15 KB Primordial Evolution Game Indonesian Gentleman 03/27/12(Tue)21:38 No.18482230
Heya! Welcome again to yet another evolution game!

    previous threads:
    http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/18447772
    http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/18469745

    The rules are simple:
    1) evolve a creature by modifying their picture and giving a plausible reason.
    2) only a single modification/upgrade may be made per 'update'.
    3) you can choose different species to upgrade.
    4) I'll be plopping some events which you can adapt your creatures to, and decide if any updates are invalid.

In this thread, we shall see what happens when some creature from the mainland stumbles into an island archipelago.

Here are the ones from the mainland:

Here we have the rowgu, a descendant of frowgs which hitched a ride on poisonous floating plants, the frilla. They have electricity storing organs and the ability to hibernate during periods of few prey.

Next we have the stelvac, a stalck descendant which also hitched a ride on the floating frilla. They are a nocturnal predator, which can fly and hunt rowgu.

And here is the frilla, the slightly poisonous floating plant. It has developed a symbiotic relationship with the rowgu, and is tough enough to withstand long ocean voyages.

Next up, the indigenous island creatures!

The Adoni are insectlike creatures which can walk on water. They use their proboscis-like mouth to stab small worems and nibble on moss.

Here is an indigenous plantform from the island, the hrass. They tend to grow in a tight cluster of ten to twenty, and have tapped into the mineral-rich soil of the island enough that they developed semi-rigid leaves that is hard to eat.

Allright, get evolving! It should be fun to see purple vs blue.

I had an idea for Sprong Worems:
Developed on a primarily moss covered basalt column island the Sprongs acquired the ability to coil them selves like springs to jump from level to level.
After a hurricane carried off a population from the island the raft of vegetation landed on the island filled with Stelvac and Adoni's and what have you.
They spend most of their lives coiled up.

I think they cut hrass at night, pile them in some place that's gonna be in direct sunlight at day, and rest during the day. Then they come back in the evening and eat the sun-cooked hrass.

Which could attract lots of adoni during the day. Free food!

The rowgu's tongue extends in length (not shown) and develops strong elastic muscle tissues to be able to slurp at prey and deliver devestating electric charges before reeling it back in on its sticky surface. The adoni end up on the rowgu's menu.

On another note, the droppings of the rowgu deposit frilla tree seeds all across the island, promoting a terrestrial propagation of the plant species. The rowgu larvae sometimes also eat the larvae of kuckar, depositing their young into the water bowls and root pools of the frilla plants, allowing the kuckar to live off the scraps of the rowgu as sort of house keepers.

A strand of Kuckar become more tenacious in their early parasitism, gaining vicious hooks to latch onto the intestines of a host more effectively. These hooks serve later in life to attach the kuckar to a rock, making them difficult to remove by predators. A minor change in the pigment in its skin is caused by the rowgu interaction.

Easier access to large quantities of hrass has caused it to become a much more popular source of food for the Adoni.
The increased amount of hrass in their diet has allowed them to absorb some of the plant's distinctive pigments, turning them a similar shade of blue.

This has had the added benefit of making them much harder to detect among the hrass stalks.

The Rowgu's immune system slowly responds. kuckar who overstay their welcome in a rowgu's belly soon become slowly encased in digestive mucus secreted by the electric organs and directly distributed throughout the tract that entangles the kuckar and any other detris like dirt. The mucous is conductive, and bristles with static already surging throughout the rowgu's body that may cause kuckar to convulse loose and be flushed out.

The rowgus regularly feed on these interlopers whenever they prove too overbearing for their host trees. They developed immunity to the frilla's poison eons ago and find these plump blue bugs delectable.

As the frowg young become more and more distant from water sources, their gestation changes. They now hatch into fully developed miniature versions of their parents, only requiring contact with water to properly develop within the tree's chambers which already condenses in liberal amounts. Lookin' pretty phallic there.

The rowgus experience a minor evolutionary trait due to their home's taller nature. Their eight paws and the spaded end of their tails develop a series of hard ridges to better grip surfaces, such as the trunks and petal cups of their frillatrees. This sub-sequentially allows them to manipulate objects with their larger forepaws to a better degree and incorporate a new ritual in their mating habits involving suitors bringing back adornments to spouses, promoting not only tests of brawn, but of brilliance.

