    PREVIOUSLY, ON METAHUMAN RENAISSANCE:
After speaking hurriedly with the Detectives and Professor Blackstone via the phone, Dan hitched a ride with Ashwood, then went home to sleep, after doing some Wizard stuff. Upon waking up the next day, he set out to exercise, learn to do knotwork, buy some new cheapo sunglasses, and ended up driving The Hammer in a Drive-Thru, before heading back to the college.

You stand in workshop 825, while Roxy checks out the hammer after you gave it a bit of a shakedown cruise. You and Johnny stand around drinking milkshakes, while you allow Johnny to scribble down a slightly de-contexted story of last night, for the paper.

Roxane announces that the machine is operating perfectly. But interjects that even with some modern parts, the fuel efficiency is terrible. It'll never run all the way to Vermont, so you'll need to either swap the power plant, or rent/borrow a vehicle of sufficient power to tow/carry it. Then she takes the last remaining milkshake.

You throw the catalog and the membership card Ashwood gave you on a near by workbench. "I made 500 bucks on the Museum thing last night." You say, to the room. "Anything of use?" Roxane takes it and flicks through. "Not much, actually. You'd be surprised." She pauses for a second to skim a page. "W&U mostly does gadgets, toys or trinkets, except for their mundane or surplus stuff. Plus Mr. Wayland and Mr. Utani are very careful about not being responsible for the legality, so we'd end up paying quite a bit for the permits and stamps to order any weapons on it." She looks up at you over the catalog. "Y'know, if you wanted to arm it. As a construction/excavation tool, other than maybe jury-rig some kind of interchangeable tool arms, or make the tow winch motorized, the only real thing is the power plant." You nod, and think about it. You never really intended the Hammer as a weapon, just something heavy enough to move shit in the Exclusion Zone.

"Oh, they're still selling my mouse-catchers! And the construction kits, like I asked!" Roxane observes, with joy. That's right, she actually makes all the money she needs for school and expenses off some patents she has.

"Well, tools aren't the problem. I can right up a cutting torch, maybe cludge you a manipulator arm, build a giant sledge hammer... not sure what you'll do with a giant drill, though. You're not getting through crystaline bunker doors and walls with a drill." She puts the catalog down, and turns around, to look at the Hammer, putting a hand on her chin while she thinks. "Now, for power, with 500, I could probably switch this wholly over to electric. Normally that would call for microfusion, or one of those portable nuclear reactors, but I checked the system, and with some modifications, I can run it on an electric engine. We'll pull the engine block and sell that, and I can use that to replace it with a smaller electrical engine, and then we could use the cash to buy some high-storage batteries, and make the modifications to the existing systems to run on electric." She turns around to face you. "Not counting deliver time, that'll be a couple days, though. As it is, you could probably make a trip to Vermont now, if you had a truck to hook this to, and the right directions."

Johnny shakes his head. "Yeah, but my leg still isn't fit to stand up in that thing for long periods of time unassisted." He turns to you. "The Doctors said I should start putting my weight on it in a couple days, y'know, try and work to get back some of the muscle mass that was lost. Once I start doing that, operating the pedals should be fine." You nod. Well, its not like you could have set out right away anyway. You'll need something to haul the stuff back here to claim the salvage on it. Also, you don't have any idea how to get to the Exclusion Zone from here.

We should also put a tow hitch on there. We can probably tow around a light cart with a locking lid that we could put cargo in. Anyway, let's see if anyone wants to do anything right now. If not, let's try to find the parkour gang and go running downtown. We'll take the metro when we try to find them, rather than running, so that we can work on our shoe lace while we're in-transit.

It's the futurepresent. You can find the requisite high-density storage of about the right size of a car battery which will run for like a month straight. They're really heavy comparatively, but you won't have the whole engine block weight on it, so the over-all mass and weight should even out.

You could probably rig something to produce a constant electrical charge, but I don't think Dan knows enough about magic OR electrical engineering to build something that was both strong enough and not too strong. Like, he could make something like a joy buzzer, or like a bolt of lighting, but getting the precise amount of power output would be a lot trickier.

Also, wouldn't running all that power through a mundane lump of metal cause it to deteriorate?

This is a good plan, but probably no way in hell Dan has this idea on his own.

Still doesn't solve the power disparity problem.

Also, why do you guys need magic battery rechargers for? You HAVE batteries. If you want to make the Power Armor run on electricity, requiring less frequent fuel ups (And also meaning it can make it to Vermont on its own, probably. Still be a little slow) you need to convert the engine to electric, and preferably purchase some higher capacity storage batteries.

