Having successfully shot the hell out of a few Martians, fought as a team with the Witches for the first time, and even covered a successful sea/air rescue, you fly home at half-power, babying the engines. You're worried about having pushed the prototype powerplants so hard with WEP for so long, but the results speak for themselves - you turned around for a second strafing run and no Martian fighter ripped your ass off for it.

You arrive at Castle Barin a bit late, since you spook a few radar operators and Fighter Command insists on having a Beau scoot by to sniff you over. Inspection finished, you leave your mandated heading and fly overland to Castle Barin. Despite the stupid runway, there's not much of a pattern-wait to endure - you can say that much for the damn place, at least.

Your wheels bump against sweet, sweet tarmac at last, and you immediately cut the engines, letting the Widow roll to a sedate stop to one side of the wide courtyard area. Steerable nose-gears, don'tcha love 'em?

You sit tight, waiting. You hear Sean kicking his access door open, and just as he's sprinting to the nose of the plane, you pop your canopy and clamber out, slithering over Ian's persplex canopy window, climbing over the stowed gun turret, and then onto the left tail boom, where you shimmy along swiftly to drop to the ground near the vertical stabilizer. This maneuver gives you about twenty feet of head-start to run like fucking hell from an extremely annoyed and somewhat green looking Sean.

Your exhilaration is superior to his sickly rage, and you manage to outdistance him handily. You get to the hangar, where 'techs are ripping Strikers apart at a feverish pace, replacing all sorts of shit you don't recognize and don't care about. Casting about madly, you espy one of the big, heavy, Striker boarding-thingies, where the Witches climb up a ladder to sling themselves into the leg-devices.

These are highly technical terms; only a man like you would know them.

Dashing over, you duck behind it, hoping it'll hide you from Sean's wrath and, just perhaps, Minna's. There are no chocolates or anything else in her damn desk - how would you know anything about that, you've never been in there, after all - but the others don't know that. Somebody WILL go looking and they'll turn up something - a Questionable Magazine, or some such - and oh won't THAT be a fun day?

    "Hey."

You look up to see the blonde-haired Erica peering down at you.

"Did you just... run away from your plane?"

    "... yeah?"

    "Aren't you, like, hurt?"

The instant she says it, your pitiful, bruised, wounded stomach muscles remind you that you are, indeed, fucking hurt. Adrenaline, endorphins and morphine pick that exact moment to check out of the Hotel Ghostrider, and you bite your cheek hard to keep from wincing in front of Miss SuperAce.

"I guess. Don't matter," you say, shrugging in what you hope is a hard-boiled manner.

Erica tilts her head, looking at you curiously, then disappears. A few seconds later she comes walking around the side of the Striker stand, looking up at you wearily.

    "You came in late."

"Wore out my engines. Didn't want to push them too hard."

"So... you haven't heard," Erica says, her eyes drifting to one side.

Cold grips your gut. "Heard what?"

Erica's blue eyes bore into yours, and her face becomes still and expressionless. "Trude is dead."

    "Bullshit."

    Her mouth drops open.

"I *just* used that one, girl. Come on, give me SOME credit. There's no way an ace with a scorecard like Trude's would just up and die on me."

"Damn," you hear somebody say from inside a nearby trashcan.

You stroll by and kick it over, spilling out a squinched-up Trude.

"Nice try, you horrible, horrible little girl," you say without much heat. You're not really angry and oh jesus does that wound hurt like a sonofabitch. You lean over a little, clutching at your belly. "Ooof."

"Serves you right," Trude says, sticking out her tongue.

"Shoot, he's smarter then he looks," Erica complains behind you, then yawns. "Man, it's late. I'm going back to sleep."

I looked up that impromptu discussion thread that'd taken place Thursday and I when I saw all the people predicting I'd kill off a Witch for shits'n'giggles or a Buckley WE SERIOUS WRITER NOW moment, my troll-glands started secreting sweet poisonous nectar. But you're adapting to my bullshit. I need to step it up a notch.

