You slip your hand into his pockets and fish out a stack of cards.
"My cards!" He says as he struggles with his bindings.
You slowly look through the deck.
Theyre a mix of MtG, Pokemon and Yugioh cards.
There are even some Mushiking cards thrown in.
Most of them have been defaced using a permanent marker with little notes like "COOL!" "AWESOME!!!" and "HAXXX!!"
    You turn back to him.
"We will let you go. But I will keep your cards. I want you to find out more about this masked man. I also want you to find anything about any black and red robed figures."
You pick out the blue eyed white dragon cards and examine them.
    They're knock-offs.
"You will report back to us at noon tomorrow with any information you have. If you fail to come back, then I have no idea just what will happen to these."
YOu wave the card in front of him for emphasis.
"Okay! Okay! I'll come back with info I swear! Just don't harm my babies!" He pleads.
"Good. I will be waiting for you at noon then."
You pocket the cards and walk out of the room with your team.
The heavy metal door slowly closes behind you once more.

    Actually I was.

I used to watch 4chan catalog, but his twitter is quicker.

LG, we had a big fight last thread: Are these simulation characters real, sapient AI, or are they just more refined Chatbots? Moral questions, you see.

I gotta say LG, you really power through this.

I tried running a quest or two a few years back, and I got a hostile reception, or ignored.

How do you get people involved early on?

You head back up to the warehouse and into what you now refer to as the throne room.
The four of you find yourselves alone in it.
Raymond possibly in his shop, and Naru still with the prisoner.

"So. We seem to be picking up more and more weird people to take care of. And every moment we spend here, R's trail goes colder. What do we do now?" Erica asks you.
"I find it unsettling that two seemingly unrelated events both lead to the red-light district." Hina says truthfully.
Gai stoically nods at you, as if to say he leaves you to decide.

WAT DO NAO OH MASTER BUTLERS?

    To the red light district.

We should all wear stuff that won't stand out that much and we should try to turn our swag down a bit, it might be of detriment there, we'll fail to turn it off but at least we'll have tried.

We should have our new safehouse set up before we go to the RL district, OR we could come back here. Either way, make sure we have an unobstructed path of retreat.

Let's go check out the streets, try to buy some supplies for the RL district. I'm sure a lot of those cosplay suits are made of latex or rubber, that'll be important. Compressed air cans can be turned into tiny grenades, etc.

They knew they had a very short life expectancy, they took very few things seriously and they set out to enjoy whatever life they had. So seeing something like that? Most of them would of probably laughed. Erich Hartmann probably would of loved it if any og the stories about him were half true

Also, we need a way to have kraus store large volumes of liquids for us. Potion fuckery has been our bread and butter for most fights. Lets see what he can do to help us with that.

Also, next time we go into bunny mode: Touch Fluffy Ears.

You see a bunch of half naked people slapping each other with what appear to be legs of pork.
The blood and fluids splatter everywhere.
"Doesnt seem that bad." You tell him.
"LOOK AT THE FUCKING LOWER RIGHT CORNER. FUCK."
    You do as he says.
    It was bad. Really bad.
You can't describe it further than a midget, a black guy and a large woman doing unspeakable acts to and with a dressed turkey in a kiddy pool filled with some liquid you don't wish to identify.
    Your mind goes blank.

"Erica. You can stop slapping him now." She tells the German girl.
    "Please." YOu add.
"Oh. Right... Yeah." She lowers her hand that was still poised for another strike.

"So. What did you see?" She asks you
"Bad things. Horrible things. We will need weapons when we go there." You tell your team.

They speak all the local languages, have friends in every district, they'll blend in, disappear. They've already got a day head-start, and we'll likely never see them again.

Otherwise we could have just gone to a Home Depot in the suburbs to get a handful of bricks.

Under a pile of costumes tubs of makeup and some hairdye, you find a katana disguised as a fully functional umbrella.
There is also an MG 3 disguised using orange paint, and belts of rubber tipped ammunition for it.
"D-DIBS!" Erica shouts from the bed still rotating and vibrating.

A doll that turns into a gun is also in a corner of the box.
There's also a brick in a special leather harness with the words "DEMON SLAYER" Inscribed upon it.
And finally, there was a the fur suit.

