    108 KB Kobold Sorcerer Quest Chapter 8 VKO !qw2cdBTZAc 02/22/12(Wed)20:59 No.18060942
The voice speaks after a moment. <<It all comes down to a certain question. If you're willing to accept where the true origin of life on this world lies.>>

You think for a while. But, you see no alternative to your curiosity. "Alright, I'll bite. What do I have to lose?"

<<Only your ignorance.>> The original voice says, and you see the blue sky darken, the blue-violet of the night sky giving way to stars, and constellations among them.

"What am I supposed to be seeing?" You ask the voice, staring up into the painful pinpricks of light.

<<Up there.>> The voice trails off, emptily.

    "What?" You say, looking around.

<<Your ancestors came from up there.>>

"...I'm sorry; I'm not quite sure- ...From the Astral Sea? My ancestors were travellers of the Astral Sea?" You ask the voice.

<<I'm afraid your race's cosmology may be different than my charts.>> The voice responds. <<Regardless, the environment at the border of this planet's sky is known as the Aether in my records. That is where your ancestors, the Vorlat, come from.>>

The dark sky around you coils with a purplish light, the black screen punctuated by several swirling clouds of gas, burning suns, and round, colored spheres.

<<You might say they are creationary forces in the universe, but they are no where near gods. They are the direct ancestors of dragons. Your blood does not contain any recent ancestors, however. Only a single vorlat's blood.>>

<<Please stop me if you need to as a question.>>

"Exactly how far back is this ancestor of mine? I assume this is the source of my sorcerer powers..." You say to the voice.

    <<Nearly immediate.>> The voice responds.

You look out at the screen. "How did they distance themselves from the dragons? Hells, what did these ancestors even look like?"

You see an image of a bluish-violet creature, with a snake-like body and sail-like, gossamer wings. Countless thin springy spines rise and fall along its body. Its eyes are almost insectile, the yellow of the pupil a bit lighter than the yellow green of the eye.

You recognize it from the ship you investigated to find Tayn. (http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/14695945/)

There's a good reason for that.

Like a significant percentage of the kobold population in the Crystal Caverns, you were raised in government sponsored housing, along with Yuune. The two of you aren't blood relatives, at least to your knowledge.

In some cases, the birth parents leave a message or whatnot for their child. You weren't so lucky. Yuune's parents were both taken during an earlier war with the dwarves. Considering the kobold societal structure, even those without guardians are looked after by one kobold or another until they're educated enough to break into the workforce.

<<The information will take some time to decipher. Your brain has to be used as the translation for the genetic memory. Otherwise it's a bunch of jumbled images.>>

<<As far as travel throughout the stars, your ancestors mainly traveled through their own propulsion methods, whether through manipulation of energy or the harnessing of cosmic forces.>> The voice pauses. <<As far as travel... I'm afraid my records contain nothing on the subject of building such vehicles, let alone other scientific information on the subject.>>

<<However,>> The voice begins again after a moment's delay. <<This system is becoming more operational as time goes on. Perhaps it is stored in another datapoint.>>

"Fair enough." You glare out into the stars, clenching your fists. "This sheds light on a lot of things, but I only understand my past a little bit more. How can I utilize what I've learned here to win my people's war?"

    <<Wait.>>

You see the screen starting to flash with green lines, and rough images.

"-do you expect to win this war? Arkaviss?"

The voice comes crackling through. You feel the rage in your head stretching it. You grunt in pain as the feeling elicits a sharp stab in between your eyes.

"We can't expect this to go easily. They outnumber us a fair margin." You hear a more youthful, echoing voice, almost like it was many voices speaking at once.

The picture comes in. You see a red-skinned creature, with a serpentine neck, a reptilian head, and six bright green eyes going down his long face. His back is heavy with red spines and feathery strands of hair. It stands like a dragon, with long, flat wings folded down its back, the wings being crimson as well as the creature's skin. Its lengthy tail seemed to writhe idly, and the green spines at the end showed that it too could bring ruin.

"We're going to ensure that our numbers can't be outdone. We'll hit and run." You hear the same voice continue. The dragon-like creature opens its mouth, and a ball of amber flame drifts out, extinguishing itself.

"What if they catch us? Then what?" The beast asks.

"Listen, I'm trying." You see your point of view sigh. The sound has an odd echo to it.

"Try harder." The other vorlat says, his wings snapping to their unfurled position. You can feel the heat radiating from the bottom side of his wings as they remain nearly motionless, and he takes off, gliding into the gathering hall's main chamber.

