanish as they go around a corner.

The Swords Guildhall speaker is reluctant to talk to you. Thanks to your meddling, half of the forges in this town have been closed, along with some mines, all of them paid dues to Swords. They have the basic information on the Glass Assassins that you can get off of a wanted poster. After the battle, I'm curious what they might have been able to tell us.

Where might we pick up some decent anti-venoms around here, then? From a Cups healer?

Yeah, god only knows I love the sound of an arrow makes when it hits that shield.
>>
>>24498520
I was thinking the other way around; Beacon seems unlikely to let others use it as well as Ssen can, and it's built for Ssen's size and ability to wield it, but Clang could potentially protect others.
>>
>>24498558
The problem is their respective fighting styles don't match fighting with a shield, that's the problem.
>>
>>24498558
Its less a question of 'sentient equipment' and more 'shield proficiency' here.
>>
>>24498456
>Where might we pick up some decent anti-venoms around here, then? From a Cups healer?

They do have anti-venoms for many different lower grade poisons at Cups. Problem is that there's plant-based, animal-based, alchemically-created, and magical. There's no magic bullet anti-venom for all of them. There's something that helps a little, it's a healing potion that's designed to slow the heart, rather than be a stimulant. It's maybe good for keeping people alive long enough to get the right anti-venom that you need.

>>24498461
You find Tallow at Sandover House. He's been helping Jeremy and Quentin, not with the books, but with a little cooking and cleaning and keeping the house running while the other two run around like headless chickens. Apparently, judging by the smell from the pots he's stirring, Tallow was your father's designated cook.

"The Glass Assassins?" He shakes his head. "I don't know much about THESE people, but there's always been a 'bad guy' mercenary outfit." He shrugs. "They go by different names, but they show up, cause trouble, serve a crime boss or two, get a bounty put out for them, and then guess who disbands them and kills their leader?"
>>
>>24498581
"We're not going to kill their leader, we're taking him in for questioning. Hopefully that will be enough to throw a wrench in the story."
>>
>>24498581
Sigh. "I guessed as much. Any tips then? We're trying to do this quite and quickly as possible. Already planning for a night assault on their positions. Hired some extra (wo)men to help tip the odds more for us. Also, have a way of getting to them without being seen ... hopefully. That seems like a good idea, but just for general paranoia, could we get one dose each of Glass Scorpion and Underside Wasp antidote if available? (I doubt we can do much against dragon bile.)

If there's no time limit, we may consider stopping by the last member of the bear tribe (we can do this after). We also should get some of the heart-slowing potion. Finally, we should prepare to possibly fight the lightbringer.

Okay, you have five doses of the slow poison potion.

Robin and his partners are waiting for you at the eastern door, but you almost miss him. Gone are the flashy gold and red of Robin, the obvious camo and rebel slogan wear of Ryan, and Jessi's goth. Now they wear dark grays and whites, their faces similarly painted. Ropes, a few pouches, and their weapons. Robin has a bandoleer of daggers, along with a pair that look like the child of a dagger and brass knuckles. Ryan has a chain with a blade on one end and a ball on the other looped around an arm, and Jessi has two small looking scythes at her hip.

"Holting. Grace went down into the city years ago to breed, I asked her to search if there were any Bear Tribe left. So that I may have a creature that would be worth my time. Holting was the only name that she returned to me...and apparently he had turned his back on his people and their words. I thought it just human ignorance and weakness...but now...now I see the web of sickness these monsters have placed over MY land...and I will NOT let it stand." Old One closes an eye. "That is what I know, Little Dragon."

"We'll want try to take the archers first, after which we're free to decide whether to go for the bounty or call in support. Very sneaky looking, by the way. I'd have missed you if you weren't so warm."

"Good to know." Robin says. "Alright, we'll stay with you until we get out of the caves. Then we'll start to take care of your roof problems. The ground issues are yours to deal with until we can join up with you later." He says.

"Signal when you've cleared the roofs." Lea says. "We'll have an Occuli clean up team waiting here, on that signal they'll move in and help with mop up."

"Understood." Robin says.

You all head out into the snow, after a bit, you arrive at the warren of caves. "Alright." Mari says. "Give me the Compass and the Dragon Book."

Tricia hands the items over. Mari sets the compass on top of he book. The compass spins and points in a new direction. "Heh, I was right...that's why they put a piece of the Lantern inside it at first and why it reacted so strongly to the other coins. This is an old Dwarven Miner's compass. They use it to locate precious metals, as the needle homes in on the vague direction of similar materials. The pull is greater if it's a singular metal, or magic...and in the case of this..."

