96 KB Nomad Quest Part 5 - Well Excuse Me Princess Priest of the 24 !!Bj+uCsh7Spg 04/25/12(Wed)19:03 No.18860988

Your name is Thol of the Lolua. You are the last of your tribe.

A sigil placed on your persons is leading you towards Homme to meet the Green King, a highly important Druid by the name of Thaddeul Arethos. You and Eames Bennet, a summoner and amateur scholar of magics, were about to cross the border into Vanthania when you caught sight of a carriage. Inside the carriage was a young woman robed in white, the same that Eames had been swooning over since dawn.

Intrigued by the two of you, the young woman let you on board. She, too, is on a mission to see Arethos, a short stop before her (probably) final pilgrimage to Rooksland. At the border of Vanthania, your new acquaintance reveals her identity: as Princess Siobhan of Thulstry, and the Green Maiden.

Eames is in shock. Siobhan seems quiet since the border guard revealed her identity. The carriage rocks to and fro. What now?

(Also, I love Dragon's Dogma. Tempted to make every NPC the players have met so far.)

Eames is hopeless. A devout maiden and a princess. Never has one man's fair lady been so concisely swept from his grasp. He is intent on staring blankly and tapping his fingertip against his lip. You decide to let him him be for now and instead ask Siobhan about her life as a Princess.

"I can't be entirely sure, Sir Thol." She offers an awkward smile and shrugs. "I wasn't treated like my sisters. I was never present in matters of the court. My destiny, from birth, has been that of the Green Maiden. My father cannot have me marry. I cannot become a Queen. I cannot bear children. My sole purpose is to serve the world and bring as much life to the frozen north as I can. If I can reverse the curse of the undead, then so much the better."

Out the window, you are beginning to notice a drastic change in the landscape. No longer is it the rolling, golden fields and olive trees of sunny Settehem, but field after field. In the distance, you see that you pass more than one town, and cross more than one river. The weather is becoming cooler, but it's still a warm, sunny day. You just passed the booth, but you must have actually crossed into the country some hours ago. Some feet away from the carriage, you see a rabbit bound into some tall grass.

Well I'm sorry that you're purpose in life was decided for you, perhaps after you finish your mission you'll be able to find a path for yourself.

Though you did sort of dash Eames's hopes and dreams against a rock, you're a noble and a devout priestess, I feel sorry for him.

    >>18861446

Your late reply brings a chuckle to the young woman's lips, at least. And it also seems to be what rouses Eames from his waking slumber. The summoner stamps on your foot. Heavily.

"Is there nothing to be said for dignified silence, Thol!?" He huffs, fixing his glasses and sitting straight again. Siobhan smiles at you from across the carriage.

"You seem to travel in good spirits, Sirs. Alas, as loyal and strong as my guardsman, Cu, is, he's not quite as comical as you two."

Then she turns directly to you again.

"Sir Thol, were you with those other nomads from last night? Forgive the intrusive nature of my question, but it seems like you had a quarrel then left them. I was worried the black haired one would draw his sword."

"Destiny?" Eames chirps up. "Restoring balance to the world? ROOKSLAND?!"

Now he's staring at you with the same eyes he stared at Siobhan.

"Wait, wait, Thol! You didn't tell me that your plan was to head to Rooksland! I thought it would be Homme then back to the Reach but... do you understand what Rooksland is?! It's a desolate wasteland, a kingdom laid to waste, the only things that live there are the undead and the few humans who manage to evade them. Even the Mad King cannot control them anymore! Why under the Mother would you want to go there?! Few, very few people cross north into that hellish country and manage to come back, you understand?"

Siobhan's head dips low, shrouding her gaze with her hood. She knows all too well what Eames speaks of.

It calms him down. A little. At least he's no longer shouting.

"This is really the kind of thing you mention to a man when he decides to elope with you."

Siobhan raises her head and stares at you.

"I mean elope as to run away with an accomplice, of course," Eames sinks low into his seat. The lady sighs and leans forward.

"Excuse me, sirs, I know I'm not supposed to do this, but I'm sick of travelling like this, one moment." And in that moment, she pulls down her hood. Spirals of vibrant red hair, a much lighter, brassier colour than your own, tumble out, held in a clip that's the same shape of her insignia.

