    I have a present for you, /tg/.
This is a really rare game from 1998.

    http://thepiratebay.se/torrent/6316931/Jeff_Waynes_War_of_the_worlds_PC_game_-Fluxfield

Imagine Rome: Total War, crossed with XCOM, set in Britain in 1898. The canon is changed - after the destruction of the Martian device at Horsell Common, the Martian landers change course for Scotland. With Britain readying itself for War, and Scotland quickly falling to the Martian menace, as the UK falls back to Yorkshire and Lancashire, two sides ready themselves for the greatest war humanity had ever known.

You are takes with guiding the war effort - building bases, researching technologies, and leading either the defence of Great Britain, or it's destruction.

I will be seeding this for the next twelve hours.

    >Controls

Everything is done with the mouse, with Keyboard hotkeys. You need to Hold right-click to issue more complex commands. Upon the map of Britain, when you have a constructor in the sector, hold right-click and release on the icon of hills to enter the Tactical map. Here, you construct buildings. Doing so through this view is essential since it allows you to plan your bases and defences exactly as you need to.

On the world map, using the Structure view (f2), hold-right-click factories to produce units.

You have three resources per faction. Use the Resource view, (f3, f4 and f5), to see which counties are good for which resource, and focus your production accordingly.
Adjacent Sectors bleed over any excess resources they have to ones that need it.

For the record: Human players can build what's basically steam powered Leman Russ tanks. Armoured tracklayers.
    >> Anonymous 03/20/12(Tue)22:11 No.18398685
    >Humans

Oxford's position compared to various resources, is fantastic. This makes Oxford a fantastic place to centre unit production. Don't be tempted to turn over every county to production - you want most outputting resources to other sectors that need it. This means you want most of your resource buildings centred around the coasts, except for those in the Midlands pumping out Ironclads to use for coastal shelling. Early game (the first year of the war), the Ironclads can put out more firepower than any other unit in the game, over extreme range, as long as there's a coast or river. Dover is also prepared for Ironclad production.

Focus your defence in Yorkshire and Lancashire.
Do not give the Martians an inch. Line your bases with static guns (light and heavy) using Sappers and push every single unit you can North to hold the line.
You have no chance of pushing into Scotland until you have level 2 Tracklayers supported by Ironclads, Slef-propelled guns and Balloons for spotting.

    >Aliens

Don't worry about the first few days. Scotland is undefended, and will fall quickly. Push to Edinburgh, but no further, until you're teched up to the heavy tripods (the ones with the green eyes). You should have all the resources you need. if Humanity attacks, light walker squads should be more than capable of wiping them out to begin with, but you will quickly need to prepare defenses before the swarms of tanks start coming. Don't over-stretch yourself. You are at your weakest early-game. Late-game, you are practically unstoppable.

Focus your attacks on the heartlands. Avoid the coasts. Whilst your Tripods can easily wade into the sea or rivers, the Human Ironclads can make very short work of light Tripods, and seriously threaten Heavy ones.

You will want to aim for Oxford, London, Essex, Birmingham and Kent. They will be the heart of Human unit production. Wipe them out, and the rest of the counties should be easy targets. Attacking from inland should make the Ironclads a non-issue.
    Let the Red Weed grow.

I must demand greentext and storytime, either of your defence of the Empire, or your destruction of it.
Regardless of whether the campaign is finished or not - Some of the most dramatic elements will be, say, the enormous tank invasion to re-take Edinburgh, or the desperate defence of Birmingham, or the nine Tripods annihilating Newcastle.

There were ships of shapes and sizes
    Scattered out along the bay
And I thought I heard her calling
    As the steamer pulled away
The Invaders must have seen them
As across the coast they filed
    Standing firm between them
    There lay Thunder Child

    Moving swiftly through the waters
    Cannons blazing as she came
    Brought a mighty metal War-Lord
Crashing down in sheets of flame
    Sensing victory was nearing
    Thinking fortune must have smiled
    People started cheering
    'Come on Thunder Child'
    'Come on Thunder Child'

The Martians released their Black Smoke, but the ship sped on, cutting down one of the tripod figures. Instantly, the others raised their Heat Rays and melted the Thunder Child's valiant heart.

    Lashing ropes and smashing timbers
Flashing Heat Rays pierced the deck
    Dashing hopes for our deliverance
As we watched the sinking wreck
With the smoke of battle clearing
    Over graves in waves defiled
    Slowly disappearing
    Farewell Thunder Child!
    Slowly disappearing
    Farewell Thunder Child!

Generally the idea behind War of the Worlds and its story was that the British Empire was the jewel of the world, the true military superpower and if it fell, then what nation could resist the Martians? And if the British Empire could survive, then surely it could eliminate the Martians that land elsewhere on Earth.

I guess it depends if you believe that any cylinders were landing outside of the United Kingdom. If they were, then no, chances are that they wouldn't be able to obtain any international assistance. It's quite old fashioned and biased, yes, but Imperial Britain really represents the entirety of humanity in almost every loyal rendition of War of the Worlds.

Kind of makes you wonder who planned the Martian invasion. Considering they were at their weakest when they just landed, surely it would have made more sense to land across the world and build up their strength? Not that it mattered, in canon, what with the death-via-bacteria due to consuming the human blood.

I guess the general idea was to cut off the head of the snake before it knew anything. Word would spread if they attacked other parts of the world and the hearts of civilisation would reinforce themselves and prepare for the coming war. This way, although they suffered heavy casualties, they had the element of surprise and eliminated the greatest empire of the world at that point in history. After that point, victory was guaranteed.

We're yet to fully decipher what causes certain things to memetically spiral out of control, for better or worse. Perhaps those electronic beats were simply fucking awesome back in that day and age, as was the story?