It has an external speaker, so you can talk to people outside, with out having to open the little slit and yell out it. Or open the secure cockpit hatch. It's moderately loud, so you can be heard in the middle of a battlefield.

It is Air Conditioned yes. It actually has a pretty good air seal if the cockpit is closed and so is the little sliding door in the front. It WAS built during the Cold War after all.

As for making it go faster taking out the old engine block and slimming it down for an electrical system will improve that some. As will Roxane's tuning of the system to make it electric. But you're not going to get much more than a 40-45 mph wheel speed on level ground. It just isn't made to go fast.

Theoretically. I mean, it's already HAR 5, equivalent to modern heavy tanks in terms of armor. So you wouldn't be adding to the mundane armor, but you could take your sharpie and scribble some lines that give it protection from magic. Some abilities do have the "Non-Physical" extra, which means they bypass normal defenses like armor.

Dan was hit with some Necrotic Lightning last night like that, he still has the 2 Killing damage in the torso from it.

You also make a mental note to buy Roxane something nice as a sort of repayment for all the work she's doing. Not that she seems to mind.

You rub the sore spot on your chest when you were hit with lightning last night. Its hard to tell since you glow in that area, but you're pretty sure your skin looks extensively bruised in that area. "I don't suppose anyone knows of a way I can get a quick heal? I'm not sure mundane medicine can handle this one." Johnny shrugs. He hangs out with Journalism majors and those taking related classes. Roxane puts a finger on her chin and thinks for some percentile of a second. "I took an anatomy class with a girl trying to get into the Medical School once, who was an actual Psychic Surgeon. Family ability, goes way back. Supposedly its actually really painful though." "Eugh," You say. "I didn't get that banged up. It's not like I was literally struck by lightning." At worst, they packed in some shitty booby traps as they left, if they were real vindictive. (2x7 on Contacts check)

"Hello, Dan. You're lucky you caught me, I was about to meet with my advisor about summer classes." You make some pleastantries, then get to the heart of the matter. "Enchanting materials? Yes, the club has some. Actually, the college itself does to, but those are reserved for students to use as part of classes. Hence why we have our own supply." She pauses for breath.

"What do you want to enchant? We have a couple of things we use all the time." "A breast plate." You say, simply. "Hrm, usually I would say to forge it. But I doubt you have the time or skill to just crank one out." "It's Cyrean, so no." You respond. "Alright then," She says, unfazed "We have some simple stuff. Our Enchanting oil or resin will probably work, Sunshine makes it for us. Nasty stuff, though. Sticky, and smells like the sap of 1000 trees. Combine it with the incense you'll be burning for the ritual part, and whatever room you do this in will smell for a week. Easiest to apply, though, and we have plenty. We also have some alchemically pure silver, but that needs to be very hot and carefully applied." You frown, thinking. "Anything I can just draw with? That doesn't involve molten metal?" You hear a shifting sound over the line, and you think Jeanne shook her head before catching on. "No, not currently. Sunshine does this thing with beeswax to make a kind of 'bee chalk' but I don't think we have any more of that." She pauses. "Anyway, swing into room 116 in the building, and I'll have Huan leave the stuff out for you. I have an appointment to keep." She makes her goodbyes.

I have no brilliant plan, which is why I wanted to bring it up for discussion.

    I would began by doing some basic legwork (though if the detectives are competent they should have already done this). Such as;
    - checking with any arithomancy(sp?) department of the university and try and match students to her description
    - her particular type of magic seems kind of unique/rare, is there any way we can use our magic to try and detect or seek out similar magic? I imagine wherever she is hiding must stink like the stuff, especially if she has been performing any rituals of her own.
    - It also sounds like she's been working hard to improve her magic (since the last time we fought her) so she's probably accessed material related to her field, whether that is other magical artificats or research material to develop new spells. If we can find where she found this material we might be able to track her.

I don't want to come across as a dick, I can definitely see the benefit of preparing our own magical protections, but we are on a timeline and I would much rather fight her on our terms instead of letting her decide the time and place again.

Dan has known magic for less than 24 hours. Huge area sweeps for magic are outside of his potential right now. You could magesight and compare, but you'd need to narrow your area first.

Both good points. I was imagining something along the lines of a Geiger counter. The closer we are to a source of arithomancy the stronger/faster it clicks. Actually, don't we have that parapsychometer? Can we perhaps make a minor magical modification to it that temporarily makes it only zone in on arithomancy?

