Riddle of Steel rides again. Learn, laugh, bitch about the system, disregard weeaboos and westaboos alike, enjoy some kick-ass fechten arts. The pikes aren't going to stab Vikings in the dick on their own!

Oooh oooh I have a question!

Is thrusting to Zone X the best move for all situations?

    YES.

Well, unless the guy has a plate armor codpiece. /tg/ once almost botched a Galtfight going for the dicksmash against a plate codpiece.

Also, don't neglect Zone VI. Sometimes swinging up between a guy's legs to smash his nards in is just as fun as stabbing in from the front.

Heh, something about the katana that the bitching in the other thread somehow missed.

Its primary ATN of 5 means that it is, in general, a very, VERY good weapon at nabbing initiative during red/red situations. Rapiers and Smallswords, too.

Still working on a rule compendium for tRoS using the quickstart rules and the wiki as a guide. Should I include the sections on magic or leave them out altogether? Personally, I think most people would be better off playing Ars Magica or WW's Mage for that sort of thing.

I think that you'll find that they're different systems for different ends.

The Riddle of Steel is a role-playing game through and through. It concerns itself about how you wield weapons, and how you can make a good narrative out of the mechanics of a fight.
I wierdly and irrationally love that it exist(s/ed) as a game, but I'm really in no position to discuss the game mechanics. I've never played it, so while I do plenty of the grunt work, I dunnae have opinions on the system.

By God's Blood is a silly project. It's an attempt to make a table-top game that I'm interested in playing after I burnt out on GW and, to a lesser extend, Flames of War.
It's entirely based on gentleman's agreements and Don't Be A Dick. It doesn't concern itself with how weapons were weilded, because being a fech/tg/uy I've stopped wanting to explain and understand that abstractly. Instead it's about getting the flow of a skirmish feeling right when people are using simple, high percentage techniques.

There's certainly an overlap of ideas and approaches, but I don't think that By God's Blood could ever really replace tRoS.
    >> Anonymous 01/14/12(Sat)02:26 No.17537750
I'm designing a Rodelero fighting school. It feels a little weird to assign Cut and Thrust to the primary of a Traditional School, but well...can't get the main benny of a Progressive School if you wear a morion and cuirass.
    >> Anonymous 01/14/12(Sat)02:26 No.17537752
    >>17536665
it's also the limit. even fine weapons can't get lower than 5, so... the katana is as good as a fine sword.

    >>17537752
Well, you can still have a Fine katana, you just have to put the bonus somewhere other than Cut ATN. I think I once asked around whether people thought it would be smarter to make a Fine Katana with DTN 6, or with ST+2 cutting damage, and I think the consensus at the time was the latter.

I rather like the first, as the weapons are similar enough to make for a highly intricate fight, but different enough to keep it interesting. Also, these weapons are basically the beloved babies of the guys who wrote the game, so pitting them against each other is like an Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny. Pretty identical, I think. The Marxbruder were older, had stronger links to the Landschneckts, while the Federfechters had slightly stronger associations with urban fencing guilds, I think. But there were also 'free' fighters and stuff. One of them was also associated with furriers and hatters.

I ran something similar to this (though not with master fencers), but with both combatants in armor. The Bastard Sword wielder eventually scored first blood and ended that fight. (Harnischfechten + Swords = Definitely smarter to end on first blood than on death if you want to finish in a reasonable amount of time) Looking forward to seeing how blossfechten conditions affect things.

Now, if this was going to work out as one might expect from the fechtbuecher, the German should win this by master-striking with his first attack; - Krump, Zwerch, Zorn, Shiel or Sheitel, as well as all kinds of funky wind & bind stuff.

The Italian should win this by using high-percentage techniques and grappling-from-the-bind tricks. If he wins at all.

    But let all listen clearly,
    and without danger say,
that he is called a brave man
who can stand equally against his injury,
him I want to praise at all times.
    Chivalrous and without any misdeeds
and without complaints and courageously free,
    he is a true fighter.
The third advice that I want to give you
is that you should not learn fencing
if you plan to subject your fellow men
unjustly by use of this art. Therefore you should not
    fight with a pious man
unless it is necessary. In vain no one should be pressed.
If you want things to go well for you,
then in all fencing I advice you
not to rely too much on your art.
Practice your art by necessity, honestly
    and never in foolish vanity.
    Then you will always remain
a good and true man, a true swordsman.
For thus is the art of the sword thought out,
that you should practice truly in a spirit of chivalry.
That brings smoothness, cunning and knowledge.
    Secondly it often happens
that if you meet another man over God, honour and life
you will then gain victory in a chivalrous way
by your art by God and right, this I praise.

    SO IT SHALL BE.

Alberto Rossi, the brash Italian, shall deliver a thrust to his enemy's chest with 15 dice at 6!
Heinrich, the bold German, will receive the Italian's charge with 15 dice at 6!

If and when this is resolved, should Heinrich still be capable of doing so, he shall deliver a bold cut to the hands with one die.

No, I like yours better. Pierced heart. That's nice and clean.

So. The fight lasts exactly one second. The two titans of swordsmanship, staring each other down, spring into action. But for a bit of bad milk, or a less hearty breakfast for the Italian, things could have been different. The mighty thrust of Alberto Rossi slips past the always-deft guard of Heinrich von Saxony, and pierces that noble German heart, which has given so much for his school, and at last, given itself as well.

Time is running out for Mazepa the Cossack. At first, he was sure he could lose the woman on the endless steppe, but that proved futile. Now, she is within eyeshot, and closing fast. The great river has overflown--there is nowhere to run. Atop his little crest of land, he sees her growing closer, black steed foaming.

