YOU ARE ALEX RASTON. About an hour ago, you got up and had breakfast with the team. Currently Mooch is repairing what little damage is on your cores, while you wait for a call from the Arena about your next match.

Talk to Ari about Training. We can use our arena fights as review material and make sure she's doing well.

We're supposed to drill instructor her and part of that is watching over her growth. Having her be able to use her AC for our benefit would be a great boon.

You go to talk to Ken about possibly modifying your laser rifle.

"Well, we can change some capacitors around, and realign the main refactor array. That'll give you a bit more punch and a tighter beam, but it'll also double your power draw."

    "Will that be an issue?"

"Nah, you've got plenty to play with. Worst you'll see right now is maybe a tiny increase in cooling time when you start laying on your thrusters."

Higher minimum and maximum output? Sounds like a good trade. And we can always fall back on the slug rifle if we're having energy problems.

One minor concern: is this gonna have any effect on our maintenance times or costs? I remember Ken mentioning that custom gear is more difficult to do maintenance on. Granted we aren't exactly talking about a scratch-built pair of reverse-joint legs with components from half a hundred companies; but if my adventures in the world of 3D printing have taught me anything it's that tweaking one little setting can make a world of difference, for good or for ill.
    >> AC-Guy 05/02/12(Wed)00:31 No.18944745
You tell him to go ahead and do it, and then notice Ari was listening in. "So you can modify guns like that? How practical is that?"

"It's a decent option, and a lot cheaper than trading up. But there's limits to how far you can push a part from it's original design before it all falls apart. Plus it's usually better to just trade up to a bigger gun if you can, but if you were to get a smaller gun and tweak it to put out the same damage as a Karasawa, you could reduce the weight drastically, assuming you had a power supply to back it up."

"Why would you want to do that?"

"Smaller faster cores, more carrying room on bigger ones. For the same energy it would take to power a particle cannon, you could launch and steer a pile of smart missiles the size of your core. And a powerful beam cannon has a lot of potential firepower, and you don't have to worry about running out of ammo in a fight."

    "What if your generator's damaged?"

"The same one that powers your boosters? If that happens then you're fucked for a completely different reason."

She's quiet as she thinks about this.

Seeing your work as accomplished you....

"Apparently when they switched her to the new medicines Fraid prescribed she started looking and feeling better pretty quickly. Doctor's say she'll need a week or two to recover fully, but she should be well enough to leave the hospital in a couple of days if she wants."

You wince slightly. "I'm a pilot, that's different. She wouldn't be in a core or working."

"Just sitting around feeling like she's dragging you down. I've got a spare bedroom, she can stay over here. I can watch her, and make sure she's doing alright."

"I really don't want to impose..."

"You're not. I'm happy to do what I can for you and your friends. Now I'm going to go start setting up the room for her. I'll be by later to talk." She then hangs up on you.

You turn to Laurie with a smirk "And that's how you get things done."

".... You're really good at that. Doesn't that bother you?"

"That I just gave Kate a nice place to stay and recover close enough that your constant trips to check on her won't hurt us too much-" He opens his mouth to protest, and then shuts it again "-ensured that she would be well taken care of, and put my Mom in a position to help us, which she's been desperately trying to do while letting her think it was her idea? Nope. Doesn't bother me at all." You turn to walk away and....

    >Same possible actions, but now strike Laurie and Mom from the list.

You get ahold of another terminal and give Josh a jingle. After a moment he answers. Then he sees you and smiles. "You got good timing. Some of the boys over at Omer said they had an offer I wouldn't be able to turn down tto make me their corperate bitch."

    "What'd you say to that?"

"That if it was that persuasive I didn't even want to hear it. Caught the tail end of your match against the Snakes. Tell Dave I owe him a beer for that last line. I've been trying to think of something that good since first time Butch pissed me off."

    "You know him then?"

"Kinda. He's mostly bark, not a whole lotta bite. He's a decent enough kid when he remembers to get over-himself or something shocks the asshole out of him. But him and his friends feed off of each others stupid and it just builds up until they do something crazy like enter a tournament they're totally unprepared for. Now they'll mope, build up their confidence doing LITTLE fucking stupid things, until they build themselves up to do something like this and get their ego smashed back down to manageable levels."

