Taking a few deep breaths, you force yourself to focus. There will be a reckoning with those smarmy, smooth-jimmied assholes you call crewmates. Soon you will repay them for every transgression, every bounce, every lie, every highly-fucking-unauthorized contact with your sister, including looking sideways at the discarded envelopes her letters came in, the horny sick twisted sister-hunting bastards.

But for now, something even more important is at stake - your reputation.

Sanya is crying openly, and still yelling at you in Russian.

"Uh... sorry, Sanya," you reply. "I heard you, I was just-"

"WHAT WERE YOU DOING!?" Sanya cries, clutching at her hair. "I- I thought you - he was gonna -"

"I flew too slow, and he stalled out~" you say confidently. After swallowing a few times to get the shakes out of your voice. "Yeah. Yeah. All according to plan."

"But it's really hard to fly that way," Ian pitches in, his tone anything but convincing.

"Totally," Sean adds. "So he had to focus. You know how pilots are, all sweaty and cross-eyed and grunting as they yank on their joysticks with both hands-"

"A-HA, YEAH, RIGHT, THANK YOU SANYA, we did good, fantastic," you manage to choke out. "So uh, we're all fine here. How are you?"

"... confused," Sanya breathes quietly, back to her normal demeanor.

"So where did that asshole come from, anyhow?" Sean asks. "They're like roaches, or the English, never just one of 'em."

"Aren't you from Toledo?" Ian asks dryly.

"Ach, fack ye and yar fachs, sohnny jeem!"

    "That's Scottish, dipshit."

"Ah, who gives a fuck," Sean says cordially. Boy, his mood sure improved.

You flash your nav lights three times, and Sanya flashes back with her flashlight to confirm the suggestion. Radio silence.

"Let's run quiet," you say. "You know how they are about sniffing radio signals."

"Almost supernatural," Sean agrees. "Lessee if I can sniff THEM."

A few minutes of circling and climbing later, Sean speaks into the intercom again. "If they're radiating, they're not doing it around here."

    >One day, high above Arizona , we were monitoring the radio traffic of all the mortal airplanes below us. First, a Cessna pilot asked the air traffic controllers to check his ground speed. ‘Ninety knots,’ ATC replied. A twin Bonanza soon made the same request. ‘One-twenty on the ground,’ was the reply. To our surprise, a navy F-18 came over the radio with a ground speed check. I knew exactly what he was doing. Of course, he had a ground speed indicator in his cockpit, but he wanted to let all the bug-smashers in the valley know what real speed was ‘Dusty 52, we show you at 620 on the ground,’ ATC responded. The situation was too ripe. I heard the click of Walter’s mike button in the rear seat. In his most innocent voice, Walter startled the controller by asking for a ground speed check from 81,000 feet, clearly above controlled airspace. In a cool, professional voice, the controller replied, ‘ Aspen 20, I show you at 1,982 knots on the ground.’ We did not hear another transmission on that frequency all the way to the coast.

You resolve on a visual search. Pushing your throttles hard, you wheel your heavy fighter through the moonlit night, pulling up on ten-thousand feet before you start flying a wide search pattern. Sanya falls in by your wing, her magical antenna absent as you both maintain total signals silence.

    Your persistence pays off.

"There," Ian says a half-hour later. "Above the channel... three o'clock."

You peer skyward, squint, and blink. Waggling your wings to get Sanya's attention, you point in the general direction of the contact, and waggle your fingers dramatically. She nods, and you see her face light up as the magical antenna glows into existence around her face.

We need to use sanya's launcher.

STRIKE WITCHES will be ending early tonight for various reasons, detailed below. STRIKE WITCHES: EAST ANGLIA IN DA MOONLIGHT will resume FRIDAY, standard time (7:00 EST, currently -4 GMT.)

Sorry for the slow, laid-back threads tonight, but my mind is utterly full of fuck. I powered through nosleep okay, but I got a $1,700 bill from school this weekend and my mechanic just told me my vehicle is such an old piece of shit its effectively totaled, it's just a question of when it falls apart. On minimum wage, I didn't need to hear this shit. Thus, not top form atm.