The rowgu responds appropriately. It develops orange bands all along its hide. It becomes roughly as toxic as the frilla host. Kuckar larvae that get ingested have a high likelyhood of dying upon trying to feed on it. Stelvacs may find them most unappetizing now.

The adoni's various offshoots are still preyed upon regularly.

By ingesting this acid, and spitting it out at an enemy, a new method of combat has been devised. It still burns their skin however.

Hi, slightly unrelated post here, but I've been working on my own spinoff of the Evolution games over the past few days. It's planned to be kind of like from Aether's games, with outside intervention from various entities. It will go the other direction from most of these which seem to try to avoid the more fantastical. Mine is planned to go further in the direction of the fantastic and have reasons and implication for the actions of higher beings, with the "playable" races merely being caught in their machinations. A sort of logical conclusion of from Aether's setting with gods, in other words.

That being said, I see that there is current this thread going on and another one taking place on the mainland of this continuity. There was also a polar setting a little while ago and I don't know if from Aether is planning another game of his own. Therefore I am hesitant whether to proceed with my own setting considering the prevalence of Evolution threads, not wanting to clutter the board up too much with more of what exists already.

What is your advice on this matter, if you don't mind my asking?

Primordial is taking a semi-realistic approach. We allow crazy shit to happen as long as something develops toward it. Just a few days ago the frowgs were deep sea abyssal paddle worems who feared predation from enormous bladeworems. Now they're near-psychic communal amphibious reptiles that live in toxic death trees, competing flying mantis shrimps and fending off hordes of adoni bugs.

Thanks for the encouragement. I think I'll start min in the downtime for Indonesian Gentleman's version that he mentioned in the other thread. Right now I'm mostly working on creating some quality art for it using only a mouse and Paint. With no tablets or auxiliaries whatsoever. It's not as difficult as it sounds, but then I'm kind of skilled as a drawfag if I may be permitted to say so myself.

My setting is actually sort of science fiction, but with the more advanced beings referring to themselves in somewhat religious terms. It's very soft science fiction though, and overlaps with fantasy. Think a cross between 40K and the Cthulhu Mythos with a chunk of the fantasy replaced by science fiction, and most of the grimdark replaced by a very slight feeling of nihilism, set against the wide-eyed curiosity and mystery of an as-yet-unexplored-by-the-player-races universe.

Okay, maybe that's a bit pretentious. I only hope I can make it a tenth as interesting as I imagined it when I get around to it. My setting will actually have a backstory and reasons for most of the events going on that's all been thought out beforehand, so that's something kind of unique along with some of the art I guess.

Have some preview art. I will now get back to actually contributing to this thread.

The world's atmosphere has been changing ((see >>18484092 )) Oxygen content has increased (roughly 45% compared to earths 21%), clouds are thicker and laden with luminescent spores adding a dim blue glow to the night sky. This has caused a low pressure zone to form over the island archipelago, there are daily tropical depressions (storms right before a hurricane). Expect heavy humidity, occasional flooding (sea species may find themselves stuck in a lake after a heavy flood), increased lightning strikes resulting in the occasional forest fire, and increased plant growth from the extra rain. The rain itself, at night has an off blue glow to it as well that fades after a few hours. it seems the luminescent spores cant survive in the environment yet.

This is gonna be the biggun...

Meet the Rowgu Rex. After an era of harsh weather, killer sea predators invading their wading pools, and their frilla homes expanding into near-omniaware lifeforms, the Rowgu population was nearly decimated by a third. Those who remain are the Rowgu Rex.

They grew only more cunning and hostile in approach for survival, their communal methods were not vanquished but super-accelerated as mates became colonies and colonies became families. Arrangements of 8-12 Rowgu Rexes roam the frilla forests, fighting predator and devouring prey.

