48 KB ELF SLAVE: WUT DO??? Taskmaster 02/14/12(Tue)19:58 No.17951578
Your name isn't writeable, in these human letters, but it would translate roughly as "Web of Green Sprouting Vines." Or just "Web" for short. You are a very young elf, just nineteen springs old. And you are a slave.

Locked in a courtyard of wooden barricades (You've tried to make those walls and towers rot, but they caught you at it and beat you within an inch of your life), you are given but a single, feeble sapling to sleep in. At dusk, you are bound in chains of cold iron and taken outside, forced to use your kinship with the growing things to coax a new forest into being. At dawn, you are returned to your guarded courtyard and thrown back at your tree to sleep for the day. Once a week they throw you some raw birds or reptiles that they caught; its enough to live on, but not enough to make you comfortable. You don't know why they're making you grow a new forest. Its not like orcs even live in forests, do they?

This afternoon, you've woken up early, disturbed from your slumber by a frightening dream whose details escape you. It is still, judging by the sun, nearly an hour until dusk. Atop the guard towers, the orcs keep a lazy watch, mumbling to each other in their gutteral voices. You are still standing in your alcove in the sapling's trunk, feigning sleep.

    Wut do?

The orcs are speaking a dialect you don't understand, though you've managed to pick up a few words. Like "tree" and "food" and something that you're pretty sure is an abusive nickname for you.

    >>17951622

No, sadly. If it were a living tree, you could gradually persuade it to grow in the shape you wanted, but dead wood is beyond your speech. You already tried summoning some termites to eat it, but the orcs caught you at it and beat the shit out of you.

    >>17951692

You can indeed make trees grow unnaturally fast. However, you'd still need the seeds to grow them from, and there would need to be an orc sleeping on top of one.

Still, that might be a good idea for later.

You're the only elf in this quickly-erected little fort. It was probably smart of them to not keep multiple elves together, even though it makes their forestation work much slower. As far as you know, there aren't any other elves until the great mountainside forests several days to the south.

    >>17951707

"Woods" may not be the best word. This region is a flat, open grassland, and a lot of it doesn't even have grass, making it more of a desert. There are a few groves hidden in little vallies and oasises, which the orcs have been making you expand. Its hard work, and slow.

The meanest animals you've seen around are packs of wolves, poisonous snakes and scorpions, and same rather territorial social birds. The orcs also warned you about giant worms that would eat you if you try to flee, but you're skeptical about those.

They are probably not paying much attention to us yet, its too early.

Lets see, we see the keys used on the heavy iron shackles every night and morning. Can we spend this quiet time coaxing our sapling to grow a hard little thorn in the proper shape?

We could bite it off (and offer the sapling a kiss of apology), keep it tucked in our cheek until the night to keep it alive and reactive. Once we get a quiet moment in the dark we can try opening the cuffs. If the fit is not perfect we just have to beg the little spark of life left in the thorn to change a little.

Using your tree as a conduit, you cast your mind out into the hidden webs that connect all living things. You pass through orc and grass, insect and mouse...

Actually, you already grew a number of thorns on your sapling out of boredom, and eventually tricked one of your guards into putting his hand there. It was funny, even though he almost broke your nose afterward.

It never occured to you to use the thorns in this way before, though. You put your mind into the tree, and make it realize that one of its thorns needs to be a little longer and more bent at the tip, and that it should concentrate its bark to make it harder. The tree isn't really sure why, but trees are dumb and do what they're told. Within fifteen minutes, you have a serviceable lockpick.

The orcs still aren't due to wake you up for a few minutes, in the meantime you try and get into that centipede.

    >>17951899

The centipede's greatest fear is those goddamned rats that grab centipedes around the middle and bite them in half before they can defend themselves. The birds are pretty bad too. Bigger creatures, however, don't greatly concern it; one bite is usually enough to make them go away.

    >>17951902

You let your hatred of the orcs become part of the centipede's mind as well as your own. It curls up, suddenly paranoid about giant, green feet. It will probably bite the next one it sees, if it can do so without endangering itself too badly.

None of those social, peck-your-eyes-out birds within range, but there are some other, harmless birds. They know about a tribe of what sounds to you like goblins who travel in a tent-village around the prairie, and are currently nearby. The birds like it there, some of the goblin children feed them (probably so they can lure them close and eat them, but the bird hasn't figured that out). There's two nests of the eye-pecking birds nearby, which the other birds avoid, but you already knew about those.

