The way I see it old man Hayate after fighting shit his whole life to escape back to the bureau jumps back in time.

He finds himself just before he gets taken and drags his ass into a private spot.

He explains what happens and that his past needs to change in a big fucking way or things go bad

They come up with a plan to change the path things go along

They put this into play and then start making subtle signs of Hayate dicking around with time around so that we notice it

Our time comes around and we avoid the fate originally planned

We realize that we need to do all the things we did in the past so we go do it.

We end up with three timelines then

1 original
2 first loop
3 each subsequent loop

Original is old man Hayate, first loop is the one he went back into and then the others are a self sustaining chain of events

I had a theory about the dreams of canon actually.

It's not something malicious. It's a training method used by the Bureau for trainees pulled from before their "story" started.

It both gives the trainee the experience he or she would have gained in his or her original story, and maintains canon, to keep from pissing off the Transpace Guard (or whatever group has put themselves in charge of maintaining canonicity. I haven't read those quests).

If this is true,
A) There have been a lot more dreams than the ones we've seen, and
B) Some of our other classmates are experiencing this as well, most notably Hina and Keima.

I do have a theory about the watch, though. I think that someday, once we're much, much older - nearing out deathbed older - we're going to give the watch to a young Jakob with instructions to go back in time and eventually give it to us, knowing full well that the watch is going to be destined to get broken along the way, despite Jakob's best efforts. This would explain the condition it was in, the reason why Jakob likes us so much (his past is our future), why he was so content with giving it to us, and so forth.
