"You know what? I gotta see how they try to hype up a mech fight. Patch it through."

After a moment a video feed pops up, and you can see crowds cheering as a black man with a modest 'fro and red wrap-around shades struts around on a stage, suspended between two helicopters, above the main arena pit.

"Hello there ladies and gentlemen!" He says, and the crowd roars. "I will be your host for this Lovely evening of carnage in Sin City! Now, the ladies call me 'oh Bay-Be' but YOU, dear viewers, can call me Mr Smooth. And we will be bringing the action for you ALL NIGHT LONG!"

The crowd goes fucking wild. Fireworks erupt from the sides of the stage as he's hoisted out of he Arena.

"Huh." You say. "So that's what one of these look like."

You get a call on your coms. Looks like it's the captain of this team your facing, asking about terms. Apparently if both teams don't agree to battle conditions, it's randomly selected.

You opt to answer the call.

"Hey there, you the Snaps team captain?"

The voice sounds oddly familiar. "Yeah. You wanted to talk terms?"

"Pretty simple actually, I'll give you choice of terrain if you give me game type. I think a best of three , one-on-one rumble would be best. I mean, I want to put down the maximum entertainment value, and I'll even tell one of my guys to take a fall if we start kicking your ass too bad."

"Now why would you do that, on top of giving me choice of battlefield?"

"Because the better the show, the more people put in the pot to bet. The House ALWAYS comes out ahead, and it splits some of the winnings with the little guys. So if we make this good enough, even if one of us gets wiped here we won't be in the hole for entry fees and repair bills."

Sounds pretty good. Your team actually works very well flying solo, and there is some truth to what he says. Then again, he seems pretty confident in his victory regardless. Maybe they also do better solo. Or maybe he's just arrogant.

Then you place the voice... "Hey, this is going to sound weird, but were you playing some sort of a robot fighting arcade game this afternoon?"

"Shit, THAT'S where I know you from? you were the T-Rex guy right? I was the Lion thing. Alright, win or lose, we meet up for beers after this."

You pick the city Arena, while Mr Smooth's voice rambles on in the background about a word from sponsors.

You team is told to board a high-speed rail with the three members of Team Mo Betta. You take the opportunity to look over their cores, and review what you know about them.

One of them is piloting a Heavy bipedal with some serious boosters: clearly designed more for quick evasive manuvers than rapid movement over a distance. He's packing two sets of missile pods, and what looks like some sort of jamming equipment. Dedicated jammers are rather rare, since chaff works about as well. If he's banking on no-ammo, then clearly he's built to survive a fight for a while, wars of attrition style. He's got two heavy-caliber chain-guns, and a pair of Heat-Rods on what looks like a custom high-speed rail system. So engaging up close is suicide, and he's built to love a drawn-out slugging match.

One of the others has a pair of auto-cannons, and a tank-tread system. Clearly a heavy weapons platform build. He's also got way more missile pods than any sane man should.

The third guy is the Captain you spoke to. He seems to have gone for a completely different route than his colleagues. While they're geared more to an extended throw-down, this guy's core look lighter that Laurie's. It's got a weird looking beam saber in it's left hand, some sort of full-blade emitter system with an inward curving blade. In his right hand a.... beam rifle? Huh, that kinda look familiar....

    You recognize that rifle.

That's a fucking Karasawa. Then you realize the blade in his other hand is a Moonlight variant.

Then your stomach drops, and you hit him with a quick, damn near silent ping. He's radar invisible.

So he's extremely fast, that jamming suite on him combined with that means that he's going to be damn near impossible to hit, ESPECIALLY in an Urban environment. You also take small comfort in the fact that the rifle would have to charge a shot, and the blade is Melee only. But he really only needs one good hit with either to take you out. Generally Assassin builds like this are piloted by two kinds of people: complete idiots, and exceptional Aces. And an idiot couldn't afford a Karasawa.

Doing a quick calculation, you realize that the only person equipped to actually try and fight this guy is you. Suddenly his earlier confidence makes sense: he only needs one of his team-mates to score a kill. A team battle means people watching their backs, and multiple lines of fire, one on one though, he could push this core to it's limits out here.

The best chance you have would be to put Laurie against the biped, and Dave against the Tank. If both of them win, you won't even have to enter the ring, but if one of them fails, you're in the best position to try and fight this guy. Then you spot the Ace Patch on his shoulder: a pair of scimitars whirling in a complex pattern, with a mad dancer between them.

Dervish. This should be an interesting fight.