"We shall be hoping to cross Vanthania in a matter of two weeks. On our way, we'll be stopping at the towns of Rickenlest, Crassburg and the capital city, Vol Itolstein. But I'm afraid most of our nights will be spent on the road. Of course... I am to assume that you two already have camping equipment, yes...?"

She asks with a degree of unease. Regardless of whether she likes you two or not, of course she'll be feeling a bit uncomfortable with the idea of letting you two share the carriage with her.

And from here, you three are on the road. You can decide to fast travel to your first stop, Rickenlest, if you wish. It will be five days. Food will be deducted automatically and if anything comes up on your way, I will bring up a prompt and you can decide whether to interract or ignore. Of course, there will also be some things you can't ignore. At any time mid-travel, you can feel free to talk to any of your current party, including Cu.

Everyone stops for a meal. Luckily, the Green Maiden is as generous as she is doomed to die a virgin, so she offers to let you share some of her stock. Just for tonight.

Afterwards, you go on the road again, but you decide to let Eames get some quality alone time and sit up front with Cu. You are passing over great, green hills as a cloudy evening descends. You can see some battlements at the top of the highest hill. There is probably a castle just over it. Some beggars pass on the way. Recognising the quality of carriage, they don't even lift their heads to ask for alms, but rather clear the road.

Cu glances over you. He's not too tall, but probably has about twice your mass in general. Unlike the Princess, his skin is not fair, but rather a kind of clay colour, a grey-ish brown.

"You know that if your friend attempts to lay a finger on the Princess, he'll lose the entire arm, right?"

It seems you cannot hear the inside of the carriage due to the wheels and hooves of the horses. You assume it's the same for them.

The man gives a chuckle, his broad shouldered form giving a slight jostle that almost knocks you off the seat.

"No, Nomad, it is not. Previous to this life, I was a slave to the marauders of Vinlim. Prior to that, I reared camels with my father in Sersipa. It was the King of Thulstry, Siobhan's father, that freed me. Said that no man need labour under one he does not swear loyalty to. I was a long way from home. I was hungry. I hadn't made love to a woman in five years. So I swore loyalty to the King and became a guardsman. Now, I'm Princess Siobhan's personal servant. Heading to Rooksland..." He drifts off into silence. "Maybe I should've kept rowing boats for the Vinns." He grins. "What of you, Nomad? I can tell this is your first time outside the Reach. What do you think of the world?"

The nine theoretically alchemizable sources of magic are fire, water, earth, air, light, darkness, soul, nature and lightning. The ones for which the source is currently know are fire, water, earth, air, nature and soul. Metal is not compatible with alchemy, apparently. Hm... wonder how they figured that out..."

He dips into his tent. Soon, Cu returns and sits down by the fire.

"So... Nomad. Tell me," he speaks in an increasingly low tone. "What exactly was said between those other nomads and you? I didn't want to mention it before incase your answer was overheard by the Princess, but she's sleeping now."

By the intensity of the stare he's levelling on you, you can tell this isn't a request for information.

I told them I'd go there after I went to Homme, this annoyed them but they conceded. They're probably following us but are unlikely to do anything.

As for how to reply to Cu, I'd say tell him that they were on some sort of quest, which they wanted you to join them on, but you had prior commitments, so you refused, which one of them took badly, but it all got resolved peacefully in the end.

"Be plain with her, Nomad. If you are going to Rooksland, you are welcome to join us. However, if you lie, you will shake the Princess's mind, which must remain still and peaceful. You recognise where you are. Along the southern coast of the Reach, there's a village of fishermen. It wasn't a part of your annual trip, but rather, your father had business here and decided to bring you along. You're only eight. So far all you know of life is travelling, playing and reciting what the tribe matron teaches you. The two of you overlook the rudimentary docks that have been built. It's not a big village, probably one of the newer ones, but the people there seem happy. As your father leads you through the village, two girls, both slightly younger than you, with blonde hair and ruddy complexions follow along, watching you both from a distance. This was probably the first time you realised that you, your father and your tribe are not like most people.

"Son, do you remember who the patron spirit of the Equius Tribes is?"

    "The Horse?"

"That's right." He turns down to you and smiles. You've both come to overlook the sea, now. The breeze is cool, bringing a freshness to the otherwise warm haze. A seagull passes, heading for the nearby cliffs, and calls out. "What do we know about the Horse?"

