/tg/ - Traditional Games

File: 1356497884433.png-(720 KB, 527x687, map.png)
720 KB
This game takes place in the northern regions of the central continent. A vast area of land largely dominated by forest, but occasionally broken up by lakes and meadows.
Unlike the great desert to the near south, this is a land where the summers are mild, and the winters harsh with heavy snow.

What we do here is take a handful of organisms and develop them step by step to create part of a setting.

The rules to this are quite simple.
1) Evolve a creature by modifying their picture and giving a plausible reason. Please save as a .PNG file only. The art quality isn't what matters. The subject is.
2) Only a single modification/upgrade may be made per 'update'.
3) You can choose different species to upgrade.
4) Have fun.

File: 1356497986620.png-(10 KB, 751x286, Brown Furlong.png)
10 KB
>Brown Furlong
Descendants of the Paracos. The Brown Furlong is a fox-sized carnivorous mammal. Their mouths are filled with bacteria, much like in Komodo Dragons. Bites from the creature almost always result in severe infections.

Warm blooded.
Live birth.
>>

>Sull
Sulls are large, rat-sized insects that feed on vegetation. Their bulging compound eyes give them an impressive field of vision. To deter predators, they spray sticky webbing from the tips of their abdomens.
They are warm blooded, and insulated by a thick layer of fat under their exoskeletons.

Lays eggs. Larval young.
>>
File: 1356498104346.png-(7 KB, 325x257, Green Fluzpuff.png)
7 KB
Green Fluzpuff
A distant relative to the Sull, Green Fluzpuffs are small insects about the size of a junebug (or the size of the tip of one's pinky finger). They clumsily buzz from flower to flower, drinking nectar. What appears to be a thick coat of hair is actually irritating bristles which cause itching.
Much like Sulls, Fluzpuffs are warm blooded.

Lays eggs.
>>
File: 1356498193383.png-(7 KB, 297x254, pink frowg WIP.png)
7 KB
Pink Frowg
The image of this amphibian is about the actual size. They have a long, prehensile tongue which they use to catch bugs to eat. They inhabit the numerous ponds and small lakes scattered throughout the region.
Like other frowgs, the Pink Frowg is mildly poisonous, and is capable of delivering a weak electrical shock.

They are cold blooded and hibernate.
Lays eggs which hatch into tadpoles.
>>
File: 1356498361621.png-(12 KB, 434x398, Central Ramel.png)
12 KB
Central Ramel
Central Ramels are buffalo-sized omnivores which live in small herds. They have a unique form of skeleton which is made of external plates and internal joints. Their heads bears a strong resemblance to an axe, and can be used for a similar purpose. On the tip of their snouts is a pore which serves to shoot bursts of blood on attackers. Ramels are also known for having a notoriously bad temper.

Ramels are warm blooded.
Psuedo-egg live birth (births a modified placenta filled with fat and an embryo. Larval young hatches from the "egg").
>>
File: 1356498522403.png-(9 KB, 427x321, Stalckar.png)
9 KB
Stalckar
Descended from Stalcks, the Stalckar is the top predator of the central taiga. This wolf-sized, insectoid creature has powerful hind legs which it uses to pounce onto prey. Their mandibles are strong enough to break through the fresh shell of a recently moulted Ramel.

Being cold blooded, Stalckars hibernate for the winter season.
Lays eggs.
>>
File: 1356498572043.png-(4 KB, 152x252, Resel.png)
4 KB
That's it for animals. Now onto plants.

Resel
A descendant of the Rasig and a distant relative to Ragas. This grass-like plant that grows small berries during the warmer seasons. An interesting adaptation they have is that they release digestive enzymes from their roots, which allows them to grow larger and stronger on dead animals than just soil alone.
Pollonates and produces fruit.
>>
File: 1356498614515.png-(4 KB, 177x250, Bluva.png)
4 KB
Bluva
A simple flowering plant. They asexually produce via spores which they rely on insects to spread.
>>
File: 1356498889438.png-(3 KB, 149x226, False Bluva.png)
3 KB
False Bluva
While looking similar to Bluvas, this plant has little relation to them. It is in fact a specie of Mevola, carnivorous plants with electrical properties. They imitate appearance of Bluvas in order to attract prey. When an insect lands in the "flower", the False Bluva snaps its maw shut and electrocutes the victim within. After that, it actually swallows the bug, as Mevolas have a form of stomach in their stalks.

