"Right, let's go over the details of the mission." You say, as the team gathers around a projector screen Mooch has set up. "We were hired by a corp called Rayleonard to help salvage some form of failed experiment. Mooch?"

"Rayleonard specializes in energy based technology. Anywhere from more efficient batteries to reactors for Cores to power-plants for cities. This computer, the plant that ran Hope, your core, that generator on the tool truck in the corner? All got their stamp on it. Rayleonard is one of the Global 'Super-Corps', One of only about 15 worldwide. In terms of power and resources they're comparable to a small nation. A small, Very wealthy Nation."

"Right. We've been tasked as a security escort for one of their science teams. Apparently they think there's going to be trouble for them. Probably bandits, or maybe another Corp planning to make a grab for the tech before they can get it."

Laurie raises a hand "Where exactly are we going?"

"We're going to be meeting them just South of the city limits. Info from there gets vague, but it looks like there was a research facility of the eastern end of Lake Mead. I f we aren't going there, it's gotta be close. Anybody else have any questions?"

    You take the call.

"You're Zin? Leader of your little squad?"

    "Yes."

"Berlioz. How many cores have you got?"

"Six. Three will be ready for a running patrol in ten minutes, others kept on reserve."

"Acknowledged. Any room in the hangar?"

"maybe enough to Squeeze in another Core if we tried. Why?

"Because I'm coming over to brief you in person. I don't like broadcasting sensitive information."

You order one of the bay doors open, and you see a core come sliding in moments later. It looks strange compared to other cores you've seen, almost lanky and gaunt. It's also slightly taller than any of the other rigs in your bay, save Ari's heavy core.

After it lands, it kneels slightly, and you see the Ace's custom emblem on the side. It's a simple crimson drip off of a Guillotine's edge.

Then the man, who you assume is Berloiz himself, climbs down out of the cockpit and walks over to you across the hanger floor. He has the same presence as his core: dark and foreboding, but not evil. Like walking through an old graveyards and feeling the eyes of the departed on you.

He stops about six feet away from your team. "Here safe to talk? Or do you want to go somewhere more private?"

"We have a proper briefing room just up those stairs. Bit more private, plus it has screens and such."

"Convenient." he comments, before giving a simple 'lead on' gesture. You go to the room, and Mooch slides him the control tablet. The seven of you sit down.

"This is Lake Mead," He says, pulling up a picture of a large body of water. "That little red mark is where our lab used to be, and the experiment escaped containment. The subject, a mentally unstable man who answers to Q-Tip stole an advanced prototype core from Rayleonard."

"Wait," Dave cuts in "I thought this was a recovery mission, us running security while you guys went in and cleaned up."

"And you were told a lie. Not my choice, but the higher-ups wanted some secrecy. This man was brilliant, but unstable. We brought him in to protect him from enemies he made, but he took advantage of our goodwill and plots terrible things with an advanced Core. We can't have that, because that would be an unspeakable tragedy for him to land in, say, Vegas and start blowing up random civilians in the suberbs on the western outskirts." So he clearly knows exactly who you are. "Besides," He adds in a deadpan "That would be bad for business. So my mission is to kill him before he escapes the perimeter, marked as that blue circle. Yours is to stay with the Caravan, because if he breaks out, the Egg-heads are going to reel him right in. Perfect bait, not that they'll like that. Which is why I never told them."

Since you know, we have to worry about corporate espionage. I can however tell you that the stolen experimental core is very unsubtle and very high speed. Literal walls of fire and such. It will be VERY obvious. It's also got some sort of experimental energy shielding. It's not AMAZING, so if you throw enough bullets at it it'll die, shortly followed by the core itself. Luckily other than the shield and the pretty big guns it's got, it's pretty fragile. Any other information is 'need to know', and frankly: you don't."

It is suboptimal I agree but his shield is down, and hopefully we will damage something important or take it out before it gets to that point and we'll delay having to melee as along as possible. But out of all of the people to cross swords with this guy Mooch and Dave are the better choices. If we can't take him out we just have to delay him and live long enough for Berlioz to catch back up.

