You are a recently knighted young man, Sir Kedrik Connington, formerly squired to a man known as Sir Orman the Quarrelsome. Hailing from the famous kingdom of chivalry, Arkhan, you were raised on the stories of Questing Knights. The battles they had won, the great achievements they had made, all had been chronicled in the Temple of Virtue. Made immortal in prose, held in awe by the common folk, good fortune has given you the opportunity to enter these same mythic ranks.

Your king, Balthazar, has called all the recently knighted young men to his kingdom. An annual tourney had been held, you acquitted yourself well, but now a more serious and prestigious honour was about to be bestowed on the assembly. The king had called a new season of Questing, the first in a generation. Reports of troubles from all over the world had been gathered, and the tasks of righting these wrongs has fallen into the hands of all good knights strong of arm and stalwart of spirit.

One task falls to you in particular. To the south lies the wilderness choked region known as the Lost Kingdoms. There a troll sat, fat in its swamp from preying on the surrounding peasant folk. You have been charged with bringing the king its smoking head.

Your horse is ready, your sword is sharp, and your heart burns with righteousness.

Ride out young paladin, and live out your boyhood dreams.

List Kedrik's equipment. If we're going to go fight a troll, it would be good to know if we need better goods or if we even have the funds to buy better goods.

You are currently in the Kingdom of Arkhan. Your Quest lies in the Southlands, past the Eldritch Forests and through the Petty Kingdoms, in the heart of the Troll Swamp.

You have: a full set of plate armour. Your father's sword. A trained warhorse. Trail rations to last a week. Ten gold pieces.

You have no lands, no retainers.

    Your renown is 0.
    >> OP-Questman 04/03/12(Tue)10:02 No.18559607
    >>18559561
Ten gold is nothing to sneer at, but its not going to get you anything better than what you already have. You could pick up something like a bow or lance, if you feel your sword isn't enough.

Your sword is a basic war-sword, a well maintained hand-and-a-halfer.

You can take it to the Temple of Chivalry and asked for it to be anointed by a priestess. Its common practice for a knight to request spiritual protection before embarking on a quest.

Sword at your hip and task in mind, you head to the Temple of Chivalry to ask for a blessing from one of the priestesses within.

The Fortress-City of King Balthazar is one of tight corridors for streets, choked with traffic and street side hawkers. With your armour as symbol of you station, you manage to negotiate the crowd with little trouble, but the crowd grows thicker around the temple itself, and your armour and horse no longer mark you as particularly unique. Knights with retainers in tow choke the steps, yelling out jests to old comrades spotted in the crowd or boasting of deeds done and those soon-to-be-done. A dozen colourful pinions strapped to his back make a peacock of one burly knight, while another wore jester garb over his plate. Strange arms sat at the hips of veterans, each one an individual with the personal tokens and trappings separating him from the knight to his side. The mundane garb of your fellow neophytes made a mark of their own.

At the top of the steps stood the priestesses, young women chosen for their beauty and virtue, sprinkling water from a bowl upon the kneeling warrior before them. Garlands sat on their heads, and their slim form was encased in white ceremonial robes hemmed with gold thread. Each seemed a queen as the assembled men swore to commit some victory to their name.

It took all day before you stood before a priestess. One of the most beautiful women you had ever seen, a tall woman of nubile form with a mane of black hair spilling down across her shoulders.

"In the name of the light, I am Esme, and I bless you with the water of god. Go forth young knight and may glory ride beside you." She flicked the water upon your brow and armour, and smiled.

Before you can get a word in reply another young knight, impatient from the long wait, shoulders past you and takes a knee. Smelling of perfumed water, you return down the steps to your waiting horse.

As you prepare to be on your way you spot a familiar face in the crowd. Once a squire like you, Blair of Godwin had recently been knighted as well. You had been rivals since your first meeting, in a battlefield out in the Petty Kingdoms. Blair claimed to hate you because you were of noble birth where he was common, that you had been guaranteed success where he had been forced to struggle for even the smallest of glory.

You hated him because he was a jerk who had killed an unarmed yeoman.

    He sees you and sneers.

"It seems we are on the same quest Kedrik!" he yelled across the temple square, "But the glory will be mine. Consider the troll already slain. Retire back to your father's acreage, before you bring shame upon his name."

The day is late, the sun is already sinking, and its many a week to the Troll Swamps. Smelling of perfumed water with Blair's insults ringing in your ears, you head out onto the road joining the evening traffic of farmers returning to their lands and merchants beginning their journey home.

so far in the heart of the kingdom, the trip is uneventful to say the least. Long used to hard journey, the peace of the road is like a bur beneath your saddle. Its only a week later that you find yourself in less reputable land.

