"What I don't get," The egg says, rolling in your hand as you step out onto the many-colored streets of the Crystal Caverns, "Is why you are now in his body. You'd probably receive his message a bit better if you were there to get it."

You grit your teeth. The disembodied voice of someone you've never met strikes a chord. Why were you sent here? Maybe "Future You" should learn to write a damn note instead of using magic to solve all his problems.

You come out into one of the larger streets, which is lit along the ground by pinkish-red crystals no more than a few inches tall sticking out from the ground. The street is clear of people, and there is a good deal of trash and grime. You head further in, and you can hear the bustle of the street further out.

"Ah! I've just gotten authorization." The egg says happily. "OK, so a primary function of this organization is to protect the universe using technology, and improve on it, always. Someone near to you was also asked by another organization similar to mine."

"Who else?" You ask the egg.

"Priorities, Mynthar." The egg responds, seeming to sneer a bit. "I've just been given a chance to let you try out some cool stuff. This allows the re-purposing of items for other uses. Go ahead. Find something near here and make it into something else. Anything your little heart desires."

Find a discarded cup of some sort.

"This; make it fill with water. Always to the brim, but never spilling."

"I am not in the mood for magic tricks, but..." You walk over to where you can see an alley cross onto the back street you've made your way on. You see humanoid figures in the dark alleys, kobold voices coughing. You ruffle through the refuse, finding a stone mug. "This; make it fill with water. Always to the brim, but never spilling."

You feel the mug shake in your hand, and the top of it suddenly becomes somewhat waxy, and before your eyes, transforms into a resealable mug, and you then feel it slowly gain weight as water appears within it, till it is completely full.

"There you go! Refills are not free, though." The egg snickers. "Less power for a less powerful object. Magical stuff like that will take a bit more built-up power than I'm allowed to offer right now, but this sealed mug should do the trick.

You hear a moan from within the alley.

Purse our lips as we stare down the alley. If it's nothing, return to someplace a little more private. If someone's in pain or trouble, the least we can do is help the downtrodden; the people are only as strong as their weakest link!

Let's check it out. We need to see whether our vision of a kobold worker's paradise comes true, or if our hopes of a magitek-fueled communist utopia becomes a bleak and dirty dystopia of magic and technology.

You hear a shivering sound as you turn your head towards the noise. Your natural darkvision sights a dark-skinned head against a background of discarded scraps of broken boxes. You see the red eyes brightly glint, as well as something curving and sharp below them.

"Stay back!" The hooded figure hisses. "I've got a knife!" The grayed wrappings slide over the blade of a combat knife, the weapon made of something shiny and white, with a short blade.

You can think of a number of ways to knock this guy out. He wouldn't threaten you unless something was wrong. He was groaning a moment ago.

"'Mending yourself is a bit more complicated', the power-that-is tells me to tell you." The egg says. "Not getting stuck like a cave pig would be a plus."

"Hey, wait." The voice says. "What are you? A doctor? Priest? Sorcerer?" The voice coughs until you hear a gagging wheeze escape from the grayish cloak. The knife quivers. "Ah, hell, what does it matter. Just get over here." You hear a scraping sound as he scoots back away on the ground.

You see no indicators on the knife of danger from your vision. You grumble as you close on inwards towards the huddled mass.

The kobold is still wearing his military uniform, the dark blue marking him as a NAJA operator. It looks somewhat tattered, but not too bad. His right hand and foot are gloved, and his skin is the deep red-black of a deep born kobold. His eyes have deep bags underneath them, and he holds his knife with a shaky hand.

You're not much of a doctor, but you did learn quite a bit about diseases from your brother's laws while they were setting down requirements for experiments that took place in his guild. This looks to you like either severe exhaustion or an infection, without checking much more. You move closer.

    "Watch it." The kobold growls.

"Listen, I can just be on my way if you want to make this difficult." You say to him. The soldier narrows his eyes to you, lowering the knife. He doesn't loosen his clutch on it.

You check in closer on the kobold (Who sits against a wall just within reach), seeing a small bite mark on his neck. Rats. You sigh. Good to know that your bill to stamp out vermin was such a success.

You don't have anything for disease, but general healing items you have quite a few. You dig through your pouch for one. "So soldier; what's your name? Rank? Field of deployment?" You ask him.

