You are Sonia Reynard, Corvette Pilot and Man at Arms for the House of Jarik-Dremine. You are currently on the Estate grounds of the Harmen family, rulers of world of Loran II. Like the others in the squadron you'll be expected to attend the ball being held in honor of the officers who fought to defend the planet three days ago. You and the other newly promoted pilots from the squadron are at the lowest end of the officer track allowed to attend.

You're well dressed for the occasion wearing the brand new uniform you recieved earlier today complete with sparkling new medals. While it may look ornate you get the feeling it would take a lot to damage the material and its surprisingly comfortable to boot. Its all enough to give you a serious ego boost until you spot a higher ranking Knight stroll past the room you're in with barely any room left on his coat for awards.

There are a few minutes left for everyone to get a look at themselves and their new medals in the mirrors before its time to head for the main event.

Your kill count in space is actually fairly average since most of the others participated in hunting down some jamming craft where you did not. Where you leave the others in the dust is your kill count while on foot or in atmosphere, which netted you a Bronze citation star normally only awarded to infantry or marines. Your Medal of Bravery was the result of your mad charge into the open hanger of the enemy landing corvette.

Knight Lieutanant Dayton is starting to seem increasingly uncomfortable as the group of you make your way towards the main hall.

"God I hate these parties, they're amazing things but I'd take an asteroid belt full of raiders over one any day of the week. It's like walking through a hostile refugee camp built on a minefield; you never know if someone's going to stab you in the back or if something you'll say will blow up in your face."
"Why'd you become a Kight sir?" Asks Wyn. "You had to know there'd be society events like these."
"It sure as hell wasnt my decision, but enough about that."

The entry hall to the main ballroom is a good size, large enough it could be used as a ballroom in smaller functions.

"This is the final weapons check in. If you have anything on you that you shouldnt please check it in now." A well dressed Army sergent informs you. "Just trying to avoid any incidents."

The LT unbuckles his weapon holster and hands it over to an attendant. Mike hesitantly checks in a knife he managed to find somewhere.

"Cant think of anyone like that who might be here off the top of my head."

    >Otherwise, any strange etiquette around here?
"Be polite and courtious. Dont swear if you can help it but if you do keep it quiet. What else... have a plan to kill everyone you meet, but only act if they make the first move? That last one's kind of iffy, how about just dont hurt anyone."
    >> That slow typing guy !!cAsGzl185mF 03/20/12(Tue)15:41 No.18394170
"On my six people. Stick with me if you can but if you're determined to wander off stay in pairs."

From the way the Lieutenant has been talking you'd think you were following him into a dungeon. Walking through one of the entrances it seems to be anything but that. The ballroom must be the largest in the castle, with a domed ceiling and balconies and polished stone columns running along the sides. Curved staircases to either side of the entrances lead upwards to the first set of balconies. There are elevators as well but they've been partially concealed to look like the other stone pillars.

Around the edges of the ground floor are raised platforms with railings, all with seating and tables present. The highest platforms are towards the back, the only ways to reach them being a red carpeted staircase flanked by guards or via the surrounding lower platforms all of which are occupied by nobles and servants. The remaining floor space, even with all of the room at the edges taken up, is still more than enough for the hundred odd officers and dignataries already present. The Green uniforms of army officers and black of navy are interspersed with the occasional red of a Knight here and there.

As you head in you idly notice an orchestra occupying one of the platforms off to the left playing some classical piece you havent heard before.

The Lieutenant leads the group of you around the edges of the crowd until he finds the seating that's been set aside for all of you.

"They'll have servants check in with the tables every so often if you want something to eat or drink, just dont think you'll be able to hide out over here. If you get seperated meet here, I've talked to Chinelo, she's is going to be watching the table so she doesnt get in the way with her wheelchair."

No sooner does your group head back towards the main crowd than something happens. A knight spots the group of you and heads straight your way. It doesnt take long for Dayton to spot him as well.
"Hell." He says under his breath then turns to you all. "What ever happens dont interfere, especially if a fight starts. Reynard, that goes double for you and Serth." he says pointing at you both.

As the other Knight approaches at a fast walk you're not sure if he's going to stop or suddenly attack your CO. He does stop at the last second though and belts out one word.
    "Frisbee!"
"Oh god dammit." Dayton curses, rolling his eyes and sighing before responding wearily.

"Daniel. You werent here earlier, that must make you late to the party in every way I see."

Daniel holds up his hands. "Easy there pre-school teacher, I was out fighting on the preiphery, only just got back. You ready to prove once and for all whose the best?"

