    39 KB Homeless Psych Quest, Part 3 !M.Rwq1Xuk2 05/07/12(Mon)11:22 No.19011377
    > Previous threads here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Homeless%20Quest

You are Dylan, and until two days ago you were just a normal homeless person. Parks, crackheads, petty theft and scavenging, the lot. Anything to survive.

But then one night, while attempting to pick your life up, you felt a change come over you. Now, to be honest, you can't really remember what happened that night anymore - or at least recall some detail that might have brought the change upon you. Nonetheless, here you are. As Lena said, you have been given... the keys.

You can hear people's thoughts, and with some effort you can intrude upon them, implant thought, influence their decisions. And with that, you have... come think of it, you haven't got a cent off that talent, though you have managed to wrangle some new clothes and make some friends.

And now, you're in a bookshop in Mavensgate, talking to a girl in a black flower-print dress reading on art history. How'd you get here? Oh yes, a place to stay. 'My name's Anne, by the way,' she says. Anne. Hmm.

    > Money: I forgot to add the $20 bucks you guys got from work. So your balance is actually $54.50.
    > What do/say?

    People you know so far:

    > Joe: a social worker. Currently laid up in hospital after getting glassed by a vagrant.
    > Kate: Joe's cousin, an investment banker with Boldmann Tacks.
    > Lena: another Psych you met at the Hospital. Now, when you think of her, you envision for some reason a field of dewy grass on a chilly morning.
    > Ashley: a violinist at Carpenters.
    > Tim: an art student at Carpenters.
    > Anne: a student of... something, at Carpenters. You're guessing art history.

'Anne's a nice name. I'm Dylan. Thanks for offering your couch.'

Make small talk. Ask her about Carpenters, and what she does there. Maybe induce her to ask us to dinner?

    > Roll a d100 for the inducement.

'That's a nice thing to say,' Anne says. You talk a bit more, then she gestures up. 'You want to go sit in the cafe, actually?'

You don't mind, and so the two of you go up after she picks up another one or two books. Pretty eclectic titles, which you don't really know about - Renaissance Italy: a Monogram. Translations of Tang-Song era poetry, with Commentary. Things like that.

As it turns out, she's doing literature and art history in Carpenters. 'So... when do you graduate then?'

'Too far off to think about.' She laughs. 'No, the end of this year actually. Then after that, dear god, I don't even know. It's not the sort of degree that lands a job, you know...' she fidgets a little.

As she talks, you nod and listen, and then you ask about the books. She tells you about the beauty of Song era poetry, the sheer emotion held within such restrained metrical constraints.

    'You speak Chinese?'

'A little. I'm learning.' She smiles widely, and then sit back. All this while, you've been probing at her mind - it's... a disorganised mind. Occasionally bright spots, probably memories, drift into your field of vision, and you ignore them, trying to find some leverage. Then you feel a slight buzz, and out of nowhere Anne giggles.

    'Eh?'

'Oh, sorry, I have no idea - I was just thinking about this silly poem that was written...' she giggles again. 'Hmm. So. What sort of classes do you have? Are you free this evening?'

    From last thread :

Go after getting the address from the girl, tell her you'll bring food around 8.

Head for some place with protests. Try to hear them from here.
On your way, try and find some rich person who could give us 50 dollars for some pretext we'll think of later.

    Creepy like a psychology student.

What time of the year are we in, btw ? I seem to remember may, but it's strange to be searching for a flat as a student in may.

You say you do psychology, and she seems a bit surprised. 'Really? That's a bit scary, isn't it?'

'What, are you reconsidering letting me have the floor?'

'Nah, it's fine,' she laughs. You then say you're about to leave - actually come think of it, it's 3 pm now and you have to see Ashley for violin lesson at 5 - and she asks you to look after her stuff while she gets a latte, and then you can go.

Before that you get her address. Sounds pretty posh, really, Vernon Place. Hmm. Just then, her phone buzzes with a message.

You look up; she's still in the queue. Where'd the queue come from? There wasn't anyone in the cafe five minutes ago.

    > What do? It might be a bit too late to go to the protests now, since the city centre is some ways off. There's always tomorrow, though. Them occupiers gonna occupy.

Yeah, it's May. I guess the in setting reason would be transferring flats for some reason or other. Anne does have a room, after all, she's just moving elsewhere.

The terms here aren't American semesters, either, in case anyone's wondering. (I was thinking British terms, then again May isn't very British either. Brain fail.)

Don't answer her phone, we're already scary enough.

Drop the idea of going to the violin lesson too. Our illusion of having nice hands won't impress an unthinking instrument.