Good point about the police, we have been cordial so far and don't want to mess that up. I can't help but feel that for something this big, any information we can get them would be appreciated. Perhaps not the university staff but students are probably more likely to talk to us then the police.

Instead of just entering the library, you decide to make a quick detour, and pop into a room apparently the Evoker's Club use as a permanent room. You enter to find Huan there, now in casual clothes. He gives you a slight bow as you enter. "Daniel. A pleasure to see you again. Jeanne sent me a text message saying you wished to do some enchanting?" You nod. "Yeah." Huan is a demon-hunter, or at least a former one, so you decide to give it to him straight. He frowns ever so slightly. "Yes, a distressing situation. But, not unheard of in our circles. You must learn to truly weight the significance of events, else you'll find yourself very stressed by the times we are close to very bad things happening." You nod again, solemnly.

"Also, found the enchanting board. If you can fit your item on the table, it has an appropriate array engraved on it already, and candles. No need for incense." You smile gratefully, "Thanks." He points at the various and sundry containers on the table. "For room temperature, we have some powdered bear claw, deer antler and eagle talon, then Enchanting resin, of course, and this," He holds up a large bottle of Elmer's glue. You raise an eyebrow. "I is not actually glue. This is something Jeanne and Anya made once, and refuse to disclose the ingredients. But apparently it is very adhesive, and they used the glue bottle because it does not bond to it." You do not like the sound of that stuff. "I also have the alchemical silver, if you need it, but you'll need to find a spot sufficient to heat and pour it. In the fridge back there is an alchemical paste Sunshine made from walrus fat, also. But I do not recommend it." You do not like the sound of that either.

Good thought, but the Parapsychometer is not magical itself, but Anachrotech (I.E. it is an Anachronism, a catch all term for various -punk style tech which existed at a time before it was widely pervasive or practical) Modifying it to do magical things would take a lot of research.

You walk over to the table, and pick up the power made from various animal parts, and shake it a little. "Is this stuff legal?" Huan just shrugs. You walk over to the enchanting board, a five sided table with a magic array etched into the surface, filled in with white paint, or something. Five candles are arrayed at the "top" of the table. You unhook your breastplate, pull off your shirt, then pop it off, and lay it back on the table after closing it back up. Huan hands you a white cloth. "Here, use this to rub the powder in, then work the enchantment. At least, this is how I have seen the others do it. The temple has a different process." You nod, set the cloth aside, uncap the powder, then set it next to you. You carefully place the cloth in the powder, suffusing it with the material, and start rubbing it into the armor.

(Clutch time, guys. Here are a couple solutions to Enchant your armor.

-You can reinforce the existing armor, spending one WP and add an additional HAR to the armor. This does nothing on the magic end, and you only have to roll Occult to see if you do it right.
-You can reinforce the armor against magical assault. Drop 1 WP on a check, and any magical attacks that hit the torso region, Non-Physical or no, will be reduced by the amount equal to the greatest width you roll on an Occult check
-You can drop 3 WP to create an anti-magic armor. All spells that touch the armor, offensive or no, will simply be cancelled out. Period. However, any spells you weave which interact with the armor will also be cancelled. )

(WP Spent! Relationship Invoked! Your Enchanting has risen to 32!)

(3x4 is the greatest width set on the enchantment, so you'll knock three dice off any magic attacks on your torso)

You spend maybe 20-30 minutes rubbing every inch of the armor with the powder, making sure to even get on the inside. Then you center it on the array as best you can, and light each of the five candles in turn, then press both your hands on the table so you're touching the array with all ten fingers, and concentrate. You scrunch up your eyes for a second, the candles flare and... nothing.

Huh, that wasn't so exciting. You examine your armor carefully. Looks the same, though a bit shinier, and the scratch marks from the bullets seem to have come out well. Wait a second. You narrow your eyes, trying to focus harder. You think you see a faint green outline around where your armor should stop, a faint aura. Neato.

    RESEARCH.

To the library! You bid Huan goodbye, and head over to the library, showing your pass to the dour librarians. There are actually a handful of students in here, all of them attempting to look sufficiently mystical. Including one girl who can't be older than 19 or 20, draped in new-age crystal shit.

But no time for all that. You have books to find. And read.

    (3x5 on Research check)

In no time at all, you've found through some books on the various "school" or disciplines of magic. Specifically, you track down some references to two kinds magics. The first, oddly enough, is Necromancy. Since it has to do with the manipulation of the quintessence, the life-force, you can use it for healing properties. But most mentions of this note that it isn't the cleanest or prettiest method of healing. Another is an idea which is modern, a lumping of various healing magics together into a "Restoration" school, which is pretty much a broad heading for all manners of healing magic.