"It's point to the other Iron Books." Lea says. "Brilliant Mari."

"You expected less?" She grins. "This isn't perfect, but it should get us where we need to go." A pause. "Hopefully."

But the power of the Dramatae is tied to the Citadel, and it's weakening. Hell, having to scrap the current 'story' basically means they're on their last legs (not to mention the rampant use of magic to make Passions).

So, the last time they tried something last-ditch, Stone Hall happened. They're a group that doesn't exactly trust eachother, they're running out of magic and time, are stressed, and seem to lack some competency.

And every large action they seem to try brings us in one way or another. Might as well have the Light being the 6th Dramatae, wearing a trollface.

Then Mari's dart, coated with whatever Mari's been putting on these things, slams into him. He goes down.

"Ralph?" The woman asks. She takes a step forward.

"What hap-urk!" She freezes, locked in place as your hand is around her neck and your other hand is in a gap in her armor. Her body goes limp.

"Again, why did we wait so long to fight these guys?" Mage says as he and Tricia go to tie up the man.

"Don't point out our good luck to the universe." Lea says, as she helps you bind the woman's arms and legs. "It'll hear you and take it as a dare."

I'm going to second this as it seems to be the gist of what people want.

The girl looks at her sleeping partner, and then looks directly into your eyes. She sighs. "Fine. But you knocked out the wrong person. I didn't get the direct orders. Ralphie did. It's got something to do with the new story. We're supposed to get our hands on the books and take out as many 'unstable elements' as we can." She rolls her eyes. "Then I assume we'd have new orders by then, or be told to go blank slate, and start a new crew." She sighs. "Look, we're not the bad guys. We're like Rage, okay. She narrows her eyes. "Hostages? Heh, alright. I've got hostages for you. How about most of the Glass Assassins?" She grins. "You think most of them had a choice to join up with us? Yeah, they signed of their own free will, but they were either at the end of their rope, or utterly desperate. They're the people that fail the moral code you Paladins preach, and just can never get back up. And they're...wait...hold on... ah, damn now's Ralphie's line." She groans. Her eyes just speak volumes. You have a good idea of that she and her partner have been 'locked up' before.

"And as for the second, we already have more than enough reason for Peace to die many times over, but my deepest sympathies, assuming you're telling me the truth. From what I saw of him, Rage seemed like a decent person in over his head."

"Thank you."

"Who's Ralph to you anyway? You seem eager to leave with him and not alone." You ask.

"He's my great-grandson." She says. "He doesn't know that though. He thinks we're just cousins." She chuckles. "A long lifespan can become very complicated if you aren't careful. My advice is to insist on family tattoos, that prevents horrifyingly awkward situations like when Tragedy discovered that he had...never mind.

"So, we have a deal?"

"We see you in combat, you will die." Lea says.

"Yeah, yeah. You guys are badasses, no need to tell me. You're still alive after doing all of this." She sighs and closes her eyes. Grunts for a moment then opens them back up. "Done. Fragment-face, who had that before we picked him up, is now as skilled as he was before we jacked him up.

"As for the Dramatae's need for the books. I can only guess that they need them to help tame the monsters. You know what happens if you try to force Citadel into a person's mind too fast, they go loopy. Same with monsters. They want to be able to control lots of them, without making them weak or draining Citadel too much. They must want an army. Probably they'll use it to march on Citadel. Led by this new Fallen Lightbringer. They've done a similar story to this in the Third Age. That time it was with the Desert Tribes.

"You're the best at it." You say.

"Which I find slightly disturbing." Mage says.

Lea does a quick two point jab and a quick punch and Robbie goes down like a light.

"Now just one guy left." Peri says.

You all head back to the entrance. The door is open.

Trica, and Mage draw weapons. "We closed that."

"And we reopened it." Robin says. The trio are there.

"You three are done?" Mari asks.

"Yep." Jessi says.

"How many are dead?" Lea asks.

I'm hoping it's the answer to "how many people died", ideally with a -1 attached to make it 0-4.

>>

Ryan holds up one finger. "We did it swiftly, and we needed ONE corpse. Plus the guy was a prick who like to shoot at nesting birds."

"We think." Jessi says.

"There's only 5 of them left." Robin says. "They're in the prayer hall with the head jerk."

"We thought that we'd save them for you and the Occuli." Ryan says.

"Not that we aren't game for a little fun." Jessi says. "I mean even the one we killed wasn't that bloody. We're up for a little fun."