I think we should go back to that library, check if there's anything special happening there related to our powers. If not, we should search the net about information that could be related to the psychs, and their organizations.

You won't answer the phone, of course, but you lean over a little a peek at it. To your surprise you recognise the number.

Wait a bloody minute, isn't that Lena? How'd she... you then look up and see her turn around with her latte, and then come over. She puts on her red coat and the two of you walk down the stairs while she checks her phone.

'Huh. Listen to this. 'I'll bring someone round from Spring to talk to you, so hang in there. How hot do you want the rep to be?'' Anne laughs at this. 'The hell is this? You didn't use my phone did you?'

    'Eh? Dude, I wouldn't!'

'Nah, just kidding, loosen up! Too much psych makes you tense, man.' You try to think through her thoughts, but they really are rather woolly. You feel like trekking through clouds.

You repeat your promise to bring food round at 8, and she nods. She says she wants pizza. Well, that can be arranged. Now you're alone again, wondering about the message. Oh, also, about the money matters... and Ashley's violin lesson is in an hour and a half.

You are going to try begging in a nice t-shirt and jeans? You don't look like a homeless person anymore, so much as a rather poorly dressed hipster.

You do send out your mental feelers, though, and find an old man who is sitting on the outside of a cafe. As you make eye contact with him, he seems to shudder, and then he frowns at you.

'What the hell are you looking at?'

Before you can reply, he gets up, slams several bills on the table and walks out. You look around, then move in and help yourself to a fiver.

A modern student pub, that's what it bloody is... you do sound really old for your actual age. > 81 vs. 28 + 10: success!

As you move up to the two professors, you can feel their thoughts - and a certain, sharp, will behind them - emanate towards you. Your mind eagerly takes it, even though you aren't really sure what they're talking about. Dialectic of historical processes? Transmutation of the zeitgeist via gehirnsverwandlung? That's not even English, is it?

You then sit down and listen to them talk, and due to your influence they hardly notice you. One of them glances at you eventually. 'Oh, oh, you're Alan from the German history class! Hey, good to see you. You want anything to eat? Pick from the menu.'

You look; the cheaper options are like $3.50, but there's a deluxe super burger for $7. There's beers from $1.50 to $3 as well, so

    > how dickish do you feel?
    > Also, are there any things you'd like to know about your powers? You figure it's best to put down a list, so you can ask someone.

You're not that hungry, but then you're still quite used to eat whenever you can.

You order something cheap and a nice beer, and then sit there listening to the conversation. All this while you've been hungrily taking in their thoughts, but after a while that seems to have an effect; the talk dies down, the two professors stumble on their words as if drunk, then eventually they sigh and sit back.

Then they start bitching about admin, and that does not quite feel as good as when they were debating. It's a little disappointing, really.

You manage to finish your meal without further disturbance, and thank the two before getting up. 'Yeah, I'll see you tomorrow Alan. Or are you Bryan, actually?'

    'Alan, sir.'

'Sir!' He chuckles. 'Redgrave will do. Nice having you round to listen to us bitching, eh?'

And with that you head out into the crisp summer afternoon. Soon you're on your way to Ashley's place. Should you buy a gift, or do something? You're not so sure about handling a violin anymore - though it'd be an interesting test of whether your confidence allows you to play it. You stop by the nearby shop and get a bottle of wine for $5, and a box of Krackly Kresps doughnuts for $5 as well. Things are steep these days.

    > Money: $49.50

As the shopkeeper scans your stuff, you notice with a slight start that he's in the middle of a nasty divorce. That just came through. You didn't really want to know.

The music is audible even before you go to the building; it's a nice, old-style house that's been divided into student apartments, and there's music coming from all of them. Saxophone from the ground floor, violin and piano from upstairs. Then drums from the basement. Basement's always for drums, eh.

    > 79: success

You... actually do remember a tune by that name. You wonder where your fingers would need to be. You probably could do it. Yes, you probably could do it...

You press the doorbell, and after a moment a voice that isn't Ashley's comes on. 'Yes? Who's this?'

    'I'm looking for Ashley.'

Then the door opens and soon you're in the flat. Ashley opens the door, looks you over, and then her eyes light up in memory. 'Oh yes! Dylan! Dylan Prettyhands!' She grabs your hands. 'Come in, come in! You got doughnuts! And wine! Awesome!'

There's a bearded guy playing the piano inside, as well as another blonde girl, tall and quite tanned, standing with a huge violin. Oh, no, that's a double bass.

