YOU ARE ALEX RASTON. Today you comforted your girlfriend, trolled your sister, and then confronted a man who claimed to have killed your dad in a training simulator.

Now you're having lunch with your Mother and Elsie.

As you're deciding what to order, the two women start talking.

"So," your mother says "You two often sneak off for lunch together?"

"Nah. Normally we eat with the team. Or at least we did, before Hope... well...."

    "Ah. Sorry."

"No, it's alright. It happened, we need to live with it. But anyway, since we got here everybody's been kinda drifting around. We're all just trying to adjust right now. Plus that was all before me and Alex... well..."

    "You and him what?"

You suddenly realize you never actually told your mother something.

"We started.... well we're together now. Nobody told you?"

"No. Hey Alex, why wasn't I told about this?"

"That's part of what this is." You respond, still debating the sweet and sour pork or the spicy chicken dish you can't pronounce "Things have been so crazy lately that we never really had time to even talk about it. So this is me, making time."

"So you were too busy to bring it up before?"

"When would have been a good time to talk about it? When we were leaving hope behind and coming here? When we were trying to get some income so that people here wouldn't starve for a couple more weeks? Or when I had to get my ribs welded together, and was whacked out on pain-killers for the before and after the surgery? I think it's terrible that we never got to talk, but now I'm trying to fix that." Having settled on the chicken, you set the menu down, and realize that your mother and Elsie both seem mildly shocked.

"i didn't mean too sound like I was accusing you..."

Elsie just sort of looks at you.

"I didn't take it that way. You asked a perfectly valid question, and I gave you the most direct and honest answer possible."

You wait for the realization to hit them. It takes about three seconds to realize that you just claimed you were being straightforward and honest, which should shock them enough to completely overlook the fact that you're bluffing.

Incidentally, it appears that thread #14 was improperly tagged. At least, it was tagged differently than all the other ones so it isn't on the list with the rest of the threads when you search for "AC Quest"

"So what are you two getting to eat?" you ask, as you see a waiter approaching.

"I was going to have this soup..." Elsie responds, your mother wanted some sort of steamed noodle dish.

Thee three of you talk for a while about various things, your mother gently teasing you about the possibility of grandchildren. You take some small comfort in the fact that Elsie seems as uncomfortable at the prospect as you do. After the better part of an hour, you make your way out of the restaurant and back to the Hangar. Before your mom leaves to go help Zack with whatever administrative duties he might have, see gives both of you a hug. She also whispers something to Elsie that you don't quite catch, but her reaction to it was certainly interesting: with the blushing and the clearly shocked expression.

Looking around, it's early in the afternoon and everybody seems busy with one task or another.

You take a moment to plot your next move.\

    "What do you mean?"

"You've been acting weird lately. I thought it was the pain killers messing with you, but now you're more or less clean and you're still kinda...."

    "Weird how?"

"I mean.... you're so serious suddenly. Every once in a while I see something of who you were before, but it's like you catch yourself before you can get too silly. I mean, you were never completely goofy, but it's hard to believe you're the same Alex that once threw a training match because the other guy offered you cookies so his record wouldn't look as bad."

"Alex, I know it's been rough... but talk to us, ok? You can't just shut us out."

"....Alright. I guess I just feel the responsibility, you know?"

"HEY. What happened was NOT yo-"

"Not what I'm saying. These people followed us here because they trust that we'll be able to help them. To feed them, and make sure they survive the coming weeks. I feel bad about my failure at Hope, but that's nothing compared to the stress of knowing more than 300 people are counting on me to put food on the table. I mean, in Hope I ran a patrol. I saw bandits and shit OCCASIONALLY. Here, I've already had more than one near death experience, gotten tangled in some sort of a fucking conspiracy, and am about to go and throw myself back into the ring after having my ribs welded back together."

    You are Elsie Winters.

    And you didn't expect that.

You kinda expected him to be putting on a brave face, but he never let the mask slip until now.

You then begin to understand. you saw most of that from the side-lines. You spent most of that day on the side-lines, and helping people.

Alex watched his family almost die. He then turned around and got into a fight with somebody so far out of his league it's hard to comprehend, and still damn near got him. Then he had to run from the fight, and almost didn't make it out.

He walked out of his old life with broken bones, and took on the responsibility of the entire colony without even flinching.

You see him start to cry a little bit, and you lead him back to your room before anybody else can see. They need the strong, confidant leader to believe in. no matter what it costs the two of you.

It's about an hour later when he pulls himself together.

He never really cried much, the sort of dramatic sobs his sister is known for when she completely loses it. He never wailed or made a lot of noise.