Anything past this point will exceed my prep/notes and be really, really lackluster shitty lolyoushootataliums, so I'm going to open the field to the other writefags writing for this setting a bit early tonight. By not running until FRIDAY , I'll be able to give us a classic lightspeed thread like we used to have. ALL CONTENT NO STOP.

    Be there.

    Or I'll find you.

SO. We actually now have time to begin planning combat operations and how to go about it.

    What say you, gentlemen?

    1) Break radio silence, call for every damn plane in the sector, and then some.
    2) Bounce the fuckers, then call for help
    3) Find some way to communicate silently with castle barin?
    4) Get sean to misdirect the armada.
    5) Others

You know, that eye has to be really disturbing for Mio.

When she takes off the patch, she sees through the skin and clothes, which means she sees a skull and spine and all the squishy bits, then a normal neck and torso, then the muscles and bones of the legs down to the striker, where she sees normal legs again.

    How horrifying.

We can't take them out on our own, not a shot, we need to buy as much time as possible to get people sortied.

So if we can communicate silently that's great, if we can't misdirect for as long as we can then fight a delaying action. Breaking radio silence is a big nono, if we can't communicate silently sent Sanya on home and tell her to go as fast as fucking possible and to beat Leigh-Mallory if he delays it or says anything about Big Wing.

“Why’d we have to get underway so damn early?” Wright quietly groused to one of his fellow platoon leaders as they sat in the briefing room.

“Because, Lieutenant,” Major Santiago replied from the blackboard he was writing things on. “We don’t know what kind of fifth column the Martians have, so it’s best to leave under the cover of darkness so as not to give them any opportunities to know our exact sailing schedule. And because you touch yourself at night.”

“Momma always said being an onanist would come back to haunt me.”

After waiting a few seconds to let the chuckles disperse, the Major resumes. “Alright, for those who are new or don’t pay attention to Kraut developments,” he spares a second to glare at one of the other platoon leaders, “the Bismarck just had a brand-new secondary battery fire director installed to replace the one the Squids slagged last month, so Admiral Lee wants a day of target practice before we actually go on patrol to work the kinks out.”

Wright raises his hand. “Does this include the AA gunners as well?”

Santiago nods. “Yes. I know that we’ve got some green AA gun crews onboard, your 1.1” mount included, so we got the RAF to send some target tugs to so we can let the AA crews get a work up, too.”

As he turns back to the blackboard he continues. “Alright, the destroyers are going to get first go at the Centurion, starting with the USS Pope at 1200…”

About twelve hours later, the guns of the California were roaring at the Centurion.

And Lt. Wright was retching into a bucket.

“First time on the North Sea, Ell-tee?” asked one of his gun’s gunlayers.

“I’m from Amarillo. This is the first time I’ve been to sea *period*,” Wright groans out.

After a few sympathetic “oohs” from his guncrew, one of the loaders perks up. “Looks like Bismarck is through with her turn with the target tugs. Better get up to the fire-director, Ell-tee. We’ve got it here.”

Hauling himself to his feet, Wright makes his way up a deck to his station, taking care so his bucket didn’t spill anywhere. Reaching the fire-director for his gun, he takes a deep breath, steels himself and plugs his headset into the ship’s gunnery control network.

An hour after that, Admiral Willis Lee was smiling.

“Alright, that’s enough for today. Hail the rest of the task force, and congratulate them on their shooting. Secure from battle stations, and make ready for sea,” he ordered as he walked out of the conning tower. After 5 minutes, control of the ship was passed up to the navigation bridge again, and Captain Bunkley, Lieutenant Mackintosh, and the quartermaster joined him outside.

“Flawless work on the conn, Mr. Mackintosh, as always. And flawless shiphandling, quartermaster. You’re released to get in line for chow first,” Lee said with a nod. The quartermaster saluted, and then jogged off to claim his rightful place.

