    /tg/ Emergency!

Do you realize that it's the end of March and we haven't had a thread to celebrate this man's birthday? I don't know about you, but Mr. Rogers taught me everything I need to know about traditional gaming.

    >imagination is fun
    >it's okay to express feelings
    >working with others is important

So come on, /tg/, raise your glass and remember the most elegan/t g/entleman of all!

We never got him here in the UK (at least to my knowledge). Then, when I was feeling down about myself, I looked up some videos on youtube to see what was so fucking special about him.

It cheered me right up. A good man through and through.

I made a bard based on him. Absolutly no combat skills, only social skills and massive amounts of points talking related skills. Retired him after 2 sessions after I beat the boss of the current adventure after sitting him down and having a long chat with him about respecting other people's rights. Also taught the local goblins to knit.

    > Mister Rogers went onstage to accept the award — and there, in front of all the soap opera stars and talk show sinceratrons, in front of all the jutting man-tanned jaws and jutting saltwater bosoms, he made his small bow and said into the microphone, "All of us have special ones who have loved us into being. Would you just take, along with me, ten seconds to think of the people who have helped you become who you are. Ten seconds of silence."
And then he lifted his wrist, looked at the audience, looked at his watch, and said, "I'll watch the time." There was, at first, a small whoop from the crowd, a giddy, strangled hiccup of laughter, as people realized that he wasn't kidding, that Mister Rogers was not some convenient eunuch, but rather a man, an authority figure who actually expected them to do what he asked. And so they did. One second, two seconds, three seconds — and now the jaws clenched, and the bosoms heaved, and the mascara ran, and the tears fell upon the beglittered gathering like rain leaking down a crystal chandelier. And Mister Rogers finally looked up from his watch and said softly "May God be with you," to all his vanquished children.

That man was the best kind of Christian. I'm not religious, but if more people were like him I might have been.

"Agape" is the greek word that is translated as "love" in the gospels generally. It is not the same as filial piety (storge), or carnal attraction (eros), or even brotherly love between equals (philia). It is simply compassion for others, even if you don't LIKE them, you still desire the best for them and seek peace and forgiveness with them regardless.

Mr. Rogers' example is one of the best examples of that in the modern day and I wish more people followed that example.

Some rare men are exactly what they look like on the surface.

Fred Rogers was one of those men.

He was faithful and forthright in his belief, and never used it as a weapon against others. He disagreed vehemently with those who used the words of Christ as an excuse for hatred and lobbied despite his differences for tolerance in all aspects of life - race, sexuality, everything.

The man believed, really believed, in absolute forgiveness and love in a way very few are even capable of.

And all he ever wanted was to spread that belief.

Mr. Rogers was a great man. So many of his messages go unheeded these days; to share with others, to imagine and have fun, and to be a good neighbor.

It's nice to have these feelings of naive hope about the world again, as if I was a small child one more time.

Every now and then /tg/ needs a reminder that we're all just big softies at heart.

We want to see the good guys win and get the girl and ride off into the sunset and everything is great and everyone gets a happy ending.

We all want a better world. The problems come around when we inevitably disagree on how to accomplish that. But at the end of the day, Mr. Rogers reminds us that the fact that everyone WANTS that in the first place is a powerful thing in and of itself.

I just wish we still had Fred Rogers and Carl Sagan. I think things would be different now. If we had both of them, that is. Still up and about doing their mellow "isn't it just awesome being a person" thing... Both of them had just the most infectiously serene outlook, this knack for getting people to put aside their petty differences. Where they went, a microcosm of a Bill and Ted-esque utopia followed. We need more of that these days... we need more people that don't just live by "be excellent to each other" but get others to follow suit.

That actually doesn't sound bad at all. After the thirteen thousandth person who he had met briefly years ago, for scant seconds, asks if he remembers them, it's passed into the severely aggravating and irritating territory.

I wouldn't hold that against him, really. He's human, and he probably gets bombarded with things like that. And it takes a really special kind of person to just say "Yeah, I do!" every single one of the thousands of times that gets brought up, by anyone and anywhere.

The value of imagination that we exercise every day here on /tg/.