The border marking the end of Arkhan and the beginning of the petty kingdoms was the broad water-horse road, a sweeping river that would swallow any man that dared to ford it, and the great stone bridge that stretched across it. Less a gate house and more a fortress manned the bridge, a first defence against any invaders. Archers manned the battlements, ready to bring death down upon those that would cross the bridge with evil intent.

By the bridge was a tavern with an accompanying wharf, house to many river-craft making their way along the trade routes and towns that called the water-horse home.

It was late in the day, the sun beginning to close down on the horizon. You could continue on into the uncertain countryside of the Petty Kingdoms, or take lodging for the night in the last friendly inn you are likely to see.

As you approach the inn a stable boy runs out to fetch your horse. He bows low as you hand him the reins, and leads it away with a practised hand.

Entering the inn you are greeted by the smoke of the tap room, thick clouds of tobacco accompanied by raucous laughter. The field hands were in for the evening, sharing stories and drinks around the fireside. They toast your entrance drunkenly, a friendly greeting to a newly arrived stranger.

A rose cheeked, red faced rake of a man stands laughing by a tapped barrel of wine, handing out drinks for the serving girls to carry. A fiddler had struck up a lively tune, and the serving girls seemed to dance to it as they manoeuvred the crowd. One danced up beside you, a slim figure in a loose fitting shift with dark red hair close cropped around her ears.

"Take your ease m'lord, and have a pint, t' innkeeper is celebrating his new born grandson," she bobbed her head in the direction of the red faced man.

Strangers beckon you to sit with them, offering pinches of tobacco and drinking horns both.

Stay and enjoy the celebration, or retreat to a room for rest.

You let the girl take you by the arm and lead you over to the crowded tables. "Cheers to Jill and Harry both, blessin' of god on their baby girl!" a bull-frog faced man roared, sloshing around a horn of wine. The blessing was greeted with cheers. The girl slipped you into a free seat and danced away with a hitch in her step.

"Welcome traveller," a thick necked field-hand said, slapping your shoulder, "You've come at a good time." He spoke around a thin cigarette, spitting clouds of bluish smoke with each breath. A companion of his looped an arm around his shoulder, pulled him from his chair. They laughed as they wrestled on the common room floor, with wagers soon flying between the spectators. None betted more than a couple of silver.

Soon the girl was back at your side, horn in either hand.

"Drink with me m'lord, t' the health of the new baby girl," she said, slipping onto your lap.

"I'll not have much, but one can't hurt," you reply, drinking from the horn.

When she offers to fetch more you stop her. "I'll need a clean head tomorrow. I'm heading south to slay a troll."

Heads were drawn at the mention of the beast. "True, m'lord must be brave," the girl cooed, her eyes wide with excitement, "I had heard a troll can kill a horse with one blow, and turn invisible besides."

You shrug. Many stories were told about what a troll could do. You would discover the truth in time.

"They say their breath can kill, like choking poison," a man said, blowing a smoke ring.

"A brave knight would be its match though," the girl insisted, "And m'lord is a brave knight!"

"A toast to the brave knight!" a roar went up and wine continued to flow.

Keeping your wits, you bid them a good night and make your way up to a free room. The serving girl comes along. "A brave knight needs someone to attend to him, don't he?" she asked, face flushed from the wine. She leans close to your side as you open the door. "Would you like me to attend to ye?"

You smile and reply, "Not today. I'd rather have that when I return, having slayed the troll. Thank you for the offer though."

She pouts, but the pout soon becomes a sly grin. Before you can get through the doorway she plants a kiss on your cheek.

"Yer a real knight, ye'll have no problem with that troll," she said before dancing away with a playful wave. You enter your room to find another fellow sleeping soundly in the other bed. Its often that strangers have to share a room on the road, and not the first time you had done so. Stripping down to your small clothes, you climb into the unoccupied bed and settle in for the night, your sword hanging from the bedpost for easy access.

Its not long before dawn arrives, and as your master had drilled into you, you rise with it. Pulling on your clothes and rebuckling your sword about your waist, you head down into the common room for breakfast.

The staff seems drawn out, but still cheerful. Many of the girls looked as if they hadn't slept. The red haired girl was, however, snoring loudly in the corner curled up by the fireplace, a drinking horn tucked under her arm.

