334 KB Creepy Notes for a CoC game Anonymous 12/31/11(Sat)01:21 No.17382585
When players lose sanity points, slipping them a note with something creepy or delusional or even just oddly offputting on it works wonders at getting them to RP it. A few examples:

    >"You suddenly have a craving for steak. Rare as possible."

    >"Everything will be OK. This is not your fault."

    >"When was the last time the others ate or went to the bathroom? Investigate further."

    >"The others of your party are weak. Only you have the will to do what is necessary."

    >"You notice that no one else in the party casts a shadow but you"

    >"When the time comes be ready. They Won't Be."

    >"You've never once gotten seriously hurt. Perhaps you're invincible."

    >"Regrettable, but necessary. Life feeds on life."

    >"Until you cut it out, we will always be able to track you"

    >"It's weAring his skin. iT's watChing you frOm behind hiS eYes"

    >"Please wake up. None of this is real. You're just having a nightmare. Please wake up."

The idea is, you have a bunch of them pre-written, and slip appropriate ones to players who've suffered mental trauma that might result in such a delusion. EG; someone's becoming increasingly paranoid, so you slip them the "Until you cut it out, we will always be able to track you" one. Got any more, /tg/?

    Failing that, CoC general?

For some of these, it would be obvious what you're trying to do (then again, depending on what you're trying to accomplish, that may not necessarily be a bad thing). I really love the more subtle, "Everything will be OK. This is not your fault." It sounds to me like a real message you'd get from a GM when you're accused of a crime, so that would freak them the hell out.

    >"I'm very sorry for what's about to happen."

    >"OK OK OK OK OK OK OK OK OK OK OK OK OK OK"

    >"You're the only one of these people I trust."

    >"I'd be so happy if your heart just stopped."

    >"Just because you're not paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you."

    >"You are a tremendous disappointment to your parents. You do WHAT for a living?"

    >"Did you know that if you plan your nutrition accordingly, you never need to close your eyes? I haven't slept in a long time."

    >"Die."

    >"No matter where you turn, he'll always be right at the nape of your neck. Don't try to avoid him, you'll only inconvenience him."

    >"How sick do you have to be to bite another human being? I mean just imagine your teeth slowly sinking into their dully warm flesh and the slippery copper taste of blood as your jaw is squeezing just so FUCKING HARD ON THEIR BONES. Disgusting."

is probably terrible to have on a GM note. If I handed that to one of my players they would take it quite literally and try to get their character killed ASAP. Then say "What? You told me to do it, I thought you had a plot hook or something you wanted or were going to do something cool!"

GMs in Apocalypse World aresupposed to ask questions every now and then. Those usually start out fairly normal like "Where did your character get that sword?" and "You stumble upon Mary who really wants to hurt you. What did you DO to her?".
But later you'Re expected to go into more and more bizarre territory.
"What does her breath under your hand feel like?", "What is it like to know you've just killed your best friend's boy?", "What is the most terrible thing you have ever forgotten?"

Thought this might be relevant to your interests and the topic.

ITT: A bunch of retards who would derail their own game because they dont realise that players would take those notes literally.

Stop saying "die" or "kill them!" or shit like that. If you must include that stuff, make sure to write that you get a feeling that ... or you hear a voice saying that ...

Just writing "kill them" will make players think you have a deeper meaning with it and that you are asking them to kill the other players as an out-of-game note rather than making it part of the game.

    Fucking retards

    >Locked-in syndrome is a condition in which a patient is aware and awake but cannot move or communicate verbally due to complete paralysis of nearly all voluntary muscles in the body except for the eyes. Total locked-in syndrome is a version of locked-in syndrome where the eyes are paralyzed as well. The term for this disorder was coined by Fred Plum and Jerome Posner in 1966. Locked-in syndrome is also known as cerebromedullospinal disconnection, de-efferented state, pseudocoma, and ventral pontine syndrome.
    >Unlike persistent vegetative state, in which the upper portions of the brain are damaged and the lower portions are spared, locked-in syndrome is caused by damage to specific portions of the lower brain and brainstem with no damage to the upper brain.
    >Possible causes of locked-in syndrome include:
    >Traumatic brain injury
    >Diseases of the circulatory system
    >Medication overdose
    >Damage to nerve cells, particularly destruction of the myelin sheath, caused by disease (e.g. central pontine myelinolysis secondary to rapid correction of hyponatremia)

How about giving the players notes while they are in a crowded place? And then "it wasn't your fault" as they are shot down by the cops? While in the thoughts of how they died you reveal to the player that it was just a dream and have them wake up in the house that was described in the beginning of the season.

    >You feel a lurching in your stomach, like you've just been dropped from the top of a rollercoaster. Small objects start rattling and look like they're about to fall, but not down or in any earthly direction

Also, if characters get sleepy, roll lots of spot checks and occasionally tell them they see something out of the corner of their eye darting into shadows. If you want the characters to be going insane, make it indistinguishable from how you'd tell them they actually are becoming a vampire/have a demonic possession/are being sent messages by aliens.

I'd actually say making it dependent on rolls would be great. You meet a stranger who (unbeknownst to you) means you harm, and the GM hands you:

    >Something is off about him. He wishes to harm you.

And you don't know if a) you just did well on the perception check the GM just rolled behind his screen (DH player here, not sure what the CoCthulhu equivalent is), or b) the ritual murders you've been investigating are making you paranoid.

/tg/, I want to take this to another level, but still keep it within the same realm as OP.

In my next campaign, I want to be the professor leading a band of students on an archaeological digsite, where they stumble upon a band of Natives that mysteriously disappeared. The major plot point will be mysterious notes left for each player, each student, to unravel. Basically, I want to create a set of hieroglyphics (or a sub. cypher) that each player must decode using context clues, but ideally each player's codex should be slightly different from the next. I hope to use this to my advantage giving each player the same message and have them decode different meanings (like the ones listed here). Problems abounding:
A.) Should I use a substitution cypher? (replace one letter for another) Would that be too difficult to make?
B.) The opening "quest" will be a homework assignment for each player to translate a set of sentences as they can best do, and this homework will act as the student's bible for further notes. What basic sentences should I craft that are ambiguous enough to fit the model? Should I just write out different dictionaries for each player and hope they don't check each other's?
In the end, I'd like to have each player do what they think is right, and every person pull in a different direction thanks to the ambiguity of the messages left. Preferably, the confusion is due to the player's own devices, and not my forcing upon them.

Naw naw, keep it mixed up all the time.
Best effect is bullshit notes most of the time mix in a good clue, and then when they realize that one of the notes was actually helpful they'll be doubly mindfucked.

    Horrifying.

    I'm gonna use this.

There's a place in my 3.5 campaign setting where, if the party steps in it, the game immediately shifts to a horror campaign, sanity rules and all. I'm going to give two of the characters different reasons to "receive messages" and then let the third be thoroughly creeped out by being left out of the loop. One will be a surprise, and the other will be voluntary. One will tell helpful lies and the other will tell harmful truths.
