You are Ssen, a Lamia raised by a human Paladin who adopted you after killing the ones who birthed you. You are grown now, and Father has passed on. After a great deal of work, you have become a Paladin like your Father, and now take up his duties.

You are accompanied by your best friend from childhood, the insect druid Tricia; Mage, a magic user who ran away from his family of cannibal raiders known as the Ghouls (Yes, his name is Mage. It was his idea); Persephone, a 22-year old thief/ex-guerllia fighter (She goes by Peri), and Mari, a 13-year old prodigy scholar/now sniper, who has her mind and soul trapped within Peri's body; and Lea, a deeply religious musician/martial artist, trained by her father, a famous trainer for arena fighters, she's covered from her mouth down in bandages to hide the horrific state her body has become thanks to the 'cures' that saved her from cancer.

Your journey continues...

Ryan holds up one finger. "We did it swiftly, and we needed ONE corpse. Plus the guy was a prick who like to shoot at nesting birds."

"We think." Jessi says.

"There's only 5 of them left." Robin says. "They're in the prayer hall with the head jerk."

"We thought that we'd save them for you and the Occuli." Ryan says.

"Not that we aren't game for a little fun." Jessi says. "I mean even the one we killed wasn't that bloody. We're up for a little fun."

"Now shall we all continue with are stealthy ways and finish this little or no blood?"
>>
>>24503721
At this point, we've taken out all but 6 of a force of 25 or so with only a single one dead. I think we ought to try for the prayer hall ourselves, and get Mage to re-cast the stealth spell. We can handle 6, whether stealthily or if it turns into a full battle. But honestly, I want to see if we can handle the entire Shrine with pure stealth.

Oh yes, everyone needs that stealth spell on them.

We've been using that bolt-based anesthesia for a well now. It's fine. But we'll need to check on the ones we took down.

"Fine by me." Robin says.

"Alright, hold still."

"Hey, Lea, you were right. We should never talk about our luck. Ever." You say.

You get up, ears ringing, and you see Mage pointing at Ryan and shouting something. You can't hear anything. Neither can the others.

Your dodge is good enough to keep what would have been a blow that would have cleaved off something, to just hurting like hell.

Mage and Jessi manage to connect, but Peri breaks one of her blades.

Then, something strange happens. All of the warriors, except the leader, drop their weapons and raise their hands.

The chief shouts out something, and in the middle of his lips moving.

"-ARDS! We're the greatest force known to Citadel!" The chief says. "We can take them!"

You're surrounded by the Red Occuli. They have crossbows pointed at the Glass Assassins.

Also, there are harpies perched on the wall all around you. They're also armed with stone daggers and very very sharp looking talons.

"I will not fall to you Paladin Serpent!" The chief says.

It's obvious that this guy is going to fight to the end. You can humor him and keep fighting...or you can give the order to fire.

You move like lightning and wrap yourself around the chief. He struggles but your around him far too tight. He's at your mercy. Just a little more of the black in his claw wounds, or a slight bite, would be enough for a proper full does to render him totally paralyzed.

You jab your claw at the man's neck and you feel him go limp. He slumps to the ground and you uncoil around him. He falls to the ground.

The Red Occuli move in to bind the arms of the other Glass Assassins, and give the wounded among you treatment.

Paul flaps down to you. "Her majesty has asked me to speak to you all because I can speak human tongue better than others.

"She is here to first speak to you about her people staying among you, aiding you, and living in a new safe place." Paul says. "But she has changed her mind. She has seen skill and cleverness of a new kind that she is enthralled and impressed. She will be happy to talk terms, as long as the one that has impressed her remains. They...fascinate her." He nods.

The harpy that's slightly larger than the others flaps down from the wall. Judging by the ornate necklace around her neck, she must be the queen. She takes a few steps forward, and then bows...

"I can handle this." Robin says, gently pushing the feathers away. "I can handle this."

"Are you kidding? Your name is ROBIN! do you know how wise I'll be cracking? Oh man you are not prepared!"

