    PREVIOUSLY, ON METAHUMAN RENAISSANCE:
After eating, most of the group sets off to visit Jeanne in the hospital, while Dan goes with Johnny and Roxy to speak with Professor Blackstone. The conversation is brief, and not too enlightening, but fills Dan with resolve to do more research into the matter and better arm himself for the evening.

(Next post will be Research roll, so if you're adding something in, say it now.)

    (2x4, 2x9, 3x10 on Research)

You burn up maybe an hour doing an initial round of general research into summoning, building on what you know already about summoning spirits. After the first 15 minutes, Roxy and Johnny excuse themselves back to the workspace. Roxane says she wants to do the modular tool-mounts for the machine. You don't begrudge them. You are too busy doing research.

Looking into the "energy" requirements for rituals, you get a sense of how massive this is. Bringing the whole of an entity from one universe to another permanently is a dodgy prospect. Nobody has ever done it in recorded history. So you scale it down. Rituals summoning Outsiders for limited times, or in limited areas. Even then, such rituals are massive, as you have been told. Dozens or hundreds of cultists giving the ritual chant in unison, culminating in an animal or human sacrifice. But, even with the theorized reduction given by the black rock box, a single human sacrifice will not cut it. Reading some notes, you do realize that mages are considered more potent sacrifices, but even then, Anna would have to subdue someone of Blackstone's caliber, which you think is unlikely. Willing sacrifices are also more potent, but since Anna lacks any allies, she'd have to be the one to do it, and as you've been told and observed, she's not suicidal. This leaves more obscure options being the only ones open.

Wait, didn't she have a necromancer friend? Miles or something?

I doubt Miles the newbie necromancer is as powerful as Blackstone and is, therefore, a suitable willing sacrifice for a summoning of this level.

And when you say obscure, you mean obscure. She'd need some manner of potent object of power, a special magical spell, or some other special trigger. You read about cases of ritual mages connecting their spells to powerful natural forces, like thunderstorms, or earthquakes, or volcanic eruptions, but you don't think any of those will be coming along.

Anna must really have an ace in the hole to pull this off, none of the usual ways of circumventing the power issue seem available to her, given the relatively short time frame. You conclude the only way she could pull it off at all, even with some power source, would be to create an Avatar for the Red Star, to summon it in a body made on this plane, but filled with a significant portion of the mind and power of the Star. Even then, she'd still need the force to create it an Avatar.

    >What now?

Last you checked, Miles was indeed in prison, or at least, in the holding cells while he's charged and arraigned. Supposedly red was gonna bust him out, but he didn't kick you out of the dreamlands, so she probably hasn't.

Ashwood actually wanted you to talk to him, to see if he knew anything about other stuff Anna might have wanted with the museum. But you've been busy.

Yeah, she suggested a microfusion plant. She did say it would need a permit but there's probably a black market somewhere if it's that widespread. Do we know how wealthy Anna is, what kind of resources she has at her disposal? I imagine she hasn't been being randomly given thousands of dollars by the government.

Okay, so, some things to clear up. The energy here is generic, yes, but since this is a magical process, at some point, it must be magical energy. Natural forces have a lot of power tied up in them, which someone with some magical know-how could tap into.

Not so natural forces, like a nuclear reactor, or a nuclear warhead, would take some work to sync up with the ritual process. Also, y'know, you'd need to have it not explode and destroy your ritual site. If she could use nuclear power, I probably would have mentioned it. Dan did pretty well on his roll.

You take a break from your research, to check in with Ashwood. Maybe he knows some things about some items in the museum that might be useful.

It takes him a while, but he does pick up. "Hello, Fortesque?" He asks, and you reply in the affirmative. "Ah, was wondering if you'd call." He says. "Yeah, I just wanted to ask how your check of things in the museum was going." You reply. "Well, history isn't my normal area of expertise, but I can understand their records well enough. Sadly, I've spent most of my day coordinating with a handful of interns to try and track down all the inventory, checking and re-checking the items." "And? Any more objects missing?" You query. "Not as far as anyone can tell. Some things misplaced, some officially moved, but unofficially moved back, and so on..." He pauses for a second. "If been meaning to read some of the research notes on the items Professor Richards gave me, but haven't had much time. Have you had the opportunity to speak with Miles about anything else Anna might have been after?" "No," you reply. "I was just about to, but figured I'd call first and see if you knew anything I could use to maybe get more information out of him." "Sorry, no." Says Ashwood. "But do mention those items we checked out, maybe they'll jog his memory. Only think I've checked is the Minoan Objects. They have some historical significance, perhaps, but I doubt they have any direct connection or use to Anna."

