She was praying for guidance in a cathedral after all.

In fact, other then Socrates understandable freakout after the first jump, all the historic figures seemed to handle it a lot better then anyone reasonably would.

I did have an idea for a Bill and Ted game where each of the players pick a historical figure like Elvis, Abe, Joan D Arc, who work for the Excellent future goverment.

Basicly they use their time machine to stop the forces of bogus from destorying the future in various time periods while learning to be excellent to each other.

Bill and Ted didn't establish paradoxes. so we do not know how attempting to change the past works in the Bill&Ted-verse.

we do know it is possible to affect the NOW simply by thinking about coming back sometime later.

All i know is that if i met Joan of Arc I would just feel terrible knowing how her story ends.

That wasn't why she was burned. She was burned for being a Heretic.
Because she refused to say that she HADN'T heard god. She was a threat to the church. (despite them HEAPING support on her before she drove back the British.)
She got the man they wanted onto the throne, but then she wouldn't step back and fade from site like they wanted. So they tortured and murdered her. A few centuries later the SAME organization canonized her as a Saint. WAY TO GO CATHOLICISM!

She was burned for heresy, not witchcraft. Accusations of witchcraft in medieval Europe usually ended with the accused in jail as the Inquisition were VERY suspicious of such accusations. The majority of burnings, including the burning of Jeanne d'Arc were for heresy. And the charges were bullshit anyway, cooked up by the British as an excuse to brutally murder her.

    YES!

OK, so we're looking at a fairly traditional system so far: characters are quantified using a collection of attributes. Does this sound like a good idea, or should there only be a small number of these like "Righteous, Excellent and Gnarly" (Stamina, Charisma and Formidability) with everything else handled in another fashion?

I like this idea. Here's a thought: every character has four dice pools: Excellent, Righteous, and Gnarly, as well as a fourth custom pool specific to your character. The Babes, for example, might have a Totally Hot pool. Joan might have an Amped pool to get crowds fired up, Socrates could have his Reason...

    >I like this idea. Here's a thought: every character has four dice pools: Excellent, Righteous, and Gnarly,

    Mechanics:

Rolls are made on D10s, with a target munber as the goal. a target of 3 or 4 is easy, 12-15 tricky, 22-25 tough, 30+, feindishly hard.

the pool is expended when dice are used. ie, if they're trying to get an Gnarly score of 18, and they have a Gnarly pool of 6 D10.

So, they could roll 2d10's, and hope to get 9'son both, or they could elect to burn deeper into their pool to get more chance of rolling their result. How many dice to roll is the player's choice.

However, once spent, the dice are lost. the pool is only refurbished by performing actions which are Excellent, Righteous, Gnarly, or otherwise Most Excellent, at which point their actions replenish the pool by a number deemed appropriate.

thus, it is always advisable for the players to be Most Excellent to each other, while performing Gnarly, Excellent and Righteous acts...

    Radical!

I had an idea: a "To-Do" list similar to Continuum's "Frag" mechanic (which is itself just a ripoff of the to-do list from BTEA). You can add something to your personal "to-do list" and gain extra dice for your pool, but you can't gain more dice than you have in your smallest pool and you can't regain that number of burned-out dice (can I suggest "burned-out" as the term used to describe dice that are temporarily unavailable until refreshed?) until you check off that line on your to-do list. For the sake of this example, we'll say you can draw a max of six extra dice out of your To-Do List.

Example: Bill and Ted need a distraction to sneak into the principal's office:
    "Hey Bill?"
    "Yeah, Ted?"
"How about after we save the world (AGAIN), rescue The Babes (AGAIN), and stop this evil time-traveling dude and his totally smokin' but totally evil dudette, we come back here and set up some firecrackers to go off right before we get here?"
"That is a most excellent idea, Ted."
    >Righteous but hastily-performed air-guitar solo

Ted puts "Firecrackers in teacher's lounge" on his To-Do List and gains an extra three dice for his Excellent pool. The firecrackers go off a moment later, and he uses the extra Excellent dice to sneak into the office unseen. Ted's Excellent pool is normally 10, but he gets to use 13 dice for this. He uses five (the three firecracker dice and two from his Excellent pool). Until he goes back in time and sets up the firecrackers he can only draw three more dice out of his To-Do List.

