Kate is sleeping, in front of you, still wearing her white blouse. She seems to be muttering something in her sleep. You look around you.

This flat is seriously a nice place - yellow brick, but with tastefully subtle decor and large lovely windows. Sunlight is streaming through, and the place feels nice and warm. Man, you could live here. Except of course you couldn't, not in a lifetime.

You clean up the plates of eaten sandwiches and then put them in the dishwasher, a stainless steel and white enamel affair. And then you wonder about the thought you've been hearing. You think about hearing them, but you don't feel any buzz, only sensing that there are thoughts emanating. From next door... and from the opposite flat. Soft thoughts.

This thought-sensing thing is still a bit weird to you. It feels a bit like voices, but also a bit like shimmers on the edge of your vision - you can't tell which sense it is that's picking them up. Well, you'll get used to it somehow you reckon.

You place your hand against her forehead, then her neck. Nope, she seems normal.

The news doesn't seem so normal, though. You haven't watched the news for a long time, and living in the suburbs for years in a massive city means you're a bit cut off. You watch the crowds of protestors against the new Social Entity Empowerment Act, whatever that means; hear the reports that the protests have gone on for weeks over all sorts of things.

Meanwhile in the north of the city, riots; and just down the road from you, a sixth body has been found near 14 Stanson Way. The police warn that there might be a spree killer on the loose.

You go out and look for... Jacob? No, Joe, that's the name. But he doesn't seem to be around. Must have gone off to his job downstairs already.

So instead you go back into Kate's room, and sit down. You're not sure if you should do this, but why not try? You push your thoughts at her, and indeed it appears that her being asleep makes her far more vulnerable. Certainly you don't feel the resistance you did last night at first, when you tried to make her do the victory dance.

After a few minutes, though, with no response from her, you then hear the phone ring in the hall. Hmm.

'Oh. Oh. You still here, huh.' She rubs her eyes. 'Nice of you to stay.'

You don't say anything and watch as she stumbles out and takes the phone. At first her demeanour seems quite calm, but then she goes 'Wait, what?' You watch her, with her hand over her mouth, for the rest of the conversation. Then she puts down the phone.

'Ah, Jesus fucking Christ. Joe's gotten injured, some fucking junkie in the shelter...' She runs a hand through her hair. 'Look, Dylan right? Could you go down and take a look at him? I mean, just say you're his cousin's friend. I really need to go back to the bank now.'

Yeah, you probably should get interested in being in the loop again.

You head off to change into some of Joe's clothes as Kate handles herself, and then leave. Kate calls after you. 'He's at the Mavengate Hospital!'

You figure how to go there by bus, and then sit there, looking around. You haven't seen the inside of a bus for a bit. But now, in your clean clothes, you're normal, no one pays you any heed. You could get used to this.

You look around you; there's two old couples behind you, and another old man sits a few rows ahead. But beside you there are three seats of giggling teenage boys and girls. Isn't there school or something?

On the stop just before the hospital, a young woman gets on, wearing denim shorts and a short yellow coat. Despite all the empty seats around, she comes up and sits beside you.

You blink, and then notice that every now and then she's glancing at you. When you glance back, she looks away, but she has a smile. She's really quite pretty, with black hair streaked red, and a small tattoo of stag's antlers on her wrist.

You try to think of her thoughts, but suddenly you feel as if someone's just poured cold water into your ears. In the fit of dizziness, you feel the bus stop, and she stands up to get off, with you following.

You get off the bus, stumbling slightly, and see that she's also headed for the hospital - a large, blue cube of a building. Man, you don't like hospitals. Haven't been in one for some time, though.

You go up to her, and see that on the outside of the same arm with the antler tattoo is a little slogan, 'Ours is the Fury'. Huh. Nice line actually.

    'Hey.'

She glances at you. 'Hmm what?'

'You...' you feel the sense of cold water in your ears as well, as well as a tingling in your fingers, but you focus and manage to push those sensations aside. 'You're... who're you?'

