Northern breed of Stalcker that no longer hibernates during winter. The Norstalck has a sac of fat on its back, covered in bristly hairs, which it uses to both conserve energy and use while it forages on plantlife and burrowed grubs in the earth. Its claws have become more rounded and clublike for easier locomotion through rougher terrain, resulting in the loss of previously predatory nature. The abdomen is also enlarged, due to fatty deposits also underneath the exoskeleton. The hairy underbelly is thick and matted, which allows the Norstalck to hide away fragments of food for later consumption. The species is notable for preening this fur extensively.

So tree furlong adapt greater over time their necks pivoting lower on their shorter skulls and their flexible tails used for climbing become longer and more dextrous. Also, their hind legs attain greater strength and shape allowing them to climb better. During mating season the males these Longtail tree furlong occasionally stand upright on their powerful hind legs and slash at each other with their fore claws in sometimes deadly competitive battles.

an off shoot of the Regal Sea Furlong, Know as the Emperor Seallong, develops a very thick layer of blubber as well as degenerated tusks and tail spikes that have become more fluke like in shape to aid swimming. The Emperor Seallong spend the majority of it's life lazily floating in shallow coastal waters kept warm by its excessive blubber and consuming any organism it can manage to consume. Majorly this consist of common small aquatic animals but the Emerpor Seallong is surprisingly nimble underwater for a creature it's size and is still capable of hunting larger prey. Seallongs are social animals always seen in at least groups of three but sometimes up to seven. However, Males are incredibly territorial and will not abide another male floating in his waters.

You grav any creature or plant and evolve it, adding a feature or changing color or whatever. Creature can be either a direct evolution or a branch(As the original creature stays and continues evolve it's own path). That's what I got from it, at least.
>>
>>22244546
yep. pick a creature (I'll hopefully compile something later) and evolve it. If you feel it needs more defenses, add them! Could be doing alpha predator better, make it better! but try to keep it small and gradual changes, with a degree of realism.
>>22244584
anyone can edit any creature at any time. and yeah, you can declare a creature a branch from the line you are working on if you like it, but also have another idea and want to keep both around. Branches are encouraged because they add diversity.

The spotted rammels developing a more complex exoskeleton and bigger horns, they need more saline components than their cousins.
They start feeding on more saline grounds, therefore, the species moves on the rocky shores.

They also begin to develop a stronger bind with the larvae feeding them by vomiting a bit of predigester food to help their growth.

The great effectiveness of the Draykons has caused a big lowing on some prey populations that started to adopt migratory behaviours in order to keep a sufficient food intake to keep a stable evolutions.
This caused other predators to adapt in order to fight this apex predator.
The more successful were the spitting stalckers (let's call them spitkers, shall we?).
They developed a compound eye that allows them a better detection of rapid movements and to see on a larger array of wavelengths which extends to UV allowing them to spot the draykons even in the dark night .
Their sack of venom grown also a bit to grant them a bigger intake of it in order to spread more on these tough critters.

For the benefit of Mr.Molden, here is a pic containing the living fauna/flora that hasn't been posted already into the thread.
The Hand-drawn images are all subspecies of Pozen
The Vole/squirrel thing are Burlongs. Burrowing Furlongs. They hunt Stalckars and take over their nests as homes.
Below that is the False Bluva. Mobile electric plants, the tongue is a large sensory organ that detects electical pulses sent by lifeforms. the smaller yellow bits are organs that release electrical currents to zap nearby prey.
Below that is the Taola, A tree like plant that has grown to have it's cup like leaves inside. The yellow stuff is clouds of spores they release to propagate their species.
Below THAT is the Poisonous Resel.
to it's right is the Yellow Bluva. literally yellow flowers.
The orange carrot like things are Red Pozon. Highly poisonous, these are an invasive species that will use clouds of toxic spores to drive out competition and predators.
Above the Red pozen are a species of climbing Frowgs that have developed a hand like appendage on their tail to assist in climbing.
Above that is the Sauna Pozen. The drooping bits are used to heat water within the cup during the winter. Some species of insects and animals will take shelter in there during the winter.
The picture above shows some of the Sulls who take shelter within the cups.
Drunken sulls are depicted to the right of the Sauna Pozen. They consume the Alcohol produced by the Chartree through their proboscis like mandibles.
below that are a species of Sull that have more binocular vision as well as eyelids.
Below that is the species of Sull that subsides on the Red-Pozon, developing an immunity to the toxins produced. Their webbing has become toxic as a result.
next to that are the Red-Ramels, they live within the Pozon Fields
Below that is a species of Ramel that has developed a spike on their tail.

Next are the Stalckar species:
The Kalckar, a more agressive subspecies of Stalckar
Then there are Stalckars who developed spines on the lower portion of their claws.
Above that are Stalckars with spines on the ends of their claws
Then to the right is Stalckars who spit digestive acid
Above that are Thrashlars. Their bladed tongues are used to carve into prey.
Next to it are their burrowing counterparts
The little purple fluff ball are purple Fluzzpuffs. They live off of the toxic berries produced by Root Resel, laying eggs in the corpses the Root Resel inhabit.
Above the Stalckars is the Char Tree. within the cup shaped leaves the plant produces an alcohol, which grows more potent as the temperature drops.
On the Char Tree's left is a species of Resel that have burrowed to Bedrock.
On it's right is the Root Resel. They subside off of dead animals by secreting digestive enzymes. They use their muscle like root systems to inhabit the exoskeletons of prey and use the bodies to spread to new areas, planting themselves in more dead bodies.
Below that are the Assassin Stalckar. These guys hide in the darkness and ambush prey.
Below that are the Aquatic Furlongs. These guys have the Normal species and then the Kamen species. The Kamen are a form of sexual Dimorphism that creates a third gender. These guys are sterile and exist to defend their familial groups. This is seen as altruistic because they will sacrifice themselves to ensure the survival of the group.

I might have missed some, but I think that is all of them, save the ones already shown in thread.

The mutant gene that caused the first of the Pitcher Pozen to split from its ancestors still lurks and has recently caused another drastic change.
A handful of Pitchers suffer gigantism and grow to monstrous size, their hoods sometimes reaching 4 foot tall and their bells are often wider still.
These Maw Pitchers also possess thermogenic combs in their cups, which run on overdrive compared to the normal Pitcher Pozen, resulting in a constant pool of ~10°C water, even in the coldest winters.

The Sulls who take shelter in the Pitcher Pozen during the winter make good use of these new mutants, and the Maw Pitchers benefit from the nutrients in their leavings.

the Burlongs continue to adapt to their subterranean life. Their forelimbs become stockier, allowing for more efficient digging. Their snout has also shrunk to allow for their limbs to dig better.
They have developed an interesting hunting habit, where the Burlongs will deliberately create deep tunnels near the surface so that if something heavy moves across it, the limb that falls in will either sprain or break. The then hobbled animal is set upon by the waiting Burlongs.

ramels: purple dots are a cluster of exposed sensory membranes that detect frilla (a type of tree) spores. Frilla tree sporing can have subtle influence over many creatures of primordial. The trees themselves gain a quiet sort of sentience as they grow in size, and slowly seek to manipulate that which is around them with the spores. Ramels have evolved to be particularly receptive to this.