"Daniel, now isnt the time. The Emperor has-"

"Yes I know all about that but there's still time. Afraid you'll get shown up in front of your charges?"

"No. Lord Harmen has already stated that he doesnt want any fights at this party."

    "Tell that to them."
Daniel says, jerking his thumb towards one of the platforms closer to the doors. Everyone in the area was clearing out to make room for a pair of men removing their uniform coats and then testing the weight of some wider bladed fencing sabers.

A "Ladies and gentlemen, Commander Graham of the Battleship Taskmaster has challenged Knight Pavik Casimir to an Honor duel."

You spot the announcer, a Butler, off to the side speaking into a comminicator.
"With the upcoming offensive looming a decree has been put forth by the Emperor for all fueds between Houses be ended or resolved quickly. This is to be done with no collateral damage to valuable war infrastructure. As this duel falls within these constraints it is being permitted at this time."

You hear a faint "What did I just hear?!" shouted from off in the direction of the higher platforms. It doesnt take long for who you assume must be Lord Harmen to appear, headed towards the duelists and flanked by a pair of soldiers in dress uniforms. The Lord is wearking the grey uniform of a General, contrasting sharply with his red-orange hair and mustache.

    >Watch amusedly. Stop your watch to see how long it takes security to drag them off. Nab a drink from one of the waiters nearby.

Dayton heads in the direction of the impending fight with the other Knight right beside him smiling the whole time.
You decide to follow so you can at least watch what happens. By the time you and the others have gotten closer Lord Harmen is already at the base of the stairs to the platform.

"What is the meaning of this! I gave clear instructions that this sort of thing would not be permitted now you tell both of them that I'll-"

The conversation becomes difficult to overhear as the Lord attempts to force his way up the stairs only to be held back by some of his own men as more security arrives.
    "Sir please!"

"Fine! Let me talk to them." He says finally relenting.
After a minute of quiet arguing, which causes no small amount of gossip from the other lords and ladies present, Lord Harmen descends the staircase and heads back towards his own seating.

    Both men prepare to duel.
    >> That slow typing guy !!cAsGzl185mF 03/20/12(Tue)17:02 No.18394915
With both men standing at the ready the Butler raises a hand in the air then shouts. "Begin!"

Knight Casimir doesnt appear to be one to hold back, charging in and delivering a number of fast blows in an attempt to slap the other man's sword aside and end the fight quickly. While Graham is forced to backpedal he's apparently experienced enough that the tactics of the other man arent any kind of shock to him. As Casimir keeps up his assault Graham deflects a blow while side stepping to the left nearly catching the Knight off guard.
After that the fight is on more even footing with neither seeming to gain the upper hand. Two minutes in you start to notice something and the reason for Casimir's opening assault becomes clear. While he's the stronger of the two the Navy officer is slightly more skilled with a sword.

Running out of time the Knight makes one more bid to overpower his opponent driving both of their swords up high into the air. Graham is able to break away faster, stabbing his blade into the Knights chest.
His yell of pain is slightly drowned out by a sharp electrical crack as the man drops to the floor and begins to seizure. You can her his teeth clicking together from where you're standing. The spasms wracking the man fade after a few seconds and looks up to see the navy officer standing above him. The sword blades flash and dissapear leaving a handle and a weighted stump for the blade.

"You wouldnt yield to me before because you had backup. Nobody's coming to save your ass this time."

Casimir tosses the sword handle away. "I concede defeat." he gets out inbetween heavy breathing.

Dayton shakes his head. "Holographic weapons. They can still pack enough punch to stop your heart if you're in bad shape."
    >> That slow typing guy !!cAsGzl185mF 03/20/12(Tue)17:17 No.18395069
"So Frisbee, you think you can take me? We could even use those sissy holographics if it'll convince you." Daniel begins pressing your CO.

    "Not interested."
The two continue arguing until the other Knight asks the butler who had done the announcements earlier about the possability.
"At the request of Lord Harmen there will be no further duels on the Estate grounds. He only allowed that one because it's been something of a problem netween the navy and the rest of the House for a few years now. If they were to have fought with real weapons they would have been escorted off the premesis."

"Dont think this is over Dayton, victory will be mine!" He promises before wandering back into the crowd.

"Well that guy was annoying." states Isod.
"Was that guy serious sir?" Asks Alex.

"Yes he wants to fight me because of something that happened years ago but he doesnt want to make a request through chanels. It would be... awkward for everyone involved please dont ask about it. Just go get into trouble or something."

"How was the duel?" the Dro'all woman asks at your return.

