How do you like your dargon races? Plantigrade or digitigrade?

I'm interested in hearing your opinions. my group's split in half over it.
>>
Digitigrade
>>
>>21998886
...any particular reason why?

according to my group

those for plantigrade claim:
- plantigrade for posture and stability
- lets them wear shoes
- digitigrade limbs are "furry"

those for digitigrade claim:
- digitigrade results in faster and quieter running speed, suiting the predatory nature of these races
- it makes them more like dargons

I had to look up what those terms mean... now that I do digitigrade, defiantly, it gives them a less human quality and not so much the low-grade sci-fi actor with prosthetics.
>>
>>21998860
Digitigrade. Because otherwise they're just humans with scales. It also makes more sense that a species descended from a species with digitigrade legs would have them

>posture and stability
digitigrade can offer just as much stability if the race is built to stand upright. The reason dogs look stupid walking on their hindlegs is because their forebody is too unbalanced--they're built for charges, not climbing, unlike primates. Posture is another issue entirely, and could be the factor that corrects any balance issue.
>shoes
Is it really that hard to wonder why a group of people wouldn't make custom-made shoes/boots/foot-protectors for themselves?
>furry
Now your group is just being a bunch of prepubescent xenophobes.

>faster and quieter
Not so sure about the latter, but the prior is true dependent on two things: height and build. The taller/longer the race is, the faster it will be. Watch some videos of cheetahs and take note of the way they sprint. They build up momentum by stretching their bodies mid-stride. Watching sprinters in particular can give you a better feel for why height matters. The taller you are, the higher your center of gravity, so when you sprint (remember: sprinting is a controlled fall) you're going to fall faster.
>draconic figures
Whatever floats your boat, man.

>plantigrade or digitigrade?
Go with whichever you like, OP.

>>
>>21998860
It depends on what the race is to be used for in the game. If they're only enemies, digitigrade no further questions. If they're a player race (specifically one that is meant to integrate well with humans and not be too 'beastly') it should be plantigrade, with exceptions.

>>
>>21999510
And why the particular distinction, if you don't mind?
>>
I'd go with digitigrade since they're both biologically feasible and it adds a bit more exoticness making the race stand out more.

Neither is really a bad option.
>>
>>21998860
>>21998860
Digitigrade. It gives them a more feral, animal-like quality, gives them a more distinct silhouette, and looks really cool with a slightly arched back.

>>21999009
>>digitigrade limbs are "furry"

See, I'd actually argue the opposite. Furries usually just take a human form and slap a furry head and a tail on them. It results in a general lack of diversity and holds too strongly to a human form. Actual character designers tend more to emphasize the actual animal features and then add just enough humanity to make them relatable.
>>
>>21999377
those are some cuddly buggers
>>
I prefer digitigrade myself, makes them seem more predatory and allows for faster movement (only race that's small size and has 30' base speed, get on our level halflings.)

But then I am a furry, so my opinion means nothing.
>>
>>21999558
It's about the effect the look has on people. Digitigrade feet will always make the race look 'beastlier'. It takes away an element of humanity from them and makes them look more combat-oriented since they always have a look like they're in fight or flight mode.

I disagree. Plantigrade doesn't necessarily mean a human foot with scales (a la elderscrolls, which half ass it completely). They could have a more iguana toe structure and still use the flat of their foot to walk, and I feel like that's not what they consider "furry" but still animalistic.

OP, it depends on whether or not they have a tail.

Tailed races are going to be digitgrade and their stances will be stooped compared to a human (kinda like a velociraptor, really).

Tailless races are going to plantigrade, and their posture similar to humans. In fact, they probably don't even have sharp claws on their toes, anymore.

The primary exception is if the race didn't originate naturally in-game (i.e. a dragon wizard took a hillful of innocent gnomes and turned them into the first kobolds). In that case, anything goes.

Sensible answer. But I imagine you could design cobold with tail and plantigrade feet. pic related.
Modern lizards have plantigrade feet, but modern lizards suck ass. Predatory dinosaurs had them digitigrade and were awesome.

See this here raptor rendition? See this large pelvic bone? It is called ischium. It is important muscle anchoring point.

If you want your kobolds digitigrade, with tail used as balance instead of being dragged around- draw your kobolds with that pelvic bone.

Depends on the race.

Kobolds? definitely Digitrade. they're compact, tailed, and have a higher movement speed than average small creatures.

the "dragonkin" or whatever 4e has, I really have no opinion on. Half-Dragons can run the gamut though, depending on how the dragon-blood manifests, but since larger creatures get wings and stuff, I'd imagine larger half-dragons tend to look more "draconic."

however, the Gila Monster lookin' kobolds posted >>21999377 there are pretty cool lookin'... perhaps make them a "desert variety?"

I like both actually but it depends on the setting. Digitigrade just makes more sense, and I usually chalk up Plantigrade as laziness on the artist who would rather just draw a human with a tail and a lizard head.

Digitigrade looks like it can do so much more, I look at them and think "I bet they run fast as hell" or "Watch it jump 20 feet". Plantigrade can be okay if it's justified through the lore, like maybe both Plantigrade and Digitigrade exist due to defects or evolution.