You know what... one downside of the Star Wars d6 RPG is having to add all those dice together to get a total. It's not *hard* per se, but it's not a very fast resolution mechanic either.

I kind of feel like we should try and come up with some kind of original mechanic that incorporates a telephone keypad.

What if you played it like Boggle and had it so everyone would roll their pool and quickly figure out how long of a number they could dial without moving more than one key over at a time?

Ex: Bill rolls 1,1,6,8,5 and 2. He can dial this as 1-1-2-5-8-6 (a six-string number). Evil Robot Bill rolls 3,9,3,9,1,1. His longest string is two numbers (either 9-9, 3-3 or 1-1). Bill wins the whatever-they-are-doing.

This sounds kinda complicated, but I think if you had the keypad right in the middle of the character sheet it would be pretty easy.

Most Excellent Adventure is a pen and paper RPG where the players must fix possible alterations of their own timelines (which could affect the rest of humankind in the future) armed only with their wits, coolness and a phone booth.

Every character has four pools: Righteous (running, eating contests), Excellent (being cool, making friends), Gnarly (nut-punches, lassoing), and another stat that you make up. You have 40 d10s to split between your four pools. You can’t have more than 12 dice in any pool.

When you get into trouble you take some dice out of one of your pools (depending on what you’re trying to do) and roll them all at once. Take those numbers and try to dial the longest phone number you can without moving more than one key (horizontally, vertically or diagonally). The longest phone number wins!

Ex: Bill rolls 1,1,6,8,5 and 2. He can dial this as 1-1-2-5-8-6 (a six-string number). Evil Robot Bill rolls 3,9,3,9,1,1. His longest string is two numbers (either 9-9, 3-3 or 1-1). Good regular Bill wins!

The dice you use are burned-out until you get them back. Write the total of burned-out dice in that pool on its antenna.

You also get a free d10 for having a Bud! Every time one of your Buds helps you succeed you gain back all the burned-out dice in that pool.
    >> Anonymous 03/20/12(Tue)16:04 No.18394348
    >>18394344

Watch out, though: The circuits of time are full of totally evil dudes and dudettes that want to like, destroy any opposition to their complete and most heinous grasp over the whole of reality! They only have one pool called Bogus, but they get a TON of dice.

If you ever run out of dice in a pool you’re dead. But don’t worry, dude! Just defeat Death in a game of Twister, Connect Four, or any other game you’re good at and you’ll be totally back to life!

Since you’re like, an unparalleled genius at manipulating the circuits of time, you can get extra dice for putting something on your to-do list. You can have ten dice in your To-Do List.

Example: Bill and Ted need a distraction to sneak into the principal’s office:

    “Hey Bill?”

    “Yeah, Ted?”

“How about after we save the world (AGAIN), rescue The Babes (AGAIN), and stop this evil time-traveling dude and his totally smokin’ but totally evil dudette, we come back here and set up some firecrackers to go off right before we get here?”
“That is a most excellent idea, Ted.”

    (Righteous but hastily-performed air-guitar solo)

Ted puts “Firecrackers in teacher’s lounge” on his To-Do List and gains an extra three dice for his Excellent pool. The firecrackers go off a moment later, and he uses the extra Righteous dice to sneak into the office unseen. Ted’s Righteous pool is normally 10, but he gets to use 13 dice for this. He uses five (the three firecracker dice and two from his Excellent pool). Until he goes back in time and sets up the firecrackers he can only draw seven more dice out of his To-Do List.

I'm worried it might be "too easy" to dial long numbers with the current rules.
Let me roll some dice real quick.
(10 sets of 5d10 dice rolls)

    5,4,5,8,5
    (5)
    6,8,3,9,8
    (5)
    4,7,9,2,5
    (5)
    1,3,1,6,9
    (3)
    0,5,3,1,8
    (4)
    3,8,0,6,2
    (5)
    4,3,2,9,8
    (5)
    4,9,2,7,2,
    (4)
    6,8,1,4,0
    (4)
    4,9,8,0,6
    (5)

Thoughts? Maybe we should remove diagonal movement?