Accelerated leaner limbs increased mobility in the canopies of their homes, powerful hind muscle allow them to leap great distances of up to 25-30 feet. Their bio-electric capabilities and advanced multi-spectral senses are sharp as ever. Their bones have begun the onset of developing a calcium structure, shedding the last few remnants of their slippery and wily amphibious ways. This grants the benefit of ample tooth structures, including a prominent set of canines peeking out of their mouths. These 2 to 3 foot toxic predators work within their family units to paralyze, immobilize, and kill prey with a combination of rudimentary ambush tactics and sheer bravery.

On the frog love update: The rowgu rexes treat courtship as meetings between family units during the mating season, presenting vibrant displays of color, sound, brawn, and gifting. There is no particular order and it seems to be up to the rowgu's own discretion on how it approaches. Failure to appease may lead to siblings and elder rowgu chasing or even killing suitors.

    Phew.

In response to the increase in Hrass, rudimentary trading routes, and more formal castes the Poisdoni have 3 distinct sup-groups.

The soldiers have grown hard shells, stronger forelegs, and manipulator claws. These are all to help them gather poisons and hunt for the smaller groups more effectively.

A small group of poisdoni have lost their normal eyes and have instead grown enormous third eyes. They are the seers between the giant frilla trees for their race. However, their loss of normal vision requires them to be with soldiers and gatherers.

Meanwhile the trailmakers have grown larger mandibles for gathering hrass and helping to tear apart kills.

These tiny caste workers have begun to offer hrass to the Stelvacs that dwell around their trees in an attempt to curry their favor.

The great firestorm that blotted the sun killed many rowgu, their bodies still vulnerable to the harness of radical weather despite all their evolutionary overtakings. Many members of the species fell into hibernation and died, others choked by the ash and cold.

But others began to adapt. The scarce hundred thousand of hundreds million that survived began to adapt, their pursuit for food, territory, and mates drove their bodies to the limit. No longer did they crawl on all eights, their postures craned upwards, to better suit their needs. Their bones hardened, to better weather the harsh millenniums to follow. Their blood boiled, and regulated its own body temperature and bolstered their muscles. And their minds pondered. The sparks of ingenuity continued to flicker like the bio-electric sparks they wielded with fervor against their foes.

The Frowmagnon croaks to the awaiting dawn.

(If this is getting ahead of myself I'm sorry, I was doodling this and I got excited by what turned out.)

    awesome.

Roll over to this thread to see the rules, look for my posted event. >>18484092

-The firestorm raked over the island, blasting the paradise with a storm of volcanic ash that shredded everything in its path. The oceans boiled and are now hotter then ever. life will be pushed to its limit to survive, most significantly of all, the island chains have been expanded by harsh lava flows and new volcanic islands to form a broken but viable land bridge to the mainland. It would take at least 10 generations of deliberate movement to reach the mainland. This development has gone unnoticed by the mainland population. ((if the threads start to die due to lack of people, or we get too advanced, there is your option for a merger))

evolve here, and enjoy, or cross to the mainland and fight for survival. if you are a plant, you may have evolved to ambulate there, otherwise, seeds clung onto/ pooped out of/ drifted/ floated there. when this thread auto sages it will be safe to assume enough time has progressed that species are all over the world and i will make a unified evolution thread once again if the Indonesian man doesn't have other plans.

While the Poisdoni were decimated in the firestorm the ones that managed to survive have found a lack of Frilla trees, and an ashen wasteland. Adapting to this the Poisdoni have adopted an ashen coloring.

They have also taken to following the flying Frilla over the land bridge. They may or may not make it over.

    >> Anonymous 03/29/12(Thu)13:13 No.18501911
With the slow loss of the Frilla trees on the archipelago the Poisdoni have taken to creating tall mounds to use as their base of operations. The poison sacks they have are slowly converting to a self secreted glue. The glue has yet to take full control of the population but with the loss of many frilla trees most of the poisdoni will be glue based soon.

The colonies of Adoni have become large and widespread with the mass migration of Frwogs mostly complete. The Adoni have become a large group of interconnected cities that depends on each other for island resources. Some cultivate Hrass while others still have poison producing frilla trees. The massive stacks are protected by Stelvacs who are fed by the adoni. In the post firestorm islands the Adoni have become the march of industry, though they have yet to really gain any true sentience.

They only do what they can to make each spire grow.