You end the call, and get ready to head out to the police station. You pause for a second, not entirely sure you want to go alone... but you don't want to disturb any of the others while they work. Besides, more people is no guarantee of safety, as seen by earlier in the afternoon, so you decide to chance it, and go on your own. As you board the monorail, your watch reads 4:45.

Hmm. The only way she could know we're suddenly going to leave is if she has some kind of monitoring magic set up on campus, and that would be detected. She has better things to do than sit around by the gate waiting for us to leave. The journey there should be fairly safe. The police station is full of supercops who are much more experienced in combat than the evoker's club so that should be fine. The only problem is if Miles contacts her somehow to tell her we're out alone and then she ambushes us on the way back.
Solution: Stay there overnight. Not trying is the best form of failing, Dr. M steps in and saves the universe like she said she would but without any risk to our lives.

You get down to the central police station, and manage to get in the front door, past security, but then have a slight problem. Which is that random civilians normally don't get to talk to people in holding. So, you need to figure out how to get in to talk to Miles.

You decide your best bet is to see captain Skinner, so you head over to a duty desk, and ask the clerk if you can see the captain. You waste about five minutes talking back and forth with the rather terse looking clerk before she is convinced to allow you to speak with the Captain, and you're directed to her office, passing through the bullpen of detectives, before coming to knock on her door.

Another couple of minutes, and you've explained what's up, and what you plan is, as she stares levelly at you over her desk. "Short answer, no." You open your mouth to object, but she stops you with her steely gaze. "Long answer, I don't think I can do that, legally speaking." "What, I can't just visit him?" You ask. "Well, okay, technically, you can just talk to him. But I suspect his lawyer will mind. I mean, if somehow Miles gets away scott free, not likely mind, he could try and counter-sue you for assault, or something." "So let his lawyer supervise." You reply. "Well, then he wont say anything. It'd be admissible and all that." You sigh. "Look, can I try talking to him anyway?" She sighs, looks away for a second, then back at you. "Alright, I'll take you down to holding, and you can ask him questions. Try to impress on him this is all off the record, though. His lawyers'll flip otherwise."

The Captain walks you down to the holding cells, then past the regular ones (filled up with only a couple of guys, so a special holding area of hexagonal cells arranged in a kind of circle. There are only half a dozen, and you guess their for metahuman criminals. Or at least those capable of escaping conventional custody.

The captain takes you to one, opens the outer door, and steps inside, revealing a reinforced metal room with a divider made of some heavy transparent substance, probably bulletproof plastic, with air holes and such. A bespectacled officer, in a large coat and wearing black leather gloves with pentagrams embroidered on them. He's idly tapping his feet while listening to his iPod, and has his right hand placed on what looks like a handle raised out of the floor, with glowing green wires sticking from either end and running down to the floor. They connect to recessed engravings in the floor of runes, which are also glowing green. They run in two lines up to the cell area, then border it entirely, forming a circuit. On closer inspection, you think they are also protected by armored plastic.

The captain looks at the guy, and says to him, "Take a break Marv." He nods at her, and removes his hand from handle, at which point the runes cease to be lit up. Miles stirs on the cot in the room, and looks over at the door. The Captain gives you a neutral look, and says, "Visiting hours are over at 6." Then she too leaves the room.

As for the content we're pursuing, we're after literally anything and everything that he knows about Anna's plan. Nothing is too small or insignificant.

If he isn't forthcoming after a little while with those tactics, become overtly threatening. Make it abundantly clear that we're doing this for reasons much bigger than him and Dan, or even the whole city. Then start going 24 on his ass.

"The police have told me to tell you that this is entirely off the record. Which, I guess it is. I mean, I am a witness, and all, but I'm not here about that." You say. "You're here about Syrpent." He says. You wince. "Her name's Anna, Miles. Anna Ellsworth. And like you, she's made some bad decisions recently. Bargaining with the wrong forces. I just want to help her on the straight and narrow." You say. And imply that you'd also want to put Miles on that path. He looks worried at you. "Demons?" You shake your head. "Worse. Outsiders." Miles shivers. "I didn't know, man. My family are Necromancers. From the Old World, and all that. But I'm not very good at it. Not compared to my parents, or my siblings. And I'm the oldest, y'know?" You just nod as he talks. Keeping him going. "That shit with the dinosaur was gonna be me proving I was better than they thought." Classic villain motivation. Happens to a lot of powered young people who don't feel quite accepted by their family or peers.