A hefty woman saw you to a table. She had a thin smile but a hefty laugh. "Last night was a riot, you shouldn't have left so early. Poor Mara was heart-broken," she said, gently gesturing to the sleeping girl. "we've got bacon burned crisp with buttered bread and a cider to wash it down. That'll be three silver pennies," she took the coin and went on her way, quick to return with the meal.

Wolfing it down, you note the man who shared your room come stumbling down the stairs.

A tall man, broad shouldered and heavily muscled, he wore the garb of a forester. Blond hair stood in odd tufts on his head, the hair line severely receded. Despite that you'd count him as young enough to be contemporary, somewhere just shy of twenty.

He sat across from you and ordered the same. It occurred to you that you had little gift for tracking and hunting, and an experienced forester could come in handy further south. Perhaps this man was for hire?

"Say traveller, what bring you through this way?" you ask over the mug of cider.

He swallows his mouthful of bacon. "Work, there's rumour of a water-horse along the river drowning children. The petty king across the river has put up a bounty of thirty gold for its capture. The king on the other side has offered a knight-ship. Between the two I'm after the gold." He downed his cider in a single gulp. "You?"

"Hunting a troll," you say, toasting your fellow hunter.

"Tough one, trolls are smart. Remember to mask your scent before you go looking for it, the bastards have damn good noses. And don't trust your ears, they can mimic other creatures' sounds." He wiped the grease from his chin. "The name's Barton. Good luck on your hunting."

    "Likewise."

He stood, dusted the crumbs from his tunic, and headed out the inn. The girls called farewells after him, but he did not turn to accept them. Before long he was gone.

    > Do we know what a water horse is?

A water-horse is a mythological creature. Its a malevolent horse that lives in rivers and lakes, enticing people to try and ride it, but drowning them in the waters. You are familiar with them.

Before you can ask after him, he has already disappeared out the doorway.

You stalking across the common room and rouse Mara from her sleep. She blinks up at you with a tired smile. "G'morning m'lord," she said.

"Lady, I have a favour to ask of you.. They say a maiden's favour is as good as three strong lances in battle. Would you honour me with one bestowed by your hand."

Her brow wrinkles in confusion before widening with surprise. "Uh, um, of course m'lord!" she said, her face burning as red as her hair. She searched herself for something appropriate, running her hands through every pouch and pocket. "I don't know, I'm not a lady," she said, pulling out lint and copper pennies, "I've nothing worth giving, nothing like a 'favour'. Just old dish rags." She looked up at you with shame welling in her eyes. "I'm so sorry m'lord, I've nothing like that to give." She appears to be on the verge of crying as she fumbles uselessly with her belt.

    Smile and calm her down.

'Grant me a dish-rag, then, lady. If your well-wishes come with it, it is as good as gold-threaded silk.'

If she does give us a dish rag, I guess we could tie it to one of our weapons. Maybe the lance we're about to get.

A sob sounds from deep in her throat. She draws the dish-rag from her belt and hands it to you with trembling figures. Tears are spilling down her cheeks.

"You don't have ta mock me," she said between sobs. Brushing the tears from her eyes she made a tripping run out to the kitchen, choking back her sobs. You tie the rag around your wrist for now, planning to one day tie it about your lance. She thought it mockery but you had been sincere.

You take you leave of the inn and the stable boy takes little time in bringing out your horse. Mounting up you give the boy a nod, which he returns with a gap-toothed smile.

Riding out to the bridge the guards see you through with friendly waves. It feels good to be on the road again, the roar of the river beneath you and the wind whipping your hair.

It occurs to you that you might be in need of a lance. There is a town only some hours ride away, a village under the protection of King Dominic, a local petty king little better than a well armed bandit chief.

With that course in mind you ride through the day, the roads still well maintained even as you break from stone to hard packed dirt. The village appears some way ahead, a collection of thetch houses spread out around a single round tower. The tower was King Dominic's 'fortress', a poor sight compared to the mighty castles of Arkhan but one of the best to be found in the petty kingdoms.

A smith's hammer rang out over the bustle of the town. Children ran passed dirty and half naked, chasing a dog with a stick.

You dismount by the blacksmith. Its a far cry from the sort you are used to, it was opened up the elements and seemed more suited to nails and horse shoes than to equipping warriors for battle. A skinny man with a sour twist to his mouth worked bare chested over an anvil, hammering out a shoe. His back was covered in hairy welts and he stank of rancid milk.

He glared up at you from his work, a mouthful of twisted green teeth bared.

    "You want somethin'?" he asked.

"A lance," you reply. He burst out in laughter, a surprisingly sweet laugh for such a miserable looking man.

"I'll get ya one with t' cup of heaven beside. Just let me etch it out o' my vault!"