"It was interesting. Not every day you get to see some guy stabbed in the chest with the equivilant of a shock baton."
    "Seriously?"
    "Yeah, holographic swords."
"Oh! I thought you meant the people who wanted to duel were dragged off by security for a second."

After getting some food which might have been a bit too rich, you decide to go looking for familiar faces. Or voices, or maybe names. Whatever it couldnt be that hard to find someone right?

As if to prove you wrong there are twice as many people out on the floor chatting or mingling as there were before. Mike tells you Alex has gone off looking for the Knights who helped you out in orbit. With that covered you yourself decide to look for the army pilots you helped on the ground.

    >Decidedly average

You spend a half hour going about the room, asking about any army pilots that might be present. A few of the other pilots and even Knights trade stories of the battle in orbit or in atmosphere. While they are pilots the people you're looking for are still technically army, but not army officers. Its all a bit maddening but you do eventualy bump into one of them.

    "Hi is your name Zhou?"
    "Yes, Zhou Tan, yours?"
"Sonia Reynard, I was flying that Type-4 when you had the older Jumpjet?"
"Oh hey its nice to finally meet you, but we shouldnt talk about the uh... the borrowing around here. I heard Baron Archivald is going to be showing up later."

It turns out Zhou doesnt know where his wingman is but he shows you where the rest of his unit is tabled in case you end up looking for them later. You spend some time listening to stories from the other army pilots and some of the officers from the Tenth Rangers. Once their vehicle losses have been replaced they expect to be assigned as part of the House's contribution to the Expeditionary Force. Apparently despite their intial problems with the technicals they'd impressed Lord Harmen enough that he'd prioritised the division for replacements.

When it gets to the point that you feel you're overstaying your welcome you wish them luck before heading back towards your unit.

Before you get back to the table you encounter Alex who's been talking with a Knight sporting an extravagant mustache.

"And this must be your wingman, its good to meet you in person. I am Knight Sedat Baykal, you were most helpful in coving us so we could break through to help those Terrans."

Alex speaks up. "Knight Baykal is one of the three Knights that helped us out, or vice versa. After we did our attack run on the Super I went back to help with the battlecruisers they were fighting."

"And without that help things might have been a bit more dire. As it was only one of our ships made it back to the defense platforms under its own power. Poor Nilsen lost nearly his entire crew when his ship was struck by that suicide attack."

"Wait, somebody survived that ship exploding?" you can heardly believe your own words.

"Oh goodness yes." The Knight replies seeming a bit distressed. "Its a terrible business losing one's ship. Most Knights will spring for an emergency teleporter system as soon as they can. They're bloody expensive but worth every penny if the alternative is death. Knight Nilsen had several installed over the years so most of his essential crew would be able to escape but not all of them made it."

"My, its been so many years since I've commanded anything but my humble cruiser. Attack Corvettes are always handy in a pinch, they have all of the benefits of other corvettes, speed, maneuverability and they pack a punch with that special twin linked beam of theirs. After that better engines are the best thing to look at. If it's short range duties you're assigned Aries corporation produces the best output engines for their price, but they burn more fuel. If you dont like that always go GE, you'll never be able to aquire Royal Armories powerplants when you need them. You wingman here commands an older Dagger, with the right upgrades it could match an attack corvette easily with that torpedo launcher."

He pauses as he notices someone else in the crowd. "Ah! Antanas could you come over here?"

Another Knight soon arrives sporting a similar cut mustache though of a different colour.

"Knight Antanas Koppel these are Pilots Alexander Palaiologos and Sonia Reynard. They were commanding some of the corvettes that assisted us."

"Wonderful! Its always good to meet new officers, you'll have to excuse our erstwhile leader being absent he was wounded in his emergency teleport."

"Dont trouble yourself Koppel, they thought he was dead. And we can go five minutes without hearing 'tallyho!'"

The Knights soon find themselves sidetracked and you end up listening to a few tales of adventures they've been on over the years before you can get a word in edgewise.

You are 1 rank away from being able to command a corvette squadron. After that you'll either become a full officer or you'll be asked if you want to try to become a Knight.

Knight Koppel sensing he may have found a receptive audience starts in.
"There are many Houses in the Dominion. When some are destroyed others are formed to take their place but not everyone dies when a House is wiped out. Sometimes you will end up with Knights without a House, they become known as a Knights Errant. Some may act as mercenaries or fight for a cause they believe in, but all still serve the Dominion as a whole. Many years ago there was a rebellion against the ruling House which was put down but until it was several minor Houses were destroyed. Many of these Knights banded together and have formed an independant order of which we are members. We operate under the auspices of the Ruling House and are held accountable by them for our actions. Because of this our ships can deploy where they're needed to fight enemies of the Dominion without having to play the politics game so much.
Things have become much more stable since that time so we're having to recruit Pilots a bit earlier in their career. It's entirely legal I assure you. Your House shouldnt give you much trouble about it. Think it over both of you, we'll be in system for a few more days."

