What makes a good quest thread?

I've been reading over past quests and taking notes, because I really like the idea, but have never started one and am daunted by failure.
    >> Anonymous 11/09/11(Wed)16:09 No.16897675
Well, action, with lot of interactive and a good dm who can adapt the ideas.

And if the quest it's well written and it's interesting much better.
    >> Anonymous 11/09/11(Wed)16:11 No.16897684
The best quest threads have almost invariably been run by drunk people, too drunk to care that /tg/ is being just as nonsensical as usual, but not drunk enough that their ability to write creatively and with proper grammar is impacted.

    >And if the quest it's well written and it's interesting much better.

Would posters be willing to sacrifice speedy responses in exchange for more detail? I mean, that's really a specific question, better answered by the posters of the thread, but to the best of your knowledge, perhaps?

    >>16897684

I live by nonsensical. And by the seat of my pants.
    >> Anonymous 11/09/11(Wed)16:15 No.16897724
First, something for people to WANT to play. Some gimmick that gets them wanting to play.

Viable rewards are always good. Random number sheets only draw in so many. Performing a kick ass feat and getting a reward short after? Keeps people coming back.

Good characters and plot are needed as well. Need that supporting cast and backdrop to lure people in.

Simplicity. Use one dice, stick to it. Don't have endless number sheets (Sometimes) Make it easy to keep track of the progress.

Scheduling. Same time, same place, every week. People will mark their calenders to make sure they can join if you do it right.

Do not be afraid to fail. Unless you strike gold, you will fail a few quest threads before you finally get a keeper.

Player input. Most vital thing to the story, they are why you are running a quest, not writing a story. Regardless of what they say, do it, provided you get a majority vote. Wackiness is !!un!!

Drawings. If you got a friend who can draw, can draw yourself, or would put your scribbles up to the test, do so. Visualizing is a lot easier with pretty pictures!

Read Mutant Quest, Empire Quest, Vagrant Quest, and the recent Inqusiquest for inspiration.

The best thing to do is to have a dice rolling system, to merge suggestions, and to establish a consistent character for the quest persona early on.

Ignore "HURR DURR FAP" unless it's arguably in-character and supported by a lot of at least decently high rolls. That said, ignore rolls if they're obviously terrible suggestions and there's an alternative with a close roll that's more sensible. Also, consider limiting rolls to the first three or five or something.

Well depending on the quest, perhaps. I run TG quest, and generally I try to wait ten minutes at least before moving things to give everyone in the thread a chance to weigh in. If it's a big decision, I give more time. And while I wait, I type up as much quest text as can be made without a solid decision in Word. However, this approach doesn't always work, I saw an anon flip his shit while waiting 30 minutes for the LoveQuest dude to respond in that quest.

That being said I've seen some successful quests do short but speedy responses and some do slow but detailed responses. So perhaps it's just a question of how it all comes together.

It seems to help if you can draw or doodle your own graphics, most notably in BooneQuest, but also in things like last night's LoveQuest. I've been thinking of experimenting with some MS Paint stuff.

Also remember that if you include a female character /tg/ will generally try to fuck it, and if none are provided attempts to construct one may very well be made.

This is not exclusive to humanoid characters, nor even mammals. At one point /tg/ was directing a giant crab in its conquest of the ocean, as well as its creation of a crab/shrimp/lobster harem.

should probably make a list of /tg/ rules for quests

"Rule 7: given the means /tg/ will attempt to conquer everything."

and its corollary "Rule 8 if the means aren't available /tg/ will endeavor to acquire them."

    something like that.

Am I going the right way here?

Interesting characters, good dialogue, and upward mobility. The last part is very important, the feeling of accomplishment that comes from gaining something can keep people hooked. Doppelganger Damacy was a good example of this.

It depends, the quests are many of the kind. There is no "tried and true recepie" for a Quest thread. There were drawquests where drawfags drew EVERYTHING and there were minimal details and there were full text quests. There were slow ons and fast ones. All types had successes and failures.

Oh, god. Yes. And even where the whole 'harems' bit could be done without being too far out, it kicks up a hell of a shitstorm.

Offering a few flavors of deginated-waifu tends to reduce it somewhat, but christ, /tg/ can get its panties in a twist over this stuff.

The most important thing is that the posts are written well and properly, minor spelling and grammar errors are generally ignored if the writing is good, but major ones tend to destroy the mood and pacing of even the best writing, and without the writing being interesting it will go nowhere in the first place.

Also try to type up your responses in a word processor before you post them it's a bit of extra work, but the spell check helps and multiple post responses go faster.

There is no 'true' formula, but it's rare to see a resource or management quest go unattended. Anything where you're -commanding- seems to garner an audience.

Many quest threads try to give the illusion of free choice, such as do A or B or C first, when you must do them all. Or require that you follow through with an action when you really don't have to. That's an easy way to piss off everyone.

Don't give meaningless choices during the quest.