He focuses back on you again. "She approached me when I came into town. I had some family contacts, and I was asking around for information on the staff. She said she'd help me get it if I caused a distraction so she could get that Black Rock Box. She said it was an important artifact for her god. I didn't ask questions." You nod, slowly. And, in away, the Box was. "Was their anything else at the museum she wanted explicitly?" You ask. He glowers at you. "Why should I say? Listen, she might still get me out of here if I don't turn on her."

"Well, seeing how she plans to fry the world like an egg inside of 8 hours, I don't think she's gonna spring you. Or rather, that you'll really get to appreciate your freedom.
Listen, I get wanting to prove to your family you're worthy. But Anna's gone beyond that. She owes this Outsider enough that she needs to give him the world. And I don't agree with that."

Also, can we get a look at how strong Miles is, with Magesight or something? Because I just had an awful thought.

"If she succeeds, this isn't going to be 'some people are going to get hurt' kind of thing. She's trying to bring an Avatar of the Red Star into being tonight. Do you understand what that means? You, me, this city, your family, this world, this entire galaxy is fucked. Any bargaining power that you think you have is just you not realizing exactly what's going to happen if you don't cooperate. Anna isn't your ally and she isn't going to help you."

    Charm if need be.

Clocks ticking, Miles. The world ends at midnight, if she succeeds. And if she doesn't, she's not going to bust you out.
First off, its unlikely she's going to bother getting you out now. She's probably busy setting up her ritual. And if she does, honestly, it'll probably be to use you as a human sacrifice to speed up the process a bit.

You pull you your phone, and check the time, surprised to find you get a signal. "Because Miles, the world will end in," you pause for effect, and a round minute to roll around. "seven hours, give minutes. Give or take." Miles rolls his eyes. "Oh, please! So Syrpent's gonna summon her big bad god to gobble up some sacrifices. People are going to die." He waves a hand at you dismissively. "People die all the time. Hell, more fuel for the fire, I say." His gaze gets a little distant, and slightly creepy. You suspect the time spent in basements studying necromancy for long periods has unhinged him a little. You decide to step up your game.

You reach out and tap your right hand against the copper handle sticking out of the floor twice. Green sparks shoot off of it with each tap, and the runes on the floor light up like you flicked a lightswitch on couple time. Miles twitches when you do this, as if someone had given him a static zap. "Earth to Miles." You say, sounding a little less friendly. "Anna isn't just going to summon her patron for a stroll in the park. She's going to conjure him as an avatar, and give him free run of the place." Miles blanches. Then he shakes his head. "Then I want to get on her bad side even less." "I don't think you understand. The Red Star doesn't want subjects. It wants biomass." You say, sharply.

Whats our starting value for this? Command?
If so, invoke our relationship with Nerio, and throw enough willpower to bring it up to full. This is important.

Dis gun be good. Because if he doesn't fold to the Charm, we're going to switch to command, whip out a psibolt, and lay down the law. "Anna will try to kill you if you oppose her. If you don't, though, she'll kill you anyway. I'm at least offering a decent shot at mercy. If you aren't going to help me, even at the cost of literally every single person on the planet, I'm taking your head off."

    (2x9 and 2x10 on Persuasion)

The silence in the room stretches for a time, and Miles looks at you square in the eyes. "My god, you're serious." You nod, solemnly. He looks at the ground and says, "Alright, I don't know if she was looking for something specific. She didn't mention it, but she seemed real cagey about discussing exactly what she was gonna do while me and my bodyguard were gonna run interference." You pull the notes Ashwood gave you at the museum from your bag of holding. "If I give you a list of some possibly significant items, could you tell me what they're most likely to be?" He nods, slowly. "I might. I'm no expert in artifacts...but."

You walk up to the cell, and slide aside a little slit so things can be passed into holding without needing to open the big door. Miles comes up to take the sheets of paper with his right hand, but with his left, he touches his left fingertips to the back of your hand. There is a tingling sensation, as your magical talents come into contact for a second, and you jerk your hand back in surprise. Miles takes the papers, and rubs his fingers together for a second, considering. "You've used the true magic. And relatively recently too. But it feels different. Yours is warm. Doesn't feel like you've been kissed by Death yet. Other talent too... and something... ancient. But just traces. You've touched some kind of magic I've never even heard of recently." He looks up at you, and nods. "You're a good soul. Better than me, I think. I can trust you to not fuck up the world, huh?" He pauses, then nods again slower, and quietly says to himself. "Yeah, you're the hero of this story. No wonder I lost."

