As the first beams fire, we hear a roar of anger echo through our mind. We feel Dyles' mind tear at our own, scrabbling wildly against our control, but we do not falter. As the carrier's main batteries burn away life on the planet, the roar anger turns to pain, then to a pitiful scream. As the top layer of the planet's crust is superheated, its waters boiled, and its inhabitants evaporated, the scream slowly subsides until we strain to hear anything at all.
Then, finally, it is silent. The ships in orbit go adrift, and we feel their inhabitants reaching around for a mind to follow. We watch with cold disregard as the pilots convulse, tearing at their hair, their jaws, their eyes. They start to cripple themselves, and many inadvertently depressurize their craft. Slowly, the fleet start to go silent as well as the survivors appear to go comatose, still searching, reaching for a master.
Dyles is dead.
About two hours afterward, while we are pushing the last of Dyles' ground forces off the side of the platform (what? It's efficient!), a fleet of ships arrives out of warp travel, adrift and dead. We recognize many of the ships from the assault on Earth. Dyles' reinforcements, likely sent the moment we first arrived, and arriving so quickly, have yet failed to be any help at all.

(Another perfect stopping point! I love when that happens, even if we've clearly kept the thread going much longer than usual just to make it happen!) |