Baykal hold up his hand. "Antanas may gloss over it but becoming a Knight is not without problems. It is not just a military rank but political as well."

"You are ruining my sales pitch." complains Koppel.

"Weather you become a Knight of your own House or an Order like ours any actions you take would have ramifications beyond just the military. Remember; all Knights are Officers but not all officers are Knights. Knights and Barons and those above are the ones that shape how the Houses interact with each other. If an officer screws up its not as bad as when a Knight does. Remember that."

"I can answer that. Now while we havent every truely deployed beyond the borders of the Dominion or its satelite territories our order is not that old in the grand scheme of things. It's possible we may be called upon to aid the expeditionary forces but most of the time we act as a rapid response unit. We have ships ready to move within seconds of recieving word, arriving much like the cavalry to the rescue."

Baykal continues next. "We have also been deployed on occasion to deal with forces that could be trying to upset the established order. Those threatening the ruling House or suspected terrorist organizations. Groups filling to violate treaties we have with other Factions in order to get ahead. What we dont have are any kind of ground forces, it's all space work but it can be interesting. Think it over."

Off by the stairs to the balcony you spot a tall red haired young man wearing an army officer's uniform and decide to approach. While army uniforms lack the combat bars of the Navy it leaves plenty of room for other medals and decorations.

"Excuse me, I'm looking for a Lieutenant Harmen?"

"Well you've found him." He smiles. "What might I do for you?"

"Those things take some serious training, have you flown them often?"

"Well I never managed to get used to them. They didn't really cover it in pilot training for spacers."

    >Most seem in favor of attempting dancing
    Okay

"I havent tried any dancing in a long time."
You wonder if the Lord's son is using your situation as an excuse to hit on you. That neither of the other pilots in question are female might *MIGHT* be a coincidence.
    You doubt it.
    "Fine lets do this."

Starting off slow the Lordling walks you through the basics which you are quick to pick up on. You did watch a little dancing on TV. Shortly after you get onto the dance floor the slightly taller Troy spots his Uncle.
"There he is right on time. He should go talk to some of the other dignataries and maybe even my Father for a bit before my aunt pressures him to try dancing."

From what you can tell the large number of people also dancing should give you plenty of cover. It's a good thing too as you fumble a bit and step on the young man's foot a time or two. A couple of minor collisions dont seem to draw much attention as there are numerous other young officers out by the sides that really dont have a clue what they're doing. The trick is staying where there's enough cover but not pissing off the more experienced dancers by running into them. There arent any more serious mishaps however as this particular song ends and the orchestra sets up for another.

"They're still talking. You did pritty good."

You see a red laser dot appear on the chest of his uniform.

Taking stock of where the laser must be coming from (somewhere behind you) you tighten your grip on his arm and yank him to the side, turning as you go to give the impressing of starting to dance.
"Woah easy." Harmen manages to get out as the music starts back up again.
"Sniper to the West!" you whisper, dancing the both of you behind a larger couple.
    "You sure?!" he asks.

"Yes, there was a laser dot on your uniform."

Without hopefully making it too obvious you make your way across the hall and put one of the platforms and a column between yourselves in the sniper. After calling out for security it doesnt take long for a few soldiers to arrive and take up positions protecting the Lord's son.

After a minute a large black haired ashen faced man dressed much like a Knight but with a much darker red coat appears. He dismisses the soldiers.

    "Nephew." he says to Troy.
"Uncle." the young man replys evenly.
"You debt to me is repayed, that will be all."
"Yes sir." Troy turns to you. "Sorry about all this, I didnt have a lot of choice. Good luck." He turns and heads off leaving you with Baron Archivald.

"Pilot, come with me." he says simply. A pair of soldiers fall into step behind you.

The Baron leads the way through a door and into the hallways crisscrossing the rest of the castle interior. At last you arrive at the door to what looks to be an office, where you see Zhou and Gromm already waiting outside. You're led through the door which the soldiers close behind you.

"That was done with a bit more tact than I expected from you." The Baron says, activating a holo monitor which calls up your service record. "You successfully relocated my nephew to a position of cover without drawing undue attention. Had the sniper been real I and my Cousin would be indebted to you."
    "Thank you sir."

