    >Perma-saging can eat a dick.

You are STILL Alex Raston. After Giving Elsie a quick kiss on the cheek, you go to talk to Mooch.

When you get there he's muttering dark things at the toaster, while looking uncomprehending at the empty coffee pot.

    "Hey Mooch?"

"There is no coffee, and the toaster won't cook my bagel."

    [ ] Make coffee.

As much as I love Halberds my personal preference would be for a winged spear or a boar spear. It means you can get some good stabbing in, not as good swinging though, if you get some speed up you can do serious damage or just fuck up anyone who runs/jumps at you.

The wings mean they're stuck away from you instead of being able to take it through somewhere non-vital and run up the spear, which makes your weapon useless and lets them stab you. If they're stuck on the end of your spear their mobility is shot and you can dispense with them at your leisure, swing them around like a rag doll, shoot them with something they can't avoid at that point.
    >> Anonymous 04/23/12(Mon)02:44 No.18825085
    >>18825065
A pole-arm might fix that somewhat, to where we can at least stab and attack in melee outside of conventional blade range. Boosting towards us would be dangerous too, since we could just brace it then and have them impale themselves on it.

"Shit I never even considered that. How big of a deal might that be?"

"I'd rather avoid it for now, but sooner or later, I'm going to have to deal with my father. Later I think would be better, but I'm not going to put my preferences before Hope. Now I'm gonna let you make the call, and while you do that I'll wire the money over to Zack to help the colonists."

I really think that the other man on the team needs to give us his input too. In a 3 man team there needs to be cohesion, so if Dave doesn't think Mooch or Laurie would be good, we should know.

So after the thing with Cass, ask him about the arena himself.

You find Dave working at his terminal, with Cass sitting nearby.

It seems as though she's decided to take her mother's instructions to stick with Dave as literally as possible.

    "Hey Dave."

    "Alex."

    "Any progress?"

    "Something. I got pinged."

    "What?"

"The system she had for a low-key communication. It's like a digital drop-box. I put in a simple handshake message she'd recognize as me, without attaching any personal information. And someone pinged me. Only one who could have done that was Molly. Or somebody she clued in. Now she knows I'm in town, and need to talk, and I know she got the message."

    "So when's she coming?"

"Not even the slightest clue man. It's as vague as possible as a safety measure. Fucking spy games man, patience is a virtue."

"What, with a gun to my head? They're both good, but Mooch has publicity issues and something's really eating at Laurie. If you can get his shit straightened out enough for it to not be an issue, then he is the objectively better choice in my opinion. But if we go in there, we need to win. After a few minutes of searching, you hear a little beeping noise. You shuffle the sand around, and catch a little chain on one finger.

Pulling it out of the sand you see that it's a little cross, cheaply made. Looks like pewter maybe? Can't be more than an inch long. Laurie spots you holding it and walks over.

    "This it then?"

    You are Lawrence Brenner.

You don't really know why you're acting like this. Some small part of you wants to go back and apologize.

Most of you just doesn't care right now.

You stumbled across an abandoned hangar nearby on your first day here. You find it again easy enough.

Under the seat you find the other two of the three bottles of whiskey you bought the other night. As you walk into the building you snap the top off of it and start to chug. As it burns going down, you realize this is probably a bad idea. Pretty soon it doesn't hurt as much. Maybe if you drink enough it'll stop hurting all together.

Pretty soon it's half empty, and you have to come up for air.

    It's a start.

"Go away Alex." He half slurs at you.

You see his fist come up. You step inside his reach and body-check him.

He's clearly not going to calm down. You need to end this fast, and you need to get that Whiskey out of him before he starts to properly metabolize it.

He goes for a kick, you step back. He comes back for another punch, and you're quietly thankful he's so far off his game, or you'd never even be able to touch him. Then again, if he were any less worse off you probably wouldn't be in a fist-fight with your best friend in an abandoned building.

You lean outside of his swing and grab his shoulder. With one swift move you ram your knee into his stomach, and he falls down. A moment later you start to pick him up and hold him as he starts to puke. Looks like he got most of it out of his system. Then a minute later something else in him finally breaks loose, and he starts to cry.

After a long moment you realize you've never seen him cry before, and you just have him let it out.

After about an hour he pulls himself back together. Another hour after that, and he finishes his brooding silence.

"Sorry." he says. You've never heard him sound so.... fragile. "I guess you deserve an explanation."

So, what. We're criticized when we change our course of action halfway, AND we're criticized when we stay consistent? AND we're supposed to play nice when someone's downing entire bottles of hard liquor?