As the three began to walk towards the companionway to the navigation bridge, Admiral Lee turns to the two following him. “Are you sure?”

“That’s what his transfer orders said, sir,” said Captain Bunkley as the group climbed the steps. “Highest possible marks in marksmanship, no matter the weapon. And today, he managed a flat 96% accuracy rate as a green commander with a green gun crew on an AA gun, while seasick,” The sounds of retching coming from ahead of them seemed to make the point.

Admiral Lee nods. “Indeed. And what about you, Lieutenant? You ran into him ashore, didn’t you?”

“Yes sir. I could feel it. It’s what made me stop wondering why a butterbar fresh out of OCS got assigned to a battleship,” Mackintosh replied.

Lee nods again. “Well then, it’s time we give him a proper introduction. My quarters, at 2000. Be there ten minutes beforehand, Mr. Mackintosh. I’ll send word down to the two in engineering. Good day, gentlemen.” And with that, the three go their separate ways.

“So, are you going to tell me why I’m being dragged before the Admiral?” demanded Wright. “I’ve been onboard this tub for just over a day! What the fuck could I have done that’s THAT bad?!”

The sailor leading him through the corridors of the ship keeps his head forward. “You’ll find out when you get there.”

Wright grunts, but doesn’t say anything in reply. The two of them make their way through the rest of the ship with little incident.

Eventually, they make their way to the Admiral’s Quarters, which already has two armed sailors posted outside of it. The one who fetched Wright opens the door for him and gestures for him to enter. Taking a breath, Wright does so. The sailor closes the door behind him with what seemed like a deafening thud.

Before Wright stood three men, who were flanking the seated figure of Admiral Lee. Two of them were Chief Warrant Officers, apparently from engineering, and the third was Lt. Mackintosh in his cyclopedian glory.

“Good evening, Lieutenant. I hope my summons wasn’t interrupting anything,” Admiral Lee said neutrally.

Lee chuckles. “Be at ease and speak freely, Mr. Wright. You have done nothing wrong. As you can see,” he says as he gestures to the men standing beside him, “this is hardly a Captain’s Mast.”

As he brings his hands together in front of him, he continues. “Let us get to business, then. Have you had the pleasure of meeting Lt. Adams yet, Mr. Wright?”

“Yes, sir. She, er, dropped in while I was ashore in Hull.”

“So, you’ve met our resident magic user. She should be the only one onboard, correct, Mr. Wright?”

“Uh, yes , sir,” Wright says , warily, “She’s the only witch we have assigned to us, as far as I know.”

“You are correct on that account, Mr. Wright. Now, what would you say if you were wrong about there being only one magic user onboard. That were a total of SIX of them onboard now, counting her. That there are such things as MALE magic users?”

“Permission to speak freely, sir?” Wright receives a nod from the admiral. “I’d say you were barking mad. Males can’t use magic; only witches can. Everyone knows that.”
    >> YOU ALL KNEW THIS WAS COMING Writefag no 2 03/27/12(Tue)00:00 No.18471782
At this, the four of them look between themselves for a second, and begin laughing hard.

“’Everyone knows that’, Lieutenant? Is that so? Well, your presiding officer and gunny at Quantico apparently didn’t,” the admiral said with a return to dead-seriousness. He pulls a folded envelope out of his jacket, and slides it forward on his desk. “Don’t believe me? Read for yourself.”

Wright snatches the letter and begins to read it furiously. It’s mainly regular paperwork bullshit, top shooting scores, yaddayaddayadda… until he reads the line underneath his former CO’s signature.

*POSSIBLE MALE MAGIC USER CANDICACY DISCOVERED IN INITIAL OCS CONFIRMED. SUSPECTED TYPE: MARKSMAN. USE HIM WELL.*

    GNOMES EVERYWHERE.

It seems that for all the witches' attempts to keep it quiet, male magic users have been forming their own secret organizations.

I can just imagine their surprise when the two groups meet.