'He's Dylan, he says he wants to learn to play the violin. That's it, right, Dylan?' Ashley's enthusiasm seems a bit too direct. Maybe you pushed the thought in her brain too hard.

We went too far because something exactly like

    >>19012424

Happened. You are using your powers to have attractive hands, of all things, so it worked brilliantly.

It would appear the dice gods intend for love to blossom on the G string.

Anyway, you see the violin, and then as you touch it - very carefully, you don't know when you might break something - Ashley comes out with four glasses half filled with wine. Wine, inappropriate for students at 5 pm? Never!

As the others continue practicing, Ashley raises the violin to your neck before swigging the whole of her glass of wine. You can sense something in her mind clicking already; it's rather easy to gain entry now. The blonde girl and the bearded guy, not so much...

You spend about half an hour figuring out fingering, positions, scraping, plucking, and other important movements on the strings and neck of the violin. Then, with a strange and powerful sense of total confidence, you put the bow on.

    > How far do you intend to take this? You have a 100 roll behind you. Your mind has just taken in the musical atmosphere here, quite literally; the music has stopped downstairs and next door.

You launch into the Sarabande of Bach's Partita no. 2, and it takes just a few measures before the three of them are staring at you. You don't really remember what goes on in the meantime. You are just playing; your hands are moving, driven by thoughts that are not yours. In all honesty, it is a little terrifying, as if you have suddenly lost control and are just watching yourself move.

You hear sniffling as if in the distance, and when you finally finish, you look up. The bearded guy has gone off into the kitchen, and the blonde girl has disappeared too. There's only Ashley left, and she's sitting with her legs folded on the couch, crying into her hands. You put a hand on her shoulder and she shakes it off.

'I don't... even know... you just lied... what the fuck was that for...'

You have no idea what she's talking about, really...

    Right, a few things:

Firstly, didn't see the surge of votes against going all the way while writing. Apologies.

Secondly, you didn't actually go *all* the way, or you wouldn't still be feeling the urge to play. One Sarabande wouldn't be the end of it, you feel hyped enough to play the entire Partita.

Thirdly, yes, draining is when you tear too hard into a person's capacity for thought and drive them insane. It can lead to catatonia, permanent vegetative states, or horrific suicides.

You take a deep breath and remove the violin from your hands; you thought you just put it down, but it turns out you actually threw it onto the table with a clatter. If you hadn't done that you would probably have just kept on playing. There is now a sort of whining sound in your ears, as if several violins were being tuned, very loudly. Shit shit shit shit shit...

Then the episode passes, and you get up to look for the other two in case they cut themselves, but just then the bearded guy comes out and so does the blonde girl. 'The fuck are you doing, Anneka?'

'What do you mean? I'm off to do some solo practice.' She's got her double bass in the case now. 'I mean, I don't see any willingness on your part to play.'

'I was going to fucking play! I just...' the man trails off, runs a finger through his hair. 'I just... it's a long day, I've got a fucking pile of theory to do, and then Ashley-'

'Ashley? Ashley what? I what?' Ashley's wiped her tears and springs to her feet. 'Look, Brian, don't take your own blocked up shit out on me!'

'Blocked up shit? Coming from you! You haven't touched that violin longer than you haven't touched your cunt!'

'Right, that's it.' Anneka storms out of the hall. No one appears even to have noticed you, until Ashley turns to see you. Her eyes widen a little.

'Oh... oh, Dylan? I... dear god, what the hell just happened, I'm sorry!'

    Okay, a bit of clarification:

You got into a sort of trance state there, which is dangerous. Your mind can get addicted to certain sorts of energy - passion, enthusiasm, these things are always attractive - and go on draining if you don't watch it.

Fortunately you stopped yourself in time, and fortunately humans are a resilient bunch. They will recover from an episode like this. You've done the equivalent of given them a bad bruise, but it'll take a lot of bad bruises to cross the line of no recovery.

Still, brains are one thing and relationships are another. So do watch it.

And at that moment, the pain ceases, so abruptly you lean back against the wall. You then see Jeffrey's head poke in, brown hair with the sides shaved, wearing a green suit - the height of hipsterism. 'Hello Ashley darling. Everyone in?'

'Oh, um... hey there Jeff. Yeah it's...' then Jeffrey turns, sees you, and frowns. You feel the jabbing in your ears, behind your eyes, again, and then it eases.

An active drain is what just happened - you focus on someone and attempt to use their willpower to do something in the physical world. Imagine running on someone else's energy, snatching their thoughts.

So, go to Anne? And then contact/don't contact Lena? You wipe yourself as cleanly as you can, then go to the local pizza joint. You're right you haven't got much money left; so you just get a margarita pizza, which is $6.