"I...have no revolutionary slogan for this kind of scenario." Ryan says.

"You should invite her back home for dinner."

"Funny."

"No seriously." Mage says. "We have food specially for them. It's part of negotiations."

Robin just smiles at the Queen. "Please tell her Majesty that I cordially invite her to dinner, so that we may further talk about negotiations."

Paul translates. The Harpy Queen says something and Paul looks at Robin. "Her Majesty is happy to accept your invitation to having a meal at your residency, and happily accepts your role as her consort to this dinner, as all dinners must be taken in at least pairs, for safety and security, and fairness." Paul says. "You are her consort, and deserving of much respect. She will let you chew the first bite. A great honor."

Robin smiles at the Harpy Queen. "It would be my honor."

The Harpy Queen puts one of her feathers in Robin's hair. Then she flaps up and goes up to the Bear shrine's roof to 'hold court' according to Paul.

"Is this all of them?" Peri asks.

"Yes, this is all of us who were able to make the trip, and are free of whispers within our head." Paul says.

"There's what thirty of you?"

"Twenty eight." Paul says.

"Huh." Mari says.

Robin looks at you. "Please, tell me that I have options here."

"Well, you could try being charming. I'll send for someone to fetch the trade carts, Jeremy and Quentin too. Then we'll discuss it after a nice big meal and some accounting. Now, excuse me a moment," You say. "I need to go somewhere peaceful and die laughing." You slither off to get your wounds and clawless hand, bandaged by the Occuli medics.

I'd really like to get some additional details about Lamia Dodge and how it works. As well as how the paralytic works in combat.
>>
>>24506221
Well, however it works I don't think we were doing it right. Mostly because it started coming into play at like 1 AM.
>>
>>24506221
I've been trying a few things about it actually. Seeing how it'll work best, because I don't want you to have to give up your attack for it. So I may limit it to, if you have B&C, you can dodge one attack from one source, or if it's a solo enemy, then every other attack. If you go with primal weapons, then you can try and dodge every attack. That sound like a fair rule?
>>
>>24506246
fair enough. It's completely cool if it changes as we get better at using it in-universe. It's an interesting mechanic.
>>
>>24506246
As for the paralytic. 4 doses = 1 'full' dose which equals total paralysis. Target rolls to try and shake off the dose. He does or gets healed, dosage goes down. They get negative modifiers for every dose, unless they take a full turn to shake it off automatically. Four does, they are out cold, two full doses and they die.

Sound good?
>>
>>24506268
fair gametically, a bit counter-intuitive roleplay wise, but whatever. There's plenty of excuses for why it doesn't work as well in combat. More adrenaline, or they bleed out some of the poison, or you didn't get them well enough, etc.
>>
I'm too tired to continue discussions. I hope desperately to see you tomorrow, echo.
>>
>>24506268
I am making up these rules on the fly. Feel free to call me out on stuff if it seems OP or unbalanced, or I just fuck up. Which will happen. I want this to be fun, /tg/ dice be damned.

But ugh, this is really melting the brain. Next quest, I am using NO original stuff. Stealing a system, and it's going to be nothing but crossovers and references.

But I swear I'm going to finish this puppy strong. I have an end game in mind. A clear path to the end game, and a fully proper final boss.

>>
>>24506306
>>24506317
I guess I samefag too much. I should condense posts.
>>
>>24506246
Seems pretty reasonable to me.

I'd like to understand what exactly we're rolling against, and under what circumstances we successfully dodge behind and attack. That was the bit that didn't seem clear in battle.

I'll take care of writing it up on the battle reference afterward.

>>24506268
Given that we get two claw attacks per round, the 4-dose thing seems somewhat reasonable, though that does make it much less powerful at ending a battle compared to a wrap and crush. At a minimum I'd wonder if it really takes 4 for a random mook, or just for a boss/mini-boss.

