The woman's eyes go blank as the person you call "Minna" simply vacates the premises. Not at a gallop, but at a trot, the humanity slinking out of her eyes like a wounded animal. Her shoulders go slack, her jaw drops, and all consciousness drains from her pretty eyes as Minna, as you know her, simply fucking vanishes.

    You blink.

Then you go through a door at twenty miles an hour. Backwards. Airborne.

Pieces of shattered door tumbling all about, you somersault into the stairs, tumble down the stairs, and hit a landing, then the bannisters, then go through the bannisters into a cloud of shredded houseplant leaves and dirt and pottery shards then go skidding on a wave of dirt down the floor on the ground floor as your bell RING-A-LING A DING A DING WOT WOOT BAM!

Boots stop your skull from colliding with anything else.

"Boots," you say intelligently. One of the aformentioned boots gently flips you over to stare senselessly at the ceiling. You shake your head miserably, groaning with pain. Opening your eyes, you try to make out your road-block, but all you see is spinning stars. Stars, stars, stars. You squeeze your eyes shut, hard, and when you open them the motes of spinning light are merging together and vanishing, the swirling stars departing with the head trauma that spawned them.

Except for those stars, there. Right there. Ten of 'em, in a row, overlapping pairs slowly merging together into just five really bright brass-colored ones on a helmet.

    Wait.

You sniff the air and smell Authority, and your brain stem kicks in.

"HAIL OFFICER ON DECK FULL OF GRACE HALLOWED BE THY BRASS SIR~!" you bellow, snapping a crisp salute right to the bruised part of your face, eliciting a yelp of pain. You straighten your legs and back, snap your hand down crisply and lay at attention just like you were trained for it.

Above you, the face beneath the helmet resolves into a face as the man leans over to study you. He looks you over, then consults the sheet of paper in his hand.

"Well," says General Henry H. Arnold, supreme commander of the Army Air Forces, "you're just crazy enough to be the psychotic SOB I'm supposed to decorate."

    Hey, quick question:

When did you think "and then we joined them in a threesome and fucked and fucked" was the epitome of good writing? Especially since the whole thing would be a fade-to-black "and then they fucked" thing, not only because blatant fapfic is technically BANT on /tg/ to start with these days, but also because I'm just not interested in writing smut-fic here? The dynamics of the situation are all character-based - what counts is how the MC reacts to his "love interest" doing the exact thing he did, which had HIM freaking the hell out over how his "love interest" would react to it.

Anon blundered into a vote for trolling the ever-loving SHIT out of Minna, and you see, that's interesting because it shows the relationship between two characters who are making decisions that have consequences. And that is what writing is all about.

If you want an h-doujin, there's plenty of those in the world already. Hence why people say I've characterized the Witches better then the actual source materiel did, and they like my work better because it has less shameless fanservice - and considering I'm some retard gibbering on /tg/ and pulling shit out of his ass as I go along 50% of the time to make some barely-written quest thread, THAT'S PRETTY SAD.

    tl;dr e-hentai is over thataway

NEXT TIME ON STRIKE WITCHES: TESLA TROLLS OUT WITH HIS MULTIMETER OUT

STRIKE WITCHES will resume THURSDAY, May 17th, USUAL TIME. BE THERE OR ACQUIRE GEOMETRIC IRREGULARITIES.

Just so y'alls don't think I'm being lazy, here's my rough schedule:

    Saturday: Work all night.
Sunday: Off (homework night for Tuesday lab.)
    Monday: Work all Night.
Tuesday: Morning class, then OTHER WORK, THEN I get home.
    Wednesday: Work all night.
    Thursday: QUESTY TIEM
    Friday: QUESTY TIEM REDUX!?
    Saturday: Work 1-7 PM.

Somewhere in there I've got to file papers to run as a precinct delegate and write Wizard and fix the whole house and clean my carry pistol because "open slide, blow out lint" is bad, and I should feel bad for doing only that for three months. Ahem.

Did you say something, pf? My soul was frozen in awe of that image you posted.

Seriously though, Personally, I felt the MC was more likely to start back up trying to "compete" with Krupinski rather than leaving in a huff, but you always know his emotional/mental state better and more clearer than any of us readers, so whatev.

I do kind of wish you'd dick with us a little less. Tear extraction is one thing, but sometimes is seems a bit excessive. I mean, I run a quest too, and while I'm sure I don't pull even, like, a 4th of the readers SWQ does, me and my readers seem to have an okay time without all the jerking around. I mean, would it kill you to just write it to us straight without trolling us more often? If you keep doing it we'll just get desensitized.

I have no idea what "drowtales" is, but, just a shot in the dark here, and somewhat informed by the instinctive horror a name like "drowtales" inspires, it's equivalent to saying that because nobody actually fucks in the Strike Witches anime, it's not shameless fanservice.

*December 20, 1942, the North Sea*

“Beautiful day for a smoke, isn’t it?”

“…it’s overcast and cold as fuck.”

“Exactly! Since it’s so shitty outside, you can dodge paperwork for the longest time due to them thinking that you couldn’t possibly be outside in this mess!”

“That is a really shitty attitude for a senior officer to have.”

Mackintosh paused by one of the secondary battery’s guns to spare a better look at his companion. “Jesus Christ, Lawrence. I haven’t talked to you in about a week, and when I do you’re in some kind of funk. What’s eating you up?”

Wright took a drag on his cigarette before he turned to look Mackintosh dead in the eye. “Form P-E-N-1-5?! Really?! Really, Nick?! Santiago had gathered all of the other officers in the detachment for when I returned. I haven’t felt like that big of a fool since third grade!”

A look of surprise crossed Mackintosh’s face, that quickly decayed into laughter. “Is that all?” he gasped through some chuckles. “That ain’t shit, man! That’s just their way of welcoming you to the ship! Everybody has to go through with it, and it’s all in good fun. You’ll get to send the new guy on a wild goose chase too, someday,” He tapped his ashes, and then clapped his friend on the shoulder. “Don’t brood too much about it,” With a smile, Mackintosh turned and strolled over to the deck railing to take a look at the swells. Wright sighed and followed.

I'm of the opinion that any romance story with adults should have some sex, not so much for the fanservice factor but the fact it is more or less... the climax of the romance arc.

Then again given the nature of quest threads, perhaps this is for the best seeing how things are going in this story (herps gonna derp) And I know you're not avoiding it for some artsy bullshit reason.

“You know, you actually lucked out some,” Mackintosh said.

“How so? Is the normal welcoming committee a soap party?”

“No. I mean your timing,” Mackintosh replied as he flicked his cigarette into the ocean. “Just got a message from Admiral Kimmel in earlier today.”

    “Oh? What’d he say?”

“We’re being rotated out. The Tennessee is inbound right now, and will arrive in theatre in a few days. Admiral Lee will transfer his flag, and then we’ll head home to Brooklyn for refit. And here’s where it gets good: after we leave the yard, we’re replacing the Mississippi on the Eastern Seaboard patrol.”

    “Does that mean…?”

“Yep. We’re going to be US-based. All of this time on frontline duty is going to pay off. We’ve been fighting since Day One at Pearl. It’s about time we got some rest. Best part for you is that you didn’t have to put up with most of that shit. Just about a month across the Pond, and then back home.

“Not that we’re bitter or anything,” he hastily clarified. “We could hardly give a fuck that you’re riding the coattails. Not your fault. Just saying how damn lucky you actually are.”

“Riiiight… I’ll be sure to keep that in mind,” said Wright as he cast a suspicious glance at his companion. As he went to flick his cigarette overboard, something caught his eye. “Hey Nick, I saw something white out there.”

“They’re called ‘swells’, Lawrence. It’s just a whitecap.”

“Cut the shit, Nick! Look!” He shouted as he pointed out over the side. “There it is again! There’s something out there!”

Mackintosh follows Wright’s finger to where he was pointing, and his eye went wide. “Jesus Jew-Balled Christ…Man Overboard! MAN OVERBOARD, PORT SIDE!” he yelled in horror at the bridge as he threw his cover aside.
Wright continued to scream up at the bridge wing with more crewmen on deck joining in, but as a tie flew past his face he turned back to see Mackintosh had stripped down to his slacks and undershirt.