    > Money: $43.50

After that, you then go out, holding the pizza. It's actually still really sunny, and a bit early for meeting Anne, but you don't want to faff around outdoors in Mavensgate anymore, so you make your way...

... and then you see the big score. He's got several bills held to his chest, as well as a packet of green pills in his hand. You can tell he's quite out of it, really, which is why he is so unresisting about divulging his big score.

'Dude, dude, hug the lady tight! Aww yeah, she likes a proper hug!' You whisper into his mind, and he grunts and pulls everything safely into his overcoat. You stay strong, brother.

You finally make it to Anne's flat, and press the doorbell before going up the stairs. The door is open, and Anne is there - in a tank top and hot pants. 'Hello, Dylan, is that din- what's wrong with your nose, Dylan?'

'Eh?' You wipe at it. Oh damn, missed the nosebleed. 'Oh, nothing. Fell on my face just now...'

'Goodness, be careful!' She takes the pizza from your hands. 'Come on in then.' You take a look in; it's a pretty cramped studio flat, just a glorified room really. There is no bed, just a mattress on the floor.

'Oh, um... yeah it's nothing. Tripped. On steps.'

    'In the campus?'

    'Yeah, campus.'

'Man, that's shit. The campus is shit. They said they'd renovate it when I joined, then now I'm in my final year, nothing!' She rants on about the campus you've never seen before while you agree with her scathing assessments.

At length you finish the pizza, and then you ask to borrow her cellphone. 'Oh yeah, sure, it's on the kitchen counter.' You take her plate to the sink and take the phone. Lena's message is still there...

'Hmm? Computer's over there.' Well, you saw it. She turns off the TV, then gets up to do the dishes as you surf the net.

You... blimey, you can't find anything about the Psychs. When you search for Psychs, wildlings and Bestowers, you get a few weird organisation websites, but none of them are about the things you've heard so far. More like, occult stuff.

Or maybe they're relevant and you just don't know what they're on about. You try looking for more things... maybe games? You find a game called Verlaufen, a role-playing game that's long since out of print. 1982, man. An expansion pack called Unerwünscht also went out of print 2 years after that. No materials...

You jump when a hand lands on your shoulder. 'Not using my comp for porn, are you? What's this?'

    'It's just... work.'

'Work, eh.' The hand remains on your shoulder as she looks. 'You've got some weird shit psychology stuff, I'll tell you that. So what do you do on your evenings?'

She sits on the edge of her bed, propping her head on her hands and then her knees. You look back at the computer. Hmm.

    > What do/say?

Anne grins mischievously as you say it, and when you turn to her she's lying back in the bed already, propping up her head with her arms. How's she this pale in summer? 'Hmm. Good enough for a second look?'

Just as you're about to get started, her cellphone starts ringing. 'Ah, shit,' she mutters, naked under you. 'Ignore it?'

    'Yeah, they'll fuck off.'

At the end of the sex, you fall into a deep, long sleep; and if there were any dreams you cannot remember them. When you sense that it's next morning you half hope your face to be buried in Anne's breasts or something, but Anne's gone. Instead you hear voices in the kitchen.

    'You promised what?'

'Not to feed! Well, not to actively feed! Look, he was trying to boil my brains out of my ears, all right?'

    'In the city?'

    'No, no, just Mavensgate!'

Dawn nods. 'See, I told you Jeff is a reasonable bloke.'

'Granted, it could be way fucking worse,' Lena sits on the Orkøn chair, crosses her legs. You'd pay good money to- okay you better stop thinking such things. 'Well. Looks like you got off easy this time. I'm sorry, myself, all right... I should've explained this stuff to you, but I got hungry and went to have a burrito. Man, you're good at fucking off though! Couldn't find you the entire day. Had to rely on the guys from Summer to trace a phone next to yours and send you that message. But it ended in a good knobbing so no complaints, eh.'

'Don't mind Lena, she's had too much coffee. You asked about the Congregations. We are the Free Community of Psychs, and we welcome people who seem to have become Psychs without Bestowers. This is a relatively recent phenomenon, around a century old, so we're a young organisation.

'In terms of the Congregations, we have four of them. Spring does the support work, making friends. Summer is involved deeply in the society of normal people. Autumn are the police and the boring civil servants, and Winter are the fighters. Each court then has six offices, one for each solar term.'

'Your little new lay would now,' Lena says, looking at the pile of books.