Also, I'm proud of anon for taking a third option with the dogfight/rescue thing, and especially with the fight-or-run thing. Despite me blatantly egging you on to fight the Martians (you could've taken 'em!) you decided to fight as a team and got the best possible outcome with a tack I hadn't even considered. And even worked out as a pretty realistic scenario, and that's important because MC kicks ass with gritty realistic fighting, not sparklemagic, right?

"So who went into the drink?"

"Sanya," Trude tells you. You extend a hand to help her up, and she accepts it. You almost drop her, clutching your middle with your free limb, but you stubbornly haul her upright. "She was patrolling alone when the whole raid came in."

"She was chased by a half-dozen escorts," Erica tells you. "She made it a good distance before they blew her Striker apart."

"How do Witches even SURVIVE that?" you marvel. "Not like you carry parachutes."

"We're trained to make a kind of shock-absorber with our shields," Trude tells you, sketching it in the air with her hands. "You summon a big, weak shield in front of you - big enough to cover, oh, three times the normal area - and that slows your fall with air resistance. Then, close to the ground, you pull it into a small one, about the size of your body, and shove it outwards towards the ground as hard as possible." She shoves her palms forward illustratively. "If you're good you can land quite gently. First time I used it, I sprained a wrist." She shrugs.

    "Oh, right," Trude says.

    "Fukkus? What?"

"This thing," Erica says, leading you around the Striker stand. She pops open a panel on her Striker unit, revealing a complex-looking little object of carved crystal about as big as a donut.

"There's one in the other leg, too. They're backup shield focuses. Witches summon shields instinctively, but units like these greatly enhance our ability to focus and use them. Like the magic engines, they put out a lot more effect for a little energy invested."

"Like putting gas into an engine instead of sitting on the whole barrel and blowing it up under your ass," you say.

"Right," Erica says. "Much more effective!"

"And those little back-ups let us focus our shields for dynamic landings," Trude finishes.

"Looks like you're in pain," Trude says kindly.

"Nah," you say, then fall to your knees.

"Yah," you admit with a low wheeze.

"C'mon," Erica says, and the two of them try to pick you up and cart you off. With their magic expended in battle, they don't get far.

"Shit, I'm not *dead,*" you complain.

"Yes you are," they both singsong in unison. You sigh.

"Okay, Sir Galahad," Trude grumps. "Just lean on me." Lean on her you do, and she helps you stagger out of the hangar and the long, long way to the roomy, vaulted lobby of Castle Barin, where at least a few comfy couches survived the robo-spider assault.

Trude deposits you on one and promises to return with a morphine-syrette toting doctor. Through the pain, you ponder your next move. You're too beat up for energetic, post-mission life-affirming sex with Trude, but at least one productive thing before the oblivion of sleep isn't impossible.

Trude returns in good time with the doctor, morphine, and a wheelchair. Some minutes later, you're moderately well doped, and being wheeled down the dormitory hallway to visit Sanya (Trude showed you a freight elevator you can use on the off-chance you don't just bounce down the stairs again tomorrow.)

Trude stops by a door, and knocks on it politely.

"Isn't this Eila's room?" you ask, pointing at the little brass name-plate.

"Sanya's in here often as not," Trude tells you. "They play cards or count spots on the ceiling or whatnot."

The door opens to show Eila, somber and red-eyed. "What?"

    Trude blinks. "Sanya...?"

"In her own room," Eila tells you. "Don't bother. She won't even talk to me."

Eila slams the door a bit brusquely, but you don't take offense - she's clearly shaken up a bit.

"... well," Trude says quietly after a second. "That's that, I suppose. We can check tomorrow." She wheels you around and pushes you down the hall, back the way you came.

    "Where we going?"

"Long way to the engineer's dorms," she tells you, "-and you're all shot up."

    "You going to bed soon?"

"Takes hours to settle down for sleep after a battle like that," she tells you.

"Mind if I talk to you about something?"

Trude's footsteps clap the floorboards a little harder then before, and her voice is a bit stiff. "What about?"

You roll your eyes. "About what color the wedding invitations should be and do you want to buy a baby-book or name our firstborn after a relative or-"

"Okay, okay," Trude gripes, relaxing a bit. "What?"

