Hey guys! Looks like the thread 404'd before the archive could copy the last post! Oh noes!

Fortunately, I have a mind like a steel trap. Unfortunately, several of the key pieces of that trap have been scavenged by wandering bandits.

So, basically, Dyles' shit was rocked over Earth, and less than a third of his remaining forces managed to get away. We took very few casualties, and we're big damn heroes. Defense Director Tyson is signalling us with thanks and praise, but also orders to get out of the Sol System and give him back control of the Titan Array so that he can reconnect with humanity.

Cyberbrate could try to hack the Array quickly and get us complete troop deployments for the entire UED, if we wanted. We already have a complete map of their holdings, but knowing how many ships they have and where wouldn't hurt.

(Scheduling: Monday or Tuesday next week? You decide!)

How likely can we leave no trace of hacking the Titan Array? By either hacking well of inflicting physical damage to cover it up?

There's a pretty good chance that we'll be able to do it without being detected. The main issue is that the Terrans are pretty hot for us to leave soon. We might not have enough time.

    >>18258448
Even if we get only a partial readout that will be better than nothing, start hacking and stall by moving everything to Titan, to make warping out easier obviously. It's not like we can have everything leave independently, that's hard. Side objective id learning how the hell they're mining gas giants.

    >>18258448
Let's not chance it. We know what holdings they have, and the current troop deployments could change when we're about to attack.

No need to chance detection for intel that'll get stale before we can use it.

    Why push our luck?

It'd be easier to back off, show some good faith, and after we're done mopping up the Dyles problem, we should simply throw some infestation spores in Sol's direction. It worked pretty well last time we tried (fifty threads ago, good christ!).

I say we comply with the Terrans' demands and instead focus on obliterating the Dyles legacy. Also, have Accountbrate send us a list of worlds for the next colonization sphere. It's time to grow our borders.

    Roll yourself 2d20, then.

It looks like the mining operations for most of the gas giants involves lots and lots of scoop ships. Jupiter's atmosphere is being collected by ships that are wasting almost everything they collect just to get out of its gravity well, but we suppose we can't judge the Terrans for doing something inefficient just to say prove that they can. They're not the ones who dragged a planet from system to system...

While broadcasting music we shouldn't know from a time period so far in the past that nobody alive even thinks, "hey, I've heard that somewhere," we depart.

Interestingly, this is almost the exact second that our cloaklord reaches the Dyles world we learned about from the space station that was refining an accretion disk, two or three threads ago.

What we find there is a world perfectly fitting the atmosphere type of all of Dyles' terraformed worlds. It has an incredibly complex and dense biosphere, as well as an orbital platform under construction. We notice several Confederate ships in use. The fleet here is substantial. The psionic energy in the system is very potent.

You know how Dyles managed to make an exploding ship take out a good portion of the fleet we sent to rescue the Protoss from Dyles by initiating warp while it was exploding?

What if we did that... but with NUCLEAR MISSLES? Even if they have point defenses, they wouldn't be able to track missiles in hyperspace. And we want the missiles to explode anyhow.

Kerrigan is setting up infested agents inside the UED. She still thinks we wasted a perfectly good opportunity to infest Earth, but that's alright. Anyway, she's up to date. It will be a tough fight, surely, but Warbrate is confident that we'll win. Considering how far it is from both UED space and the Koprulu Sector, Warbrate thinks we ought to gather our forces nearby with the heighliners before invading, just to save time.

I agree with Warbrate. Mass forces outside detection range.

We'll split our fleet into two groups. Space combat and landing. Almost all space-fight-capable assets engage on one side of the planet and draw the defenders' attention. Landing then advances on the OTHER side of the planet and assaults with no interference except from ground defence.

Perhaps we could spare a task force to ensure that no Dyles ships warps out of the system. Or if they do, the task force can quickly give chase and eliminate them.

Dyles' planet may have a lot of point defenses, but if we draw his attention away from our ground boarding force with our navy, perhaps we can allocate a mix of nuclear missiles and many more decoy missiles to assist the ground forces in clearing out problematic areas.

Also while he's dealing with our space forces, we may want to see if we can send out cheap cloaked units (i.e. scourge with cloaking harnesses or something or dropbservers) to probe where he has detectors present.

Then send in flights of cloaked nukes from the opposite of wherever our space fleet is duking it out and send in invisible death from above.

Also for our ground forces, we might want to do a classic Starcraft leap-frogging tactic. Clean up an LZ near a series of defendable mineral/vespene deposits, start a Hive Cluster there. Leave some garrison forces to protect the base, then steadily clear out stuff by doing a slow advance with long-ranged attack units (i.e. Guardians and Siege Tanks) backed up by an ungodly force of Zerg units. Also, send out detectors (observers or dropbservers) escorted by fast-attack air units (mantalisks or mutalisks) to see if they can quickly identify enemy detectors; if they're units like Science Vessels or such, crash Scourge against them or have our skirmishers try to quickly bring them down. If they're fortified structures, make note of them, and have the Long-ranged units slowly advance toward that direction.