“Nick?! What the fuck are you doing?!”

“Just keep calling up until they respond! I’m just going to take more proactive measures!” Without a word more, Mackintosh turned and took a running swan dive over the railing.

“Nick, you STUPID MOTHERFU-“ is all he heard before a thousand knives stabbing him in the face cut off the sounds of the world. As he broke the surface once more, he heard several people calling out to him from the deck, but he ignored them as he sought out the man in the water. Catching a glimpse of him once more, he started swimming as fast as he could in that direction as the California’s whistle finally began to blast out three long tones.

As the minutes slowly drug by, the cold stabbed deeper and deeper into Mackintosh’s body as he swam, but he paid it no heed. As he caught another glimpse of the poor bastard in the water, he called out hoping to calm him some if he was still alive. “Hey buddy! Don’t worry, I’m coming! Just hang on!” With a final push, he arrived at the white coat and threw its owner’s arm over his shoulder as he began to tread water. “Alright! Got you! Just hang on a few more minutes Mac, and a boat…will…” He trailed off as he actually looked down at the person he just threw over his shoulder, who appeared to have cat ears on her head. “What the fu…you’re a witch! What the hell are you doing way out here?!”

At that, the witch roused from unconsciousness as if she subconsciously knew she didn’t need to be in survival mode any longer. As she tracked her eyes up, she started and muttered in mute shock “Cyclope de la Mer…?”

Mackintosh spared a inquisitorial glance down at her before going back to trying to keep himself visible to his ship. “HEY! Over here! She’s a witch! Hurry up you lazy bastards! Come on!”

A twinge of moment out of the corner of his eye catches him off guard. Before he can ask what she was doing, the witch muttered something in French, and then deployed a weak shield with her raised arm.

The crewmen working on getting the launch in the water seemed to move much faster after that.

About ten minutes later, the launch was hauled back onboard the California with sickbay teams standing and waiting for them. As the launch was lowered back into its cradle, Mackintosh hazily made out the CMO and Captain Bunkley standing amongst the teams. Before the seaman could finish lashing down the boat, the CMO had vaulted over the side, strode up to where Mackintosh was laying covered in blankets, and backhanded him hard across the face.

“You. Fucking. *IDIOT*!” the CMO roared. “What in the name of God’s Blue Earth were you *thinking*?! Oh wait, you NEVER think, Mr. ‘I’m-going-to-tear-out-my-own-fucking-eye’! You jumped into the North Sea in the dead of Winter! You’ll be lucky if you don’t catch pneumonia! Just…why?!”

“Fleet…Problem…XXI…” croaked out Mackintosh, as he rolled over and lifted his eyepatch to drain his empty eye socket.

    “What?”

Captain Bunkley cleared his throat. “We lost a man overboard in April of 1940 while we were taking part in Fleet Problem XXI.”

“Yes,” coughed Mackintosh from where he lay. “I watched that poor bastard go under while I just stood at the railing, and I swore I was never going to just stand idly and watch someone drown again, even if it was the last thing I did.”

As that little spat was going on, nobody noticed the witch getting up. It took her actually sounding off to report to get them to pay attention. “Excuse me, are you the captain of this vessel?” She popped off a weak salute. “Lieutenant de vaisseau Georgette Lemare, Marine nationale. I just escaped the sinking of my vessel, and my captain’s last orders were to warn you of a trio of dreadnoughts to the south. Well,” she said as a weak smirk crossed her face, “duo, now. And here is my ship’s log,” she said as she produced the waterproof bag…and then promptly passed out into the arms of the sailors who were finally paying attention.

“Alright, get those two down to sickbay,” Captain Bunkley ordered. “Get Adams down there and tell her not to leave this girl’s side until I tell her to. And call the aviation detachment and tell Lt. Nixon to get his Quarterdeck Messerschmitt ready. We’ve got squids to hunt.”

See, that's what I thought, going in. My friends dragged me kicking and screaming through Strike Witches. It took months because I needed a week or two between episodes. Fucking hated it, and the worst part was that I wanted to like it, because of the attentiveness to history and the fun spins (like Hartmann's hat-swipe and Yeager breaking the sound barrier). But no, every neat little design or interesting idea was matched with loli pantsu bullshit.

Then I saw SWQ, and thought "huh, maybe they'd like that." I've been trying to neckbeardize those friends for years and thought this might be my chance, so after seeing the threads a couple of times I clicked one and gave it a whirl.

    My turn!

"My fugghin... everyfing..." Karl slowly came to, the world dark and wobbly. As he spoke, dirt filled his mouth, and his sluggish mind was shocked awake. Some dumbass had figured him dead and buried him alive. Oh fuck no. Panicking, he flung his hands out and broke the ground. Someone spoke up.

"Sir? Sir! Get down and keep quiet!" One of the troopers, Karl couldn't see who, pushed him back into the dirt. He tried to roll out from under his hand, but the voice stopped him. "We're surrounded, but they don't know it." His blood, which had been raging hot at the indignity of his subordinates pushing him into the dirt, froze to ice.

Karl kept his voice to a whisper. "Surrounded?"

"Not quite. More like their line pushed past us and kept going. Still some rearguard around though, so keep down and keep quiet." Karl let himself sink back into the mud, as his soul sank down even further. If the Martians were pushing past this line, there was only a couple dozen miles to the final defensive lines of Germany, and they weren't as battle-hardened as the front.

He sure hoped they finished that "European Wall" concept they had come up with during the time they were still killing humans. That'd stop them in their... tentacle-covers. Did they even wear things over their tentacles? Shaking himself out of it, Karl turned his head to see who was on his left and suddenly felt a pang of regret that he had never made an effort to learn names. Footsloggers like him got moved around so often that you generally didn't bother to find out who was who. Rank would have to do here. "Private, can you see anything?"

"Yeah, I've been playing dead here and I gotta say, not blinking for this long is a bitch."

"Quit whining, I just woke up thinking I'd been buried. What's out there?"

"Whole lotta nothin'. Been a whole lotta nothin' for the past fifteen minutes. Thank god for artillery holes, eh? Easy places to keep down in."

Karl spent a bit mulling it over in his head. Martians moved pretty fast when they were on the attack, those tripods were the slowest things they had and they were getting phased out in favor of tanks that mimicked Human build. Fifteen minutes of nothing probably meant they were in the clear. "Alright. I'm gonna stick my helmet up and see if it catches anything. Where is it anyways?"

"Here sir." One of the men tossed it to him. He went to put it on his head but paused when he saw it. It had crumpled in the front, the rounded steel now misshapen with a deep hole where the Martian had shot him, but held. A piece of a mini-rocket was lodged in the indentation. There was no way he could've lived through that.

    "How the..."

"It flew off your head when the mini hit. Lucky as hell, you are. That's one good helmet too. Shame it's ruined."

"Yeah. Lucky. Goddamn that was close." Running a hand over his forehead to make sure that it was still there, Karl slowly rose his helmet above the lip of the artillery-hole they were in, waiting to see if it'd catch a mini-rocket for his trouble. Nothing. He pushed it a little higher and moved it around. Still nothing. Taking a deep breath, he peeked over the edge. Nothing. No mini-rocket drilled through his skull, no mazer cooked his brain inside out, no tripod impaled him on-

Satisfied, Karl stood up. "Boys, I think we're good. Just keep the noise down, we'll try to break out of here and link up with anyone else." Karl strapped the helmet to his pack. Never know when you need to brain a squid with your helmet. He'd done it three times already. Fucking things were better than bayonets.

The rest of the squad stood up. Four men were left alive, himself included. Karl felt that he should be sad about the loss, but he was too happy that he had survived. An artillery bombardment, a perfect shot to the noggin, the enemy overtaking his position, and he was still breathing.

He took an extra deep breath. One of the men took notice.

    "Sir? Orders?"

Giving it some thought, Karl decided that four men behind enemy lines could probably wreak a bit of havoc, blowing up roads and whatnot, but they needed to coordinate with HQ. "Move out and search our lines. Try to find anyone with a working radio." Some of the men were dubious, but they fanned out and started looking through the ruined mess that was once the most heavily fortified terrain east of Berlin.