Dawn continues. 'Now. Psychs like us, and Psychs like Jeff, are different. Jeff has got a Bestower and he knows it, and so he's been part of the Bestower's province, he's got his territory. A lot of the city is carved into territories, but there's 12 million people so there's plenty to go around. What you basically did, whatever it was, was you fed off someone on Jeff's ground. Naturally, he's angry.'

    'Naturally he's a dick, too.'

'I'll just get the Rainwater Office to talk to him. Kiss and make up. Jeff's a nice bloke! Really he is...'

    Righto then, Offices time.

Also, catalog.neet.tv/tg is your friend; this thread should be hitting limit soon.

The Spring Congregation is concerned with nurturing the power of the Psychs, as well as in nurturing the community of Psychs within a city. They are teachers, conflict resolvers, and diplomats - even talking to the Bestowers, who all too often are the foes of the community.

Spring Begins - the induction office of the Congregation.

Rainwater - the Rainwater office provides logistics support, and serves as a liaison between the community and other entities - Bestowers, other cities’ communities, and even Creations in some cases.

Roused Insects - the Roused Insects office is dedicated to nurturing and monitoring potentially manifesting Psychs, and to studying the phenomena of incipient manifestations.

Vernal Equinox - the leaders of the Spring Congregation, known as being teachers and nurturers.

Bright Clarity - people of the Bright Clarity office dedicates itself to keeping track of new abilities, as well as keeping track of their possible consequences - especially Creations.

Grain Shower - the people of the Grain Shower are often instructors, and also help in creating safe locations and houses within the city to support the community.

    Summer

The Summer Congregation believes that thought is nothing without action. They are people of action - actively trying to extend the influence of the Psychs in the affairs of the world. They often disavow the actions of some of their more creative kin, or even consider them threats to the greater world in which Summer is the most deeply involved.

Summer Begins - the induction office of the Congregation.

Abundance - they are the treasurers, economists, and often the monitors of economic trends, preoccupied with securing the real-world prosperity of Psychs.

Awns - the Awns are often the planners of Summer operations, whether of a social, political, or economic nature. They, and the Abundance, are the most involved in the affairs of normal people.

Summer Solstice - the leaders of the Summer Congregation, famed for their drive, enthusiasm and organisation.

Minor Heat - the Minor Heat are the people who keep track of real world threats and enemies to their cities and homes.

Major Heat - the Major Heat is the combat arm of Summer, devoted to attacking its foes in the real world. This mostly includes normal humans, though it can also include Creations.

Participation in the Community is not obligatory. It has a lot of perks, though. And joining it doesn't mean you can't change the world. A quarter of the Community tries to do that actively.

As for the Conservationists, it's what the Autumn sometimes call themselves. They're the rulekeepers, after all.

    Autumn

The Autumn Congregation is about order, foresight, the careful preparations for dangerous times ahead. They are the enforcers of rules, the keepers of records, and the people who give a firm backbone to the community at large - administrators, bookkeepers, police.

Autumn Begins - the induction office of the Congregation.

Limit of Heat - these are the administrative and regulative arm of the Community; their focus is mostly to avoid drawing attention to Psychs, by reining in their fellows.

White Dew - the White Dew office keeps records for the community at large, allowing them to monitor Psychs, and potential episodes of dangerous Creation, mass manifestations, or the undue interventions of Bestowers.

Autumnal Equinox - the leaders of the Autumn Congregation, known as legislators, enforcers, and disciplinarians.

Cold Dew - the Cold Dew office keeps careful track of other Psychs within the city, and their masters; they are the spies to the diplomats of Rainwater.

Frost Descends - the combat arm of Autumn, and the police of the community as a whole.

    Winter

The Winter Congregation is about protection and defence - making use of harsh measures to guard the seeds of a new year. They are the defenders, the militants, the wall around the community.

Winter Begins - the training arm of the Congregation.

Snowfall - this company is the reconnaissance arm of Winter, keeping a broad outlook to defend the community against other cities and communities.

Blizzard - this company is the arm that fights non-community Psychs and their Bestowers or masters.

Winter Solstice - the commanders of Winter, they are fierce, dedicated and often combatant.

Little Cold - the anti-Creation combat arm of the community, they deal with the frequent consequences of the Psychs’ creative powers.

Great Cold - the heavy combat arm of Winter, mobilised for large-scale threats - be it from other communities, non-community Psychs, Bestowers, or even major human enemies.

'Ah. Creations.' Lena lets Dawn explain. 'You kind of figure what we do. We live off the will of others to act, think, and live. And sometimes our actions and the influence they have on normal people allow the normals to come up with great things.