    "Magic."

Minna already knows about Chris. we know she hangs out in the towers we saw here there, and Trude told us its not an uncommon place. the transmission was going going to a wireless set in the towers. Minna is keeping it a secret from the witches for whatever reason.

Because the modern concept of machines are something that we have forged with human hands. Although the mechanisms can be very complicated at times, we have total control over then and can explain how exactly they work.

Magic has this whole air of superstition around it. Those not in the know can't really control it or understand how it works; just how it works. It seems more based on emotions and feel than anything else.

Thus, I would assume that these opposite spheres of human understanding would be separated completely and incompatible.

"I...huh. Come to think of it, that's the way I've always thought of it. It's MAGIC, you Witches never explain shit."

Trude smiles. "Well, most people don't really care. Unless they're Witches themselves, then they're trained."

    "Where?"

Trude shrugs, and waves vaguely. "Here, for starters. An academy like this one. Almost all of them are old, or even ancient."

You think about that. "So the only people who really understand magic - understand it well enough to teach it properly, I mean - are shut up in these cloistered little monastery-like things."

Trude blinks so innocently you don't doubt her. "I... I suppose so. I never really thought about it before."

You scratch your head, thinking furiously. You're sure plenty of people HAVE thought of it before, but they're in books you haven't read, circles you don't move in. Hell, not every library would even hold truck with books as political as that - the one in your hometown tried to quietly ditch its copies of Huckleberry Finn twice, a few years ago because it was "racist" and back in 1890 because it *wasn't.*

So unless you pop off to Oxford on a three-day leave, you're flying alone in the dark. Well, that's nothing new, is it?

"Everybody else has to rely on machines, but Witches can just do whatever, with, you know, sparkly zaps," you say, zapping at her with your finger. "Doesn't seem like magic and technology would be bedfellows."

"Why not?" Trude says, truly puzzled.

"Because the modern concept of machines are something that we have forged with human hands!" you exclaim. "I mean, they're complicated as hell sometimes but they obey known physical forces that we've mastered, and they work just as well for anybody, all the time. I could take any - well, almost any- stick-in-the-mud moron and teach him how to change spark plugs in a Chevy, you know? But magic..." you throw your hands in the air helplessly. "Magic's all superstitious and, you know, weird."

    "Weird!?" Trude says, aghast.

"You know! Like flying lawnmowers and talking sofas and WEIRD shit! If you don't have it, you can't really understand it. And with the special abilities that seem unique to bloodlines and the familiar spirits, and..." you shake your head. "Nothing like, you know. logical machine-y stuff."

"Oh," Trude says, swishing her liquor around. "Well I can set you right there, at least - everybody *has* it."

Only the Emilys, Georges, and Jacks were hardy enough to not turn into a ball of fire when hit with a short burst from US .50 cals

"Everybody has magic," Trude tells you. "It's just that men, and most women, don't have enough to actually manifest it externally. Magic is..." she examines the ceiling, musing. "Life energy isn't exactly the right term, because it doesn't drain you or anything, but that's the closest I can come up with. It's just another kind of energy, something innate to the self, to any living being. That's why the talents are unique and found in bloodlines -it's no different then a family with kids good at math, or whatever." She shrugs. "Witches just happen to be really good with magic."

She leans forward, looking concerned. "Are you okay?"

"Totally," you say, and toss back your schnapps before your shock can permanently lock your jaw in a stupid drooling position. "So, uh, right, energy, you were saying?"

"Yeah," Trude says. "Just like gasoline or whatever. You can measure it, manipulate it, use it to power things - it's nothing mysterious." She laughs. "Is that how you men see us witches? All mysterious?"

"That's how we men see all women, period," you reply. "Can't make heads or tails of 'em."

"'Specially when we have actual tails."

"Quite," you say, buying time for your mind to spin.

Ok, I'm against waifufagging, but that sounds like a one of the choices our pilot would make.

Though I really don't think planefag would give in to that anyways, what with the whole "significant effort required" thing from earlier. It might be something WE'd do, but that doesn't mean Trude would.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. 'Course we could gain a world of hurt.