    >>17952057

You break off the thorn, graciously accelerating the tree's healing as you do, and hide it in your tangly, green hair.

You make more rodents and insects within range hate the orcs. Unfortunately, most of them would rather run from hated things than attack them. Where's a bear when you need one?

If we can bring our friendly centipede out into the field where we work with the new trees it could serve as the distraction we need.

Get friend centipede to drop on the closest orc's head from a tree, wriggle and bite (and try to drop away to safety, of course). While the orc is busy cursing and smacking at it's own head we pick the lock and flee like a bunny, "shouting" at the trees we know in passing to aid out escape by dropping a few extra leaves on our trail or bending a branch just a Bit lower to obstruct pursuit.

You manage to convince the centipede that it smells prey in the direction of your tree. It crawls over to you...damn, that thing's big. You reach down and let it crawl onto your hand, then place it too in your wild hair. Then you convince it that its actually very cold out, and that it needs to hold still for a while and conserve energy.

Keeping the centipede subdued is going to be a slight drain on your power for as long as you have that going. Not a big deal, just a minor distraction, but I figured it bore mentioning. You're a very young elf, and your biomancy is still improving.

    >>17952174

The orcs in the towers are just looking out (which you don't blame them for, after the snake incident you pulled last week). Others are, as usual, adding to the fortifications and digging more foundations, using mostly earthen walls with the occasional wooden one. They're only using dead wood, for the most part, which is why their supply is limited. Metal is being worked down below, probably by that poor dorf you've seen them dragging around.

Trippy plant roots are well within your ability, though it would take a little while to grow them.

    >>17952282

You open your eyes further as the guard approaches.

"What would you have me do?"

Chezzgig grins, his putrid breath offending your nostrils.

"Heh, finally learning some manners. Though you're not getting any smarter. But I guess I can't complain about that. Same thing you did last night, and the night before, and the night before that."

"Fully grown" is subjective. In these conditions, its hard to make a tree grow as tall as it would in the forest.

But over the past couple of months (you THINK its been that long) you've turned many seeds into shoots and shoots into saplings, some of them as tall as you are, and you've greatly multiplied the seed yield and survival rate of the flowering adults.

    Excellent.
So we currently have a tool for escape and an ally who will hopefully aid in the attempt.

We just have to bide our time, find the right moment.. and get loose to sprint like a green bunny.

Have to make some serious distance in the the trees, way beyond searchers, then maybe bunker down for a restful communion with a big healthy tree..

Wait, if we were to find a submerged place near tree roots, could we stay submerged and hidden through a day? Better a waterlogged green elf then a re-captured one.

These birds aren't native to your home forest, but the orcs call them "drol-huath" (and you're pretty sure "huath" is their word for "blood"). They're a little bigger than swallows, and nest together in big groups inside of hollow trees and underground burrows, and they defend these nests like feathery hornets with a taste for eyeball.

You reach your mind into the little forest nestled in the small valley, and feel the birds. Its evening, so they're mostly coming home and getting ready to sleep. What do you tell them?

    >>17952847

"I don't like it because the boss won't let us drop your willowy ass until its all gone. Is there a reason you won't shut up this evening? Cause if there isn't, I should probably beat you up."

    >>thank you kindly

There's only patches of trees across this prairie, such as the one you're currently expanding. But there are fields of tall grass in some places that you can hide in to escape.

You can stay underwater as long as you keep your head up to breath. You could probably use a hollow reed or something as a snorkle.

The drol-huath haven't seen anything like an elf recently. There are a couple of big snakes in the valley right now, and a small wolf pack was hanging out by the pond earlier today (they're out hunting now, though).

The birds only really get vicious when defending their nests, so you'd need to mess with their instincts in a complicated way to make them attack someone far from the nest.

Fungus is mindless and doesn't "want" anything, but that same mindlessness makes it easy to control. You make some wood fungus go to seed prematurely; their spores will be ready for you to grab before dawn.

    >>17953087

Drol-huath are omnivorous, from what you've seen. The orcs hate them, because any sane person would hate them. You could probably convince the birds that they're much shorter on food than they realize, and that they should come and grab some protein. Do you?

    >>17953151

You walk around the perimeter, occasionally going deeper into the valley to make sure the vegetation is advancing properly. You move some seeds around, discourage some badly placed seedlings, and convince the ants to go after nectar and pollen tonight instead of seeds.