They produce via spores from the leaves along their base.
>>
File: 1356498930493.png-(3 KB, 203x179, Pozen.png)
3 KB
Pozen
Common underbrush. They grow to about a 1/3 of a meter (barely over one foot) high and are mildly poisonous.

Asexually produces via spores.

>>
File: 1356499046315.png-(13 KB, 473x378, Chartan.png)
13 KB
Chartan
Descendants of Yantars. These large pot-shaped plants grow up to 1.5 meters (5 feet) tall. They produce some potent toxins which leech into water held in the leaves. The coloration inside is an indicator of poison, alerting creatures to stay out.

Asexually produces via spores from the petals.
>>
File: 1356499109276.png-(6 KB, 233x262, Taola.png)
6 KB
Taola
A distant relative to the Freolas further south, Taolas are trees topped with a cluster of cup-shaped leaves. They sport 3-5 trunks splitting at the base of the tree. They usually reach up to 8 meters (26 feet) in height.

Asexually produces via spores.

And that's it.

i expanded upon the stalckar.

The Khalckar is a smaller, more aggresive version of the Stalckar, less powerful but more enduring. It populates the regions of the taiga which have less prey then the areas where Stalckar hunt. Khalkar will normally attack most everything, even things stronger then it, but it will know when to stop fighting and start running.

There is no target for a species to evolve too (unless you have one you personally want a creature to reach, but then you a free able to make it do that)

>They asexually produce via spores which they rely on insects to spread.
>Asexually.
>Via spores.
That can't be right. Spores means dealing with other individuals and then means mixing genomes which falls under the sense of sexed reproduction even if the male and female organs are one only thing ( i guess it's what you meant). Then it's hermaphroditism but it's still sexual.
Asexual reproduction consists of a cloning of the mother cell like bacteria or plants that reproduces by cuttings.

The Root Resels root system continues to become more and more complex. They now begin to use their roots to exert rudimentary control smaller animals corpses. The only known cases of this are a few Sull bodies that the Root Resel grew in. The body can only be used for a short period of time, since the digestive enzymes break down the body rather rapidly, and at the current moment, only Sull can be used since their exoskeleton helps to keep the body intact.
The Root Resel use this to travel closer to other bodies or plant themselves closer to the living areas of other animals.

Such caste-like separation could possibly result from a form of sexual dimorphism gone awry, like the difference between the two types of male cuttlefish. Here, instead of crossdressing, it results in a testosterone-laden male that emits stress-reducing pheromones.

See, it's sort of half-male, in that before, only females released pheromones, to indicate the start of their estrus cycle, but these critters start female in the womb, so they emit pheromones, but then the temperature changes, forcing a gender change (like alligator eggs, whose gender is determined by temperature), possibly due to migration. So the body amps the fetus up on testosterone to compensate. A take-charge, horomonal mess of a furlong that engenders a sort of sense of safety in other furlongs. A born alpha.

>>22232095
A small number of larger, more intimidating furlong not only grants the multitudes of furlong protection, but also serves as a distraction so they can escape if need be. This would bear the appearance of noble sacrifice, when in actuality, the big ones don't really do much else.

As the Red Pozen starts to take over the land, specimens of greater and greater size start to be encountered, as 1/10 new Red Pozen growths across the landscape grow to around a meter in height.

These new Red Pozen plants begin to push out huge numbers of spores which are carried on the wind and on animals, resulting in more Red Pozen growth across the landscape.

Acres of land in certain areas become infested with Red Pozen growths of varying size, rendering these areas inaccessible to predators. However, most mammals cannot survive in these zones as with heavy Pozen concentration due to the poisonous nature of the plant, which when concentrated in an area can kill even large creatures.

The genders continue to take different pathways. Now only the females of the Spotted Rammel create herds. Here they raise their young. The bigger males live a solitary life, while the smaller ones travel in packs made of 2-3 animals. When the mating season approaches, the big males fight each other for small territory patches. The better patches tend to be better places for displaying. The males do a ritual dance when a herd of females appear alongside the patches. If a male is found attracitve, some females spend a few days in the given patch for mating. This is the time, when the smaller males may strike, and try to steal a few matings for their own. These male groups cooperate to trick the resident bigger male for one of them to have a chance at scoring.