"Heh. Speaking of the Tourney... how secure is this line?"

"Reasonably. Give me a second and I can put it well past unreasonably." He goes quiet and looks off screen. The display flickers and he talks again "Alright, now we're on a military grade encryption. By the time a super computer cracks into the feed our conversation will be over. Now what's up?"

"Not the slightest damn clue. Not only did I not know, but when Mooch looked into the data trail was gone."

".... Now THAT'S odd. Anybody want you dead?"

"Other than Mooch's evil crime boss Father, whoever was behind Hope and the fucking Ninjas that keep coming in and trying to kill us?"

"Well no shortage of- wait, ninjas? You've been attacked by Ninjas?"

"Twice. I'm starting to think that they're breeding in the duct-work."

"Well look on the brightside: Getting attacked by ninjas is probably the weirdest thing that's going to happen to you in this lifetime."

"Hah, no. Discounting MOOCH, I'm starting to hear voices and hallucinate when I'm in my core, and the first ninja attack was interrupted by Nine-Ball who said he was shooting me with a mind control ray."

"...what the actual fuck? Alright, the hallucinations aren't that weird, it's a side effect of a high synch ratio, but the Nine-Ball thing.... have you ran into him since then?"

"During Arena registration. He mentioned in passing that he knew my Dad when he heard my last name on his way somewhere."

"....Really not sure what to tell you there man. Looks like you got caught up in something fucked up brother. I'll let you know if I turn up anything."

    "Thanks Josh."

"No problem. Hey, when you win this tourney I'll grab some champagne and help you celebrate."

"Hey Steve, it's Alex. I was hoping Dervish had something for me?"

"Mmmmaaaayyyyybeee.... Hold up. HEY MIKE!" He yells away from the camera "THAT GUY WHO KICKED YOUR ASS WANTS TO TAL-" And that's when the boot catches the side of his face, and the camera goes out for a second, before it resettles on Dervish at what's clearly a different computer, looking mildly annoyed.

"How.... how did they make it through two rounds?"

"I'm trying to figure that out. I can't see any logical strategy here. They just booby-trap everything shoot rockets around and stab anybody who gets to close to them. Otherwise they just sorta wander around, occasionally shooting rockets, and dancing."

    "Dancing?"

"Dancing." A video clip opens in the corner of the screen, with what looks like a gangly bird-bot doing 'the shopping cart'.

"From the looks of things, they had inside help. The local unit was deployed when the attack went down, and another team stopped in for repairs or something. It looks suspicious as hell, but not as much as the suspect list. I KNOW some of those people, and the ones I see fit the evidence, but not the character of the man involved."

    "You think they're being framed?"

"Maybe. What weirds me out is how that's happening up there, and there's a team here that claims to be Wolf Pack. What the hell is a military force from a sovereign nation doing in a fucking arena fight?"

You find Elsie upstairs, trying to find something interesting to watch on TV.

You help, by grabbing the remote and changing the channel to some sort of giant robot show.

"Why do you want to watch this? It's an outdated cartoon-"

    "Trust me, just watch."

After a few minutes, you recognize the Episode. You KNOW her reaction's going to be good.

"So what are we doing here, counting the technical inaccuracies?"

    "Yep."

"Alright, what the hell kind of space magic allows a single particle to contain the sun, jam radars, and give people psychic powers? That's just dumb. Real science doesn't work like that. And is that guy wearing sunglasses inside a giant robot?"

"They're prescription apparently. It comes up in a later episode, but I'm not sure how far to trust it, since he claims he was prescribed them to counter his lack of badass."

"Why would- he just took out four planes with a throwing axe. What the fuck."

About twenty minutes later the episode ends. "Did you like it?"

"That is a half an hour I will never get back. I have no idea what I just watched, lost count of the technical errors, and I'm setting the TiVo to record every episode of it ever."

    "Welcome to my childhood."
