You slip your hand into his pockets and fish out a stack of cards.
"My cards!" He says as he struggles with his bindings.
You slowly look through the deck.
Theyre a mix of MtG, Pokemon and Yugioh cards.
There are even some Mushiking cards thrown in.
Most of them have been defaced using a permanent marker with little notes like "COOL!" "AWESOME!!!" and "HAXXX!!"
You turn back to him.
"We will let you go. But I will keep your cards. I want you to find out more about this masked man. I also want you to find anything about any black and red robed figures."
You pick out the blue eyed white dragon cards and examine them.
They're knock-offs.
"You will report back to us at noon tomorrow with any information you have. If you fail to come back, then I have no idea just what will happen to these."
YOu wave the card in front of him for emphasis.
"Okay! Okay! I'll come back with info I swear! Just don't harm my babies!" He pleads.
"Good. I will be waiting for you at noon then."
You pocket the cards and walk out of the room with your team.
The heavy metal door slowly closes behind you once more.

We should have our new safehouse set up before we go to the RL district, OR we could come back here. Either way, make sure we have an unobstructed path of retreat.

Let's go check out the streets, try to buy some supplies for the RL district. I'm sure a lot of those cosplay suits are made of latex or rubber, that'll be important. Compressed air cans can be turned into tiny grenades, etc.

Concerns:

Girls- Are they good with yet ANOTHER addition? Don't forget we have Perrine, Yuki and Miki coming in as well, and Nahona in a few years. If we push this too far they might start to feel used or resentful of newcomers.

Bureau- At some point they are going to get fed up with our hacking of constructs and lay down the law.

Hypocrisy- If we save one construct, we acknowledge that every construct is possibly worth saving. This is essentially "freeing the slaves" where the slaves are an entire universe of AIs. Would we try to get the Bureau to cancel the loop and let them continue as a free universe?

Hypocrisy subsection: Retaliation- Would the Transpace Guard detect the creation of a new universe by the Bureau and step in? Would they harvest it for reality emitters/bombs and "recruit" everyone inside? Would we be freeing them, or damning them to an eternity of Human Resources?

Frankly, I think that simulations like this should never be created, or the simulations should be left as unaware constructs.

My vote here is to not hack the construct, and to petition the director to make the constructs non-sentient.

Nowhere is really normal. Most places aren't as flamboyant with their oddities but they have their idiosyncrasies none the less. People tend to be less willing to express everything about themselves to everyone around them, which I suppose is a good and bad thing.

No matter where you go people are people, they all laugh, cry, sing, dance and care deeply for things. Whether they are obsessed over minutia of a twenty year old anime that lasted 3 episodes or if they live for their "normal" corporate job.

Though honestly I am one of the worst people you could ask about this, my childhood was anything other than normal and I spent most of my time living on the fringe and looking in from the outside rather than experiencing it from the inside.

The only way to really learn this kind of thing is to experience it for yourself, my opinions are infinitely less important than your personal experience when it comes to judging a life lived.

The way I see it, LG is a good writer BECAUSE he is a good troll. Allow me to explain:

A good story is one that has tension and drama in it. These things come from the characters dealing with the obstacles set before them by the writer. The more troublesome these obstacles are, the more tension is generated, the more emotion we experience as a result of the story.

LG provides these obstacles by trolling his characters, and by extension, the audience. Sometimes (like right the fuck now for example) he even trolls the audience directly on a meta level.

Why does it matter if you're wrong about your wife's birthday? What purpose does getting the date of your wife's birthday correct serve?

It prevents you from causing harm to others, even if unintentionally. It allows you to make accurate predictions, and thus allows you to more effectively influence the world around you for the better.

If you know your wife's birthday is on the 15th of May, you can predict that she will be very happy if you get her a gift on that day. If you do not know that your wife's birthday is on the 15th of May, your wife will be sad when you unintentionally disappoint her.

I also feel an element of obligation to myself to believe things that are true. I don't want to let my head be cluttered with useless or incorrect beliefs that would limit my ability to interact competently with the world.

YOur brick proved to be a dangerously versatile weapon as you used it as both a blunt weapon and as a projectile.
Hina dispatches her attacker with a swift jab to the gut.
Gai brains a pair of them with his pipe.
Naru manages to hold off the last one with her chain.

As you approach the last remaining standing ShirtNinja, He pulls out a small paper wrapped ball.

I think this is where our disagreement is. I don't care if you kill me and create a dozen identical clones, I'm still dead. Everything that is unique about me would have been copied twelve times over, but the consciousness typing these words would have ended. If you end Naru's consciousness and create a new, identical consciousness, the first Naru still died because her consciousness ended.

