58 KB Space Cowboy Marines Anonymous 10/26/11(Wed)21:23 No.16747874
Hey /tg/ I just realized something. There are SM chapters for just about every stereotyped group of people, only in Space. There are Space Vampires, Space Vikings (with bonus Space Werewolves), Space Romans/Greeks/Mongols/Scots/Axtecs, etc. Only there are no Space Cowboys? Would it be cool to have a chapter that all speak in a drawl and pride themselves on accuracy with their bolt pistols?

    Might as Well Contribute,

Lone Stars is a good name

Characters should be modelled with hats

    Chapter master has no name

Good with bolt pistols, So abnormal ballistic skill

    Based on a Frontier world

Extremely codex divergent, problem with authority

    Bounty Hunter tendencies?

Any one have ideas for a colour scheme? i was thinking a leather brown with sky blue shoulder plates, maybe modelling some green stuff ponchos for some marines.

...employs and unorthodox patern bolt pistols with more precise firing mechanisms, for if they were to use a normal bolter pistol, the sheer speed and force of their draw would cause the gun to discharge before the shot was properly aimed. The pistol also features a small powered blade at the bottom of the grip, which is often used in a pinch to cripple or even decapitate foes unlucky enough to enter melee range.

Also the dreads are all MkIV so they can wear cowboy hats. Speaking of the hats, we need to invent an animal native to their homeworld whose hide is so tough that if you make a hat out of it it protects just as well as a full helmet, and maybe even grants a 00-15 field save or something.

The cowboy hat should probably kept downplayed, like maybe only Captains and Characters really wear them. You don't see every single Ultramarine wearing nothing but laurels, or every single Dark Angels with feather headresses, but you do see them. Maybe incorporate the cowboy hat into the marine helmet somehow? I feel like if we get a cowboy hat on every single one of them then we just teeter towards "Space Wolves Syndrome" where they are overloaded on iconography and symbolism.

Techpriests in this chapter should be rare, but incredibly valuable, as they service the highly customized bikes, dreadnaughts, and specialized weaponry of these cowboy marines. The reason why they're rare is because the Tech Priesthood views the custom weaponry of the chapter as close to heretical, as the maverick chapter rarely goes out of their way to get approval for anything, much less asking for permission to modify their weapons.

    >"Having been a member of Black Templar crusades I am not unfamiliar with travelling chapters, but the strange, almost archaic, habitats enshrined by this chapter gave me pause. Instead of a normal agro facility one entire deck was an abandoned wreck, covered in strange plants with barbs, dust so thick it was packed into stone, and large number of vicious animals the servitors called 'kay-otes.' Which I was told are a native to the world of the chapter's founding.

    >'The ritual was to be my objective, as I was tasked by my lord to witness it for any inconsistencies since the chapter's last evaluation two hundred and fifty-seven years prior.

    >'He was presented his stations of office by the head librarian who shocked me with his dress. His power armor, instead of the normally formal browns and blues of the marines and sergeants respectively, was deep tan. Every inch was covered by scrimshawed runes that had then been colored. The Liberian himself bore a great feathered headdress and a mighty staff made of wood and bone. His force weapon was a similarly feathered axe of miniscule size. Morbidly I noted several batches of hair hanging from his waist. When I asked later I was informed they were the scalps of traitors and heretic psykers.

    >'The badges of office mentioned earlier are the below items: One iron halo in the form of a bright five pointed star affixed to the left side of the chapter master's chest, directly over their first heart. And an ancient stub revolver that must be as old as the chapter itself. The gun was made for a space marine as the fully gauntleted fingers easily slipped around the weapon. It was holstered on his hip and then drawn with speed beyond even my Death cultist's eyes. The six shots that rang out hit above six stone tablets made to honor previous chapter masters.

    >"Finally the chapter master holstered the ancient weapon and took up his normal fire arm, a massive and more modern version of the previous easily recognizable as a Bolt weapon.

    >"Mount up boys," he drawled to his men, "Daylight's burnin' and the Emporah don't forgive laziness."

    >"Emperor and the great sun protect." His men replied.