'Man, don't guys know subtlety or a pick-up line these days?' She says it in a good natured way, though. Her t-shirt is also yellow, with a black miniskirt. 'My name's Lena. And I'm going to see my dying grandma.'

'Well... someone just came in with a broken bottle and a baseball bat and started swinging. Screamed about something like being watched, the great drake is upon him, and the like. He was going to hit one of the other homeless people so I tried to stop him and got this...'

You think about her going to the park, laughing at the squirrels... but you don't feel the buzz that signals you're getting to her. Instead you watch, with slight horror, as she takes another puff, then stubs the cigarette out on her left wrist.

She then pulls her miniskirt up a little, and you can see that she's wearing black panties under there. Man, it'd be nice to ask to see more. Maybe even touch...

You snap back, stumble a bit, then fall on your arse on the cafeteria. She stands up and comes over to you. 'You all right?' Your head hurts a bit now, and then you notice she hasn't got a burn mark on her arm.

'Um... I'm okay. Well, um, how about... we go... to the-'

'The park is a good idea. It's sunny out.' She gives you a slightly mischievous look then pulls you to your feet. 'Come on, then.'

You walk down the road with her, and she's actually quite chatty. It's a pretty quiet road, so you don't know what there is to talk about. But she has a way of making things look interesting.

    'What's that about the riots?'

'Oh, riots, strikes... fun times. Austerity! Nothing left in the pot, guys, look away, look away.' She looks at you. You notice she hasn't got her tattoo anymore. 'No, no. Sorry. Probably thinking of something else.'

Soon you're at Mavensgate Park. Children are frolicking around, old men walk big sluggish dogs, small yapper type dogs don't shut the fuck up, and there's a large pond in the middle. 'Playground, pond, rose gardens, big field for lying down, and... more fields and trees. Oh, cafe's over there too, with a loo.'

The pond is indeed lovely! There's geese and ducks and grebes, and even two swans hovering round each other. 'Those're lovers,' Lena says. 'You know swans can often be gay? Like, two male swans?'

You do manage to keep yourself from blurting out about the note, and the time when you first began to suspect your abilities, however. You do that by counting, and surprisingly it seems to work. HUNDRED FORTY THREE! HUNDRED FORTY FOUR!

Lena laughs. 'Try counting more complex series, Dylan. It works better. Better still, just imagine a pack of hounds!' The two terriers chasing each other along the pond's edge suddenly turn into baying Dobermanns and run at you for several paces before sniffing your feet and each other's arses again. 'Sorry. Thought too hard. And for fuck's sakes, vampires... look, there's enough people thinking that, that there's actually starting to be the bloodsucking types. We haven't had that since... well, we've always had a few, but this is ridiculous.'

'It's an established belief, so, yes.' Lena lies back on the bench, stretching herself out. She's the slender sort, long and slim - you can see her ribs through her t-shirt. 'See. People have beliefs, and they have thoughts. And while there are certain things can't really be contravened - that's what science is about, right? - some other things there's some leeway. You know. Markets. Or... sports. Things people do.'

    'Not following you.'

'Some people gain influence over others through these things, right? Politics, you know. Or... singing, art, writing. You and I and some others, we're slightly luckier. We get - well, I got, and you just got - given some keys to influence people. I mean, consider how many thoughts a person has in a lifetime, or even in a day, right? How much energy and force goes into those thoughts? But of course people rarely ever act on them all the time. But we can use that energy, a bit of it at least. You're at the bottom rung. But there you are. You can see some thoughts, and nudge them around a little. With some discipline, you can do more things.'

Most of the time, the amount of thought we draw to keep ourselves going won't affect people. It's like a momentary sting, a sudden fit of fatigue at most.'

    'But it can be worse.'

'The draining, yes. If you focus on someone too long, mix your thoughts with theirs, they suffer. We... aren't good with people as a whole, as you might have guessed.' She sighs. 'Of course, if you drain an enemy at one go, he dies. It can be pretty bad. You want to know something about those murders?'