The time has come to fight. He closest a gloved hand around the grip of his trusty saber. For twelve long years, it has served him well. As he pulls it free, the ring of the steel brings him home, to the broad sky and unending fields to the east.

"Whatever has set this woman against me," Mazepa thinks, "will cause her to pursue me to the ends of the Earth. So she must fall, so that I may live."

The woman's horse has slowed, and she has drawn her sword as well. No words are spoken between the two, as they stare a thousand yards from only fifty yards away.

Slowly at first, and then with a thunder of hooves, both horses begin their charge.

    Not a bad idea.

Alright, so now for the initiative test to see whose hit lands first.

    Mazepa gets 7 at 6.
Sheon, after range and thrusting, gets 9 at 7.

Let's hope she doesn't hit first. I hate the falling rules.

The first of of course would be a Highlander game and the second would be some sort of Jedi or Sith story game. Both being run with maybe 1 or 2 other people, 3 at the most.

Do you think it's doable? How should I handle force powers? I haven't really looked at the magic stuff yet, would it lend it self to more free form type of crap? What stats should a lightsaber have?

    Unfortunately...

    and
    BL: 3
    S: 5
    P: 6-WP (2)

So we're at 3 Pain, and we've been reduced to well beneath 0 CP for this turn.

Thankfully it takes 3-4 rounds to turn the damn horse around and come for another go, so that's immaterial. The Polack, rather than risk a vengeful Cossack stranding them both in the steppe, dismounts once she's a good distance away, and approaches with a hungry look in her soulless eyes.

But he has his sword, and now the battle is on foot. Perhaps if he surrendered... No, she is obviously insane, she would never accept a surrender.

The only option is to fight! Fight to the bloody end!

The Polish devil stops, and cocks her head a bit, as though examining Mazepa's wounded arm from a distance. She seems to like what she sees a bit too much.

If she wins this, though, next time she comes up she's going to have Accuracy. Taking people alive is fucking hard.

We're likely to lose our combat pool to shock before we connect.

Although: that might work out better for us, since at least it will be 4 fewer dice subtracted from next round's cp. Except: it might not, as even a failed defense could decrease the wound level by a couple.

A couple of observations about these two death matches:

First, you really shouldn't declare your stance until you have an idea of what you want to do. High Forward versus Neutral got the Italian three extra dice, only to have us go for a very inefficient Master Strike attempt. Tsk, tsk.

I was gone during the Polska/Cossack fight, but the Cossack did not play to his advantages at all. The battle started out mounted, and he had a serious Ride skill advantage over his foe. Did you guys even attempt to take advantage of this? A ride check for an advantageous position would have cost nothing from the combat pool, and could have netted an early die pool advantage. Once dismounted, a terrain roll or two could have had you circling around to steal her horse with your superior Move stat. Barely superior, but it's something to work with when you're suffering from injury and hounded by an implacable rapist.

Thrusts to Zone X are fun and all, but need not prevent us from making smart choices to improve our survivability.

Also, the last gambit for the Cossack should have been a grapple to preemptively rape her.

Several of the weapons in the riddle of steel seem to be umbrella items, meant to cover a number of other weapons for games where nobody's really interested in getting too precise. Maybe I'm running a tRoS game and I know the bad-guy this session uses the Cut-and-thrust proficiency. I can quickly just give him the "cut and thrust" generic sword and we're off to the races.

I know I've done that repeatedly with the Arming Sword in my campaign. It's just a go-to Sword & Shield proficiency weapon.

It might mean to cover any of the small, regional styles of those swords that don't fit in anywhere else.

Generic Backswords are single edged, and primarily cutting swords. Generic Cut & Thrusts are two edged and primarily thrusting. It's only when something diverts heavily from these that it gets its own sword, like the Schiavona (which is really long) and the Pallasch (which is fucking huge and heavy), etc.

No, I meant it's there to cover specific regional variations of the type whether they're covered elsewhere or not. Rather than pore through the weapons list for the specific type of sword a minor noble from Lichtenstein might have used in 1523, you just pick "cut & thrust sword" out of a hat and go forward. This kind of decisionmaking happens all the time when players make an unanticipated decision and a fight starts up that the DM didn't see coming during normal preptime. Some accommodation to play-on-the-fly is always valuable in an RPG.

Yeah, I'm aware that the type is supposed to be a generic. It's just that it seems like most of the weapons I can think of always fall more closely into the more specific types rather than the generic. Mortuary Sword? Backsword. Espada ropera/spada da lato? Sidesword. And so on.

Ah, well, at least somebody made mention of the Arabian straight swords, that works.

...Also, I wonder how a fight between a Gallowglass with a Sparth Axe and a Landsknecht Doppelsoldner would play out...

An excellent point. I don't recall where that rule is in the book, but I've got it in the wiki under the Move derived attribute itself: http://knight.burrowowl.net/doku.php?id=rules:move

    quote:

Move is a measure of how much distance in yards one can cover on foot in approximately 1 or 2 seconds (one combat round). Average Move is 6.

    Move = (ST + AG + EN)/2

    Movement in Combat

A character may move up to his Move attribute number of yards in a combat round. In a single exchange he may move this number in feet. Moving this much in one exchange is considered Charging, and grants a +2 CP bonus to offensive action on that whole round, as though the character had adopted an aggressive stance. Charging incurs a -2 CP penalty to defensive maneuvers for the whole round.

Successful use of movement during a bout can often involve a terrain roll, at the Seneschal's discretion.