You can see a number of glimmering stone statues in the hall, a great room with a clear ceiling and a few other vorlat there as well. You can see the red one you spoke with earlier landing nearby one of the statues of a cube tilted on a corner. Vorlat of various other kinds are in the room as well, and you can tell from the memory that this is a rare occurrence indeed. Your eyes seem to zoom in on them quite quickly, and you can see your vision temporarily split as the other pairs of eyes begin to independently track images. It becomes almost too much when you hear a ringing sound from the low center of the stadium-like construction.

A gray-scaled vorlat, whose body seems smaller than most of the others here, stands on a small raised platform, its dark eyes moving across the crowd of vorlat. "This war has not been kind to us. Many of our comrades have fallen already by the hand of human, elleth... Even the vemar have turned on us."

The crowd is physically silent, but you can hear a rapport of psychic messages go out at that. The dark-scaled vorlat resumes speaking, and the mental voices quiet.

"We cannot run. Only my people, with our great speed and camoflage, stand any chance at all of evading capture forever. Even the mighty sun vorlat have been ousted from their homes by mages." He looks over at the vorlat you were speaking to just a moment ago. "They cannot survive forever without a sun, just as we cannot survive without each other."

It is a memory, and not yours either. You're watching it on the BEEG SCREEN!

"How will we keep them from blowing through our number, like they have before?" A green-scaled vorlat dotted with short spikes snarls from his high spot across the chamber.

You feel tension form in the air like a thick smoke of uncertainty. As a large image forms above the gray-scaled vorlat, you feel the emotions of the others in the room begin to calm.

"This is the Chrysalis Nebula. With the large number of stars in it, most aetherships should have a hard time maneuvering in it."

"As should those of us who don't live in stars!" The same green vorlat responds.

"With the void, nebula and star vorlat we have, we can reshape the nebula to serve our purposes." The vorlat's black eyes lock with the green vorlat, the latter's hackles rising along with the spines across his body. "Please do not be upset. I have formulated a plan, but you keep interr-"

"And what of the other void vorlat? They ran when Kyrikros began hunting us. Where are they now when we could use them the most?" The vorlat hisses, the sound audible to you despite the distance between you.

"My fellows did not make the decision to aid you. That is their prerogative." The vorlat answers.

You hear the words fading from the air as a black vorlat with small whitish spots on his hide of chitinous scales opens his mouth, the gray rings at the edge of his compound eyes seeming to pulse as it opened wider and wider, the toothless maw snapping shut with a crack. The sound reverberates throughout the silent room.

"You would blame us for this?" The black vorlat says, pointing up at the green vorlat with a foreclaw. "Do you even know WHY they fled, you miserable little spawn?"

"WHAT?" The green-hided vorlat lunges with surprising speed over the edge of the level of the meeting hall he finds himself on, but soon halts, suspended in midair.

"Act like a spawn and I shall treat you as one." The vorlat on the ground makes a simple motion with two thick black antennae that sprout from its brow, and the air-bound vorlat is contained within a transluscent egg. A number of the vorlat let loose a chittering noise, which can mean they are either amused or angry. They leave this intentionally vague to aid in bluffing. You note a number of vorlat begin squaring off, small bursts of elements coiling from their mouths like anxious serpents.

"Perhaps had not so many of my ancestors been slaughtered during the Hollow Years, that may have allowed us to stay. Instead, we must uphold the first code, and preserve our race's future." The black-scaled vorlat says, flinging the green-scaled one back onto his platform. "Do try to keep in mind that we are here to help you, brethren."

The green-hided vorlat says nothing, and turns away. A number of the others turn from their fights as well.

"Infighting, hm? I should be ready to prevent that kind of conflict..." You say, watching the screen intently.

"We should formulate battle plans based on the 83 codexes." The gray-scaled vorlat says, and the green-scaled one's egg-shaped framing dissipates as he speaks.

"They will be using the same! Our plans will be obvious if we do! Let's use the new battle strategies formed by Arkaviss's Resistance!" He points up at you.

"My what now?" You hear yourself whisper.

"Yes, how is that going, apprentice?" You hear the black-scaled vorlat say to you, his eyes turning almost completely gray as the exterior of the iris moves in, his pupil a single tiny black dot.

"It is proceeding. We have not lost any conflicts, but we haven't had a breakthrough either." You say to the group. "Currently, we're advancing through the Ramas system."

"Can we lure them there," The black-scaled vorlat points to the image of the Chrysalis Nebula, "From there?"