In the far frozen wastes of the north the ice climber ramels have proliferated. Ice breakers will pummel the frozen ground with their face to dig up roots, and get at soft soil which they will also eat. Ice climbers develop a longer tail which lets them get around easier. A deviate off shoot of the ramels manifests itself in the form of the blood drinker. They feed by ramming their horn into another creature and consuming their fluids through holes in the horn.
>>
As Prey animals are few and predators thrive, only the most adaptive ramels survive. With constant attacks the dumb ones will fall and those packs that use teamwork to defend temselves have better chance to survive. Red ramels overall intelligence has slightly improved from dumb animal to normal animal. When defending the pack, those with best defensive properties are most useful.

Ramels are Omnivores
>>
>>22247394
ramels are not herbivores, they are omnivores, that will go so far as to eat and process dirt to extract minerals for their plates, bones and horns. Make no mistake, many species eat flesh. Long term players know the blood drinker, a mutation that can happen in the ramel line. Blood drinkers are an aberration, but will reproduce with others of their kind. Most other ramels shun them to the outskirts of the herd, but value them during the hunt as a living spear.

Their fore flippers also become more muscular and rigid for better maneuverability in the open waters. Their fluke tailspikes also adapt to a superior size and shape.

Socially the Baleen and Sifting Seallong are very unlike their Emperor cousins. They're non territorial and freely travel amongst other males. However, while the Sifting Seallong still travel in groups the Baleen Seallong travel mostly in mating pairs and with offspring. Only briefly do they socialize with other families when encountered.

File: 1356631603242.png-(32 KB, 800x600, Migratory frowg.png)
32 KB
In the forests and plains closer to the wast arid desert of the continent, the brown frowg populations became increasingly nomadic over the generations, due to the dry seasons depriving them plant life. This, and the competition against other herbivores eventually resulted in migratory behavior for these frowgs.
They started following the rivers up north during the dry seasons, and back south again during the wet seasons. Their small size made them vulnerable however, and thus they slowly grew larger over the generations. Their larger size allowed them to better defend themselves, and also hunt bigger prey. This allowed them to finally become full omnivores, instead of just herbivores with predatory tendencies.

Other physical changes to them are in their legs. As they grew in size, and they started travelling long distances, their front limbs grew ever more stronger, while the two middle pairs assumed the role of mostly just supporting their body. Their last limb pair atrophied into small arm like appendages that now serve a new purpose. This purpose is related to their breeding. The migratory frowgs don't stay put in one place long enough for the new generation of young to grow old enough to join the pack. Because of this, the adults carry the young and the eggs with them. The small arms are used to tend the young and the eggs that are held in the moist "pouch" they form from their tail.

File: 1356640371856.png-(23 KB, 800x600, Stalack.png)
23 KB
A new species of stalckars emerges, that has evolved to kill other stalckar species.
They originate from an isolated valley, that was almost completely inhabited by various stalckar breeds, only disturbed by the occasional passing herd of ramels.
In this valley, prey was scarce, and the stalckars had to feed on each other.
The stalacks were born in this pot of evolutionary competition. In order to better compete against other stalckar breeds, the stalacks became bulkier and more heavily armored, but most importantly, they developed a leg structure that allowed them to stand on their hind legs, and thus tower over other stalckars. This advantage allowed them to deliver deadly blows to the vulnerable backs of the other stalckars (some sort of bladders?) which made them easy to kill.

Very quickly, the Stalacks became the dominant stalckar breed of the valley, and thus they started to spread out, seeking out their next favorite prey after stalckars, the ramels.

The main trait of the Stalckars are their heavy armor, that covers their whole body. Even their head is covered by a "helmet" of sorts, that protects their vulnerable acid glands. The helmet also works as a display piece, the brightly colored "horns" are used to attract females and intimidate competitors by the males. Other trait is their ability to stand upright, which they do when they are fighting against something, so they can use their claws as well. When they are running, they move on 4 legs. In both "stances" they readily use their sticky acid spit as a weapon.
The Stalacks are somewhat social. They usually hunt alone, but when a ramel herd is near, the stalacks gather up in hunting packs in order to bring down the mighty and heavily armored ramels. Successful ramel hunts often also result in breeding, as the females are more receptive to mating after eating their their fill.

In some furlong populations, the males competed for females with head bashing. As time went on, the males with the most prominent bone plates on their face became more successful. Due to this sexual selection, these furlongs eventually developed a bony helmet, whose primary purpose is to protect the male's head when it bashes it against other males.
Females of this race also have the bony helmets, as the adaptation proved to be beneficial in other ways as well. It provided the furlong with increased protection, a new weapon, and a new way to gather food. The helmet could be used to crack the thick bark of the frilla trees, and thus open an access to the countless little critters living underneath the bark.

(I could use a better name for these things. Helmet furlong sounds kinda stupid.)

Posting this vid in order to make clearer how the stalacks hunt ramels.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQTW2vKdKlc
>start at around 5 mins.

Basically, the stalacks are solitary species, that rely on ambush tactics on their hunts. Though they evolved to be good at killing other stalckar species, but after the species spread out from the valley from where they originate from, they started also hunting other species as well. Furlongs, sulls, etc. These ambush hunters aren't exactly picky with their food, anything that isn't larger than they are is fair game to them, in most cases.

When they hunt ramels however, they have to team up with each other. Even one adult ramel is more than a match for a stalack, and thus, in order for the stalacks to successfully bring down a ramel, they have to work together. First step is separating the victim from it's herd, usually the stalacks pick old or sick ramels. Then, they have to exhaust the beast, harass it for hours, spray it's hard shell with acid and make quick stabs in openings of it's armor. The process can take days, and when the beast finally succumbs, the stalacks quickly fall into anarchy, the most powerful ones eating their fill first, while the others fight for the right to feed.
During this feeding frenzy, the stalacks also compete for breeding rights, as the females, (who are usually the largest individuals) are most welcoming to mating when they have eaten themselves full.

Might I offer a suggestion? Try making the Korobushkans less humanoid. Add in that hunch they're supposed to have as Schwrims, maybe put the carapace back on them and add some ethnic differences
>>

They do have some ethnic differences. The Korobushka have smooth carpaces while most Upright Bladeshwirm have spiked ones.

They have cultural differences as well, split among clans. The Sergei (for example) often tuck their blades inside their sleeves, while the other clans more often leave them out.

As for making them more humanoid, I tend to do that to make them easier to draw.

The migratory frowgs continue to evolve to suit their migratory lifestyle.
As generations pass, the front limbs of the frowgs become more and more dominant in their movements, the other leg pairs only serving to support and stabilize the creature.
These leg pairs have continued to atrophy now only the second pair serves as legs, though many of the frowgs barely even need them. The middle limb pair has evolved into graspers, while the last pair of arms are now completely specialized for tending the young that are held in the tail "pouch".
It is likely that in the future, the Knuckle walking frowgs also known as Knogos, will start using only their strong front limbs for walking, as the other limbs continue to atrophy and evolve into new roles.