All of those but the following can be made.
    4,9,8,0,6
    6,8,1,4,0
    0,5,3,1,8

I think removing diagonal movement, or maybe restricting the number of times per dial, needs to be done.

    I rolled 10 sets of 5d10 and got the following string totals without using diagonal movement: 3, 2, 4, 3, 3, 2 ,4, 3, 3, and 4. I rolled again using 6d10 without using diagonal movement and got 2, 4, 6, 4, 5, 3, 3, 3, 4, and 5. I wouldn't mind playtesting this over IRC sometime either Thursday night or this weekend.

Here is a more fleshed-out example of conflict.

Very much so, I feel the game should be very rule light and reward creative thinking.

Like let's say that Buffalo Bill and Elvis had been sent back in time to stop some Bogus Robots when a giant T-Rex attacks! Instead of Elvis attacking, Bill attacking, T-Rex attacking, repeat, Elvis and Bill could decide to team up to stop the T-Rex. So Elvis could sing a lullaby to distract the Dino and let's say Elvis passes his CHA test by 4. Buffalo Bill could then add that 4 to his roll to sneak up behind the T-Rex to hogtie him. Such teamwork could reward the players a 'Be Excellent to each other' point.

Now as the game moves along, players build up a BETEO pool through acts of Teamwork, which they can spend on re-rolls, avoiding death or Deus Ex Machina. Now let's say Elvis and the rest of his party have been caught by Bogus-Bots. Elvis can spend a BETEO point from the pool to try and call his T-Rex friend with a song. Elvis rolls and fails the test, but then all the other players join in as back-up singers, allowing Elvis to pass test his singing test. Elvis summons the T-Rex and he starts to cause some serious Dino trouble for the forces of un-excellent.

There is the problem of running out of dice too fast, if you use 5 dice per roll and have a max skill of 12, what if upon success you regained 1/2 (Rounding up for excellence!) of the target + by how many numbers you beat it.
    Ex.

Bill is going to hit on some totally hot babes to try to get them to join their quest, Bill rolls 6 dice in his excellence and gets a number string of 5, the target was 3, so Bill succeeds in talking to the babes, excellent! Since the target was 3, 3/2=2 (rounding up) + 2 because he surpassed the target.
    >> Anonymous 03/21/12(Wed)01:21 No.18400759
Also, perhaps if the roll is 5+ dice and all work in a number, it's a crit success and the bummed out dice of that skill get so hyped on the EXCELLENCE that they refil to the max?

    >There is the problem of running out of dice too fast

Here's what I have written so far on the subject:

    >You also get a free d10 for having a Bud! Every time one of your Buds helps you succeed you gain back all the bummed-out dice in that pool.
    >When two characters work together, they both try to dial the longest number they can, and the winner gets to decide how they pull off the winning action. More than two people can help you out at the same time, but you only get one extra d10 no matter how many people are helping.
    >If more than one Most Excellent Adventurer is trying to succeed they all get an extra d10 (as long as they’re all in the same place or otherwise all helping out at the same time).

I don't know how much more complex this should be... I *really* don't like the idea of having a list of special combo moves (waaaaay too crunchy for this game). When I was writing this my thought was that when you were with your buds you were nearly invincible but if you're separated you will quickly be picked off, thus rewarding teamwork and penalizing lone-wolf behavior. Funny enough, I've been thinking that the RAW are *too* lenient for the Most Excellent Adventurers, since they gain back ALL their bummed-out dice in that pool when they succeed with a buddy's help.

    Thoughts?

"Be Excellent To Each Other"- Player can Bum Out dice to recharge a Bud's Bummed-out dice. This only works for pools they share. Elvis can't Bum his Jailhouse Rock to be excellent to Billy's Cowboy, but he can Bum his Righteous to Be Excellent to Billy's Righteous. You can only do this when you are in the same area, in all 4 dimensions, as each other.

"Station!"- Whenever a Bogus Dude or Dudette has been forced into retreat by your most awesome actions as Buds, you are both allowed to recharge your bummed out dice from the dice that once was bogus. For each die bummed out by the Bogus ones, you can choose to recharge one of your bummed out dice. No Bud? Who's gonna share this most excellent event? Not Station.