Thread is far from dead man.
I for one, have loads of ideas for evos. Here, have this one:

Some stalckars, start using their acidic vomit as a weapon, spitting it on their victim's eyes, nose and skin to cause pain and disorientation that helps the stalckar to finish off the victim easier.
Eventually, these spitting stalckars diverge into their own species, separate from the main lineage and the new grasshopper stalckars.
The spitters utilize ambush tactics to get their prey, stalking their victim for hours, and waiting for the moment to strike.
When they attack, they first emit small, clicking noises, that raise the attention of their victim, and as it turns it's head to scan it's surroundings for danger, the stalckar spits towards it's eyes, blinding it. It then pounces the prey, and quickly strikes it with it's deadly claws.

In areas where there are few insects, some of the climbing frowgs have to resort in augmenting their diet with leafs of their home trees. Eventually, they develop strong jaws that make leaf munching much more easier. These stronger jaws also allow them to kill stronger prey, such as juvenile stalckars. This is helped by their slight size increase.

Their coloration also darkens, in order for them to better blend in to their environment. These frowgs also have started forming some social structures, mainly related to their breeding. A group of frowgs lay their eggs all on the same branch, and then guard it together against threats. Their electric shocks and painful bites are usually enough to drive off predators from their eggs.
Their communal behavior is also exhibited when they gang up on small predators, that they alone would be unable to kill.

I officially declare this. Even if person does have tripcode it doesn't automatically mean he is person who causes threads to be bad. Yeah some of his evolutions might be somewhat awkward/clumsy but it is understandable as he is new to this. Yes he seems to have bad temper and might be a bit too protective with his creations but that can be changed by tutoring and helping him.(not calling him names) Sure he might be young. or perhaps not. we don't know and we have no right to start guessing. The Brown Furlong continues to hunt their preferred source of food, the Pink Frowgs. They develop a thick fur covering to assist in turning aside the bites of the Frowgs, as well as insulating during the cold winter months. The horn nubs expand into a bone plate that covers their forehead, allowing them to bash aside the Frowgs near them.

I can't remember the term for it but if there are too many predators compared to prey their numbers will stay low as they have no food. This is why such scenario would be unlikely.

Just having a fun idea and going with it, I'd say. Compared to some other creatures, these "dragons" are quite tame. Slizers are massive worm-like creatures which spit acid and have a bladed exoskeleton. There are mushrooms that spray flesh-devouring spores on another continent. Just a little south, toward the desert, there are jet-wasps.There's even an empire of space-faring bird people.

There have been both brilliant and dumb things over the course of this game. The trick, is to get them all to work.

Their eyes also become far more keen, and their coloration becomes darker so they can blend into the shadows from where they strike.

A vicious, perhaps cruel evolution emerges from the baseline stacklars.

These fellows have lost their claws, and gained proper front feet, which makes them a great deal faster. They now rely entirely on their mandibles for catching prey, but they have a different method for killing. Once a member of this species catches hold of prey, it bites a hole in the poor animal, and then sticks its long tongue down the hole. The tongue is covered in sharp, jagged little knobs, and tipped with a nasty hook. The predator will hook inside its prey with tip of the tongue, then trash about, cutting up the insides of the prey with those knobs. Then, it will let its prey go, keeping up with it till it bleeds out either interanlly from all the cuts, or externally from the big gash.

Call these crazies Thrashlars.

No love for the Taolas? Let's fix that.

Many Taolas in the extreme north experience a great problem if they take in too much water. If it gets too cold, water inside them will turn to ice, expand and crack the bark and damage the insides of the tree. This problem was so great for several decades, that a new species emerged after most other Taolas died. During the winter, their bark softens, allowing the water to freeze and expand, thus preventing serious damage to the Taola

The root resels expand in size gorging themselves upon the flesh of their dead hosts. Their hair like roots increase in number, allowing for a rudimentary system of muscles to be formed. Their enzymes now have a cycle of activity, spiking when the plant latches into a host, to allow the corpse to be hollowed out and then becoming more dormant as the plant uses the body to travel to a new location. This causes the Root Resels to engage in a habit much like eating where they will pick up dead matter through orifices (usually the mouth) and put it into the body cavity where it then digests the matter.

Another side effect of this Red Pozen consumption was that the dragon lost one of it's five legs, which actually presented an evolutionary advantage over their cousins the black dragons, as they still had 5 legs and thus always had one extra leg getting in their way. The Burlongs have continued to become more adept at digging, their front claws becoming more spade-like and their tails shrinking to little more than a nub. Their eyes have grown larger to accomidate the decreased light from their subterranean homes.

Black Rowgans: retconned up to being Doberman-sized predatory salamanders. >>22233222
Purple Rowgans: retconned to being the shy herbivorous mutation of Black Rowgans.