Other changes to the Knogos are their increased size. As the knogos herds became more common in the plains, they needed to be bigger in order to defend themselves properly. Their packs have also grown larger, and more socially complex, which has resulted in the development of rudimentary vocal communication. To support this, the knogos have developed a simple, bladder like organ on their snout, that amplifies the sounds they make.
They have also gained sensory hairs, which help them to balance their movements.

Usually, a Knogos pack is led by a matriarch female with a "court" of sisters that help her keep the pack together. The pack itself is composed of children of these females, and few males who joined from other packs. Male Knogos are somewhat larger, and more aggressive than the females, and they tend to compete with each other for dominance in the pack. Rogue male packs also wander across the plains, in search of larger to they may join.

ice breakers get a harder head that they use to pound through ice, and sometimes rock. Ice climbers develop an interesting extension to their feet that they often use to get better purchase onto cliff faces. The Blood drinkers develop larger horns on the males that are used extensively during mating season to attempt and flip over their rival. The male will hold the defeated on it's back with an exposed belly until a female comes along and plunges her horn into the defeated, consuming his life blood. This signifies her acceptance of the offering and willingness to mate. Males who have larger more impressive offerings are clearly the stronger better partner then those with lesser conquests, as they also have to restrain the defeated for the duration it takes a female to find, inspect, and accept. It is not uncommon for Males who win a battle too easily to seek out a more worthy opponent.

As it was predicted, the Knogos eventually stop using their second limb pair as legs completely, becoming fully bipedal creatures. The second pair of limbs develop into arms, much like the third limb pair. The Knogos use these two pairs of arms to carry stuff around, mostly food and their young.
What allowed the knogos to become fully bipedal was the continued evolution of their sensory hairs, that granted them increasingly improved balance. Though not exceptionally fast, the knogos can still run very well on their arms, make sharp turns and long leaps, without loosing their balance.

Their vocal organs have also developed, the noise bladder has grown larger, and more complex, and they have also developed thicker, and more muscular lips, that allow them to both manipulate the sounds they make better, as well as produce new sounds. This in turn has increased the complexity of their communication, and social structures, which has necessitated their brains to catch up. They are now slightly smarter than their ancestors were in general, and socially far more flexible.

Knogos are omnivorous, feeding on both plants of the plains, as well as small critters, such as furlongs. Their main predators are various stalck and ramel species. The Knogos can't really defend themselves against these armored and dangerous predators, and thus they instead rely on their keen senses to spot the threats before they get too close. The Knogos are fast enough to outrun most stalck speicies, who almost universally rely on ambush tactics in their hunting. Ramels in general are also too sluggish to catch a healthy Knogos.

Their "tongue" develops glands on it's tip, that excrete sweet smelling nectar, that attracts prey. When the Shock Maw detects a prey with it's sensory tentacles, it lashes out it's tongue towards the victim, channeling it's electricity trough the tongue to the prey as it wraps it's tongue around.
The prey is then dragged to the plant, shocked to death if it is still alive, and then consumed by the plant.

In the arid plains close to the desert, some ramel populations were forced to either migrate in their search of plant life to eat during the dry season or try their luck in hunting down other critters.
The ones who adopted the later strategy began to diverge from the mainline of ramels, they became smaller, their armor lighter and their limbs longer. These changes allowed these new hunters to be much faster than their ancestors.
Their face blade also changed over the generations. Instead of being an axe like blade, it became a stabbing weapon, that these ramels use to maul their prey.

These predators hunt down various smaller critters, knogos, other ramel breeds, as well as various sandoni creatures that also populate the arid plains in where they live. When hunting other ramels, they use their size to their advantage, outmanouvering their larger and clumsier cousins, and stabbing them in weakly armored areas like their stomach with their face blade.

A splinter species of the Knogos moves to live in the forests. There they slowly move to mostly herbivorous diet, eating the leafs of plants, taollas especially. Eventually, this results in them growing very tall, so they can reach the tops of taller taollas.
These tall knogos move slowly in small family groups trough the forests, feeding on taolla leafs. They rely on their keen senses to avoid predators, as they lack any real means of defending themselves. They will run away rather than fight, but if they are cornered, they use their strong legs to kick their attackers. Such kicks can often be lethal.

The change in lifestyle has reduced the intelligence of this knogos species. They mostly communicate with each other trough simple howls they emit from their snout bladder.

Instead of growing a flower, they develop a pod filled with their spores ,that begins to excrete sweet and sugary scent, that draws curious herbivores to it. The herbivores more often than not, eat the pod, which protects the spores within it as it passes trough the digestive track of the herbivore.
Usually, the pod opens in the last stages of it's passage trough the digestive system, releasing the spores, which now have a ready access to fertilizers, to which they can root to.
As the animal defecates, the spores have already started growing in it's poop, giving them a solid head start to their development.

Another knogos split off.

While some Knogos moved to the forests and adopted the role of a leaf eater, others began grazing on the plants of the plains.

The pygmy knogos evolved from knogos populations who lived in areas with very little food, other than the plants available.
To survive, they became smaller, so that they would need less energy, and their bodies became more efficient at feeding on plant life.
As time passed on, they diverged into a new species, that spread forth across the plains.
They are small herbivores, who live in large herds for increased protection.
These herds are ever watchful for potential threats, there is always at least a dozen watchful pairs of eyes monitoring the perimeter around the herd. When a threat is spotted, the guards will unleash a loud shriek from their sound bladder, that alarms the whole herd, which will then flee with surprising speed. The pygmy knogos can run faster than other knogos species, but they still aren't the fastest creatures around. They can however make quite agile leaps and bounce around unpredictably when they are being pursued, potentially confusing the predator.

Ice climber's third toe actually lets it's fragile feet conform to the land better. The ice breaker gets a little beefier, and it's tail becomes a proper maul for defending against the Mauler ramel, who counters via developing larger lungs and heart. The exoskeleton could not grow down, so organs are housed in a sort of reverse chest. Blood drinker males continue to develop more elaborate horns for their displays and hunts. Horns gain tines that often shear off and regrow. They are useful in hunting as they will get stuck in prey, slowing them down, or in the eyes of their competition.

For possibly both races, on the tree frowg maximus, It's lower jaw is actually fused to the ribcage and does not move, but the skull itself, is encased in muscle and tendon, and will move quite freely. they have very little upward strength if their head is being restrained, but tremendous downward force for biting. Holuns (helmet furlongs) begin following forest Knogos for their superior senses. The knogos will often notice predators long before the Holuns, giving the holuns advanced warning of danger

Over time the headbutting between males became more and more vicious, and eventually it resulted in males gaining severe concussions, and becoming useless. Now only the males with fewer bone on their faces survived. This lead to the "helmets" being reduced to only the tops of Holun heads, which they still use to break frilla bark. After this, the males in the Holuns develop to be larger, and more aggresive, fighting each other for mates. They also use their new strength to fight the predators that come after the Knogos and the Holuns. This leads to a nice symbiotic relationship between the Holuns and the Forest Knogos. Knogos can't fight, but Holuns can, and the Knogos themselves develop to be more open and friendly towards their furry friends, often issuing helpful bleating sounds in the direction of predators, thus alerting their protectors of the danger.