    Well, there are different styles
    .
Brain in a Jar always was rather slow but wrote like it was a friggin novel with really good characters and some intense social interaction.
And I mean real good stuff.
Bodysnatcher Quest got the players discussing morality and the nature of the character's self.
And somehow he managed to make female PC and NPC whom nobody (except the random shitposter) tried to go get fucked.
In this there was little room for random decisions but it therefore enabled great in-character speeches and depth.

On the other side there are the "ruler" quests like Bug Colony or Board Quest.
They generally have lots of space for decisions to make, but also carries the risk breaking a system or fucking it all up with a bad decision.

In terms of sexuality, there are funnily enough no real rules to safely follow. Sometimes there will be no objection to interbreeding your people with naga, on another occasion people flip over because there is a female character.

Oh and be ready to get sexas a solution to about every problem. Or violence, brutal, pointless violence.
    >> Anonymous 11/09/11(Wed)16:38 No.16897928

Farming it quest is a good example of how to roll from a medium speed. usually the responses tend to be speedy(it seems to vary with Farmer and his habit of ditching for shit like work.)

But, he also does things like extensive posts on the world and right now is actually discussing what the fuck is going on with things like a ghoul digging around in the garden why a random fucking elf managed to find Bill son of john by smell, why there's a fae that bestows magic and why saffron is a goddamn miracle drug in this world.

Some people on /tg/ really dislike quest threads. There have also been periods in the past where the number of quest threads rose and provoked more intense dislike from a larger number of people.

If you see a lot of quests on the board, it might be best to wait a few months before trying to run one. Particularly if there's a lot of hate directed at them.

Can someone explain me the influx of new quests which use this system? It is horrible. Makes planning impossible and can turn a character into a Charismatic gentleman diplomat one post and into a Mindless rape-it-all shit-flinging baboon the next.
Even worse are "2d12, first decides the action, second decides the success" type of systems.

Quest Threads are some of the best things every created by /tg/ and are a creation entirely our own.

They allow creative thought to mix with group decision, and lead to entirely new stories, characters, plots, and thoughts for us to enjoy.

I join a few quests here or there, one of my most active ones being Slug Quest. It was a great time, and I loved watching as the quest unfolded, my input having some part of the actions therein.

If you don't like them, you can always hide them and not join. It's not like anyone cares what you have to say, we are having fun.

Another tip, OP, Fuck the Nay Sayers. They just hate to hate, and try to bring down your creation, rather then help improve it.

That's not even the half of it. The char murdered a messenger in cold blood like and animal and used his body to fertilize the field just because he stepped over the crops.

If you are curious why and how that happened, it was the result of "highest-roll-decides", a suggestion which had no backing from anyone.
So here is a good example how the quest could go WRONG with that system... although we managed to turn it for the better now thought we are still dealing with the fallout.

Can you scribble? Would you be willing to shell out to by a cheap tablet so you could draw easier to a digital medium?

You could create an entire quest about a scribble's quest to become an actual drawing, and the wacky additions to the scenery, characters, and itself it would have to change with.

Yes, the quest progression would rely on your own personnel drawing skill, but if you want to draw AND do a quest, well... There ya go!

[I knew someone was going to mention EVO]
You know why it works in EVO? Because the DM of that quest uses the same die for success-rate. Pretty much no one else does that, and for a good reason, because that removes and sense of challenge whats-so-ever.
During the entire quest, there was only one time where we genuinely were under danger and that was because of shitty planning and even shittier rolls (failing on 3 rolls? Very unlikely).

I like the EVO quest, do not get me wrong but in terms of difficulty that game is very easy.

Another thing about EVO, unlike other quests in provides almost 100% freedom. We can do pretty much everything because there are almost no limits to what the main character can do and has the potential to do. Do not expect the same from other quests.

Has anyone attempted modifiers with dice?
Like a character will be exceptionally good at doing a certain thing, and thus when it's time to roll for the success of an action relating to that thing, the character gets a bonus?
To clarify, say a character is good at cooking, when it comes time to roll for how good a meal they made, it would be something like dice+1d100+25.

loot and xp lots of them... also character development.
see not just the stats go up, i have noticed many characters change subtly as they go on. if the player lets experiences seep into his play that is awesome.

see, when i dm i tend to write up xp for every little shit they do. they say something witty, or just think in the right direction or epically mess up, or get wounded it's xp. so they level up as they go. also i always reward both ingenuity and faithfulness to character with stuff.

now the second thing i like to do is enemies that are hard to kill, and the fight kinda becomes personal after a while... party member picking most hated enemies getting almost crazy for their blood.

of course in the end the characters usually win but it's never easy and they will feel like celebrating.

rewarding wounds and fuckups with xp and not rewarding easy kills. let the characters to cook up their own epic battles by being unreasonable and letting them escape by some miracle...

    So far, I have:

    >Awakening
You find out you're one of the Awakened, a very small group of individuals with some extraordinary abilities. Shenanigans and shapeshifting ensue.

    >PrinceQuest
You're a prince who's escaping from an invading army with a priceless artifact and a vow to take back what you've lost.

    >EmpathQuest

    >EmpathQuest
This... This could go BIG places.