"We can try." You say to them. "If we can get them to chase us that far, we'll need something big."

"Like destroying a station." The red-hided vorlat you spoke to earlier says, looking out over the congregation from his high seat. "Harath Station."

Well, let's see. You are a kobold, the head magistrate of the most advanced kobold society in the underworld, the Crystal Caverns. In the past, you've shaken off assassination attempts, conspiracies, and murderous gangs. You've even managed to get some work done in the meantime. Your sorcerous talents serve you well in the pursuit of anything to combat the troglodyte empire that is looming over your people's heads.

Recently, you've learned of the strange magical devices known as henges. You are currently near one, fending off a number of strange glass insects.

If you'd like to read some of the essentials, I'd recommend the first few threads up to part 6, and then a bit of back-reading from here. A few chapters are lost, but the occurrences in them weren't completely essential to the story. However, don't be compelled to read anything! You can often be at your most honest when you jump right into something.

You light up a number of the lizards with a wall of flames, illuminating them in the black. You see the insects turn, and unleash a prismatic spray into them. The excellent prismatic spray elicits a web of yellow crackling beams that strikes each of the crystalline menaces once by one, melting them in midair. You marvel at how this spell always seems to get it right. The smoking steel pins, their purpose as focus and conductor for the spell's electric devastation served, fall to the ground like gray pine needles.

You rush over the bush that had been aiding you as cover, ricocheting a lightning bolt off a nearby tree. The new angle skewers five or six in the bolt instead of two or three.

A short rush later, and you're back at the reinforced position. No insects seem to be in the sky.

Motion for Tayn. "Tayn, help me with a brief scrying spell. Time is of the essence, and we don't have enough time for me to conduct the ritual by myself."

We're searching for encroaching enemies that we can't readily see; mainly from our flanks and our rear.

"Combat's in my blood; even being a magistrate, I always find myself with the armed forces." You peek back outside the cover, seeing dark silhouettes on a distant hill. Your fist crackles with power. "Our troubles aren't done yet, though."

You point to Tayn. "Tayn, help me with a brief scrying spell. Time is of the essence, and we don't have enough time for me to conduct the ritual by myself."

"Alright. What's the target?" He asks, rubbing his head.

"There they are." Tayn points over to the hill. "Crouched down, like cats."

You see the dynavik professor lining up a shot at them from behind his spot near one of the stone blocks.

"Tayn; we need to check around our flanks and sides." You say to him.

"Right. Second casting ho." Tayn responds, closing his eyes once again.

The shapes atop the hill begin circling around.

"Oh, if only they'd been given a form not capable of rudimentary communication." Dr. Van Skewer mentions from his spot leaning up against one of the pillars. "Now they seem to be moving to a flanking position."

"They're joining others that were already there." Tayn mentions, ending the spell and looking over at you sympathetically. "We're surrounded."

"Bollocks!" Van Skewer shouts, surprising you. You think he was supposed to be cursing in anger from his rapid breathing and the fact that an impressive number of his teeth are showing, but the foreign phrase just seemed like kind of a let-down. "Bloody raptors think they're so bloody clever! I'll show 'em how clever they are. With three bullets through the hale and pace." Van Skewer's raptor-like visage glares murder at one corner of the mountain to one side of you, where the raptors have no doubt gathered.

You are once again underwhelmed at what he has to say. The raptors seem to be biding their time.

What do we have in ways of making an area uninhabitable? Miasma of some sort? Perhaps scorching the ground will suffice. Either way, we need to corner ourselves off and force them to attack solely from our front.

    There is one way.

You breathe in, concentrating on a spell rarely used by anyone. You bring up a firey cloud of smoke some distance down the west ridge, opposite the one Van Skewer is overseeing. The cloud begins slowly tumbling down, its lit embers glowing orange in the dark night air. Countless slit eyes stare back at you as the cloud comes down the hill, revealing their position.

You look behind you. In the center of the pillars, there seems to be some light from the moon. You are fairly visible.

"Well then. Time to make this interesting." You say, transforming a line of the ground down the hillside and into the line of raptors into mud. Most struggle in the mud, with a few leaping off of the weakening ground in time. You do this again on the opposite side, fencing them in with diagonal edges to the ends of both spell's areas.

"I bet you're good at jumping. But I can make that option less appealing." You say, wrapping two walls of flame on either diagonal line of the mud's area, the flames pointing outwards. The mud in that outer area bakes and begins to smolder. The raptor-like creatures seem to understand the danger of the heat, and press upwards, towards the cloud.