As for the shaking off, I think it makes sense to let them force their way through the initial paralytic effects (negative modifiers), or to explicitly heal if they have anti-venoms or magical healing available, but I don't think it makes sense for the dosage to go down. Given that we can very nearly take them out of the battle with not much more than 4 hits, or crush them to death with less, I don't think they should be able to just shrug off doses of one of the strongest poisons in the world.

So I'd suggest that they get negative modifiers with the initial doses, have no way to resist full paralysis once they hit four (or perhaps 2-3 for weaker enemies), and bosses have some ability to shrug off the negative modifiers but not the eventual paralysis.
>>
>>24506335
(Also keeping in mind that we still have to actually *hit* to dose them, which this battle proved the potential difficulty of.)
>>
>>24506335
>I'd like to understand what exactly we're rolling against, and under what circumstances we successfully dodge behind and attack. That was the bit that didn't seem clear in battle.

Right, okay. Attacker rolls a 15, a hit, you roll a 17. You dodge it.

Attacker rolls a 9, you roll a 4. He misses anyway.

Attacker rolls a 9, you roll a 16. THAT gets you behind them for the bonus.

If you are on omni-dodge and you are attacking person A you have to dodge person A's assault by more than 5, if you dodge attacker B by more than 5 it does nothing.

>>24506335
>So I'd suggest that they get negative modifiers with the initial doses, have no way to resist full paralysis once they hit four (or perhaps 2-3 for weaker enemies), and bosses have some ability to shrug off the negative modifiers but not the eventual paralysis.

I like it .Done.
>>
>>24506162

So what do those times mean for those in New York?
>>
>>24506387
>Attacker rolls a 9, you roll a 16. THAT gets you behind them for the bonus.

Ah, OK, that makes sense; previously when you'd explained it you said it had no effect on a miss, only on a roll that would otherwise hit. This approach seems much more sensible.

> If you are on omni-dodge and you are attacking person A you have to dodge person A's assault by more than 5, if you dodge attacker B by more than 5 it does nothing.

Fair enough; I can see why you'd only get the extra attacks against your current target.

I know it is late as fuck to suggest this, but should we make it standard procedure to only use claws in stealth situations or vs masses of lightly armored folks, and beacon/clang for the heavier ones.
I actually passed out right before mages fumble so I didn't get a chance to suggest this.
>>
>>24509276

Beacon + Clang would lead to less stalemates, and the numbers are pretty similar.

That is to say that you keep building up charges and eventually blow your light load. Claws + poison seems best for stealth. Best combo would be somehow training to work in dodges with Clang and heavy armour.

Oh yeah, speaking of time and plans, how are we going to handle the pending attack on River's Cross? There's lamias in the forest that Peace will probably try to work into her plan for extra insult to us, and we can be sure that Add-whatever kid will be the "Fallen Lightbringer". Way I see it we can take their figurehead away, try and get to the lamias first (diplomacy or combat), or pull a Rock Ridge and use the buildings to turn the whole place into one giant kill-box. Possibly the latter could involve sealing magic for disabling and subsequently killing Peace.

His light, do we have the strength to carry on this mighty task in one night... or are we just jerking off?

>pending attack on River's Cross?
There are hundreds if not thousands of small towns like RC through the Kingdom. It doesn't have to be our hometown, it could be anywhere. Why would they make it easier for us to find it?

>>24506162
>And with that we come to a close. It's a little up in the air if I'll be able to run a thread tomorrow. If I do it'll be Sunday, May 28th, 5-7pm PST or not at all. The next thread for certain will be 4-6pm PST on Tuesday, May 30th.
Do you mean April 28? Or are you taking a one month hiatus?
>>
>>24511904
I really like the idea of luring Peace herself into a depopulated River's Cross, only to have Mari crossbow her in the back with a bolt loaded with enough poison(s) to kill Old One.
>>
i believe he meant april 30th since that hits a tuesday and may 30th is a thursday.
>>
>>24512090
They're the Bad Guys, and we've been foiling their plans. Storybook badguy logic would demand that they attack our hometown as retaliation, to finally give River's Cross the bad end that everyone seemed to assume our adventuring would make inevitable. And storybook logic is what makes the entire Lightbringer/Dramatae world go round.