They're all solid ideas. You just have to brace for what /tg/ is going to think of a little bit ahead of time. Aim high, and the players will follow.

that gives a lot of freedom in the beginning.
players might get lazy and morale will crumble and the party will start throwing chips and shit...

after you got their characters (which usually takes about an afternoon) it's best to throw them in some hot situation right away. after they done fighting for their lives they might be better attuned to the game.

also a good dm must be ready to react to the most insignificant things... like shutting down characters actions "i go see what's behind the tapestry..." "nothing" is kinda good way to kill initiative.

making a mess out of the smallest gestures they make is really entertaining and will make them focus on how their character behaves.

players will most probably not go down on the route you planned for them. given choice they will choose to make your hair gray if you try to map out their journey before. instead create detailed episodes (also locations and npc-s) that can be thrown in at one time no matter how much they resist your original plans.

I've noticed that /tg/ doesn't actually like map based tactical stuff very much. I think that's reasonable. There's a contradiction between "let every anon wander in and give directions" and "have a tight system of rules that you need to understand to play well, where a shitty move can lead to quest ruining consequences."

Skirmish quest is the exception to this because it's fucking beautiful, it's hit critical mass where lots of people want to play and are willing to show up repeatedly and learn the rules, and if someone makes a shitty move and dies, it doesn't really derail the overall plot.

Have a clear, short term goal to work towards, don't plan how the players will get there because they sure as fuck wont do what you expect them to do, and remember: If they have a better idea than you do, change plans and run with theirs.

I've always wanted to run something I call "game of hunters quest"

you're out walking one evening see some shit and (player dependent) do some shit that gets the protagonist inducted into (or at least involved with) an ancient order of monster hunters. giving way to new items everywhere.

Also thinking of starting a quest thread, got four or so ideas, feedback would be super awesome.

    >Maurheim Quest
Modern magic in a grimdark capitalist dystopia (more Tolkien/environmental magic, not just hurr fireballs). This one is probably the one I'm most tentative about, as I'm not sure if I can pull of grimdark on /tg/
    >Superball Quest
Simplistic future sport where all athletes are superheroes or some other gimmick. Player is a prospect going into the draft, put a lot of focus on the day-to-day lifestyle of an athlete.
    >Space Worm Quest
Earth gets swallowed by a giant worm. Could go anywhere with this, really. RTS, story-based intrigue, Zelda combat/dungeon crawling, you name it.
    >Genie Quest
You're a genie in the vein of Aladdin. Lamp gets picked up by various people, you grant their wishes (with lots of room for dickish purposeful misinterpretation)

Would you play any of these or should I just not bother.

    Quest advice thread?

So I ran two threads of Space Princess Quest.
    http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/16845457/
    http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/16892863/

Don't bother to read all of the way through; it's minimally entertaining. It's a 70s/80s cheap Italian scifiverse thing with combat mechanics stolen from Final Fight.

Anyway here's my problem. I can't draw, but I enjoy drawing, so I've been preparing a few drawings in advance (taking forever on each one) and using them. This works really well for fights, cutscene fight setups, and avatarfagging, but it works really shittily for everything else. Everything else being, of course, most of what /tg/ wants.

I think I just need to rely more heavily on character interaction talky bits as a way to set up goals/obstacles, and then make the resulting fights go about four times faster. Is there anything obvious I'm missing?

I'd probably just abandon it normally, but I feel kind of obligated to not give up on it after the awesome art Weremole did.

    Hello.

I've been thinking about running a quest (i intend to wait until things quiet down a little and i have more time to devote), but the dice system i intend to use doesn't lend itself to user rolls.

As a random sample of /tg/ denizendry, what do you all think of 'action' rolls taking place behind the scene, possibly to the extent that only character level-up rolls would be in the players' hands?

I sort of meant that the system i have in mind would involve a few dicepool rolls, possibly with modifiers, per 'round' of action, which doesn't really suit itself to our dice generator here.

I could farm out the individual dicepool rolls to players, but then i'd need at least that many people actually playing in my thread, which seems... not guaranteed.

I've been playing around the idea of gming a game for this DBZ table-top game I found out about online (apperantly it's rather old) so I figured, hey if this is technically tg accepted why can't I do a Saiyan's Quest. Set it up pre-Frieza blowing up the planet. Players play a second class saiyan, above third class and elite, he's able to choose a team, go on missions assigned to him by Frieza's command and explore the universe as a whole.

But then people would call me a weeaboo and yell at me for trying to do something different.

The fuck? I haven't been in an Abaddon Quest thread since the eldar fleet attacked. When did this happen?

It was in the September thread. I revealed that the two headed Alpha Legion dreadnought was actually Alpharius and Omegon in disguise.

Then they had a wraith-giant hold them up while the champions beat the two of them to near death like a pair of pinatas.

I agree, most of the quest threads are shit, but there are a few great ones. The microscope quest thread yesterday was really cool once you get the core concept and E.V.O quest was quite entertaining.

The 90% law is true for quests too. The exceptions are really, really good, like Mutant Quest, Empire Quest, and Inquisiquest.