Hmm, I like the nostril idea. It makes them neatly alien. However, their sense of smell is probably located in another place, maybe on their tongue? Some sort of combination between taste and smell senses?

The rib-cage idea doesn't fit the knogos however, seeing how they have flexible necks.

Anyways, here is another knogos species.
The hunter knogos is almost completely predatory knogos species, that evolved from knogos populations who had ample source of meat at their disposal, such as beloduns and suls. Turns out that the Knogos legs are pretty powerful weapons for trampling on smaller critters.
Over time, this population diverged into a new species, which was faster, taller and more suited for hunting.
Their legs grew longer and their posture changed to better suit running. They started using their second limb pair to grab on their prey, while they ate them.
Their teeth became razor sharp, and their tongue grew longer so they could constrict their prey, or even pull out critters from their burrows.

Despite their hunter status, they are still prey to the apex predators of the plains, the mauler ramels and the stalacks, against who these knogos have few ways to defend themselves, other than fleeing.
They move in small packs, with strict hierarchies. The alpha pair rules the pack, and internal disputes are settled with ritualistic fights, that involve loud howling which aims to intimidate the opponent to back off.

Btw, all knogos species still have the electrical organs, but the importance of these organs has decreased over the ages. They can no longer produce sufficient enough charge to be used as a weapon, instead, they produce an electric field that works as another sense for the knogos. Usually this sense is used to monitor the movements of other members of the pack. This is most apparent when the knogos packs are running, as they almost never collide with each other.

This new way of reproduction proves to be successful, and the new pod bluvas spread quickly across the plains.
They continue to adapt to this method of reproduction. The pods start growing nutrient rich and sweet "meat" inside of themselves, that further encourages the herbivores to eat these pods.
The spores are now contained in hard capsules, that are resistant to the digestive juices, only opening up in the final stages of the digestive process, releasing the spores inside of the colon of the herbivore. Like in their ancestors, these spores will take root in the poop, and are already growing the moment they are defecated out.

The bluvas also start sprouting additional pod stalks, for increased reproductive success.

I also added a couple minor details to the male and female. Now there's a difference, mainly the males having slightly longer front flippers, slightly longer horns, and a bony nub on their nose, due to the kamenfurlong being a female with a fuckton of testosterone. The female has a pale shape around the dark shape of her eye, corresponding to the kamenfurlong's pink shape, because the kamenfurlong start female.

In some holun populations, the bony "helmet" continued to develop further, instead of disappearing like it did in the populations who began co-operating with the tall knogos species.

This helmet evolution was due to their increased feeding on the critters living underneath frilla bark, on the bark itself, roots and due to the protection it offered against predators, such as the deadly stalacks.
The ancestors of the crusher holuns fed heavily on roots and bark, becoming more herbivorous instead of carnivores. Their helmet evolved into a tool they use to crush bark, and dig trough the soil and tangled hard roots towards the younger, fresher roots.
Their new diet resulted in a need for a bigger digestive system, that could handle all the frilla toxins, and over time, these holuns themselves grew larger. This, and the weight of their helmet also caused them to grow stronger as well. This increase in weight forced them out of trees, and they now live on the forest floor, eating plants and occasional smaller critters they can catch. Their long claws are tools they use to both peel away bark from the trees, as well as to defend themselves.

Despite their fearsome appearance, the crusher holuns are actually quite peaceful creatures, who spend most of their time eating, or resting and digesting their food. The competitions between the males have mellowed down to showcases of strength, instead of actual fights, due to the damage adult males could potentially do to each other if they actually fought.

Also, I should note that the "skul helmet" isn't actually shaped like the head of the holun, in either holun species. It is a helmet, the face underneath it lacks the same proportions. I say this mostly because the holuns in this picture have their snouts looking exactly like the helmet they once had.

The Orangulong develop more acquiring an even more muscular build and adopt a posture of mostly knuckle walking interspersed with fully upright movement while on the ground.

Socially they develop a pack group system with an Alpha Male and Female. The Alpha male grows large facial plates and an exceptionally large underchin. The Alpha female grows large facial spikes.

Naturally the Alpha Male is the desire of all the females of whom he has his pick. While the Alpha Male attempts to mate with whomever he pleases the Alpha Female naturally desires only the Alpha Male for his strength and virility above all others. She spends most her time birthing young, violently fighting off other females from mating with the Alpha Male and hunting for meat to feed her full time carnivorous diet. Often these things overlap.

The Alpha Female is the most terrifying creature in the pack and direct interaction is often highly avoided.

ok take two. So again, this is just suggestion, but the Knogos and this brand of frowg may not have a Bone spine in their neck, instead being a very flexible mass of muscle, tendons, etc. Both the skull and the jaw can move independently allow for very large bites and the prior ability of a strong bite with a weak opening force....hey...wait...drop that rock...some knogos, not entire species, just individuals, will occasionally use rocks to smash things. or even throw them.
>>
>>22288293

Having no spine would make these frowgs very vulnerable to attacks on their head. Also, the bone structure partly supports the weight of their skull. They can have the same effect of extremely large bites by having very flexible jaws, like snakes.
Though, I fail to see an evolutionary reason for it, at least for the knogos species.

I would like that we would once again try to implement the map resource idea again. There was the idea of using a grid overlay to the map, as a tool to both determine the movement speed of groups and the location of resources.

Also, the question if the Knogos should be made sapient is still left open. I would kinda like to make them sapient, mostly to explore how they would develop with their alien physiology. I do realize that there are already very many sapient races, so if people don't want them to be sapient, I won't make them.

In order to compete against other plants, some taollas start reproducing in a new way. They grow clones of themselves from their root network, in addition to releasing spores to the wind. This new tactic allows even one successful taolla tree to produce a whole grove of taollas in just few decades. It also allows taollas to firmly entrench themselves to a region, once they have started growing there. These taolla groves are dense, the trees growing very close to each other, blocking out almost all sunlight, their roots connected to each other, sharing nutrients. The whole grove is basically a single taolla organism.

New tree update.
As some yeast seek for eukaryotes for auxotrophy, some come to colonize the ressel tree and are pleased by the warmth beneath the bark.
These yeasts are able to hydrolyse sugars from the sap that the tree was unable to use with some paticular enzymes of them.
The heat is used to fuel an alcoholic fermentation process and loads of ethanol are released in the sap. The ethanol is dragged by the vegetal cell that use it as oxydation fuel.
The high levels of oxygens allows them a very efficient respiration.
The trees comes to grow better. Yeasts be happy too.

Guardian Holuns, or Goluns, lose their helmets completely, but gain a new way to show senioirity. In males, elders will posses tails with bright golden-brown tips. These coloration of the the golden-tails is linked to increased testosterone production, caused by a male dominating whatever pack he is in. The fuzzy hairs eventually start covering the whole Furesel tree, which allows it to conserve it's heat during the winters extremely well. (the hairs fall off during summers, to prevent the plant from overheating.)
This inner warmth allows these trees to grow longer and wider leafs, that would have frozen during the winter before. This allows the tree to photosynthesize better, and throughout all seasons.

