welcome to the primordial caverns. Its dark here, you get a little light from cracks to the surface, and deeper down, only from bio luminescence, after that, its pitch black and you get around with feelers or echolocation.

Meet the cast!
-inoglund, wirm- what you see is what you get. low tier omnivores/ prey
-cave bord- little glowing bobber on its head to help it see in the deepest of the dark. prey
-cave fus- the only flyer so far. is an ambush predator
-geist- blind mid tier predator
-Emils is a glowing slime that will strip the flesh off of an animal's bones. purely carnivorous. can cling to any surface.
-Fat Hoppa (remember how pathetic those guys were? they still are small, weak and defenseless, but they are bigger then everything else down here) are the apex life form of these caves for now because they are much bigger then everything else. omnivores
Cedya- fungus. causes upset stomach.
Cave Ragas- fruiting plant found growing where light shines in from the surface
Fren- a fern type plant adapted to living off of its own bio luminescent light. is provided by glowing bacteria inside it.
>>
but how do i play you ask?! Simply grab the picture, ms paint, and make a minor evolution to a creature, a bump in a new direction. its your imagination at work. not dice, not a GM. then post it up here.

Imagine the conflicts your creature must endure, and how it will adapt to survive its environment, its predators, its prey, and even its own kind.

I'm so tempted to make geist evolve eyes.

I'm pretty sure that will ruin it though.

>>
File: 1340453390361.png-(19 KB, 743x479, Cedya.png)
19 KB
Cedya develops pores to it's top that produce sweet smelling spores that stick to the snouts and bodies of any critter trying to sniff and eat them.

These spores will start growing in the flesh of the creature, becoming new cedya growths. Eventually, the host will succumb to the fungus growths eating it's flesh, and it's body will become a new cedya cluster.

The stalker geist species becomes more social.
They begin to live in family groups that consist of one dominant male, and larger group of females and juvenile gests.
The males are larger and more muscular, as they compete for the dominance of the pack with each other, while the females are more lithe and agile, as they tend to do the actual hunting.

The geist are mammal like creatures. They have similar skin as dolphins have, and they give birth to live young and take care of them together as a group. They are cunning predators that can take down stronger and bigger prey as the titan bords or the monstrous hoppas by working together.
They navigate with their sophisticated echolocation and they can use these high frequency sound waves to both communicate with each other and to stun small prey.
The maze like cave systems have forced them to develop good memory, as they need to know how to navigate the tunnels.

The stalker geists can be encountered in the deepest parts of the tunnels, as well as in the caves near the tunnels, as they aren't limited by sight. Their nests tend to be in the deeper tunnels though.

They hunt by stalking their prey as a group, and striking when the opportune moment rises. They use their strong jaws and clawed hands to quickly maim their victim, and then disengage until it bleeds to death.
>>
We figured that the Geists are probably related to the Cidexes and Firdogs in the IRC.

>>19596231
Just in case this post didn't make it clear, the stalker geists have quite pronounced gender dimorphism.
The females are smaller and more agile, while the males are big and strong.
The ratio of females to males is around 3:1. A dominant male doesn't tolerate other adult males in it's territory, so it will drive them away. The young males often group up and hunt together, looking geist prides with weakened male so they could take his place.

The combat between geist males starts with trying to impose the other one away with shows of strength. These shows include producing high pitch sonar shrieks that can actually to damage to some of the more vulnerable organs of the geist, as well as rising to their back legs to show off their strong arms.
If the howling and flexing doesn't deter the other combatant, the geists will attack each other. These fights are usually short and brutal, and more often than not, end up with the death of the other participant.

>>19596313
True, which means that the geists are actually one of the few mammal like species of this planet. They give birth to litters of young, lactate, tend them until they have grown big enough and so on. They are also warm blooded and very social creatures.

Someone got something confused a while back. This should be a Raga, not a Fren.

Bugfruit Ragas, have a two stage life cycle. The pods grow on the stalk, and when they mature, they break their stems and go out to seek mates. From the rear of their abdomens, they now have flower parts (Stigma, style, stamens and filaments. No petals though).
Seeds develop after mating, and planted in carcases. The Bugfruits "lays" the seeds, which grow into new stalks, and repeat the cycle.