    'Yeah?'

'They weren't murders. Suicides. One man hammered 14 nails into his head before he died. Another woman gutted herself. A boy puts his head in the oven, then he turns the oven on. Imagine the smell. That's what a good, thorough draining does. You are tearing humans from their humanity.'

I couldn't see who it was at first, so I feared it might be you. He was very much of the height of summer. A cloud of flame and shadow. Impressive stuff!'

'No, I sat on a toilet and got bitten in the arse by a radioactive snake in Borneo. Well, no, when I was sixteen I got gang-banged and stabbed several times, and under the stress I manifested and killed all four of them. Well, no, I don't actually want to tell you.' She smiles.

'Have you tried it before, yourself?'

She shrugs. 'Twice. Once, when I manifested. The second time was in a fight. I simply needed the energy to go on, or I would've been destroyed.'

'Me? I haven't joined one yet. It's only been three years. But anyway. Skill is not the same as the means. You can of course practice, but everything you do will run on thought. So practicing itself will require you to use other people's wills, capacities - it's a hard thing to define, but you get what I mean.

'That's another... thing, Dylan. From here on out, we gradually stop... really thinking and feeling what we used to. Well, thinking about it, there seem to be a few options if you're looking for work.

There's the jobcentre Joe told you about, which is up in the city centre. Kate's bank is also there, in the financial district.

If you want to go where other young people are, there's the Scholar's Town, also known to many as Wankers' Town, where five universities have their campuses along two main roads. It's busy, studenty, and cool, if you're into that sort of thing.

Alternatively, you could go around Mavensgate. This area isn't too bad, and it's not far from Joe's and Kate's. Come think of it, you're not going to be using their place as permanent digs... right? You'd have to keep influencing them, and what Lena told you isn't very encouraging.

Just as you're thinking, you hear a loud argument where the cafe is, and feel a strange twinge of emotion, a powerful energy. Rage feels like a shot to the arm.

You go towards the cafe, still feeling a little of that rage. You also realise that, by drawing into yourself - your fear of fire, your liking of onion rings (two very sadly contradictory desires, one must say) - you can keep the voices out. But it also makes you a little distracted.

    Nothing much at the cafe.

Following the park map, you head out of it and along Mavensgate West High Street, where a long row of shops beckons. Many are posh, including the stationery store. A guy with an eager smile hands you your ruler for $2. Seriously.

    > Money: $37.50

You know your index finger is rather shorter than your middle. Maybe if you tried to extend it so they're the same length - it'd be easy to tell. Your middle finger is about 9.4 cm.

Also, yeah, you're hungry. There's a chip shop up the road, and two pubs farther down. Then you see a sign saying 'Street Food Market!' turning right into what seems like a parking lot. The place isn't very busy now, at least.

    There's also a hairdresser's, a bookstore - two bookstores - and some vintage stores.

We'll have to call, say that we found that paper before the crimes, what was on it, and that's all. Then end the call and be on our way.
There is thousands of us in one city of 16 millions IIRC. I'm pretty sure the government has a few fingers in the pie, they can deal with this.
Plus, there was this thing with the cop that shot someone and got away with it in trial, he probably influenced his way out of jail.

Also, in terms of finding somewhere to live, if you're done with the old dingy and crowded towns, Mavensgate is nice.

Tamerton, Crown Oak Glades, Breghtleyvale are also around this area, in the southwest of the city, and very pleasant indeed. Posh places.

    > Well, let's go get a kebab first.

You go to the place and see the food carts all around. There's hipsters in skinny jeans or loose t-shirts and denim shorts all around, nibbling on street food that Indians and Thais and Chinese and Jamaican blokes are churning out.

You thought to have a kebab, but you end up having a falafel sandwich instead, for $3. No wonder people eat here.

    > Money: $34.50

You sit down at a recently vacated spot, brush the crumbs off for the pigeons, and then you notice your hands. You... they've become rather slender, and your fingers seem really... nicely proportioned now, somehow.