Shuffling through buried trenchworks, swamped with mud and ruined bodies, was not Karl's idea of fun. It was dirty, sweaty, and on occasion, bloody. Never his own blood, though.

After a good ten minutes of searching, he finally rolled over a body and found his prize. A field radio, banged up but still in good condition, thanks to the chap who'd been shielding it. Karl pulled it up and started flipping switches before he realized he had absolutely no idea what he was doing. "Hey I found one, any of you guys a radioman?"

They all ran over to him, and thankfully one of them stepped up. After he'd gotten it working, Karl took the radio. With any luck, the Martians wouldn't be scanning for radio signals behind their lines. Rattling off a few codephrases, he finally got what he hoped for: Command.

"Well damn, how are you still alive in there?" They seemed as surprised as he was to find out that people could live through a Martian push.

"Got KO'd and fell into an artillery-hole. Woke up. There's four of us left. Requesting orders sir."

As the others watched, Karl's eyes seemed to grow so large they threatened to pop out of his head. "Can you repeat that sir?" "Yes sir, I understand." "How far, sir?" "Yes, sir. We're on it." Putting the radio down, Karl let his head fall into his hands.

    "How bad is it sir?"

With a sigh, Karl told them the news. "Pretty bad. Martians are pushing hard and everyone is falling back to the Wall. Fortunately it's been ready so we'll see what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object. We, on the other hand, aren't heading home."

That drew looks of surprise. "Sir? What do you mean? We're out in the middle of nowhere and-"

"Apparently a witch was shot down and crashed nearby. With the enemy push, we're the only people in the area. Our new mission is to go get her."

She was deep in enemy territory, strikers trashed, magic half-gone, wounded, in the middle of the woods, had just seen her wingmate and friend killed in an explosion, and was out of breath and out of will. This was just too much for a nineteen year old girl. She'd managed to fight off the first group of squids that tried to take her, 8mm machinegun fire ripped through them while their mini-rockets and masers couldn't penetrate her shield. But she'd landed badly and had a nice set of gashes along her legs to show for it.

"Fucking eggheads, if they're so smart why don't... they put padding on the fucking strikers..."

Falling down against a tree, Viviane tried to hold back the urge to scream. There were horror stories about what people did to people, whatever these Martians would do if they...

No. If they got that close, she'd eat a bullet. Content with her decision, she closed her eyes and tried to get some rest. Maybe she could sneak out of this, but she wasn't getting anywhere tired.

5 Miles off the coast of Vancouver Island

Two witches flew lazily over the Pacific. For miles around there was nothing but blue, only broken by the horizon dividing the deep sapphire of the ocean from the soft azure of the sky.

A voice crackled in on the radio breaking the silence.

    “See anything?”

The taller and older of the two witches brought her hand up to her earpiece to respond.

“Whole lotta nothin'. It's like there's more of it every day. Got any threes?”

    “Gotcha, Red. Go fish.”

The taller witch, 'Red', had very long, very red hair that stopped just above the waist. She carried an air of experience, but the words “refined” or “elegant” weren't ones that could describe her. The smaller witch that accompanied her had short, dark hair and looked far more fragile, almost doll-like. She was also very confused.

“Um, Flight Lieutenant, what are you doing?”

“Playin' 'Go Fish'. What kind of savage doesn't know 'Go Fish'?”

“But, you don't have any cards and we're in the middle of the ocean.”

“It's like this, newbie. Me an' Rosie an' Jane have a system. Jane's the referee. She keeps track of who has what cards and what we pick up. It's pretty simple once you get used to it. Speaking of,” she put her hand up to her earpiece, “Jane. Card.”

The radio crackled to life, and a new, very bored sounding voice replied, “You got another three. That makes a pair.”

'Red' did a quick fist pump accompanied by a “Hells yes!” smiling smugly to herself.

The small witch spoke up again, “Flight lieutenant, I don't really und-”

“Alright kiddo, listen here. Take a look out there,” 'Red' gestured out to the ocean, “and tell me what you see.”

    “Uh, water?”

    “And?”

    “The sky. Clouds?”

    “Go on.”

    “And, nothing els-”

“Exactly! Nothing! Our job is to make sure the nothing stays nothing and doesn't do something. If the nothing does something we have to find something to do about the something and make it go back to doing nothing. Welcome to the Pacific North-West. This is what we do. You want to go get shot to hell, be my guest. But me? I've been there and I'm done. Fought in the States, over the Lakes, up the Seaway, and now I'm on vacation. Nothing puts the mind at ease like a few thousand miles between you and the little green men.”

“That seems a bit,” she paused to find a word that was both appropriate and polite, “irresponsible.”

“Hi there. I'm Flight Lieutenant Scarlet Harrison. Eighteen years old. I strap a pair of tiny airplanes to my legs and fight octopuses from outer space. Welcome to the Demon Squadron, kiddo.”

The rest of the patrol continued in an awkward silence, broken only by updates every fifteen minutes. Scarlet lost at Go Fish with a single card left.

Scarlet Harrison sat in a chair in the office of her commanding officer.

“So that's about the jist of it. Zero incidents. There's nothing out here.”

The blonde witch behind the desk tented her fingers and brought her forehead down to them. She let out a quiet sigh and spoke.

“You're sure? Nothing at all unusual.”

“Besides the unusual amount of sky and ocean? No. Ain't seen shit.”

“This doesn't make sense. They wouldn't just put us out here for nothing.”

“Rosie, listen. This isn't like the States. We did our job, so what if we get rewarded and land some low-stress job out here in the boonies? Personally, I'm enjoying our retirement. You know, I haven't fired my gun once since we got here?”

The blond, Rosie, lifted her head and stared into Scarlet's eyes.

“We've only been here for a week. It was barely a month ago that we were running ground-attack missions on martian tanks in Kansas. Now, nothing. Just sitting around on our asses while the rest of the war keeps moving.”
    >> archivalfag 05/12/12(Sat)00:35 No.19074397
“Whatever. Listen, whenever you get some time and you're not,” Scarlet glanced at the few sheets of paper on Rosie's desk, “Er, swamped in paperwork, come down and just hang out with us, have a drink or two. Jane's barely seen you since we got here and you've talked to Woody all of once.”

The blond witch turned around in her chair and stared out the window, across the Georgia Strait and toward the mainland.

“Yeah, I'll,” she paused to let out another deep sigh, “I'll do that.”

“ For fuck's sake, stop being so melodramatic. You used to hate fighting, now you miss it? Christ, Rosie. What happened to you?”

Scarlet could only shake her head as she left the room, being sure to slam the door as she left – the embarrassment of a young man standing out side waiting to see the commanding officer. Her younger wingman who was also waiting outside formed up beside her.

“So, uh, h-how did it go?”

“Rosie's being a cunt and I don't know why. We finally get out and now she wants back in. The fuck is her problem?”

“Maybe she just wants to help fight?”

“Probably. But it doesn't make my life any easier to have to coddle the goddamn whiny CO.”

“So you're just going to leave her? That's not really what friends should do.”

“No, no, no, kiddo. You misunderstand,” the tall witch put on a devilish grin, slapping her arm down around the other witch's shoulders, “what we're gonna do is we're gonna go find Jane and then we're gonna go get a witch's best friend.”

    “Diamonds?”

“Booze. Real Canadian beer. She hasn't had anything but American piss water for the past two years. 'bout time we reminded her who she was, eh?”

Five minutes later, Scarlet dramatically kicked in the door to the witch's living quarters alongside a terrified, and as of yet unnamed, witch.

    “Jane! Where's yer stash!”

At the same time as the door was brutally annihilated, a bespectacled witch sitting at a table was scared out of her chair, kicking over the table holding a substantial quantity of cards which now fluttered about the room while the witch, Jane, groaned and stumbled to her feet.

    “Which stash?”

“Wait a second. Victoria's just over there! We should, we should, uh, I know it's there somewhe- WE SHOULD GO TO YOUR HOUSE! We can get our strikers and go have a party or something!”

“Oh, oh dear. Please no. Please lord no. Let's not go to my house. How about, um, we go to,” Woody thought for a moment, desperately trying to find something that would seem more interesting, “how about we go to your room! I'm sure you have lots of cool stuff!”

“That's a great idea! Wait, you just got here today. I forgot to tell you! We're roommates! Yaaay!”