Eldar cause their sneaky, quick buggers that can just meld into the countryside, and Chaos for the mysticism angle Indians got.

    >Combatants: Elements of the Lone Star chapter/ Orkish Horde reference number 213xd23 lead by Warboss codenamed "Sant'A"naz da choppa"
    >Summary: My lords, it seems our reinforcement fleet was in fact too late, the once mighty fortress Alamo was found burned to the ground with only the central keep left, the site was littered with thousands of orkish dead along with the bodies of the noble Astartes who fell defending it. After the main body of my Imperial Guard forces land we set out to force battle with the brutes. Our forces moved in to find the Orkish forces disorganized and without a leader, it seems that the Company Commander of the Lone Stars dueled the foul beast in hand to hand combat, dispatching him in his last act. The orks were camped on the side of a swamp. After encircling them, placing units of the famed Catachan world in said swamp. The entire horde was drove into the kill zone. There were no survivors, all bodies were burned. The men of the campaign should be noted for their bravery, after seeing the destruction of the Fortress Alamo and the bravery and heroic sacrifice of the Astartes the men took up the rousing cheer of "REMEMBER THE ALAMO!"

Right but the analog for Injuns is Exodite Eldar. So they have ties ot the Exodite Eldar, and the terminology would stem from that. "Spirit Talkers" or "Spirit Walkers" would be their Librarians, or something like that.

The infinity circuits of an Exodite world are called "World Spirits" and are tied to a bunch of sacred spaces (sacred burial ground Native American analog here) scattered across the planet that are either like, valleys full of crystals or weird stone-henge like structures.

It's completely reasonable to have Lone Star vs Exodite skirmishes over these "sacred grounds" in a perfect Western motif. Lone Star "Spirit Talkers" in some way recognizing their power and, well, being able to talk to the spirits housed in them.

The chapter is quite resource poor, or comes from somewhere that is. This explains much of the rough and ready aesthetic we're trying to mesh them with.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chapter members and kit tend to have a worn, gritty, even dirty look to them, simply because they see much heavy use without frequent opportunity or infrastructure for ideal maintenance levels, and because scarcities makes the preservation and passing on of old equipment common; a scout might likely use a common, decades old pistol bequeathed to him by an older battle-brother, who himself recieved it as a gift from one of his mentors. By and large marines from this chapter don't use chainswords, because they don't have a lot of them, or because a mundane blade has less breakable parts, etcetera. So instead they use massive Bowie-shaped combat knives or a second bolt pistol. Their Scouts tend to prefer Shotguns over Bolters, as with the right loads they're almost as strong for much less resources- Bolt rounds are valuable and ought to be conserved.

Bolt Revolvers are very commonplace, due to their ability to pack a bolt round's full punch while using a considerably simpler and more robust gun mechanism, even lauded over regular Bolt Pistols by many within the Chapter because the limitation to a handful of rounds per cylinder encourages the development of superior marksmanship and ammo conservation. Because the mechanism of a bolt revolver is so easy to manufacture compared to a conventional bolt pistol, and because reloading them can take more time than is wise in the midst of a firefight, many marines carry more than one bolt revolver, though generally not more than two.

The Chapter's homeworld is, overall, temperate, but at the same time kind of a dusty place, full of deserts, plains, badlands, and grasslands. It's inhabited by many extremely dangerous native species, such as giant ursinoids, venemous snakes and arachnids, vicious packs of wild canines, and several varieties of deadly wildcats. It has multiple distinct populating civilizations, and the overall technology level is low, meaning that a successful life is often a hard one, but for that also one that a man can be proud of. Though their weapons haven't really reached past the earlier stages of stub firearms, the Imperium's ability to manufacture mountains of them for peanuts without batting an eyelash means that the prevalence and ownership of weaponry is massive amongst the world's citizens. Here, man who cannot use a gun is a man without proper life skills and education.