As villains their weakness is that they've been doing this for so long they have trouble breaking from their own schtick. They're utterly predictable, and when someone sidesteps their whole scheme they can't seem to recover.
>>
>>24512263
That doesn't mean we should jump to the conclusion we'll be able to predict all of their movements all the time.
And what if they don't hit River's cross? Are we prepared to deal with either eventuality?
>>
>>24509276
>>24509359
this is what I've been suggesting for a while, I'm glad the story apparently backs my suggestions.

>>24511765
I really want to get those lamias on our side at some point. Even WITHOUT the dramatae attacks, wild lamias near our hometown isn't the best of things.
>>
>>24512263
>>24512349
If they don't hit river's cross, we have no way of predicting WHERE they will hit, and not enough manpower to guard every little town.

The best we can do is ride into that town with a lamiacavalry when we hear of its troubles, and hope nightmare is fast enough.
>>
>>24512349
Nor should we overthink the issue. If there's an obvious target, we should prepare for that to be where the Dramatae make their move. Right now, River's Cross is both the symbolic-value target de jour and the place we're the least prepared to defend. And if it comes right down to it, Tricia's parents and Liam have been at this long enough to know how to either turn that town into a fortress, evacuate, or possibly pursue a few alternatives I can't even think of right now: and they probably have multiple options for accomplishing each. All they need is advance warning.

>>24512522
This is also true, but if memory serves we never knew exactly where to find them, nor what condition they were in mentally.

The wisest call would be to hedge our bets and prepare the town for an attack in general and THEN try to deal with the likely assailants Peace might employ. Three arrows bundled together are much harder to break and whatnot.
>>
>>24512663
>all they need is advance warning
Yeah, something we don't actually have the ability to do right now. Unless you want to use the array, or some extremely valuable long distance magic communication object. Or we have a timeskip to build signal towers.

As for the Lamia, I have fair hopes for their mental state. They've not attacked river's crossing yet, after all. I also have the sneaking worry that the reason for that, if they ARE citadel lamia, is the pherimones of a different lamia ward them away. And our pherimones haven't been in town for a while.
>>
>>24512918
Not gonna lie, it would probably mean going there and telling them in person. That being said, I think the risk of River's Crossing being the home of the next round of Lightbringers is high enough to warrant our attention.

As for the other lamias, to discuss that now would be purely conjecture and their potential involvement in Peace's plans is speculative.
>>
>>24513370
Man, there's so much to do. We need to get our home town ship shape, set signal towers between our two cities, either build or secure shore defenses or ships, gain elvish support, STILL need to talk to the harpies, still need to attend to the inventions of barney's issue...

and that's ignoring the topic of citadel.
>>
>>24513424
Delegation is the key to good management. Delegate the task of securing the coast and building communications towers to others. Leaves us with more time to handle other issues that require our direct attention.

I think we should consider starting an order or private militia of some sort.

I've been tossing around "The Serpentguard" for a while.
>>
>>24513651
That gets us more of a Merc reputation that diminishes our stature as a Paladin, and adds in a bunch of dumbasses to our ranks. One of our greatest strengths is that we're a small, hand-selected group: we have tight control over who gets in and how our team functions. If the Red orders are like bludgeons or axes, we're more like a scalpel. Our weakness, though, is numbers. It always will be.

The ideal solution? Start founding new cohorts of the Caligo Clarus: small, tight-knit teams like ours that can handle most problems alone, but that can still call each other in for extra muscle.
>>
>>24513773
That works too. I may have just been swayed by the idea of green armor, but shining silver is almost as good. Can we think of anyone to tap for recruitment of the top of our heads? Or should we take a gaggle of squires and show them the way?
>>
>>24513810
Hell naw. You know who else wore green armor and was a professional pmc?