During the winters, these forests of shivering, heat generating fuzzy evergreen trees form a strange mini-biome in the cold north. The forests are humid and somewhat warm, even during the winter, due to the heat these trees release. The soil rarely freezes, and puddles of water and melting snow lay here and there, and the whole forests is clouded in perpetual mist of steam.
These warm forests form an ideal place for animals to spend their winter in, both predators and prey. These animals in turn, help the Furessels by fertilizing the ground with their feces, as well as by eating their berries and spreading the trees around.

I assume that the normal holuns still exist, seeing how these new ones occupy a different niche than their ancestors did.
The helmet became so prominent in the holuns, due to the protection it offered in both the fight between the males and against predators. It also doubled as a tool to break bark, so I assume that the Goluns feed on other stuff instead of insects underneath the frilla bark.
Also, the helmet was never an accurate portrayal of the holun's actual face. Underneath it, they probably resembled some sort of monkey/squirrel, looking something like this:
>>
File: 1356923178212.png-(43 KB, 800x600, Smart Knogos.png)
43 KB
>>22288293

The usage of rocks as primitive tools spreads around in the populations it first appeared in very quickly. This new behavior allowed the baseline knogos to remain competitive against the other knogos species, who had specialized to certain environmental niches. They could use their rock tools to utilize new sources of food, by using them to hunt down prey better, bash bones to gain access to the nutrient rich marrow, breaking tree bark in order to eat insects and softer tree flesh underneath it and so on.

Eventually however, these "smart" knogos populations diverged themselves, into a new type of knogos, that outwardly has changed very little, besides the slight change in the shape of their skull. Inwardly however, they have changed considerably. The skull change is due to their brains growing in size, and complexity, and thus needing more space for themselves. This size growth was due to many factors, such as the improved nutrition, increased stimulus and the evolutionary pressure to be smarter, in order to understand the workings of their "tools" and make more of them.

Eventually, they developed additional tools to the rocks, such as slightly sharper rocks for cutting, rounder rocks for bashing, tree branches for whacking at stuff and splintered bone spikes for stabbing stuff.
They are by no means geniuses, but these smart knogos are capable of outwitting most of their natural enemies, to some degree at least. They are still preyed upon by many things, but they have taken their first steps at fighting back, and evolving out of their prey species role.

STAR WARS REFERENCE TIME
>>
Allright guys, if you want the Knogos to be tribal-ready, I can make it so. The Glud are probably extinct already, and so far the other Central sapients are focused in the desert, so the Knogos can develop in a kind of isolation. Probably kinda like the Burrahn, compared to the Nad'Lun, in terms of development.

Also, in the discussion thread, we can come up with small symbols for resources, so they can go on the Central gridmap easily. We'll brainstorm about resources further after this thread?
>>
>>22309237
Sounds good to me. Though the glund don't necessarily need to be extinct, their status as minor sentients, whose influence to other races is limited to fae like tricks to those who intrude to their marshes is good in my book.
Anyways, having a discussion thread after this one is a good idea. We need to prepare properly for the central civ/tribal game.

Alright, then lets begin. Listing races: Suzumo, Tentouz, Pusmal, Koburrog, Gorriog, Knogos.
---
Ill work on compiling a master image of the starters.
---
The map will come in two flavors. Player and GM. Coming back will be the travel tool which says how far a race can go in a day on optimal conditions. Player territory will be determined by what they explore vs what they can secure. Starting square will contain the symbol of the tribe, and each tribe will have a color associated with it. That color will form of the border of your explored territory.
---
The GM map will have points that contain resources. I plan on making it in photoshop with a few layers, one for the map and surface resources, one that is the player territory, and one layer that shows underground resources such as subterranean water, minerals, oils, etc. or perhaps just two side by side images.
>>
>>22312775
For the players, a starter image containing the race (with any ethnic differences), the tribal symbol, tribal name at a minimum. Including extra things like examples of tools, dress, weapons, shelter etc is a plus.
--
Listing starting tech will also be beneficial to the GM. I'm gonna need some help coming the previous tribal game for central, to gather info on the past factions and what they had. or at least a general overview and what they had natural 20's for, as that gives the prior factions some of their character.
---
When players start they will have a few choices, start fresh, or be a break away or component of an existing faction. The less people playing the faction, the more control you can choose to exercise over it. The only real factions that will be available to play in/as are the mountain kingdoms, or perhaps notrip's koburrog empire, though he needs to consent to such a thing.
>>
>>22312928
please feel free to clue me in on other potential starting factions. Players who start fresh can work with a blank slate, but will likely be at mud hut tech tier unless we can work out some sort of story.
Break away factions may retain elements of their previous factions tech or culture.

On the game, some rules that im gonna be working on, as well as the principal of the game.
-It is a setting builder, you cant win because that is not the objective. It is to have fun and build a world.
-Do not attempt to be the GM if you are not the GM. Chastising other players. correcting them constantly, being a fuck. it wont be tolerated.
-Rolls can be unlimited, but developments are spread across your civilization, not town by town. so it goes "rolling to develop watchtowers" not "rolling to build watchtowers at a,b,c,d," so on. That kind of rolling bogs down the GM with a lot of extra work. we do this for free and for fun.
-Add fluff to your rolls, I want to be entertained, brutal, but true.

I need some help refining the rules, they are mostly common sense by now, but they often end up needing repeating.
>>
>>22313223
The NPC factions. They are here and there, Im debating on minor ones being very amorphous and undefined, added as the game goes on or as players look for them.

The major factions pose a bit more challenge in handling them.

They are the major tribes from the last game, if no one chooses to play them. I need to to get conformation from nad on how active he will be able to be, but also how willing he is to play extra factions as I dont want to burden anyone. So in place of that, I could use notes. I wont be playing as a "PC" acting in pure GM capacity.
-- Messengers of a higher power
The "thickblood" suzumo exiles- either need them ran, or notes on how to run them, how they feel about their patron opening up the world to them, on their former kin, the godworms, the slaughters that the chodragons use to feed.
-- Traders from a foreign land
The Nad'lun Crimson slizer forces- A mix of Shrohan, Holori and Hoppas living on the coast, are they content to simply sit and collect amber, if so, thats awesome, they may hire other races to do that hard work for them in exchange for something "good."
-- Self appointed guardians
The Enclave navy- If a single tribe gets advanced enough and looks hard enough in the right place they may find the enclave. I am deliberately keeping them removed from central as much as possible.

------------
Central is by far the most primitive continent, its "fresh". There are god like entities between the godworms and chodragon creatures who have unknowable plans and machanations pulling at the strings of the little mortals, trying to get them to dance. Between the cold north, and the humid south lies an expansive desert. Stake your claim and carve out your place in the world.
>>
>>22313444

Details of the specific races will also be needed, how they see, how they feel, their senses, how they communicate, their physical capability, and basic values. For example, why would a tentouz ever care about inventing glue? they have sticky mucous. Why invent a flying machine? they can fly. its things like that. A flying home though, that makes sense. then it may need to move, so again, if it can be fluffed or explained its gold. im gonna get some sleep. feel free to discuss and add on.

