Exterminatus is the obliteration of a world's entire population through some form of weapon used from orbit or nearby space.
It is the most extreme method of dealing with some form of heresy, corruption or alien infiltration which has taken root within a planet's population. Accordingly it is only used in the most extreme of circumstances, when the level of corruption a world bears is so monumental that it cannot be wiped out by any other means. The destruction of the entire population is deemed necessary to prevent the contagion from spreading further.
Exterminatus is essentially one of the many tools in the armoury of the Imperium, used in those cases where complete destruction is deemed a better solution than more subvert or conventional methods. The world in question may have fallen to Chaos worship, or its Imperial government overthrown and replaced by the rule of aliens such as Genestealers, or it may be a non-Imperial world harbouring an extraordinarily powerful and dangerous species of alien. Exterminatus is often resorted to when the world is deemed to be not worth the amount of men and material that would be required to conquer or reclaim it. Exterminatus is very rarely used on planets vital or valuable to the Imperium.

Being a photographer is a tough thing.

You can be objective and report/take pictures and be a passive observer to catastrophes, horrors and evil- OR you can attempt to help.

In the end, the problem is that you become glorified and exalted because you chose to witness and record and report, rather than help when your aid could have been given.

Moreover, it's not like you can do both. Good pictures require good timing, positioning, angles, lighting and adjustments, you cant just leave the camera on auto and go help.

Such is the life of the photographer.
Occasionally you get a good day where your photography and reporting helps take criminals to jail...

But then you make yourself a target!

    So...

    Humanity:
Space Marines: Manly Men with clean-shaven faces and pipes, wearing Buck Rogers/Adam Strange-like helmets and skintight suits with jetpacks and oval pauldrons, and wielding rayguns.
Imperial Guard: The same, just more institutionalized. Not everyone is a muscular middle-aged white man: there are some youngsters, some skinny folks, some pudgy old men. Even some negroes and chinamen! Also, more nondescript helmets and costumes, no pauldrons, no jetpacks, maybe some modern-age military insignia. Think Dan Dare.
Sisters of Battle: Cheesecake space babes with spherical fishbowl helmets and sexy skintight suits. Most of the time need to be rescued by manly men of SM and IG.
Eldar: Tall beautiful wise humanoid aliens dressed in togas and living in crystal spires. An utopian advanced society. Think Krypton. Eldar chicks are almost all princesses, they are sexy and often fall in love with a handsome Imperial explorer. Or a James Bond-like Vindicare...
Dark Eldar: Vampires IN SPACE! Specifically, cheesy Elvira-like vampires.
Tau: Grey Aliens with flying saucers, anal probes, the stuff. They are not commies, they worship another Greater Good - SCIENCE! They need our brains and women FOR SCIENCE!
Vespid, Kroot etc: Various Space Monsters.
    Tyranids: Space Bugs.
Orks: Space green ape-like caveman brutes. They also need our women, though no one knows why.
Necrons: A variety of cheesy robots. They also sometimes need our women.
    Chaos: COMMUNISM.

Adeptus Mechanicus: Mad scientists. Think Dr.Sivana.
    Vindicare Assassins: Livii. Cognomen Livii.
Primarchs: Superheroes, especially the more mighty/"perfect" ones. Think Superman, Captain Marvel, Doc Savage. Yes, most of them can fly, leap over buildings, etc etc.

I'm thinking IG look like regular 1950s US Army soldiers, but with ray guns.

And Chaos is Soviets specifically, not communism in general. So in this setting Chaos and Tau would usually be on the same side, but wouldn't see eye-to-eye on everything and could occasionally be convinced to go against each other.
    >> Anonymous 09/11/11(Sun)10:05 No.16258612
    >>16258583
Yeah, but what can that difference be?

Imho, SM have their counterparts in the old sci-fi's intrepid space explorers (a la Buck Rogers).
The problem is, 50's spacemen's costumes are rather skintight and minimalistic, so the contrast between SM's bulky armor and IG's more proportionate uniforms is gone.

    What could IG be?
Starship/rocket crews a la Star Trek TOS?

I actually dunno about Gray!Tau being Communist.
I don't think I've ever seen a commie gray in 50s fiction (well, except Red Alert flying saucers, that is).

Most of the time, they're creepy fucks who steal people for SCIENCE, and SCIENCE seems to fit the role of a Greater Good, doesn't it?

Though, Imperial commissars will call Gray!Tau commies all the time - just like they'll call Eldar, DEldar, Orks, Tyranids and Necrons commies, too.

I think Chaos is more of a concept, rather than a nation. Thus it could be represented by COMMUNISM, and Chaos Chapters are like Cuba or North Korea - once Imperial countries, corrupted by CHAOMMUNISM.

When I think of 50s scifi, I think of things like lumbering robots and creatures that, while realistically laughable, were considered threatening and terrifying to the heroes they faced. I kinda see the Space Marines as being similar to that. Big guys in big, bulky, aluminum space-suits and domed helmets that are called the "greatest soldiers" as they slowly lumber onto the battlefield with big ray-guns and cheesy rocket-packs (I'm picturing a close-up of cheep pyrotechnics coming out of chrome nozzles, and then a faraway shot of the entire robot-like marine being lifted straight into the air by obvious cables, then a jump-cut to the him "landing" from about three inches above the ground). IMHO, the aesthetic works for them.
For the IG, I see entire squads of guys dressed in shiny, skin-tight polyester uniforms with outlandish helmets (see OP pic) and ridiculous ray-guns made up of antenna and glass tubes.

