You are Sonia Reynard, Corvette Pilot and Man at Arms for the House of Jarik-Dremine. You are currently... wait what the hell is going on?
Everything seems to be moving in slow motion. Your arms and legs are heavy, like you're moving underwater and making little progress. A few Marines are ahread of you running through the white pristine hallways that surround you. It isnt until you enter into a wide enclosed courtyard that things start to seem familiar. This is on a ship, somewhere you've been before, appartments make up the side walls and holographic statues and vendor stalls dot the open area.

As you follow the Marines bullets and energy beams fill the air forcing you and the others to take cover. One of the marines to your left is struck in the chest by a blue beam and his upper torso explodes. Limbs slowly drift away, spinning past as though they were in zero gee, distracting you from everything else.
"Stay away from the holographics!" Yells a familiar voice then you're engulfed in flames.

You snap awake at the beeping of your com going off.

It's 0700 Hours and you're on a transport shuttle up to one of the repair docks in orbit. Five hours of sleep isnt the greatest but its enough.

You recieved a call to head up to orbit early, something to do with equipment fitting for your ship. Chief Kavos is waiting for you as the other passengers exit into the waiting area.

"Welcome back to space Pilot." Kavos greets you warmly. "We've been busy. You?"
"Whenever I wasnt getting my ass nearly shot off or my face slapped by superiors, not really."
"Heh. You remember that ship you ordered the marines to board when we were clearing the way for that convoy?"
"Vaguely." you wince trying out one of the stim drinks available from a vending machine and finding it unpleasant. There's no expiry date listed on it you note. "The Cruiser we fought in our first engagement."

"Well that ship is here." The Chief stops you in front of a window facing a repair dock. Worker arms are everywhere, most moving metal plates or crates of cargo around and into the cruiser class ship.
"The salvage fleet recovered it and brought it here for repairs just before the battle started. If we hadnt crippled that super heavy when we did this station would have been lost. I think some of the engines and the FTL had already been repaired by that point so the Pirates might have tried to retake it."

"Here's your requisition options. Since you and and the guys put a salvage claim on that ship it'll only cost the resources put into repairing it so far. You should ask Alex and Mike to sign on that they're okay with you having it, they'll get some requisition in return."
Kavos points to what look to be weapon mounts on the ship.

"Not all of the weapons are replaced yet, you'll have some fitting options if you do decide to grab it. The engineers told me it should be ready for launch today so you'll need to make a decision soon. They'd like to know what weapons to put on it now so they can get it done before the squadron is scheduled to depart. The head engineer also wants to talk to you about the damage to the ship and the repairs they've done, so you might want to see him about that before you decide. You choice though."

Info on your pad show the ship has 6 empty weapon mounts, 2 of each size category.

    >What kind of cruiser is that thing, exactly
"It's an attack cruiser designed to be built dirt cheap for use by irregular forces. Most of the weapons are placed to fire in the forward arc of the ship to maximise the chances of something getting through the shields on a tougher opponent. The idea is to deal as much damage as possible using the superior engine power to get in close fast then escape quickly. Cheapest things the Terrans ever designed and the systems are compatible with most technologies.
Propblem is they made them so easy to build Pirates have always taken an intrest in them. They cant turn as hard as a corvette but it should keep up in straightline acceleration."

    >-See if we can contact Alex and Mike about the cruiser
You cant seem to raise Mike so you leave a message. Alex is unhappy to have been woken up.
"Please tell me the briefing hasnt been moved up. They said we didnt have to be there untill, what, 1100 hours?"
You ask if he's okay with you having the ship.
"I'm fine with it. Had some plans to upgrade the hell out of my corvette and I think Mike wanted an Attack Corvette."

Bummer, I had hoped it would be a proper cruiser and not one of those 1500RP rust buckets.

It doesn't seem like much of an improvment over our corvette. How much RP would we get if we didn't take the ship?

"Yeah I'd better talk to him first." you tell the Chief.

The head dock engineer is a burly Dro'all male, possibly the most muscular member of the species you've ever seen.
"You one of the ones that trashed this ship?" he asks.

    "Yeah that would be me."