Miles then goes back to the bench and reads through the papers. "Hrm, none of this looks very important. I'd check on the spell tablets, see what kind of magic they might empart. I'd also run a check on the Norse and Minoan items. They don't seem like much, but you never know." You nod. "The rest of it is over her head, I think. Except maybe this dragon statue. My family has one of them. Prehistoric German, carved from dragon bone, if its genuine. Dragons are powerful creatures. I doubt something made just some of their bone is very potent, but maybe she can use with something else, I dunno." You raise an eyebrow at him. "What? I can't necromancy something that isn't whole enough to have its original form."

"Tell me more about the statue." You say. He shrugs. "They're carved from dragon bone. Dragons are, or were a thing, at least in the past. Used to be pretty common in Germania and other areas, from what I hear." Thinking back on how Professor Blackstone said he'd once borrowed a certain legendary sword to save a maiden from a dragon, you don't doubt their continued existence. Miles continues, clueless to your inner musing. "Supposedly some of the old germanic tribes even worshiped them as gods." He looks at your print out again, and gestures to part of it, which you can't see. "Not sure what it means by 'grave marker', but I'd say it was probably made to honor one that died. Dragon bone is hard to carve, you know. The stuff is harder than steel, but lighter than most metals. Think you need more bone to carve it." "Could it be used as a vessel for something?" "Like what?" He gives you a confused look. "I dunno, stuff." You admit. He looks exaspirated for a second, then thinks about it. "If it was made for it, I guess. Probably wasn't though, of it it was, not to hold much of anything, else you or I would have felt it in the museum storage..." He trails off. He looks back at you. "But I'd check where it came from anyway." You nod at him, then walk up to the slit to take your notes back. "You've been pretty helpful, Miles." You say. "If I can put a good word in with the cops for you, I'll try, but if they call me to the stand in court, I'm not gonna lie for you, or anything." He nods slowly. "Well, that's pretty good considering the circumstances." Then he stands up and brings you the list.

You take the paper back, and slip it into your bag of holding. Then you stick a hand through the slot, for a shake. Miles seems surprised, but does. You then slide the slot closed. "Thanks, Miles. You've been a great help." You turn away, then dramatically turn your head back. "Y'know Miles," you pause and he looks back up at you. "You don't have to be one of the villains if you don't want." He gives a wan smile. "We''ll see, Dan. We'll see." You walk on out the room, sliding the armored outer door open, and find the officer from before standing just outside. You tip your hat to him, and to your surprise, he tips it back. You didn't notice it before, but he sets your spookysense on edge a little. Hedge wizard cop, perhaps? You gesture back inside, and say, "All yours, Marv." He nods, and goes back inside, putting the earbuds of his iPod back in.

As you exit the holding area, you pull out your phone and check the time, finding it not too long after five. Less than 7 hours before the world ends. Funny thought to have.

You're walking out into the main lobby, you keep your phone out, and consider calling Ashwood, and relaying the information to him. Or maybe checking up with Blackstone. Then you get a text, from Roxy's number. It says simply; "Where are you?" Right, you didn't tell anyone you left. You decide to call her back, talking will be more reassuring than text. It barely gets out half a ring before Roxane picks up. "Dan!? Where did you go? The club came back and their all looking for you." She sounds more annoyed than worried, to be honest. "Easy, easy." You say, placatingly. "I went to the police station. You guys were busy, so I didn't want to bother anyone by making them feel like they had to come with me." "Well, you could have left a message, or something." Roxane says, half-heartedly. What little rage she had is assuaged. "Listen, Dan, when you get back, the Evokers want to talk to you about something, apparently." "Oh?" You inquire. "Mhm. They wouldn't say, but they're acting a little different. Kind of... resigned? Like they want to tell you something they're not sure you want to hear." SRMD, right. Hyperintuitive as well as Hypercognitive. You sigh. "Well, can't blame them for whatever it is. This situation is tough on everyone." You and Roxy chat idly for a couple of seconds, before you hang up and arrive at the monorail station.

Time is running on. And the climax is approaching. 6:45 Hours Remaining.