“I can tell by the fact your face has turned white as a sheet you’ve reached the important bit.” Wright slowly looks up from the letter in shock. “I’m going to cut it to your straight. You didn’t think it was odd in the slightest that you managed to achieve a 96% accuracy rate with a green crew on an AA gun, while you were badly seasick? That you managed to do this on a new gun to you?”

“The principles are the sa-“ is all Wright can stammer out before Admiral Lee cuts him off. “Bullshit. The Quad 1.1 is a completely different animal than the 5 incher you trained on. And this is your first day at sea, yet you lead that gun like you had been on this ship since Pearl Harbor,” he says as he leans forward. “Look, Mr. Wright. Let’s not beat around the bush any more. You are a magic user.”

He smiles. “But don’t worry, you aren’t alone,” he indicates each man in turn. “Chief Warrant Officers Navarro and Arroyo. Both of the Engineering Department. They have an unnerving ability to have a piece of machinery do whatever they want it to. And Lt. Mackintosh, (you didn’t think it was odd that a mere Lieutenant was the navigator for a battleship?), well, Mr. Mackintosh can plot a 100% accurate fix at any time without needing to do any kind of work. And myself?” He shrugs. “I’m a Marksman like you. You’ll find quite it shocking how easily your skill with small arms translates to bigger weapons,” He says as he points to the 5 Olympic Gold Medals on display the bulkhead.
    >> Prune Barge Shuffle session #2 Writefag no 2 03/27/12(Tue)00:02 No.18471800
Wright is still too shocked to respond. Seeing this, the Admiral presses on. “I know this is a lot to take in. Normally, we groom candidates for years at Annapolis before we introduce them to the concept. However,” he says as he raises a finger, “New as you are to the all this, you must, and I mean *must* keep it secret. There are less than 15 people onboard this ship who know of the existence of male magic. The only ones who are important to you are Captain Bunkley and Major Santiago. Anyone else who Is not in this room at this moment is to be kept in the dark about this. Is that understood?”

Wright begins to nod his head, before he finds his voice. “…yessir… Yes, sir.”

Admiral Lee beams at him. “Excellent!” he says as he stands up. “Now that is concluded, how about we step into my wardroom for some ice cream? And I don’t mean the bulk stuff you get in the mess, I mean high-quality gelato.”

    “That…sounds delicious, sir.”

“Exquisite! Welcome to the Brotherhood, Marine.”

Because she is ridiculously underage-banned. It is already hard enough to justify why a 20 something male is sprinting through a battlefield with a gun and a obviously under 18 girl tucked under his arm. Especially when said girl is screaming bloody murder and wearing no pants. Adding panty shots is where I draw the line on that one. You want pantsu, you are going to have vote for legal tender. Well, consider these two points:

    1. Sailors are already superstitious to a large extent.
    2. When you're cooped up on a ship for months at a time, you start to notice your shipmates doing things that people say are "mythical", and clearly aren't.

As an aside, Annapolis was founded with the secret secondary objective of finding and preparing gnomes for the Navy and Marine officer corps. You determine what kind of a gnome a man is, subtly push him into a career that would compliment it, and then tell him about his magic when he reports to his posting.

We're certainly getting further along with something with Minna, but it's not clear that's it's anything romantic. We could end up with mutual respect and admiration, etc. And really, if we fail to get Robin shipped back home, she's going to need a CO we can trust, and that's gonna take some work if it's Minna.

It should be pointed out, thought, that the Navy's cabal is fleet-wide. While each ship might have it's own secret cadre of Gnomes, the captain of each ship and the admirals that actually command fleets know about the gnomes under their command.

It might also fall into a sort of Uncanny Valley of magic.

Witch magic is very, very obviously impossible for humans to do. It doesn't matter how skilled or lucky or fit you are; a normal person will never be able to make energy shields, or fly, or see through walls, or any of that other sparkly bullshit.