"If you'd done any more damage it would have blown up. They these things can be tough bastards but they're not that tough. Overhauling it would have been a pain in the ass if it wasnt for the battle giving us plenty of scrap to work with. With the Weapons and engines it turned out easier just to rip them out so they can be worked on seperately. They'll have to be rebuilt which would have quadrupled the refit time. Instead we're slapped in some sublight drives of the same size and output that were recovered off of other ships. Wish I could talk to the asshole that designed this class, because who the hell thought it was a good idea to put so many engines on an attack cruiser?"

He points to a display showing readyness of all eight sublight drives. Manipulator arms are still installing one of the drives into the ship's main body, the rest are showing green.

"FTL systems were good for the most part, just needed some parts swapped out. It'll need a shakedown hop to be sure. Shields have been repaired, repulsor/tractor plates replaced where they needed it, inertial compensators needed tweaking, and the hull is patched. Theres some minor internal damage that still needs work but its not essential, it's just a bit of a safety hazard and looks ugly inside."

You hope that doesnt mean there will be a jagged piece of metal where the helm is.

"Good news; the 4 light phase cannon arrays on the wings and the bow torpedo launcher survived with only minor damage. The nav computer is also good, there's some techs from intel still striping the databanks and making sure they arent rigged to drop the ship into a star. You know minor stuff."

    >It doesn't seem like much of an improvment over our corvette. How much RP would we get if we didn't take the ship?

"You're kidding me right? If the House bought one newly built it would be worth about 10k in requisition. You'll likely get about four or five thousand for her in its current state I imagine. Those stupid Aries Attack Cruisers are only really worth 9k but only certain shipyards build them and they're a brand name."

The engineer points to what looks like a cargo door on the bow.
"The launch bay isnt huge by any margin but its bigger than what some Light Cruisers get. It can carry a maximum of 4 shuttles or 8 fighters."

It was captured, you (or more accurately your marines) cleared the ship of anything dangerous a salvage team might encounter. You then put a salvage claim on the ship giving you the option or aquiring it for the cost of the repairs thus far rather than the cost of the ship.
You'll have to requisition new weapons to replace those that have been removed.

Phase beam cannons AKA 'Beams' fire a two second sustained beam at a target. They have good range and are easy to maintain.

Pulse cannon are similar weapons but unleash their enegy in rapid pulses, the shock of which deals more damage for the same power output. They also have a higher rate of fire. On the downside they have a shorter range and are more expensive to maintain.

It can become more time consuming for your ships engineers. If ship damage is serious enough it may incur RP charges.

    >Can we take upgrades like the armor upgrade and the shields multiple times?
Yes to an extent but they will increase in RP cost.
Additional armor upgrades will effect the performance of a ship. Going for better quality armor (not available at this time) instead of more armor will require more time in dock.

    I say we take it.

How much should we pay Mike and Alex?

I am thinking 750 each... some extra for letting us have it. we could go with 500, but why should we.

this makes the total purchase cost at 3000c

with 2500c we can get some spinal mounts, armour and shields upgrades, more PD, and perhaps some more engine or power out the wazzoo to keep up with our corvette flight.

Another 1200 RP would get you above average quality shields. If your main shield fails a secondary less powerful shiled will buy time for it to recharge.

Fusion drive upgrades are currently greyed out and are not available in this system. They may be available in the Dreminth system when you get there.

You can take a maximum of 2 PD turrets on your ship total.

...but that doesnt mean you couldnt try for a more powerful point defense turret. The current standard one has 4 particle beams that fire in sequence. There is a slightly larger one with 8 particle beams that has a higher rate of fire but is twice as expensive. You wouldnt have a discount on any of these.

the going through shields is due to the fact that missiles and early terran impactors were able to do so.

If i remember your fluff right.

This means that the impactors were rendered obsolete by ship velocity that makes them in-aimable except perhaps with a shotgun configuration and even that at close range. A speciality weapon that armour most likely defends against, at least before impactors became totally history.

still the suggestion we use starfighters as delivery systems in capital ship hangars is uneconomic. a well guided missile could do the same.

although the idea of having a nuclear warhead on shuttles just in case the boarding does not go well does have merit.