Marines: Fish bowl space suit dudes with rocket packs and big rayguns.

IG: Red shirts with funny helmets (maybe with a wing on top), goggles and small rayguns. 50's military gear painted in silvery colours and fitted with blinking lights and antennas, because they're 50's in SPAAAACE! Just replace machine guns with rayguns, cannons with big rayguns, etc.

Sisters: Your post war Rosy the Riveter gals with spunk, but still like to be called pretty and slapped in the ass from time to time. Can hold her own, unless there's any significant male character around, in which case they're shit.

Inquisition: Feds. Show up, flash a badge, make you spill your beans or tell you there are no such thing as flying saucers.

Admech: Science! Weird Science! Mad Science!

Navy: Bunch of pipe smoking, "Son, dem ruskies will not wanna talk to ya, so better git shootin'," types.

Eldar: Old and wise race that sees humanity leading up to their doom, because that's what they almost did. Plan 9 from Outer Space, The Day The Earth Stood Still, etc. Look human, but dress in fancy space alien suits. Their society has grown out of their primitive impulses (no they haven't) and take pity on the warring factions of the galaxy, like they were children.

Dark Eldar: Ming the merciless arch type?

Tau: Yes, bug eyes martians with fancy rayguns and saucers. For Science! And all the auxiliaries? Enslaved aliens or mutants made, through science!

Tyranids: Big space bugs. Attack of the Giant Spider, Blob, etc. A hive fleet is suppose to be a singular organism, so a big Godzilla is as good as a bunch of little space ants.

Orks: Any monster that's suppose to be smart enough for space travel, but acts like an animal when humans come along. What was that black and white movie that Carpenter turned into The Thing?

Necrons: Robots are good. Something like Cylons, but with more of a 50's look.

    Chaos: Brilliant.

I'm not even sure what I was talking about any more. I read a 50s pulp story called the Mechanical Monarch the other day which had these giant 'Metamen' cyborgs in it.

Anyway, yes, I guess what I was getting at is that Space Marines in 40k operate on a different level to other people and it feels like a 50s sci-fi is either going to have to fundamentally change them or drain them of character. If you make them Flash Gordon star rangers then you give them butt loads of personality and colour, but also take away their 'space marine' quality. They basically become storm troopers.

The heroes of 30-50s were eugenically perfect men with chiselled bodies and handsome faces. Imho they could have somewhat bulky space suits, but I agree that their faces should be left open.
There could be several different chapters with different looks, e.g.,:
    1. American chapter: Suits covered with American symbols, a la Cap America
    2. Man of the house chapter: Clean-shaven, clean-cut, perpetually smiling, chiselled chin, pipe-smoking, newspaper-reading. All have a nuclear family on their home planets, with happy wife in kitchen, and happy children watching Holo-TV.
    3. Adam Strange chapter - with finned helmets, oval pauldrons, the stuff.
    4. Muscle chapter - Doc Savage and "Hero of the beach". Huge chiselled bodies, very strong. Huge chins.
    etc.

What about Chaos gods? Marx, Trotsky, Lenin and Stalin? Stalin was the most brutal, so he should be Khorne. Marx wanted to change the worls, so Tzeentch, right? Lenin? He's a worshiped corpse, so Nurgle? That leaves Trotsky as Slaanesh. Or should we find someone else as Slaanesh? Che Guevara? He corrupts our kids with his ideals and seduces them to the leftist ways on campuses across the Imperium.

Not all heresy is Chaos. If we accept Chaos as communism, we must ask ourselves, what parties would prefer communism. Are gays communits? No. They might be renegades, but communist? Surely not.

As for TV hosts and such, commissars need to follow the troops. They need to be out there with them, not raising the morale of the people at home. That's the job for priests.

People who worship Stalin just want to crush all resistance before the might of communism.

People who worship Tzeentch are educated bookworms that argue about the failed philosophies of capitalism and promote world wide class struggle.

    >Trotsky as Slaanesh
Could work. Bolsheviks in the USSR instituted several new ideas like internationalism, women's equality, gay rights, free love etc., while Trotsky held much power. Some of these were revoked later by Stalin as "trotskist" ideas.
Thus, Trotsky is the chaos god who advocates "heretical" ideas of sexual freedom, anticolonialism, internationalism and racial equality.
Stalin (Khorne) supports violent class struggle and red terror.
Marx (Tzeentch) supports revolution, and by proxy any rebel sentiment against the existing order.
Lenin (Nurgle) supports the "death" of capitalism and private property, ideas of shared property, planned economy, social guarantees, elimination of money etc., and by proxy all ideas of "taking it from the rich and giving to the poor".

    I like this idea.
Just as Orks in 40K want to wage war, the Space Orks of "50K" want to be stereotypical "Savage" villains. They kidnap women, threaten them in an overly dramatic way and threaten to burn them at the stake, etc.
What the heroic Space Marines haven't realised is that the Space Orks WANT them to win and ALLOW themselves to be constantly bested, because that's what a good Space-Savage does.

    Not all of them.

As was said in this thread earlier, USSR was the first country to legalize gays. Communists viewed homosexuality and sex in general as oppressed by religion, thus they proposed gay rights and free love.

Later, homosexuality was banned by Stalin, and stayed that way until 1991. So, Stalinists hate gays, but e.g. Trotskyists don't.

Homosexuality was illegal in the USA (and the West in general) during the time period we're discussing (until 1962), so it was kinda logical (using McCarthyist warped logic) to link one outlawed thing to another.

    Also,