We delay and missle spam and shoot it out as long as possible but if it gets way too close those two are the ones who have to stab it.

I can understand that you are confused because there is a Mooch the poster and a Mooch the character. This is because Mooch the poster is the actual person that Mooch the character is based on, he knows AC-Guy in real life. There is another actual person who is the basis for Dave, you are not him and should not post as though you were.

You calculate your options, setting up a kill box might be the most effective way to deal with him, but if it's too loose he could slip though and hit the Caravan you're supposed to be guarding. If it's too tight, and he's half as fast as he seems to be, he could go around you and score some kills before you could try and intercept.

You could also go on the offensive, but that holds it's own risks....

    [ ] Loose staggered formation.
    [ ] Tight, hidden kill-zone.
[ ] Try and take the offensive.

A scream of denial, of Rage and pain, as the enemy core begins to get back on his feet, clearly in pain.

You get a good look at it for the first time.

You feel it focus on you, being the closest target. You're reminded of the battle with Nine-ball in Hope, but while that was a focused, eerily calm presence... this feels like a maddened beast. Like a rabid dog lashing out for something to kill.

But he's so focused on you, he never sees Dave approaching from the side.

The blow decapitates the core, and Dave leaps back, expecting that it would be an easy kill.

But that's when the thing goes fucking berserk.

Ari managed to keep calm, tell the retrieval team to run when Elsie first brought it out of the sky. Now you don't have to worry about them, just the maddened monstrosity in front of you. Berlioz says he and his partner are only a minute out, but you aren't sure you'll survive that long.

It stops suddenly, mid spasm, and points it's remaining arm directly at you, and you see a burst of plasma start to build...

You shoot your missiles high, and the core ducks, instinctively.

You unload, right into his head. Or where his head would be, if Dave hadn't taken it off. The bullets travel down the much weaker-unarmored neck of the core, and you can hear the reactor scream and it gets shredded by bullets and laser blasts.

In the next few moments, your core seems to know the danger's passed, and extinguishes it's generator before the breech can can you. As the cameras dim, and the core disengaged from your mind, you can see the core in front of you light up. As the cockpit goes dark, you can feel the shockwave hit the outside of your core, and you get picked up and thrown like a rag-doll.

'Oh goody' you think, as unconsciousness claims you. 'THIS again.'

    >TO BE CONTINUED, NEXT TIME ON AC QUEST.

Well thankfully I think Rayleonard has already written Q-Tip off as bust and considered getting the mech back even in more than one piece as a happy surprise and not an expected result.

Hopefully they count any damage we take from this under "expenses". We might even get a bit of a bonus as Berlioz said he'd try to make sure we got one if it slipped past him and we dealt with it, though they might count our bonus as fixing up our core.

Keep the crunch thread alive, and I'll post something cool on it later.

And something cool right now: the ARETHA was an S class threat.

One Heavy, two bandits pre-quest, flail-guy and the NEXT: Alex just technically made Ace.

Considering that they held back that info specifically so that they could get away with paying us as little as possible, I'd be pretty surprised if they didn't try to weasel out of paying us anything at all. Hell, they might actually try to charge us for damaging their company property.

Yeah, technically they agreed to operating expenses. Which includes core-repair, and spent ammo. Any money you get would be IN ADDITION TO that.

And then we just threaten to let slip that Rayleonard shafted us on payment for a job.
Good luck hiring any Ravens once you have a reputation for ripping 'em off!

You just killed something that two of their Aces let slip away.
Plus, Duke already HAD a conversation with a G.A. America boy who thought stiffing a Raven was a good idea.

And by 'conversation' I mean 'Single-handedly wrecked their compound and dangled him off the side of his own building until he pissed himself'.

Word has gotten around that a global guild of highly trained mercenaries is a TERRIBLE group to fuck with.

Really wish I had the willpower to stay up for these quests; but they are enjoyable reads nonetheless.

Keep up the good work AC-Guy.

    AC-Guy?
Thank you for taking my Richard Branson thing on board. I beam with delight at that. I'll probably have to say it again in the next thread, but just sayin'.
