    Or, The Final Countdown

    PREVIOUSLY, ON METAHUMAN RENAISSANCE:
After receiving some exposition from Professor Blackstone, Dan's gang ordered Ninja Pizza and moved over to Jeanne's room, where Dan asked her some backstory questions. Then pizza was eaten, sleep was had, and Dan had weird vaguely foreshadowy dreams.

You wade your way back into consciousness, only dimly aware of your dream last night. While you feel moderately well rested, you're a little stiff, though that is to be expected since you slept on a couch. You can hear female voices talk in low tones somewhere nearby. You think it's Jeanne and Roxane having a conversation. You can also hear the clink of cups or plates occasionally, like a mug resting on a counter-top.

Then you smell it. Delicious french roast coffee. The desire for caffeine fills you down to your bones, your soul. You move the blanket aside and cross yourself and mutter, "Our blessed lady of caffeination, deliver us from weekday mornings." "Ah, you're awake." Says Roxane. "Good, now Jeanne and I don't have to flip for who has to poke you." You ignore her and sit up, putting your feet on the ground. "Less talky, more coffee." You look up and see Jeanne give Roxane a look, then roll her eyes, and pour you a cup, which she brings over to you, with necessary additives. "Clearly," You observe, smelling the coffee, "I have died and gone to heaven. And the angels at the pearly gates are serving coffee."

Give them a winning smile. They'll catch the stealth-compliment a split-second later and be slightly happier today for having been called angels. Anyway, stand up and stretch. Like, the full retinue of stretches, like we were getting ready to go free running. We don't know when the attack is going to happen, and we want to be limber for it. Also, let's call up Naomi and see if our helmet has been delivered yet. I doubt it, but, eh, couldn't hurt.

You grab your phone off the table, and sip your coffee, while you check for any new messages. First, you have a text from Professor Blackstone saying to call him on his cell phone if you need to talk, from about 30 minutes ago. There's another from Naomi from 6 AM (It now being 8 AM) about how no-one intruded last night, and that she'll hang around at the room until someone shows up to walk with her.

You check your e-mail, and find three, relatively important notes there. One, Regis Mortis, Exotiquarian, has sent you an email about his "End Of The World" sale, where he is offering 50% off on all items in stock. Then there's an email from Ashwood saying to call him at earliest convenience, and lastly there's an email from Captain Skinner's work email giving you a quick contact number, should you see anything that requires immediate police response.

    >>18529287

You finish the coffee, and then run through a basic, but comprehensive stretch routine, conjuring up memories from that Health class everyone was required to take way back when.

Does Regis list a website, or is he advertising a brick and mortar shop? Make a note of the location/url of whichever one it is. Bookmark if its a website. And lets write down his name for a possible connection to the red star, since he seems to be informed.
    After that, call Ashwood.

Regis' store is where Dan bought The Hammer, and his Cyrean knife and armor. He does have a website (linked in the email) but its more about the brick and mortar shop in Liberty City.

As for him being well informed, I mean, the man can do the shell game trick with cups and have power modules appear out of nowhere under one of them, so its not like he was exactly normal.

You update your contact list, making sure you properly label everything so VTOLs filled with angry super-SWAT guys don't accidentally get called in when you're trying to have a casual conversation. While doing so, you plan out your day. You'll head back to your room do find Naomi, get dressed and cleaned up there, go check on Johnny, and go for breakfast, maybe at IHOP again. After that, you can call Ashwood while you head over to Regis' shop.

You put your shoes on, and explain your plans to Jeanne and Roxy. Jeanne excuses herself to go get dressed then. Roxane nods. "I've heard of metascience or supertech stores before, but I didn't know we had a good one in the city." You shrug. "Regis seems like he caters to specific clientele. Also, I thought you didn't need special stores. Just get your mad science on and you can build whatever you want." Roxane folds her arms in faux-hurt. "Just because I can doesn't mean a girl doesn't like to save herself the trouble some times." "Speaking of mad science," You cut in, "Did you finish whatever you were building last night?" She nods, excitedly. "Yep!" She pulls the silver case up of the counter and opens it up, to reveal two black gloves, with an iridescent sheen. Silvery metal contact plates are on the knuckles, attached by flexible strands of metal to a similar plate on the palm.