But seriously, would upgrading the engines increase our menuverability, or just foward thrust? If it's just forward thrust, we might only want a couple, as having too many would turn us into a glorified lance, I'd want to focus on upgrading our maneuvering thrusters as that'd allow us to bring our main weapons to bear on other targets faster.

I say we get pulse everything, it sounds like one of our biggest advantages our of ship is speed, we should use that speed to close in to any enemy crafe, nail them with pulse weapons, and quicky retreat, taking beam PDT's means we'd likely be wasting their better range most of the time, and pulse PDT's would help us fend off attack better when we get into the thick of it.

We should either take a fast ship and use rapidfire weapons, or take a slower ship with more room and take longer range weaponry.

Yes, but our main weapons will have a shorter range then them, meaning we'll have to close in to be able to use them, nullifying our range on our PDT's.

Since our main weapons are shorter range, we'll have to get closer to the enemy, meaning we'll increase the chance of getting swarmed, which is where the Pulse Turrets come in handy.

And I refuse to see the point in weaking our main weapons loadout on an off chance while we *already have wingmen to do so for us*

We have wingmen, AND 4 beam turrets already installed to hold offf any enemy out of our range, since we're going to be trying to get into close range to use our spinal pulse cannon, we should be focusing on improving our preformance on what we'll be spending the majority of our time doing.

If we find enemies who fight out of our range (No gaurenees, btw), we can use our 4 beam turrets AND wingmen to hold them off, if we fight an enemy with longer range we close in, if we find ourselves outgunned, we disengange, and find a new target.

I find it more likely that we'll be swarmed by sheer numbers in close combat than being kited by longer ranged foes.

"This is our last deployment together everyone." Says Dayton to the assembled squadron. "It's just a short hop back to Dreminth. I'm sure nothing could *possibly* go wrong."

A few of the pilots grumble or mutter about him having jinxed them all.

"No I'm being serious, if anything goes wrong we shoot first and ask questions later."

"Once we've docked back home anyone that is going to should requisition a new ship immediately. There are other training squadrons that have been running around doing things in our three or four day absence so they may try and grab the new gear before you can.
When that's finished meet up at the briefing room at the base where some officers will be helping me get you all assigned properly. Once you recieve your assignment you may be asked to depart immediately so be sure your ship is ready first just in case."

He calls up an image on the main screen.
"Most of you have two or more options available to you; the Expeditionary force being rallied by the Dominion is made up of ships and crews from every House. Our House is looking for volunteers for our contribution.
While that's going on we do need people to stay at home, both in case rival Houses dont feel like honoring the current truce and to train new ship crews. I personally will be staying to get new squadrons ready.
Some of you, and you know who you are, have been offered positions outside of our House. You'll be able to contact those individuals from the terminals we'll have set up. Any questions? I wont have time for them when I start going through transfer paperwork later."

A Baron is the lowest political rank that is permitted to rule a House. Errant Knights... they're not really considered suited to rule a House but its not impossible."

"So we could return to our House someday if we wanted?" Asks Alex.

"Even if you could it might be a few years before they would let you go back I imagine. I dont know enough about them. Its why people are becoming nervous about units like these recruiting from still existing Houses."

Daton walks back to the podium and flips through some images before stopping on what looks like one of the super heavy cruisers you fought. It looks different though, parts of it have been built up with modular sections, some mounting turrets others docking station big enough for corvettes, frigates and even cruisers.
"The Major Houses will be deploying seven of these ships with the Expeditionary force for emergency repairs. The ruling House are deploying three rigged specifically for combat. Short answer is yes.

    >>18481385
You could still become a Knight of your current House while fighting with the expeditionary Force.

You tell Mike and Alex you want to talk with the unit the Knights Errant are with before you decide.

It's 1300 hours by the time you and the rest of the crew begin to transfer over to your 'new' cruiser. The exterior repairs are complete for the most part with the dock crews now moving the heavy pulse cannons into position.
"I sure hope they dont take too much longer." You say aloud.

As the engineer mentioned the interior hallways are in rough shape. Wall panels are missing in places to allow access to power conduits and other machinery, half of the lighting is missing and in some places there are gaps in the floor covered by armor plates acting as impromptu bridges.

"I've seen worse." Kavos says optimistically. "As long as the bridge and main engineering are in better shape we'll be fine."