The first tale of the Hastun:
"The land that shall bear our lives, shall be ours untill the end of time"
The colour shades that may mean this has not been worn for a long time on the hides of the pale remnants of the hastun.
But the words has not been forgotten, still inscribed deeply in the dormant memories since the beggining of the great starve.
The prophet of these words may still be living in the pack, as pale and as the others, no longer differenciabe from its pairs.
They have been guiding instinctively by this fix idea to seek for a more bounteous land.
Wandering and roaming unnoticed on the desert sky for decades, they have forgotten the way to be themselves.
But in a day, a green horizon appears, dawn to a new era.
The hastun catches a prey, feeds on it and awakes. Then he knows that he must stay awakened for ever.
A few hours past, and the entire tribe is back on its minds.
Their hides turns blue again, and then moving shades start to scatter around in tidal colour waves. The skin on their foreheads pulses and a sketch starts to design itself.
The words appear again: "The land that shall bear our lives, shall be ours untill the end of time" they become the sigil of the hastun.
All wear it, but then an other word, made of darker shades is formed. The word of their forgotten past, their lost origins.
This word becomes sense of obliviousness and sacrilege. Forgetting is forbidden.

The Hastun beggins somewhere at the edge of the jungle. They have no tech yet but have awaken their industrious minds to take to their new fief.

Behind the mouth, the food goes in a first stomach full of digestive acid produced by a liver/pancreas-like organ. The organic matter melts and the nutriments are directed to the lymphoïc system (it's not blood, it's a hemolymphoïc fluid thad does not carry oxygen).
The chime of all the unwanted matter then goes to a second stomach full of a methanogen archaebacteria flora (like cows but way tougher). This stomach is equipped with a valve that opens to spread the gas into the baloon.
At the bottom of the "balloon", all around the gas intake sprout, is a layer of neural cells.
These cells are able to synthetize thousands of different neuro-transmitter.
These organic molecules goes back and forth into the gas chamber where they then exist in two different form, normal and methylated (R and R-CH3) the methylation is a reduction of a CH4 molecule. This oxydation liberates H2 molecules that are known to burst in flames in contact with oxygen. that's why the baloon bursts in pierced.
When the methyled form comes back to the brain cells, it is interpreted as an information.
The brain works by interpretating the variation of partial pressure of each neuro-transmitter.
All around the chambers are disposed small neural glands linked to the lymphoïc system.
This allows to "save" some neuro transmitter in liquid phase when their partial presure becomes high in the chamber. This is basically their memory.
These glands are also able to deliver into the chamber foreign molecules that were taken in the stomach or synthetized by the organism or "saved" earlier.
These can be coloured molecules, bioluminescent molecules, toxins, neurotransmitters, etc.
This allows them to adapt their colour in order to communicate, confuse preys...
This system can also deliver into the back limbs to create the deadly bane-bubbles.
The back sprouts only deliver H2 surplus that bursts in contact with oxygen and then propulses the creature.
cont.

Their air holes acts directly as an interface to extract oxygen and have the sense of scent. The oxygen is carried in a secondary system of actual blood vessels. This system does not ever enter in contact with the gas chambers.
They have also a basical nervous system to control their limbs and the various valves scattered between the gas chambers and stomachs.
The back tentacle are carved by an extention of their stomach richly vascularized with hemolymph vessels and covered by mucus producing cells. That allows them to create acidic poisonous and flamable bane mucus.
The neuro transmitter and their receptors on the brain cells are randomly synthetized by random gene splitting (that's the immunoglobuline synthetisis way)
Then, like the antibodies, these receptor can randomly be sensible to some foreign molecule.
This molecule can temporally become a new "thought component".
In fact sentience of the tentouz depeds on their ability to absorb various foreign organic molecules in order to complexize their minds. A starving tentouz will become pale and get back to animal stage untill it can feed properly again to wake up its mind and have back access to its dormant memory.
The aging of the tentouz is very slow, allowing them to last many years even in the dormance stage.
The tentouz have a very low mechanical power in their limbs. They can't lift great weigts nor strike with strenght. However, its four oposed tentacle digits are veru dextrous.
The tentouz have the poorest audition. Their internal ear is alost entirely used for its balance keeping role.

Yeah, the Hitangan and the Hu-Raan could be added to the Major Powers list. Hitangan are good smiths and sculptors as well as proud fighters, while the Hu-Raan might be small but has architecture under their belt, as well as shaking off their species-wide curse of bad luck.
They could be trading partners or something.

Some sul populations under heavy pressure from predators slowly change to be faster. Their body shape becomes lither and legs longer, allowing them to skitter away from threats better.
This increased speed also allows them to occasionally run down, and overwhelm small creatures. This occasional predatory behavior eventually resulted in their mouth parts becoming better at rending flesh and their claws better at holding down prey.
For defense, these omnivorous suls use their sticky "web" sprayers. The substance is extremely adhesive, and foul smelling, which can usually deter most predators from attacking these suls more than once.

We were discussing about the tentouz tribe with sock and nongent and one thing leading to another we were wondering what would the main canopy tree be. Because the jungle or actually swamp was introduced as having a canopy. and also what was the proportion of shrooms after all this.
So i made a derivative species from the river freolla and i quicly drew a landscape.
What do you think of it?
>>
>>22320212

Freollas were supposed to be the canopy trees when I drew the starter plants, so that picture is quite accurate, though I would say that that the jungle/marsh is much more densely grown than in that picture.
The original idea I had was that the marshes were in almost perpetual twilight, with murky water everywhere, and yaced mats growing across the dry soil, forming a wast layer of living matter that constantly digests the massive amounts of detritus that the marshes generate.

Wasn't planning on working on this today, but it happened. I finally have a workable summary of what I'm doing. Basically It's a small sandbox in the desert...

In anycase, I've got a small cult trying to create a new doctrine in a turbulent territory.

The Rakiz territory got its name from an elder godworm that wandered into the region and expired in old age. It brought with it a tribe of suzumou that quickly splintered after its death. The resulting clans attempted to recreate their tribe by settling an oasis and brokering a deal between the clans. Clan Ecaz took and worked the oasis to cultivate its resources. Clan Corrino patrolled the surrounding area against the desert wildlife. And Clan Boro left the territory to discover new lands and sandworms outside the territory. It seemed that the Rakiz suzumou would regain their former status and power. However the deal between the clans didn't survive the coming seasons.

The Dry season hit the Ecaz hard and they weren't able to grow enough to feed their people. While the Corrino had plenty of casualties to the dreaded Houzi Brood hunting in the territory. The two clans came to a standoff outside the oasis. The Ecaz refused to give the Corrino the little food they had. In response, the Corrino threaten to raid their stores to take what was theirs. The two desperate suzumou clans fought each other, and the conflict to this day isn't resolved. When the Boro finally returned, they were disappointed that the clans couldn't cooperate and returned to their nomadic wanderings visiting the territory occasionally. The two feuding clans learned to summon their sandworms with ground stomping rituals, while the nomadic clan follower their sandworm where it went.
>>
>>22321754
Clan Ecaz took and secured a oasis in the region. They developed their farming skills to harvest the Cho and Kaskus, and generally wish to be left alone. Due to near constant raiding, they mistrust any suzumou outside their clan and furiously guard their holdings. Their legends praise discerning wisdom and patient peace in a storm of confusion.