You must not have watched Mr Rogers growing up then. He taught the virtues of imagination, kindness, and level headedness to kids in a reassuring way; he showed the value of talking TO children instead of AT them. That being a kind, neighborly person was not always the easy thing to be, but we should try our very best to be one. In an industry dominated by soundbites and advertising he dared to take the time to communicate and teach. If that is nothing of value to you, then that's okay, but I hope you take a moment to sit back and reconsider. But just because something holds no value to you, doesn't mean that it doesn't hold immense value to others.

I watched Mr. Rogers's Neighborhood as a child. I'm not even sure why, since some part of my mind, in the very back, is asking me "Didn't you used to find this show kind of boring?" I don't remember when I stopped watching, nor what ultimately was the cause. These threads, in which we elegan/tg/entlemen reminisce about the virtues taught by Fred Rogers . . .

It reminds me of something. That my morality, my efforts to TRY and be a kind person to everybody, as kind as I can manage to be despite imperfections and failings in my attempt, is in many ways based on what this wonderful man taught me as a child. And now, as this thread makes me remember once again that this man, whose show I thought was boring as a child, is in fact the pillar on which I built a large facet of my own personality and morality today . . .

I'm crying, /tg/. I'm starting to have trouble typing, since I can't see my screen very well through the tears. Tears of joy and of guilt, because I'm happy to be reminded that I got to experience this man's teachings when I was younger, because I feel guilty that I once thought him boring yet based much of my morality on his words.

It's been a beautiful day, /tg/. And this thread made it even more beautiful than it was. Thank you.

No need to be so angry at us, neighbor.

Besides that, death is a natural thing. It makes us sad, yes, but there's nothing that can be done about it - the dead can't come back. It makes sense to mourn, we are humans after all and we do have feelings that we need to attend to.

But you can't delude yourself into believing the truth isn't the truth. You can't give the world your best if you aren't willing to accept the world for what it is - a beautiful place, albeit one with its dark spots. But you can't hate it for those dark spots, nor can you try to ignore those dark spots, as they make the world what it is and truly highlight the beauty.

And to cover your Good Lich Mr. Rogers . . . well, refer once again to my first note. Death is natural, and it shouldn't be fought. So why would anybody who subscribes to Mr. Rogers's views try to cheat death, even if there were a "good" ritual to do so with? Yes, you could pass on your message for eternity . . .

But if you did your job right, you wouldn't need to. Those you taught will pass it on for you. And those they teach will pass it on for them. And so on and so on, for the eternity you sought in lichdom. There will be those who seek to corrupt your words, twist them to their own ends . . .

But there will also be those who still remember your original message and its true meaning. And they'll seek to pass that on to the next generation . . .

A different person, but I don't really agree. Death only seems natural because we've had to deal with it for so long, but there's nothing morally wrong with avoiding death, especially if it also removes your need to absorb resources from the world. Lichdom would actually be a good step forward for those seeking true peace with the world as a whole.

Whether or not it's immaterial seclusion is irrelevant. The point is that people need to be helped on Earth, and that this is a higher priority than getting people into Heaven. If everyone goes to Heaven, the logical thing to do to make their lives the best possible is to kill them and get them there faster; if not everyone does, the logical thing to do is become an outright preacher and work on resetting their souls rather than mucking around with petty worldly affairs. Since he did neither of those things, clearly he felt that events in the material world were important enough that Heavenly affairs could be put on the back burner; logically extrapolating from this, he could very well choose undeath to keep on doing this.

Allow me to put it this way, good sirs.

Mr. Rogers, in DnD terms, was ultimately a Cleric. Not the "Grab a Mace and Bash some Face" sort that shot disco lasers out of his fingertips. The sort that, if Divine Magic were a thing, would be a walking Cure ____ Wounds Dispensary. Might drop Resurrections for people as well, though I doubt it since those can get expensive and he wouldn't be a man to set an arbitrary distinction between those who "deserve" a resurrection and those who "don't deserve" one, which is a distinction that would need to be set if he couldn't just cast them an unlimited number of times.

To him - to a Cleric - the ultimate honor is to sit in the realm of your God, to be told that you did good in your time on earth, is it not? Even allowing for a "Good Lich" ritual, Mr. Rogers would not, I believe, seek such an option. He did what good he could in the time that he had. He was a man. Nothing more. He taught lessons on how to be a better person, how to love yourself and love others, but he was a man.

