I need to get to a capital city as soon as possible. As dull as it might be, I could probably handle being a pencil pusher of some kind. Being literate will probably help with that.

I'm an EMT and I've got a lot of health policy classes under my belt. I suppose I could set up a health insurance company. With any luck, I'll be carrying a strain of common cold or flu that the malnourished peasants will have no resistance to, causing a plague to appear out of nowhere which I can then halt it with proper quarantine and sanitation methods, quickly increasing my influence.

I know a little about metal-working, and how to make and safely mass-produce black powder in medieval conditions.

I will attempt to team up with a blacksmith and sell my expertise to a king; I will need many apprentices because finding an alloy safe for gun barrels will kill most of them.

As someone else said, literacy is probably my most valuable asset depending on setting.

I'd get a quiet job and save up, then go walkabout for a bit. Find out the state of the kingdom, its politics, its strength, the high/low magic of the world. Find out what I know that they don't and vice versa.

If the age is a tyranny, use my relatively advanced knowledge of political science, warfare and psychology to lead a peasant uprising. If the age is a benevolent one, find a pencil-pushing job and a redheaded baker's daughter.

I'm a little old, but becoming an apprentice of some kind would be my best bet. Preferably a Wizard's apprentice, because magic. Barring that, become a squire for a knight of little renown and be trained with sword and bow. Then, wander the world to seek my fortune.

I have basic tools, training, knowledge of how to work/make low-tech tools, and a huge amount of knowledge, most of it useless in fantasy.

First thing I'd do would be to trade whatever I can part with for something to make money with. More tools, perhaps.
Then I'd find somewhere to eat and sleep.
After that, I'd set about trying to make local currency.

After getting suitable equipment (tools, cheap-but-effective armour, a weapon I can use, local clothes, etc.), I'd set off for the nearest big town. Find someone who can grind lenses, and a blacksmith. Because if my glasses break, I am fucked, and will need spares.
I'd then go wander the earth for a while, before settling down somewhere with a job or a plot of land to work, and maybe a waifu. Then wanderlust would kick in, and I'd wander off for a while before returning or settling elsewhere.
Maybe I'd try and learn this magic stuff, if it's possible.

I become a story teller, introducing groundbreaking concepts of science fiction to the world to earn coin from the awestruck noble class, who will consider my ideas a supreme novelty.

Find the local monks, or whatever they call the learned know-it-all's, and share my 21st century science with them as well. The knowledge that germs exist alone, as well as antibiotic principals, should be groundbreaking. Thanks, bees!

Now that I have proven myself as a man of intelligence, knowing things beyond the mortal ken, I can hopefully convince a wizard that I am a capable apprentice.

Then I become a wizard who also knows science.

Find kings, tell them the truth that I was sent by a wizard.

Explain to them that in my land, kings and generals resolve conflict via miniatured versions of conflict. Tabletop war is as valid tactically as the real thing, but at a minimum of the cost. Convince other kings of the realm that instead of waging long and expensive wars, they can settle it this way.

I'd have a bunch of art materials, a lot of printer paper [both used and clean], my cellphone+earphones, my wallet with a bunch of meaningless green paper and overdated condoms, a few flyers, possibly also a x-acto knife, an utility knife, a swiss knife and a medium sized fantasy book.

My skills would include college-level knowledge in graphic [though that's quite useless here] and product design, being well-versed in english, amateur skill in woodworking, being an amateur artist and being overall smarter than everyone around, since I wouldn't be illiterate and I have a modicum of knowledge in anthropology, philosophy, history [which would be meaningless in a different world, but would make for good fairytales] and sociology.

I'd probably look for an artisan, signmaker or carpenter willing to take me as a pupil [maybe a painter, with some luck]. I'd try to write some good books there or become a skillful artist/artisan/architect to get in good terms with the nobility.


About the magic stuff, what would define how good with magic you would be? Obviously not everyone in the world could be able to magick, but which set of skills would make someone better at magicking?
To be a good mage, would you need plain mathematical/logical thinking? Studying a completely different set of magical sciences that don't follow the logic of our world? Comprehending how matter works in order to better alter it? Maybe being disciplined and able to focus on minimal details would yield better results?

So I show up in the middle of Fantasyland with my mobile phone, my wallet and, hopefully, a messenger bag carrying a notebook and a few pens, pencils and rubbers. Great. I have no idea of what would I do to get by those first days.
I would try to find the local cleric/wizard and explain to him what the hell just happened to him. Let's hope my confused state, strange clothes and gadgets will convince him that I'm telling the truth and will make him take me as a guest until I can figure out shit on my own. Otherwise I would try to barter my pens and pencils for a room in the inn.
Next step would be to learn as much as possible about the world I'm in, current rulers, calendar, hazards, religion, other races that might exist and whether they are peaceful or not. I could probably spent weeks or even months reading everything.
After that? I don't know. I guess I'll have to find myself a home and I'll wonder if, perhaps, some of the strange races and cultures I've read about would welcome me and my strange stories of another world. I always liked the Underdark in Fantasy settings, perhaps that's where I should go after learning how to use a sword.

Realistically? Abuse my literacy and probably lead a relatively quiet life studying Magic and doing some printing work on the side.

If I'm not casting spells, healing the occasional sick, or printing up a copy of a spell book for a commission then I could see myself doing a spot of fishing and light traveling.

Maybe to some ruins outside of town, maybe visit a farmers market or two, then had back to my hovel or enclave depending on how successful I become.

Luckily, I have a great deal of military/survival information on my laptop, most which could easily be adapted to a pre-industrial world. I also have a solar battery-recharger and a small survival//medical kit in my backpack. I have a craft knife and two short knives for work (an 8" and a 12"). I have three pens, a notepad, my wallet with coin, plastic note and plastic cards/paper cards/business cards, my phone, my keys a work vest, a work shirts, black pants, steel-capped boots, boxers, a pair of feet shaped earrings and if I'm on my way to work a backpack with a PSP, charger, street shirt, bobby pins, hair ties, and the usual detritus that accompanies a backpack that exists for multipurpose use.

I'm pretty sure, that as long as I don't get killed for arriving and looking different that if I head to a metallurgist/smith or a place of learning and give over all my stuff I will be able to live nicely on paid property giving out what shit I know.

If I land in a place where people are open and innovative the stuff I have on me, and the knowledge I have will enrich them in ways that will accelerate their technological and sociological progress: for good or ill.

Hopefully though they have magic/diving power because the first thing that will need to happen is that I have cure disease, etc cast on me so I don't plague father the entire world.

While I can't myself cause too much acceleration on my own, the fibers, metals and PLASTICS I carry can be reverse engineered, as long as people are open, innovative and careful with the limited resources I have on me.

If I unload all of my applyable knowledge and faced with old age, I'll sit back in the university writing extensive thoughts and theories on potential future scientific, military and industrial breakthroughs, which will amazingly be proved accurate in later centuries and serve as guides for future scientists to look into.