The orcs spread out, keeping an eye out in every direction, with Chezzgig watching you. They stay within thirty feet of each other at all times. The other four don't seem very attentive, though.

That's the problem with humans - they could be like ANYTHING. They could be more kind than our own family, or more cruel than the orcs.

You don't know of any parts along this stretch of coastline. Due to its low rainfall and poor natural resources, no one has taken much of an interest in these lands. Well, aside from goblins and (more recently) orcs. You THINK you catch some glimpses of fishing boats along the beach, though.

    >>17954422

Humans. You've heard many conflicting stories about humans.

According to the tales of the elders, passed down for generations, humans are ignorant marauders, traitors to the All-Soul, who destroy forests to plant their useless farms.

According to some traders you've talked to who have met humans, they make the exact same accusations against elves, expanding their savage forests onto ancestral human farmlands.

All in all, the two races don't think highly of one another.

Let's go east. We might stand a better chance there if the population is sparse and we can at least dodge away at the sign of danger.

Also, cultivate the ladybug as a spy. Tell it to come back and find us, and set it out east.

East it is. You learned to swim in the rivers and lakes of your home forest, though tragically you were captured by the orcs before you could be taught the ancient elvish art of taborri.

You avoid the orcs, sneaking out of the valley and onto the eastmost hillock. You can see orcs moving toward the valley from their fort, and others atop horses combing the grassland. Their guttural voices echo across the prairie.

You look eastward. A bit to the northeast, your elvish nightvision sees what looks like a number of tents. This would be that nearby goblin tribe. You think that you could easily avoid them as you pass east, if you want to, or you could stop by and see if they're friendly without going far out of your way. On the horizon beyond them are the mountains you saw in the birds' minds, a bit closer than the dwarven ones to the south.

The north and west seem to be grassland as far as you can see. You happen to glance south and...wait, what? You look back and forth. Two orc fortresses. The one you came from, and another, just barely visible on the horizon to the south, located near another small forested patch.

You realize your oversight. The orc forts must all look so similar, that you saw them in the birds' minds and didn't realize they weren't all the same building. There could be any number of them scattered across the prairie. Damn.

Still, the presence of the goblin camp to the east implies that at least the next little bit is orc-free. Goblins are supposed to be canny little fellows, and you doubt they would flee deeper into orc territory.

As you trek across the prairie, under the moon and starlit night, keeping to the tallest grasses that hide you head to toe, you finally can think clearly. Free of the iron chains, away from the foul-smelling pen with its lonely and weak sapling, you are an elf in the wilderness once again.

The memories of the previous months run through your mind. The beatings and loneliness were bad. Watching the dorf and not being able to talk to him was worse. Even worse than this was when the soil needed to be deeper, and the orcs would throw the mangled corpses across the land and force you to decompose them overnight, until not even the wolves and buzzards would deign to touch them. Watching those human and goblin faces - some of them those of children - dissapearing into piles of overgrown mulch by your own hand...

The orcs made you plant trees that grew quickly and bore fruits and flowers, the kind that would attract animals quickly and make the soil enrich faster. It was all very clever, very well thought out. Chezzgig and his fellows had no idea of this, as far as you could tell. Whatever master they served, he must be far more learned in the ways of life and death than any orc.

You think then of home, but do not allow yourself to cry. No, home later. For now, only the road, and the immediate future.

Good night, elegan/t/ /g/entlemen. Elf Slave; Wut Do? will return tomorrow evening at nine o'clock PM, 4chan time. In the meantime, feel free to decide whether or not we'll approach the goblins next time.

    Thanks, OP, innovative stuff here.

I say we can approach the goblin camp; it's not too much trouble, and we can just observe them from afar and maybe get some animals to talk. That should be enough to give us an idea, and then we can decide what to do.

Yeah, if the goblins are nomads, they should have riding animals, stock animals, and some kind of intelligent shepherd animal like a dog. We should be able to get a LOT more information from those than from a stupid, tiny-brained bird.

Much like Frost Giant Quest you managed to take something worthless (elf slave spam in this case) and make something neat.

We need a drawfriend to cook up a rail-thin green elf image. Uneven hacked hair and (in my mind) bands of lighter skin at the wrists that looks scar-shiny from the long-term touch of steel. Not the average elf, this.