I was thinking getting to a high place as well, but, that also screws us over

Pros: We have a high 360ish view of area
Cons: We have to watch said 360ish view of area without radar and can't stay still for too long

I suggest, we find him as fucking fast as we can, maintain visual contact at all times, and stay in mid range. Don't let him get close, but don't let him get far enough away or in an area where he can slip away. Probably have to go full out offense on him. Don't let up, or we could do what we did in Hope against nine ball. Let him hit with that MLv he has and then secure a kill by getting as close as possible without being lit up.

True, my main focus for that was avoiding him jumping us with melee using radar invisibility.

Given that he's segmented between melee with his blade and isn't the best at mid range due to the Karasawa's charge time we might be better off fighting him somewhere where we can control the distance and boost between buildings whenever the Karasawa charges. If he moves forward to use the blade move back, if he tries to use the Karasawa dodge and punish with rifle fire.

We're going to have to play to our strengths here, mobility and mid-range combat.

Our first priority will be to get visual confirmation on him and keeping him in sight, if he slips out he could literally be anywhere as far as we know.

Keeping eye contact is the most important thing. The issue is, he can make us break eye contact whenever he fires his gun, if he is a true ace, he will use that to make us dive into cover while he does as well, effectively blinding us to where he is and then he can sneak up on us again. It's why I suggest the fast, all offense tactic to keep him mid range, and when he fires his gun the first time, we are going to have to go with closing the gap and allowing him to try to hit us with the MLv, taking an arm maybe or something, in a suicidal blow tactic that will allow us to unload into him at close range. Keeping it at mid range, unless we can ALWAYS maintain eye contact, will be bad because we will HAVE to take cover from his beam rifle, which eliminates the purpose of having eyes on him at all times TO keep him at mid range.

    >Make Contact
    >Keep within sights
    >He begins charging gun/rifle
    >we have three choices, fire on him, and hope to disrupt his aim, evade and take cover, breaks eye contact and ability to track him putting him at the advantage, or charge him, taking him by surprise to see a mid-range build closing hte gap with him with an obviously outclassed AC, he reacts as he should bring his sword to bear but we anticipated and went for a "our arm, for your head" tactic (tried to stay away from face for you AC-Guy)

First into the Arena is Laurie. He and the other guy enter the city at opposite ends. You switch to the crowd feed, and mute it upon hearing Smooth's voice. He is only fun in small doses. You then open up an audio link to Laurie's core, and set it to receive only. He tags up some auto-turrets around in idle mode to act as surveillance, and then goes to ground. His opponent comes skating up one of the main roads looking for him. Clearly wanting to keep his mid-range advantage.

When he slides around one corner, Laurie hits him with a cluster of dumb rockets, and opens up with all his turrets while his opponent reels. Quickly though, his opponent boosts up, spins, and disables the turrets. He then apparently opened up an audio channel to Laurie's core.

"You know, I'd be willing to let you just back out of this now."

    "....Why?"

"Well, maybe I'm just a bit old fashioned, but I really don't like hitting girls. so if you were to surrender...."

Judging by the sharp intake of breath from your squaddie, that was EXACTLY the wrong thing to say.

He never finished that sentence. Laurie kicked his head off and took out both his arms with one sweep of his flail, and the rest of the taunt is lost to pained gurgling.

Then Dave gets his shot in the fight. The tank guy immediately goes right to a small industrial area, with lots of wide open space, and just waits.

A few minutes later, Dave realizes the man isn't going to give up his favorable ground. So he readies his weapons and tries to rush him.

Unfortunately, with his opponent holding the range advantage, he's unable to do much other than launch cluster-bombs and watch him casually side-step them before resuming with the wall of bullets. Then after a few minutes, Dave's core is noticeably starting to slow down. He has decent armor, but the constant chipping away is really taking it's toll. He decides on a desperate gambit: With one move, he dashes in and hits the core point blank with his cluster-nades. It cripples both it's main weapons, and effectively ends the wall of bullets. Then Dave darts around the back and readies his Heat rod, aiming for the motive connector between the top and bottom halves. That would be good enough to force a mobility kill and end this.

He never saw the rear-mounted cluster missile until it too late, and lost both his legs in the process. You hear a brief, agonized scream over the coms before he blacks out.

You realize that his team is much better than you gave credit for, as dusk slowly begins to come in. "Well then." Dervish says over the com. "Looks like it's me and you now. Hope you fly as good as you look." And with that he vanishes into the cityscape while you watch the countdown begin.