After taking out detectors, send in waves of cloaked nukes to clear out the area.

Also, see if we can include any mass-splash damage units into our forces (i.e. Gausslisks with flamethrowers and such instead of the standard rapid-fire gauss gun). We're basically dealing with speedy infested terrans who, instead of blowing up, do absurd amounts of melee damage and any vehicles Dyles may have salvaged.

One "Let God Sort 'Em Out" special, coming right up!

Redirecting our Earth fleet, we use the heighliners to bring our weight to bear on the planet. For safety's sake, we gather about a day's Warp flight away. Far, far outside of the range of any sensors we know of. After the last load of Zerg arrive, we start on the Protoss, then the Terran ships. Once the heighliners are safely back in Zerg space, we set out.

Dyles' ships are caught completely off-guard. Our forces immediately begin to tear through them. Unfortunately, they form up into a defensive posture around the platform rather than venturing out to engage. This makes the ground insertion more difficult. Despite our cloaking devices, the crossfire is heavy, and several cloaklords, dropships, and shuttles are vaporized. We manage to land approximately a third of the ground forces we brought, and immediately begin to fight tooth and claw for a foothold on the platform. The resistance is uncannily strong, with Dyles' units either fully utilizing Terran warmachines, or barely covered against the vacuum and moving with near-blinding speed.

The ground battle is still rocky. Metabolic enhancements are barely keeping our Zerglings in the close quarters fights with Dyles' forces on the front line, and his artillery is already dug in better than ours. Gorn's battle lust is keeping the fight going, but it is loudly demanding assistance.

The battle above is going much better. We have managed to work Dyles' forces into a tight formation around the platform, and are whittling them away bit by bit. Warbrate's confidence wavers slightly as it remarks that an abnormal number of scourge are exploding without targets. That happens periodically, of course, but never this frequently.

We are sensing an increase in the level of psionic activity.

At first glance, we think what we're feeling is on the surface of the planet, but closer inspection makes it clear that it's coming from BEHIND the planet. One overlord skimming across Warp space around the planet later, we notice a Confederate battlecruiser in orbit of the other side of the planet. Even so, it takes a moment for us to notice it. It's like our overlord's composite eyes just slide past it whenever we try to focus. Just as we get a better look at it, its main cannon kills the unit.

Hmm. It's one of those old Confederate Battlecruisers, right? Probably has the one huge laser instead of an array of laser batteries and only a Yamato Cannon as a secondary weapon. While in Starcraft it wreaked havoc on smaller swarmy units due to being able to one-shot them, in reality these BCs probably have an atrocious accuracy against smaller units.

I'd say send Scouts/Wraiths/Mantalisks/Mutalisks to cripple it, and send out our thoroughly mechanical Observers to scout out where that psionic emanation is coming from. The Observer, being a pure machine, should be able to focus on the Battlecruiser without becoming all woozy; perhaps it may also be able to relay targeting information to our units to improve accuracy. Perhaps send in a Battlecruiser or two to snipe it with Yamato Cannon shots.

Warbrate decides against sending scourge, considering the trouble they're already having. So one squad of mantalisks and one of mutalisks break off from the battle, maneuver around the planet, and engage the battlecruiser.

Immediately, we worry that we've made a mistake. The minds of the mutalisks immediately feel strained. As the battlecruiser ineffectually attempts to shoot them down, our connection to the mantalisks resists any tampering...but the mutalisks' minds almost all at once disappear from our thoughts. From the perspective of the mantalisks, we watch them go limp for a moment, then twirl in air and begin attacking us.

Our mantalisks are able to destroy most of the mutalisks before the battlecruiser and rogue Zerg manage to finish them off.

Dyles' thoughts echo briefly in our mind:

"You've been experimenting with stealing my children, Wricking One. Turnabout IS fair play, after all."

    >Flip coin

    (Oh, you poor bastards.)

The psionic energies in the system crescendo madly as Dyles' forces all seem to pause. Warbrate begins directing forces to take advantage of the pause, but a scout doesn't respond. Then another. Then a carrier. We feel them twist and tear out of our thoughts, like teeth in a vise. We pull back, gripping at our units with all our might, but it is too late. Fully four out of every five Protoss ships under our command are gone. Warbrate, reacting with the precision we've come to expect from it, immediately presents us with two options: strike at Dyles' Terran ships while his mind is still distracted with stealing our ships, or turn to strike the Protoss ships before Dyles can adapt to piloting them. It doubts we have time for both.

Kerrigan's mind is stern as it argues for a third option: send everything we have around the planet. Destroy the battlecruiser before it can try that again. That might free our units or it might not, but to Kerrigan, the threat to our control is more important.

We must react quickly. What do we do?

The only sensible option is to move to prevent the theft of additional units, while preparing a secondary attack outside the system on the assumption that we will lose everything we have committed so far.