It was in that moment that Woody had a terrible realization about her life. She was going to die here. Scarlet got up, walked around the table, took hold of Woody's shoulder and began dragging her off. Woody solemnly obliged.

As she dragged her companion through the halls of Station Comox, Scarlet stumbled and slurred a through stories of the battles over the Great Lakes.

“And THAT'S how me and Rosie took out on of them alium dreadnaughts! True story.”

    “Just the two of you?”

“Ayup! 'cept we kept saying the other did it, so neither of us got the credit.”

“That's... that's actually impressive. I would have thought you'd be the type to take the credit for yourself.”

“Whaaaaat? You really thought I was that much of a bitch? Me and Rosie, we's tight. Here we are!”

Scarlet thrust open the door to her room, revealing two beds on either side of a relatively small room, one in state of disrepair once thought unknown to a bed, the other immaculately kept.

“You get the one with all it's bedposts. Your stuff should be put away already, but check the drawers just in case. Especially the panty drawer. Report anything missing to Rosie. Especially panties. The engineers and pilots have this habit of using them like currency. They need to be taught that such behaviour will not be tolerated!”

Scarlet thrust a finger into the air to punctuate the statement, and promptly fell asleep. Woody delicately placed a blanket over her and patted her head.

    January 17th, 1943 21:00

Hours later, Scarlet and Woody were deep into a game of Crazy Eights when someone daintily knocked on the door.

“Are you two in there?” Jane shouted from outside.

“Yeah, why are you yelling?” Scarlet shouted back.

Jane cautiously opened the door. She was alone.

“You, uh, you two know anything about what's going on outside?”

“Well I've been napping and Woody's been fondling me in my sleep or something. So, no. Why?”

“There are four Shermans parked on base.”

“I'm sorry, what FUCK did you just say?”

“Shermans. American ones. Outside. Rosie's gone to find whoever's in charge of them.”

“So, wait, are they for us? The fuck are they doing out here?”

“No clue. Rosie will probably want you with her. You're good at,” Jane paused for a moment,” persuading others.”

“Fine, but if I have to deal with this shit, so do you two. Come on.”

The trio sauntered down the halls, Scarlet slouching and grumbling with her hands in her pockets, Jane not giving a single fuck, no sir, not her, and Woody trying desperately to find a Sherman, whatever that was, in the halls.

Upon exiting the base, the girls were met with the sight of four M4A1 Sherman tanks and a covered truck behind the gate and an angry Rosie arguing with an equally upset truck driver. Scarlet left the other two witches behind and strode up behind Rosie, taking exaggerated steps and letting out a mighty whistle.

“Somethin' we can help you boys with?”

The truck looked her up and down, suddenly put off balance by the appearance of four beautiful young girls.

“Uh, yeah. You're CO here won't let us in. You don't want don't want to give the enemy a hundred and twenty tons of middle finger?”

“Hell yeah I do, but you guys sure you got the right base? We ain't seen shit out here.”

“This ain't Comox? Like I've been telling blondie, there was a memo that we'd be here. Should have got here this morning. We just sent a guy to go check.”

“I think I remember that. There was that guy with something around noon. Think it was him?”

“I... maybe. I was about to read it but the siren went off and I haven't been back since. But honestly, one day of warning?”

“It's all in the letter, ma'am. We were told specifically to come right after sunset, four Shermans and the special cargo.”

Scarlet and Rosie both opened their mouths to say something, but a boyish but definitely female voice shouted from the back of the truck.

“WHAT'S THE HOLD UP, RICKY? I GOT SHIT TO DO.”

Scarlet and Rosie both looked at each other and shared an expression that said 'Oh hell no.' At the same moment, the runner sent to fetch the envelope returned. Rosie grabbed it from him, quickly flipping through the notes.

“Oh my. It's all here, then. Shermans and...”

    “A witch.” Scarlet grumbled.

    “Yes, how did you know?”

    “She's heading this way.”

Glowing with magic in the night, two pointed dog ears and curled tail showing from under her uniform, the American witch kicked upon the gate with a resounding CLANG and strode over to the two senior witches. She relatively short compared to Scarlet and Rosie, but walked with a cocky swagger, aviators perched on her short red hair. Coming to a halt a few feet away from the group, performing a quick nod to knock the glasses onto her face, she struck a pose with her hand on her hip and chin held high.

    “Problem, ladies?”

Being the only one who wasn't shocked into silence by this, Scarlet was first to respond.

“And who the fuck are you supposed to be, tiny?”

“I'll have you know you're speaking to future top ace Riley Bong, miss...”

“Flight Lieutenant Scarlet Harrison. What'd you do get sent out here?”

“How di- I mean, I didn't do anything. I don't know what you're talking about.”

“How many kills you got?” Scarlet said, grabbing Rosie's paper and quickly skimmed it over.

    “Five.”

    “Good enough. Welcome aboard, Bing.”

    “It's Bong.”

    “Ma'am.”

    “What?”

“That's 'ma'am' to you, Pilot Officer Bing.”

    “I, um, I'm sorry. Uh, ma'am. And it's Bong, ma'am.”

“Says here you pulled a few stunts in training and got left behind.”

At that, the small American's eyes began to water and tears started to stream down her face.

“I jus- I just wanted them to think I was co-cool, t-too!” She managed to get out before breaking down in sobs. Rosie couldn't help but hug her, patting her head and cooing motherly “There, there”s. Scarlet simply rolled her eyes and looked over the paper some more. It took her a few looks over before she noticed that there were, in fact, two sheets, the second having been stuck to the first while the ink was still fresh. Scarlet began reading it, her eyes growing wider and wider as she got lower on the page.

“R-Rosie. You REALLY should read this.”

Scarlet handed the paper to her, Riley's head still buried in her chest. Her eyes acted in much the same manner as Scarlet's had.

“American... British... Japanese... FIVE HUNDRED NINTH JOINT FIGHTER WING?!”

Jane and Woody, who had been preoccupied with oggling and being oggled by the Americans, suddenly snapped around to look at Rosie. Scarlet just stared at the ground, defeated.

“Scarlet. I'm going to need to take you up on your offer. We're gonna need a lot of drinks.”

“To the new Demon Squadron, then.”

“Alright, now move her forward. Slowly.”
Thumbing her controls, the pilot directed the craft forward.
“Good. Now ease her back...” her earpiece chattered.
Obligingly, she reversed direction. The machine lazily came to a stop before reversing. The lethargy of its movements would bore any other spectator, but the man behind the glass couldn't decide if he should keep his attention on his clipboard or the test unit. For him, this was yet another exciting day spent testing their latest vehicle: the Deep Submersible Strike Unit. Smiling with anticipation, he keyed the mic again.
“Good! That concludes the preliminary propulsion tests. Get yourself vertical, Cleo. Flight tests are up next.”
On the other side of the safety glass, Torpedoman's Mate C W Kukyendall fought against the water and the machine's strange center of mass. Reluctantly, the substriker oriented itself vertical. Kukyendall was an eager participant. Already at home in the water, she knew when she applied that she had a fair chance of being chosen for testing. Having few family connections or friends, she knew she had a great chance of being chosen. It's rare to find such an expendable witch.

4chan doesn't like tabs. I recommend you read the pastebin.

"Are you ready yet? This thing doesn't balance worth shit," Kukyendall cued in.
"Alright, Chief. Bring her up, slow and steady. You remember the settings, right?"
Kukyendall rolled her eyes, safe from reprimand; the test helmet still fogged up like a bitch when she spoke. The eggheads better figure out a way to fix that quick, she thought to herself. Manipulating the handlebar-like controls of the striker, she placed it in flight mode. According to the engineers, this mode reconfigured parts of the magic engine to better handle the properties of air for flight; they always muttered about heat dissipation and fluid dynamics when she asked. To her, it did fuck all.
"Careful, Cleo! That thing's expensive!" the test director shouted, alarmed.
"I've got it under control, Doc. Don't get your panties in a bunch," she replied.
"The hell you do. You said it yourself, the thing's a bitch to balance. Take it easy!"
Kukyendall grunted. He was right; the machine was fighting her, trying to lay flat on its belly. Using her flippers, she was just barely keeping it steady a few feet above the pool, but if she rose a little bit higher...Shit! Her flippers no longer catching water, the substriker was free to execute a marvelous flip as it came crashing down. What a spectacular belly flop, Kukyendall thought as she tried to ignore her stinging torso. Behind that now-wet safety glass, the director kneaded his brow. Kukyendall angrily pulled herself to the side of the pool, stripping herself of the unit; the director's head began to ache.