'Hey there. May I sit here?' You look up and see a ginger guy with a roast beef sandwich. 'And is this seat taken?'

    'Sure, there's just me.'

He sits down, and soon he is joined by a dyed redhead with a violin case. She puts it down, nods at you, then looks at your hands. 'You've got... lovely hands, if I might say so!'

She then looks surprised that she said it. Maybe your powers are being a bit more pervasive than even you thought...

They are indeed longer. They appear longer to you, they feel longer, they appear longer to most people who will see it. But if you think about it hard enough you could dispel that, and if Lena was to see your hands, she'd quite quickly see that they're as short as they were before.

Of course, since you didn't feel yourself get uglier in front of Lena, it appears most psychs will try their best to accommodate each other's images and appearances. Tearing them away is probably the preserve of hostility...

Thinking to look for someone to parasitise off, you go around Mavensgate. You wonder if you should also try going to Mavenswood and Cranewood.

As for the protests, they seem likely to go on for a while yet, so there's no rush. In any case, this city has protests and big events all the time.

You go to a phone booth to make the call. The police perk up a little when they hear you talk about Stanson Way, but then tell you they'll get back to you for more information, thank you, and hang up.

How are they going to get back to a bloody phone booth?

Meanwhile, you go around the place, trying not to think about anything - instead just seeing, feeling, other peoples' minds. There are plenty of interesting tidbits which you zoom in. You know there is an ageing man living on the third floor of 226 High Street.

You also know that along one of the side streets there is a woman, about 35 years old, whose dog has just died; she's taken time off work to mourn.

Then you hear a crash, and some yelling, and you don't need to be a psych to tell that there's just been a nasty break-up or maybe an eviction.

Hmmmm. Meanwhile you stop in front of a cafe. The smell of bread being baked inside is very nice indeed, and there's a cat scampering about. Do you like cats?

From what you can glean of peoples' thoughts - there's plenty of students here after all, and you just saw some groups trickle back in as if from protests in the city - it seems to be about giving civil rights to corporations.

(I'm East Asian, yes, how'd you tell?)

So what do with the cafe? You move on a little and wait a few minutes, until you sense the mourning woman is coming out of her place and coming downstairs. Soon you catch sight of her, a woman with a short bob, wearing frayed jeans and a t-shirt.

You throw your senses around, but you don't feel much else of interest. There are students coming back, all psyched up from the protests, though. And also, from what seems to be a nearby primary school, the young, naive anticipation of the end of a school day.

You decide in the end to simply go down the road, passing the woman by. She seems to be completely distracted, and her grief leaves a literal bitter taste in your mouth.

Man, you need to shut out sensations more effectively. As you walk down the High Street, though, you come across two other hobos begging. 'Change, please. Change please.'

Also, you suddenly have a hunch and back up a little, sensing something - someone - in a bookstore. Someone is frustrated about not having a flatmate to share the flat with. You go in and, tracing the thought, see a young woman, probably a Carpenters student, flipping distractedly at a book. Is Carpenters an art school or something, you wonder.

You are pretty sure you wouldn't be allowed into the bank, to influence Kate's boss. You are also pretty sure Kate wouldn't allow you to try without you doing some serious thought-pushing. But you could do that if you so wish; you have the keys, as Lena said.

Meanwhile, you go up to the girl and take the book beside the one she took. The Analysis of Art in the East - wow, that's obscure.

'So... if you're reading this stuff, you're from Carpenters, I'm guessing?'

She looks up at you, slightly startled. 'Um... yeah. Why?'

You talk to her about the exorbitant rent around here, and soon the two of you get talking. Her name's Michelle, and she's really frustrated.

'There's that lovely studio flat actually, I've been thinking of getting it, but the landlord is such a bitch about the rent. Won't put it any lower!'

You ask her the question, explaining that you are an exchange student and you haven't got digs yet, and she thinks it over for a while. Meanwhile you attempt to probe and see what she's thinking, and watch with satisfaction as she comes down in favour of it.