But gnome magics are things that are technically possible for normal humans, just so incredibly unlikely that they might as well be impossible. Failing that, they're things that still use ordinary human parts (jumping with legs as opposed to flying, punching through steel as opposed to energy beams, etc.) to do their work. So the human mind, when confronted with something it can't understand, tries to rationalize it away, to fit it into the normal paradigm. Witch magic can't be seen as anything other than what it is. But gnome magic is just close enough to how the world normally works that unless you're actively looking for it, your mind finds an explanation that doesn't bend physics over a table.

I figure we get one good bounce in, she unloads all her ordnance and makes for home while we go active on the radar and draw as many escorts as possible away from the transports while she gets us some help.

Plus we can give her instructions to find Chuck and tie Mallory up in a basement somewhere before he can fuck everything up.

Stuff like swinging tree trunks and all isn't really open to too many interpretations, and since the witches aren't open about their suppressing male magic, people would have no reason not to attribute it to magic; it's the easiest explanation. They might be under pressure from the higher ups not to talk about it much, but most people are going to see that for what it is.

That said, in most cases where it's just clocks syncing up you're probably right.

So basically, there was never any grand conspiracy, because there was never any need for it. Any cases where even ordinary people could figure out that a dude was using magic would be incredibly rare; pretty much a witchy sort of transsexuality where a dude just happens to be born with witchy magic genes. The reverse (girl born with male magic genes) is probably how anybody found out about male magic in the first place; that girl was trained by witches and then they noticed a whole bunch of dudes with abilities similar to that girl's.

PF confirmed that there was a conspiracy, but that it just boiled down to the witches not telling men about magic, and exerting their political influence to deal with any problem people. He didn't get into what exactly "dealing with" amounted too, and either way it was probably glossed over in whatever training the younger witches get.

Imagine how easy this war would be if men knew about their talents.

You'd have witches flying around doing what they do, and you'd have perfect marksmen dropping aliums by the truckload, with genius generals leading and nigh-omniscient radar men locating the enemy.

That might be the witches' line, but there's no reason for normal people to think that. In public, witches just say that men don't have magic; they wouldn't want to point out the fact that male magic might threaten their social status. This stuff would have been happening for centuries, and (PF may have confirmed this during the info dump, I don't remember) most locales with a gnome are probably fully accepting of male magic as a fact.

Okay, so I got an idea in the shower for how we can repay Lynette. Bear with me on this one, for I have also combined it with trolling most of the Witches.

So we find out some piece of music she'd really like to hear. We can deploy Miyafuji for this. At some point we need to go to the mainland, justify it however we need. While there we pick up a record player and a record of said piece of music. Those of you familiar with Shawshank Redemption may have an idea as to where this is going.

So once we get back, get the Widow covered by a tarp or something. After that, we hijack whichever room grants us control of the intercom, music in tow. We get on the horn, make a quick remark, and then we play the song for Lynette. Finish it up with thanking her for painting the most beautiful woman on the island onto our plane and book it to the hangar. Hopefully, curiosity draws a crowd. Unveil at opportune moment.

What? We don't know how we feel now. Our last outburst with her was us saying she's a crazy bitch.

    >it's still unclear if Trude veiws us as anything more a quick distration
    Not according to Erica.

Or, Ask Patton/Rommel for a favor - have one of them appoint Robin as Minna's aide/adjutant. She can't exactly argue with that if it's an appointment from high up enough.

Plus, if they keep it discreet, it hides the most obvious evidence of Brotherly meddling from them.

And more importantly, are we sure we want her anywhere near Minna? Maybe we could have her placed under Kathy as a naval spotter. Not sure if they still use them like that, but it might involve less direct combat.

She know we like her, but are a bit put off by her issues. She said she hated us, we said she was a crazy bitch. If she has any people smarts, she'll be able to figure out neither of us really meant what we said.

Trude always had small crush on us. It's still up in the air if those feeling won't be crushed under her desire to find a distraction from her life.

*We* don't know that we like her, you idiot. As in, the readers haven't come to a consensus on that yet, and despite PF pushing us that way he hasn't railroaded us that hard before, and hopefully won't here.

As for Trude, it would seem like her wanting a distraction would increase, rather than detract from, her feelings toward us. Though here as well, there's been no decision as to how we feel about her.