The Bridge does seem to be in better shape. There are stations for six gunners around the perimeter and a panoramic monitor positioned around the helm much like on your corvette. Communications, ops and sensors are facing the rear. Most of the seating has leather padding except for the navigators seat which seems to have started its life as a wooden rocking chair.

"Bonus points for style." Says the Chief.

Linda is annoyed but says nothing, instead looking for something to use as padding.

Two hours of system checks later the dock crews give you the green light.

"Main systems are good. Your spinal mount weapons are on solid, they're not going anywhere. Just remember to take it easy for awhile." Their engineers warn you. "Nothing is going to break off but there could be minor electrical glitches. Your crew and the computer should be able to find and fix any problems fast, just go slow and steady on your way back to base."

While the checks were being finalised Linda has found some silver tape, spare padding and a crash restraint from somewhere else.
"I'm ready to go and the nav system seems in good shape. I'm a little nervous about trying out a whole new class of ship though."

Upon undocking the LT sends you the squadron rally point location out beyond the asteroid belt. Not everyone has made it there yet. Second flight has only just undocked and is headed their way.

High output means more power, even at the cost of reliability... DHI Engines sound like the way to go.

    >What's the pay.
"The pay is not be as extensive as Houses with dozens or hundreds of worlds could offer but your ships will eventually be owned by you outright as personal property. The Ruling House may on occasion grant Knights of our order land or other concessions. Even the Major Houses do this on occasion, often in the form of as bribes, though it is up to the individual weather they accept them. As I often say the real pay is the gift of battle and the fame a glory that go with it."

    >What are our chances for advancement
"Quite good, there are few to compete with and depending on what happens to the expeditionary fleet our order may expend."

    >What kind of service will be expected from us.

Mike arrives finally and you call him over.
"Took awhile to get that new ship with all of the trainees in the way." He tells you.

"Knight Koppel, this is Flight officer Mike Serth, he's the third pilot in our squad." Alex says.

"Ah yes, good to meet you. I take it all three of you wished to join?"
    "Yes sir." you answer.

The Knight looks off screen at something then turns back. "Uhm, your name isnt on our list."

"He should be on the squadron roster." you offer.

"Yes he is but he's not on our list of possible candidates. Tell me Mister Serth uh I dont know how best to put this but were you born middle class or lower class?"

Mike frowns and crosses his arms. "Lower class."

"I see. We have a strict advancement policy in line with many of the Major Houses. One advancement per generation. You Pilot Reynard are of Middle class birth and would be advancing to upper class by becoming a Knight. Mr Serth can only be advanced to middle class in his lifetime and our unit takes only those that would reach the rank of Knight."

What the crap? I say we find the Dominion's version of Cao Cao and join up with him then, I'd rather be working for someone who judges people based on talent an abiltiy rather than what class they were born into.

"I am sorry, not all of us agree with this rule but it not one that can be repealed.
Mr Serth can not become a Knight by promotion within our unit. That does not mean you wouldnt be able to achieve that goal within your own House. Many minor Houses are more lenient in that regard, but it would still take some extrordinary acts. You could still become an officer of good standing, there is nothing stoping you from that but that is not what our order is for. I'll give you all some time to make up your minds."

The screen goes dim with a flashing call icon.

    "Well now what?"

I missed the last few hours after we bought the engines because I had to get some much needed sleep. But I'd like to cast my vote for joining the expeditionary forces instead of the knights.

Leaving Mike behind isn't worth it. And it certainly isn't something I'd imagine Sonia would do.

I know quest characters need to be rather pliable but this simply doesn't add up with the way we played her in the last 12,13 threads?

I'd very much appreciate if we could have a vote on this again next thread.

I know there's no way to proove this, but I've been around this quest since thread 2 and there were times when it was basically OP, some other anon and me for the whole thread. Sometimes it even felt like it was only OP and me, like when we rescued that special ops cruiser.
And this is very much of a deal breaker for me.

If they're willing to recruit Mike as well I've got not problem with joining the knights.

If they're unwilling to bend the rules for our flight, then they can't be that interested in recruiting us in the first place.
I wouldn't want to fly for an organisation that's willing to squander talent for such stupid reasons anyway.