"It's a mini-submarine! How am I supposed to fly the damned thing?" Kukyendall complained, pouring out some coffee from the percolator.
    "It's a submersible one-man strike unit, not a sub."
"Whatever! Don't give me that look, Doc. It's not my fault you want me to fly a big underwater backpack. Just leave it in the water where it belongs."
Sighing, the director set down his coffee.
"Look, the flight capabilities are essential for disengagement. You ladies are too valuable to lose and you know that. When things go sour, you need to be able to get out. Flight mode will offer you a quick way to bug out of a bad situation. If you're stuck slow-boating underwater, they could pick you off. Hell, they could just wait until you run out of air. These tests are essential for the safety of both yourself and future pilots. Can you try taking them more seriously?"
"I am taking them more seriously, Doc. I love testing this thing, I really do. It's just... awkward! You're whispering instructions into my ear from the next room over. You can't even begin to understand how difficult it is to struggle with the substriker." Kukyendall pointed back at the unit as it did its best impression of a capsized cruise liner.

Kukyendall paused to take a sip of her coffee. "Look, Doc, you want me to give this thing a good test? Give me the ocean, not some tiny aquarium."
The director looked away, trying to keep his face straight as a smile cracked through. Kukyendall's eyes spotted it and widened.
"You mean-!? Yes! It's about time, Doc!" she shouted, ecstatic. "You eggheads and your stupid tests! I thought you'd never let me take her out for a spin!"
"Hey, don't look at me; I've been fighting to get it field tested from day one. It took some serious convincing, but I managed to get the top brass to let their precious project get out in the open," he said, sipping his coffee. "You'll be meeting up with a few other witches for ocean testing. The USS Tullibee will be here in about two weeks to pick you up. From there, it's a long and watery trip to Hawaii to pickup the other pilots and the latest units-h
Kukyendall choked on her coffee. "Wait, go back. Other witches? Other pilots?" she sputtered, beating her chest.
"Yes. You're picking up a trio in Hawaii. Harumi Ogawa, Rae Caulders, and Henrieta Falkowska."
Wiping some coffee off her chin, Kukyendall groaned. "We're picking up some sparkles? I knew there'd be a catch..."

"Hey now, don't be like that. Aren't you one of them?"
    "Yeah, one. More's a problem."
    "They're comrades, Cleo."
"They're egotistical hotheads is what they are."
    "Does that include yourself?"
    "Why wouldn't it?"
Sighing, the director suppressed an urge to get the last word. Cleona was his favorite test pilot so far and they seemed to be getting along rather well, but he still had no idea why she didn't like other witches. "Look, you're going to have some company. The USS Tullibee will be here in two weeks. You're going to Hawaii. After that, you're going to head to Australia, conducting tests along the way. You don't have to like it."
Sighing, Kukyendall hung her head. "First sparkles, now Oz? You're doing your damnedest to screw up a good thing, Doc." The director merely smiled and continued drinking his coffee.

Leading Kukyendall around his ship, Commander Charles Brindupke had little problem showing his pride in the vessel and her crew. "You'll find that conditions are a little bit nicer on-board than the old Sargos and Tambor subs you're familiar with. We've a bit more girth for fuel and length for your new strikers." Eager to talk about his pride and joy, it almost seemed like he was talking to himself, not giving an informal tour. "We've got everything: air conditioning, refrigeration, fresh water, washing machines... Hell, we've even got a bunk for every sailor. Practically a cruise ship, huh?" he gestured, smiling. Well, Kukyendall thought, I can't fault him for enthusiasm.

"And how does all this luxury and girth affect the ship's handling? I'd rather be alive and sweating than cool and dead," she asked.
"Oh, I can't deny that she's a might bit chubbier and harder to turn, but it's nothing we can't handle! Hell, you'll probably be safer even with the slower maneuvers; the AC dehumidifies the air. We don't get condensation dripping into the electrics. You know how dangerous those electrical fires are, right?"
"Oh, certainly." She'd never actually had to fight an underwater fire, but Kukyendall had heard her fair share of horror stories.
Commander Brindupke continued his enthusiastic tour of the Tullibee, placing great emphasis on various minutiae that separated it from others of her class. The Tullibee was a recently-built Gato-class submarine. During construction, they changed plans and added about another five meters to her length to make room for a pressure compartment and exit tubes, among other things. She was still a Gato, but just barely.
"And here's the Ambient Pressurization Chamber. This is where you'll be sleeping before your deeper missions. To help deal with the large amounts of pressure you'll be experiencing, we have you ladies acclimate overnight." Commander Brindupke walked past the next bulkhead, gesturing to Kukyendall. "Here's the launch tubes. Slot right in there and pull the crank. The tube will close behind you, flood, and send you on your merry way."

Kukyendall furrowed her brow. "What about those two? They look like they curve upward."
"Ah, those are for the other pieces of equipment we'll be testing. Chief Kokolova's a bit more familiar with it, if you're curious," he said, pointing to a rough 'n tough Russian inspecting the bulkheads for lord knows what. Chief Kokolova turn at the sound of his name and gave Kukyendall a brief nod before returning to scrutinizing the bulkhead. After a moment, something caught his eye. Chief Kokolova stormed off, yelling for some unfortunate soul.
"Chief takes his job seriously. He's a good man," Commander Brindupke explained, leading Kukyendall out of the chamber. After the tour of the ship, Brindupke introduced Kukyendall to some of the crew she'd be interacting with during testing.
g...And this is Lt. Miranda Kellos. She'll be serving as Radio Witch for your missions. She'll be your only link to the Tullibee during missions, so try to get along."
Lt. Miranda Kellos was a young officer, radiating eagerness and potential. Kukyendall started to dismiss her out of hand as just another typical witch when Miranda spoke.
"CPO Kukyendall, I've heard about you from some of the enlisted personnel. I have to say I'm a little eager to be working with you. It may be a bit presumptuous of me, but I admire what I've heard of your work ethic," she said, holding out her hand.
Kukyendall blinked. Her work ethic? She just did what needed doing. If that made her impressive in the eyes of others... Kukyendall took a deep breath before responding, trying to decide if she should be happy at the compliment or annoyed with the apparent low standards to which others held themselves. Deciding the former, she took Miranda's hand and gave it a firm shake.

"I just do what we all should be doing. Nothing more and nothing less, Lt. Kellos."
"Then you're already ahead of most of us," Miranda replied. Surprised at such candid acknowledgment of laziness in some parts of the service, Kukyendall found a smile forming on her lips.
Well, she thought, I guess witches can't all be bad.
Commander Brindupke interrupted. "Now, technically you're not quite part of our chain of command here, affording you some leeway you wouldn't normally have," he began, fully aware of Kukyendall's official assignment to the substriker project, not the Tullibee. "That said, you know how it is on a sub. We'll be expecting to see some results from your work."
Slightly offended, Kukyendall responded quickly. "You won't have to worry about that, Sir. I fully expected to be treated as part of your crew until testing began. If I'm not working on the project, I wish to assist in the day-to-day duties of the Tullibee like everyone else."
Brindupke smiled, glad to see she wouldn't be trying to use her status and unique position as test pilot (and more importantly, as a witch) to weasel out of being a sailor. "Glad to hear it. Now get yourself squared away, Chief. We're on a schedule."
Kukyendall saluted the Commander and exited the room. She couldn't wait to get started.

    ---

"This model might be different from what you're used to testing! In order to address some of the more consistent complaints during testing, the egg-heads up top have decided to replace the flippers with propeller 'strikers' equipped with a magic engine. This means we'll have better balance and top speed, but we'll be burning through our magic more quickly, so watch yourself. You don't want to find yourself without your sparkles in this heavy thing."