One possibility is to use d12 instead of d10. 11 is * and 12 is #. They don't have any numeric value, and are a real bummer to get... Unless you get an 11 AND a 12. Character. It bottles the hopes, dreams, and innate bond of two high school kids in the 90s. Those of us who remember the movie coming out remember being just like them, having ambitions far beyond our means and having noone to believe in them but your friends. We live vicariously the the Wyld Stallions, as their dreams come to represent ours. Somehow, somewhere, they are going to change the world for the better. They just needed a head start. How many here have seen their youthful dreams ground to dust by an uncaring and "bogus" world? A world that drives friends apart and subjugates ambition into mindless thralldom. Perhaps, every time they do an air guitar riff, our jaded hearts do the same.

I like this one the most. It gives a slower reduction to heroism in the game, encourages more risk taking towards excellence (which is what the game is all about, anyway), and still manages to fit with the themes of the game as a whole.

Let's go with that, because failure is always an interruption, but success means you can keep on coasting through your plan.

So, If we go with this, the rules system would go like so...

Most Excellent Adventure is a pen and paper RPG where the players must fix possible alterations of their own timelines (which could affect the rest of humankind in the future) armed only with their wits, coolness and a phone booth.

There are three kinds of characters: Excellent Adventurers (Such as Bill or Socrates), Radical Friends (Like Rufus and Future Ted), and Bogus Dudes (Like Evil Robots or the Principal). You will control one of the Most Excellent Adventurers, and one player (who presents you with challenges) controlls other Excellent Adventurers, the Radical Friends, and the Bogus Dudes. He's the Excellent Adventure Master.

Every Excellent Adventurer has four pools: Righteous (Movement), Excellent (Charm), Gnarly (Strength and Combat), and another stat that you make up to represent abilities unique to your Most Excellent Adventurer. You have 40 d12s to split between your four pools. You can’t have more than 12 dice in any one pool.

When you get into trouble you take some dice out of one of your pools (depending on what you’re trying to do) and roll them all at once. You can never take more than 7 dice out of the same pool at a time. Take those numbers and try to dial the longest phone number you can without moving more than one key (horizontally, vertically or diagonally). 10 represents 0, 11 means the "* key", and 12 is for the "# key". More on those two later. The longest phone number wins! Whoever wins returns all but one of those dice to their pool. The loser forfeits all dice used. These dice are considered Bummed-out. Write the total of Bumned-out dice in that pool on its antenna.
    >> Anonymous 03/21/12(Wed)20:09 No.18409494
Ex: Bill rolls 1,1,6,8,5 and 2. He can dial this as 1-1-2-5-8-6 (a six-string number). Evil Robot Bill rolls 3,9,3,9,1,1. His longest string is two numbers (either 9-9, 3-3 or 1-1). Real Bill wins!

"*" or "#" aren't ever really a part of a phone number, are they guys? That's right, if you ever get those on your rolls, they get wasted. But if you dial "*" and "#" in the same number, you activate the phone booth, and the Excellent Adventure Master will use it to call Radical Friends to your aid! Often times, this results in your victory.

Remember, be excellent to each other, gentlemen. You are always stronger together than you are apart. If two or more of you work on the same problem at the same time, you each gain a bonus die during your attempt. If you succeed, this bonus die is the one that gets Bummed-out. Teamwork always keeps you from getting Bummed.

Like, let's say that Buffalo Bill and Elvis had been sent back in time to stop some Bogus Robots when a giant T-Rex attacks! Instead of Elvis attacking, Bill attacking, T-Rex attacking, repeat, Elvis and Bill could decide to team up to stop the T-Rex. So Elvis could sing a lullaby to distract the Dino while Buffalo Bill could sneak up behind the T-Rex to hogtie him. Since they're working together, Elvis gets a Bud die that he adds to his 4 Blue Sued Shoes dice. The T-rex has 20 Bogus Dice, and uses 5 of them to try to stay awake. Elvis strings a larger number together, so Mr. Dino starts getting sleepy. Buffalo Bill uses 4 of his Rodeo dice, plus the Bud die. T-rex is sleepy, so he can't use more than 3 Bogus dice. Easy win, Dude!