As for shoes, I think leather or metal armor over the tops of them make the most sense. If only the most vital pieces of the top are covered then it leaves more flexibility for the rest of their foot which means moving faster, jumping higher, etc. That's all depending what this lizard does, though. Just like people, there are probably Lizards that just want to be magic user sin their plain leather shoes. I would say cloth wizard shoes but their toenails would have to cut right through that.
>>
For kobolds I like plantigrade, and I'll explain why.

First, the argument has been given that digitigrade legs give a more predatorial, bestial look. I agree, and it is this reason why I don't like it for kobolds. Kobolds aren't bestial predators, they're thieving, scavenging little vermin. Human-like legs help visually reinforce this.

Second, digitigrade is good for running, but plantigrade is better for walking. Since kobolds are not predators and fighters but trappers and skulkers I imagine they would be served better by plantigrade feet.

Finally, while I don't have any hard data to support it, it seems reasonable to me that plantigrade would be better for climbing and balancing in the sort of tunnels and lairs kobolds dwell in.

This is all just my opinion, of course, and I don't have a serious problem with digitigrade kobolds.

I actually prefer plantigrade, if only because they've been bumped up to a player race. plantigrade feet seems to give the creature a bit more, i dunno, intelligence is the wrong word but its all that comes to mind. civilized, I suppose. digitigrade seems more fit for a feral/monster race, as it's a trait of a creature that actively seeks out prey.

>>22000678
people ignore that in fantasy drawings because it makes the dinosaurs looks like they have enormous dicks

Bingo. Digitgrade is great for Kobolds as hostile creatures because they're meant to be cowardly, yet cunning little runts with little empathy to give (and little to receive). Plantigrade suits Kobolds as a PC race, because it humanizes 'em a little more.

There are three kinds in Germanic folklore.

There's the house sprites like >>22003345 mentions, roughly the same sort of deal as brownies or hobgoblins or that sort of thing.

There's the malevolent mine haunts, which is where cobalt gets its name.

And then there's basically a boat version of the house sprite, called the Klabautermann. I only know this because I just looked at the wiki article because, like you, I'd only ever heard about the mine type before the anon above mentioned the house type.

>On kobold society and sexuality
The three genders of kobold species form the basis of their highly regimented, almost bee-hive like society where its members are expected to only work towards the common good, and individualism is seen distasteful.

>Workers
Worker gender comprises almost 99% of a given kobold populus. They spend most of their lives as asexual hermaphrodites, toiling ceaselessly as the colony's workers, craftsmen and soldiers. They get recruited for breeding purposes according to the colony's needs by the Foreman gender. When this happens, a pair of kobolds that express desirable traits are induced to undergo transformation into their reproductive state. This takes a span of three days, at which point mating needs to happen to maintain their altered hormonal state or they rapidly revert to their native state. During this period the kobolds act slightly more aggressively, but otherwise behavioral changes are miniscule. Like birds kobolds lack external sexual organs, and genetic material is transferred through cloacal kiss. After mating both Workers become pregnant and enter a brooding period, during which this time they lose scale coloration and become timid and withdrawn from society. After three weeks they lay a clutch of 8-10 eggs, which are then transferred to the care of the Priest gender.
>>
>>22005772

>Foremen
Foremen are slightly larger than regular Workers, and secrete a wide variety of pheromones which help to maintain order in a kobold colony. The multitude of hormones circulating in a Foreman make them chemically unstable and thus incapable of reproduction themselves, but they are necessary to induce sexual behavior in Workers. They have a specialized organ on the roof of their mouth which produces the sex hormones required to trigger a transformation in a Worker, and these are administered to the chosen Workers as aerosols - basically as a sneeze into the Worker's nostrils. Although the main function of Foreman pheromones is to induce obedience in Workers, they can have other functions too. For instance, during war time they secrete hormones that help to make Workers fearless, and can even instill a blood frenzy in nearby soldiers.

>Priests
Priests form the absolute ruling class of kobold society. Their major function besides administration and religious duties is to care for and choose how newly laid eggs are incubated. Kobold eggs incubated in high temperature maturate quickest and produce Workers, medium temperature takes longer and produces Foremen, and slow, low temperature incubation yields Priests. Although Priests are completely sterile they are still desirable to have in a small proportion in a colony, since they are the sole member of the species that express any aptitude to magic whatsoever.

Digitigrade creatures cannot into bipedal if they are digitigrade in the traditional sense. This is kinda because the downward force on a non-moving limb will probably cause the ankle (that second knee looking-thing on a digitigrade critter) to snap. The entirety of the creature's weight is focused on their legs.

Argonians' genders are sometimes referred to as life-phases, implying they may be able to change gender. However, this is unconfirmed, and Argonian hatchlings may be of either gender. Argonian appearance ranges from reptilian to almost human; this is decided by the amount of Hist sap they ingest as hatchlings, which ceremonially takes place on their Naming Day

I suppose furry is the incorrect term. Humie? what the hell would you call an animal that wants to be human?