You raise an eyebrow. "Are those what I think they are?" You ask. She's still grinning. "If you're thinking 'shock gloves', then yes. I was planning on making these for a while, but since my little stun-gun knuckles are a miss-matched pair now, I decided to finish these. Little pressure plate in the palm. Clench my fist, and POW! Should floor any human who isn't prepared for it. And since they're big scary gloves i need to wear, it meets the Open Carry qualification in Liberty City." You nod. She's also not mentioning the fact that she made them from arachnoweave fiber, meaning the gloves are also about as armored as a light kevlar vest.

Jeanne comes out of her room, dressed in an outfit you're not sure is very witchy. Tight jeans, combat boots, a tank-top for some french pop band you don't recognize, and some sunglasses. You're spooky sense tingles looking at some of her jewelry, however, as she has a couple of silver charm bracelets on, a ring with an interesting ram's head design on it. Her necklace also holds a couple charms, a Fleur-de-lis, a dragon and a silver wasp. He belt buckle is in the shape of a medieval kite shield with what you assume her family's coat of arms on it. She also has a short staff of wood in one hand, and you recognize a ritual kit bag slung over one shoulder. You and Roxane eye her up and down for a second. "What? It is like Professor Blackstone and your boy scouts say, be prepared."

She is, after all, a person who we would probably be interested in pursuing if we weren't currently working on starting a relationship with Roxy at the worst possible of times.

As you depart Jeanne's room, Roxy casually asks if you can stop by her room first, since her dorm is closer. You don't mind, so you wait in the lobby while she goes up to get dressed. She comes back down similarly attired to Jeanne, with a t-shirt, jeans, and good running shoes, and also has put back on her lab coat. Or has a new one. You're not sure. She's also wearing her shock gloves, and is wearing light tool belt. You also notice this lab coat move differently than it should. It seems to have several pouches sown shut in areas, which are slighly bulkier than normal. You wonder if this addition was standard, or Roxane's DIY.

You return to your own Dorm room, where you GET EVERYONE, only you have to wait for them all to show up. Also Jeanne reports Anya as dead asleep at this hour, so she might be a while. Johnny also appears to be asleep, you'll have to go up a floor and wake him. Later. For now, you need to get ready for your day. After some idle chat with Naomi about how the night was, you go into your own room, and shower. You put on a hardy set of jeans, your best running shoes, noting you need to finish your lace project ASAP, slap on your breastplate and a T-shirt over it, pull on a jacket reminisenct of Travis Touchdown, pull on your gloves and then put on your cracked sunglasses. Huh, wonder if Regis can replace those. Then you holster in your ghostknife, and sling your ritual kit. It's go time.

You exit your room, appropriately attired, find that nobody else has arrived yet, and plop down on your couch and fish out your shoelace project, and start working on it, you being about half way done with the second lace. Jeanne looks at you from where she's sitting on one of you kitchen stools, and asks "What's that?" "+2 Shoelaces of Feather Fall." You state, deadpan. She looks a little surprised for a second, then puts a finger on her chin. "Huh, never thought about that. That might come in handy, actually."

After a minute or so of work, you remember that you are really hungry. It's about 8:30. Johnny may sleep in for like another hour, so you should probably go bang on his door until he comes out, or call him and wake him up or something. After that, you can find see if Huan, Sunshine and Summanus have showed up, which is really who-all you're expecting. From there, breakfast. Somewhere. You consider hitting IHOP again.