Seems likely. She was able to know we were coming up behind her, and figure out the best time to make up with us.

Nothing she's done with it couldn't have been figured out with a little thought, and I'm not suggesting asking her, obviously. Just mention it in passing to one of the younger witches and see how they react.
Besides, our relationship with her (whatever the fuck it amounts to) is practically founded on strain.

I have yet to see planefag railroad us in that direction. Sometimes he has us spend time with Minna, sometimes he has us spend time with Trude. Dosen't mean he's railroading us.

Wanting to have sex with someone dosn't mean you love them. If you want something real, she needs to see us as something other than a fuckbuddy. I'm not really sure we want her to be more than that.

Fine, but like I said, it dosn't really matter. It's no threat to us, and while it would be strange if she lied about it, it not exactly an unforgivable act if she did. Overall, I say we take her at her word. The other witches might not know anyhing about it anyways.

Oh my head. I'm not angry about it, I'm just curious. It would be nice to know one way or the other; we are supposed to be working as a team here, and that requires a certain degree of candor about each others' abilities. We don't need to take her at her word, especially since she might be trolling us. There's no reason not to ask someone else; we don't stand to lose anything other than a little hit to our ego for believing her if it isn't true.

He pushed us to be with SOMEONE. Minna has the most fans, so we ended up moving towards her.

And how are Trude's feelings clear? Remember, the last time we saw her she forcibly made out with is to distract herself from the fact that she failed to save her sister.

I'm going off the last thing we heard about her, which was Erica's rather direct comment.
And stop reading motivations into Trude's actions. We don't know why she kissed us then. What you say may be plausible, but MC said as much to Erica, who told him something that contradicted that. Now, Erica isn't Trude, but they're very good friends, apparently.

Well, if your just curious, there's no reason you just can't ask her after we clear the air with her, so to speak. She dosn't seen shy about her powers, and she dosn't seem like much of a lier. We'd be able to tell if was lieing with a little bit of questioning.

What in fuck's name makes you think that? It's easier to just ask her. We don't need to "clear the air" beforehand that way. Is there some reason you're opposed to asking someone else? I really don't see any possible harm in it.

MC certainly seemed pretty concerned about it when he first found out. Indeed, the entire basis for that distress was the prospect of Minna knowing how he felt (about things generally, but still). If you don't think it's important that's fine, but I'm still going to try to find out more. I assume you won't object, or try to prevent that, since you don't care; I'm fine with that.

We have no direct knowledge of Trude's feelings. You can interpret her behavior as indicating only lust, or you can interpret her behavior as indicating sincere romantic feelings. The only things we have to go on when deciding between these (or other) hypotheses are what other people have said. Sean said it was just lust, Sakamoto said it was a crush, and Erica said it was sincere.
I think that tips in favor of sincerity. Maybe you disagree, but that's all that we have to work with here, so don't pretend otherwise.

Why? It might just make her think that we're not interested, and so she can stop feeling whatever toward us and stop feeling guilty about feeling it. It's bad if you're a Minnafag, I guess.
Personally, I'm sick of dealing with all these bitches, but I think we actually have a decent shot at being able to fix Trude's head problems, and so should focus on that first. No need to make out with her.

I think you underestimate her fortitude, and overestimate her feelings. It's not like she's not aware of our stuff with Trude. Minna's a big girl - a fucked up one, but nonetheless 19 now - we needn't treat her like porcelain.
Besides, that seems like just the sort of thing PF would pull.

And you need a bit of a reality check. We've progressed a lot in our relarionship with Minna. It will hurt both of us if we end it. It's something to consider before we go running after Trude.

You got tunnel vision, bro. We don't know what the deal is with us and either of them, and we've gotten pretty far with both. Our shit with Minna's a lot more complicated than our stuff with Trude, but that doesn't make it better. It wouldn't be "running after Trude" any more than it would be "running after Minna." We're probably pissing someone off regardless of what we do. It's why we should have stayed clear of the whole thing.
