"So," your radar operator says, "The Yeagers were looking for you earlier. Brother and Sister. They're over thataways."

    "I'm not here about that."

"Oh," Sean says. "So you want a sitrep on what the Wing Commander is doing about those mysterious alien radio transmissions we've been monitoring?"

    "No."

Sean looks at you searchingly, then notices the newspaper in your hand.

    "You're here for girl advice."

    "... yes."

"Have I ever told you I fucking hate pilots?"

    "Every damn day."

He sighs, and kicks at your head, forcing you to slide down the ladder. "Gimme a fucking minute, Richard Cranium, and I'l dispense my worldly wisdom."

I think it's time we showed these witches that they're not the only ones on the island with magic. Make it clear that we're not only better at flying than them (since we have to actually work for it), but that we can best them in the mystical arts as well.

We should put on a show for the whole squad, demonstrating the manly approach to what has thus far been an entirely too feminine subject. We will dazzle and amaze our audience with feats of magic never before seen. We will astound them with the precision and dexterity of our sorcery. We will once and for all prove that Man is equal to or greater than panty-clad loli.
We will pull a rabbit out of a hat.

"So. Yeah. Uh, Trude is all pissed off at me this morning, because of this." You flourish the newspaper and the damning photo.

"Yeah," Sean says, looking at it. "I did notice him fuck off to the dorms this morning with a stack of something. Sneaky little fucker."

"But..." you snatch the paper back and punch it with your free fist in frustration. "Trude was - last night, when she sucked me in the window, she was on me like gay on a sailor, man! Even after the alien attack interrupted things, she was pretty damn friendly. Even tried to play the 'dead' joke on me. She was *relaxed,* man! And now this!" You sigh. "I'm not fucking Cassanova but even I know this whiplash shit is weird."

Sean stares at you. "Are you a complete moron, or are some pieces still missing?"

    "Whu?"

"Chris, you raving fucking moron. Her sister. It's been what, forty-eight? Seventy-two hours? She should've been found long before now, alive OR dead. Trude knows that, she isn't stupid. And the wait has gone on twice as long as it should have."

    ".... so."

"So it's got nothing to do with you, you self-centered fuck-face," Sean says, rubbing his forehead like a weary old man lecturing his grandson. "She's going nucking futs right now, man. And Sakamoto's pretty sure she was crushing on you after we saved her ass in that first scrap, so..."

No way. No *fucking* way. You're the pilot here. YOU have the casual sex, not them.

That would be Minna. For reference, "Wing Commander" is both a title in other militaries (basically a squadron commander; a squadron is four flights of four aircraft, i.e. 12 fighters - or roughly 12 witches, in this case,) and an actual rank, like "Captain" is. An RAF Wing Commander is analogous to a US Army Lt. Colonel, which typically commands a squadron-strength unit, though in WWII some over-strength squadrons were commanded by Majors (like Frank Luke is.) Trude's a Flight Lieutenant, equivalent to a Captain, which usually leads a "flight" of four aircraft. MC is a First Lieutenant, like all pilots (all pilots are officers and receive an automatic promotion to 1st Lt. before they finish flight school,) which is analogous to an RAF Flight Officer.

Of course, what with all the crazy shit, you're due for a promotion, no?

But we're reading constant broadcasts; STRONG broadcasts at all those locations... even here."

I bet the damned signal is coming from underground, and we'll need more of those solenoid things when they activate!

And even if we manage to convince them, how would we manage to pull this off without the brass noticing our preparations or the sudden mobilisation of tank witches?

"You rang?" you ask, standing to meet Chuck.

"Yeah," he said. "My ship's engine is acting damn funny. The mechanics can't quite sniff it out." He glances around and whispers to you: "I don't think they're as used to in-line engines, and this one's a pain in the ass to work on at the best of times."

"Well I'm no mechanic..." you say, shrugging.

"Sure, sure. But Shirley said you had a feel for engines. Would you at least sit in the cockpit and fiddle with the levers for a minute?"

You shrug. "Sure, what the hell. Always wanted to see what a Mustang was like."

Yeager's got one of the new B-model Mustangs, and you emit a low whistle upon seeing it. A tremendous amount of fuselage has been cut back behind the cockpit, the bottom of the nose looks sleeker, and overall it looks like... well, like a fighter. The last time you saw a Mustang they were still calling them A-36 Apaches, and you were a cadet who was bucking for a seat in one.