One of these groups is as marked by its fractiousness as by its loose unity; they are the closest descendants of foreign Imperial colonists from millenia ago, whose culture revolves around agriculture and animal husbandry, and prizes self-reliance. As one of the strongest bastions of Imperial culture on the planet, they are amongst the most prominent; only loosely governed, and largely left to their own devices and means. As such, civilized areas are sparse and tight-knit, bound together by ties of community and the development of a sort of warrior's code for the common man serving to enforce notions of honor, law, and justice. Outside of the agricultural areas, the planet is inhabited by many nations and nomadic tribes of indigenous humans from before Imperial colonization; these groups, though they officially gave their allegiance to the Emperor during the world's annexation millenia ago, do not see themselves as beholden to the colonists' government, only to the greater Imperium, and as such are forever in a state of tenuous and uneasy relations with one another and the settlers; feuds, raiding, and outright warfare are not uncommon. It is a harsh and a rough world for this reason, but the harshness breeds strength of body and character in all sides, and as such provides many suitable recruitment populations for the Chapter to draw from.

I tell ya boys, this town was in a bad way. See, we had bandits an’ xenos comin’ out of the woodwork, tryin’ to harm us Emperor fearin’ folk. We was here to dig up that black gold, prometheam from underneath the sands. The town was doin’ right prosperous, till we ran afoul of some of them damn raiders. Chaos boys, wouldn’t ya know. There leader was a right damned creature, faster’n anys come before. Many a sheriff fell to ‘im. One day though son, a stranger visited our little town…

A hush fell over the mumbled conversations occurring at the shadowed tables; the dancing tune that was being played on the piano died away. All eyes turned to the swayin’ doors, and the figure that had entered. Encased in battered power armour caked with trail-dust, the towering figure halted just past the doorframe. The silhouette from the burnin’ desert sun outside highlighted his massive frame. A veritable giant, he was. Smoke wafted from a lho stick jutting from a corner of his grim mouth. Eyes like cold hunks of coal surveyed the room from underneath a wide-brim leather hat. Belts hung about the strangers waist; with glinting gun metal shinin’ in the holster by his side through the bullet-torn duster he wore. His stride brought him up to the bar, spurs clinkin’ with each step.

Their leader bore a massive double barreled rifle under one arm and had raised his side arm, an equally large bolt pistol, into the air. Each marine beside him had instead of the normal helmet face, a skull like countenance. Some had even wrapped fabric bearing their chapter’s symbols around their necks.
    >He stepped forward spinning and holstering his weapon with a speed that dumbfounded me. ”Ya’ll seem to have a problem. Them green-skins will be here in three days.”
    >When I inquired to the plan of action. The lead Marine turned on his heal, a slight jingling sound coming from two metal spurs in the shape of stars on his heels was the only answer I received.
    >Three days went by very fast.
    >As the Orks charged Graknuch tore through the lines his heretically enhanced grox bearing right for me, my command unit, and the Stormlord.
    >As he raised his enhanced left fist to pummel the air the Marine’s leader leapt from behind our lines on a massive motorcycle. It’s front plate replaced with the skull of a grox or horse of some kind, its design more akin to an ork war bike than a marine’s holy implement of war.

“A bottle of sacra, iffin’ ya would.” The stranger’s voice ground like a rockslide, spurrin’ the bartender to action. The stranger flipped a throne onto the counter as a gesture of thanks, and reached for the bottle. Before he could grab it, though, it was snatched up by a black gloved hand. Turning, the stranger came face to face with seven of the most feared outlaws plaguin’ this planet. They was part of Snakeeye’s gang, blasphemous deviants all. The black gloved feller’ took a long swig o’ sacra. “Thank e’ for the drink stranger,” the bandit hissed through missing teeth. The stranger turned back to the bartender and raised his finger for another bottle. Like the strike of a rattler’ that bandit drew steel an’ shot the bartender dead. “A’m sorry stranger, but I don’t like being ignored.”

Getting’ up from where he was sitting, the stranger towered of the gang. “Naw, I reckon’ you don’t.” An’ with little more’n a blur to show what had happened all five bandits was dead on the ground, a bullet hole clean through their skull. Whipping back his coat the stranger holstered his gun; a massive chrome bolter, six chambered an’ covered in the Emperor’s own prayers, bless ‘im. The giant grabbed the bottle from the lifeless hands of the black gloved devil an’ took a long draw.