"Well, that makes sense," you say. "Thanks, it makes a lot more sense now!"

Trude looks at you fuzzily, as if she'd think you were acting weird if she hadn't a pleasant amount of schnapps in her system. "No problheem!"

You say goodnight, politely decline her offer to wheel you to the engineer's dorms, and exit the room.

Natural. As natural as... breathing? Isn't that what Conrad had said?

    >"They are the same. In all the books I read over all the years, going back to the Witches of Charlemagne, they say 'my magic comes from my soul.' It comes from your life. From your love. For whatever you do. Perhaps its part of everything we do. You cannot divide it up like this, here is skill, there is magic, line between!"

And Trude just told you that magic is a measurable form of energy, inherited and discovered like any other human aptitude. Neither tidbit really means much alone, but put together, you realize what the Witches don't.

Magic needn't manifest as raw power.

You sit there in the hallway, mind buzzing furiously as you tear through the logic chain. If Witches can pour energy into magical engines as easily as electricity into an electric motor... if they can shape and control that force with a machine... then why couldn't a man use himself as the focus? If magic is life-energy, then how could it not be in everything you do, especially if you do it well and love it?

    Something like, say, piloting?

Because tests have observers, so it's not like we'd be the only one's who'd know the results, thus leading to us being outed.

then there's the fact that we already know we have magic, that's why all the clocks started ticking in unison at that shop.

And on top of that, it's a /known/ fact that men don't have enough of this energy to use it, so Us asking for a test looks rather suspicious.

in other words, there's no way to take the test without at least causing suspicion (which is bad enough) or demonstration that we have the power (which is worse)

You were so hung up on that last one-percent. Where you push past the rules of physics and do "impossible" things. Flying through the tractor-lanes of an apple orchard with your wheels skimming the grass? They call you good. Flying through the length of a barn with your wingtips clearing the doors by inches? They called you great.

Reacting instantly to a snap-roll, then restarting the mysteriously failed engine in a matter of seconds without having to think? Or managing to restart a damaged engine without having it explode into flames and kill you? Or scraping paint off your belly on the cliffs of Dover, tonight, after flying inverted at 300 feet and better then four-fifty without skipping across the Channel like a fucking stone?

And now, Shirley's brother is here, and you've just been told that it *does* run in families, and he made ace in a day, too...

You giggle. You try to choke it down, but it's too much, and you break out into a fit of giggles right there in the hallway.

You're not an Ace because you've got magic.

You've got magic because you're an Ace.

Compared to that mastery, the brute-force way Witches apply magic is almost...

"Smalltime," you mutter to yourself, and that cinches it. You roll down the hall slowly, helpless to apply the brakes as you collapse in your chair from overwhelming, helpless laughter. "They... they really ARE smalltime!"

And come to think of it, true fighter aces are about as scarce as combat-worthy Witches.

    >>17907557

You eventually bump to a halt against the gently curving outer wall, and stop laughing as a sobering thought occurs to you.

The Witches must have known this shit for fucking centuries. Hell, the Witch stronghold you're sitting in right now dates back to Roman times. Witches have kept their secrets well... but right now, you're inside their base.

One wonders what the sealed rooms in the sprawling cellars would yield. Especially the coldest, driest ones where manuscripts would be stored?

On the other hand, you do have a rather pressing report to make to Minna about, you know, Martian death-machines and their lively radio chatter that bodes nobody good.

You roll over to Minna's room, and knock politely. Receiving no answer, you open the door and peek inside to see a room with no Minna in it.

    Duh.

You'll have to leave a note. Rummaging around in your jacket, you find Minna's confiscated memo pad, and place it on your leg to - why, where the hell did your kneeboard go? You can't write like that.

You roll into Minna's room and try to use her desk, but your wheelchair is set too low to utilize it. Finally, you roll to her bed, place the memo pad on that, and write your note about Sean's radio waves. You add another detail, then another, then wonder why Minna's bed smells like Minna. Beds should smell like clean sheets and deodorant and they generally aren't shoved in your face like this and are you supposed to drink after being doped with morphine no WHOOPS haha we'll have a laugh

You wake up in Minna's bed with somebody shaking you awake.