Why should he, a man like any other, seek to grant himself an immortality on this world that not all have access to? He has his afterlife to look forward to. His time came, and there is a place waiting for him in the realm of his God. Who is he, a mere man, to deny the honor that his God has granted him?

Perhaps, depending on how you see it. I can certainly see your point (his religious views say that there is a place for him with God, and asks who he would be to deny that honor? A man who seeks to ensure others can continue into their place with God as well), but my opinion, clearly, differs.

Because the way I see it, becoming this Good Lich to continue trying to save mankind, turning himself into an immortal benefactor . . .

Isn't that, in some ways, akin to becoming a god himself? An immortal entity whose entire reason for existence is to better mankind? Sure, it would ultimately have the capacity to help so many more people, but it also sends a message I don't believe he would want to send. At least, I believe it would.

A message akin to "I don't trust that you will be able to do the best for yourselves. I don't trust those that I have taught to pass on my teachings properly."

I'm willing to admit, we all have our own, valid points. Your views are different from my own, but still very logical counterarguments against my own stance. But, obviously, I believe that my stance is also very valid, true, and logical, and that it serves as an adequate counterargument against YOUR views.

I once played a monk stylized after both Iroh from Avatar and Mr. Rogers.

He was the most fun character I ever played, and because of him I can't not be a LG character anymore.

To be honest... the message is good, but any message not from a firsthand source will be corrupted. It's inevitable. To remain on Earth wouldn't be showing distrust for humans, but simple acceptance of human nature and how the flow of information works.

But we could stop now, yes.

But isn't it also Mr. Roger's message that human nature can improve itself? And wouldn't he be showing faith in his own message by giving us the chance to prove it?

And I'm only not stopping because I see this as a discussion, not an argument where one of us has to be right.

That's something that requires far more than one person to accomplish. I have some doubts that basic facts about human minds can be really changed through talk. Heck, it's not even just a moral issue, it's also physiological issues with how much memory the brain can keep hold of.

I think the issue you have of it is that you're thinking like "If I was Mr. Rogers" or "If Mr. Rogers thinks anything like I do," but he doesn't. Based entirely off of what we know of the guy, I rather think my viewpoint is the one he'd more go for.

A monster. When mortals look upon me all they did was scream and reel in horror as I apporaoched them and those martially inclined would scrunch their faces and gnash their teeth as they reached for swords and spears to slay me.

I suppose it was their negativity that I fed upon. A strange torturous drug that, though detestable in it's taste was intoxicating. For many countless years I stalked the woods and the mountainside basking in the tales of horror told of me, that I would squeeze from my victims before I spun them into my webs to devour their flesh later as I savored their fear and hopelessness.

One day As I stalked the woods yet again for the bitter drug I so craved I came upon an a young man dressed in the robes of a ascetic. I took particular pleasure in these types as breaking their wills and their faith was, at the time, most pleasing drawing strength from it.

I knew the holy could be dangerous, for they wielded powers from the mantras they chanted and the deep meditations and prayers they undertook but the urge was insatiable. I lunged from my hiding place, fangs and claws bared on all my legs ready to grasp and rend the monk and add him to the many others who reside in my cave.

Little did I notice the look of absolute calm about him. The last I saw was his face turn to me and a flash of light that overwhelmed my vision. Some manner of holiness that he radiated I thought. The pain wasn't like that of being cut or stab but I felt even my monsterous body lurch and lose strength and before I knew it the monk stood over me, his hands clasped and head bowed in prayer. I knew my end was near..

"What are you waiting for?" I demanded. I would have expected a human to gloat over me before being slain, a fate I had since accepted but this was frustrating, "Stop chanting and be done with it! Is this not why you came to my forest?"

"No actually, I was simply passing through," He finally spoke up. He raised his head and more of his features came to me. He looked...Tired, the bright orange robes he wore suddenly were dulled and matted with dirt. His face was gaunt and even under the robes I could tell he was famished, but his discipline was sound and he ignored the pains and groans of his own body as was their way to ignore the worldliness they sought to leave behind.

"You see, I was banished from my temple." he continued, "Normally a creature such as yourself would be slain on the spot and no doubt you've earned your reputation...But I wanted to try something different."