It looked like a fanciful yet menacing mix of a snail, a and a dragon. It was covered in sickly green coarse fur. On its head was a pair of antlers and large rabbit ears.
'Christ. I do not want to wear that.' You think to yourself as you put it aside.

With a full inventory now complete, and the rooms as secure as you think they will be, you settle in for what remains of the night.

The constructs in the simulation may be based on real people, but their behaviors are still restricted by their programming. They have not shown any ability to perform beyond their parameters.
So they are sentient, in the actual definition of the term, but they may not be sapient.
Also, they don't die. They just have their memories restored to those at the beginning of the simulation and thought-patterns are put in stasis, not stopped.

LG has stated that she's sentient.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sentience

    >Sentience is the ability to feel, perceive or be conscious, or to have subjective experiences. Eighteenth century philosophers used the concept to distinguish the ability to think ("reason") from the ability to feel ("sentience"). In modern western philosophy, sentience is the ability to have sensations or experiences (described by some thinkers as "qualia"). For Eastern philosophy, sentience is a metaphysical quality of all things that requires respect and care. The concept is central to the philosophy of animal rights, because sentience is necessary for the ability to suffer, which entails certain rights. In science fiction, non-human characters described as "sentient" typically have similar abilities, qualities and rights as human beings.

    >What is the difference between "stasis" and "stopped"?
The difference in computer programming is that Stasis or Paused means that the process remains in memory without additional CPU cycles assigned to it.
Stopped means that it is removes from memory and the memory space is reallocated.

A paused process is resumed with all memory addresses intact. A stopped process must be restarted from the very beginning.

And that's not even getting into processes which can write all of their current memory allocations to disk for later restoration.

AI's are not a simple binary between 'dead' and 'alive'.

Anyway, she's sentient. She seems very much devoted to our service, and personally attached to us. I don't see what the big question is. I wouldn't leave my DOG to a hellscape of a con like this, and I certainly wouldn't leave a person.

I can empathize with wanting to "save" her from an eternal loop of a not nice place. Hell, I'd want to save someone from an eternal loop of heaven, because it's stagnant.

    Concerns:

Girls- Are they good with yet ANOTHER addition? Don't forget we have Perrine, Yuki and Miki coming in as well, and Nahona in a few years. If we push this too far they might start to feel used or resentful of newcomers.

Bureau- At some point they are going to get fed up with our hacking of constructs and lay down the law.

Hypocrisy- If we save one construct, we acknowledge that every construct is possibly worth saving. This is essentially "freeing the slaves" where the slaves are an entire universe of AIs. Would we try to get the Bureau to cancel the loop and let them continue as a free universe?

Hypocrisy subsection: Retaliation- Would the Transpace Guard detect the creation of a new universe by the Bureau and step in? Would they harvest it for reality emitters/bombs and "recruit" everyone inside? Would we be freeing them, or damning them to an eternity of Human Resources?

Frankly, I think that simulations like this should never be created, or the simulations should be left as unaware constructs.

My vote here is to not hack the construct, and to petition the director to make the constructs non-sentient.

I would say that death is a permanent cessation of consciousness.

Simply being mind-wiped shouldn't be called death. It may significantly alter your personality, depending how much is wiped, but you are still alive. We can't consider a specific personality it's own entity, otherwise things like rhetoric and persuasion could be considered lethal weapons.

That depends, if your memory is wiped and you become a significantly different person afterwards, you are alive in the physical sense, but the you that you were is now dead. It no longer exists.

Your definition of death includes reversion to a previous backup, as well as all instances of memory manipulation, no matter how slight.
Your definition would also include natural memory deletion as death, since a memory has been deleted and a thought process interrupted.

Would you say that a person who cannot form long-term memories is constantly dying, then? The same applies to a person who cannot form short-term memories, but has their long-term ones intact.
Your definition of death would put both of these types of people into the category of dead.

Her consciousness does end. She doesn't have any personalized hardware like a brain, she's run on a computer that runs a lot of other AIs, so she can't be run all the time. Even if she doesn't die on a reset, she'll still die when the computer reboots.

What do you mean if you lose your whole memory you don't die? If you've lost everything that makes you you, how have you not died? Just physical continuation of a body is not enough, or we wouldn't consider the brain-dead dead.

    >>18789399

Your definition of death includes reversion to a previous backup, as well as all instances of memory manipulation, no matter how slight.

