    Steal something historical:

On the crossguard, Hebrew in Latin script surrounded by a floral pattern:
    >Con citomon Eeve Sedalai Ebrehel
    >Fervent faith incite the names of God: Sedalai and Ebrehel

On the other side of the crossguard:
    >Quicumque hec nomina Dei secum tu lerit nullum periculum ei omnino nocebit
    >Whoever will carry these names of God with him, no danger will harm him

On the pommel the Greek letters Alpha and Omega with a cross between them, each letter circled by half the following inscription:
    >Haec figura valet ad amorem regum / et principum iras iudicum
    >This sign rouses the love of kings and princes, the wrath of judges

On the narrow side of the grip there are two small silver plates inscribed with:
    >Iste est gladius (name, title)
    >This is the sword of Somedude Lord of Someplace
    and
    >cum quo ei Dominus Salvator Omnipotens Salvator auxilietur adversus partes amen

    Why is the sword legendary?

    What made it so renowned?

Do you know what that inscription on Sting says? According to the Lord of the Rings Wiki:

    >"Sting is my name; I am the spider's bane"

Sting as it appears in the upcoming Hobbit movies isn't inscribed with anything at all. Bilbo has the knife inscribed between the two films.

    Do something like that.

First of all, make sure that the text is oriented so that "up" is away from the blade, facing the pommel. Put it reasonably close to the hilt, maybe even ON the hilt if you want the blade to be all pristine or something.

"He who can read the words upon this sword, is already a dead man."

Not that weirded out, I mean if you do slide a blade over a given material it will make a metallic sound as it rings, its just that they decide to go with the one people all expect to hear. Though I have to say that the metallic sound a blade will make in such a situation may not really be loud enough to be heard most of the time.

Also though I tend to prefer imagining that they got the sound right, but the material of the scabbard wrong.

In hoarfrost born of winter's ire,
From dead of heart and fading fire,
For skies' last light to ever sing,
And in the rising storm to ring,

Lay my head in forgotten rest,
Curse my name, shame my crest,
But carry far my last appeal:
My final blade, my finest steel.

"It is far easier to draw a blade than to sheath it."

The inscription could even be an engraving of an image, rather than words. I once had a katana in a WoD game that I named "Eclipse." It was engraved on one side of the blade with silver in the the shape of the moon, and on the other side in gold in the shape of the sun. Two kinds of eclipses, two kinds of metal to deal with any supernatural creature (my character was a hunter of vampires, werewolves, mokole mbembe, zombies, ghosts, demons, etc.).

So what if the sign changed every time the user draws it, depending on the situation? You as a DM should write up quite a few situational things, and tell your player what the sword says. When, for example it is drawn for no reason, it says "my blade shall not sing in vain", etc.

    >Contrary to fantasy books and movies, sword inscriptions were typically on the hilt and not the blade.

I can cite at least a hundred medieval swordblades from 800AD to 1300 with inscriptions and inlay on the blade.

I can cite perhaps a dozen with inscriptions on the hilt, and most of those are from the 15th Century, when fullered blades were unfashionable.

This: "Belonging to King Goujian of Yue, for his personal use."

It also has a counterpart in a spear wielded by the original wielder's archrival, with the inscription: "Belonging to King Fuchai of Wu, for his personal use."

They are both around 4000 years old, and still sharp.

    And also real weapons.

I am so going to make this an actual sword in my Earthdawn game. A magical sword that doesn't accept just any kind of wielder, nor just any kind of intended usage of its use. It's also absolutely perfect given how you need to learn and or discover swords' pasts/history and nature before being able to unlock their greater power.
With this, the sword can judge the wielder as the wielder judge the sword as they learn more about eachother.