Clan Corrino never found a secured peace. They developed their raiding tactics to kidnap and steal from other suzumou, wanting only to survive not subjugate. By fostering their skills, they became much more aggressive than other suzumou. Their heroes were often the quickest and most vicious, rivaling the dreaded Houyi Brood.

Clan Boro regularly wander inside and outside the region. While the other clans depend on rituals to summon a sandworm, the Boro trail a single sandworm and live a more traditional nomadic existence. They are more knowledgeable of legends outside of Rakiz.
>>
>>22321762
Out of this disorder came a teacher, Zambur. He recruited his followers came from the different Rakiz clans and taught them to create a New Doctrine. This new doctrine would seek to explain truth and the nature of god. With his teachers came the heretical claim that the godworms were only part of an incomplete truth, not divine in and of themselves. This proved to be too much for other clans to tolerate. Zambur was taken and stoned. His followers continued without him naming themselves the Zamburaq.

The Philosophy of Might teaches: If there is an ultimate truth and an ultimate god, then surely his followers are the strongest and conquer their enemies. They must gather the strongest clans and adopt their beliefs to the exclusion of others. "The mightiest of us must be blessed by the highest power."

The Philosophy of Song teaches: Ultimate truth can be discerned by examining many different beliefs and judging which pieces best fit together. They must interact with other clans and combine their beliefs. "We are but one light. Let us gather all others to enlighten the whole desert."

The Philosophy of Wisdom teaches: All speakers carry with them worldly concerns, therefore internal debate is the only path to truth. They must isolate themselves from other beliefs and formulate their own. "Block out all distractions so that truth will present itself in quiet meditation."

Dieing of old age for Godworms isn't like how it is for creatures on Earth. Usually, it's from suffocating under their own weight, or unable to be sustained by the hunts of their Suzumou. Of course there are still things like illness, cancer, cardiac arrest, etc.

Here are two new knogos species.

The Trumpet knogos is a mid sized social herbivore, which feeds mostly on pod bluvas and roots. They use their strong arms to pick up bluva pods and dig up juicy roots.
They get their name from the alarm sound they make, using their noise bladder.

Ragos is a large, solitary, carnivorous knogos species, that mainly feeds on smaller knogos species. They are a hunter knogos split off, whose hunting tactics focus on stalking close enough to their prey, and then running them down before they can flee.
They kill their victims with their strong jaws, and in case of small prey, they just pick them up with their strong arms and finish them off with their bite.

These two knogos species live both in the forests and in the plains.

So I was planning on having a Koburrog tribe in the southern jungles who live on the back of a Mother Grub. The attatched picture is what I had initially made as ethnic differences with them and i'll post what I've written up for them.

The Rii'Dan are a small tribe of Koburrogs who travelled from their home in the southern desert, seeking respite from the harsh desert and the creatures within. They settled along a river, rich with fungal growth and some relatively passive animal species. They built a place to call their own, a place they could safely call home. They lived in relative peace for years, having found what they thought was a land safe from the horrors of the desert. This safety was not long lived though, for their riverside home became increasingly hostile, the plants becoming more and more toxic with the fungus they subsided on becoming aggressive. The Rii'Dan were almost wiped out with this, being forced to flee into the fringes of the jungle, scattering to the winds. Only the strongest of the tribe survived, with the more peaceful members dying to the fungal attacks. As such the once peaceful tribe became more militant, focused upon what it would take to allow them to survive. They killed what they could, stole what they could find. Any progress they had gained in their more peaceful time was lost when the Toxeced scattered them. They had lost much, turning into the very thing they had been trying to escape.
>>
>>22324033
When the Mud Grubs developed the anti-toxen plants, the Koburrog were given a new lease on their existence. By this time, the Rii'Dan had become a shadow of themselves. While a few had come to the jungle to populate it, even fewer survived at this time. The Rii'Dan initially killed the Mud Grubs to gain their fruits, assuming the creatures to be hostile, as history had taught them about this land. Eventually the Mud Grubs became larger than the Rii'Dan could easily take down, so they were forced to watch them. They learned that the creatures actually ignored other lifeforms, instead focusing on plant matter. When the Grubs became their engorged size, becoming the Mother Grubs, The Rii'Dan moved onto it's back to gain access to the fruits they grew. They ate these fruits as supplements to their diets, allowing them to consume some of the less toxic elements in the jungle.

Their history is recorded thought oral storytelling, with writing being something that never occurred to them. Their history is embellished by each storyteller, the prominent figures becoming almost god-like in their prowess. Their heros are often Koburrog who bravely fought the jungle, dying for the betterment of the tribe.

They have a religion centered around the three elements prominent in their lives, the Moons, the Sun, and the Toxeced. They believe that the Sun is a large Flutter Wespar who's wings are the sun's rays. The Sun is hunted by the Moons, a Slizer and it's mate, followed by their children in a large mess that travels after the Sun each night.
The third diety, the Toxeced, is know to them as servents of The One Who Waits. This Diety embodies death in their mind, taking sustenance from it's Toxeced servants. It lives beneath the surface, its stirrings causing the ground to rumble. It waits for the day that one of the two in the other diety's hunt gains the upper hand. Once this day happens, The One Who Waits will come forth from his subterranean home and feast upon them.
>>
>>22324042

Each night, the Koburrog have a ritual at midnight, when the Moons shine overhead. They take a sacrifice and offer it to the heavens, hoping to distract the Moon so that the Sun may survive another day. In each meal they partake in, the Rii'Dan leave aside a small bit for the Sun, to allow it to regain energy and continue the next day.
>>
>>22322744
Definitely not suffocating under its weight, it was still moving under its own power. It might be possible that the suzumou just weren't able to find enough food in the Rakiz region.

However I'd like to hear some illnesses it could have suffered.

I'll be playing a prominent figure/force Trading: the Yakush Clan traders.

The Yakush Clan is a Gorriog led by the young and ambitious Patriarch, Yakush Zokulza. The clan has been at the forefront of trading between Hu-raan and the Hitangan almost since the moment the nation of Nutera experienced immense social upheval from a civil war and a period of intense attacks by wild animals. That time was known as the Dark Years. The short story is that the heirs to the throne were a pair of twins, but they fought each other to gain sole control over the Kingdom of Nutera. In the end, one of the brothers (it is no longer known which) killed the other brother, and forced his supporters to "settle" the islands surrounding Nutera, in what was in effect Exile. The Yakush did not join the other exiles on the islands surrounding their former homeland, and became wanderers, eventually make successful lives as merchants. The Kingdom was later devastated by swarms of wolf sized bugs that act like carnivirous locusts, known as blade runners. Now the Kingdom, as the Kings mainland holdings on Old Nutera are known, are reduced to a few forts on the coasts, guarding against the Blade runner swarms. The Yakush, meanwhile, grew till they were controlling trade between the Nuteran Exiles, the Kingdom and the other nations, and are major players in trade between the various desert tribes, with knowledge of secrets oaises and desert trails that make them able to make a profit out of the otherwise harsh desert.