Ever heard of Blood Meridian by McCormick. There a character in there, a scalp hunter who goes by the name of Judge Holden. For a quick rundown, he's:

a mysterious figure, a cold-blooded killer, and a pedophile. Aside from the children he openly kills, he is seen enticing children with sweets, he has a naked 12 year old girl in his room, and a child often goes missing when he is in the vicinity. Holden displays a preternatural breadth of knowledge and skills — paleontology, archaeology, linguistics, law, technical drawing, geology, chemistry, prestidigitation, and philosophy, to name a few.
He is extremely tall, massive in frame, and enormously strong, capable of holding and wielding a Howitzer cannon much like a regular gun. His skin is so pale as to have almost no pigment. He is entirely hairless, not even having eyebrows or eyelashes. This strange appearance, as well as his keen, extremely fast reflexes, strength, apparent immunity to sleep and aging, and other abilities point to his being something other than human.

Course, that's just a basic rundown. He's much, much, much worse in the book.

Anyways, that's how I'd imagine the Chaos counterpart to these guys to be like.

The stranger didn’ get much rest though. A deafening boom sounded from outside the saloon, a gunshot like a thunderclap from the warp. The stranger knew exactly what it was; a challenge. On the dirt road outside stood Snakeeyes, frothing at the bit an’ waving his pistols inta the sky. Snakeeye was an ancient bastard, of the same super-human ilk as the stranger. He’d been robbin’ and lootin’ since them Heresy days, and causin’ endless trouble for us simple folk. Seein’ the stranger sent him inta a fury, roaring an’ raging his defiance. His red armour shone like blood in the sun; a hangman’s noose wrapped around his neck. The stranger stood before him, still as a tombstone. Their eyes met, flinty coals and burning embers.
Some unknown signal passed between them two giants, an’ the stranger whipped back a flap of his coat, sliding metal outta that leather faster’s a heart’s beat. Glinting in the sun, that silver bolt buried itself fist deep in ol’ Snakeeye’s patch-work face. A second later nothing’ was left but a ragged stump a’ bleeding meat. Drawin’ a life bigger n’ my arm the stranger carved a line inta his pistol. Son, I tell you, I tried to count the marks, but I lost track. Pullin’ down the brim of his hat the stranger let out a sharp whistle, and over came a monster of a horse. Effortless, that giant hefted himself onto the steed, an’ road off in the direction of the sun. We ain’t had no more bandits here since.

    >The roar Graknuch and his bestial escort unleash drowned out the sound of the marine’s ridiculous engine as he drew his double barreled weapon and fired. Five shots sent burning plasma into Graknuch’s escort. Discarding the weapon the Marine drew his bolt pistol and aimed. Three shots: one for Graknuch’s prized Powerklaw, one for the even more prized war grox, and one for Graknuch’s head.
    >The beast rolled to a stop depositing the corpse of the Warboss at the marine’s bike’s front wheel. “Whelp.” He said, removing his helmet and scratching his stubble covered face, “Guess the boys can handle the rest.”
    >The remaining marines proceeded to command and destroy the various lieutenants that tried to rally the Waaagh! in Graknuch’s place before they approached me, thanked me for a ‘Damn fine job of teachin’ these boys to shoot straight’ and left. I would also wish to include smoke rings, of prescribed incense of course, to be added to the fifth and Ready’s weekly rounds of worship. Justification added as addendums to this file.

Yeah, and it fits the Exodite = Indians thing. The Exodites have all these stories about crazy monsters and shit, so a native just assumes that it's all weird Exodite stories.

Then that night round a campfire your posse's Spirit-Talker gets all distant and spooky and busts out, "Those aren't stories. They're warnings. The Exodites been dealin' with them longer than us."

The "Lone Star" they're named after is an old legend:

Can this be the basis for their tanks? Please....