"Name's Graskeg. Lower world name." The kobold says. "I was a Stalarmen sergeant. Got kicked out of the squad after we were bought up by mining." Graskeg glares down at his knife. "Pretty common nowadays from what I hear. Mining and mercantile have been growing quickly, and they only trust their own folks in charge." He snorts. "But I can hardly blame 'em. We'd do the same." He is quiet for a minute. "I was deployed, out towards the end of the war, you know? Back before they had all this strange stuff. The 'real-feeling' arms and legs, you know?" He points over at your arm, his knife folded back momentarily. "Yours is just the generation before that. They're alive." He laughs, adjusting the robe over his huddled form, before springing the dagger back up. "Proven scientific fact. Heard it from the high tower guy." He coughs, his right hand coming up to his mouth, still wielding the knife. "He rarely speaks, right? So no way would he lie. He looks out for us common folks." The soldier adjusts himself, his knife clutched in his teeth momentarily as his gloves hand darts out. You think you see stony black flesh there.

"Soldiers who end up getting stuck in a hospital and who can't get better, or who take too long? They say there's a band of soldiers who goes into the hospital to kill them." He shakes his head. "Not gonna let it happen to me."

You offer the soldier the cup. The soldier takes it, looking it over carefully.

The kobold downs about half the mug in the time it takes you to finish speaking. "Yeah, the call 'em the Dwellers. They kill those who are too badly injured to be 'worth treating'. Bastards." He raises three fingers. "In a week at the hospital, I heard about two critical cases and an invalid going missing. I was stuck in bed for a while, so the nurses blabbed a little to me."

Graskeg lets out a quiet sigh. "Listen you seem like a nice guy, and you're obviously upper level, no offense. It's just not so nice down here. They'd kill me for this ratty cloak and the adrenaline in their belly at the bottom of it." He coughs once again. "Lotta fight-junkies around here. If you know magic, you should probably make sure you don't get seen. They'll take on anyone for practice, and provided your looks, they'd probably pick you to rob as well." Two kobolds are holding the signs, arguing over who bought the shade of putrid lime green first. You note that you see a big, friendly version of the face that you knew back in your time. The head of the mercantile guild! A huge sign with his face and bejeweled fingers on it sparkles and shines. His eyes light up, and a magic mouth somewhere speaks. "Welcome to the mercantile state of the Crystal Caverns! Please be sure not to become violent in an area where it won't earn you any money! That's a waste of good aggression, my comrade." He laughs once, loudly. "And also, against the LAW!" The statue shouts the last word, before coughing once. "A-hem."

It is merely an elaborate sign with a sensor attached.

You press further in, hearing a kobold shout the word "Watch! Watch!" over and over. You see a long line of kobolds, all with four prosthetic limbs of a strange construction. They seemed made almost of a kind of light clay, but their muscle appeared to mimic the function of a limb. Most had several broken lines in a neutral color, such as white, black, brown or gray, down the sides. Some were well-painted, and obviously modified with external spurs, hooks, and spikes. Each limb had a number printed on it. You see many 1's, mostly on the legs, a number of 2's, right arms, you note. You see one gray kobold who stands taller than the rest. His arms are both a yellow and black color. His legs are a deep black white a white 2 printed cleanly on the thighs. He flexes, the skin stretching as the muscle suddenly expands and contracts to twice the arm's size, almost like a rubber balloon. You see a black 3 on his underarm.

One combatant appears as a terrifying kobold-sized black dragon with six wings made from hooks, each in a triangle net-like pattern. His white markings made it look as though he had six eyes as well. It is ultimately a costume.

You see a large kobold with four obvious limb replacements, the limbs being a stark white. He keeps his arms crossed, but you can see a black 5 printed on his forearms, and on his shins. He wears a pair of goggles, darkened, and he wears no armor save a short suit-like covering. He might be looking over at you, but you can't tell, thanks to the goggles.

A rounded, symbological eye wrought from dark iron hangs over the altar of white marble. You can see a number of items by the altar, a chalice and also a small rod.

The chalice has numerous images in shell of beings, both demon and angel, being cast away from the cup as it is used by a kobold to spray water. It glows with an aura of transmutation. The hand grasps hold of a support, and soon Turen has pulled himself up.