Reversion yes, manipulation maybe depending on how memory works. If we're talking about the real world, altering memory would require physically altering the brain, so yes. You die, and there is a new person almost like you in your place.

    >Your definition would also include natural memory deletion as death, since a memory has been deleted and a thought process interrupted.

If a memory is forgotten, you're obviously not thinking about it. So your thought process hasn't been interrupted.

Note that all the previous entities that we've hatted previously were animals. Were they sentient? Why did we not take any issue with making them so? We knew fully well what we were doing with the panda, yet nobody raised any ethical complaints then.

I assume then, that it's because she has a semblance of humanity that the ethical quandary arises. It goes back to a very fundamental choice of the human condition:

Would you rather live in ignorance and continue to be happy? (or at least, what you think is happiness)

We should care about the constructs because we just learned that they're sentient. We did not care about the kids because we did not know they were sentient, if they actually were sentient. Now that we know there is a high probability of them being sentient, we should care about them as well.

Hayate doesn't know any of this anyway, so it can't actually effect how we act in-quest.

If I try to divorce myself from what I've been TOLD is the right and wrong in regards to what's alive and whether or not we should kill it or save it, I come back to this:
Humans wanting to save and protect other humans arose as a result of early man needing to stick together to survive. We as human beings, continue to want to save other people we recognize as being a part of our group in order to ensure not only survival, but happiness.

So really then, the only question is this: Assuming we were to Hat her, who would be made happy?
Ourselves? Her? Our girlfriend? The Dude? The Director? These are the people whose opinions and emotions matter to us. We should, if possible, seek out their advice on the matter before acting.

Nowhere is really normal. Most places aren't as flamboyant with their oddities but they have their idiosyncrasies none the less. People tend to be less willing to express everything about themselves to everyone around them, which I suppose is a good and bad thing.

No matter where you go people are people, they all laugh, cry, sing, dance and care deeply for things. Whether they are obsessed over minutia of a twenty year old anime that lasted 3 episodes or if they live for their "normal" corporate job.

Though honestly I am one of the worst people you could ask about this, my childhood was anything other than normal and I spent most of my time living on the fringe and looking in from the outside rather than experiencing it from the inside.

The only way to really learn this kind of thing is to experience it for yourself, my opinions are infinitely less important than your personal experience when it comes to judging a life lived.

The way I see it, LG is a good writer BECAUSE he is a good troll. Allow me to explain:

A good story is one that has tension and drama in it. These things come from the characters dealing with the obstacles set before them by the writer. The more troublesome these obstacles are, the more tension is generated, the more emotion we experience as a result of the story.

LG provides these obstacles by trolling his characters, and by extension, the audience. Sometimes (like right the fuck now for example) he even trolls the audience directly on a meta level.

They just don't want to "admit defeat" by acknowledging they were wrong about something, and they definitely don't usually do it right in the middle of an argument. If they do change their minds, it will be a while later, in the middle of the night when they've got nothing to do but think.

    You take the brick out.
    And Gai readies his pipe.
Naru has her chain at the ready.

The light goes out suddenly and you are left with just you flashlights once again.
Hidden panels in the dirt in front and behind you lift up and disgorge a about 10 men dressed in tattered clothing and armed with bits of wood and unconvincing karate hands.
Their faces have been covered by a shirt tied around their heads.
"Shirt ninjas." Naru's eyes glower in the dim light.

    They attack.

    >Why does it matter to you that your beliefs better reflect reality? I'm not trying to be provoking, I'm asking what purpose it serves to have all your beliefs be correct.

Why does it matter if you're wrong about your wife's birthday? What purpose does getting the date of your wife's birthday correct serve?

It prevents you from causing harm to others, even if unintentionally. It allows you to make accurate predictions, and thus allows you to more effectively influence the world around you for the better.

If you know your wife's birthday is on the 15th of May, you can predict that she will be very happy if you get her a gift on that day. If you do not know that your wife's birthday is on the 15th of May, your wife will be sad when you unintentionally disappoint her.

I also feel an element of obligation to myself to believe things that are true. I don't want to let my head be cluttered with useless or incorrect beliefs that would limit my ability to interact competently with the world.

I would also have to ask you if you care about your beliefs being correct. Do you?