    "Come on, wake up!"

You blink your bleary eyes open, wondering why you've got a massive headache, a stiff neck, and occupancy in Minna's bed.

    Minna's bed.

You leap-lurch-bounce in a motion that's supposed to be a simultaneous crash-dive, crazy-ivan, split-S break-turn-immelman and any other maneuver of land, air or sea designed to save somebody from imminent physical harm. Instead you manage to fall clean off the bed and face-plant, and thrash madly against the blanket that still entangles you.

"Come on!" a young voice says. Instead, you manage to roll under the bed and hold your breath, praying to the dark gods you won't be noticed.

Yoshika's head appears, dangling past the hem of the bed. "What's wrong?"

    "SHHH!" you hiss. "If Minna..."

"She put the blanket on you, silly," she says, frowning.

    "She... what?"

"She got the report. She said it was the first responsible, officerly thing you've done," she says.

    "Oh, well, you know..."

"-and then she said it must've been the morphine and liquor because there was no way in h-"

"Thanks, Miyafuji, that's fantastic," you groan, clutching your poor aching head. "Why'd you wake me up?"

"Chuck. He says he needs your Merlin magic."

And, being that writefag is done of the night, Part Two of the story that's becoming increasingly fun to write...

July 1944, Somewhere over the Mediterranean Sea…

“Tally, one Neuroi Steamer and five… no, six sparkles.” Flight Lt. James “White Knight” Anders banked his P-38 to confirm his wingman’s count. “Martian’s aren’t due for two more days, though.”
James grinned underneath his oxygen mask. The new kid, Bernard “Flip” Sanders was green, but he was aggressive, whip-sharp and had a good eye. “Not fair when they don’t follow the schedule, is it?” James commented sarcastically.
He glanced back over his shoulder, the kid was still right on his wing through the banking turn around the battle. His gaze went back down to the half dozen witches buzzing around the Martian equivalent of a heavy bomber, showering it with machinegun and cannon rounds. They weren’t getting very far; while they were maneuverable and nearly impossible to hit with conventional weapons, they were lightly armed - his Lightning had quad-fifties, a 20mm Hispano, and nearly a dozen high-explosive rockets on his outer hardpoints. Compared with the single machinegun that the witches generally carried, James was confident he had more firepower than their entire squadron put together.
“So, we’re not going to let them get the kill, are we?” There was a hint of worry in the kid’s voice- he’d been out prepping for his first mission since before dawn that morning- eager to get out and fly; it was just his luck that the Martians had decided to show up ahead of schedule.
“Not a chance.” James voice was smooth, collected.

“Just letting the sparkles get a good workout first. Wouldn’t want them to get rusty on us.” He paused, watching the witches below. “Besides, takes them a good long while to take down a heavy like that. I watched them go at it for nearly five minutes once.”
“Roger that.” The rookie was getting antsy for a fight.
“All right, Flip, how’s your gunwork these days?”
James could almost hear the sunshine in the kids voice. “Flies off a wall, Lead. Without scratching the wallpaper.”
James grinned. He liked this one. “Right-oh, then. You’re on guns; follow me and try not to screw this up in front of the witches. The 48th has a reputation to uphold!” He reached over and switched the radio channel over to Witch’s.
“412th. 412th, This is Tomcat Flight. Rolling in to assist.”
    “Shit! It’s the fork-tai-“
“Stow the chatter, Lela… Tomcat Flight, area is hot, recommend diseng-“ That would be Lady Gwen, as she’d been nicknamed by the 48th; the Brittanian witch that had been forced to ride home on his wing a year before. James took special joy in disregarding her orders.