Since you’re like, an unparalleled genius at manipulating the circuits of time, you can get extra dice for putting something on your to-do list. You can have ten dice in your To-Do List. You can choose to draw upon them at any time, creating an event that must later be set up. Even if you succeed at whatever you are attempting, the dice from your To-Do List are Bummed-out until you accomplish the task.

Ted puts “Firecrackers in teacher’s lounge” on his To-Do List and gains an extra three dice for his Righteous pool. The firecrackers go off a moment later, and he uses the extra Righteous dice to sneak into the office unseen. Ted’s Righteous pool is normally 10, but he gets to use 13 dice for this. He uses five (the three firecracker dice and two from his Righteous pool). Until he goes back in time and sets up the firecrackers he can only draw seven more dice out of his To-Do List.
    >> Anonymous 03/21/12(Wed)20:10 No.18409509
Watch out, though: The circuits of time are full of totally evil dudes and dudettes that want to like, destroy any opposition to their complete and most heinous grasp over the whole of reality! They only have one pool called Bogus, but they get a anywhere between 10 and 40 dice in that pool. On the flip side, there are others who are looking out for you. Those Radical Friends we mentioned, they have their own Radical pool of 10-40 dice.

If any one of your pools gets completely Bummed-out, you die. But don’t worry, dude! Just defeat Death in a game of Twister, Connect Four, or any other game you’re good at and you’ll be totally back to life! In this case, the Excellent Adventure Master will play in the place of Death. Just don't tell the grim dude, he'll get depressed.

I will probably catch some harsh flak for this, but I did not go with the * + # = future you idea, AND HERE'S WHY:

According to my playtesters, "if all it takes is a pair you have 1 - 11/12^dice chance of getting a future clone which is like 65% at 12 dice and 40% at 6".

So to avoid having future you show up every scene, there's a mechanic that ties into your To-Do List to ensure that you cross paths with past you before the game is over.

And there you have it. I will probably try to playtest it tomorrow or into the weekend on suptg's IRC server.

However, I do have a question. Are the players going to just be Bill and Ted or will they be able to pretty much be anyone?

Could the "San Dimas High rules!" guy be one of the player characters? What about the myriad of other stereotypical 90's high school kids?

What about the historical figures that Bill and Ted picked up? Could you instead have Theodore Roosevelt, Samuel Clemens, Leonardo DaVinci, and Harriet Tubman all time traveling and being excellent?

Okay, so one or more of the PC have to be time travelers, or otherwise have access to a time machine. We wouldn't have a game without it.

Are the future-space-dudes and dudettes the only one with access to time travel, or can we have independent chrononauts from different time periods running around?

Assuming that the entire party wants to play historical figures or characters from the "present", how do they get their hands on a time machine anyway? How would you get the party together in the first place?

    >Saving Rock
This would be an awesome full on campaign hook.

And remember you could even make up characters to float in there occasionally. Like that one chick in Bogus that invented the thing I can't even begin to type out.

But for a starting. I don't know. Technically Bogus set it up like they bring a lot of historical figures to them to learn from and even go back in time. Maybe the players get stuck or somehow mess things up in the time circuit. So now they have to totally make things right most expeditiously.

Upon realizing they PCs have a knack for being excellent at righting stuff in the time circuit the most non-heinous High Council makes them troubleshooters.

    Cue Saving Rock N Roll.

As with everything, skies the limit. Thats just one idea for a small to a big hook. And the Radical Friends could be ANYONE. I would go for like the first movie, something that would be sorta comical. Lightness is obviously a centerpoint to the theme of the movies. Keep it rolling. Give them friends who would probably be a little comical, confusing, or even bumbling.

Damn you guys have some talent (and good lookin' ladies) out in Euroland.

Remember that movie about queen elizabeth?

It had a poster with a redheaded chick all decked out in plate. I was walking to a bar with a friend and when we saw it we decided that shit, this here movie has a chick in platemail and now we have to see it. So we went

Fucking ripoff, she only had the plate on for like 2 minutes

Be excellent to each other and party on dudes!