Your belief of what constitutes death is based upon an opinion, a belief, and not something actually concrete or based upon legal precedent.
Partially, of course, this is because AI rights in the real world have not been a topic of serious study in law yet. But also because a person losing some of their memories, even short-term ones as would be what would be akin to memory erasure procedures, does not legally constitute death.

Also, there was an argument that an AI exists independent of the hardware that runs their processes, that their consciousness is divorced from the machinery that runs it, and that they are different from humans who have personalized hardware. This is incorrect, as processes and programs may or may not function as intended depending on the hardware that they run on.
The AI being reverted to an earlier state does not kill the AI, since what made the AI unique is what is recorded in its backup.

Erica opens fire and sends the group in front sprawling.
IN the tight quarters of the tunnels, there's no cover from the barrage of rubber bullets she hurled at them.

You Gai Hina and Naru face off the other six coming in form behind.
YOur brick proved to be a dangerously versatile weapon as you used it as both a blunt weapon and as a projectile.
Hina dispatches her attacker with a swift jab to the gut.

Naru manages to hold off the last one with her chain.

As you approach the last remaining standing ShirtNinja, He pulls out a small paper wrapped ball.
"SMOKE BOMB!" he says as he throws it on the ground.
*poof* A tiny cloud of smoke escapes the crude device.
You grin as you stoop down to pick up the brick.

The flying brick hits the back of his head effectively stopping him.

"Well, that was quick." You say as you pickup the brick once more.
"ShirtNinjas. I thought they were all extinct after that flood two years ago." Naru says as she puts away her chain.
"Just who are these guys?" Hina asks her.
"Small time criminals." She explains. "THey never fit in with the Hardcore ninja cosplayers, and they rarely had the money for better costumes, so they found themselves here, ambushing those that are unfortunate enough to enter the sewers."

I think this is where our disagreement is. I don't care if you kill me and create a dozen identical clones, I'm still dead. Everything that is unique about me would have been copied twelve times over, but the consciousness typing these words would have ended. If you end Naru's consciousness and create a new, identical consciousness, the first Naru still died because her consciousness ended.

I'm using the term "world" as a euphemism. If I had a choice between continuing the earth without humanity and continuing all of humanity on a different planet, I would always choose the continuation of humanity. In a sense, people/sentient/things-that-can-feel are the world, or at least the only world we should care about.

Preventing harm and doing good are sort of equal or even the same thing depending on the situation. Saving someone's life is both preventing harm and doing good.

    >I care more about improving other people's lives than I care about my beliefs about things beyond my control being correct.

I was referencing that very page, and was providing a... roughly similar definition as given on that and linked pages. A "knowledge" is a thing that is evidenced to be true, hence knowing a true thing, or a "justified true belief." You could argue that it is still "a belief," and be accurate, but it is also "a knowledge," which is separate from a "belief" as that is a thing with out such evidence backing it up.

Thus, you want your beliefs to be knowledge.

Maybe I interpreted the information given, I dunno. I don't entirely care, either. I wouldn't claim to be a trained philosopher. I wouldn't claim to be a trained anything, really.

I was using 'world' to refer to everything other than people. What I mean to be saying is that,
I agree with you about making accurate predictions and interacting in a competent manner.
But beliefs often stretch far beyond such things, and more often then not, I see that people would rather disrespect, ignore, hate or even harm, rather than try to understand, when someone else has different beliefs.
And as I see the world, interacting with people in an effective and helpful way is much more dependent on whether you can understand them than whatever your beliefs dictate beyond the present circumstances.
I think there is a very substantial difference between preventing harm and doing good, although it might not always seem so. One can prevent harm by acting as a shield between others and the rest of the world and whatever evil is being inflicted on them. But to do good, one must become invested in helping that person make their life better. Am i making the difference clear?

Not talking about here or elsewhere on the internet, but someone you can have full human interaction with, a relative or a friend. How would you try to change the belief in such a case?

Well, obviously I can't expect everyone to value truth as much as I do. Frankly, most people just don't think about what they believe as long as it doesn't cause major problems. A whole lot of other people have entrenched their beliefs as part of their identity, and view any attempt to change their beliefs as an attack on them personally.