“412th, Attack direction is from above and to the Martian’s rear. Advise clearing the area, this is going to be a big’un.” With that James rolled the Lightning into a power-dive. The modifications that they’d received earlier that year had made the compressibility issues of his first mission a thing of the past.
The P-38 screamed as it bore down on the Neuroi, obviously distracted by the nimble witches it had been fighting. He could hear the same witch screaming in his earpiece to disengage. He ignored her.
As he came within range he thumbed the rockets, and nearly a thousand pounds of high explosive streaked into the Neuroi, blasting away one of the bat-like wings and turning the entire thing into something that looked like a cross between Swiss cheese and the surface of the moon. It shuddered and began to roll, but then James was past it.
Occasionally, the rockets themselves would destroy kill the bastards, getting a lucky hit somewhere and blasting them out of the sky, There was no such luck this run, but that’s why the maneuver had been refined to include a second plane. The rookie roared in, seconds after James’ Lightning cleared the Heavy’s nose. Looking back he watched the kid walk his gunfire up the alien’s back before destroying the now-exposed cockpit.
The Alien began to come apart in the air behind him as Flip let out a warhoop that’d make an Apache proud. “Nice shooting, kid!”
The two Lightnings leveled out among the witches. “Thank you kindly, ladies. We’ll send the bill to sparkle base!”

“…And I shit you not, one of them gave Knight the finger as they were flying off!” Anders enjoyed his luke-warm brew while the excitable Flip told the half-dozen gathered pilots of their victory against the Martians, and more importantly, the 412th Strike Witch Squadron. The kid went on, voice full of feigned pain. “Really, you’d think they’d be more appreciative of us for saving them all that work!”
“They just don’t like that the airmen are starting to do their jobs better than we are!” That would be Lt. Joey “Gambino” Mancini, another Lightning driver. His P-38 was down for engine work, so he’d had a few more brews than was strictly necessary, or allowed for combat pilots. “Maybe we oughta get a nice fortress to launch from, eh? Amirite?”
James finally spoke up. “If you ask me, fighting out of shacks and tents just makes us meaner.” He took a swallow of the flat beer. “Figure the sparkles get a nice warm night’s sleep over there in Alexandria, then get up and have a warm, fresh breakfast before going out to get a tan on the beach- Makes ‘em soft.”
James downed the rest of his mug before he stood up. “We combat pilots though; we sleep in cots with the scorpions and the camel spiders.” He had climbed out of his chair and was strutting around the canteen gesturing with an empty glass. “We get up before dawn, cold as fuck and shaking the deadly goddamned creepy crawlies out of our boots, putting on flightsuits in one of two sizes: Too big or too small. We eat our cold rations and drink our coffee. We get chewed out by the crew chief and by the time we’re slipping into the cockpit to go on CAP, we’re already about to kill someone.”

It's tongue-in-cheek, really. He's as much a pilot as MC, just not as aggressively so.

He stopped and motioned north. “Then those goddamn filthy Martians show up. We’re here because they’re here.” James finally moved back towards his original feet, the pilots nodding in grim agreement. “We take all the shit we can handle on the ground- we’re are not gonna take another ounce of it from the Martians in the air. Fuck that. We’re not gonna take their shit; we’re gonna kill ‘em, blast them out of the sky and piss on their smoldering graves.” He leaned back and waved at bar to bring him another drink. “And then we’ll come back here and drink lukewarm brews and talk shit about the Sparklies.”
Flip raised his glass as James’ got his new “To the Martians soggy graves!” The men of the 48th raised their glasses and took their drinks. The kid had brilliant timing, and James needed to repay the favor.
“To the Kid’s first confirmed air combat kill!” The pilots gave another cheer and took another drink.
As the crowd settled back down into their usual canteen chatter, James finally noticed the Captain’s assistant moving towards him. “Lt. Anders, Captain Bristol wants to see you in his office.” James swore under his breath; just when he needed to relax…

I was expecting the martian heavy to have a captured witch in cargo, and that "white knight" just killed her.

    That would've been delicious angst.

If she didn't want to get exploded with the rest of it then she shouldn't have been hanging around inside the Martian Heavy.

Ex-fucking-sactly. Leave the fighting to men with the rocket pods under their wings and the Hispanos in their nose.

Done for the night. I'm planning to throw stuff up at the end of all Planefag's threads, sort of a bonus for the late-nighters and archive viewers.

The T-34 was inferior to the M4. In fact, Soviet tankers absolutely loved their lend-lease M4s.