"I'm not done. You will stand at attention until I order you to do otherwise."
He calls up a wireframe hologram of the fighter you borrowed with damaged sections highlighted in red. You didnt know the shot that had taken out one of your engines had penetrated into the main body of the fighter so far.
"I do not appreciate people making unauthorized use of my personal property, escpecially when that property costs more than most starships. Under normal circumstances I'd be furious, instead I'm merely angry, not just at you or the two outside but at the situation in general. Your record so far is... impressive, though I've seen my fair share of rising stars burn out."
Archivald walks back in front of his desk.
"The situation dictated that seizure of property to repell the invaders was necessary. If you hadnt taken that fighter someone else would have. That doesn't mean I have to like it."

Faster than you can believe the man takes hold of a glove he'd removed earlier and slaps you across the face with it.

"That was your punishment for damage to my property."

He returns to his seat behind the desk. "Thank you for brining it back at all. And congratulations on your recent promotion to Flight Leader. You're dismissed."

With that the door opens and the soldiers escort you back to the ball room.

    "Sir?"

"Not a frisbee!... sorry. What can I do fo you Reynard?" Maybe he's a bit farther gone than you thought.
"Sir what do you know about Knights Errant?"

He sits up and reaches for a glass of water.
"Not as much as I'd like. Most do the whole lone wolf thing which can be for any number of reasons but I've heard of independant orders. Leaving one's House to go it alone isnt exactly encouraged of the obvious reason being that they'd likely take a ship with them. I know of atleast one Knight that was kicked out of our House awhile back but I was still a kid when it happened. Decided to go follow his dreams and nuke shit that our House didnt want to touch. That's a quick way to end up dead if you dont make a lot of friends elsewhere. Before I forget there is one ship class that are only given as gifts to Errants. What was it..."

He stares off for a second then snaps his fingers. "Hunter class. The Hunter class battlecruiser. They're only built at certain shipyards so they're rare. Looks a bit like a shark except where the mouth is there's a spinal mount weapon. Not sure what kind, I've never seen one before."

"Other than getting slapped in the face it was kind of funny in hindsight."

You frown at something he said, but not the joke.
"Only locals call Dreminth four by the name Petras, where'd you hear that?"

The ball continues for a few more hours after the run in with the Baron. There are no other mishaps other than someone at a nearby table nearly choking on an icecube and around 2300 hours most of the guests have begun to filter out.
Lt Dayton has sobered up by that time and calls you all together before everyone can leave.

I say we buy a Dominion attack corvette once we get the bonus. . we can transfer the PD cannon we have, buy another one and some other things. Perhaps a Armour upgrade, so we dont get that banged up when shields go down.

Also we should see if we can get the warhead out of one of the missiles, and put it on out assault shuttle. Just in case we get close to a massed battle with another super large carrier.

Have them pull our stunt we did dirtside with their FTL engines or something. Perhaps coupling it with playing debris , to full enemy sensors. A manoeuvre we might have to practice a bit: simulate getting hit and loosing armour and stuff with it, the shuttle on silent running and drifting towards the target, waiting for it to drop shields and do a cold start on it.

We have to split it three ways. with Alex having the largest part of it. We could have him buy us out, but i doubt he has enough to buy us and Mike out at the same time while refitting it for combat duty.

we have some bonuses over them for the non standard shit we pulled so i doubt that they have as much as we have.

Now that i gave it some thought a fighter bomber would be better for the boarding nuclear warhead gimmick. it could be fitted with a autopilot or remote control from our new ship, and with the HUD we could transpose our perception to the POV of the fighter cockpit

This way we dont loose the marines in case it goes to shit, and are able to board a target if its not entirely obliterated by a internal nuclear detonation or too big for the nuke to take more than a subsystem.

Of course i do think the improvised missile may be a bit expensive and a one time solution waiting for a problem with specific parameters...

But then again we are a vindictive bitch who would have very much loved to cripple that super-heavy somehow, but would have lost the nukes had they been equipped at the time.
    >> Anonymous 03/21/12(Wed)11:35 No.18404620

remember unshielded objects can go through shields, so if the fighter has shields (dunno if they have them) and drops them as son as they are about to impact the targets shields they should be able to ram them or even manage to get in the hangars, should they be open.

And If we could get bunker buster cone heads for the missiles it could turn them far more deadly than even contact nukes, and preclude the need to use the fighter as a single use missile bus, unless that thing is really huge, and every inch of penetration counts.
    >> Anonymous 03/21/12(Wed)17:56 No.18408185
I'd rather take a frigate. with starfighters we would get more gun on the enemy, but we will have to expend prodigious amounts of RP on nukes and torpedoes since fighter bombers will probably double our launch capabilities as well as expenditure.