While working, you look up at the three girls, and say "Anybody else hungry? I was gonna wait for everyone to get here, but I could use some breakfast." Roxane shrugs, which you guess is an affirmative. Jeanne cuts in with a "I could use something to eat, I suppose." Naomi just says, "Well, I have been awake for a couple hours..." Seems pretty decisive to you. "Okay then, let's go eat." You grab your phone and try calling Johnny, but get no answer. So you just go up a floor and pound on his door until he says "whaaaaaat..?" In a drowsy voice. "End of the world today, champ. Time to eat a good breakfast. Can't have you bogging this train down, or we'll have to cut you loose." "stop mixing metaphors this early in the day." Johnny shoots back, still sounding half-asleep.

A short while later, Johnny opens the door, fully dressed, with cane, hat, and his own red tinted glasses. Which he is glowering at you over. You ignore his ire entirely and ask, "How's the leg?" "Still a little stiff, but I can put my weight on it easier enough. You?" "Oh, I'm fine." "Dick!" he announces, casually, to the hall. Your little party then heads down to the lobby, where you run in Huan, who was just about to come up to see you.

Let's go somewhere reasonably close to Regis's, since we may as well turn this into an outing while we're at it. We'll take our shoelaces too, so that we have something to do with our hands while we walk. Pocket the laces for now, though, since we'll be talking to Ashwood for a bit, then getting to work and talking to everyone else after we're done talking with him. Also, let's see if Sunshine or Summanus want to tag along, since it seems like Anya's going to be hibernating like a healthy teenager for a few more hours.

But hey, you're going for pancakes, so who are you to judge. "Well, you said to call when it might be convenient." "Mm-hm. Just wanted to see if you'd had any new developments, and share some of my own." You relay anything new you have since you last saw Ashwood yesterday afternoon. "Interesting, interesting. Well, I wanted to speak with you, because I was thinking of heading back to the Museum, and checking out their collection again. They had some reference material to the Black Rock Box I don't need any more, but some of the other items may be useful. Anna actually seemed a bit angry at Miles for getting the situation escalated so quickly, maybe she had other things on her wishlist." You nod, and make an affirmative noise into the phone. "What, do you want me to help?" "Not necessarily, I know you probably have quite a bit to do today, but if you can stop by later in the day, I might have found something. I can't get on it right away, since I have to see my grandmother off, the help, and Her Majesty's Government are insisting she return home right away." "Okay, Ashwood. You'll call if you find something relevant, right?" "Certainly. And if you happen to talk to Miles or his accomplice in jail, and they give you any leads, please be sure to pass them on, would you old boy? Cheers." He ends the call.

"Yes. As I'm sure one of the others have told you, my mother was a huge hippie." "So, why don't you use a nickname, or an alias. Or have it changed, if you don't like it that much." Sunshine taps her chin with her fork. Then realizes what she's doing and wipes the smudge of syrup off with a napkin. "Well, a lot of people in school called me 'Sunny' for short. Mostly people use my name because I'm told it describes me very well." She smiles. "I always try and be cheery. Sometimes it makes those people around me who aren't so cheerful a little brighter. But the reason why I don't change my name is simple, Dan, you can only change who you are so much. At some point in your life, you need to come to terms with it. For me, that's accepting I have a terrible, if appropriate, hippie-child name." She pauses to eat some more breakfast, then continues. "Could be worse, anyway. They could use my middle name." "Which is?" Johnny inquires. "Phantasm." Says Sunshine, with a faux-mystical wave of her hands. You and several other people at the table narrowly avoid choking in shock. "Yeah, I was a natural birth at home, and I'm pretty sure my mother was high when she did the birth certificate the next day."

"Okay, since all of the members of this little group who can drink are here," You begin, after recovering, "After we go down to Regis' Royal Vault, since we're all apparently going, is there anything else any of use feel like we should or need to do today?" Roxane sticks up a hand, which is entirely unnecessary, since she's right next to you. You give her an affirmative nod, and she goes on, "Well, I need to head over to our little workspace and install the updates I did yesterday on my mousers. And since I doubt the police or campus security would like use tromping around the grounds, maybe Johnny should come with so he can be close to the Hammer." Johnny gives a whatever kind of gesture.