'The ideal state for us Psychs is not to drift around consuming random bits of thought that have no coherence. It is to grow a deep circle of normal human friends, lovers, acquaintances. The more we know about someone, the more satisfying it is to feed off them. And the reverse is also true.'

'Zelda and Scott Fitzgerald. Zelda's the Psych, in case you were wondering.' Lena stands up, makes herself another coffee. What, four now? 'But not everyone is fucking Scott Fitzgerald, and most other normal people come up with nothing but nightmares. They believe in them, it gets perpetuated, and they can gain actual form.'

    'Like vampires. The blood ones.'

'The next time I see another vampire that glitters in the sun, I will... never mind.'

I for one don't think the time to decide is now.

I really want to know more about the history and politics of the psychs.
Is it a world wide organization ? Does it have long-term goals ? What are the others psy organizations, be them rivals or concerned with other things ? What's the deal with jeffrey and his bestower ?

    > I see the consensus is join, but with plenty of reservations. So a post to try and address some things.

'Look. If I join the community, I'm not stuck in there forever, am I? If I really can't stand you guys - no offence - but if I really can't - then I bugger off. Yes?'

'Yes.' Dawn nods firmly. 'We believe in three principles. Duty, not Power; Responsibility, not Entitlement; Consent, not Fealty. So your question lies under the third bit. You must confirm that you understand these three principles, but that is not a promise, not the sort you made to Jeff.'

As for Morus, Lena explains that it's named after the mulberry tree, which is planted to feed silkworms. And silkworms can easily strip an entire tree bare. So Morus refers to the ugliest, most voracious of hungers.

Basically, Morus is the culmination of some particularly brutal conflicts, when the victor has the capacity to completely destroy the loser. A large part of the loser's power is taken in by the victor, but the victor also pays a price, in that he will have to accommodate the loser's voice in his head. 'Needless to say, once you commit Morus enough times, your head becomes the UN conference hall. Bloated, and thoroughly ineffective.'

    > Decision: join!

You repeat after them the Acknowledgement of the Three Principles; after that little run in with Jeffrey you're very careful to repeat the lines only after you make sure they haven't got undertakings in them.

'I do understand the Three Principles... I do my duty, and seek not power... we legislate by consent, and not by fealty... ' it goes on for a bit more. But once you say that, this time you don't feel any headaches, and Dawn simply comes up to hug you. 'Welcome! It's rare we get two manifesting on a single night, you know. It's a pity we've lost the other one, but you'll do good, won't you?'

'I'm not promising anything like that,' you mutter.

Lena, meanwhile, is going off to the Hospital to fetch Anne. 'Want to make sure she doesn't know what's going on. You have good taste in girls, Dylan. But until you can keep your brain in your skull, please keep your bits in your jeans, eh? Toodles.'

Dawn is going to Saffernsway, meanwhile.

'So, Dawn... is this going to the new place?'

'Ayup.' She walks off, but not before clearing everything up properly in the flat. You can totally see why she's in Spring.

The drive to Saffernsway takes about 30 minutes; Saffernsway is much nearer the city centre, resting along the south of the Herring Lake which then runs into the City River. Naturally, it's a nice and relatively idyllic place. Ironically, it's kind of like the park where you slept in the past. So things have gone full circle rather quickly.

Dawn is surprisingly quiet while driving, and her taste in music is mostly old school rock. Nothing much to complain about there. 'Aaaand we're here!' She finally announces.

    > Roll 3d100 for your digs.
    > Also, once you've settled into your digs, I must admit I need to draw up a rough character focus guide first. So the actual training bit will have to be deferred to next session. If Dawn's being honest, there's no shortage of Lenas in the Community. 'Don't you just love her legs? Such lovely legs! Miniskirts work like magic on her. I can't do miniskirts. To be honest, you are... rather lost, really. This place quite overwhelms you. The cleanliness, the size... even when you did have a home, it had been in a council estate, damp, dingy and smelling of weed and rubbish all the time.

As you move to the windows, seeing the grebes, ducks and swans along the waters of the lake, you feel tears roll down your eyes. You need to remember this moment, you tell yourself. You're not human anymore, Dylan. But this time round you cried like one because you were happy. Remember this. Don't forget it. Fire, and a new house.

Dawn comes up and gently touches your back. You turn around and cry into her shoulder.

It's a long time before you finally recover, and the two of you settle on the couch. 'Come think of it, Dawn...'

    'Yes?'

'It's safe to have sex with another psych, right?'

'You could blow each others' brains out,' she nods. 'It's happened before.'

'What, sexual Morus?' that sounds even more disturbing than, well, normal Morus. Dawn shakes her head.