We hope that Dyles' sight is impaired during his little psionic outbursts, so that we can imagine that the first thing he sees through the eyes of the Protoss is empty space, and the first thing he sees through the eyes on the battlecruiser are our ships appearing en masse.

That's not likely, though. The battlecruiser is already turning to jump out of the system when we arrive. While fingers and claws are reaching for controls, we concentrate on where Dyles' voice came from in our mind and direct a psionic high five that way. The ship visibly shudders as its pilots are shaken by proxy. We go slightly overboard in disabling his engines: our fire shears the engines off the ship entirely. As the ship's various systems fail, breach, overload, or simply blare in alarm, we notice with confusion that the escape pods jettison. We have never seen that happen on a Dyles-controlled vessel before.

Most of the pods are destroyed in the explosion of the craft, but some are falling toward the planet's surface.

Should we just let them fall?

Before we started using the dice for everything, you guys were perpetually one big battle away from being completely annihilated. Now, you're a few steps away from conquering the whole galaxy. The dice are your friends much more often than they're your enemies.

I mean, I'll try to be fair if we switch back, but I do tend to play favorites with our villains. Kingston started out as just a paranoid guy on a science vessel, for instance.

(There's another consideration for the dice: they delight in forcing me into the situations I considered least probable)

A few diffident blasts from our battlecruisers later, the last escape pod explodes, and a searing roar of rage and defiance screams through our mind. It rings with such force that we immediately feel Dyles' body burning in the flames of the pod. The consciousness Dyles has become is powerful enough that it actually manages to survive, at least momentarily, the destruction of its physical vessel.

We feel its power reach out in every direction, searching, seeking a new mind to fill, a new psionic host. We feel it ravage through the system until it feels a connection it can manipulate. With horror, we watch as it fuses with that connection, or rather, connections.

Dyles' mind has survived its body, and taken up residence in the dense, interconnected ecological web of the planet below. It seems impossible, and it would be, if it were not for the fact that the amphibian parasite that comprises Dyles has infected every planet, tree, and animal of this planet. Everything here is host to it. Everything here is already a part of Dyles' greater entity, and has now become host to Dyles himself.

We never constructed one, but we could probably retrofit a battlecruiser or carrier into one relatively quickly. Maybe a day? Two? It still wouldn't have enough power to completely stratify elements, but pulling up a significant portion of one or more would be possible without recharge.

Well, technically he's just every plant or animal biomass that has enough junk to sustain a Dyles parasite. So I guess stuff like grass or moss wouldn't count on that front. Or tiny insects. But close enough, I suppose. On the bright side, this means that Dyles isn't necessarily more powerful, as it's his base consciousness but decentralized into all the living stuff on the planet. This may also quite possibly mean that he has to expend more power in maintaining his will and not just become subsumed in the mass of stuff he's infected.

I am reluctant to admit this, but we either need to risk cracking open the space-time continuum by sacrificing a heighliner to kill Dyles NOW, or we might risk him growing stronger later on. If we shuttle in a heighliner with our Psi-emitters cranked up to 11, we might be able to prevent him from controlling other units or quite possibly retake control of our subverted units.

So, wait, are you destroying a heighliner in an attempt to remove the planet from the fabric of reality entirely, or are you wiring a Psi Emitter into a heighliner in an attempt to block Dyles' psionic connections?

    >>18262160
    >>18262111
    >>18262136

In that case, if the heighliner is rigged to explode for sure, we should have our units ready to jump out when that happens.

Maybe keep the odd Observer in there to see what's really going on.
    >> Anonymous 03/09/12(Fri)03:00 No.18262233
    >>18262197

Hmm. The Psi-emitter basically just broadcasts psionic waves. If it was strong enough, perhaps we could drown out Dyles' own psionic control, "liberating" the creatures from the parasitic control so long as the frequency was maintained. It would be akin to drowning out Dyles' voice.... except that's all he is right now: an entirely psionic entity that exists in the minds of the parasitic creatures under his control.

If we slapped enough emitters onto the heighliners and hooked them up to said heighliners, then started broadcasting it like obnoxious neighbors' speakers at 3:00 AM in the morning right before that important meeting, it would essentially be screaming him out of existence.

I'd say yes to this plan, if what I've typed up is more or less correct.
    >> Cerebrate Anon 03/09/12(Fri)03:03 No.18262250
    >>18262233
It's certainly a possibility. It's also possible that Dyles' psionic connections are sufficiently different from ours that it will do nothing. Or something unexpected.

We don't know. We've never used the things like this.

Also, we've never run that kind of power through them. We aren't sure how the Emitters would take it.

    >(cont).

Combined with the fact that psi-emitters are rigged to reach across star systems by themselves by default, overcharging them could result in a fuckhueg wave of psionic resonance that's tuned into our consciousness. We'd either dominate Dyles, or simply disrupt his consciousness into nothingness, or at the very least make him work much harder to maintain any semblance of fine control of the units he has in the system.