The Yakush, if they have any religion at all beyond superstitions, is centered around wealth. Yakushi consider success to be holy, or destined. Those who have great wealth are deserving, and possesing of superior, perhaps unseen, qualities. Merchants are almost priests, and their gospel is wealth.

It might have been wounded by another large sandworm, and had the wound infected or something.
Because the sandworms are otherwise very resilient fuckers. They are very resistant to most diseases, as their body itself is infused with all kinds of microbes that help it utilize every bit of organic material it can eat.
The only reason for the deaths of old worms is starvation, as their non stop growth renders them too heavy to move at all. They will continue growing ever after being immobilized, as their body begins to cannibalize non essential tissues to fuel this growth.
This trait is due to their genes, and happens to young worms as well.

Sandworms will keep growing, even if they are starving. Their genes direct them to grow physically larger until they are only withered husks.
Although it seems absurd on the surface, there is actually a very valid reason for this. Sandworms reproduce in immense numbers. Their larvae are countless in their number. The larvae are however, very small, and easy prey. Their only way to survive is to grow larger. A starving young worm, can afford to keep growing by cannibalizing it's own tissues, as it can regenerate them when it has managed to acquire more food. Growing in size is more vital to them, as the threat of larger predators is ever present during the life time of the worm, as the bigger worms will greedily eat smaller ones. This fact has made the growth genes so prominent in the sandworm genome, that they keep affecting them to the moment of their death.
The worms keep growing as long as they live, though the rate slows down considerably when they are nearing adulthood.

An adult sandworm is almost impossible to kill by any other creature. They have no enemies, besides each other, and if it was not for their genes, they would be practically immortal. Their genes however, will ultimately cause their demise. The evolutionary pressure to keep growing affects the young worms, and that what matters to evolution.

An offshoot of the Holun is the Stripper Holun. Named not for a provocative and exotic dance, but that it uses it's massive claws to strip the outside of plants off, eating the tender insides which it prefers. Strippers are very similar in function to a gorilla.

A new type of yantar plants adapts to the plains.

The pool yantar is a stout plant, that rarely grows taller than few meters. Instead of forming many layered "cups", this yantar plant grows a pool and many smaller pools within the main one. This shape is due to the way the plant reproduces.
It uses the water that it gathers to it's pool to attract thirsty creatures living in the plains. When the creatures come to drink from it's pool, they get smeared by the plant's spores from it's purple leafs. The spores are sticky, but they start drying after they are smeared on the hide/fur of the creature and eventually start to fall off, thus spreading the plant across the plains.

By the way, if you guys want to, make up little resource icons so I can put them up on the gridmap.
So far we brainstormed there could be 5 categories of resources: food, fuel, ore, building materials, and medicine. Or can we improve these categories? After that we can decide what resource goes where.
We could also go the Civ way and state there's two categories: Strategic and Luxury resources.
>>
>>22334544

Personally i'd like to have multiple resources and with them bring one thing we haven't used much; Trade. I mean that we haven't ever taken into account how rich each tribe is. Tribes just are and they just have armies but never have we taken considered how war impacts economy. of course this was understandable in tribal stage but now that we get to more advanced age my opinion is that we should think more of these things as we progress. After all for war you need three things; Gold, Gold and more gold.
>>
>>22334544

By region perhaps, certain zones contain certain things, then tailor to the race. For example, one are may be densely forested with plants and fungi. That is food, building materials, possibly medicine, but if it is a carniverous race perhaps only the latter two with a requirement to hunt.

>>22334544

The strategic and luxury resource split would allow perhaps for greater flexibility of the resources themselves. Some resources might be more important for certain races than they are to others. For example, suzumou would benefit very little from a good source of rocks, as they simply lack the strength to manipulate them in any large degree, whereas gorriroks could easily build a rock quarry there, and thus gain a ready source of building materials.

I would also ad another category for the map markers, Hazards. Things like quicksand, sandoni swarms, powerful sand storm, wespar swarms, houyi territories and so on. Some hazards might have same effects on all species, while others might not be so severe on certain species, or might even work as resources for them.
For example, a place where sandworms congregate would be dangerous for other species, but the suzumou might gain some benefit from the place, mostly in form of breeding (If the tribe in question lacks a godworm of their own.)

Anyways, here is a picture of a Tribal Knogos female, and her two cubs. ( I could use help naming this race. Just calling them tribal knogos is dumb.)

Instead of specifics I've got some board categories to handle rescoures. The two biggest are Industry, which handles the materials nessassary to develop a infarstructure, and Ecology which handles the materials readily avaiable in the natural world such as wildlife and fertile land.

Industry has several tiers which can facilate a civ's development. At node 0 we've got common materials such as wood and stone which can be aquired with lumber camps and rock quarries. At the second tier we've got different kinds of ores from the light britle metals to the exotic metals with strange properties. Another tier is certain kinds of combusables such as coal, gas, and oil. Refined materials can come about with research and experimentation.

In Ecology we've got the means and needs to feed your starving civ. In general you've got gardens and farms that produce food. As well as wildlife which you and harvest for food, hides, and possible domestication. As understanding increases, your civs can discover different uses for plants, which can become lux spices for trade and happiness or even medicial herbs to boast medical knowledge.

The next few categories are based on your civ's developments. Research, Commerce and Culture aren't readily available but can be grown over time. And while Industry is grown and developed internally and Ecology is based on external conditions, these rescoures straddle that line.

Commerce is the easiously understood as wealth. Though it can't nessarily be quaditified as gold. At the first tier, we've got simple barter system which the parties trade value goods for other goods. At the second tier Money, based on a common barter item or coinage based on metal, brings a standard of value. Trade relations with other peoples can increase Commerce better than hording wealth alone.
>>
>>22338531

Research as a rescoure isn't the accumlated knowledge of your civ, but the ability of your civ to experiment and discover new secerts. Keeping records of anykind such as oral poetry, stone slabs, or script can improve your civs ability to learn from their past. Setting aside special workspaces and gathering novel materials can also improve this rescoure.

The benefits of Culture can't be quatified. One of the reasons I believe specfic resources aren't nessary to this game. A strong cultural idenity can keep your people motivated during troubling times. And terrible rolls. Culture can be fed with unique epic achviments, traditions, belief systems, and special projects. If your civ is stable and interacts with other people regularly your culture can influence them. Whether for better or worse.

Power, military power, could also count as an abstract resource. The ability to field brave soliders with strong weapons is based on a few other rescources. Ecology to feed these fighters, as well as Industry and Commerce to create them. Research to discover the better mousetrap, and Culture to promote solidering.

All the above, take with a grain of salt. The strength of this game is in creating an interesting setting and watching the progress of its people. Their stuggles and victories, their discoveries and enlightenments. The above categories are only as efficitive as you make it. I love to abstract these things since it lends itself to storytelling.