Plus, learning necromancy would give us a serious advantage against the undead that I'm betting Restoration wouldn't. Also, most importantly, it would score us massive credit with Veritas to pursue this awesome knowledge opportunity like this.

I feel like Dan has been doing more what's practical as his decision basis, and Necromancy seems to line up with that in this situation.

We have a literal master of the craft offering to teach one, and we'd probably have to self teach the other. I say we go for the necromancy.

We have enough problems dealing with the negative emotions of being a meta powered by ALIEN technology, from a race of ALIENS that tried to invade earth. No need to add 'potentially evil necromancer' on top of that.

You decide the utility applications of Necromancy are more worth it. Restoration has some broad avenues of healing, but it is all just healing. Besides, you can learn Necromancy much quicker. If you can get a hold of Ashwood.

You go back into your phone's history. And locate his number. You dial him up. "Yes?" He answers, simply. "Ashwood? It's me, Dan. I want to call in my favor." You pause for effect. "I want to talk with the Skull." Ashwood sighs. "Alright, but don't let him talk your ear off. He's very chatty as a skull, I'll have to know. I'd recommend keeping a mallet or hammer handy." Ashwood pauses for a second, and you can hear at least one person in the background. "Come by the penthouse for lunch. Afterword, you can chat with him all you like." Huh, maybe there is a such thing as a free lunch.

Don't know what you'll get out of it other than another member of the legion of Dan. And another member when later vague but canonical events result in the resurrection of the League as the League of Earth, with a small-unit cell based structure, as opposed to a big centralized group.

Okay, so Bertha (that is her first name) is genetic experiment created by tinkering with her DNA at the early stages, and mixing in some Wolf DNA, in addition to some other stuff. She has three powers, one is the Inhuman Stats permission, which allows her up to 8 native (So no hard or wiggle dice) in Sense, but her Command can't be more than 3.

An other is a Permanent, Self, Useful Miracle that works by playing with her cell division and regeneration. Basically, she heals two damage to all location every combat round (2hd in the power). So the only way to permanently damage her is to use something with the disintegrate extra, or to completely fill both her head and torso with Killing, rendering her deader than dead. Keeping in mind she's healing a lot each turn.

She also had some natural weapons you didn't find out about, in the form of her claws. Switches her Brawl damage from shock to killing without needing to have more than human Body stat.

She also has an Intrinsic allergy, to strong smells, which can render her unconscious, and by-passes the healing factor.

So she's basically hard-wired to be a beta or epsilon, with her Command so low and her capacity for punishment? I'm advocating Dan just let her go, but I, personally, would love having her for a nice little submissive.

Command is meant to represent force of personality and leadership potential. According to the handy table in my copy of WT, 3d in Command is "You’re charismatic and graceful under pressure." IE, slightly above average. 5d is Your presence commands attention and respect, for some comparison.

So basically yeah, they engineered her for loyalty, and not to be a leader of men. The idea was to create a durable reconnaissance soldier, and if it panned out, to go to "mass production". Since the USSR fell when she was about six, they didn't get to that stage.

So, just to get this covered. Our armor's HAR blocks damage, but does nothing to sets or pools. Its enchantment removes 3d from any magical pool shot at us, but doesn't actually do anything to sets. If we use barrier, it acts as gobble dice against any attack directed at us. Is that basically everything? Is that correct?

Ah good, this is still here. I can actually answer some questions for once.

    >>18198255

No, LAR reduces damage. HAR explicitly reduces the width of the attackers roll by the amount of its rating (Which is the *other* reason why people with more than HAR 1 is rare). The spell resisting enchantment works the same way, reducing the width of any roll that hits it by 3 (Because you got a 3 width on the roll. Doing this same enchantment again may result in more or less protection) the die pool penalty sounds cool, and I may keep that in mind for later shenanigans, but doesn't make sense for the armor, since it only applies to the Torso (Hit Location 7-9). The Barrier has the Interference extra. Interference dice remove dice of equal or lower height from the attacker's set or sets. So if you roll 2x10, you can remove any two dice the attacker rolls against you.

    >>18201905

He was Tesla. Y'know those crazy inventions he said he made? He totally did. Like the death ray. But his works were very impractical to reproduce, especially if you were not Nikola Tesla, so after he died the US Government just seized all his notes and put them in some drawers.