First thing I'd do is to just see how open they are to changing their beliefs, and how important that belief is to them. While most people just don't think about their beliefs, nobody really wants to be wrong, and if it's just something trivial about, say, the feeding habits of koalas, most people are going to change what they believe if given adequate evidence.

If it's something major like a religion, that's gonna be hard. If it's just a sort of feel-good wishy washy "nice things happen after you die" harmless sort of religion, I'm just going to leave that alone. Maybe let them know I'm atheist and talk about how awesome the universe is in a general sort of way, so they see that you don't have to believe in an afterlife to find beauty in this life. If they bring the subject up, I'm not going to not talk about it, but I'm not going to call them weak-minded, either. That's pointless for anything but audience-appeal. Unless they bring the subject up, I'm not going to go off on a rant about it, but I'll drop little bits of bait now and then so they know I'm open to talking about it.

Ultimately, I'm going to try to change their beliefs one way or the other, but I'm going to try to not be an asshole about it. Being an asshole would be counter-productive.

What do mean by wrong? Morally wrong? Because if so, and we're working with moral relativism, then your definition of death is wrong, because it is not held by the majority. Or are you saying that there are moral absolutes?
Factually wrong? The medical definition of death does not support your definition of it, since function is restored via backup.

As for the continuation of consciousness, that's your stated definition of what constitutes death. I would argue that it's not death because a backup of the consciousness is available. This is no different than having a vivid dream and then not remembering it upon waking, or of taking memory-blocking drugs before doing an action, then having absolutely no recollection of what was done during the time that the drugs were active. Your definition of death is presupposed on consciousness itself and only itself being the determining factor, and that it can be divorced from the physical components that it runs on.
Experiments have shown that this is not the case, that the physical is very much linked to the processes that run on them, both in organic humans and in computer programs.

No, in-character, she's a construct, an artificially programmed collection of objects, classes, and libraries that can be copy-pasted as needed.
The programmed responses are great, very life-like, but they're just based off of a heuristic algorithm.

Our decisions have to be based on in-character knowledge.

Stop thinking so far ahead. If LG wants it to be an option to take Naru out of the sim, he'll make it obvious. And with the noticable effect of our swag, as well as her questions about the outside world, that point is looming on the horizon.

She will probably ask to come with us when the time comes. But until then, quit arguing about the ethics of a situation that hasn't come up yet. Wait and see where the story goes.

You have 6 of the ninjas go and question the ravers.
The rest of you head forwards to the factory.

After a long walk down a brick-lined tunnel, you find yourselves in a large cavern of concrete and steel
All-around you, machinery in various state of disrepair lay rusting in several inches of water.
High above you, portals in the vaulted roof let in shafts of light from the surface.

You explore the place as a group, water sloshing with each step.
Everything smells like mold and rust. A faint scent of ash also hangs in the air.

You look around to try and find any clues of anyone passing through here.
    Nothing catches your eye.

As you walk up a staircase towards a catwalk that run along the upper level of the factory, someone calls out across the factory floor.

"остановить!" You turn to see a man wearing goggles and rags. He's holding a crude sear made from a length of pvc piping and a shard of metal sheeting.

    "остановить!" he shouts again.
Your translator kicks in this time.
"STOP!" he said with his hand up to emphasise the command.
Several more similarly clothed people emerge from nooks and crannies they were hiding in.
Instead of the crude clubs the shirt ninjas were carrying earlier, they were equipped with far more dangerous looking weapons of metal and steel.
You even see some of them holding crude but effective looking crossbows.

"Fuck. I didnt know Apoks were in here." Bob comments under his breath.

Laws can be both morally wrong, such as with slavery, and/or factually wrong, such as with slavery. Slaves being considered 3/5ths of a person for the calculation of population is both morally and factually wrong, and was law in the USA for a period of time.

If a backup of my consciousness is available, why should I care? I am not the backup, I am this body and this mind. You seem to think that if I have a backup, then get run over by a truck, then have the backup take over, nobody has died. Well, I died, and then the backup, who is exactly like I was at a point in time, takes over. The function of my body has not been restored, my body has been destroyed and replaced. My memory has not been restored, my memory has been destroyed. A clone is living my life.

Consciousness can't be divorced from the components it runs on. Consciousness is the components it runs on. We are thinking meat.

    >>18790625
Some, yes. I like John Stuart Mill and Utilitarianism, and this one guy I can't remember the name of who talks about the nature of consciousness. I think his first name is David.