    You, sir, are an idiot.

H.G.Wells wrote this story in 1898. It's one of the first, if not THE first, alien invasion stories ever.

Jeff Wayne did the album version in 1978. It was widely regarded to reflect the tone of the novel amazingly.

This is a game based on a slightly modified version of the the book, with design based on the art in Jeff Wayne's album.

As for why it has produced so many films and books? War of the Worlds was one of the grandparents of science fiction, it deserves respect.

However, beyond our solar system, it might not be necessary. Truly alien lifeforms, even bacteria, might not even recognise terrestrial life as being alive, let alone compatible. What it might be is horribly toxic, so as long as we don't EAT them, we should be alright.

Hm, y'know all this nostalgia of the war of the worlds reminds me of this book I read in middle school that's pretty much a big what if the martians were immune to the disease and bacterium of Earth. Basically it takes place far ahead in the future where the Martians conquered Earth. They enslaved what was left of humanity to be perpetual "cattle" by taking some to human farms to extract blood from them to feed, all the while giving them some form of government with a caste like system (basically imagine the Combine in Half Life 2 how they enslaved humanity and gave most control to Dr. Breen, but instead of it all being fascist, it's more like a feudel/monarch system). Every person who reaches a certain age (I believe it's 13) must have a metal plate imbedded in their scalp as means of monitoring and tracking where everyone is.

Observing our species and our culture, observing the powers that we had and our national borders.

Not spying inside buildings and seeing people with a cold.

Besides, you're missing the point of the book - The Martian's didn't lose to the common cold, they lost to their own Hubris. They assumed superiority over "lesser" beings, and found they had overlooked something minor which brought their entire invasion crashing down.

He was writing during a time when the British empire was likewise acting in such a fashion. He couldn't be overt about it, but that was the deal. It was critical of Imperialistic practices.

It also served to highlight the Hubris of mankind - that superior beings could exist. That our assumption of superiority is just that, an assumption. A lot of modern invasion stories would do well to remember that instead of making another mindless tale of humans win teh edn.

Eh...it's hard to support that reading.
First of all, the story and it's ending was pretty typical of Invasion Literature, which could hardly be described as "critical of empire."

If you actually read the passage carefully the reason the Martians were vulnerable to disease wasn't that they were from Mars and thus hadn't built up a resistance to earth diseases.

It was because the Martians had long ago exterminated all diseases and microbes on Mars. Because in Wells's day, that seemed possible, because we hadn't discovered viruses, and it actually seemed like a good idea.

Britain was targeted for other reasons too. As a large imperialistic nation, it faced a serious bout of interplanetery imperialism in a type of karma. The book talks about the Martian motives, and that they don't see us as worthy life, like the imperialists on Earth didn't see the Africans or the natives of places as worthy lives. Also, the Brits were the main audience for the book at the time.

Think of the era. Europe was the entire developed world at the time and the British isles would give the Martians a massive strategic advantage to take over the rest of the continent. It's the perfect beachhead to take out the strongest parts of humanity. From there they could steamroll the colonial world, the far east and the Americas. North America and the far East would probably be their biggest hurdles after Europe though.

It's a reference to The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, vol. II. In the LoEG universe, every fictional (mostly literary) thing is real. So you have John Carter and Gulliver of Mars storming a Cephalid launch base (let's just call the WoTW Martians that), alongside C.S.Lewis' Sorns and pretty much every kind of Martian apart from the DC Comics and Warner Brothers varieties, just as the Cephalid invade Earth. All they find are some maps and a Crystal Egg.

    Okay guys.

So, I've played this since yesterday. I'll give you some helpful tips.

Left click is good for selecting units. Right clicking empty space lets you de-select. Right clicking your units allows you to give more complex commands.

Building: To build something, have a Sapper (for defenses) or a construction unit (for everything else) in a specific area. Then, right click that county, press click the green button and you'll enter the tactical map.

From there, right click your Sapper/Constructor, go to the build menu and you can build whatever you like from it. You can even place where it goes.

Resources are hard as ass to figure out. As the British Empire, you've got three major resources: Steel, Coal and Oil. Steel is helpful for building units and structures. Coal is useful for unit production and bolstering everything other resource (I think). Oil is for sustaining your units. All three resources work off one another.
    >> Anonymous 03/22/12(Thu)18:12 No.18420230
So, in order to make effective use of your resources, look at each resource (its total production capabilities) and the silver bar on each on (current consumption rate). Holding your mouse cursor over each resource bar should tell you what sort of resource-producing building there (For example, if you panned over the Iron stat in, say, Oxford, it will tell you that "the next facility you build there will improve steel production by 30 tonnes". So, in order to get those 30 tonnes, you'll need a Steel Mill and maybe a Coal Mine.

Resources do in fact bleed over from other territories into needier areas, so your coasts should be lined with production buildings (and maybe some shipyards) and your interior territories should be producing shit.

Speaking of which, you should really consider building a command post in every territory, just to make sure you gain access to their resources.

Research is relatively intuitive, but I can't figure out any good military strategies that DON'T INVOLVE IRONCLAD BOMBARDMENS EVERYWHERE.
    >> Anonymous 03/22/12(Thu)18:15 No.18420267
    Another thing to mention:

BUILDING SHIT TAKES FOREVER. Keep this in mind when you start the game, because even if you immediately begin Ironclad production on September 1st (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED), it will take until the middle of November before they actually make out into the water.
    >> Anonymous 03/22/12(Thu)18:17 No.18420295
And remember, as the humans, you have THREE ADVANTAGES:

NUMBERS! (lol this is not an advantage at all)
RANGE! (only really works if the walkers stop moving)
DEFENSES! (hell yes naval guns on land bitch)

    USE THEM WELL.