Those fucks we just gibbed.
>>
>>24514009
I think that's what the anon was going for. Turn some of the assassin's towards fighting the Dramatae.
>>
>>24513810
"Shining Armor" isn't something we seem to go in for. Part of our success so far has been due to being some of the few "Reasonable Paladins" in the world.

Honestly, Robin and his crew are the closest I can think of to our level of zany antics and skill. Plus, they have the benefit of already being a more-or-less cohesive unit.
>>
>>24514060
Yeah. What we should be doing is founding schools, funding -real- inventors and supporting scientific pioneers.
>>
>>24514060
>"shining armor" isn't something we go for
But we have a shining ass quicksilver shield and spear and steel armor, which can also be quite shiny.

We're reasonable, sure, but we're also shiny. We like the light.

Robin and his crew would be great, but I predict superbly expensive. I'd prefer going along with this over here

>>24514034
if we had any confidence in being able to retrain or gain the loyalties of the glass assassins.
>>
>>24514074
we need to find more inventors. we only have one. And whatever happened to the lighthouse-school extension we were discussing way back?
>>
>>24514123
Guys. Idea. We could expand the Caligo Clarus. The Caligo Scholarus. Detachments of scholars and highly skilled artisans accompanied by the wisest, most patient and open-minded men we can find among the red occuli, serving as bodyguards. They'd travel from town to town, emparting practical and technical knowledge upon any willing and able to learn. I bet a lot of the problems stemming from the loss of citadel's training wheels will be solved by giving people a bit of education.
>>
>>24514198
hmm... "Caligo" is the darkness part, the "clarus" is the see part.

Caligo Scholarus rolls off the tongue better, but sort of means scholars of the dark.

Other than naming, though, I'm all for it. We need to use our bounty money to contact the inventors of barney's items to hire them and also clear their inventions for public consumption. This will earn us a continuous income with which to fund the scholarus.

We've been putting off educating the people too long. Though I don't know what, exactly, we'd educate them about. All I have off the top of my head is this ancient history shit we're learning. or perhaps mathematics, it seems very few know how that magic works. Even Ssen is relatively in the dark.
>>
>>24514198
Yellow would likely yield more candidates.
>>
>>24514271
which ones were the yellows?
>>
>>24514271
>>24514285
heck, we could ask for volunteers from any color, and prune them down from whatever recruits we get.

I hope our legend is strong enough to make some aspiring young heroes want to understudy us. This plan kind of relies on it.
>>
>>24514271
I actually chose red -because- the number of viable recruits would be few. I want the most militant branch, the one most easily typecast as fire-and-perdition zealots, ie. a big part of the Dramatae's current schtick to slowly gain some real insight, tolerance and compassion. I want people everywhere to see the fearsome, battle-hardened men of the red occuli sitting down and learning how to cure leather, or how to shoe a horse, or how to set a broken bone alongside the everyman.
>>
>>24514443
guilty admission: Ssen doesn't really know how to do any of those things either. She needs some schooling herself.

I like the sentiment though, it goes nicely with our corruptor-of-purists title. Which we are never going to ditch.
>>
>>24514266
So how about Schola Clarus
>>
>>24514527
less marketable than the first one, but better in meaning. We'll think on it. Naming things never has been Ssen's strong point.
>>
>>24514266
Scholars of the Dark would be an apt title. Provided the motto of the organization is something along the lines of "Bringing the Light of Knowledge to the dark."
>>
>>24514807
Marketing! It works!

also, if we go through with this, I predict this converation a thousand times across all of history in caligo-offshoots.

"But what will you do when there is no more darkness to bring light to?"

"Retire!"
>>

More like a display of obfuscating shenanigans. Don't mind her she's half mad from age all the while the inside of our brain is all shiny and clockwork, a blued steel forged from lifetimes of experience, to the point where our ideas still seem bad but at that point we've carefully considered it to the point where we can turn our own downfall into our advantage.

I was unaware of the sweeper, but aware of vetinari. Upon reading, he seems quite apt.