He wrote a great story about a guy who had his brain put in a jar away from the rest of his body, and controlled his body through radio waves. He also had a backup computer that received exactly the same perceptions and functioned exactly like his brain, so as to have a constantly updating backup. However, the computer started receiving data slightly slower than his brain, which was enough to give it it's own sense of self. Do you know who I'm talking about?

    That's just morally wrong.
By the criteria of the term 'population' used, it was factually correct.

    >Consciousness can't be divorced from the components it runs on.
Then by this logic, taking Naru out of the simulator and having her AI run either on an independent construct framework or Kraus' hardware, and draw majaik from us to manifest, still irrevocably kills her because she's no longer running on the original components that were part of her.

Depends if they were ever both around at the same time, though this would be impossible with the exact same atoms.
If they were both around at the same time then theoretically they were not actually the same at least spatially, thus different entities no matter how similar.
However if they were never around at the same time, they are functionally the exact same being and you could argue that the captain of star trek ships has a shorter lifespan than any red-shirt because the teleporter destroys him at least once an episode. Which may or may not be true

    >Then by this logic, taking Naru out of the simulator and having her AI run either on an independent construct framework or Kraus' hardware, and draw majaik from us to manifest, still irrevocably kills her because she's no longer running on the original components that were part of her.

True. There is no good answer to this problem, other than to prevent it from happening in the first place. If we wanted to solve this, we'd have to petition the director to make the constructs used in simulations non-sentient.

    >Yes a specific instance of you has ended, but the entity known as you by others still lives on. And I believe that the former is irrelevant compared to the latter, just as you hold the opposite belief.

I'm glad we could come to some sort of agreement, but why do you believe that?

They were not trying to get a measure of how many humans were in each state, but of how many people, and from there, citizens.
Since a slave did not count fully as a person according to the criteria for 'person' that was legally in use, their definition of population is factually correct.

I believe that a person is the sum of their parts, and that those parts include the perception of them in the minds of others and in other information systems.

But then if you replace the engine in a car it is still the same car

It might not be the exact car that you originally had but it still has the same components and performance of before

So if someone is perfectly cloned down to their memories and thought patterns why would they not be the same person? They think, act and believe the same ways that they always have they just have a new engine in their vehicle so to speak

It's not the same car. It has a different engine, therefore it is a different car. It may function exactly the same as the previous car, but it is not the same car.

Same thing with the clone. If you were cloned, and placed next to your clone, you would not be able to see through both pairs of eyes or hear with both pairs of ears, because you would be separate from them. You and your clone are not the same person.

"I shall accept the drinks. We could always use the sugar. As for the food, we have no need of it. We get all that we need from whatever we hunt down here."
One of her men climbs the stairs to claim the bag of softdrinks.

"This will buy you and your men safe passage." She says as she walks even closer.
"But not information. There are a myriad of tunnels that connect to this factory. The man you pursue could have gone through any one of those."

"What will you take for information? Our weapons? Our flashlights?" You ask her, more than prepared to give any of those up.
"No silly boy." She smiles and shows a mouth full of gleaming white teeth "I WANT YOU."

Citation for that "turns on itself" thing? I'd be interested in reading that.

But you don't define yourself by how others perceive you. You define yourself by how you perceive others perceptions of you. Your perception is still all inside your mind, not the minds of others.

Entirely different person here - but that bit about others perception affecting self is a real thing.
I figure you can look at it one of two ways:

The first is that since you are forced to live with other people, your identity is not in a closed system and is thus affected by others, most directly by how they perceive you.
If everyone around you perceives you to be a certain way (even if you aren't), they will treat you as such, affecting how you respond to a given situation.

The second is much more abstract. That the definition of 'you' is not only your mind, but also anything else that is so similar as to be indistinguishable from you. In this way, others perceiving you create a sort of clone of your personality that also counts as 'you'.

This is actually what I've been arguing against. There can't be anything "so similar as to be indistinguishable from you". Even if it was a perfect copy, down to the atom, it would still be distinguishable by its position in space or time. If your body was rendered into atoms, and those same atoms were used to make a new you in exactly the same place, it still wouldn't be the same you, because the pattern that is your consciousness was interrupted for however long it took to dissassemble/reassemble you.