Lieutenants Harumi Ogawa, Rae Caulders, and Sub-Lieutenant Henrieta Falkowska listened closely to the enlisted witch giving the “tour” of the new substriker. The new unit was pretty similar to the test unit, but with a slightly more rugged look. To aid aiming, the torpedo pack was no longer mounted to the substriker itself, making more room for air-tanks and mines. Instead, the pack was now a piece of equipment of its own, appearing like some sort of mechanical tonfa.
"Overall it's much closer to what we'll eventually be using in the field. The egg-heads say this is pretty close to the final design and performance, so get used to them." CPO Kukyendall stepped down, allowing the rugged form of Chief Kokolova to take center stage.
"The substriker is a modular underwater craft with multiple components. However, we're not entirely sure how useful they'll be as the Martians seem to have trouble swimming."
Henrieta let out a stifled giggle, drawing the stares of her fellow test pilots...and the frightfully large Russian. She quickly quieted down, staring at a point between her feet.

"In order to hedge our bets, we've also got what the techs are calling a skimmer. I know two of you are familiar with the idea already, but I'm not being paid to sit around and look tough! The skimmer is made of two parts: a cut-down substriker backpack and an amphibious 'mini-striker.' The pack handles breathing and underwater movement. The striker handles flight. With any luck, you'll be bobbing in and out of the water so fast the Martians won't know what hit 'em. The downside? Don't go thinking you'll be soaring like your striker buddies or swimming like your subwitch friends here." Kokolova gave each of the three newcomers to the Tullibee a stern look. "I mean it. I might not be a witch, but I know you don't want to tumble out of the sky onto water so fast it feels like concrete or get crushed as you suffocate under water. The skimmer's made for the border between sea and sky. Nothing else." His eyes were dead serious. Henrieta gulped. She wouldn't forget.

    ---

"So what do you think of the chief?" asked Ogawa, kicking back as she took a bite out of a particularly juicy apple. Witch perks are always nice.
"Which one?" replied Caulders. "The Russian looks like he's been through some shit."
"I was talking about Kukyendall, Rae. Do I look like the kind to go chasing after foreign enlistees?"
"Mentioning Chief Kokolova hardly counts as 'chasing,' Harumi."
"...I think she seems nice," Henrieta said cautiously, unsure of her fellows' opinions.

"Eh? Really? I think she seems a bit up-tight. One of those no-nonsense, business-only types. I just hope she doesn't get on our cases," complained Caulders. "I've the feeling she doesn't like us much."
"You think? She didn't tell us to fuck off, but she certainly wasn't giving us a warm welcome," Ogawa said. "No waves, no nods, hardly a handshake, and she never once gave me a decent look in the eye."
"That's because they're so damned squinty, Harumi!" teased Henrieta, catching a well-aimed apple aimed for her head. "I dunno, I think she's just focusing on her job. There's still a war going on, you know."
"Oh come on, Yetta. She's a test pilot, right? She's probably outside the Tullibee's chain like ourselves. We've nothing to do but test, rest, test, then take a unit back home. What's she got to do that's so damned important?" Ogawa said.
"Maybe she's helping organize and plan the tests. She was on the Tullibee before us, after all."
"I guess that could be it... Still, she should buck up a bit. We're not going to see combat until the testing's over."
"Hah, I knew it! You coward!" accused Caulders, laughing. "You only signed up to get out of the thick of it!"

"Are you kidding? I volunteered for the Pearl Ha-I mean, um..."
As the pair continued their playful banter, Henrieta kept sipping her coffee. Being the youngest of the three, she was a little more reserved in their company. I don't think she's that bad, she thought. I guess I don't know her very well, though... She stirred her drink a few times, thinking. Maybe I'll get to know her during the tests! She smiled, dodging a fruit. "Hey! Watch it!" Ogawa and Caulders payed her no mind and continued their increasingly violent play.

    ---

    "...What are they, Lieutenant?"
"Looks like a small group of Martian ships...I can't recognize what two of them are. The others are just some light escorts, best as we can tell. Two floaters, two skimmers, two swimmers. There's probably a sub around too."
Commander Brindupke stroked his chin. They weren't supposed to encounter any Martian assets during the cruise, which is why they were traveling without escort. A single sub could more easily escape detection for testing vital equipment, or so the official reasoning went. More likely the Navy was stretched a bit too thin to test some company's latest toy with anything more than a single sub. Still, there was no guarantee...
    "What's their heading?"
    >> Kotters !frHeeRur5g 05/12/12(Sat)01:21 No.19074761
    >>19074758
Lt. Kellos studied the enemy ships, knowing what the Commander meant by that question. "It doesn't look like they're heading towards us. In fact, if I didn't know any better... Commander, you might want to take a look yourself." She stood aside, letting Brindupke get at the periscope.
"Well I'll be..." If he didn't know any better, he'd say the Martians were doing the same thing they were. He didn't know much about standard Martian naval operations (and it was probably safe to say the Martians didn't either), but it looked like they were much more concerned with their own ships. A lot of smaller craft were scrambled about the hull of the two swimmers, as if taking measurements. The Martians had always been adverse to ships that actually touched the water, preferring to float their ships. Only recently had they been trying to put them directly on the surface, and this might just be one of those tries right now. "It looks like they're...testing out new ships."
"That would be my assessment as well, Sir."
"Wake the ladies up. We've got another test for them."

    ---

Kukyendall liked working hard. She liked sweat on her brow. She liked being busy. Unfortunately, Kukyendall was also human, and at that very moment she was getting some very human rest. They'd been doing quite a few tests over the past few weeks of their lazy cruise. All kinds of equipment checks, operations checks, tactics, strategies, maneuvers, anything that could tell them more about not only how the substrikers and skimmers would perform in battle, but also where they'd be best used. Needless to say, it was an exhausting experience, even for the hardy Kukyendall.

Ogawa was better off, only ever participating in the tests proper. Piloting her substriker, she followed every command to a T, but afterward she'd slack off and hit her bunk. Being a foreign officer, test pilot, and a witch, no one said anything. Caulders was a little more forthcoming with contributions, but she also liked to hit her bunk early, cramped though it may be. The only one Kukyendall really bothered to get to know was the young Henrieta. Henrieta was a little shy about helping out, but once Kukyendall included her in the daily routine Henrieta could be found assisting in all sorts of small jobs around the Tullibee, much to Kukyendall's delight. Unfortunately, this meant that Henrieta was also tired out.
When the call went out, the only ones ready for immediate sortie were Ogawa and Caulders. When they arrived, they immediately started petitioning Brindupke to figure out what was going on.
"We've got a small Martian test fleet, sitting unaware. It's time for a live-fire combat test."
"You can't be serious, Commander. This is prototype equipment with a single sub for backup," protested Ogawa. "We can't go out."
"You're using equipment that's essentially final, and one sub against a startled bunch of Martians that don't even know how to swim is more than enough backup. Lt. Ogawa, you'll search for an enemy sub, if there is one. Lt. Caulders, you'll focus on the floaters. CPO Kukyendall will hit the swimmers, Sub-Lieutenant Falkowska will assist where needed. Where the devil are they, anyway?"

"Kukyendall and Henrieta were on the late shift last night, Commander. They're still getting ready," Caulders answered.
"Then we'll wait for them before proceeding. Lt. Kellos-"
    "Commander," interrupted Ogawa.
    "Yes?"
"With all due respect, I believe we should launch now."
"Lt. Ogawa, weren't you just complaining about launching at all?"
"If we're going to strike, we should do so quickly, while we have the element of surprise. You can't guarantee that we'll continue to evade detection."
Brindupke stroked his chin. She had a point, and it's not like this Martian test fleet was packing much anti-sub weaponry. Probably. And...the Japs certainly knew about the importance of surprise. He shuddered thinking about the fleet that was so conveniently close by on Mars Day. "Alright, Lt. You've got me convinced. Get out there immediately. Start searching for that sub. Lt. Caulders, don't breach the surface until you start seeing some explosions. We don't want to give the party away quite yet. We'll start our attack shortly. Once you've completed your objectives, come back in for additional orders. The Chief, Sub-lieutenant, and Tullibee can handle the rest."

    >Gatos were big, and this is an even bigger Gato.