Also, in terms of managing your powers, Dawn suggests some exercises. One is to sit in a crowded place, listen to the hubbub of thoughts, then just... play sorting exercises.

Differentiate men from women. Young from old, Asian from white from black, and so on. Then practice blocking one group out. Listen only to women, only to black guys, only to old white blokes. And then, finally, start picking them out to be blocked one by one.

'It takes some time to get into the hang of it, but it's basic stuff. Once you get used to this, your brain will stay mainly in your skull. Then you just have to be careful. Which of course is difficult when you're fucking, I guess...'

She also suggests trying to simply exercise your agility. Switch from listening to one set of thoughts to another, quickly. Then block them all out at once. Then let just two in, and things like that. Traditional meditation also helps, of course...

As for Dawn becoming your roommate, she laughs. 'I've got my own digs, sorry! And Franc wouldn't be too happy if I moved in with another cute guy.' Well, that kind of nips it, eh? Do you like blue hair and earloops, really?

Lake view it is! You plonk down on the bed, and feel a bit guilty for mussing up the sheets. There's a desktop here, and a set of weights for physical training. Also a card which says that the cleaning maid comes round on Fridays. Dear god.

Oh yes, you did ask Dawn about how much of Lena is real. She chuckled and said, 'I can assure you that the important bits are real. The legs are real, for sure.'

As for the history, you find a sort of primer in the hall bookshelf. To summarise - Bestowers have been around since time immemorial, and have long held monopoly over the powers of Psychs. But in times of immense death and stress, it is said that 'Fatherless' Psychs tend to turn up quite frequently as well.

One such time was during the Black Death; another time, which has stretched on curiously until now, was after the slaughter of the two World Wars. As such, Psychs like you are a relatively new phenomenon, and the Free Community a relatively new organisation. Hmm.

Also, maybe find a job in the mall. Does the congregation give any work, actually, like missions?

    Why the mall?
We could get a pretty comfortable and good paying job if we look around a bit.

I second the training notion. Grab a newspaper and sit on a bench.

The closet has got two suits, several shirts and t-shirts, pants, pyjamas, trousers, jeans. Seriously. Even a pile of boxers.

As for the fridge, the freezer has got some food, but the fridge is empty. Probably don't want it to go bad, eh...

Eventually, after more walking around and marvelling at the place, you decide to go down to the shopping mall. East Herring Dock Shopping Centre is a huge complex, with a large Resno 24-Hour hypermart. You think you could probably get away with sitting somewhere there, or somewhere outside in the main mall, and listen to the crowds.

In fact, the voices are already coming at you, though your efforts to block them seem to you quite ineffectual. You block some, but only for a while; once the speakers move they leak back again. Damnit.

    Spend all afternoon.
Follow the advise that Dawn gave us.

Grab a newspaper and sit down on a bench, pretend reading it so that it is not that obvious that you're just sitting there doing nothing.
Move from place to place after 30 minutes.

Start with focusing on kids. They probably have less complex thoughts

Try to focus on specific areas. We are at a mall. Each store has a different demography. Lets see if we can guess what kind of store it is from the thoughts in each area.

Look around for a Yoga club or something like that. The training will do well to our body and mind, we need to learn to clean our mind and focus, plus, girls on yoga pants. Its a win-win scenario.

    > Taking just one set of rolls, but given your tips the bonuses stack up!

You first decide to get yourself a nice drink, so you settle for some iced tea before sitting down, facing one of the large skylights. You do find children easy to think through and filter; you pick up their voices, many of which are still unformed, and block them out.

Then you gradually go on to more challenges. You move from one bit of the mall to another, then try to figure out the shops around you. As the afternoon wears on, you easily sense the influx of kids from the high schools; looking around you realise that one of the schools is co-ed, and the other appears to be a girls' school. No wonder Lena was being so snarky.

For now, though, their voices make for great filtering practice, if only because the are SO DAMNED LOUD. You try to single out cliques, single out shops frequented by them, then filter them out. Before listening in again. Hmmmm.

You should be tired by this, but the constant stream of sustenance makes you energetic instead.

    > 94 + 15, 74 + 15 = 2 double rolls, 4 experience points!
    > You have Self Control 2, with 3 more points to 3.

You realise the sunlight is slanting in via the windows now. It's getting into evening, and the teenagers are scattering, as are most of the younger ones. Only Resno is still very busy.

I'm against finding a regular job. We've got the means to do whatever we please. That's the reason we left our home, no reason to find a nine to five job now that things are getting good.

