46 KB ARMORED CORE QUEST: THE DEATH OF HOPE AC-Guy 04/04/12(Wed)23:52 No.18579960
    >AC Quest is getting a bit of a late start today. Gotta eat dinner, will be back with the proper quest in 20-30 minutes probably.

    >Quick Recap for people new to the Quest....

You are ALEX RASTON. You are a Mech Pilot for the independent colony of HOPE, located in the northern part of what we know as the Mojave Desert.

Last night you got leave, visited family, bailed a friend out of trouble, and ended up making love to your long-time friend Elsie Winters under a beautiful starry sky. You woke to the smell of Smoke.

    Hope is Burning.

Come on, man, we don't have time for melodrama like that.

We need to see if we can jack a vehicle, because going through town on foot is going to be too slow.

And we need to make a decision: the base first, or Mom's house first?

You stand for a moment in shock, before returning to Elsie. She's started waking up and looks at you groggily.

    "Alex? What the fu-"

"We need to get dressed and move. Something's happened. I have no idea what, but it looks bad."

"Wait... shit. Where are my pants?"

"By the tree looks like." You start pulling your own on as you look around. Thinking fast, you pull out your comm-link. Civie coms are down, no suprise there. But so is the local tac-net.

    That should be impossible.

    "Shit. SHIT."

    "What?"

"It's an attack, has to be. All the coms are down."

"FUCK. Wait, all of them? What about that pirate frequency Mooch uses to sneak shit around?"

    "Didn't think to try it...."

Quickly, you com into 'Mooch Net', and put out an open signal.

    "Hey, anybody hear me?"

After a moment, you hear a voice come back. "Loud and clear." You hear Mooch's reassuringly calm voice over the com. God bless that crazy motherfucker. "Situation's bad as bad can be. We got baddies everywhere. Dave's already tagged a pair of them, looks like Black Rocks."

Your blood runs cold. That's one name that's caused you no little loss of sleep.

There's the bandits and slavers and worse running around in the dunes. There's the boogieman who haunt the nightmares of the world's scum.... then the Black Rocks that haunt theirs in turn.

"What the hell's going on down there?" Elsie hands you your shirt and coat as she keys into your conversation with Mooch.

"It's bad man, real bad. Turns out we had a couple traitors in our ranks. Killed most of our pilots while they were snoozing. They also jacked a couple of the Cores from the other line. We got ours still, thank god. Dave and I were in the hangers half lit when they came to jack them. We've got most the barracks under our control, little safe zone. Get your ass down here, we might be able to do something about these bastards."

    "What about Laurie?"

"Touched bases about ten minutes ago when the shit first hit the fan. Sheriff let him out of the brig when he found out how bad things were, he'll be here any minute."

The parking lot has a couple of cars and a bike. Enough to get you around quickly.

    You look at Elsie.

Mooch might not like it, but what if we used the pirate comm-net to contact the Sheriff and any other Militia members and Deputies, and get them to find civilians and escort them to the secured barracks, as well as coordinate against the Black Rocks.
It's not much, but with both the civilian comm-net and the Militia tac-net down, anything would be of help, and if we can organize Militia remnants, all the better.

If one of you guys runs into any more of us peacekeepers out there, we should be able to hook them up. Gotta be face to face first though."

Unless the town already has preexisting codes for telling people where to gather, places to avoid and so on any warnings and directions we give to civilians will just alert the Black Rocks as to where to go next. All we can really do is tell the militia to form up and protect civilians, and they really don't need us to do that.

You and Elsie manage to hotwire the short-bus in the lot, and tossed the bike in for her to work on on the way there. Soon you begin to see the first signs of devastation, though not much in the way of life or activity.

When you get to the bar, it's a different story. You find Laurie's brother just fine. It's rather shocking how similar they look, considering they hardly resemble each other. While Laurie's the sort of pretty boy you would almost expect to sparkle if he wasn't trying to hide it behind those fucking shades, his brother... His brother looks like he should be on an action movie poster, jumping out of an exploding helicopter to get into a knife-fight with Godzilla.

Some weird part of your brain wonders if this is where all the manly Laurie got cheated of went.

There's a tense moment where he points a shotgun in your face, and demands to know who you are. Once he recognizes you as his brother's friends, he relaxes a lot.

"If you wanna do something about those bastards, I'll try to help. But if you want my merchandise... I'd like a bit of a guarantee." He explains as he leads you inside. "It's not just me I'm worried about."

That's when you see that he's got about 30 people in his bar, most of them kids. Oldest about your sister's age. "When the shit hit the fan, they decided to huddle up with the meanest looking guy in the neighborhood. I can't leave unless it's safe for them, and I can't let you take the guns I need to secure this place unless I can go."

[ ] Take the bus, we'll call in an escort.
[ ] Take the bus, you take the kids and the merchandise to the barracks.
[ ] Colony's worth more than a couple of kids.
[ ] We'll go to the barracks together now.
[ ] We'll move out together as soon as I get my family back here.

We shouldn't start up an escort mission until we've got our entire squad ready.
If there's a smaller car we could hotwire, while leaving the bus for them when we're ready, that'd be even better.

No matter what we do, though, we should get Laurie's brother hooked into Mooch's pirate comm-net.

You get a hold of Mooch, and have the guy's smuggling coms hooked in with no real issues.

After a breif conversation between them, Mooch tells you that the bus is probably the best way to get the gear and the people out of there.

When asked about the possibility of an escort he says that he'll send Dave your way as soon as Laurie mounts up.