Smiling at the thought of a surprise strike, Ogawa snapped a salute and headed off for the launch tubes, Caulders close behind. When they arrived, they quickly suited up. For Caulders it wouldn't be much of a problem, but Ogawa was going to be running deep. Luckily, it turned out that just simple patrols at unacclimated depths were sustainable for at least 30 minutes, depending on the witch. They closed their launch tubes, sealing themselves in a tiny space illuminated only by a faint, eery red light. Grabbing the lever on the side, their tubes started to flood with water. Once full, a final turn of the lever opened the outer hatch. Shields fighting back the pressure, Ogawa and Caulders exited the Tullibee, setting to their tasks.

"Sir, look at this." A tentacle pointed to an indecipherable mess of lights and screens, one of which was blinking.
"So. We've company. More of these... pseudo-psionics. Take us to alert status."
The subordinate Martian made a motion with his tentacles, then carried out his task. The submarine went on alert.

"They're already launched!?" Kukyendall asked incredulously.
"It's important that we keep an element of surprise-"
    "I'm their only radio witch!"
    "I-"
"I'm launching." Kukyendall spun around and exited. Henrieta spouted some apologies and excuses before hurriedly following.
"I...damn," Brindupke swore under his breath. He let the Jap manipulate him. She was a foreign officer. She was a witch. Was that all it took? He knew it was smarter to hold back, launch together as a coordinated force. Dammit. He didn't make Commander pulling stupid stunts like this.
"Sir!" Lt. Kellos' warning wasn't needed. Everyone could feel that. There was an enemy sub, and its sonar just went active. They'd been pinged.
"Torpedoes, ready!" Brindupke ordered, ignoring that sinking feeling. I hope I get a chance to make up for this.

    >IT BEGINS

"AAAAAAAH!" yelled Ogawa. No one could hear her, but it had to be done. The alien sonar ping was loud. Very, very loud, and Ogawa had just found the sub. It was very close. There was a loud clunk as its hull struck Ogawa's helmet. Yes, very, very close. Shrugging off the pain, she reached into her pack, grabbing a pair of limpet mines. Working quickly, she armed them and attached them to the alien sub's hull. With a quick push, she started widening the miniscule gap between herself and the sub. A few more pings jarred her, but she'd already reinforced her shield to bear the brunt of the sonic bursts. Clearing safe distance from the mines, she started celebrating in her head. One more kill on these creatures, she thought with a smile.
Then the ringing in her ears became unbearable and her helmet shattered into thousands of tiny pieces.

    THUMP!
The first of the Tullibee's torpedoes exploded underneath one of the alien skimmers, ships that flirted with the ocean's surface, never quite touching. The ships had a strange effect on the torpedoes, setting them off at just the right point to cause maximum damage. As one of the skimmers began to fall into the ocean, Caulders began her assault. Flying out of the ocean like some sort of water demon, she caught the Martians largely unaware. Tossing explosives everywhere, the swarm of smaller alien craft involved in testing their new wet ships erupted into chaos. Slowly, they began returning fire, but it was no use. Caulders dove into the water any time they started to zero in on her. As they watched the ocean for her to re-emerge, she'd appear from somewhere completely different. Wow, she thought. This thing is even more effective than I thought. Finally remembering her primary objective, she arced back out of the water. Flying up to meet one of the floating ships the Martians were so fond of, she readied a few explosives. As she swept back downwards, a maelstrom of explosions erupted on the ship. It began to fall from the sky, never standing a chance against her.
Exhilarated, she brought up a shield to protect her from the water rushing up to greet her. Weird, she thought. The ocean seems awfully calm for... She quickly reinforced her shield as she realized what was going on. Traveling too fast to pull up and out of the way, she collided with the alien force-field at breakneck speeds. No longer a screaming demon from hell, Caulders was now a crumpled mess atop the Martians' newest toy.

"I'll meet you outside! Hurry up, Yetta!" Kukyendall exclaimed, already closing her tube's door. Henrieta gave her a hurried affirmative before Kukyendall sealed up. Henrieta didn't know what to do. Overwhelmed by the sudden seriousness of the situation, she scrambled as she attempted to get her skimmer equipment on. Finally having accomplished the task, she hopped into her own launch tube, sealing the chamber from flooding as she did. Shaking with adrenaline, she began to pull the flooding lever when a horrific sound echoed through the sub. Henrieta was slammed against the side of the launch tube, disorienting her. Was it an explosion? Did they crash into something? Whatever it was, it wasn't good. She needed to get out. Returning her hand to the lever, she gave it a good tug. It wouldn't budge. What? Nononono-

The faint red light cut out as the hull of the submarine moaned and groaned. Henrieta pounded on the exit hatch, panicking. Not budging, she ran her fingers over the shape of it, trying to figure out what was going on in the pitch dark. Nononononono! It was bent inward, lodged into the tube itself. There was no way the hatch was going to open easily...and the tube was now exposed to the open ocean. She couldn't open the entry hatch without flooding the boat. As if that weren't enough, she could feel the pressure around her going up, requiring more and more magic to keep it at bay.
    I'm stuck. I'm sinking.
Though she would keep banging away at the exit hatch for the next 10 minutes her shield would last against the pressure, Henrieta did take a moment to cry. 15 minutes later, her hatch was still closed.

"Yeah, I'll meet you there!" Henrieta gasped, trying to suit up quickly. Satisfied, Kukyendall sealed her hatch, flooded, and exited the sub. Glancing back, her eyes widened. NO! HENRIET-
An explosion interrupted her thoughts. That was no Martian torpedo. That was one of the Tullibee's coming back around on a circular run. Steeling herself, Kukyendall tore her eyes from the dying submarine and headed for the surface. Surveying the damage to the Martian fleet, she found that there was only a skimmer and swimmer left for her to get at. At least...at least they got a few, she thought silently. Gunning for the skimmer, she let loose a swarm of miniature torpedoes. Their many explosions did little to comfort her as the Martian skimmer tore in half and began sinking. She turned to face the swimmer.

I can live with witches getting KIA, that's part of war, and would probably make the setting better for the witches to actually understand loss.

But there's a different between getting shot down by a martian, and accidentally ramming into a forcefield and breaking your neck.

I'm just worried that your story will turn into one of those crappy grimdark novels that's all "LOOK HOW DARK THIS IS! EVERYONE DIES NOBODY IS HAPPY EVIL WINS FOREVER!" and thinks they're cool and edgy when really it's just offensive.

Put some victory in there with the loss.

I hope Planefag doesn't mind me reposting an email he sent to me about subwitches. You might find it interesting.

    >That sounds pretty good to me! Constantly encountering new, strange designs and unorthodox behavior/construction from the Martians is a big part of the atmosphere (er, as it is,) helping to establish a constantly shifting, mysterious enemy you can't take for granted. As the, er, flying laker might've hinted at.

    >Also, the casualty count is grimdark, and about what you'd expect from a nasty duel like that. And I've always envisioned that being how Witches die; not via attrition, but when everything goes to hell and the thin margin of safety they usually use to bug out with is suddenly and brutally overcome.

    >Do your thing, you crazy writer you.

Particularly the part about the thin margin of safety. I wanted to emphasize that that margin really is tiny, and somewhere there's gotta be some balancing out, a story where they don't miraculously win all the time.

    >>19075066
Don't worry, victory starts in the quest. Truth be told, I didn't want Kukyendall to be alone in this story...but I also didn't want her to have company in the quest. I didn't go in originally saying "I want witches to die," it just kind of became a goal when I realized where I wanted to start the quest.

Honestly id agree with you on all counts. Im really only getting back into SWQ after that whole thing with the basement infodump that was thrown overboard for pointless DRAMA. Its nice to see witches ACTUALLY understanding what loss means. PF has said that these girls exist under an INTENSE amount of PTSD or war-weariness. But i have yet to see it in the main questline in favor of WAIFUS WAIFUING WAIFUS errywhere. The whole thing with Panzers quest actually having its MC almost die was AMAZING and a good breath of fresh air for the whole project. now i have an actually grimdark people can ACTUALLY lose quest to follow. This will be great.

Yeah, it's obvious to even myself that I was rushing through. Too quickly I decided where I wanted to start and where I wanted to end. If I had more time and felt more confident in writing character interactions (I hate writing conversation, I feel like I make it too unnatural), I would have done more during the weeks they spent testing the strikers.