Way I see it, we have three possible leads. First, we have our Elven friend (I forget his name). He's a friend and an adventu- I mean, profiteer. So, if anything would be happening on the surface, he would know it.

Second, we have our resident dragon wyrmling. I'm not exactly sure how developed he is, but, IIRC, dragons retain a degree of genetic memory. Therefore, things like centers of draconic power might be within those memory banks.

Finally, we could relocate the half-dragon half-lizardman. We saved him from his prison chamber (even with the lost but later rejuvenated hands), and he kind of disappeared after that. So, since he's definitively "fresher" in his draconic ancestry, he might know of something.

These options are organized by order of importance and ease.

Let us talk to arrange a meeting with our Elven friend. If anyone would know where to start looking for leads on the surface, i

My mutation occurred when the two's lines crossed. My body makes draconic blood." He sighs, gruffly. "It does make me different from people in some ways, but for the most part, I am one of the Jhwaladheem." He pronounces the last word smoothly, with high accented vowels. "The surfacers call us the "cold plains lizardmen". We were the only of our kind for many long years until the swamp lizardmen were created. The way they say they were created was through some use of magic, and men from a distant land." He sighs. "A land where the ancient writings said dragons had flown to. They came with dragon's blood, and came up north. They observed our gnolls, said they had made some similar to them, and traded with us, observed our people. Then they went back into the swamps and never again emerged." He shrugs. "This is something all would-be princes are forced to know."

He was a young up and comer who quickly took the throne when the king of their clan died." He makes a croaking grunt. "He's smart. And he's got draconic blood as strong as mine." Slam'lok snorts. "He has six wings, too. Fast as a devil, and has a good sense of folks too." He pauses. "Who ever heard of a dragon with six wings, though? My guess is that it's some sort of mutation, like my mutation to have a sightly acidic bite."

"So he is dragon-blooded, then. What kind of government and political system does your nation use? Was it a confederation of kingdoms?" You ask Slam'lok.

"A kingdom. That of Skaskenak the second." Slam'lok says. "They are careful about trading. Most surface humans don't know they exist. They tend to put a lot of emphasis on their old gods and on the respect of elders." He looks at you head-long, sitting down on one of the chairs in his room. "I wouldn't put much faith in the law, now that G'tassh has got his tyrannical claws on it. He calls himself Zanerak, the name of one of the old dragon gods."

"Not exactly." Slam'lok says. "He is my cousin on my father's side. Therefore, I feel responsible for what he has done. I should have stopped him."

The lizardman waves his hand dismissively after a moment's hesitation. "Do not concern yourself. He is an enemy of the people now, and must be brought down."

"They are on a hill far to the west." Slam'lok says. "Probably not so far for someone who can teleport." He points upwards. "They align perfectly with a few stars, and have few carvings aside from these small, round holes." Slam'lok nods. "I've seen it once at sunset. It was beautiful... And terrifying."

"What terrified you? What did you see? What did you *feel*?" You ask, seeming driven on to ask by something deep in your mind.

Slam'lok looks away, his eyes going out of focus. "That there was no way that the ancient lizardmen made that artifact. The stars only come into formation during moonless nights, and their limited night vision wouldn't let them build a damn thing. If it was me, or some other dragon-blood, it'd be possible." He pauses. "With stones that big, you need a team to get the right leverage to stand them up. Doesn't matter much how strong one man on the team is." He shivers. "And that twisted crown, of near-blooming reds and browns, with streaks of brilliant orange along the vines. The brilliant yellow of his garb." Slam'lok grabs his head with one hand, staring a hole into the wall as he staggers over. "Yes, it will be forever burned in my mind. That horrifying, wonderful visage."

"Show you personally, no." Slam'ok says, snatching the paper. "I am required by our law to stay away from anywhere his grasp might reach. You are strong enough that even if he attacked you, you'd stand a chance." The black-scaled lizardman sketched out the ring of stones from an overhead map.

"What else can you tell me about G'tassh?" You ask the lizardman. "How strong is his guard? How loyal? How many men may he call upon in times of need? What resources are valued in your kingdom?"

"His guard is the Five Serpents." Slam'lok says. "In our culture, serpents are seen as the totem animal of many dedicated martial artists. The Five Serpents are masters of their own kinds of martial arts, one for each of the elements." He pauses at your confused expression."Fire, water, earth, air, and wood. These are the only guards he claims he needs."