At this point the force that held me in place had lifted. No doubt I could kill the monk. He was so close and so weak...And yet I could find no cause to raise my claws to him. Instead I righted myself and sat before him and continued to listen. For once the urge to kill did not compel me.

"What do you mean monk? What other way is their to deal with one another? I and my kind feast upon humans and you banish and destroy us. It is a wheel that turns without end for one thing always begets the other!" I berated, "Do you fancy yourself a god? And here I thought monks were taught to be humble."

    ...
    >> Anonymous 03/31/12(Sat)02:23 No.18523434
    >>18523386, continued

I waited for his reply sure enough that he could not rebuke me. I could see his strength fading as he knelt to sit on the damp grass before speaking.

" Your right and indeed we our taught many things," He continued, "I was taught that love for all things and the genuine want to see them to salvation were virtues of the enlightened. But how can I truly live by such a creed if I can only extend that kindness to humans and humans alone? I am indeed no god and I am far from achieving transcendence, but I figured at the moment I had the option to banish you that I could save you instead and show my brothers that mercy is for all beings."

I couldn't think of a reply. Did this monk presume that he could teach me as he could any lowly human? As much as I wanted to baulk I couldn't shake the idea. After all, when all your existance you've known only anger, hate, and fear the presence of one who felt concern for my well being was...Alien.

The monk soon slumped to the ground. He was exhausted and had no strength in him. How easy it would be to simply eat him here and now but...I do not rend him with my claws. Instead I picked him off the ground and carried him to a patch of trees easily tearing the limbs to form a bed of leaves to which I held together with my web.

After setting him down I found some fruit and laid it next to him before blending into the shadows knowing that my presence would keep the beasts and crawling things away from him. And in that time I all I could do was think.

    >Somebody says that people think themselves superior because of Mr. Rogers

Nay, we are not. That's the point. That's what he taught. That we're special, we're all special. Each individual is a cumulation of something that's essentially unique.

And the challenge is acknowledging and accepting that others are, too. Liking this doesn't make us superior, it just reminds us that there is a place where no one is hurting, and we just do as we will. That we should try our best to make what's around us to be like that.

Humor is our way of escaping hurt, for the most part. Unless you're a complete sociopath, it's true. A jew joke is hurtful, and personally I'm not a fan of them, but I get why 4chan makes them. It gives us a basis of understanding, we get to say, "We're not them, we're not this. We're the good guys." It's detrimental, but certainly not a genuine hate, for the most part.
But we can hope that remembering some good in our childhood will remind us to NOT do that. To help others, as they can help us, not to take others down to help ourselves.

And we'll forget. It happens. We can just hope to remember. So when we leave home and come back, maybe that day we'll help someone instead of hurting them. Maybe someone will help you, instead of hurting you.
Maybe that day will be special.

    Or maybe not.
Just do what makes you really happy.

In the interest of understanding and mutual enlightenment, I'd like to know where you saw us raising America up on a pedestal because of Mr. Rogers. If we did say such a thing, please point it out exactly, because in that case we made a grave mistake.

Mr. Rogers taught us that everyone can be---and IS---our neighbor, no matter how different they are. The simple fact that we are all fellow human beings makes us all equally special. In the face of this overwhelmingly true similarity we all share, any differences we might have dwindle in comparison. There is no difference we might have that can ever blot out this fact; no matters of race or religion or nationality that will ever have the power to make us anything other than what we really are...

    ...human.

And so, it is as a fellow human being that I extend my apologies for the wrongs that have been done to you.

Yes. Terrible things happen. They have in the past. They will in the future. They are happening now.

And you know what? They don't have to. Its a terrible thing, what was done to the Jews. But it resulted in much of the world vowing to never let such atrocities happen again. We may not fully succeed, but we will try. We will do our damn best to make sure that no one suffers as they did.

Mr. Rodgers was a man who believed that individuals were by nature good. That they wanted to help each other, love each other, care for each other. We choose to celebrate that belief.

To ignore what happened in history is foolish. But to let that wound fester? To let it forever hold you back? To have it taint everything?

    That is much worse.

So a good neighbor will tell that joke, and his neighbors will laugh? Like a good 9/11 joke or a dead marine joke? You seriously believe that there's no problem here that you need to face?

    Who laughed?
I'm all for occasional dark humor, but I'm seeing no mirth being taken in response to that post.