Our gunners should be shooting anyone who posses a direct threat to us. In the meantime, start firing off fireballs and charring their main force.

"Ready the line! Prioritize those with range! I'll handle the mass!" You say, throwing fireballs down into the main group already heading towards you. The makeshift group of soldiers lines up near opposite sides of the henge and opens fire. The raptors on your side are surprisingly, barely injured. They continue climbing through the cloud of burning embers.

"I knew there was a reason I never used that spell." You mutter as you spray down the hill with lightning bolt after lightning bolt.

The saurian horde seems unabated. You watch as your elemental spells bounce off of the lead one unabated.

"Impossible!" You say, readying a volley of freezing missiles as the raptors continue their uphill charge straight through your incendiary cloud. The blast stops a few that you focus heavily on. Either they're incredibly tough or they're resisting some of the elements of your magic. You never did see your lightning bolt bring any down, but you were running at the time.

Elemental magic might not be the right choice, then. Perhaps something more physical? Force or force-propelled terrain will hopefully fair better.

You cut off the attacking force from the west with a transparent wall of force. The raptors seem confused as their advance halts.

"Could use some help!" Van Skewer shouts, and on his side you see a few soldiers rush over to help him.

"There, seems to have been stopped rather quickly." He says after another volley, looking at your side. "Now to just-"

"Wait." Tayn says, looking over the hill in front. "No. When did they..."

He can only point as the majority of the raptors pour over the hillside.

"Mother of Kurtulmak, how many men did you have on your crew, Skewer?" You ask the saurian gentleman.

"Only about 30." He answers. You check each side. Ten... And ten.

"Damn. I'll get started on 'em to buy you some time." Tayn says, unleashing a wave of force down the hillside. It moves some, but not all, but does cause them to give pause.

"Skewer, guard my comrades, won't you?" You ask him, stepping out front of the henge. "Come, depraved devils! I will show you the depths of my wrath!" You announce, the ground in front of you being cleaved in twain. Some of the raptors fall into the crevice, the rest continuing a mad rush up the hill.

Then, they suddenly turn away. The ones you have headed off with a wall of force begin rushing back down the hill, leaping over the lines of mud in the ground as they come to them.

Soon, all the raptors are gone.

And then you hear the buzzing.

The insects flow endlessly over the hill, unleashing a hail of glass needles. You barely manage to get behind one of the henge's stone pillars before the hail of glass impacts, whitening a huge spot on the stone. It is a thunderous sound, thousands of tiny snaps impacting at once and ricocheting. but none of them breaking.

After the cacophony has ended, you check out front. None of the needles in the ground are broken. The insects buzz out front.

"Good, I wanted to fight a war on two fronts." You sigh, looking out at the swarm circling in the distance.

"I've had enough shenanigans for one day..." You say, readying a teleportation spell. "Gather around, everyone. I'm getting us out of here."

The tired members of the investigative force and Van Skewer come closer, and you finish the spell just as another volley hits.

As you arrive back in your cabin room, you see a number of the crew inside, surprised at your sudden arrival. The door to your room seems to have been barricaded in.

You hear a faint, familiar buzzing outside.

"I wonder if my prosthetic has enough shock charges left for me to kill myself..." You say, half-jokingly. "Crew! Ready whatever weapons you might have; we're sending these pests back to whatever hellpit they crawled out of."

A minute later, a gang of freshly armed kobolds spill into the halls of the ship, you at the center. You encounter none on your way up to the deck. However, a cloud of them greets you as you come up onto the deck, along with a massive, floating bird made of green and red glass. Atop the bird sits a human with long black hair and a loose-fitting white shirt and breeches, whirling a small green glass ball on the end of a pin.

"Well, well. Looks like you've come back home a bit soon. I was going to string them up with pins and watch your reaction, but now, I think that won't be necessary." He grins, the insects funneling back towards him.

"What the hell is this about?" You shout, pointing at the flying man. "Why are you attacking us?"

"Mr. Brando's order. Though I don't suppose you know who he is." The man stands up on the back of the bird. "Not too important for you to know. Rather, I think I'll be cutting this short before it gets awkward." The man casts down the object in his hand, and the green butterfly suddenly comes to life, flying away. His smile seems distant, as though he knows a trick and he's not telling.

"They call me Ringo Starr." The man says, motioning down towards you with one hand. "And now, you'll become another of my works of art."

    (End for tonight)