Barrage raga is a bombardier raga offshoot.
It's fruits are like cluster bombs, their core containing chambers filled with substances, which will react explosively when in contact with each other, while the inner layers are filled with sharp seeds that will embed themselves to rock, creatures and plants like shrapnel.

The raga shoots barrages of these fruits towards creatures that pass by it which it detects by the vibrations they cause. These barrages serve to both defend the plant as well as to proliferate it, as the seeds embedded to the flesh of animals will feed off the host until it dies from the raga growing in it's innards.

First up is the clinger Ragas, creeping up walls, and ever towards the cracks of sunlight in the roof of the caverns it spreads far and wide, spewing its fruit down to the cavern floor which feed the herbivores. Next, is the False Ragas. It creates little seedlings which are semi aware to the hive, which is the plant itself. They go out in great numbers, killing and eating by swarming over their prey. When they are bloated with meat and gore, they will waddle their way back to the hive and throw themselves into the open stomach of the plant near its roots, to nourish its parent. some fruit bugs will get lost and form new plants. Finally is the Barrage Ragas. When it senses vibrations nearby it will pelt its prey with a deluge of seedlings from its body, those that make contact are hyper active and rapidly consume the biomass of what they impact into, taking root and disolving flesh and bone. If they do not make immediate contact, after a few hours they become intert, having spent their energy anyway, and are now good to eat for passing herbivores.

The territorial inoglund, Now called the grumpy inoglund, There species now has some gender dimorphism, with the males now having a horn and and flatter, larger tails, which, in addition to beating the crap out of stuff, now help to attract mates. Female grumpy inoglund have remained more or less (exactly) the same.

The social habits of the grumpy inoglund have changed as well. The females have lost their territorial drive and have gone back to their peaceful ways, and now wonder as they please. The males now welcome females into their territory. Males have begun fighting over territory, and females, and now buck horns to contest their property. The challenge continues until their horn is broken, and the broken horn male retreats to find a new home. The young live with the females until they become adolescents, at which time the adult male will chase away any young males, and females begin to roam.

The gases that started to seep into the lower caverns caused extreme irritation in the skin of the geists.
Over time, their rubbery skin started to excrete oily and slimy sweat like substance everywhere, that covered their skin and prevented it from being exposed to the irritating gas.
This slime proved to be very useful for the defense of the geist, as it made it hard for other predators to get a good grip on their bodies.
This slime also began to serve the social structures of the geists. Each geist's slime has signature taste and scent, allowing the geist creatures to recognize each other just by sniffing the slime marks they have left.
The scent of the slime also starts to deliver simple biological signals, such moods, sickness, when female is in heat, danger and so on.

The geists have also started collectively "humming" low frequency sonar waves that resonate with each other and allow the geist group as a whole "see" a wider area together. These deep bass like sounds map the caves of the geist group, and form this constant sensory link between the whole pride.
The geists use the higher frequency sounds for personal sonar, communication and attacks against small creatures, as the high pitched shrieks easily disorientate creatures such as wirms.

The carnivorous fren develops even stronger poison that causes the flesh of the victim to rot almost immediately after being stung, as well as paralyzes them completely. Their stinger also gains length, strength and speed, allowing the fren to deliver quick lashes and jabs at anything that moves too close to it. It's size is deceiving, as the some plants can reach as far as one meter from their growth place.

They have also started growing new fren plants from their roots, instead of spore based reproduction. Because of this, the fren plants will quickly form large glowing and deadly groves. Walking through one of these groves results in almost certain death, as the fren plants are prepared to deliver their deadly sting the moment an opportunity arises.
The fren plants detect movement through their roots, allowing them to spot suitable victims. The plants seem to eerily track any creature near them, their stingers twitching and waving, eager to plunge their hollow ends to the flesh of their next prey.

Meat and other soft stuff stays inside while bones and other hard stuff goes on top. This also means that they no longer digest bones so even if they don't have food for a while they won't lose their acquired bones making some of them hulking boneyards.

Paint.net or Photoshop mostly, I guess.
>>
>>19608814
Well, I'm using a program called paint.NET (pronouced paint dot net), it's free to download. I guess you could think of it like "MS Paint Plus". Loads quick and familiar setup, but with some added capability.

Others are using something called SAI, haven't used it myself so can't comment on its pros/cons. (Also free)

The biggest (without paying a cent) is GIMP. It's pretty much Photoshop lite.