The Petty Kingdoms are well named. Each 'king' barely claims more than three or four villages, with barely a fortress to rule from. Most are pretty much robber barons, with dynasties that last about four seasons before they get knifed by their subordinates. Tregger is the most stable and one of the largest, with a king that has ruled for twenty years and a dynasty stretching back three generations.

Knowing where exactly Tregger is from your times as a squire, you mount up and be on your way, shoving the angry crowd from your mind. It would take a day to reach it, and the territory you would be crossing through is treacherous.

Barnsley is the next kingdom over, ruled by a vagabond from the north named Hogarth. The one after the was split between two men who had murdered their boss and were now fighting over his crown.

By sun down you are far from the nearest town, in a woodland known for hosting bandits. You can continue on in the night or make camp and wait for day break. Riding on through the night should bring you to Barnsley, but who knows what might be waiting in the dark.

Its too dark to ride safely through the woodland. Any large root or sudden hole could lead to a broken leg for your horse. You dismount and lead it by hand, carefully avoiding any trip-falls.

Its soon full dark, very dark indeed. The stars are hidden by the forest trees, and the sound of night life rings out. The yowl of a fox on the hunt, the shriek of an owl. By your judge it would be quieter if their were bandits about, but you are no woodsman.

Its a rough night of careful walking, paranoid glances and ears keen for the sound of approaching thieves. But despite your fears the night is uneventful, and though you continue on with sluggish steps soon the sun is breaking through the branches and the trees are beginning to clear.

You mount up and let your horse carry you out of the forest and into a road meadow. There is a farm house in the distance, and large brown cattle milling about.

You ignore the farm house and eventually continue on, finding a road that led up to a village much like the one you had visited yesterday. Barnsley was as mean as the last, with suspicious villagers watching you as you passed.

Bone tired with belly grumbling, you devour one of your rations. Dismounting you lead your horse over to water trough. Other horses were tethered before it, dressed in saddles clearly stolen.

It wasn't quite an inn or a tavern you stood before, but it was a larger house than the ones around it and the sound of merriment came from within. A weather beaten man leaned on the doorway smoking a long stemmed pipe.

He had a sword at his hip, jewels tucked into his belt, and a disreputable air about him.

You nod, and with a backward glance for your horse, enter the house.

Its obvious the men within are bandits. They threw gold back and forth with glee, coins and jewels both. None went without a scar on their face, most were missing a finger or two. One bushy bearded fellow had a snake carved into his cheek.

A battered young women with a clubbed foot limped between them, filling their bowls and drinking horns. Some casually slapped her arse, others were breasts. One pulled at her hair painfully, for no other reason than he could.

You pack up your possessions, stretch out and head down to the doorway. Picking your way over the noticeable blood stains, you come out into the clean night air.

Untying your horse, you mount up and ride on, keen to put as much distance between yourself and the town.

Despite the dark of night its an easy enough ride. The road, while not very well maintained, was none the less even and easy to ride. You pass a burned out wagon in the night, scattered parts of its former owners left for the crows. It might have been the work of the men you had killed, it might have been the work of another group. Either way it was several days old now, whoever had done it had done so a time ago.

The next kingdom over wasn't much any more. It had been ripped apart by a sudden civil war between the last king's captains. You rode through a burned out town, passed staked out bodies of men and women.

Inhuman butchery had been done here, and the wail of the night wind lent it a haunted air. Superstition had it that a land such as this left unattended by a priest gave birth to malevolent creatures, goblin-creatures that feasted on bones and drank human bile.

As you continue on your way you hear a terrible shriek in the night, the scream of a child soon followed by the barking snarl of a wolf.

There you fin a snarling wolf, mangy furred and mean eyed, squaring off against a young girl brandishing a tree branch. Her hair unbound and her clothes torn and dirty, the girl looked as wild and desperate as the wolf.

Every time it would snap at her the branch would come down on its muzzle. She had quick hands but the wolf was growing more desperate. It wouldn't be long before the branch failed as a deterrent.

It doesn't take you long to realise what it is, you had seen the result of a similar raid just the other night. Buildings put to the torch spat up thick black clouds while men hunted the streets, cutting down any that they came upon. At this distance they looked like ants making war, not the brutal massacre it must have been up close.

Tregger is still some distance. You unsling the axe and hand it up to her. Its is a bit heavy, but she shoulders it stubbornly and seems to enjoy the heft of it in her skinny arms.