"Um... she's the spirit of freedom and strength!"

"That's right!" He reaches under your arms and easily lifts you up. From your seat on his shoulders, you can't even see the dock beneath your feet. All you can see is the ocean.

"The world is vast, Thol. One day, you will have to see much of it. We live a good life on the Reach, but... the world is not equal. Not all live as happily as we do."

You try to look down at your father, but you can't see his face.

"But, we help people in need, right?"

"On the Reach, yes. But you won't be able to help everyone, Thol. You will have to decide, when the time is right, between more than one person to help, more than one path to walk."

A boat appears in the horizon. There is only one man rowing, another seated, in long brown robes. He stands and removes his hood. He's an adult, with long, brown sideburns that go into a beard that doesn't quite meet at his chin, and his hair in a long ponytail. He raises his hand in greeting. Your father does the same.

"This man is a friend of your father's, you understand? You may meet him in future. If you do, I want you to trust him. Even if your heart wants otherwise. What do we say about the Horse's whim?"

"The Horse's whim is a road not taken."

"The Horse's whim is a road not taken."

The long-haired man steps onto the wooden dock and steps towards the two of you. Looking directly at you, he opens his mouth to speak, but it's not his voice that comes out.

    "Thol! Wake up, wake up!"

Cu marches to the front of the carriage and unties the horse before hopping on its back and riding ahead. You look around for any signs of them. You don't see any giveaways, no dropped brooches or footprints. You can either roll a 1d10 for perception or head in one of the four directions. Behind and head are more of the same road you've been travelling over. To the right of your carriage and camp is a steep hill. You can climb it but you don't know what's over it. To the left is a drop, not too steep, but leading into a wood. It's not too large, overall, but you can't see past the trees. You can, however, hear a river in the distance.

    >>18864463

You take the hound to Eame's tent and have him sniff out the bedroll. Then you release it. Just as you do so, you notice some recently broken branches at the top of the slope into the wood. The dog bounds in that direction and begins to make its way down. You follow, less easy on your footing and so, somewhat slower. By the time you reach the bottom of the slope, you can no longer see your hound. But very soon, you start to hear barks, then growls. Then you hear snarls reminiscent of the ones you heard back in Losaid. A voice cries out, that of a girl, and you hear Eames's voice.

You call out, and eventually come out into an opening. Eames's looks at you, bewildered, his hair dishevelled, before replying.

"What are you talking about, you bloody idiot, I caught her fair and square, your dog's not going to have her for dinner!"

The dog in question has it's teeth sunk into her. Her being the rabbit that Eames's is desperately trying to pull away, his other hand smacking the dog with a stick. Siobhan's face is bright red, her hand covering her mouth as she squeals with laughter. She's holding two more rabbits by the ears. Eames looks to you again.

The speed you've gained from running down the hill translates into one hell of a punch. You hit Eames in the gut hard enough to send him flying back, and given your proximity to the river, you soon hear a great splash of water. The lapse of concentration causes the dog to disappear and you burst into a fit of laughter, the rabbit in question falling to the ground. Eames sits up and garbledly demands an explanation as you and Siobhan continue to laugh. However, the mirth is interrupted by a sudden, booming call.

    "PRINCEEESSSSSS!"

From the same hill you descended rushes Cu on horseback, his short sword drawn and held aloft. He just passes between you and Siobhan, desperately trying to pull on the reins. The horse manages to skid to a stop but, given that it is unsaddled, the rider comes right off the top and also lands in the river. But just as quickly as he is down, he is up again.

"UNHAND ME, VILLAIN!" He frees himself from the clutches of the shallow water, before taking a moment to look over the situation. Then he sees Eames using his sleeves to wipe his glasses. And promptly floors him.

"Cu, stop at once, we were hunting rabbits!" Siobhan rushes into the river to pick Eames up, her hood falling and her robe sticking to her legs as she comes out of the river. Now you can see why they made the garment so concealing. She has quite the set of pins. Eames would no doubt be staring if it were not for his current disorientation.

"Did... did we get the rabbits?"

"We got the rabbits, Sir Eames." She replies in a mothering voice as she leads him up the hill, three rabbits in her hand. Cu trudges out of the river and begins to lead the horse up, too.