I have no regrets. If Laurie's gonna be this much of a liability to the team, a team which has a lot of responsibility and debt to shoulder, he can damn well blow up all he wants. We can't have this shit.

Also, tone of voice plays a huge part in how this is received. You're acting like we're going to put on our batman voice and start growling at him. We could just quietly say something like "Yeah. It's obvious you're hurting. We all are. But we're a team, and that means we all look out for each other, even if someone thinks they'd rather hurt alone. You almost killed yourself now, and on top of losing Hope...that'd be too much to take. Please talk to me."

Or, you know, we could act like indecisive pussies who are unwilling to confront our best friend when he's drinking himself to death over an emotional wound he's too damaged to share. Because that's what a good friend does, right? It's also what a good commander does when one of his only pilots starts going off the deep end.

I think we need to apologize to Laurie soon.
We fucked up after things went down in Hope.
We weren't there for our bro when he needed us.

In my experience /tg/ as a collective has THREE personalities in quests.
I will categorize them by character names:
The first, is the SHINJI. Afraid of confrontation because of not wanting to piss anyone off.
Second, is the JOKER. Does shit because it's "lol so randumb" or because they legitimately think it's the funniest option.
Third, how we are in this quest most of the time, is the KAMINA. Sheer hot-blooded, bull-headed manliness that will punch you in the face while yelling at you to "Grit those teeth!" in order to fix your psychological trauma.

Wow thats actutally, well fuck maybe we should apologize, I mean we had our own mental breakdown which probably would be exactly like this if we didn't have Elsie.

No one has really been there for him, he kinda became the loner of the group. And rather than burden the group more with his problems he just carried on, did his job and kept a stoic face. Also we kinda knew he was having problems, just not this bad.

"Yeah," you respond, doing your best to keep the anger out of your voice "I think maybe I do."

"....You remember Kate? Worked at that one Cafe?" You nod, and he continues. "Other than you guys, she was probably the only person who never tried to fuck with me. I've always gotten the shit end of everything, mostly because of how I look. So I just sort of decided to just.... I don't know, fucking compensate? I guess? And so there I am in a nutshell: I look like a woman and act like a total douchebag. And somewhere past all that, she saw somebody worthwhile. So I did what I always do: acted tough and blew her off."

His face sinks behind his knees "I never could get over myself long enough to actually talk to her. I'm not going to say something retarded like how I secretly loved her deep down, since I never even thought about her that much. The night before Hope got destroyed, she stopped by the cell and gave me this." He tosses the cross you got out of the sand earlier on the table. "Said I clearly needed it more than her. She went and brought it back to me after I already threw it away for the third fucking time. So I put it back on, and I went to sleep. Next day...." His voice trails off. "I could've done something about that you know. You almost got that one guy, by yourself. If I went there I could've easily tipped the balance there. I chose to stay behind. I'm fucking RECON. I should've been in there before anybody else. And don't try to feed me some line of bullshit about how it isn't my fault. The militia existed to protect Hope from exactly that sort of shit. regardless of circumstance, we fucking failed there."

He's quiet for a long moment. "Remember that bus you grabbed? I found out she should have been on it. Gave up her spot at the last second to toss on a woman and her two kids instead. I can't stop thinking about it. I wonder if she knew she wouldn't make it out if she didn't get on. If she just decided they were worth more to the world than her."

...this was all his own damn fault. We shouldn't have to babysit our team, and he could have told us this at any point. Still not regretting anything here.

Still, that's no reason to be a dick about it, so let's just work calmly. Laurie needs to stop trying to play the manly man and pretending all his burdens can't be shared. We know he's awesome, and he shouldn't have to go out of his way to prove it to everyone else. So basically:
    >[X] You could've told me about this.

Also, put me in for a secondary suggestion of having Laurie in our team for the arena. Yes, he's recon, but look at it this way - Laurie wants to be seen in a better light, at least from his own perspective. What's more manly than helping your bros out in the arena? It'd help his reputation a bit, I think, just like it'll help our own.
    >> Anonymous 04/23/12(Mon)06:06 No.18826853
[X] ....Come on. Let's go home.

Well fuck, time to get some rest, he is probably not feeling well from the booze/fight and mentally drained. Time to go to bed, also since he talked about how he feels better in the core talk about the arena, and how you'd like to get him spec'd out to be more involved in a fight.

Ideally we could use this as a driving factor for him to be the best dam pilot he can be. Funnel his negativity into something good for now, and slowly try to help him come to terms with what happened.