"Well, after we're done eating and shopping, it should be late enough that Anya should be up." Jeanne says. "And if she isn't maybe she should be, it being possibly her last day on Earth and all that. So maybe a couple of us could go around to her house and pick her up. But probably not all of us, don't want to scare her parents. They're relatively normal." You nod. Summanus speaks next. "Maybe we should see Professor Blackstone afterword, too. His is the faculty adviser for this club, and all." "Oh, that reminds me!" You say. "Blackstone sent me a text, saying to call his cellphone if we needed him. I think that means he'll be out of the office." Summanus and the others digest this information, along with some more of their breakfast, as the table lapses back into silence.

You finish your meal, and get up, everyone again chipping in for the bill. You realize you may need to stop by the bank some time, to recoup your petty cash. "Now, time to go to the coolest store in the city." Johnny offers you a fist bump. You return it, then show him the credit chip and double fist bump.

A short walk later, you're in front of the 'Royal Vault' store again. The windows are still blacked out, the only sign of being occupied the open sign on the door, and the hand-lettered sign saying 'Come and See' in one of the windows. This is also joined by an old fashioned wooden sign standing on the side-walk, also hand-lettered, which says 'End of the World Sale, 50% Off All Item!' with a little characature of Regis on the bottom. The paint looks like it might still be drying. Jeanne studies the store for a second when you first arrive. "Y'know, I think I've heard of this store before, like from Professor Blackstone." "Y'know, so have I..." Sunshine observes. "But I've never seen the store." Continues Jeanne. She then looks up and down the street. "In fact, I've been up and down this street recently shopping, and I do not remember the store." Johnny walks up to the door, and half turns to speak to the others. "Are you guys going in, or going to stand there and gawk all day?" He opens up the door, and gestures inside with his cane. "Ladies first." The ladies take him up on his kind offer, and then the rest of you go in. As you close the door, and your eyes adjust, you see Regis by the counter, as he greets you in his basso voice. "Hoho, welcome to the Royal Vault. I am Regis Mortis, your host for this fine morning." He smiles very white teeth against the dark color of his skin, and everyone but you and Johnny stares around the shop in wonder.

Let's be honest, we stare a little too. Anyway, first order of business, let's see if he has helmets. Any helmets, from jousting helms to Cyrean helmets to doughboy hats with kaiser spikes welded to the top. We need cranial protection. The end of the world is a good time to keep your head intact.

As some of you may recall from WAAAAAAAAAAAAY back when in Thread 2, Regis' shop is roughly divided into four quadrants, Mundane, Mystical, Anachronistic and Extraterrestrial, if you want to browse.

For something specific, or rather for a specific type of item (like a helmet) you could just ask him at the front desk.

We perform some sort of incantion/action, and then an effect is produced.
We've done evocation by saying things before, and I believe we did essentially the same with necromancy when we healed Johnny's leg, albeit with a cost.
How is that a ritual and not a spell?
    >>18531960
If we're browsing, we should go to extraterrestrial first, try and find some Cyrean equipment. Then check out mystical.
Suggest that Johnny go to mundane or anachronistic.

Because all of those effects are improvisational. We don't learn them, we do them on the fly. The only effects that we have that we can look up in a book are rituals.

I think he was referring to how your Necromancy or Evocation 'miracles' (That is your mechanical powers) don't require Dan to know "spells". You just say what you want to happen that falls within the miracle's allowance, and I fill in the bits in-between.

