The archers are firing wave after wave of arrows, mowing down the enemy but the endless hordes keep on coming.

They bounce harmlessly off the things' armor.
You switch to tridents.

They're slower, since you can only throw one at a time, but the heavier weapons allow you to impale the enemy.

Hundreds fall to arrows, thousands more take their place.
To your right, a hammer is hooked onto the top of the wall, orcs quickly ascending it.

We're already ridiculously well trained in melee combat, and have armor that should leave us near invulnerable to normal attacks, we didn't need the flashy stuff to have changed the course of events.

What we would need to change events however, is not following the script of the books exactly.