"They moved the guns out of the nose?" you ask.

"No room, not with the better radiator setup," Chuck says. He grins. "No fucking speed brakes, either."

The whole "Shirley says" thing makes the back of your neck itch the way it does when Martian bandits are drawing a bead on your six. This is a set-up, you're fucking sure of it.

Well, two can play that game. "Well, here I go!" you say, and sling yourself into the cockpit.

    "... motherfucker."

"Does babby need a booster seat?" Chuck croons, laughing as he tosses in his parachute. With the parachute under your ass, like it should be, you end up sitting at the proper height. The cockpit is spacious enough, for a fighter, and well-laid out. The tail of the fighter is lashed down to the back of a flatbed truck, to keep the fighter from going anywhere and to hold the wings level, as they would be in ordinary flight.

"Ooh, back-up irons," you say, shifting your head to look through the old fashioned hoop-and-post sights set to one side of the reflector gunsight. "Good shootin, Tex!"

"Better then you any day, Yankee," Chuck says. "Let'er rip."

Have the Martians sent raw materials and other resources BACK to Mars in order to help fuel their military war machine?

You do. The twelve-cylinder inline kicks over cleanly, and you give it a minute for the oil to warm up before gunning her in earnest. The frame of the Mustang shudders with power, and an electric thrill surges through your veins - sometimes, you wonder if a single-engine fighter isn't more your speed. You slowly advance the throttle towards maximum, conspicuously doing zero troubleshooting. You shan't be drawn out that easy. Watch the mundane Widow driver break the engine, ayup.

You suppress a satisfied smile when Yeager starts making "cut" motions before you even reach 90% power. Shutting her down, you wait for the prop to stop twirling before you sling yourself out of the cockpit.

"Sorry," you say, shrugging. "Guess I just don't-"

"Are you kidding!?" Yeager says as he trots over to you. “You got it!” He shakes his head, laughing.

    You blink.

    "What?"

"That shudder around forty-percent power," he says. "You didn't even have to think, you just adjusted the propeller pitch and that was that!" He beams at you, genuinely impressed. "Shit, I thought I knew engines. Thought it was a knock issue; cylinder head or gasket or even shitty fuel or something. Never thought the shaft or prop was a little off-balance. Shirley was right; you really are a Merlin man!"

You sock him right in the fucking face.

He stares at you in complete shock... for about two seconds. Then he lunges off the floor.

"DAMYANKEE!" He takes you down and you begin wrestling in earnest. He manages to roll you over to a tool caddy and bounces your head off it a few times until you smack him away with a handy paint-roller, beating him about the face till he lets up a little. Chuck just manages to get you in an arm lock when you hook your foot under the heavy tool caddy and, with every ounce of strength in your legs, manage to topple it over on him.

Well, on you too. But more on him, and that's what counts.

"Sir, I was teaching him Close-Quarters-Combat, sir!" Yeager says. You get some leverage on the toppled tool cabinet with your legs and use it to flip on top of Yeager, shutting his mouth with your shoulderblade.

"Sir that is total bullshit sir!"

    Minna hoists an eyebrow.

"I was teaching him how to grapple, sir!"

"HRRMFFF!" Yeager says from under you.

"And what practical purpose does that have?" Minna says coldly.

"Are your ribs still taped up from that encounter with the Martian tele-bot with all the friendly hugs?" you say pointedly, and the flinch on Minna's face is quite satisfying. It also distracts you long enough for Yeager to get some leverage on the ground again and flip you onto your face, where he tightens his arm-lock on you.

"Sir, this damnyankee is a lying bastard, sir! I taught him everything he knows!"

"I..." Minna rubs her head miserably, and even with your face mashed into the concrete, you can see a moment of bone-deep weariness betrayed on her features. She turns back to the clipboard she's carrying. "Well... carry on, I guess."

"Strange signals are rebounding o'er hill over dale over the dusty trail the army is faggots why do they have the worst song I don't like it what about you? The signals are very strong and must be Martian gobbledygook because it's even making the Commie chick depressed and she had to listen to Gobbels AND Soviet radio for like a year so that's pretty bad and I fish more get mee-a-foo-jay is pretty cool guy."