Also you could work in a "civil war" aspect that a lot of the old west movies had, where ex confederate soldiers had to work with Union soldiers out west after the war. Maybe work in a civil war on the planet between to large factions, the marines refused to help either side, they watched. When soldiers showed intense bravery and skill, they would be snatched from death and turned into marines. Much like the Space Wolves do.

Could make for just some interesting flavor in the chapter. Thats just me, iv always got a hard on for the ACW

Building off that... what if this Chapter has no fleet, no space navy, kind of a lost chapter? They've got no real way to articulate shit the Navigators would know...

They've got no Crux Terminatus, instead they got another badge:

This is a chapter of riders, and they ride hard- If you're will is strong, and you do right by the Aquila... maybe their Spirit-Talkers can work out a little deal with the spirits. The good spirits, they say, they let you ride the stars. You wear the badge of the Ghost Rider, and there is no distance you can't cross.

(Spoiler: Spirit-Talkers and Ghost Riders can use the webway.)

Give em decrepit old shitty ships, barely can make it out anywhere. Give em a system to look out for. Almost beyond the light of the astronomicon. On the edge near Eldar centric space, lots of exodite worlds. Encounters with Necrons, Eldar, Orks are the most numerous. Tyranids have been encountered and are very respected as a very very very deadly foe. Chaos does happen, but more isolated demons and heretics and less WE ARE LEGION CSM. I'm not sure what you guys are liking but I'll try.

Tombstone is a planet of mostly grasslands and deserts. It has hostile creatures covering it including dozens of Ork bands, Eldar webways, and small amounts of Necrons bases which attract the Eldar. The world is rich in Promethium and is covered in ancient railways.

Each town has a single Space Marine in it acting as the town enforcer. He protects the town, enforces the emperor's will and scouts for recruits. Some times they train a rookie or two.

Chaos is rare on the world but not absent from the world.
There is no official guardsmen regiments but each person has a weapon on the world due to the lawlessness of Tombstone.

    [Insert stuff about initiate rites]

Used to have trouble with this one guy, giant in huge red armor.
A vicious killer, who wielded his pistols with the speed of a daemon.
20 Arbites had gone to deal with him.
    20 Arbites were dead.
One day this guy in similar armor with a big pistol on his hip comes into town.
Cept his armor is black and he's got his face covered.
Everyone's avoiding him cause we figure he's the giant in red's buddy.
The guy in black tells us he's Astartes, and he's looking for the Red Giant.
Now, of course, we don't want to tell him, cuz he'll just end up like them Arbites.
Either way news reaches the giant and he comes into town to make it 21.
Early morning the Red Giant and Black Astartes face off in the street.
The Red Giant goes for his pistols, and
    BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

Unless I'm mistaken, Tau live in the Galactic North. These guys should obviously live to the Galactic West, meaning they'd not often see Tau.

Northern latitudes are like Montanna or something.

It should be important that they have some way to rally the marines stationed in each town; like some sort of visible satellite.
    REFLECTIVE SPACE STATION.
    THE DAWN STAR.

Also, very few terminator armor suits/vehicles. Mostly scout units.

Orks, Eldar, and Necrons is a bit excessive. Why not just feral Orks (Deff Skull descendants = bandits, Snakebites = cliche villain Indians) and Exodites (less one-dimensional Indians, and capable of allying with the humans).

    Pretty much this.

And frankly, I'm a little troubled by /tg/'s need to turn everything into Space Marines.

How many chapters is /tg/ up to by now?

We need to do terminators and vehicles.

I think that they should have only 4-5 terminator suits for the whole chapter. Heavily modified to carry a lot of firepower or something. Maybe Terminator Revolver for a sidearm and non-attached assault cannons with dual powerfists.

    vehicals are done.

Tanks are modeled after the Wild Wild West tanks, defilers are used as well. Pre Heresy dreads passed down over generations, Regular dreads as well. Only a few of them. Rhinos look like the lead car of old coal trains.

All I have in my head is a Sister of Battle convent singing Ecstasy of Gold. This Order could also be more explosives-oriented than other groups of the Sisterhood. Their more advanced Rhinos could be outfitted with drills, for helping to mine the promethium which fuels their obsession.

Do not question who waits for you in shadow.
