I can cite at least a hundred medieval swordblades from 800AD to 1300 with inscriptions and inlay on the blade.

I am so going to make this an actual sword in my Earthdawn game. A magical sword that doesn't accept just any kind of wielder, nor just any kind of intended usage of its use.