In a weird way, it almost feels more honest when he cries. He doesn't wave a flag around that says 'IM SAD', he just quietly lets it out and moves on.

You walk with him to the door, and then lean against it when he tries to open it.

He looks at you vaguely surprised, while you reach over and lock the door. With a sharp shove he stumbles back and lands on the bed with a slightly pained 'oof'.

You're on him in a moment.

"Elsie?" He asks. "Is now REALLY the time?"

"Yes. Besides, it's not like anybody's going to know. Nobody saw us get back, and the room is soundproofed. What's there to worry about?"

    "My barely healed ribs."

"Awww, you think you ribs hold any of my interest right now?" You giggle slightly at the thought. Alex looks like he's not sure if he should be concerned or aroused. That's just ADORABLE, you think as you cuff him to the bed.

Well, maybe Elsie, but Alex is your brother.

But there seems to be ANOTHER alternative, all you need is an accomplice.

"I heard there was a bowling alley nearby." He visibly relaxes. Heh, he thought you meant THAT. Silly Davey, that's SECOND date territory. Best you're getting tonight is second base.

"Yeah, I'll just check in on Alex, make sure you're cool to-" FUCK. Didn't think of that...

Soon as I got here, I decided 'never again' and I got a suitcase that I then packed with two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a saltshaker half-full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers... Also, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls. Not that I needed all that for the trip, but once you get locked into a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can. The only thing that really worried me was the ether. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge, and I knew I'd get into that rotten stuff pretty soon."
    >> AC-Guy 04/18/12(Wed)02:52 No.18763780
    >>18763776

You just sort of stare at him for a long moment. "How many drugs did you DO?"

"All of them, eventually. Only reason I knew I was from Vegas when I stumbled into Hope with nothing but a pair of pants with a half-smoked reefer in the back pocket was because I got a picture of my OWN FACE on my lower back, with the words 'only in Vegas' around it."

"You got a tramp-stamp of your own face? Can I see it?"

"All that's there now is a slightly dis-colored scar. I've been more or less clean since then. Well, of the bad shit. I still drink too much."

Then you arrive at the bowling alley.

"That and my call-sign when you guys let me pilot."

    "Really?"

"Yeah, A.R. could be Ari Raston, or it could be 'Artillery Relief', or 'Augmented Reaction', or even 'All Revealing'. Between field combat, long range support, and running over-watch, it describes my job perfectly."

Your game, frankly, is terrible. You knew that going in.

but you don't have to be great to win, just less terrible than the other guy.

"Hey Dave, care to make this interesting?"

    "How so?"

"Winner makes the loser do any one thing, no limits. I could even make you clean the toilets~" you reply in a cheerful tone. He picks up on the lighthearted nature of the bet and agrees jokingly. You then spin and put down a strike before he could ask for clarification.

You barely put any pins down, but lo and behold, your shoe came untied when he was moving to throw the ball. And Oh, is that a quarter?

And DAMN the air-conditioning in this place sucks, better take another button off the top of this polo shirt....

By the end of the game, you barely have 60 points. But Dave's is at 23.

"So uh, what were you going to make me do?" he asks, trying not to act nervous.

I like there being a human side to Giant Robots. Giant Robot fightan is great but you're a lot more invested in it when you care for the people in the cockpits.

It allows for some shenanigans both in and out of the giant robot side of the quest, I feel.

I like having human interactions in stories that don't necessarily detract away from GIANT FIGHTING ROBOTS. But we do have to tone down the amount of sex/happyfuntime loving.

Because at the rate AC QUest is going, I can't stop thinking of it as a H-Doujin for Armored Core.

    HEY!
    Not ALL H-Doujins are bad.
    Just the vast majority.
RE-Take is awesome (admittedly there's an all-ages version of it that loses nothing by cutting out the fuck scenes, but still)

I like em, I'd say that Combat actually feels slower at times when we have to roll multiple times.

So mechanics wise it's a nice break of pace from the dice heavy combat, and it helps develop the team.

On a somewhat unrelated note, will we get forced "guest party member" Ravens for missions eventually?

TO BE FAIR, I fade to black for like 90% of it, and i don't MAKE you pick any of those options. Just because I'm not actively preventing you from fucking all the time doesn't mean you should take advantage and fuck like rabbits.

    >H-Doujin for Armored Core

I think I've seen one of those before.

Don't worry, Elsie will be kidnapped/killed soon enough, possibly brainwashed and forced to fight us.

    >Have god knows how powerful organization trying to kill you.
    >Get a girlfriend that you lovey-dovey with all your might.