All these, as I said are free and each has pros and cons. I listed them in order of filesize (smallest first) and vesatility (least tools/filters first). You can get any of these here:

Behold! The fearsome Fuzoid blood sucker!

The seeping gas damaged both the sail and the hunter fus populations in the deep caves, until eventually, they were forced to interbreed due to the lack of individuals of their own species.

The original sail fus lacked any kind of proper senses, rendering it quite vulnerable to both attack and to the gas which irritated their thing skin. The hunter fus had primitive IR sight, but it's slow locomotion rendered it equally vulnerable in it's gas caused weakened state.

The fuzoid creature has both the beneficial traits of it's ancestors, so it can now be even more active hunter, as well as avoid the tunnels with gas.
The fuzoids hunt in swarms, poisoning creatures, drinking their blood and laying their eggs in the corpses. They use their 3 powerful fins for locomotion, and their developed IR sight to track down prey.

Two new cedya species split off from the normal cedya mushrooms.

The first one is a hydra cedya. It stores large amounts of nutrients in the fruit like blisters in it's sides, which excrete sweet smelling odor. They use these fruits to attract herbivores, which they will spray with their spores when they come too close. It's tree heads allow it to monitor larger areas.

The second one is the great cedya, or "spore cannon". It is much larger than the normal cedya plant, and it doesn't spray spores around, it spits out large blobs of sticky and caustic blob that contains it's spores. These blobs ensnare other creatures, and melt trough their skin and armor, allowing the spores to feed on the creature and to grow into new spore cannons.
They can shoot out these blobs for over 6 meters away. Their main targets are inoglunds and shell wirms.

About the cedya mushrooms in general.
They resemble animals far more than they resemble mushrooms. They can move their body around, and they are very active predators. They have keen Infrared eyesight that allows them to spot potential prey. Their attacks are based on their flesh eating spores. Many of these spores never reach adulthood, as the adult cedya consumes them through it's root network that extends quite far from the creature.
The cedya eats the creatures it kills also trough it's root network. The roots quickly grow inside the creature and drain it dry of all nutrients, allowing the fungi to continue on living.
All cedya variants live in large colonies in wet areas.
The cedya spore is made from the embryonic cedya, food reserve to fuel it's growth and attachment roots. This small organism is covered with an caustic mantle, that it uses to melt through the flesh of it's host, or soil in case it fails to make contact with the flesh of other creature.

I present to you, a splinter species of the wevils that lives in the deepest tunnels.

The pool wevils are massive. They can sometimes encompass whole tunnels.
They mostly feed on the gas that seeps inside the tunnels, as their jelly like bodies contain organs and micro-organisms that can catalyze and break down the gases for energy and nutrients.
The pool wevils are however capable of also slowly digesting creatures as well. If something approaches the pool, it will quickly extend numerous sticky tentacles that will ensnare the victim and pull it to the jelly, in which it will quickly suffocate and then get digested.

Btw, ng, I assume that the emils and their descendants are derived from lemuy spores. They seem similar, seeing how the lemuy were gelatinous creatures as well.

the laser bord. An odd creature. Normally using its head mounted lense to emit low intensity light like a flashlight, it can focus the beam, dim it, or strobe. As a method of defense it can also emit single wavelength tight beam light, in essence, a laser. This can blind, or scaled up, burn enough to drive away most predators, as the hard shelled laser bord is not worth the burns and effort. As a last ditch effort, it will over power its laser creating a 3-5 second cutting beam. This will overwhelm its natural lense and burn it badly, the regeneration takes days, much like the surface of our own eyes after PRK or LASIC surgery (but that takes months). This is a dramatic if not somewhat risky display, as laser bord are not communal creatures, meeting only to mate, or in passing during feeding. They will defend each other when around one another.

While overcharging their laser they are known to do "the flappy dance" where their tiny wings wildly flap and they shake and bounce wildly from the knees while their feet remain firmly planted. It is a last ditch warning display before they fire their laser!!!

The lungbord further adapt to their odd niche. they now need only occasionally supplement their diet with prey animals for vitamins and minerals surviving mostly on the respiration on the heavy cave gas into oxygen. Their natural lungs have even atrophied. Likewise their mobility has become more dependent on their buoyancy within the gas, bounding about like an astronaut on the moon. Their prey is mostly any weak or young animal who wanders too close to gas filled chambers and clouds.