Ogawa's kind of an elitist, the kind of witch Kukyendall hates. Ogawa takes full advantage of her status as a witch. At the same time, she's prideful and likes to prove she's better. She and Kukyendall didn't get along on the cruise.

Caulders is Ogawa's friend, and they're similar. Caulders is a bit more toned down, though, more like what a typical witch would be like. She knows she's different and can get away with things, but doesn't mind helping out. She and Kukyendall had a cool relationship.

Henrieta is the newbie in the group, and eager to please. She's yet to really get a grasp of the privileges granted by being a witch, so she's more flexible and accepting of responsibilities she doesn't necessarily need to have. Kukyendall really took to her, and she to Kukyendall.

Kukyendall is a witch who really values hard work. She made a conscious decision to enlist rather than become an officer, as she wanted to work with the lay-man. She values a hard day's work (something she learned during the depression). Unfortunately, she's biased against other witches and officers, viewing them as people that don't like to get their hands dirty.

I'm responding with "yeah, I would like to have done x", making excuses that may or may not be as true as I'm saying they are, but the important part is that I now know what I need to think about when I write. Many thanks to you guys for pointing this stuff out. I don't really particularly like writing grimdark shit. I was actually surprised when Planefag called the entire idea grimdark; I hadn't considered it at all. Hopefully, with a few people like you watching my shit, I can write stories where the MC doesn't necessarily have to succeed without going full retard and diving into nothing but grimdark.

Even if dialogue feels unnatural, try doing it.

Not trying to hate, but your fic reminded me of a show where they introduce this really nice secretary, spend like 5 minutes building her up as a character, then have her killed brutally.

Like, needlessly violent. Why are we being shown this? Should we feel bad for a character we met 5 minutes ago?

If you're gonna do death, it should be faceless mooks to provide a number, or characters we've gotten attached to for an emotional toll.

Showing a random characters death and detailing it is trying to TELL the audience that they should feel sad and shocked, and people don't like having their emotions manipulated that way.

the only way to break the un-natural feeling of the dialogue is to write a serious version to define what you want to say , then a ridiculous, overt the top version full of stereotypes, stock phrases, grimderp for the shoottanmovan god, memes and innuendo that manages to completely miss the point then use neither and do a third one without giving a shit.

the previous two will clear up any gripes you have, loosen up your creative juices and give you two very contrasting point of view on the same action, if it works ever so slightly in both you're a god dam alpha class writer.

in fairness to PF, there have been situations where witches could have died, but through either PF's unwillingness, our batshit insane actions, or some other force, they haven't. also, i think somewhere in the quest it was mentioned that early in the war witches were part of combined units...watching people like Mc who coddled the witches and treated them like daughters/little sisters (especially for the younger ones) would be pretty harrowing...and even though the martians aren't human, in SWQ the witches are still 12-16 year old girls being forced into war to kill other creatures.

    Oh, also Kotters:

How many witch deaths would your subwitch program be allowed to endure before being shut down?

8 deaths in the war, total. Just now, you've killed 3, in one engagement.

Projects like that usually get canned.

2 dead, actually. I mean, one's not doing so great, but...

Technically it was partly due to the Commander's bad judgement, but no one will really know. As far as I can tell, the USN and allies will only be able to tell that the sub went missing, and there may have been reports of martians in the area. I think they'd conclude that a single sub testing equipment wasn't fit to engage and survive, and either stop testing in the open ocean, or only test in heavily fortified areas. As it stands, however, the major reaction to losing so many witches would be to only operate them within larger, more capable groups. That's how I see it, anyway.

    >>19075321
I can't make any promises, but I'll be doing my best. Right now, I don't see how we could get away with any hijinks or waifuing, even if it were possible. The quest will be starting with Kukyendall and Caulders captured for study. It's not exactly Castle Barin, a location that _from the source material_ is conducive to wacky plot.

transubstantiation vs consubstantiation. if i remember correctly, catholic doctrine is that the bread and wine become the body and blood while still retaining their usual taste and texture (trans). that vs consubstantiation (the eucharist merely representing christ's presence) was actually one of the main sticking points in the reformation
    >>19075321
considering that both kotters' and panzer's quests have female MCs, i doubt that'll be too much of an issue. to be honest, i dont mind the waifuing all that much, because even for all its faults it has managed to characterize the witches of the 501st better than the actual show...and MC, schizo as he his, has actually seen some development too

if the threat to the civil population is big enough it'll just get glossed over. there's NO way 8 is the actually number of witch casualties, that's like saying only 600 Jews got to spend a fabulous vacation on the Auschwitz resort and spa under the Nazi regime; a lie everyone repeats to keep from admitting you just sent your bay girl to be raped by tentacle monsters from mars, whit any luck only figuratively.

in their defense, it could've also been that only 8 AIR witches have died thus far, or only 8 have died in combat, or something like that. although i do agree, the total number of witch deaths is probably much higher than 8 due to suicide, their ship or base getting blown up, etc etc

or maybe the subwitches campaign is later in the war, when Martians have stepped up their game.

also they're bound to excel underwater what with being cephalopods and all, remember they keep treating the sky like a particularly runny sea, what with kayak-shaped interceptors with tiny fins instead of wings, using dumb torpedoes instead of bullets, kidnapping sea faring ships to use as transports, making their land transport legged which only makes sense underwater were wheels turn cars into paddle boats and the whole hydrostatic skeleton bit

i don't get the feeling that trolling is 70% of it. yea, he trolls, and perhaps a bit too much, but i think that a lot of what happens is either our own stupid decisions or his punishing us for said stupid decisions. i'd like to think that more people are starting to realize this now vis a vis actions have consequences
    >>19075505
your point about them treating the sky as a sea is actually...pretty valid. as for the anime, yea, there's implied death and occasionally its shown, but putting the witches in a setting against a mostly competent enemy military (that can also be harmed by conventional weaponry) as opposed to "monster of the week and retarded commanders" really brings that stuff to the fore

    >or maybe the subwitches campaign is later in the war, when Martians have stepped up their game.

Technically this is true. I've moved up the sinking of the Tullibee from its actual date, but it's still about July 1st, 1943. SWQ is currently at early March 1943, IIRC. I've been trying to get Planefag to think of any major offensives I should be aware of, being further along in the timeline, but I guess we'll just hammer out any differences we find as we get to them.

    >also they're bound to excel underwater what with being cephalopods and all,
Well, you have to remember that Mars has no oceans. There's a big reason why all their "ships" fly; they don't know how to make a surface fleet proper.

Anyway, gonna head to bed. I hope I don't disappoint too badly with the quest, it's been ages since I ran a CYOA.

Dunno if you will see this Kotters but I like what you are doing with the SWQ canon. SWQ is a boatload of fun and I love it for the trolling, the military history and learning shit about planes. But when I read stuff like this, or play games like Men of War set in WW2. There is this little voice in the back of my head that constantly whispers "you think this is a motherfucking GAME?!".

Most people these days don't know SHIT about how much death and suffering goes on in war. Burying your friends in a sandbag because that's all that's left of them. Watching people freeze to death and then looting their clothing just so you can stay alive. Pulling people with oil-drenched third degree burns out of the Atlantic after their ship got torpedoed. Or leaving them behind to drown because the other ships in the convoy can't stop lest they get torpedoed as well. Its enough to give you nightmares, and I've barely scratched the surface. Canada contributed over one TENTH of its population to the Commonwealth armed forces in WW2. To say nothing of WW1. That's a lot of war stories.

Cool and edgy? Trust me when I say that reality is a lot more grimdark than fiction. Can you imagine dealing with stuff I described earlier on a weekly basis? Daily basis? For YEARS? And surviving without a scratch while everyone else dies horribly around you? The next time you meet a veteran, shake his damn hand. Because he put up with that stuff so that you don't have to.

I'm pretty sure this is what Planefag is trying to demonstrate with the relationships between MC and the witches. There is tons of death and suffering in SWQ. Planefag just doesn't try to rub it in your face too much. All of the witches MC interacts with have varying amounts of industrial grade PTSD. It shows. Not ALL of what goes on in SWQ is done by Planefag just to harvest bitch tears.