If you mean 4chan in general, you seem to be confusing a whole population with individuals. It's a problem, but it's not exactly one you can just throw a wrench at to tighten their sensitivity pipes.

Its a little thing called tact. That it was made in bad taste was understood.

People make mistakes. Neighbors, friends, people like Mr. Rodgers, forgive them.

We're all human. We can only try to do the best we can with what we have.

Well if any good has come of this thread it has reminded me that behind every Anonymous is a living breathing human being with hopes, dreams, fears, depression, wounds, and feelings just like me. I have resolved to try not to lose sight of that. I want to be more friendly to others. I want to be a good neighbor, even if it's only to /tg/. Together I believe that we can change our own little corner of the world for the better.

I believe the problem is that you can't separate the subject out. The joke is its own thing, spoken by whomever, and laughed at by whomever, treated however by whomever. It has absolutely no bearing on the subjects it utilizes, and can be the exact same joke with an entirely different wording and subject.

Another issue is that you are worried over the morals of the joke, which is a thing devoid of any morals. A "good" joke doesn't have to be morally acceptable by all, a joke is just something that someone finds amusing. Whether or not its appropriate is something that a person should take into account, but nobody is perfect. If it's done for the specific purpose to harm, that is one thing, but if it is fired away just for the purpose to amuse, that is something else. Both have the potential to hurt, but only one is being done intentionally. There you can find a problem people should face. But it's the second thing that happens more than anything else. And there the observer or listener has the option to simply avoid the joke and its potential to harm him or her, or approach the joke's deliverer.

My friend, I have the feeling that you are currently stewing over something or some things that have happened to you recently. You might have seen one more careless, hurtful internet comment than you could take, or you might have had a rough day and come to 4chan already angry. Whatever the reason, you're clearly angry.

    And that's perfectly alright.

The world isn't often a happy place these days. There is so much going on right now that fills us all with anger, or grief, or despair. And sometimes we need to let it out. Sometimes we need to spew out all the turbulent emotions inside us, to empty the reservoirs so that we can prepare for the world's onslaught tomorrow.

So I just want to let you know that, as a fellow human being, I understand. It's hard going through life with a smile on your face; sometimes you need that snarl, or that glare. All I would ask, however, is that once you feel better, you give it your best try to put that smile back on. It's alright if it takes awhile---take as much time as you need. Just don't forget to try.

There's too much turbulence in the world today...shouldn't we all do our best to spread some neighborly kindness?

Not the guy you're replying to, but I think his point was that joking about an incident that was horrible is different from joking that people are horrible.

I mean, I may be interpreting it wrong, but I figured most of the humor from jokes about horrible event is <because> it's taboo. You laugh because it's not supposed to be funny.

Why pick out specifically the jew jokes, which have majorly dropped in popularity? Why not the user of racial slurs, of misogyny, of the fact that we refer to each other as NECKBEARDS?

The expression of mutual hate is how we refer to each other here on these boards, for... whatever reason. The use of slurs is isolated to the shittiest of boards, too.

    >See you in the next "dwarves=jews" thread

I've... been trying to give the benefit of the doubt, but this just sounds like a transparent troll.

This just makes no sense. I have never seen a Dwarves=Jews thread. And even if that SOMEHOW happened, most of /tg/ thinks themselves AS DWARVES.

So, you're telling me, that /tg/ hates jews, and equates jews to a certain fantasy race, that they equate themselves to.
    So we're all sado-masochists?

No. I meant what I said. The fact that it continues to happen is a terrible thing. The fact that we let something that we have no control over keep us from acting now to prevent things we do?

    To me, that's infinitely worse.

/tg/ is an image board. On the internet. In 4chan. And we're trying our damndest to try to make the world a better place. It may be small, it may not mean much to anyone other than those here. But damn it, its something. And that alone makes it worth it.

Gentlemen, we know that we'll never wipe out negativity completely. Negative emotions will dog humanity for the rest of our days.

But goddamn if Mr. Rogers didn't set all human beings a task through the example of his words and actions: to make sure that the spread of unconditional goodwill and compassion throughout the world matches the spread of anger and hatred, blow for blow.

This is our task as human beings, regardless of nation or color or gender or creed or any of the myriad petty differences that divide us. To truly say we have lived a good life as a human being, this is what we must do.