Maybe we should start playing poker. Scamming people is not so bad if they want to be scammed.

Most importantly, what's our legal status ? We're still seventeen, does the state expect us to go back to our parents if he gets info on us ? Do we have our papers somewhere ? Could we go pass high-school final exams and get into university ?

Haven't been participating, but I just finished reading this jazz and I really like what you've done here. It's like V:tM meets Psychic hobo, with some other stuff thrown in, and I'm getting a sort of changeling vibe from it too.

The Community as a faction idea is really good as well. Do you have any of the other factions fleshed out? Because I could totally see a system designed around this. Kudos to you sir.

You can do the mapping thing the next day, it sounds pretty cool.

The library at home - how fast you call it home! - has got a little book on meditation, though it's more zazen than yoga. Well, reckon this'll have to do for now. You sit, quietly, and soon you realise you can hear the thoughts of almost everyone in this building. The squabbling couple just downstairs; below them the father and daughter; then to their left, a maid. And further down from that...

You sit there for several hours, letting their voices drift in and out before shutting them out completely, until finally you get too physically hungry. Oh well, had to start somewhere.

    > Are you guys just rushing to keep your brains in your skulls so you can whip out your bits post-haste?
    > 84 + 5 = 1 point! 2 points left to Mental Control 3.

Oh, also, you just got a mobile phone in the mail. It's charging now. You do wonder about your legal status. If you do pass an exam, university would not be a problem; you can register to take the national exams as a private candidate. Or you could go to school.

    ... maybe not.

As for your parents, well, you're not sure if three years is long enough for things to lapse. You're pretty sure neither of them give a flying toss, though. They didn't when you were around, so why would they when you aren't?

I've been spending most of my effort on the Community so far, since it's the one Dylan was most likely to join. (This isn't really a spoiler I guess) the Bestowers are rather more feudal than modern in their organisation - why change what's worked for centuries and centuries?

I do need to flesh out exactly what it is the Psychs can do, though. Actually, it'd be great to get contributions from the players, so do give ideas please. I can trust you guys.

    > Okay, last post for today. Blimey, this has been a good session.

You stretch, make yourself a simple sandwich, and eat it while sitting in the chair. Wait a minute, this is also a Makea Orkøn ergonomic etc. etc.! Bloody things are everywhere.

Also, you set your mind on learning how to cook properly one day. Given your fear of fire, it'll be a long shot. But the oven doesn't have fire! So maybe you can bake or something. That's cool too.

You can't help but tear up thinking how your life has suddenly drifted so far off. What on earth just happened? Suddenly... you are like a king in a penthouse. Wiping your eyes, you cast your mind upon the darkness below, punctuated by rows of streetlamps until the water's edge, when there is an enormous, yawning gap. It's oddly, frighteningly, beautiful.

The evening here is actually quite busy, in terms of thoughts. It seems a lot of university students live here, as do many high school students - the schools must have a boarding faculty of some sort. Well. This is the first time you're in urban society in a proper position.

Just before you go to sleep, the mobile beeps. It's a text; you check it and it's from Lena. 'Sleep tight. Sleep alone these few nights. Stay safe.'

    You too, sister, you too...

    > Okay! I'm off to bed myself. Any criticisms, suggestions for character building next thread, are welcome.

I know it's selfish but personally I'd rather there wasn't a huge community effort where we help make crunch and we hammer the background out into something concrete because to me part of what has mad this thread so injoyable is how we know little more than the character himself (insofar as you can with metagaming and genre savvyness on tg). I quite like that we are only finding out what Dylan finds out when he does.
either way this has been really enjoyable so far, thanks for putting so much effort into it and being a great GM

i dont think telekinesis is that fitting in our setting.
how about being able to influence animals thoughts to some degree?
basic things like trying to make them like you / afraid / angry at one person.
dont want to go killing birds at random though... their minds are pretty nonexistant already, even without as drawing from them.

Also, how about reverse-drawing? Basically mental healing.

you also mentioned some people being able to "posess" others completely and take over their bodies.

Well perhaps it is something to think about later.

When the quest has proceeded to the point where most of the background has been revealed and explained, somebody can start creating the crunch for it.

I am impressed as hell that you're keeping two very good quest threads running at the same time.

For specializing you could have people focus more on different ranges of the emotional spectrum, creativity, rage, will to live, love, despair and so on. Specializing in non humans, wolves, dogs, swarms of insects that sort of thing. The subtle people who influence you without you even knowing it and the blunt force sledge hammers who just relentless batter down any mental defenses you have. People who use the standard defense of pulling up your fears to worm their way in.