As the group disseminates into various sections of the store, connected to their respective disciplines. You decide to go browse the section relative to Extraterrestrial area. You spend a couple seconds admiring a display case of sets of Hiveling teeth, some Cyrean junk, mostly computational or data storage systems useless to most people, and some other stuff. Like a Grey anti-gravity frisbee, for lack of a better term. But you don't find much relative to what you're looking for. You waltz on over to the Mundane area, and browse around. Most of it is surplus stuff, like riot helmets, and one army kevlar helmet, though not from the US Army.

Not finding exactly what you want, to sidle on up to the front desk, and ask Regis, "Hey, I'm looking for some head-gear. Do you have anything Cyrean in stock?" Regis shakes his head. "Not in your size, my friend. I do have some interesting protectives, if you're interested. There is a new memory material hoodie I have. Give it a little shock and the flexible, comfortable material hardens like body armor." "Nah, sounds too hot." Regis nods. "Yes, it would be. It was designed in Canada." He says, by way of explanation.

Yeah, 4chan went down for a few hours there. If you're still around answering questions as per usual, I've got a few:

Does Regis happen have anything in stock that we saw our dream-selves wearing or wielding?
A mix and match of those three would be cool - if a helmet isn't available maybe an adventurer's fedora or a black pointy hat is. Or maybe a pointy leather hat, best of both worlds. If we absolutely gotta get some Cyrean armor right the fuck now, maybe we should try for the shoulder piece.

On the more magical side of things: Any staves? Bags o' holding? Magic earrings? Dan seems like the kinda trendy guy who could pull off a single earring.
    >> Omega !Q7t.srvWZ6 04/01/12(Sun)03:10 No.18533974
    >>18533499

Luckily, I've caught this just before I went to bed. So yes, I am still here to answer questions.

    >Does Regis happen have anything in stock that we saw our dream-selves wearing or wielding?

Well, other than some accessories, Regis doesn't do much for clothes. He does have hats though, in several varieties, including fedoras, and wizard hats. Also, because this is that kind of shop, Kevlar Fedoras (Good for LAR 1 for the head). Dan is already wearing a stylish jacket. And probably a cool T-shirt of some variety, but I'm too lazy to look up good ones, and nobody used that shirt-mockup link to make up any good ones, so it's Shrodinger's T-Shirt.

Now, Regis has made it clear he does have some Cyrean armor, like in the back somewhere, its just all, know, Cyrean sized. If you wanted to find the shoulder pauldron, you could probably ask. That might even be a freebie given that no-one else is going to take them anytime soon. Of course, it probably wont have any proper mechanical benefit, just be fluff. But having what is tantamount to a rank marker on one shoulder might be Dan's style.
    >> Omega !Q7t.srvWZ6 04/01/12(Sun)03:11 No.18533980
    >>18533974

    >On the more magical side of things: Any staves? Bags o' holding? Magic earrings? Dan seems like the kinda trendy guy who could pull off a single earring.

Let's see, Regis sells various comic book world items, so shit yeah he has staves. Anything from rods to the shorter number like Jeanne has, to big honking quarterstaff lengths made from a lightning struck tree. If you want Dan to pick up a staff as a magical focus, just describe it, and you can probably find something like it.

As for bags of holding, well, every wizard since the 70s has probably wanted to have a go at one of those, so sure. They probably come in different sizes and aperatures, like a tiny coin purse of holding for your change, your keys, your gum, your pens etc, and giant doctors bags or backpacks of holding that if you can spread them wide enough will hold a fridge or a couch. Depending on how much you're willing to pay and what all you want, I can probably build it as an external Miracle, with rules, and everything.

Much like with staves, Regis also probably has all kinds of tacky and genuine occult jewelry, like Jeanne's various accessories. Some are already enchanted, and some might be blank slates you can put an enchantment in if you want to. Since enchanting costs you willpower, I'll let you guys buy empty foci for 0 Wealth, but actually enchanted items will cost you. If you're looking for something specific, ask and I can decide (possibly randomly) if they have it, and if you guys just browse I can make a few up.