I think there is a very substantial difference between preventing harm and doing good, although it might not always seem so. Well, obviously I can't expect everyone to value truth as much as I do. Frankly, most people just don't think about what they believe as long as it doesn't cause major problems. A whole lot of other people have entrenched their beliefs as part of their identity, and view any attempt to change their beliefs as an attack on them personally.

First thing I'd do is to just see how open they are to changing their beliefs, and how important that belief is to them. While most people just don't think about their beliefs, nobody really wants to be wrong, and if it's just something trivial about, say, the feeding habits of koalas, most people are going to change what they believe if given adequate evidence.

If it's something major like a religion, that's gonna be hard. If it's just a sort of feel-good wishy washy "nice things happen after you die" harmless sort of religion, I'm just going to leave that alone. Maybe let them know I'm atheist and talk about how awesome the universe is in a general sort of way, so they see that you don't have to believe in an afterlife to find beauty in this life. If they bring the subject up, I'm not going to not talk about it, but I'm not going to call them weak-minded, either. That's pointless for anything but audience-appeal. Unless they bring the subject up, I'm not going to go off on a rant about it, but I'll drop little bits of bait now and then so they know I'm open to talking about it.

Ultimately, I'm going to try to change their beliefs one way or the other, but I'm going to try to not be an asshole about it. Being an asshole would be counter-productive.

Factually wrong? The medical definition of death does not support your definition of it, since function is restored via backup.

As for the continuation of consciousness, that's your stated definition of what constitutes death. I would argue that it's not death because a backup of the consciousness is available. This is no different than having a vivid dream and then not remembering it upon waking, or of taking memory-blocking drugs before doing an action, then having absolutely no recollection of what was done during the time that the drugs were active. Your definition of death is presupposed on consciousness itself and only itself being the determining factor, and that it can be divorced from the physical components that it runs on.
Experiments have shown that this is not the case, that the physical is very much linked to the processes that run on them, both in organic humans and in computer programs.

All-around you, machinery in various state of disrepair lay rusting in several inches of water.
High above you, portals in the vaulted roof let in shafts of light from the surface.

You explore the place as a group, water sloshing with each step.
Everything smells like mold and rust. A faint scent of ash also hangs in the air.

You look around to try and find any clues of anyone passing through here.
Nothing catches your eye.

As you walk up a staircase towards a catwalk that run along the upper level of the factory, someone calls out across the factory floor.

"остановить!" You turn to see a man wearing goggles and rags. He's holding a crude sear made from a length of pvc piping and a shard of metal sheeting.

Your translator kicks in this time.

Several more similarly clothed people emerge from nooks and crannies they were hiding in.

True. There is no good answer to this problem, other than to prevent it from happening in the first place. If we wanted to solve this, we'd have to petition the director to make the constructs used in simulations non-sentient.

Same thing with the clone. If you were cloned, and placed next to your clone, you would not be able to see through both pairs of eyes or hear with both pairs of ears, because you would be separate from them. You and your clone are not the same person.

I figure you can look at it one of two ways:

The first is that since you are forced to live with other people, your identity is not in a closed system and is thus affected by others, most directly by how they perceive you.
If everyone around you perceives you to be a certain way (even if you aren't), they will treat you as such, affecting how you respond to a given situation.

The second is much more abstract. That the definition of 'you' is not only your mind, but also anything else that is so similar as to be indistinguishable from you. In this way, others perceiving you create a sort of clone of your personality that also counts as 'you'.

This is actually what I've been arguing against. There can't be anything "so similar as to be indistinguishable from you". Even if it was a perfect copy, down to the atom, it would still be distinguishable by its position in space or time. If your body was rendered into atoms, and those same atoms were used to make a new you in exactly the same place, it still wouldn't be the same you, because the pattern that is your consciousness was interrupted for however long it took to dissassemble/reassemble you.

Hina and Erica look at each other and then look at you.

"Of course." she reaches the base of the stairs and begins to climb towards you.

"Go on. Give her a hug." Erica says with a grin as she pushes you towards the lady.
She reaches you and holds you silently for a full minute.
Before the minute is up, you feel her give your butt a quick squeeze.

"He went through there." She finally says as she pulls herself away from you.
She's pointing towards a nondescript door near the end of the catwalk.

"Thank you, ma'am. Some more of my men should be following us through here as well. Would you also give them safe passage?" You ask her.
"For those firm buns? Anything." She smiles as you head off.

You walk through the door and find yourselves in some sort of office, a file cabinet has been overturned revealing a crack in the wall leading to another tunnel.

Your group walks in through the crack and back into the dark, damp tunnels of Undercon.