Then he says something a little surprising "If you're that worried about security, I can bring you your core. I can drop it at the bar, and if you're making a run home it could be ready to go when you get back. I mean, I won't be able to monitor EVERYTHING like I am now, but I'm not exactly able to give it my all at the moment anyway."

[ ] Go to your house with Elsie.
[ ] Go to your house with Laurie's brother.
[ ] Go to your house alone.
    [ ] Trust your family's secure.

    Also:

[ ] Take Mooch off overwatch, have him deliver your core.
[ ] Have him stay where he is, you'll hook up with your gear in the armory.

(the difference being choose a custom load-out vs getting into the fight quicker)

[Let's take a second to explain event dice are: It's like a luck roll. Rolling high in this case is a good thing.]

[Example: You are going into a bar and are asked to roll for event dice. Rolling particularly well might mean that the barkeep is a friend of a friend, and is a bit more accommodating than normal. A low roll might mean that a couple of thugs in a gang you angered happen to be drinking in this watering hole.]

[Personal choices will always have more of an impact, so the edge gained is a small one. But even a small edge can be deadly.]

You arrive to see the door off it's hinges. Fearing he worst, you rush inside the door, calling for them. In the kitchen you find them, Your mother, your sister, and the corpse of a Black Rock thug.

"A-Alex?" Your sister seems to be trying to keep from panicking, an maybe vomiting as well. Your mother's pale from shock.

You grab them both and pull them into an embrace, which they eagerly return. "What happened here?"

"We... we heard there was something going on, and then the coms were down. Then suddenly there was violence, and a woman started begging us to let her in... said they were right behind her. I opened the door, and saw him and one of his friends, and a guy wearing a uniform like yours. The guy in your uniform said something about making sure you were out of the 'game'. I think we as a group may be interpreting naming conventions more like fighter pilots than Ravens.

Anyway, it's not like AC canon doesn't have its share of dumb names. Remember the guy from AC2 whose call sign was just a string of ones, and whose AC was deliberately designed with parts shaped like long rectangles, and who equally deliberately stayed at 11th in the arena rankings despite being a strong contender for the top, all because he wanted to cram as many fucking ones into his identity as possible? I'm not sure if he was the silliest one in the game, either.

And don't even get me started on Apple Boy...

[Now I take a moment to explain how this is going to work.]

[There are three types of dice in this game: Event you already saw. The other two are 'action', and 'damage'. 'Damage' dice is self explanatory, and we'll get to that in a bit. 'Action' Dice are pretty much anything that involves an action you have to roll for, in and out of the Mech. System is pretty simple: it's a percentile roll-under. If you've played Dark Heresy, you know what I'm talking about.]

[Now combat's a little tricky. You have an initiative score, an everybody gets two initiative passes a round. you roll to see whos the fastest off the draw, but where it gets interesting is this: First pass is everybody going at the same time, second pass is everybody reacting to pass one, in order of fastest to slowest.]

[ So gimme a d100 roll. Gotta get under a 60 to beat this guy.]

A burst of fire from your machine gun follows up, raking across his legs as he tries to spin back out of the fire blind. this, combined with the now compromised sensor suite causes a massive flare in the leg thrusters, while he was still reeling from the head-shot.

You can, however, tell that this guy is not to be trifled with.

Is there anyone we have heard of then? It'd be good to know if there are any symbols we'd recognise right off aside from OOC knowledge.

What system are you using to run this quest?

At the moment? Not really. You know logos that're associated with certain mercenary groups and/or corporations.

Things like individual aces? Nah, you're kinda isolated from shit like that. You do know the big players in the general sense though.

    >>18583038
    >>18583032

You've still got your sword, and your beam-rifle. your entire left arm's assembly is in tiny little pieces though.

    >>18583043

Homebrew. Designed expressly FOR this quest. I'll be going into details as needed, leaving some shit undocumented for the sake of MYSTERY.

Plus I'm carving and mashing up bits of it constantly behind the scenes like a grotesque Frankenstein parody. I'm not sure I can even explain it coherently outside the little context windows.

Cool so when this is done d'you think you might have a usable system then?

I have not even the slightest fucking clue.

I'm kit-bashing something together for the sake of running this game, here and now.

If I can test it, and get somebody else to help me draw up all dem chart and stat all dem parts, I might have something worth sharing.

Seriously though, I think that I might actually beat out Soul Bro's Ops & Tactics for 'Most absurd number of charts'.

Now I need to get some sleep, because it's four motherfucking AM and I apparently value my Giant robot games over a healthy sleep schedule.

Shit, just realized I overlooked this.

Over-watch in this context is like tactical support.

Reviews terrain, does research, looks over targets, etc.

Like being the coach on a foot-ball team, or the manager to a rock-band. not out there in person, but critical to success.

hahaha, no they aren't. Equip weapons with range and a long distance FCS and they're as dead as the word "lock on" reads across your HUD. Agility is irrelevant if the enemy cant see you at range.

Can't remember much about AC because i only played silent line ... but weren't there some kind of lock on hammers and decoys ?
    >> Anonymous 04/05/12(Thu)11:00 No.18584114
    >>18583383
lock on jammers had a limited time duration, as did decoys. They didn't manipulate FCS in such a manner that you would lock on to the dummy/decoy itself. So, any pilot with decent aiming skills could guess the range of his weapons/decay rate of fire/etc. and lead the target into your fire.

AC-guy: I look forward to the next installment of this quest with great anticipation. I would've left some comments as the session was going on, but sadly I had class this morning.