I'm not gonna make a big deal of it either way, but all things being equal I would generally prefer digitigrade. (In fact, when I drew up my current lizardman character I chose digitigrade.) My only argument against it is the odds of artists screwing up digitigrade feet and/or entire legs are higher, which may make them ending up looking overall worse than plantigrade. Plantigrade is the safer choice.

It got... Complicated.

The campaign's shifting into the clusterfuck-phase where the BBEG has forsaken subtlety in favor of sending his minions wherever he thinks the party might be, along with harassing our respective homelands. This left me with very little time to talk to any of the party in general, let-alone find a private moment to slap the Kobold around her head and ask her what her bloody game is.

I managed to get a chance when we returned to the Dragon's lair, whose wrath got me drunk in the first place, to get a look at the loot (I didn't have a chance to look when I last arrived because my comrades were urgent on getting our wounded back to safety). The answer was somewhat unexpected.

Turns out she was truthful, and nothing actually happened. However, not only is the patience between our party-members beginning to fray with so much pressure on us, but our respective homelands are also getting rather aggressive with oneanother. She initially left the circumstances ambiguous so she could use it as a means of blackmail if my character shows intentions of betraying the party, and has apparently been considering using similar tactics to keep the rest of the party from tearing each other to pieces. Sort of like how Batman keeps a Kryptonite ring, I guess.

The session ended shortly after this confrontation. I managed to get myself a swanky new set of armor from the Dragon's loot, and instead using my character as ye-olde heated matress I just wrapped her up in my surcoat (layered as fuck for his cold homelands) and told her I require thought on the situation.

On one hand, it's a relief that the Kobold's intentions weren't like THAT, but on the other hand it's became pretty clear that our party's losing both morale and cohesion.

A setting I'm working on has a race of golem-like dragon worshiping cultists. They travel in packs and form towns around the dragon remains they find (dragons being extinct).
However, most of these remains are underground and/or in stip mine-like holes, so their towns usually work out like hives.

Image loosely related (a comparable image of their appearance, but more gaunt and usually nude, with next-to-no body fat). Their elite grow horns from their skulls, it is a sign of their divine right to rule.

Great big demon-esque serpents w/ legs and wings. A more lithe version of the usual afair in body, with bat-like facial features on lizard skulls w/ ram horns. However, their details and facial structures differ greatly. The different religions call them different things, some including them as demons and then also mentioning dragons because nobody ever put 2 and 2 together. While notably intelligent they never really surpassed human intelligence, and defiantly never got to the point where they could communicate or anything.

I recommend this article to explain biomechanics of those awesome predatory dinosaurs. Basically, tails were very stiff and contained huge muscles connecting directly to femur. This probably gave those predators awesome leg power and speed. It doesn't seem to me that it would work with plantigrade feet. Digitigrade wins, flawless victory.

They don't wear shoes. In the event that they come across some magically enchanted footwear (which has never happened), it would probably gets passed along to another party member or else sold for cash.
In the event that I want to buy magically enchanted footwear (which has happened), I just make a point of saying I want to commission it in some wonky form that works for me and nobody else, like foot bracers or something.
I don't think anyone in my group actually cares one way or the other.

Would that kind of anatomy work with an upright creature though? It requires the tail be rigid, and the bones the muscles attach to are part of the lower torso. It's spine would need to be straight for them to work. Also, the muscle structure in question doesn't deal with the lower leg. Digitigrade may not neccessarily be a requirement

>>
>>22016253
Answer: it would not. The book's author stresses that body position was very close to horizontal at all times- this is the only workable solution.

Thing is though- this 'inverted ischium' is characteristic to most bird-like bipedal dinosaurs, so if I were to make a kobold- I'd design around that.

Caudofemoralis muscle in the tail is pretty important to justify metabolic expense of having such large tail. It attaches to femur and gives much leg power. That, and swimming.

I think they offer an intresting twist to the idea of kobolds. I'm writing a little story about a small group of them stealing honey (which will probably go no where and never get finished like most stuff I do) and they are just fun to work with.

So my group recently did some Dawn of Worlds. After we have an adventure in the world we'll have another couple rounds of Dawn of Worlds.
At that point in time I am going to create the Pangolinbold race and have them become the leaders in siege warfare, cooperating with the Ogres, I'm sure.

This thread has been amazing. Turned me on to Everignot and gave me an awesome new race to use.

Yeah, pretty much. Most of them are long, skinny things. But there's a good bit of variety, with MTG being set on different planes. I still find it weird that they are type Viashino, since Leonin and crap are just Cat.

The Alara ones were big and brutish, but that's 'cause they were mostly from Jund.

>If you want your kobolds digitigrade, with tail used as balance instead of being dragged around- draw your kobolds with that pelvic bone.

It doesn't need to be that large, however. Dromaeosaurs have a pronounced rearward facing ischium, which is uncommon amongst other therapods because theirs is usually facing much further forward.

And then you have other animals with long erect tails that didn't drag around on the ground but didn't have huge extended pelvic bones.