You reach the town just before nightfall. It was walled, just as she claimed, a high wooden palisade that would give a small force pause. Possibly the most impressive battlement you had encountered in the Petty Kingdoms, and the men that manned it had an air of professionalism equally impressive. Spear and shield armed, wearing a uniform of brown and grey with a star badge over the heart.

Refugees were crowding the road, men and women fleeing the troubles next kingdom over, and they were all being inspected before being allowed through. A man-at-arms came up to you, a blank look on his face as he took your measure.

"In you get," he waved you through without asking a single question.

Tregger was busier than the other towns, larger too. It had a stone courtyard built around a large well. Women took their ease by it as they filled up water pots. People seemed happier here, less dirty. The children didn't look starved or run around half naked. The men seemed open and honest, if not overtly friendly.

Meagre wares by the standards of Arkhan, they had the boon of being plentiful and affordable. Fish and meats alongside carts of harvested vegetables, food enough to feed an army. Haggling was loud and lively.

And men-at-arms kept the peace. A fight was stopped before it really started by the spear butts of the men-at-arms. They dragged off the trouble makers to some unseen punishment.

You found the smithy by the tower wall. A man oversaw the forges, barrel chested and bald save for his fierce mutton chops. He saw you approach and raised a gloved hand in greeting.

Heh, and while you're at it we might as well cave Blair's head in as well? It's the middle of the swamp, no one will know...

but can we use a hammer well?

You haggle it down to ten gold pieces, which he begrudgingly accepts. He sends one of his apprentices to fetch the weapons, and he soon returns with both in hand. The long-handled hammer fits your tall frame and long arms well. The lance you sling into your saddle.

You pay the man his coin and asking him when he last saw Sir Blair.

"Around noon," he replies, pocketing the coin, "Said he would be in town for the night."

You know your way around a hammer. Its one of the chief martial weapons of a knight.
    >> Anonymous 04/03/12(Tue)16:56 No.18562794
oh, i guess we can get the lance later then.

alright, lets head out for the troll marsh area and get a head start on killing the troll

    Hmmmm.

Perhaps we should stay as well, then, and make sure to tail Blair to the troll's swamp.

It isn't exactly down the road. You still have some leagues to travel, all the way in the heart of the Lost Kingdoms.
    >> Anonymous 04/03/12(Tue)16:59 No.18562827
Well, maybe we should set off then and try and get it done quickly - that'd make sense...

Let's head for another town before resting. If we can get a headstart on, we can learn more and have the initiative.
    >> Anonymous 04/03/12(Tue)17:06 No.18562908
lets leave anyway and camp if we need to.
we'd probably run into Charlots uncle or our rival if we stayed.

    Yes lets get going.

Deciding not to waste your time with the comfort of civilization, you gather your new equipment and mount up behind Charlotte. You head out the southern most gate, your belly grumbling and eyes heavy, but heart high at the thought of the glory that awaits. The domain of Tregger lasts far longer than the other kingdoms, and even as nightfalls and sleep threatens to close in on you, it remains part of the seemingly only functional kingdom in the Petty Kingdoms.

Just off the roadside you set up camp, warm what is left of the sausage over the fire and gobbling it down before retiring for the night. Charlotte sleeps with the axe in hand, and you sleep close to her, back to back through the night.

When the sun rises you shake the girl awake and she stirs groggily. Unlike you she seems unused to a dawn start. You show her carefully how to tend a horse, checking the hooves and coat, feeding and drinking, taking her through your daily routine, the unconscious procedures drilled into you since you were younger than her, and explaining the whys of it all.

Soon enough you are both back up and on your way south. The next kingdom is a realm called Feron, and it sits by a magnificent lake that stretches across the horizon.

The town of Feron was part way station for travelling merchants, part trading hub. Lesser goods were sold on its streets, the grander goods destined for Arkhan up north. It was a gated community, its walls manned by bow armed mercenaries and its shore patrolled by boats.

Getting in was one thing, getting fare for the trip over was another entirely. Godseye Lake had a few treacherous elements only a captain familiar with its waters would know, and ships only departed at the earliest hours in pre-dawn light.

    That was half-a-day away.

Hmm, as for fare... we've only 2 gold pieces left, right? Is there any way to look for work?

Captains are always looking to hire on extra swords as protection against pirates. Godseye Lake is lousy with pirates.
    >> Anonymous 04/03/12(Tue)17:25 No.18563197
lets do a quick anti-pirate mission then

I think I'll wrap it up here. I'm tired and need sleep. I wanted to get to the troll before I went to bed, but I'm just too exhausted. Look for the next thread later tonight or tomorrow. Thanks for playing and I hope to see you all in the next thread.
